Streszczenie:
Garden potato varieties grown on more than 1.5 ha are subject to variety registration to be sold as seed potato in Canada. Prerequisites for the registration of varieties include the pedigree and breeding history as well as a morphological description. For most varieties, no pedigree or morphological description is available, and furthermore, some groups are essentially derived from one another. Therefore, a review to determine the genetic and morphological similarities and uniqueness of some of the garden potato varieties was initiated. Seven garden potato varieties grown over the largest areas in Canada were genotyped using a set of nine microsatellite [simple sequence repeat (SSR)] markers, resulting in six distinct SSR profiles. These varieties were also grown out for morphological description, providing supplementary information for the national registration and their monitoring during the seed certification process. To further assess the genetic similarities of garden or heritage varieties, 84 potato varieties were genotyped, and the unique SSR profiles of 62 varieties and six SSR profiles shared among the other 22 varieties were added to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency potato variety reference SSR profile collection. Furthermore, a set of blue varieties were described morphologically to evaluate the nature of morphological characteristic variation of varieties sharing the same SSR profile. Although all 14 varieties grown show some morphological differences, all varieties within each group sharing an SSR profile also clustered together based on morphological characteristics.

<p>This study aims at examining Thainess as a writing strategy used in non-literary texts written by non-professional bilingual writers. These writers are advanced language learners who are pursuing their Master’s degree in English. Seven English narratives of their language learning experiences were analyzed based on Kachruvian’s framework of bilingual’s creativity and contact literatures. The findings showed that four out of six contextualization processes - transfer, translation, code-mixing, and reduplication - were utilized when conveying the writers’ experiences in acquiring their first and second languages. Unlike the findings in previous studies of Thainess in literary genre, lexical borrowing and shift process were not found in narratives. Although Thai English as a new variety in World Englishes has been debated for years and remains in an obscure status, it cannot be denied that the research findings in this study show the uniqueness of Thai English writing strategies.</p>

Streszczenie:
In this dissertation, we study the partial and generic uniqueness of block term tensor decompositions in signal processing. We present several conditions for generic uniqueness of tensor decompositions of multilinear rank (1, L1, L1), ..., (1, LR, LR) terms. Our proof is based on algebraic geometric methods. Mathematical preliminaries for this dissertation are multilinear algebra, and classical algebraic geometry. In geometric language, we prove that the joins of relevant subspace varieties are not tangentially weakly defective. We also give conditions for partial uniqueness of block term tensor decompositions by proving that the joins of relevant subspace varieties are not defective. The main result is the following. For a tensor Y belong to the tensor product of three complex vector spaces of dimensions I, J, K, we assume that L1, L2, ..., LR is from small to large, K is bigger or equal to J, and J is strictly bigger than LR. If the dimension of ambient space is strictly less than IJK, then for general tensors among those admitting block term tensor decomposition, the block term tensor decomposition is partially unique under the condition that the binomial coefficient indexed by J and LR is bigger or equal to R, and I is bigger or equal to 2; it has infinitely many expressions under the condition IJK is strictly less than the sum from L_1^2 to L_R^2; it is essentially unique under any of the following there conditions: (i) I is bigger or equal to 2, J, K is bigger or equal to the sum from L1 to LR (ii) R is 2, I is bigger or equal to 2 (iii) I is bigger or equal to R, K is bigger or equal to the sum from L1 to LR, J is bigger or equal to 2LR, the binomial coefficient indexed by J and LR is bigger or equal to R.

Kumar, Poornendu. "Interaction of distinguished varieties and the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in some domains". Thesis, 2023. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/6148.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis explores the interplay between complex geometry and operator theory, focusing on characterizing certain objects from algebraic geometry. Two concepts that have been of prime importance in recent times in the analysis of Hilbert space operators are distinguished varieties, which are a priori geometric in nature, and joint spectra, which are a priori algebraic in nature. This thesis brings them together to characterize all distinguished varieties with respect to the bidisc, more generally the polydisc and the symmetrized bidisc in terms of the joint spectrum of certain linear pencils. Some of the results are shown to refine earlier work in these directions. The binding force is provided by an operator-theoretic result, the Berger-Coburn-Lebow characterization of a tuple of commuting isometries. The thesis then turns to studying the uniqueness of solutions of the solvable NevanlinnaPick interpolation problems on the symmetrized bidisc and its connection with distinguished varieties. Several sucient conditions have been identified for a given data to have a unique solution. Moreover, for a class of solvable data on the symmetrized bidisc, there exists a distinguished variety where all solutions agree. Additionally, the thesis explores the more general concept of the determining sets.

The crop genetic diversity has been sustainably maintained by the farmers of different regions for generations through cross-breeding. Competition among commercial ventures has placed these traditional varieties under severe exploitation and pilferage. The Indian government, to preserve these traditional varieties, has established PPV and FRA (Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Act), which are on par with Intellectual Patent Rights (IPR). This gives the rights and ownership of the crop breed and its characterization to the traditional farmers who developed it. The researchers along with VAANGHAI, an NGO, have represented the traditional farmers, who are growing and maintaining traditional crops in Cauvery River's coastal delta region in Tamil Nadu to characterize and register their varieties under PPV and FRA. This study has identified around 69 rice varieties and characterized them based on their uniqueness, distinctiveness, stability, uniformity, test trials, and adaptability potential. Most potential rice varieties were registered under this act.

India is the land of agriculture with many varieties of plant species. These species have different uses in the medical, food, and harvesting industries. Despite having such a large collection of plants and agricultural assets, most of the Indian population is not aware of the goodness and properties of these precious plants except the usual ones. In this chapter, discussion and possibilities in this area are given and explored for the awareness of Indian people regarding the Indian plants. In this area, artificial intelligence and machine learning will likely develop an automated detecting machine that can classify and describe the plants by their images of leaves, bark, flowers, and stems. Looking forward in this direction, this chapter discusses an AI and ML based technique to recognize vegetation by the image of its leaves. In this approach, SIFT and ORB-based technique removes leaf image features and then tests the data set to match with a trained data set. The system is trained with 32 plant leaves. Henceforth, this system can recognize these plants by the image of their leaves. The uniqueness of this system is its data set. In the data set, the image of the leaf is prepared so that both sides of a leaf can be used to recognize the plant. This increase distinguishes the image irrespective of its color and shape. The system is still in an evolving phase that has the target of including all rare and useful plant information in this dataset. This system is very useful to preserve the information of all users, rare plants and those plants that are about to be extinct.

Streszczenie:
Shifts in language presence are often predicated on the political and economic power of its users, where power level correlates with the longevity of the language. Further, during language contact, any resistance between the communities may lead to political and social conflict. The dominant language usually prevails, subjugating the weaker speech communities to the point where they adapt in various ways, processes which effect hegemonies. Language contact also motivates bilingualism, which takes effect over years. This paper suggests that, observing colonization through certain Asian countries, and centrally India, phonological influences have become conspicuous. Postcolonial contexts have selected language identities to assert local linguistic and sociocultural identities through specifying phonetic uniqueness. The study notes that economic trends alter this process, as do political factors. The study investigates how the role of English as an official language and lingua franca in India predicates the selection of certain phonetic patterns so as to legitimize identities of language communities. As such, Indian Englishes have developed their own unique varieties of language, through this process.

Streszczenie:
We present the use of Machine Learning algorithm of K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and Deep Learning algorithm of Artificial Neural Network for converting scanned images of seismic reflection data into digital seismic format. Digital seismic data format provides more flexibility for users to implement seismic processing algorithms like de-noising, enhancement and converting it into standard format, namely SEGY for further analysis such as seismic interpretation and seismic attributes generation. Varieties of seismic image in color density representation with different color maps and conventional wiggle display have been tested. Digitizing color density image consists of three main steps: recognizing Red-Green-Blue (RGB) representation in each pixel, creating a look-up table of RGB amplitude and substitute the RGB with a color that falls within the color-scale's dynamic range. Meanwhile, the approach is slightly different for image with wiggles representation. Several images’ attributes such as gradients and edge gradients are generated for better input uniqueness against known target amplitudes during model establishment. This pre-trained model is then used for predicting seismic amplitudes at specific pixel location in respect to a set of image attributes. The outcome of the conversion shows promising results. A qualitative interpretation for similarity check between input and output in terms of seismic events, horizon, faults, stratigraphy and other geological/geophysical features are used to validate the quality of digitized images.

Bar-Joseph, Moshe, William O. Dawson i Munir Mawassi. Role of Defective RNAs in Citrus Tristeza Virus Diseases. United States Department of Agriculture, wrzesień 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7575279.bard.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This program focused on citrus tristeza virus (CTV), the largest and one of the most complex RNA-plant-viruses. The economic importance of this virus to the US and Israeli citrus industries, its uniqueness among RNA viruses and the possibility to tame the virus and eventually turn it into a useful tool for the protection and genetic improvement of citrus trees justify these continued efforts. Although the overall goal of this project was to study the role(s) of CTV associated defective (d)-RNAs in CTV-induced diseases, considerable research efforts had to be devoted to the engineering of the helper virus which provides the machinery to allow dRNA replication. Considerable progress was made through three main lines of complementary studies. For the first time, the generation of an engineered CTV genetic system that is capable of infecting citrus plants with in vitro modified virus was achieved. Considering that this RNA virus consists of a 20 kb genome, much larger than any other previously developed similar genetic system, completing this goal was an extremely difficult task that was accomplished by the effective collaboration and complementarity of both partners. Other full-length genomic CTV isolates were sequenced and populations examined, resulting in a new level of understanding of population complexities and dynamics in the US and Israel. In addition, this project has now considerably advanced our understanding and ability to manipulate dRNAs, a new class of genetic elements of closteroviruses, which were first found in the Israeli VT isolate and later shown to be omnipresent in CTV populations. We have characterized additional natural dRNAs and have shown that production of subgenomic mRNAs can be involved in the generation of dRNAs. We have molecularly cloned natural dRNAs and directly inoculated citrus plants with 35S-cDNA constructs and have shown that specific dRNAs are correlated with specific disease symptoms. Systems to examine dRNA replication in protoplasts were developed and the requirements for dRNA replication were defined. Several artificial dRNAs that replicate efficiently with a helper virus were created from infectious full-genomic cDNAs. Elements that allow the specific replication of dRNAs by heterologous helper viruses also were defined. The T36-derived dRNAs were replicated efficiently by a range of different wild CTV isolates and hybrid dRNAs with heterologous termini are efficiently replicated with T36 as helper. In addition we found: 1) All CTV genes except of the p6 gene product from the conserved signature block of the Closteroviridae are obligate for assembly, infectivity, and serial protoplast passage; 2) The p20 protein is a major component of the amorphous inclusion bodies of infected cells; and 3) Novel 5'-Co-terminal RNAs in CTV infected cells were characterized. These results have considerably advanced our basic understanding of the molecular biology of CTV and CTV-dRNAs and form the platform for the future manipulation of this complicated virus. As a result of these developments, the way is now open to turn constructs of this viral plant pathogen into new tools for protecting citrus against severe CTV terms and development of virus-based expression vectors for other citrus improvement needs. In conclusion, this research program has accomplished two main interconnected missions, the collection of basic information on the molecular and biological characteristics of the virus and its associated dRNAs toward development of management strategies against severe diseases caused by the virus and building of novel research tools to improve citrus varieties. Reaching these goals will allow us to advance this project to a new phase of turning the virus from a pathogen to an ally.
