Himarios, Jane Smith. "Determinants of labor union members' satisfaction with their unions". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53531.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This study investigates the determinants of union members' satisfaction with their unions. Two theories of member satisfaction are formulated. In the first, satisfaction is hypothesized to be a function of specific union performances. The second theory relates satisfaction to the relationship between unions and their members. Constitutional procedures, in addition to performance, are the predicted determinants of satisfaction. A set of variables measuring union performance in various areas thought to be important to union members is constructed to test the first theory. In the second theory, labor union constitutions are viewed as explicit contracts between unions and their members, and various constitutional provisions are quantified and used as a set of satisfaction determinants. Performance variables are found to be the primary determinants of satisfaction, explaining the majority of the measured variation in satisfaction. The constitutional variables cannot be ignored, however, because when they are combined with performance variables they do contribute significantly, in a statistical sense, to the explanatory power of the union satisfaction model. It appears that constitutional "contracts" which specify officer removal and officer election procedures do help to solve union members' agency problems and thus increase their satisfaction with their unions.

Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates what factors affect union organization and, to some degree, union activity in the face of declining union density in the majority of Western countries. Union structures have been changing in recent decades, not only in terms of declining membership but also because women and white-collar workers are becoming a more stable part of the membership base, whereas previously highly organized groups, such as blue-collar workers, are in decline. The point of departure for this thesis is that union density changes must be understood on several different levels. Thus, we must investigate changing union density in light of changing institutional settings, changing labour market structures and changing norms and values on the individual level. The thesis consists of three empirical studies investigating union density changes and union activity in Sweden, and an introductory chapter that develops the theoretical and empirical (historical) background. The empirical studies investigate: (1) whether and how the influence of various aspects of class and ideology on union organization have changed over time, (2) the effect of structural change on union density increase and decline, and(3) what factors influence different attitudes towards industrial action among Swedish employees. Results show that union density decline in Sweden since the mid-1990s cannot be explained by any forceful shifts in the labour market structure or individuals’ opinions and/or attitudes related to trade unions to any significant degree. Union density decline in Sweden is of a general nature. However, an increasing divergence in union density across various categories of employees, including, e.g., private-sector vs. public-sector employees, young vs. older employees, employees of foreign origin vs. employees of Swedish origin, and the atypically employed vs. employees with standardized employment, is observed. Moreover, previously strong predictors of union membership, including class identity, ideology, sector of employment and type of employment contract, are in decline, but they still influence union organization and attitudes towards industrial action.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Scotland’s Future, The Scottish Government’s guide to independence proposed cooperation with the Nordic Council amongst multiple external relations objectives, a continuation of references by independence supporting elites to the region that stretch decades. Closer cooperation with Norden as pronounced in the paper implies that the Nordic Council serves at least two functions, firstly, a basis for fostering a rejuvenated Council of the British Isles based on the Nordic Council framework (Qvotrup, 2009; Bogdanor, 2009), and secondly, formal political and societal union with the Nordic region (Bailes, Þórhallsson and Johnstone 2013). Both functions permeate from the rejection of Scotland’s current union with rUK, and SNP rhetoric of ‘independence within Europe’ suggesting that senior politicians have no qualms in leaving one union for another. Scholarly references tend to narrow on discourse linking independence to the creation of a Nordic welfare model with little attention to formal regional unification through the Nordic Council. This thesis therefore studies the independence movement’s use of Norden and explores both the context and purpose of Scottish-Nordic articulations. It finds that most political groups sympathetic to independence desire cooperation with Norden but not to the detriment of future relations with rUK in the event of independence. The use of Norden is not solely a desire to replicate Nordic models of welfare as many scholars argue, but rather, Norden invokes a political and societal partner that emphasises the movement’s progressive ambitions. The pursuit of Norden as a union ultimately stems from the collapse of the UK’s welfare union and the damaging effects of a unitary and confined constitutional system, meaning that the political elite favour a societal and political approach to union like that of Norden and for some elites, an actual political and societal union with the region.

Tai, Hsiao-Hui. "The transition of trade unions in Taiwan : from paternalistic autonomy to responsibility for collective union and non-union representation". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2017. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3545/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Paternalistic employment relations have been a tradition supported by the government in Taiwan whilst trade unions were brought in to support political development and economic growth. The government promulgated a ‘harmony culture’ in order to control employment relations, and in the 1980s set up the campaign of the ‘factory as one family, factory as one school’ to encourage employers to inculcate paternalistic beliefs in their employees’ everyday working lives. Authority, benevolence and morality, the characteristics of paternalistic management, make workers docile and loyal to management and stunt the sense of collective identity. This qualitative research selects one primary case, a privatised enterprise SteelCo and its union Steel-U, to conduct participant observation, in-depth interviews with union officers, labour representatives and management, surveys of union members, and documentary analysis of official documents and meeting minutes. One supplementary case is a state-owned enterprise SugarCo with its union Sugar-U; this mainly involved in-depth interviews with union representatives and limited access to some documents. Corporate trade unions take advantage of the paternalistic tradition to gradually develop their organisations as recognised by employers. Implementing nonunion representation is a practice of paternalistic ideology, offering trade unions another platform on which to work with management. Workers identify both themselves and the trade union as parts of the enterprise family rather than seeing the union as an agent of collectivity. The union has to be a service provider offering welfare and benefits to attract members before triggering any mobilisation. To conclude, paternalism has helped corporate trade unions to establish themselves in state-owned and privatised workplaces, and empowered trade unions to engage legitimately, effectively and autonomously in workplace affairs. To revitalise themselves from the paternalistic ideology, trade unions are expected to take the route of partnering unionism with the manipulation of nonunion representation in a top-down process of shaping labour’s collective identity.

Mustchin, Stephen. "Union involvement in learning and union 'revitalisation' strategies". Thesis, University of Manchester, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.506851.

Streszczenie:
This thesis assesses the contribution of union involvement in learning to union 'revitalisation' in the UK. The overall research question addressed in this thesis is 'Have bargaining and organising approaches linked to learning provision contributed to strengthened union presence or 'revitalisation' in the sectors and demographic groups where it is underrepresented and declining (i.e outside the public sector?)' Since 1997, unions in the UK have expanded their level of involvement in issues related to learning, in large part due to increased government funding via the Union Learning Fund and with the statutory recognition of Union Learning Representatives. These developments have taken place at a time when unions have been adopting, to various extents, strategies to counter decline in membership levels and bargaining coverage. Two of the main strategies of this type include an increased emphasis on organising new members and workplaces, and the fostering of cooperative or 'partnership' style collective agreements. These are analysed in detail in this thesis, particularly in terms of how increased union involvement in learning supports and influences such strategies. The empirical dimension of the thesis is largely based on in-depth, qualitative interviews, including five chapters based around case studies of union learning activity that relates to broader union 'revitalisation' strategies. Key findings include that union involvement in learning has contributed somewhat towards increasing levels of membership and building union presence among underrepresented groups of workers, but that the process of integrating learning into collective agreements has been problematic due to ambivalent and often hostile employers, within a context of weak state regulation and statutory support.

This thesis is to study the evolution of the EU - Africa relations, and how they have been shaped in the 21st Century. Bearing a historical perspective of the relations, the cornerstone of the study will cover the period between 2000 and 2010. It is at the turn of the century that the EU-Africa relations gained momentum with the adoption of the Cotonou Partnership Agreement and the first EU- Africa Summit in Cairo, 2000 that laid the foundation of the Joint Africa EU Strategy. This strategy epitomizes the desire of the EU and Africa to forge a close bond of relations towards achieving their shared interests based on a &lsquo
partnership of equals&rsquo
. EU-Africa relations have been characterized on the basis of clientelism inherent from its colonial legacy in Africa. Thus the main question is whether the strategy adopted guarantees a relationship based on a &lsquo
partnership of equals&rsquo
or is it pure rhetoric? The thesis concludes that, Africa&rsquo
s importance on the international arena has been increasing in the last decade with a proportionate increase in competition for its resources especially from emerging powers. This has threatened the EU&rsquo
s position in Africa and with the EU&rsquo
s quest to enhance its global actorness, there has been a need for the EU to restructure its relations with Africa. Though the strategy is based on a mutual partnership, it is skewed to the EU&rsquo
s favour due to its superior power both economically and politically.

This thesis examines the bilateral relations of European Union and Russia in terms of energy trade. The main question of this thesis is whether European Union could realize its energy strategies of supply security and supply diversification in its natural gas trade with Russia. The main argument of this thesis is
Russia has been undermining the EU&rsquo
s energy strategy, by using the contradictions between the EU&rsquo
s energy strategy priorities of supply security and supply diversification. Emphasizing the significance of supply security for the European Union, Russia undermines the EU-sponsored projects of supply diversification. The fact that, Russia will be the principal supplier of natural gas to Europe, is likely remain as the key actor in energy market of EU. However, Russia is also dependent on EU for its hydrocarbon exports. Consequently Russia&rsquo
s role as EU&rsquo
s primary supplier in natural gas , and EU&rsquo
s role as Russia&rsquo
s main hydrocarbon importer, are likely to be the main factor that will continue to shape the thereon energy security in the foreseeable future.

As of 2015, public opinion of the ethical and honesty standards of labor union leaders was low, with 36% of the public reporting a low or very low rating, and only 18% reporting high or very high ratings. Grounded in leadership behavioral theory, the purpose of this correlation study was to examine the relationship between union members' perceptions of union leadership consideration, union members' perceptions of leadership initiation of structure, and union members' perceptions of leadership trust. Forty-four union members completed a brief demographic survey, the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire XII, and the Trust and Employee Satisfaction Survey. The results of simultaneous linear regression indicated that model as a whole was able to significantly predict union members' perceptions of leadership trust, F(2,41) = 10.40, p < .001, R2 = .30. Leadership consideration was the only significantly predictor of union members' perceptions of leadership trust (β = .62, t = 3.23, p = .002). The results may have significance for social change; union leaders can implement leadership consideration to improve the trust levels of members towards union leaders. Further social change implications include the potential to increase union membership. Moreover, society benefits when strong labor unions can provide a pathway to checks and balances that subsequently may improve employees working conditions, worker's pay, local economy, and produce higher quality goods and services.

Streszczenie:
The under-representation of women and over-representation of men in trade unions raises questions as to why it occurs, its consequences for women and how it can be overcome. This thesis engages with these questions. It indicates the dominant ideologies and institutions which underpin the dominant male model of trade unions and discusses strategies designed to change the 'rules of the game'. The creation of UNISON on 1st July 1993 provides a research site in which to study the extent to which trade union democracy can be deliberately re-shaped so as to reflect the interests of women. UNISON represents 1.3 million workers within the public service sector, two-thirds of whom are women. It has been the express intention of UNISON to achieve gender democracy through empowering its women members to participate in its representative structures. In particular, the adoption of three key principles in the rule book: proportionality for women, fair representation at all levels and self-organisation for four disadvantaged groups, is intended to have a significant impact on the nature of women's involvement in the union. This thesis contains extensive case study material collected within UNISON over a two year period, ending November 1995. It reveals the opportunities which the three rule book commitments provide for effective representation by women in UNISON. By excluding men so that women can take the majority of representative positions, proportionality and fair representation change the predominant values and beliefs of trade union democracy. By providing opportunities for women to determine their own agenda, in the absence of men, self-organisation challenges the ideology that union strength is based on unity and common interests. However, the dominant model of trade unionism is not being re-shaped without tension or resistance. This thesis argues that ideologies and institutions remain which prevent women's access to representative structures being translated into the discussion of women's concerns in UNISON's decision making arena. Streszczenie:

During the decades between 1950 and 1970, unionization in the United States was at its peak. Private and public employees gained advances in the improvement of working conditions and other terms and conditions of employment through cohesive action and collective bargaining. Today, unions represent only 11.1% of America’s workforce with the numbers constantly declining with one exception – the public sector. Employers, both public and private, lament the involvement of an outsider, asserting that the collective bargaining relationship impedes management’s ability to manage workforces and to accomplish agency performance objectives effectively. Law enforcement management, plagued by problems of increasing crime and decreasing fiscal and staffing resources, confront the same challenges. However, evidence is lacking regarding whether there are variances in performance between union and non-union departments from a public safety perspective. This research measures police department performance in 76 municipal non-union and union departments using crime rates, arrest rates, clearance rates, and community relationships. Statistical analysis was conducted using multiple regression and MANCOVA. There was a significant, positive relationship between collective bargaining status and department size. As department size increased, the departments were more likely to have collective bargaining. There was no significant relationship between collective bargaining status and crime rates, arrest rates, clearance rates, and total community score in a univariate analysis. However, when considering the inter-correlation of these factors, there was a statistically significant relationship. Therefore, collective bargaining status was not significantly related to police department performance. The null hypothesis for Research Question One was not rejected. The findings of this research indicate no measurable difference in individual performance indicators between unionized and non-unionized police departments. However, significance was indicated when examining the performance indicators together as a whole using MANCOVA. Therefore, the null hypothesis for Research Question Two was rejected.

Streszczenie:
This thesis evaluates the Union Learning Agenda (ULA) in Wales using Behrens, Hamann and Hurd’s (2004) model of trade union revitalisation. The political, economic, membership and institutional spheres of union learning activity were explored through a mixed-method study that utilised a quantitative survey of 246 ULRs in Wales, alongside interview, observation and documentary research methods. The examination showed that within a political social partnership environment unions extracted resources from government and gained policy influence. The evaluation of workplace activity showed that ULRs were organising broadly defined learning for colleagues, and developing bargaining and consultation with employers over vocational and educational training (VET). Procedural mechanisms were more common where there was employer support for ULR activity and substantive outcomes were greater where procedural mechanisms were in place. Further, ULRs were engaging members through broad rather than narrow definitions of learning, and supporting the development of union-commitment behaviours (Snape and Redman 2004). The ULA was increasing the infrastructural resources, internal solidarity and network embeddedness of trade union institutional capacity (Lévesque and Murray 2010), thereby contributing to trade union revitalisation processes. The thesis contributes to empirical knowledge on the ULA by providing the first analysis of activity in Wales. Secondly, it assessed the content and importance of multi-union and multi-actor activity in ULA networks. The thesis argues that in a context where government and employer support for union involvement is strong, a partnership approach to the ULA can aid union revitalisation not only at the workplace but beyond it.

It also presents Sparks of Union, a 20-minute composition for ten Western instruments and interactive electronics. This composition aims to focus on different musical languages in search of polarizing and uniting elements, and explores free interactions between the different musical elements. Streszczenie:
Scaphoid fracture union depends upon early diagnosis and adequate management and is considered to be adversely influenced by proximal scaphoid avascularity and carpal instability. There is, however, controversy on various aspects in the diagnosis and management of this injury. Studies investigating some of these aspects are reported in this thesis. With regard to the initial diagnosis of this fracture this thesis demonstrated that the fracture was usually visible on the 'Ziter' or the posterio-anterior radiographic view while radiographic evaluation of soft tissue swelling was of less value than that suggested by current literature. Moreover, the second week radiograph did not provide reliable evidence of a fracture in those suspected on clinical examination alone. Normal lines in an intact scaphoid could be mis-interpreted as a fracture. With regard to management, the fracture healed equally well in a Colles' cast: thumb immobilisation did not appear to be neccessary. The incidence of non-union was around 12% and most were symptomatic. A further 25%, in whom the fracture site was easily identified but appeared to have healed, formed a distinct clinical group and many had symptoms. The reliability and reproducibility of radiographic signs of union were poor. Therefore, a real time ultrasonographic method of demonstrating movement at the scaphoid fracture site was developed. Proximal avascularity was more common than that suggested by radiographic appearances alone while carpal instability was uncommon within two years of injury. Based on these observations a rational approach to management of scaphoid fractures was proposed.

The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between union commitment and union participation. The research was conducted in the electrical engineering industry in the Western Cape. The respondents (N = 131) were all employees of electrical engineering companies in the Western Cape. From a sample of 65.5 per cent, 41.9 per cent of the respondents were female and 58, 01 per cent was male. Results indicated that union commitment is the main predictor of union participation and perceived union instrumentality is a significant predictor of union commitment. Affective organizational commitment and affective union commitment correlated moderately with each other. Results also indicated that there are no significant differences between union participation levels of male and female union members.

In the literature on the emergence of the welfare state, the strength of trade unions and the organized working class is often touted as the primary driving force behind the welfare state project. Furthermore, much of the previous literature has tended to assume union homogeneity across countries, federations, industries and professions. What is conspicuously lacking from the current political science literature is a systematic analysis of real-world trade unions’ choice of labor market advocacy focus. Using a qualitative approach and studying both published union material as well as conducting a number of elite interviews with high-level union officials, this thesis studies the degree to which Swedish trade unions’ labor market policy preferences are defined by the union members’ labor market risk exposure and whether the union adheres to white-collar or blue-collar unionism. While the conclusions indeed suggest that labor market risk and blue-collar/white-collar unionism do have a systematic impact on cartain aspects of trade unions’ labor market advocacy, future “large N” studies utilizing alternative methodological approaches will be required to draw more easily generalizable conclusions.

Lee, Fa-Hsien. "Trade unions and privatisation in Taiwan : a case study of the railway union". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2008. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55757/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis explores Taiwanese privatisation in the context of global neo-liberalisation. It is a study of the relationship between the state, capital and trade unions in relation to privatisation and the policy-making process in Taiwan and the Taiwan Railway in particular. It pays attention to exploring the three dimensions: first, how the state plays its role in the privatisation process second, what private capital does in order to extend its financial interests and third, whether trade unions have capacity to shape privatisation policies. The thesis draws upon extensive fieldwork that took place in Taiwan and the Taiwanese railway industry in particular between May 2005 and November 2007. It documents how Taiwanese public sector unions, dependent on the party-state system, sought to transform themselves into independent unions during the period of privatisation. Using qualitative and participant observation methods, including semi- structured interviews, fieldnote taking, and documentary analysis, this thesis provides, for the first time first-hand, rich, deep, holistic and contextual data on issues that had previously been hidden from public debate. These are discussed and analysed with particular reference to British and former Soviet Union's experience in the context of privatisation. Although the research was explicitly located in the context of Taiwan and the Taiwan Railway, it is hoped that it has more general significance. Taiwan's experience, until now neglected in debates on privatisation, could extend contemporary debates on the topic especially in relation to the various roles of the state, capital and trade unions. In particular, it raises for discussion the finding that under certain circumstances, instead of being marginalised by privatisation, certain trade unions could gain strong bargaining capacity, weakening the role of the state and private capital, and significantly shaping the policy process.

Streszczenie:
Recent years have seen British trade unions regain some of the membership and influence lost during the 1980s and 1990s. During the same period, sexual orientation activism and other 'new' social movements have become increasingly prominent on the world stage. This thesis is an empirical examination of British unions' responses to the issues, concerns and priorities of lesbian and gay workers seeking to further their agendas through collective action. In response to the paucity of academic research in this area, this thesis presents an analysis of six unions' attempts to organise and represent diverse lesbian and gay interests within class-focused bureaucratic structures. Establishing a context for this study, the thesis considers historical and contemporary accounts of union organisation, the fusion of class with status-based identities and examples of gender, 'race' and disability action within British trade unions. Through interviews with key actors, the research uncovers the existence of separate 'safe spaces' for lesbian and gay organisation, structures connecting action to 'mainstream' activities, and top-down initiatives designed to promote acceptance of organisational diversity. This thesis examines anticipated 'pockets of resistance' within the unions to sexuality action, but finds the bureaucratic and hierarchic nature of union organisation a larger barrier to the effectiveness of action than any internal opposition. The need to recognise intra-group diversity and the dangers of centralised 'servicing' to the unions' future plans are discussed, in light of contemporary trends towards workplace organisation, partnership and the requirement to address members' heterogeneous needs, as are the questions such an analysis raises for conceptualisations of democratic practice. Through the examination of the unions' organisation of sexual minorities, this thesis refines and extends Kelly's (1998) mobilisation theory and presents an alternative framework of trade union action as 'mobilisation within mobilisation'. It closes by considering the implications for both social movements and continued union 'renewal' of organised labour's attempts to negotiate 'the bigger picture'.

This thesis examines how trade unions are meeting the two-fold challenge of a fall in youth unionisation and a changed media usage amongst youth. The researcher attempts to answer this question by examining how three different trade unions (Sveriges Ingenjörer, SI, Kommunal and Hotell och Restaurang facket, HRF) are communicating with a younger generation for the purpose of recruiting them. The thesis is based on a theoretical framework derived from communications theories and practices specifically aimed at youth, as well as theories about union recruitment strategies, civic engagement and the logic of collective action (since unions represent collective interests). The researcher has applied a qualitative approach where the thesis rests on in-depth interviews with different respondents. The findings of the thesis reveal that all the unions have started to face up to the challenge of falling youth unionisation (by applying the advice put forward in literature on youth and health communications, and union recruitment literature). However, the findings note that the unions have applied the advice to varying extent, with Sveriges Ingenjörer being furthest ahead. In addition, the findings illustrate that the unions seem to be responding to the challenge of a changing media usage amongst youth. Yet, the researcher believes that the unions might do well in exploring a more participatory style of communication, since youth today have started to expect a higher degree of participation in their communication online. The findings also highlight that both Kommunal and HRF seem to be facing tougher challenges than Sveriges Ingenjörer in communicating with youth for the purposes of recruiting them because of differences between the sectors the unions organise. Finally, the findings reveal that the unions communicate with youth in accordance with Olson’s theory of logic of collective action (Congleton, 2015), which highlights that individuals will only join a union if there is an individual gain to offset the union fee.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores Llandilofawr Poor Law union’s first half-century. A small union with 17,000 inhabitants scattered across 12 parishes in the remote Carmarthenshire countryside, its economy was predominantly agricultural. The board’s 27 elected guardians, who repeatedly sought re-election, were thus drawn almost exclusively from the farming community. Poor Law Commissioners sensed that implementing the New Poor Law in this environment would be difficult, and frequently referred to the ‘peculiarity’ of Wales and the Welsh. Against this background, this is a detailed study of the union’s elected guardians and officials, and shows how a vibrant local culture determined their approach to the task. Because their sense of belonging remained at parish level the union never became an entity with which local people identified. It did, however, function as an effective administrative unit despite intense inter-parish rivalry. A particular ‘peculiarity’ emerges in that local gentry and magistrates remained almost wholly outside the process, playing almost no role in union affairs. Their absence, and the Commissioners’ clumsy handling of an early key event allowed elected guardians to take control of the union by 1839, one dominant individual, a board member for 47 years, leading an élite group which ran union affairs ‘their’ way. Key to this was to exploit local ‘connections’ and pay particular attention to appointing the ‘right’ officials, especially the union clerk. The outcome was that pauper care was generally benign, and considerable intra-parish differences flourished. Over 95% of relief was provided outside the workhouse, and doles in Llandilofawr were relatively generous compared to other areas of both Wales and England. The historiography of the Welsh poor law is shown to be thin, and this study’s findings have general implications for interpreting the practical operation of poor law unions in both England and Wales, lending support to the idea of considerable regional variation in the application of the New Poor Law.

Streszczenie:
Previous studies of trade union structure have relied upon the differentiation of taxonomic types. Descriptively, this method fails to account for the evolutionary development of trade union form. Analytically, the categorisation of unions into ideal types and the accentuation of the pure form have acted to emphasise stasis to the exclusion of the dynamic elements inherent within trade union structural development. In order to overcome these shortcomings this thesis relies upon the identification and analysis of the inter-relationships between trade union structural events. There are four such structural events: mergers, formations, dissolutions and breakaways. The central analytical focus is upon the trade union merger process, its causal influences and its relationship with other structural events. The wave pattern of occurrence observed in aggregate merger activity forms the initial focus. Multivariate analysis is employed to generate a framework within which this pattern is examined. The results of the multivariate analysis suggest a changing relationship between the merger process and its environmental influences during different phases in the institutionalisation of industrial relations. Analyses of the changing shape of merger activity and differences in its form during the two principal merger waves lend further support to the notion that the merger process has undergone an evolutionary development. The inter-relationships between merger activity and other forms of structural events also suggest variation over time. The pattern in these variations is related to existing explanations of merger activity in order that their merits and limitations can be considered. The extraction of elements of these explanations allows for the generation of an alternative account of the developments in merger activity based upon the integration of the extracted elements.

within the context of the European Union (EU) in terms of constructivist approach. This thesis is based on the idea that European integration project needs a shared identity
it is essential means for the success and continuity of an &lsquo

. In this context, the aim of the thesis is to find out the answers to the questions of whether the EU has a European identity
whether a post-national European identity is viable and desirable
if so, which model of identity is more viable and desirable. Through adopting the constructivist approach the main argument of this thesis is that a European identity is as a process and project. The thesis further argues European identity as a &lsquo

The concept of sovereignty has three meanings : formal, material, and organic. Nevertheless, the identification of the attributes of sovereignty under the material meaning is never justified. The purpose of this thesis is to study the relationships between these different meanings of the concept of sovereignty, focusing on one of the attributes of sovereignty : the right to coin money. To better isolate it, this work focuses on currency unions using a historical and comparative method. At the end of this study, it appears that the three uses of the concept of sovereignty can only be linked to each other from a teleological point of view. This reveals the justificatory character of the concept of sovereignty, which is therefore not purely descriptive

APPLICATION OF TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN TEACHER UNIONS FROM THE PERSPECTIVES OF UNION MEMBERS Bagci, Abdullah M.S., Department of Educational Administration and Planning Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Hasan SimSek September 2009, 123 pages The purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the functioning of teacher unions and provide feedback to union managements, members of the unions, teachers, academics and education officials concerning TQM applications in teacher unions by investigating the implementation degree of TQM principles in teacher unions in Ankara. Several studies have been done on the implementation of TQM in the field of education mainly for state/private schools and state/private universities
nevertheless, no researches have been carried out regarding TQM applications in teacher unions which is an important stakeholder in Turkish education system with more than 400.000 members. A Total Quality Management Questionnaire was developed by the researcher based on the existing literature on basic TQM principles to be applied to union members in state schools in Ankara. Descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyze the data obtained. The results revealed no difference between Egitim-Sen and Tü
rk Egitim-Sen members&rsquo
perceptions concerning the application of 38 TQM proposals in their unions. However, Mann-Whitney U results yielded significant differences on the application of 16 TQM proposals included in the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics results also revealed that more than half of the union members were not aware whether the TQM proposals were applied in their unions or not and about 40% of the members participated in the study perceive that TQM principles are implemented in their unions. This paper reconsiders the trade effects of the euro, providing a decomposition into its effects on the extensive margin and intensive margin. Furthermore, it relates the more disaggregated estimates for 93 two-digit HS product groups to the elasticity of substitution, thereby testing a key hypothesis of recent trade theory. The estimates for the period 1996-2011 suggest a trade effect of the euro of some 28 percent, which has mainly materialized through the intensive margin. For several product groups, we find a negative net effect of the euro on the extensive margin, supporting anecdotal evidence that firms have consolidated their product varieties in response to the elimination of exchange rate variability. Finally, the disaggregated estimates are in line with recent trade theory, suggesting that a large elasticity of substitution dampens the effect of a trade cost reduction on the extensive margin and amplifies its effect on the intensive margin.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Trade unions are juristic entities and volitional associations that have, historically and ideologically, represented the aggregate strength of labour to maximise their effectiveness in their endeavour to fulfil their core responsibilities and principal functions. However, Ceronie (2007) postulates that, in South Africa, there has been a loss of ideological support for unions since the dawn of democracy. The establishment of the democracy had the effect that a huge driving gear to belong to a union was lost. The mandate of trade unions is to, inter alia, protect, maintain, and improve the working conditions of their members. They fulfil this mandate by ensuring that they offer services that meet, if not exceed, members' satisfaction levels. Trade unions ultimately exist to protect both the work- and non-work-related interest of their members, whether these be economic, social, political, or environmental (Venter, 2003). Nel et al. (2005) asseverate that trade unions are membership organisations: They exist because of their members, they are made up of members, they serve their members' interest, and they are governed by their members. That is, they derive their authority and mandate from the members. Therefore, trade union are service providers. They must give employees enough reason to become attracted to them as members and to remain members. Simply put, trade unions, as the embodiment of workers' aspirations, owe a duty of care to their members, and thus should at all times, act in their best interests. Thus, the kind and quality of services offered by trade unions should be perceived by members as sufficient and satisfactory. Highly satisfied and committed union members are more likely to support and participate in trade union activities. Trade unions, like any other organisation that provides services, are faced with challenges of membership decline due to perceived poor services or the lack thereof, and are therefore required to devise remedial measures to mitigate the membership decline. Against the backdrop of the foregoing, the aim of the study was to examine if there is a relationship between the quality of services and benefits offered by unions to their members and member satisfaction. The sample comprised members of the three major unions within the public service of South Africa. Using the quantitative paradigm, primary empirical data were collected by distributing 500 questionnaires, which yielded a 48.9% response rate. Data were analysed using the SPSS Statistics 23 software program. The questionnaire was valid and reliable, with an overall scale reliability coefficient of α = .975. The findings revealed moderate levels of member satisfaction (56%) with low dissatisfaction (16%), and a significantly high participation rate in union activities (61%), and union effectiveness (80%). That is, the findings revealed that members were generally satisfied with their unions' performance. The findings affirm union instrumentality, union effectiveness, and member participation as antecedents of union commitment, and also confirm unions' performance and effectiveness as significant determinants of members' satisfaction with a union. Therefore, in a quest to maintain and/or increase their relevance, trade unions must examine their current services and benefits, in order to determine whether they still meet their members' preferences, and, if not, to develop and provide a new service mix that will not only appeal to unionised members, but will also attract non-unionised workers.

The introduction of the European Directive on information and consultation and its implementation into United Kingdom (UK) law has increased the focus on workplace representation arrangements. However, existing research into non-union representation (NER) arrangements in the UK is limited. This research examines NER arrangements in nine UK firms and assesses their effectiveness in representing the needs of employees and employers. The research explores these issues by using a multi-variant analysis including employee surveys, interviews, focus groups, observation and internal company documentation. The research attempts to address a number of research questions. First, what are the management strategies towards and objectives of NER arrangements. Second, are NER arrangements a complement to union representation or do they act as a substitute for union-based voice arrangements. Third, how effective are NER and union arrangements perceived to be at representing the interests of and providing voice for employees. Fourth, what are the perceived workplace outcomes of both NER and union-based voice arrangements. Fifth, what are the union responses and approaches towards NER arrangements. Sixth, what are the potential implications for employers, unions and NER-based voice arrangements in the future. Overall, the evidence presented in this research questions the legitimacy of NER forms as alternatives to unions in effectively representing the interests of employees. The findings would also suggest that while trade unions may provide greater voice than NER arrangements, the strength of that voice is dependent on their responses to such arrangements and effectiveness in representing employees' interests at the workplace. And that in turn depends on the union being perceived by the workforce as both representative and able to act independently. From a management perspective, allowing influence over workplace issues and at times an acknowledgement of differing interests may also be essential conditions for more effective decision-making processes in organisations.

Streszczenie:

This study represented an initial effort to systematically examine the effects of the perception of servant-leadership attributes in union leaders on the commitment and participation levels of union members. Using Barbuto and Wheeler's (2006) Servant Leadership Questionnaire, and Gordon, Philpot, Burt, Thompson and Spiller's (1980) Commitment to the Union Scale, 535 members of a U.S.-based, national healthcare union rated their union leaders on servant-leadership attributes, and answered a series of questions designed to assess their level of union commitment. Additionally, demographic and participation information was collected. A combination of descriptive statistics, and Baron and Kenny's (1986) mediation methodology was used to determine the relationship between servant-leadership attributes, union commitment attributes, and an overall participation score. Demographic information was used to determine generalizability. The results of this study indicate that each attribute of servant-leadership showed a relationship with overall union member participation and with each attribute of union commitment. The only instance in which an attribute of union commitment consistently mediated the relationship between servant-leadership and overall union member participation was union loyalty. While the respondents in this study reported lower scores on those attributes of servant-leadership and union commitment that emphasize the personal over the collective, this does not negate the statistical significance of the impact on servant-leadership on union commitment. The results of this study confirms that, in the case of the sponsoring organization, servant-leadership is a viable leadership paradigm with the potential to increase both commitment to the union-as-organization, as well as increasing overall union member participation.

The issue of commitment has received extensive research through the years yet inconsistencies still prevail. This research investigated the relationships between organizational commitment, trade union commitment, job satisfaction and trade union participation. A survey based on the work of Meyer and Allen (1997) was used to collect data. The sample consisted of 90 participants who were members of the same trade union. The main findings indicate that trade union commitment is positively correlated to union participation and it explains 34 % of variance in participation. No significant difference based on gender was found in the sample which is inconsistent with available literature. Organizational and union commitment exhibit a significant positive relationship as do job satisfaction and union commitment as well as job satisfaction and union participation. Organizational commitment and union participation exhibited a non-significant result. Dual commitment was also apparent in the sample. Further research is advisable to ascertain fully on these relationships within the South African context.
