Streszczenie:
In this paper, a new method of “fuzzy identification” is proposed for circumstances in which an exact match of an epigraphic written word with later attested forms is not possible (for example, because the word has been lost from the language). Based on our increasingly sophisticated understanding of early Chinese morphological patterns and word families, it is sometimes possible to achieve an approximate understanding of pronunciation and meaning in the absence of a precise identification. As an illustration of this approach, I consider the oracle-bone graph as it appears in a famous eclipse inscription. This graph has been identified as 斲 zhuó and 剅 dōu (among others). I argue that any such identification is overly precise. A fuzzy identification, as a member of the word family based on root *tok with meaning ‘cut, chop’, is a more accurate reflection of the state of our knowledge and provides greater insight into the possible pronunciations and range of meaning and function of the word.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The past 30 years of reading research has confirmed the importance of bottom-up processing. Rather than a psycholinguistic guessing game (Goodman, 1967), reading is dependent on rapid, accurate recognition of written forms. In fluent first language (L1) readers, this is seen in the automatic activation of a word’s phonological form, impacting lexical processing (Perfetti & Bell, 1991; Rayner, Sereno, Lesch & Pollatsek, 1995). Although the influence of phonological form is well established, less clear is the extent to which readers are sensitive to the possible pronunciations of a word (Lesch & Pollatsek, 1998), derived from the varying consistency of grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) (e.g., although ‘great’ has only one pronunciation, [ɡɹeɪt], the grapheme <ea> within it has multiple possible pronunciations: [i] in [plit] ‘pleat’, [ɛ] in [bɹɛθ] ‘breath’; Parkin, 1982). Further, little is known about non-native readers’ sensitivity to such characteristics. Non-native readers process text differently from L1 readers (Koda & Zehler, 2008; McBride-Chang, Bialystok, Chong & Li, 2004), with implications for understanding L2 reading comprehension (Rayner, Chace, Slattery & Ashby, 2006). The goal of this study was thus to determine whether native and non-native readers are sensitive to the consistency of a word’s component GPCs during lexical processing and to compare this sensitivity among readers from different L1s.

Streszczenie:
Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage, resulting in difficulties with speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. This study focuses on addressing challenges faced by local therapists in aphasia treatment. Through an ethnographic study involving observations and interviews, critical issues in current technological solutions for aphasia treatment were identified. These issues include the lack of feedback during patient training, limited localized content, repetitive materials, and a lack of options for conversational speech training. In our study, we tried to address one of these issues concerning automatic evaluation of patient speech pronunciation. By utilizing public datasets and local patient data, we developed a system that provides accurate pronunciation scores and personalized feedback, assisting therapists in guiding patient progress. The system supports customized pronunciations, including local accents and dialects. The system is designed for multiple platforms, ensuring accessibility, and can be extended to involve speech therapists to enhance its capabilities. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating research insights with clinical practice, empowering therapists, and enhancing the quality of aphasia treatment.

Streszczenie:
The practice of accurate pronunciation of the Qur'anic harf, lengths, idgams, etc., is certainly a matter of skill in tilavet, and there is no skill without systematic work and practice. The practical, sound-related aspect of reciting the Qur'an is only one segment of Tajweed, i.e. its artistic dimension. However, when we say 'ilm et-tajweed', we refer to the Qur'anic science, which, like any other science, has its own theory, its subject of study, its terminology and methodology. Therefore, it is erroneous to perceive the science of Tajweed only as melodic reciting of the Qur'anic text, or to limit it to practicing the pronunciation of the Qur'anic words and examining the application of the Tajweed rules. Even more debatable is the issue of treating the term Tajweed when related to the term Qira’at. Given the difficulty in understanding the subject matter of the study of Tajweed and Qira’at and the lack of understanding of the basic terminological concepts of these two Qur'anic disciplines, this paper aims at shedding some light on these issues.

This study aims to explore the influence of Arabic grammar on the study of the Qur'anic text and will highlight how the discipline of Arabic grammar developed to ensure correct reading and understanding of the Qur'an, and the preservation of the muṣḥaf. The study deals with two issues: first it discusses form, determining the accurate pronunciation of words and construction of sentences, and taṣḥīḥ (‘validation’) of the qirāʾāt. Second, it addresses the role of grammatical meaning in understanding the Qur'an, and the subtlety of its structures, which have left the Text open to a multiplicity of understandings in the production of fiqh.

Streszczenie:
This study examines the segmentation and pronunciation accuracy of the alveodental phoneme thāʾ [tˤ] in Arabic based on students' reading tests. By employing a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis design, the research seeks to obtain detailed descriptive data in the form of words and images. The Praat application is used to measure sound frequency from various sound sources, ensuring precise and comprehensive analysis. The results indicate that students face significant challenges in correctly pronouncing the phoneme [tˤ], with frequent articulation errors. These pronunciation difficulties are attributed to several factors, including the phonetic differences between the students' native languages and Arabic, the inherent complexity of Arabic phonemes, and the influence of various dialects or accents the students may possess. This study highlights the critical need for a thorough understanding of phoneme properties and emphasizes the importance of consistent practice to improve pronunciation accuracy of [tˤ]. By addressing these issues, educators can better support students in mastering Arabic pronunciation, ultimately enhancing their overall language proficiency. The findings of this research contribute to the broader field of phonetics and language education, offering valuable insights for language teachers and learners alike.

Streszczenie:
Pronunciation is an essential aspect of language learning, and it can be a challenging skill for many students to master. However, research has shown that using songs in language learning can be an effective way to improve pronunciation skills (Chen & Liang, 2018; Godwin-Jones, 2019; Lee, 2021; Zahra & Hadi, 2020). One reason why songs may be effective for improving pronunciation is that they provide learners with a model for correct pronunciation. When students listen to and sing along with songs, they are exposed to the correct pronunciation of words and phrases, which can help them to develop a more accurate pronunciation themselves. This research uses qualitative methods, especially interview analysis. One of the most crucial sources in qualitative research to gain an in-depth understanding of how people experience, feel, and interpret the social world is the interview (Dong, 2012). According to Oakley, a qualitative interview is a form of framework where practices and standards can be reached, pushed, and reinforced in addition to being documented (Nasreen, 2019). This research aims to determine students’ perceptions regarding the use of songs as a tool to improve English pronunciation easily. This research was guided by three main research questions: 1. What are the students' perceptions of using English songs to improve their pronunciation? 2. Can English songs help EFL students get better at pronouncing words? 3. How could using music help students pronounce words more fluently? Each song aimed to explore a specific aspect of songs for pronunciation. This study aims to gain insight into the various ways students use songs to learn language, such as saying words and hearing the rhythm and lyrics to facilitate vocabulary learning. Learning can be made more engaging and entertaining by using songs. While learning the target language, pupils feel at ease in a calm environment and pick up the language (as seen by their better pronunciation). They become more open to learning due to lowering their affective filter. Songs also aid students in better comprehending and pronouncing key phonological elements.

This study aims to exam the research questions of how behavioral contracts and shadowing affect the pronunciation and speaking of adult Chinese beginners. In this study, the researcher conducted interventions on three adults who did not have any experience in learning Chinese. To examine the research questions, the accuracy of Chinese pronunciation and speech of 3 participants were measured and analyzed through the evaluation sheet using the multiple-baseline design across participants, which consist of baseline, intervention, and maintenance 3 stages. To improve Chinese speaking ability, speaking instruction was conducted through behavioral contracts and shadowing, and it was evaluated using Chinese pronunciation and speaking evaluation papers. As a result of the study, the intervention method using the behavioral contract and shadowing improved Chinese pronunciation and speaking ability, and showed a high retention rate in the maintenance test. Even after the experiment, the study participants were using the learned words and phrases in an appropriate situation, and they expressed the expectation that it would be very helpful in studying Chinese in the future as they gained an overall understanding of Chinese. The results demonstrated that the behavior contract and shadowing method had a positive effect on pronunciation and speaking of the adult Chinese beginners.

Globalization and the digitalization of our lives have made it impossible to avoid (inter)cultural encounters. In the traditional classroom environment, students are expected to juggle a myriad of choices almost simultaneously. Factors like grammar, pronunciation, word choice, etc. are all important assessment factors to consider when looking at the accuracy of the students’ target language performance. However this changes considerably in Virtual Exchange (VE) courses with a primary goal of fluency. In this case, the assessment should take into account social cues, silence, turn taking, correction, reactions to new ideas, signal words, and speaker confidence, among others. In this article, we would like to share our ideas of how we assess a fluency course using a modified version of Byram’s (1997) model for teaching and assessing intercultural communicative competence and provide an example of a course design that was particularly successful, in which students worked together to complete a poster about the 100-year anniversary of the Bauhaus School. Additionally, to create an environment that promotes learner autonomy and helps students fully experience empathy, understanding, and tolerance while collaborating, a portfolio of tasks and self-assessment journals were used.
