Undergraduate researchers at research universities are often mentored by graduate students or postdoctoral researchers (referred to collectively as “postgraduates”) and faculty, creating a mentoring triad structure. Triads differ based on whether the undergraduate, postgraduate, and faculty member interact with one another about the undergraduate’s research. Using a social capital theory framework, we hypothesized that different triad structures provide undergraduates with varying resources (e.g., information, advice, psychosocial support) from the postgraduates and/or faculty, which would affect the undergraduates’ research outcomes. To test this, we collected data from a national sample of undergraduate life science researchers about their mentoring triad structure and a range of outcomes associated with research experiences, such as perceived gains in their abilities to think and work like scientists, science identity, and intentions to enroll in a PhD program. Undergraduates mentored by postgraduates alone reported positive outcomes, indicating that postgraduates can be effective mentors. However, undergraduates who interacted directly with faculty realized greater outcomes, suggesting that faculty interaction is important for undergraduates to realize the full benefits of research. The “closed triad,” in which undergraduates, postgraduates, and faculty all interact directly, appeared to be uniquely beneficial; these undergraduates reported the highest gains in thinking and working like a scientist.

Streszczenie:
We present an exploratory study of how undergraduates' involvement in research influences postgraduates (i.e., graduate and postdoctoral researchers) and faculty. We used a qualitative approach to examine the relationships among undergraduates, postgraduates, and the faculty head in a research group. In this group, undergraduates viewed postgraduates as more approachable than the faculty head both literally and figuratively. Mentorship by postgraduates presented unique challenges for undergraduates, including unrealistic expectations and varying abilities to mentor. The postgraduates and faculty head concurred that undergraduates contributed to the group's success and served as a source of frustration. Postgraduates appreciated the opportunity to observe multiple approaches to mentoring as they saw the faculty head and other postgraduates interact with undergraduates. The faculty head viewed undergraduate research as important for propagating the research community and for gaining insights into undergraduates and their postgraduate mentors. These results highlight how the involvement of undergraduates and postgraduates in research can limit and enhance the research experiences of members of the undergraduate–postgraduate–faculty triad. A number of tensions emerge that we hypothesize are intrinsic to undergraduate research experiences at research universities. Future studies can focus on determining the generalizability of these findings to other groups and disciplines.

Purpose This study aims to compare similarities and differences in library and information science (LIS) and non-LIS undergraduates’ conceptions and perceptions of smart libraries via drawing analysis. Design/methodology/approach In this study, a total of 156 undergraduate students described their perceptions of smart libraries as drawings and textual descriptions. A modified coding scheme with 8 categories and 51 subcategories was used to analyse the undergraduate students’ drawings. Findings Most of the undergraduate students’ conceptions of smart libraries still involve self-checkout and learning/reading, focusing on information appliances, technical services, activities and objects. The differences are that the LIS undergraduates’ drawings showed smart libraries with robots, interactive book borrowing with technology tools, intelligent services, location-aware services or mobile applications, whereas non-LIS undergraduates presented smart libraries as readers (learners), other activities and no smart technology services. LIS undergraduates focused on providing patron services with technologies. Non-LIS undergraduates were more likely to draw a complex space with immediate access to books or digital resources, quiet reading and the freedom to engage in library activities. Originality/value The results provide a baseline for future research on the topic and provide preliminary evidence of using the methods to discern LIS and non-LIS undergraduates’ conceptions of smart libraries.

Despite the increasing popularity of faculty-undergraduate research, a dearth of research has investigated factors that predict the professional outcomes of these collaborations. We sought to address this gap by examining a wide range of institutional (e.g., institution type, selectivity, course load) and faculty variables (e.g., rank, years of experience, enjoyment of mentoring) potentially related to coauthored undergraduate publication and conference presentation in psychology. Negative binomial regressions were used to analyze online survey data from 244 faculty members from both graduate-serving institutions (i.e., doctoral, master’s) and primarily undergraduate institutions. The results showed that, after controlling for overall research productivity, faculty at primarily undergraduate institutions were more likely to publish journal articles with undergraduates, whereas faculty at graduate-serving institutions were more likely to coauthor conference presentations with undergraduates. Institutions with higher selectivity, more support for faculty-undergraduate research, and lower course loads produced higher numbers of undergraduate publications. Faculty characteristics were even more strongly related to undergraduate research outcomes. Specifically, publication was most likely with faculty who are of higher rank, have more years of experience, spend more time on research, foster close collaborative relationships with undergraduates, and/or perceive their students as high quality and well trained. By contrast, conference presentation was most likely with faculty who work with more undergraduate students on more projects per year and/or who enjoying mentoring undergraduates. Our findings suggest ways that institutions can facilitate undergraduate publication, which we argue is an increasingly common and achievable outcome.

Undergraduates participate as ungraded volunteers. We believe that graduate students benefit from the challenge and honest feedback that undergraduate role players provide. Undergraduates reported academic benefits and increased empathy for the characters they played. The exercises seem to be educationally beneficial and may also help decrease undergraduates' negative stereotyping of persons with psychological problems.

Abstract This teacher education self-study examined music teacher and music teacher educator development through the formal and informal interactions of undergraduate and doctoral students designed to facilitate community. Research questions included: (a) how do undergraduate students describe their interactions with music education PhD students; (b) how do music education PhD students describe their interactions with music education undergraduate students; and (c) how can the researchers change their practices to better meet the needs of the undergraduate students? Data included: a questionnaire from sophomore, junior and senior undergraduate students (N = 34); PhD student journals; a teacher education faculty journal; 12 undergraduate student interviews; an undergraduate student focus group; and six "self study" team focus group meetings. Findings suggest that: (a) interactions were positive but it was sometimes difficult to navigate the interactions; (b) undergraduates specifically value the stories of recent teaching experience that the PhD students can provide; and (c) undergraduates seem to change their views of the PhD students as they (the undergraduates) mature as teachers. Other findings address development of the PhD students as teacher educators. Suggestions for teacher education and research conclude the paper.

The study completes the compilation of the questionnaire on Chinese undergraduates’ moral values from six moral values dimensions: honesty and compliance, civility and self-discipline, love, unity and be helpful, esteem and filial respect. The questionnaire has 31 questions in all, taking advantage of Likert scale. Using this scale, its alpha reliability reach 0.887 with clear internal structure. The validity is well and the model fitting index accords with statistical measurement, which covers the shortage of empirical study on Chinese undergraduate students’ moral values. The measurement, which focused undergraduate moral values, is compiled by a total of 768 valid samples from 6 colleges. Measurement results show that there are sequences of orientation on Chinese undergraduates’ moral values approval, and the order is: Honesty and compliance, civility and discipline, filial respect unity and be helpful, love and esteem; while gender differences do exist. The male undergraduates’ identity level of honesty and compliance, civility and self-discipline, love, and filial respect ranks higher than that of female undergraduates; however, the differences, between male and female undergraduates, on unity and being helpful, as well as esteem are not significant.

Abstract Objective To assess the effect of the change from the 5-year system of coursework to a 4-year system on the achievements of medical laboratory undergraduates. Methods We analyzed and then compared the topics of training and the test scores among all subject individuals in the 5-year vs the 4-year undergraduate program. Results Five-year-program undergraduates and 4-year-program undergraduates were required to complete 50 courses. The average weekly education time in the 4-year program (27.05 lesson-hours/week) was greater than that in the 5-year program (22.99 lesson-hours/week). The proportion of clinical practice in the hospital setting in the 4-year program (26.8%) was higher than that in the 5-year program (24.5%). The average, excellent, and good scores among 4-year-program undergraduates in general education courses, professional basic courses, professional courses, all courses, and common courses were lower than those scores among the 5-year-program undergraduates. Conclusions The 5-year undergraduate program should be adapted to help boost the achievements and practical skills among its students, in helping them adapt quickly to the new, 4-year training plan (which presented a serious challenge in our cohort).

Undergraduates often perceive neuroscience to be a challenging discipline. As the scope of neuroscience continues to expand, it is important to provide undergraduates with sufficient opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills with the aim of encouraging the future generation of basic and clinical neuroscientists. Through our experience of developing the National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition (NUNC), we have accrued an extensive volume of performance data and subjective insight into the delivery of undergraduate neuroanatomy education, which has the potential to inform how to better engage students within this field. More broadly, our group has implemented a technology enhanced learning platform alongside a peer-assisted teaching program. These achieve the dual purpose of compensating for the reduction in dedicated neuroanatomy teaching hours and encouraging undergraduates to develop an interest in the neurosciences. Here, we consider how improving the learning experience at an undergraduate level encourages further engagement in the neurosciences and the importance of this within the wider neuroscience community.

The social media platform is extremely popular among undergraduate students. Along with the increase in social media usage, phenomena such as the fear of missing out are also becoming more prevalent among this group. It is hypothesized that excessive usage of social media contributes to the psychological decline of undergraduate students. This study aimed to examine the relationship between social media usage and the fear of missing out among undergraduate students. In addition, this study also examined the level of social media usage and the fear of missing out. The study adopted a quantitative approach, specifically a correlational research design. Data were collected from 306 undergraduates at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia using the social networking time use scale and fear of missing out (FOMO) scale instruments to measure social media usage and fear of missing out, respectively. Descriptive analysis revealed that undergraduates have a moderate level of social media usage and a moderate level of fear of missing out. Meanwhile, the inferential analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between the usage of social media and the level of fear of missing out among undergraduates. In conclusion, the study results indicate that social media usage does influence the fear of missing out among undergraduates, although the coefficient was weak.

Undergraduate research is an experience that cultivates creative and intentional learners in and out of the classroom. Using unique data from an online survey of faculty members at three diverse colleges and universities, we investigate the individual and institutional factors that facilitate or inhibit faculty members’ willingness to provide undergraduates with research opportunities. We focus our analysis on individual and institutional explanations for faculty participation or non-participation as a research mentor to one or more undergraduates. We examine the influence of demographic (e.g., gender, race, tenure status, discipline) and institutional characteristics (e.g., type of institution, perceived institutional supports) to statistically model the likelihood that faculty members had previously mentored undergraduates in independent research projects. We draw upon these findings to discuss implications for institutions desiring to increase student (and therefore faculty) undergraduate research experience.

In this paper, we define flip teaching as a curricular platform that uses various strategies, tools, and pedagogies to engage learners in self-directed learning outside the classroom before face-to-face meetings with teachers in the classroom. With this understanding, we adopted flip teaching in the design and enactment of one Year 1 and one Year 2 undergraduate chemistry laboratory session at a higher education institution. The undergraduates viewed videos demonstrating the practical procedures and answered pre-laboratory questions posted on the institution's mobile device application before the laboratory lessons. Analyses of the lesson videos, interviews with the undergraduates and instructors, and undergraduate artefacts showed that the undergraduates had developed a better understanding of the theory undergirding the procedures before they performed the practical, and were able to decipher the complex practical procedures. They also experienced less anxiety about the complex practical steps and setup, and subsequently, improved work efficiency. The findings of this study have implications for chemistry educators looking for ways to improve on the design and enactment of the laboratory curriculum to enhance the undergraduates' self-directed learning.

Aim and Objectives: This study aimed to note the dental students perception of challenges faced by them administering first dental injection in patients when they were undergraduates and the need to introduce simulator training for dental injections for undergraduates. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 dental students participated in the study. The study was conducted in national accredited A+ dental college of India, where the participants were presently pursuing postgraduation. The participants had completed their undergraduate programs from different dental colleges of India. The participants were provided with a validated structured questionnaire to note the challenges they faced when administering their first dental injection in patients when they were undergraduates if they had undergone any dental injection simulator training in dental colleges where they had completed their undergraduate program and the need of simulator training for dental injections. The data were collected and statistically analyzed. Results: During the administration of the first dental injection on patients, 82.5% of students were anxious. Students (100%) had not undergone any training for dental injections on simulators as undergraduates. Majority (85.8%) of students agreed that there is a need to introduce an inferior alveolar nerve block simulator for dental undergraduates. Conclusion: First dental injection in patients is associated with high anxiety levels in dental students. Mastering the skill of local anesthesia administration requires practice and time. Hence, the majority of the students agreed that including simulators for dental injections, especially for technically demanding blocks such as inferior alveolar nerve blocks at the undergraduate level, will make them less anxious and more confident.

BackgroundMore breastfeeding interventions targeting female and male undergraduates before they become parents are needed to foster accurate breastfeeding knowledge, positive attitudes toward breastfeeding, and a greater intent to breastfeed. This study aimed to assess the impact of completing a lactation elective course on undergraduates' breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, and intention.MethodsPre- and postcourse surveys were administered to 96 undergraduates from various majors enrolled in a lactation elective.ResultsFrom pre- to postcourse, this study found significant increases in undergraduates' breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, and intent.ConclusionsBecause most undergraduates in the United States become parents only after graduation, universities have an opportunity to foster the knowledge and attitudes needed to breastfeed successfully. As breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes in men and women are strong predictors of breastfeeding intent, initiation, and duration, offering undergraduate lactation elective courses is a promising strategy to improve future parents' breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, and intention, helping to normalize breastfeeding and improve breastfeeding rates.

Clinical learning is essential for nursing students pursuing undergraduate studies to gain experience, skills and knowledge. Clinical internship placement for final-year nursing undergraduates can be stressful as they adapt to their new roles, responsibilities and environment. This study uses a qualitative phenomenological study to explore the experiences of final-year nursing undergraduates pursuing their Management Module Practicum in the Surgical Ward of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Two focus group discussions with eight participants were conducted using semi-structured questions. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was performed using ATLAS.ti version 8 software. Eight reflective writing submissions were analysed for data triangulation. Two primary themes emerged in the analysis: the undergraduates’ emotions before clinical placement and their adaptability to their new roles, responsibilities and environment. Results show that the undergraduates faced difficulties at their initial placement stage. Further understanding of their emotions and adaptability can facilitate the undergraduates’ clinical learning.

Purpose Multiple research studies show a positive correlation between library usage and student retention. At the same time, no formal research studies focusing on the effect of library usage on LGBT student persistence and retention exist. The purpose of this paper is to provide information about today’s LGBT undergraduates, their personal and academic needs, and how academic libraries may meet those needs. Design/methodology/approach The author will challenge the grand narrative perpetuated by LGBT librarians that “libraries save [LGBT] lives” through a review of existing research literature on LGBT undergraduates and their personal and academic needs, where libraries play a role in LGBT undergraduate life, and whether or not academic libraries actually meet those needs. Findings No formal research studies on how libraries play a role in the retention of LGBT undergraduates exist. While LGBT undergraduates share many similarities with their peers, they seek out resources and spaces that the library may be able to provide independently or through collaborations with other units on campus. The existence of campus LGBT resource centers may impact LGBT undergraduate use of libraries. Practical implications The author will provide suggestions for academic libraries to create appropriate resources, services, and spaces for LGBT undergraduates so that they persist at their institutions and graduate. Originality/value This is the first research paper to address the role that academic libraries play in LGBT student retention.

Abstract Introduction The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) Standard 7.3 for the initial education and training of pharmacists1 states student pharmacists and trainee pharmacists must have access to pharmacy professionals to provide professional support and guidance by acting as role models and mentors. Four mentoring programmes exist for Brighton University undergraduates, available virtually in addition to external mentoring programmes, such as Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) mentoring programme. Chang et al2 studied RPS mentoring participants and found previous positive experiences inspired participants to participate in their programme. This work investigates 2021/2022 final year Brighton University pharmacy undergraduate mentoring experience. Aim To survey final year pharmacy undergraduates’ mentorship experience. Methods An online survey consisting of 5-point Likert-scale statements and closed-ended questions, was designed, piloted, and distributed using the JISC online survey platform to final year Brighton University pharmacy undergraduates. Data collected included awareness of mentorship programmes, whether undergraduates had previous mentorship experience, and attitudes towards mentoring using 12 Likert-scale statements each for respondents who were mentors, mentees, and those with no mentoring experience. The data were quantitively analysed using Microsoft Excel version 16.58 and the JISC online survey platform. The 5-point Likert Scale questions were analysed by calculating a weighted average. Ethics approval was received from the Brighton University School of Applied Sciences Research Ethics Committee. Results 48 undergraduates completed the survey. 13 (27%) had previous experience mentoring. This sample was comprised of 8 undergraduates with mentor experience and 10 undergraduates with mentee experience. Four undergraduates had both mentor and mentee experience. In total, 63% (n=39) respondents were aware of the University’s mentoring programmes, 32 (60%) were aware of external mentoring programmes available with 45% (n=24) citing the RPS mentoring programme. A total of 75% (n=6) mentors and 70% (n=7) mentees reported that mentoring aided their professional development. All (n=8) undergraduates who were mentors and 80% (n=8) mentees reported that this was a beneficial experience. Three quarters (n=6) of those who were a mentor and 60% (n=6) who were mentees reported that this improved their employability skills. The main challenge found by mentors and mentees was the amount of time needed to undertake these roles. 16 (46%) undergraduates with no mentoring experience agreed that participating in a mentoring programme would be too much time and effort, 28 (80%) would prefer if their mentor/mentee was from or following the same professional background as them and 20 (57%) agreed they would consider signing up for a mentorship programme if offered to them. Discussion/Conclusion Limitations included a low response, but results obtained were sufficient to highlight issues. Although most undergraduates were found to be aware of benefits of a mentorship programme, these should be promoted further, with realism around time mentoring takes, and opportunities scoped to incorporate time for mentoring in undergraduates’ timetables. Many undergraduates still lack mentoring experience and are not aware of mentoring programmes. Establishing mentoring arrangements within the final year with trainee pharmacists could be a mechanism to address the undergraduate’s preference of mentoring arrangements with the same professional background. Under the background of population aging, the development of pension industry urgently needs colleges and universities to cultivate highlevel elderly service management talents. In this paper, 513 nursing undergraduates were investigated with self-made questionnaire. The results showed that the overall willingness of nursing undergraduates to engage in elderly service management was not high, and there was a significant difference in the willingness of nursing undergraduates with different demographic characteristics (P < 0.05). On the basis of in-depth analysis of influencing factors, the article holds that we should actively promote the cultivation of senior service management personnel at undergraduate level by guiding students to establish a sense of honor, enhancing their professional cognition of pension service, and reasonably positioning the training objectives to adapt to the professional development of nursing undergraduates.

One of the greatest challenges to undergraduate social work education is helping students embrace social work values and develop professional identity. As undergraduates, students are at a developmental stage where the process of identity formation is crucial. This study explores the possibility of enhancing traditional teaching methods with computer-mediated mentoring. A section of graduate students in a second-year practice class mentored a section of undergraduates in a beginning practice class in a semester-long e-mail communication. Following the mentoring experience, the undergraduates demonstrated a measurably greater identification with social work values, marking a significant change in professional identity that was not matched by comparison groups. Those aspects of the mentoring experience that seemed most important to the undergraduates are reported and suggestions for replicating such a project are provided.

Behavioural economics have become hot topic in research and debate in last few decades. In the context of behavioural economics, it is possible to summarize resemblances and create a system based on predication and regularities of errors, by analysing consumer’s behaviour, which allows to solve issues of future process development. In paper “Applying behavioural economics in education: study of undergraduate practices of selecting educational institutions” the authors identify key factors which influence undergraduates to choose higher education institution. The purpose of this paper is therefore to identify key elements of the behavioural economics that can be used to influence undergraduate selection development in favour of higher education institution. Additionally, within the framework of the study are applied insights of behaviour economics, which help guidance general understanding of undergraduate decision making. Particularly focusing on heuristics, that undergraduates are using to ease the complexity of decision making, which can lead to systematic errors and bias. This study per se synopsizes the definite findings of developing behavioural economics, which allows to apply this knowledge to study undergraduate choice in selecting higher educational institution. In this study were used numerous methods, including literature review, interviews with representatives of higher education and behavioural economics experts and surveying undergraduates.

The Dept. of Agricultural Sciences currently offers degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Undergraduate programs in Plant Science, Animal Science, and Rural Development were consolidated within the Dept. of Agricultural Sciences in the late 1980s due to the declining number of graduates. However, no personnel turnover or course changes occurred due to consolidation. Enrollment at the undergraduate level has doubled within the past 5 years. Student enrollment for Fall 1995 included 127 undergraduates and 31 graduate students. Graduation figures projected for 1995–96 include 26 undergraduates and 8 graduate students. Horticulture and Agronomy are now two of the concentrations available for the BS degree in Agricultural Sciences, and Plant Science is an option for the MS degree in Agricultural Sciences. Presently in the plant sciences there are approximately 30 undergraduates and 20 MS students. Faculty and professional staff affiliated with the Cooperative Agricultural Research Program are encouraged to submit teaching proposals to the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants Program, a USDA-funded competitive program for the agricultural sciences. Awards enable grantee institutions to attract more minority students into the agricultural sciences, expand institutional linkages, and strengthen education in targeted need areas. The Grants Program supports teaching projects related to curricula design, materials development, and faculty and student enhancement. Current teaching grants address graduate and undergraduate education in molecular biology and undergraduate education in soil sciences.

Nowadays, a declining interest in psychiatry as well in the professional arena is seen. This attitude is significant for Interns and an important study phase of medical UGs for extreme care of psychiatric patients. The aim was to study and compare the attitude of undergraduate students and medical interns towards psychiatry. It was a cross-sectional study done at Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, Thandalam, Chennai, where a comparison between medical interns and undergraduate students weremade. The study sample consisted of about 100 interns and 200 medical undergraduates who gave their consent for this study. The Attitude towards psychiatry (ATP) questionnaire consisting of 30 questions was given and from the data collected, the mean scores were calculated and analyzed using the Student t-test by SPSS version20. The medical undergraduates exhibited a more positive attitude towards psychiatry than interns (P-value estimated was 0.001). However, only 15% of interns and 7% of medical undergraduates strongly agreed and wanted to pursue psychiatry as their profession. Interns showing negative attitude in psychiatry may be due to strange stereotypic remarks made by peers, existing stigma towards psychiatry, less clinical rotations and less hours of teaching during the undergraduate days.

Abstract Objectives To determine the effectiveness of a comprehensive professional development model (CPDM) adapted for virtual instruction in its ability to improve self-efficacy related to food literacy and development of remote food literacy education. Methods Undergraduate students (n = 12) from two universities participate in a yearlong CPDM. In the first semester, undergraduates attend weekly meetings focused on online learning platforms; building community of practice; reviewing learning models, theories, and pedagogy; and building skills to support social and emotional learning. Undergraduates participate in reflective practice throughout the CPDM to advance their teaching skills. In the second semester, undergraduates develop online modules supporting remote instruction for the learner-centered curriculum Teens CAN: Comprehensive Food Literacy in Cooking, Agriculture, and Nutrition. Undergraduates develop virtual lesson procedures and content to be pilot tested with the community of practice. Results Upon project conclusion, undergraduates will complete a retrospective questionnaire measuring self-efficacy to teach nutrition. They will also participate in an in-depth interview that mirrors the reflective practice, where they reflect on what they gained and wished to change for future CPDM projects. Conclusions In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, utilizing strategies from in-person CPDMs in virtual professional development may provide an efficient, effective, and equitable methodology to connect with undergraduate students and improve their self-efficacy to teach while providing training and skills. This virtual methodology may serve two purposes; decreasing attrition in participation by removing barriers such as travel and scheduling, but also enhancing the delivery of nutrition education through utilization of modern technology. Limitations of remote instruction are numerous, but providing opportunities for undergraduates to develop skills in online education has the potential to broaden the reach of health-focused programming delivered by agencies with limited staff during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the important mechanisms in cancer cell metastasis is the cellular function of a specific cell type called myofibroblast cells. Myofibroblast cells are unique cell types that play an important role in the cancer cell microenvironment. As a step toward integrating the latest peer-reviewed cancer research findings into a general biology remote learning setting, we developed an innovative guest speaker talk to engage first-year undergraduates to develop a prediction on tumor microenvironment. In our article, we describe integrated remote approaches using Jamboard and reflective mentoring to validate and reflect on undergraduate team responses within an inclusive and equitable framework. These teaching and mentoring strategies provide a framework for senior undergraduates to be transformative role model scholars that inspire the next generation of Latinx and Native American undergraduates in important topics related to health and environment and the process of science for general biology undergraduates.

The ability of self-compassion and Confucian coping to predict anxiety and depression were examined in impoverished Chinese undergraduate students. Three hundred and thirty impoverished undergraduates completed measures of self-compassion, Confucian coping, depression, and anxiety. Results showed that higher self-compassion predicted lower depression and anxiety in impoverished undergraduates. Higher pro-setback thinking and responsibility thinking of Confucian coping were related with lower depression and anxiety. Higher fate thinking of Confucian coping was related with higher depression and anxiety. The predictive ability for depression and anxiety of self-compassion combined with fate thinking was better than self-compassion alone. Intervention to enhance self-compassion and reduce fate thinking may be beneficial to mental health in impoverished undergraduates.

Despite the social threats and devastating consequences of indecent dressing on students, female undergraduates in Universities in Anambra State still indulge in it without cognizance of acceptable dressing ethics. In view of the dangers it portends, this study examined body image and self-esteem as culpable factors which predispose undergraduates to indecent dressing. Using correlation research design for the study, two research questions were posed whereas two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. In the method section, we utilized multi-stage sampling technique to manage the 21,532 population female undergraduates in Universities in Anambra State. After sample reduction, a sample of 1,250 female undergraduate students was selected from two public universities in Anambra State. During the survey, opinion of the female undergraduates was elicited using Body Image and Self-Esteem Questionnaire (BISEQ) and Indecent Dressing Scale (IDS). Reliability of both instruments was determined using Cronbach Alpha method and alpha coefficients of 0.71 and 0.69 were obtained for BISEQ and IDS respectively. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation for answering research questions and Regression statistical analysis for testing the hypotheses. The results indicated that there is a positive and significant relationship between body image and indecent dressing among undergraduate students in universities in Anambra State. There is a positive and significant relationship between self-esteem and indecent dressing among undergraduate students in universities in Anambra State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that policies should be made and implemented against indecent dressing in universities.
