Er is nauwelijks empirisch onderzoek gedaan naar de typerende rollen van de Human Resourcefunctie (HR-functie) in Nederland. In publicaties wordt veelal een beroep gedaan op Amerikaanse of Engelse literatuur voor het aanduiden van mogelijke rollen, zonder dat wordt nagegaan of deze ook van toepassing zijn in de Nederlandse context. De bekendste roltypologie is die van Ulrich, met het onderscheid tussen strategic partner, change agent, employee champion en administrative expert. Hoog tijd dus voor empirisch onderzoek naar de invloed van de Nederlandse context. Hierbij maken we een onderscheid in nationale context, organisatiecontext en factoren op individueel niveau. De uitkomsten leiden tot de conclusie dat er gedeeltelijk sprake is van overlap en (h)erkenning van de rollen van Ulrich (vooral als het gaat om strategic partner en change agent), maar dat er daarnaast sprake is van een specifi eke Nederlandse invulling (overlegpartner voor de vakbond) die blijk geeft van de Nederlandse inbedding van de HR-functie in het zogenaamde Rijnlandse model van arbeidsverhoudingen.

Zasedanje Evropskog saveta u oktobru 2019. godine na kojem nije postignuta saglasnost zemalja članica o otvaranju pristupnih pregovora sa Albanijom i Severnom Makedonijom je vratilo politiku proširenja Evropske unije (EU) u žižu medijske i političke pažnje i ogolilo razmere krize politike proširenja EU na Zapadni Balkan. Na insistiranje pojedinih zemalja članica, predvođenih Francuskom, Evropska komisija je u februaru 2020. godine predložila izmene metodologije pristupanja. Cilj ovog rada je da kritički razmotri kako politiku proširenja EU na Zapadni Balkan, tako i novu metodologiju. U istraživanju je korišćen model spoljnih podsticaja Frank Šimelfeniga (Frank Schimmelfennig) i Ulrih Sedelmajera (Ulrich Sedelmeier), koji je razvijen kako bi se analizirala evropeizacija zemalja Centralne i Istočne Evrope putem uslovljavanja koje je EU vršila u procesu pristupanja. Primena ovog modela na politiku proširenja na Zapadnom Balkanu pokazuje da najveći problem aktuelne politike nije u metodologiji pristupanja, već u nekredibilnom uslovljavanju koje je EU u poslednjih dvadeset godina primenjivala u odnosu na potencijalne članice iz ovog regiona. U radu se dokazuje teza da su zemlje članice EU i do sada imale na raspolaganju mehanizme kojima su mogle da odlučnije primenjuju uslovljavanje u odnosu na zemlje Zapadnog Balkana, ali to nisu činile. Stoga uzroke problema politike proširenja treba tražiti u odsustvu strateškog pristupa prema Zapadnom Balkanu zbog krize u samoj EU i zamora od proširenja, te se može zaključiti da reforma ima za cilj da utre put budućem diferenciranom članstvu u EU.

El liderazgo es el proceso de influencia del líder sobre sus seguidores orientado a conseguir determinados objetivos alineados a valores, creencias, principios, necesidades y motivaciones, sobre todo conduce al grupo superando crisis y aprovechando oportunidades. Es así que, el presente trabajo determina el estilo de liderazgo empleado por el jefe inmediato de cinco cooperativas de ahorro y crédito ecuatorianas que poseen activos superiores a 80 millones de dólares. Para el efecto, se aplica el cuestionario de estilos de liderazgo de Sánchez Manchola y los aportes conceptuales de Ulrich, Zenger y Smallwood. Los instrumentos se aplican a una muestra de 1004 empleados en estas cooperativas. De esta forma, utilizando el paquete estadístico SPSS, se propone un modelo de ecuación lineal para el segmento. Los resultados indican que el estilo de liderazgo percibido por los miembros de las cooperativas es SINÉRGICO que, se caracteriza porque los jefes inmediatos son altamente participativos y orientan su gestión hacia el equipo. ABSTRACT Leadership is the process of influence of the leader on his followers oriented to achieve certain objectives aligned to values, beliefs, principles, needs and motivations, above all leads the group overcoming crisis and taking advantage of opportunities. Thus, the present work determines the style of leadership employed by the immediate head of five Ecuadorian credit unions that have assets of over 80 million dollars. For this purpose, the leadership style questionnaire of Sánchez Manchola and the conceptual contributions of Ulrich, Zenger and Smallwood are applied. The instruments are applied to a sample of 1004 employees in these cooperatives. In this way, using the SPSS statistical package, a linear equation model for the segment is proposed. The results indicate that the style of leadership perceived by the members of the cooperatives is SINÉRGICO, which is characterized because the immediate leaders are highly participative and direct their management towards the team. This study investigated the relationship between HR competencies and organizational performance by adapting the Ulrich HR Role Model. The study also examined HR competencies such as strategic positioner, credible activist, capability builder, change champion, HR innovator/integrator, technology proponent and project facilitator. The research is based on 215 HR professionals from 20 consolidated banks located in South-West Nigeria. A quantitative approach was used for the analysis. The findings revealed that all HR competencies also have significant correlation with organizational performance. Furthermore, competency such as strategic positioner and technology proponent provide most impact to organizational performance.

SiC nanometer powders were synthesized by the chemical vapor reaction of the SiH4–C2H4–H2 system in the temperature range between 1423 K and 1673 K. The effects of processing conditions such as reactive temperature, gas composition ratio, and total flow rate on powder characteristics were studied using transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, infrared, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and chemical analyses. A forming mechanism has been proposed for solid and hollow particles in different processing conditions. The experimental results concerning particle growth are discussed according to the model of G.D. Ulrich et al., which considers both collision and coalescence phenomena.

Ulrich (1998) has suggested that intellectual capital is a product of competence and commitment. This broad proposition, though intuitively appealing, does not identify theoretical links between these variables, and has little empirical foundation. This paper draws on organisational behaviour theory to propose a model that specifies mechanisms, intermediate linkages and boundary conditions that predict intellectual capital. In doing so, we respond to a recent call for research that is specific about human resource management-firm effectiveness relationships. Moderated relationships between competence, commitment and control are proposed as predictors of intellectual capital. Implications for future theory and practice are highlighted.

Applying single-species assessment and quotas in multispecies fisheries can lead to overfishing or quota underutilization, because advice can be conflicting when different stocks are caught within the same fishery. During the past decade, increased focus on this issue has resulted in the development of management tools based on fleets, fisheries, and areas, rather than on unit fish stocks. A natural consequence of this has been to consider effort rather than quota management, a final effort decision being based on fleet-harvest potential and fish-stock-preservation considerations. Effort allocation between fleets should not be based on biological considerations alone, but also on the economic behaviour of fishers, because fisheries management has a significant impact on human behaviour as well as on ecosystem development. The FcubEcon management framework for effort allocation between fleets and fisheries is presented, based on the economic optimization of a fishery's earnings while complying with stock-preservation criteria. Through case studies of two European fisheries, it is shown how fishery earnings can be increased significantly by reallocating effort between fisheries in an economically optimal manner, in both effort-management and single-quota management settings.

This study was designed to examine the underlying structure of the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD) in Ulrich (1985). The TGMD was administered to 644 children who were randomly divided into two groups (calibration group and validation group). The calibration group (n = 324) included 150 boys and 174 girls, and the validation group included 160 boys and 160 girls, ranging from 3 to 10 years. A two-factor model was postulated and supported. According to the model, seven variables measuring children’s ability for moving into space loaded on one factor (locomotor skills), while five variables measuring children’s ability for controlling objects loaded on the other factor (object control skills). In addition, the proposed model was found to be invariant across the two groups. Good cross-generalizability of the TGMD appears to support its validity. Physical educators working with young children may use it with confidence when assessing and planning physical education programs involving locomotor and object control skills.

Gerak dasar perlu dikembangkan pada anak taman kanak-kanak. Gerak dasar merupakan dasar untuk mempelajari dan mengembangkan berbagai keterampilan teknik dalam berolahraga dan aktivitas fisik. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh model aktivitas jasmani berbasis perseptual motorik terhadap gerak dasar manipulatif anak taman kanak-kanak. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pra eksperimen, dengan desain penelitian one group pre test and postest design. Subjek penelitian adalah anak taman kanak-kanak yang berjumlah 25 siswa. Instrumen penelitian adalah Test of Gross Motor Development-2 (TGMD-2) dari Ulrich. Analisis data menggunakan uji t, dengan membandingkan rata-rata hasil tes awal dengan rata-rata hasil tes akhir. Hasil penelitian gerak dasar manipulatif, yang meliputi memukul bola diam, memantulkan bola di tempat, menangkap, menendang, lemparan atas, dan lemparan bawah, menunjukkan nilai sig. 0.000 < 0.05, maka dapat disimpulkan ada pengaruh yang signifikan model aktivitas jasmani berbasis perseptual motorik terhadap gerak dasar manipulatif anak taman kanak-kanak. Hasil rata-rata tes akhir kemampuan memukul bola diam, memantulkan bola di tempat, menangkap, menendang, lemparan atas, dan lemparan bawah lebih besar dibandingkan dengan hasil rata-rata tes awal. Penelitian ini hanya terbatas pada satu sekolah taman kanak-kanak Kelas B yang berusia 5-6 tahun.

Syntax, as an important part of grammar, deals with the analysis of sentences and their elements. Many grammarians have paid great attention to sentence complements which, according to the dependent model of grammar, represent a very important part of a sentence. The structure or syntax of a sentence in German is probably the most complex topic in German grammar. One of the grammarians who devoted himself to this field of grammar was Ulrich Engel. Using the dependent model of grammar, Engel managed to bring the syntax of the German language closer to many Germanists in a simple way, and not only in the Germanspeaking area. Infinitive construction and dependent sentences are forms with the help of which certain sentence additions can be realized. Using the model of dependent grammar, this paper explains the process of realization of sentence addition, using examples from a specialized corpus, i.e., the first two chapters of the work Tin Drum (Die Blechtrommel) by Günther Grass, and the analysis of the content led to key answers.

Tests constructed using item response theory (IRT) produce invariant item and test parameters, making it possible to construct tests and test items useful over many populations. This paper heuristically and empirically compares the utility of classical test theory (CTT) and IRT using psychomotor skill data. Data from the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD) (Ulrich, 1985) were used to assess the feasibility of fitting existing IRT models to dichotomously scored psychomotor skill data. As expected, CTT and IRT analyses yielded parallel interpretations of item and subtest difficulty and discrimination. However, IRT provided significant additional analysis of the error associated with estimating examinee ability. The IRT two-parameter logistic model provided a superior model fit to the one-parameter logistic model. Although both TGMD subtests estimated ability for examinees of low to average ability, the object control subtest estimated examinee ability more precisely at higher difficulty levels than the locomotor subtest. The results suggest that IRT is particularly well suited to construct tests that can meet the challenging measurement demands of adapted physical education.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of applying modernity theory to ‘disability history’? Giving voice to people with disabilities, disability history aims to show how disability is a part of broader, complex power relations in society. The article discusses several possible approaches. The framework of modernity and eugenics developed by Zygmunt Bauman is shown to be too one-sided for disability history. Ulrich Beck’s modernity theory proves to be more useful. Actor Network Theory (ANT), and in particular the theory developed by Annemarie Mol, offers the most sophisticated approach to disability history. ANT enables disability historians not only to give voice to people with disabilities, but also to approach disability as existing in multiple ways. This allows scholars to take into account seriously criticism of the influential, so-called ‘social model’ of disability.

AbstractScience and technology generated by Universities has many challenges in reaching commercial product applications, as has been explored in a range of literature. Product design has been identified to add value through various types of contributions in addressing these challenges; however, there remains a gap in literature to explore how and when product development activities can practically be applied to technology development.This paper furthers the idea that the product development process can help bridge the gap between the laboratory and commercial applications by proposing a framework for how Ulrich and Eppinger's product development process can integrate with the STAM technology development model. This is a significant step towards understanding how in practice these disciplines can work together to bring science and technology from the laboratory to products in the marketplace.

TEMAS: fleet-based bio-economic simulation software to evaluate management strategies accounting for fleet behaviour. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 64: 647–651. TEMAS (technical management measures) is a fleet-based bio-economic software for evaluating management strategies accounting for technical measures and fleet behaviour. It focuses on mixed fisheries in which several fleets can choose among several fishing activities to target different stocks in one or several areas. The software combines a management strategy evaluation framework, using a forward-running operating model and a management procedure with a fleet behaviour module simulating both short-term (effort allocation) and long-term (entry/exit) fleet dynamics. The suite of models behind TEMAS can be thought of as an extension of the traditional ICES forecast model. Alternative management scenarios can be compared and evaluated for their bio-economic consequences and robustness to parameter uncertainty. The software is generic and user-friendly, and can be run at several space and time scales.

Participants, 60 children with and without LD between 10 and 13 years, completed the Modified Pictorial Scale of Perceived Physical Competence (Ulrich & Collier, 1990) and an expectancy-value questionnaire measuring perceived importance, usefulness, enjoyment, and gender orientation of selected motor skills. Gender differences in perceptions of physical competence were found in recess and home settings. No significant group differences were observed in perceptions of physical competence. Expectancy-value subscales contributed differently to understanding competence judgments of boys and girls across context. Results are discussed with implications for improving self-concept and expectancy-value among girls toward sport and physical activity.

Love and models of loving relationships constitute an important field of analysis for the contemporary sociology of individuals. Models of loving also illustrate the wide changes that have taken place in the culture of Western individualism and in the predominant value system. Some critics of this culture, like Zygmunt Bauman or Ulrich Beck, argue that romantic love has become outdated and has been replaced by relationships treated instrumentally by lovers, and managed with the rules which resemble the logic of the market. This paper contains a comparison of the romantic love code and Giddens’ confluent love code. By demonstrating the similarities and differences between them, the author answers the question about the influence of the romantic ideal on the contemporary model of love and relationships. She argues that the confluent love code includes many romantic elements, adapted to the cultural reality of the new middle class. Other elements, incompatible with values of this culture, are subjected to processes of commodification and used by consumers’ market.

AbstractIn recent cosmopolitan work, scholars such as Julia Kristeva, Zygmunt Bauman, Jacques Derrida, and Ulrich Beck have represented the stranger as a universal ideal for our global age and Georg Simmel’s stranger in the Exkurs über den Fremden has been emphasized as a model for this ideal. While these uses can be justified by generalized passages in Simmel’s essay, they still omit the problem of European Jewish historical exemplarity. Thus, in the decades before Simmel’s essay, this stranger type was already a well-developed figure related to the so-called Jewish question. Georg Brandes and Henrik Pontoppidan used the Jewish stranger to evaluate the societal changes of the fin-de-siècle period and questions of progress vs. decay. Yet, their work limited the stranger to a specific type of Jewishness not including other marginal existences. Hence, reading Simmel with Brandes and Pontoppidan outlines the boundaries of this stranger type as it raises questions regarding recent cosmopolitan uses of Simmel’s stranger.

Saudi Arabia vision-2030 is mainly focused on industrialization to reduce reliance on oil revenue. Localized Manufacturing (LM) concept, which has gained its importance worldwide in this fast-changing technological world to meet customers’ unique needs of 21st century. Now-a-days, manufacturing industry is shifting from standard product development to customized product development keeping in view the growing unique customer-’s needs. The research objective of this research was to maximize LM Application in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to meet unique customers’ needs. Automobile industry was selected to apply Industry 4.0 technologies i.e., 3D Printing/Additive manufacturing. The specifications, fulfilling the customer’s unique needs have been incorporated to manufacture the desired part by 3D printing/additive manufacturing. Data was collected from Saudi automobiles customers regarding their unique needs on a particular automobile part. Using the Product Design and Development methodology by Ulrich et al data was collected, analysed and as a result of data analysis, a model for maximization of localized manufacturing was developed for implementation of LM technique. Results shows that using Industry 4.0 concept, customers’ unique needs can be satisfied and fulfilled in less time and it will be more economical as compared to standard/conventional manufacturing/production methods. Based on the results of this research a model for maximization of localized manufacturing is developed utilizing Industry 4.0 technique

The quasar 3C273 has been repeatedly observed at radio, mm, IR, optical, UV and X-ray frequencies since December 1983. A complex pattern of continuum variations has been discovered, which can be used to provide model independent physical parameters, and to constrain different models. The main features revealed by our set of observations are: (i)A flux decrease by 40% in the 2–10 kev flux in 20 days in early 1984 (Courvoisier et al. 1987).(ii)Differences between the X-ray light curves at 0.5 keV and 2–10 keV.(iii)A drop in the mm to mid-IR emission by factors 2–4 in early 1986, while the near infrared flux remained stable (Robson et al. 1986).(iv)A decrease in the ultraviolet intensity of ∼40% in about 6 months in 1987 (Ulrich, Courvoisier and Wamsteker 1988).(v)Rapid variability in the infrared and optical emission on timescales as short as one day in 1988 (Courvoisier et al. 1988 and Robson, Courvoisier and Bouchet this conference).

The article presents the results of the theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of the political, understood in its antagonistic dimension, in the context of classical and modern political and philosophical doctrines. The philosophical meanings and political implications of the antagonistic concepts of the political by Carl Schmitt and Chantal Mouffe, as well as the alternative concept of Ulrich Beck, are revealed. The authors interpretation of Schmitts friend-enemy distinction is proposed as an inclusive antagonism that retains its political significance in the presence of an open possibility of its constitution. On the basis of the analysis of U. Becks ideas outlined in his work The Invention of the Political, the theoretical inconsistency of the conflict-free model of the political is substantiated. The comparative analysis of the phenomenon of the political in the concepts of C. Schmitt and Ch. Mouffe has been carried out. The contingent nature of friend-enemy distinction, presented in the concept of Ch. Mouffe, in which antagonism becomes a modus of agonism, is substantiated.

The study presents a short-term effort allocation modelling approach based on a discrete choice random utility model combined with a survey questionnaire to examine the selection of métiers (a combination of fishing area and target species) in the Danish North Sea gillnet fishery. Key decision variables were identified from the survey questionnaire, and relevant proxies for the decision function were identified based on available landings and effort information. Additional variables from the survey questionnaire were further used to validate and verify the outcome of the choice model. Commercial fishers in a mixed fishery make use of a number of decision variables used previously in the literature, but also a number of decision parameters rarely explicitly accounted for, such as price, weather, and management regulation. The seasonal availability of individual target species and within-year changes in monthly catch ration were the main explanatory drivers, but gillnetters were also responsive to information on the whole fishery, fish prices, and distance travelled to fishing grounds. Heterogeneous responses were evident from geographic differences in home harbour, which underpins the need to understand alternative fishing strategies among individual gillnetters better.

The return of religion in western society has resulted in the expression of what is often termed post-secular socio-politics, closely linked to increasingly pluralistic societies that result from globalization. While the public sphere has, in the West, tended to follow a ‘WASP’- derived model of post-Westphalian secular public sphere and the privatization of religion, this model is increasingly under critique and complaint. How might pluralism and the expression of religion be re-thought and re-encountered? This paper, engaging with the work of Ulrich Beck (2004) on “realistic cosmopolitanism” argues for a more localised, urbanised approach and understanding. The public sphere is actually a series of everyday pragmatic engagements and experiences that require a more nuanced evaluation. Critiquing the utopian agendas of much cosmopolitan theory, this paper asks two questions: Firstly, what can the return of religion tell us about late modern society? Secondly, what changes may be necessary to re-engage (with) pluralistic public spheres – and societies? Arising in response to the increasing discussion and debate as how societies can seek to engage with growing religious pluralism, using the central metaphors of ‘the iceberg’ and ‘the canary’ as hermeneutic tools, undertaken within a wider Taubesean hermeneutical reading, it argues for a rethought, pragmatic cosmopolitics that is intermestic; that is, both international and domestic in focus and response.

The study aims to find the different roles of Human Resource Managers on employee engagement in the era of the remote workforce. With many companies undergoing a digital transformation, the number of employees working remotely across different industries increases. Based on the roles defined by Dave Ulrich Model, the study has developed a framework to determine the HR role – employee engagement relationship. The data has been obtained from the primary source – questionnaire and secondary sources – existing research papers for the literature review. For data analysis, this study has used SPSS software. The results revealed that the various roles of HR Managers under have a significant impact on the practices for remote employee engagement. There were three roles of HR Managers (Employee Champion, Change Agent, and Strategic Partner) with seven variables considered; for employee engagement, five variables were considered for the study. All the variables of HR Roles were found to have a statistical relationship with the different employee engagement parameters for the remote workforce. Thus, indicating that HR Managers have a role in employee engagement. The scope and limitations of the study have also been stated.

AbstractCardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death. The gold standard for their diagnosis and treatment are angiographic procedures, which require specialized equipment. The speed of their continued development is important as better technology enables progress in clinical outcomes. This article proposes a new process model for the innovation and development and shows how to optimize it such that it takes minimal time. The conducted literature research identifies this closed loop process model as being unique in comparison to the well-established models proposed by Brockhoff, Cooper, Crawford, Durfee, Ebert, Eppinger, Hughes, Pleschak, Thom, Ulrich, Vahs and Witt. During a long-term observation of the innovation and development process of angiographic systems 672 data sets on 302 topics were collected over 47 months to validate this process model. The data collected is equivalent to efforts worth 30 man-years. This input was used to calculate key process parameters, analyse key process roles, evaluate the use of problem-solving methods and identify key technologies. We recommend to apply a continuous loop process in the context of innovation and development of medical devices. In the analysed datasets a potential of an up to 20% shorter process time was identified. Our results can be used for an Activity Based Costing Approach or be applied to bring new or upgraded angiography systems faster to market benefitting patient outcome due to improved diagnosis and treatment. According to the best knowledge of the authors no comparable data collection relating to angiography systems has been performed and presented anywhere else yet.

Currently, expert-analytical activity is being developed on digital network platforms as sociotechnical systems that organize algorithmized relationships between actors and actant in the field of assessing a problem situation and making decisions to resolve it. The lag in the development of expert and analytical activities in the public administration system of the region leads to a slowdown in the processes of their socio-economic development. The purpose of the presented work was to substantiate the need of the regional management system for a conceptual model of smart configuration of expert and analytical activities on digital network platforms. The author determined that such a conceptual model should be based on 1) the concept of stakeholders (E. Freeman), 2) the critical heuristics of designing social systems (V. Ulrich), 3) the concept of epistemic communities (P. Haas). Its need is determined by three main points: 1) identifying the problematic field of requests and the degree of demand for conducting a social and professional examination with the involvement of representatives of interested parties; 2) digitalization processes that lead to the formation of digital network platforms as the technological basis for public management of new quality and 3) the construction of the concept of smart configuration as its content and technological basis. This model is based on smart configuring, the concept of using an artificial intelligence system to organize optimization models for developing options for socially significant management decisions, taking into account the consolidation of interests and the participation of all stakeholders. Smart configuration enables dialogue and collaboration between key stakeholders. To do this, you need to create a smart application (intelligent relational network configurator).

In light of rapid changes in technology known as Industry 4.0 (IN4.0), this study aims to examine how Indonesian employees perceive the HRM function is being implemented in their organizations using the Ulrich Multiple Roles of HR model, and whether they believe the HR roles are effective to address the challenges of IN4.0. Cross-industry data was collected from 160 respondents representing five priority industries: food and beverages, automotive, electronics, textiles, and chemicals. Through descriptive and factor analysis, results show that the HR function in Indonesia is still widely administrative in nature, and being an agent of change is the least performed HR role. In addition, the results indicated that the HR roles in Indonesia are changing towards a more strategic direction even though the change is slow. HR practitioners must heed the expectations of employees to ensure there are interventions that can be implemented to prepare human capital for IN4.0. This is the first type of research that examined how Indonesian employees perceive the HR roles in Indonesian industries are being performed, adding to the scant literature on HR roles in an Indonesian context, and addressing the need for relevant studies on the impact of IN4.0 and HR roles.

Numerous past review articles by scholars of German history share ideas produced by the religious turn in historiography since the 1970s and 1980s. Although highlighting a still growing groundswell of work focused on the German Catholic minority, these essays typically express discomfort with the relation of their subspecialty to the rest of the discipline. Bemoaning the marginalization of Catholic history and the self-inflicted ghettoization of research narrowly focused on regional traditions, past reviewers have worried about the integration of Catholicism within a larger framework. These past articles summarize phases of research on German Catholicism that produced much scholarship and multiple conceptual frameworks through which to understand the enduring impact of the church. Scholars of the 1970s and 1980s pushed against the grain of Hans-Ulrich Wehler's Bielefeld School to prove that Catholicism contributed more to the liberal democratic development of Germany than had been previously assumed, and by the 1990s German Catholic research focused primarily on the social history of Catholicism. The field of German Catholic history underwent a period of uncertain change during the early 2000s. Many of the German-language monographs on the topic remained wedded to the milieu model, but some younger scholars responded to critiques of German Catholic history by studying women's history or deploying poststructuralist analysis.

Currently, organizations in various sectors have placed employees as valuable assets that must be managed properly so that they are expected to be able to make an optimal contribution in supporting the achievement of organizational targets. BPJS Kesehatan as the only public legal entity that organizes the National Health Insurance-Indonesian Health Card (JKN-KIS) program is deemed necessary to place the function of HR management as one of the strategic aspects that must be managed optimally. This study aims to provide an overview of the suitability of the implementation of HR management at BPJS Kesehatan with various existing literature references and best practices in companies or other organizations that have succeeded in becoming market leaders in their fields. This study uses a literature study based on references in the form of books and previous research on HR management. An important finding in this study is the implementation of HR management at BPJS Kesehatan is following the HR Four Role Model proposed by Ulrich (1997) which has been recognized as one of the references in HR management practices in organizations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is standardize and provide a multidimensional measure for assessing human resources competencies (HRCs) scale. Design/methodology/approach The data collected in this study were 2018 from the 234 people selected from 603 managers and experts in human resources of selected firms existing in the Yazd Industrial Town randomly. Based on the model of HRCs designed by Ulrich et al. (2008), a questionnaire was developed to assess HRCs. Internal consistency and split-half methods were used to obtain the reliability of the instrument. Content validity and construct validity of the instrument were also assessed through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Findings This paper elucidates a key scale for assessing HRCs including three dimensions: knowledge business, functional expertise and managing change. Also, results revealed that two items were then dropped from the questionnaire as they were unreliable, and a final 31 items were extracted to form the scale for assessing HRCs. The coefficients for Cronbach’s α and split-half were 0.963 and 0.947, respectively. In EFA, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test yielded optimal 0.962, and Bartlett’s test was statistically significant. Additionally, three factors with eigenvalues higher than 1 explained 63% of the total variance. Hence, CFA confirmed the results from EFA too. Moreover, the model proved to enjoy a good fit. Practical implications The scale is useful for both researchers and practitioners. Also, the scale provides researchers with a sought-after conceptualization of HRCs. Originality/value Consequently, considering that the validity and reliability indices of HRCs were estimated to be desirable, the authors believe that the developed questionnaire can be used as an appropriate scale for measuring HRCs in future research.

Purpose Based on the human resources (HR) role framework (Conner and Ulrich, 1996), the purpose of this paper is to empirically explore why HR practitioners differ in their strategic partner role positioning. The present study suggests and tests a descriptive model regarding occupational and organizational characteristics associated with strategic HR role positioning. Design/methodology/approach In all, 100 questionnaires were collected from Israeli HR practitioners. Hierarchical regressions were used to test the association between occupational and organizational characteristics and the strategic role perception among HR practitioners. Findings Although the findings only partially supported the suggested model, significant associations between occupational and organizational characteristics and HR strategic positioning were found. HR practitioners in volatile organizational environments adopt a strategic role perception. Moreover, years of experience are also associated with an HR strategic role perception. Specifically, the major predictors of attaining a strategic partner role amongst HR practitioners are location of organizational activities mainly in the metropolitan area, and involvement in major organizational changes. Research limitations/implications The sample had a positive bias of respondents. Questionnaires were delivered mainly to highly educated HR practitioners in notably professional HR departments. Data were based on self-reported one-time questionnaires. Practical implications The research has implications for the processes of academic education and professional training of HR practitioners and also their recruitment in organizations. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, recent studies aimed at exploring sources of variance in the strategic role perception amongst HR practitioners are rather scarce. This research helps to address this gap, while also broadening the literature regarding HR communities in the Middle East.

Background:People living with systemic sclerosis (SSc) often lack access to coordinated, specialized care and self-management support from qualified healthcare professionals. Such gaps lead to significant unmet health needs and inability to get preventive services. The Chronic Care Model (CCM) has been used to guide disease management across a wide range of chronic conditions. The CCM often uses e-health technologies to address self-management problems, connect patients with clinicians and reduce patient travel requirements.Objectives:To evaluate current SSc care practice patterns and elicit patient health technology readiness to define relevant aspects and resources needed to improve SSc chronic disease management.Methods:We employed a cross-sectional survey using the 20-item Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC) instrument to assess how aspects of SSc care align with key components of the CCM.1Six items drawn from the ‘5A’ (ask, advise, agree, assist, and arrange) model of behavioural counselling were included (all 26 items scored on 5-point scale, 1=never to 5=always). Acceptance of health technology was evaluated by adapting and combining questionnaires from Vanhoof2and Halwas3. German and French speaking SSc patients (>18 years) were recruited from university/cantonal hospitals and the Swiss scleroderma patients’ association. Participants completed anonymous paper/online questionnaires. Data were analysed descriptively.Results:Of 101 SSc patients, most were female (76%), spoke German (78%) and had a median age of 60 years (IQR: 50-68). Median disease duration was 8 years (IQR: 5-15), spanning a range of severity (31% limited SSc, 36% diffuse SSc, 3% overlap syndrome). One-quarter (25%) did not know their disease subset.The mean overall PACIC score was relatively low (2.91±0.95) indicating that care was ‘never’ to ‘generally not’ aligned with the CCM. Lowest mean subscale scores related to Follow-up/ Coordination (2.64±1.02), Goal setting (2.68±1.07) and Problem-solving/Contextual Counselling (2.94±1.22). The single items ‘Given a copy of my treatment plan’ (1.99±1.38) and ‘Encouraged to attend programs in the community’ (1.89±1.16) were given the lowest ratings. The ‘5A’ summary score was 2.84±0.97.In terms of technology readiness, 43% completed the survey online. Most participants owned a smartphone (81%), laptop (63%) and/or desktop computer (46%). The overwhelming majority of patients (91%) reported using the Internet in the last year – primarily for communication (e.g. emails, text messages). Participants indicated relatively little experience with e-health applications and participating in SSc online forums or self-help groups.Conclusion:To improve chronic disease management of SSc patients in Switzerland, current care practices warrant reengineering taking CCM components into account. Total allowable catch (TAC) management has in many fisheries, especially mixed fisheries, failed to meet conservation objectives. For instance, for the Faroe Plateau mixed demersal fisheries, the TAC system failed to achieve the objective of an average annual fishing mortality of 0.45 for the three gadoid stocks cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), and saithe (Pollachius virens). Therefore, in 1996, an effort-regulation system with individual transferable effort quotas was introduced to manage the fisheries. Experience has shown that effort management without additional stock-specific measures may not be appropriate for such fisheries. A management strategy evaluation model was developed to compare an effort-management system based on the Faroese example with a TAC system as currently applied in EU fisheries. Results show that when stocks are considered in isolation, a total allowable effort system does not necessarily perform better than a TAC one. It depends on stock status and dynamics, the level of uncertainty, and the reactivity of the system to changes in scientific advice. When the stocks are considered together in mixed fisheries, effort management seems, however, to be appropriate, and interannual flexibility of the system appears to be the best compromise between short- and long-term objectives, as well as between biological sustainability and economic return.

From the start of this century there has been a proliferation not only in the study of neurosciences and the physiology of perception/emotion, but also in its dissemination. This has resulted in countless programs, courses, etc., that pretend to help the designer, be it architectural, advertising, product, packaging or others (Ulrich, R. S. 1999) to appropriately impact the experience of the end user; tendencies such as biophilia, neuromarketing, user centered design, the influence of color in a space (Aseel AL-Ayash, Robert T. Kane, Dianne Smith, Paul Green-Armytage, 2016), or the impact on behavior and the brain when observing works of art (Kendall J. Eskine, Natalie A. Kacinik, Jesse J. Prinz, 2012), are intended to give us answers based on the neurology and physiology of perception/emotion. Nevertheless, it is hard to separate science from pseudoscience, and even to organize into a useful model the copious scientific information available. The objective is to present a theoretical model that incorporates and synthesizes the state of knowledge in this field, to facilitate its application in the diverse art and design disciplines; this will help both the creator-artist to have a better understanding of their process and comprehension of their work, as well as the designer, to be able to predict the impact their projects will have upon the audience they are directed towards. We are talking from photographers and painters, to architects and illustrators, etc. The methodology consists mainly in the exegesis — and organization of the material resulting thereof — of basic text on this field. In this talk, we present the Theory of Emotive Reactions model, that has been developing in Tijuana since the beginning of this century, we give a shallow explanation of its scientific foundations, we point out its correlation with the state of knowledge and we present the basic principles for its application in the diverse artistic and design disciplines. AbstractThe concept oftawḥīd(unity of God) is a central issue inKalāmtheological treatises. The discussion devoted to this concept follows a typical structure, a fact that has been recognized by scholars in the past. Shlomo Pines points to the similarity between theKalāmmodel of discussion and the structure of John Damascene's (d. 750)De Fide Orthodoxa. Pines suggested that it may indicate the profound impact of Christian theology on MuʿtaziliteKalām. Ulrich Rudolph adds two important pieces of evidence to the discussion: He analyzes Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī al-Samarqandī's (d. 944)Kitāb al-Tawḥīdand the Jacobite Moses bar-Kepha's (d. 903) introduction to his Hexaemeron, and argues that the structural and conceptual affinity between them actually indicates an opposite direction of influence than the one suggested by Pines. According to Rudolph, the similarity of the two treatises shows they were written as an imitation of an older Muʿtazilite book, which constituted a prototype for the discussion on the concept oftawḥīd. This paper will challenge Rudolph's thesis in two ways, first by questioning his arguments concerning the sources of theKitāb al-Tawḥīd, and second by suggesting an alternative assumption, which will strengthen Pines's theory regarding the development of theKalāmmodel of discussion. Through a comparative structural analysis of the works of Māturīdī and bar-Kepha, together with some fragments of earlier Jewish and Christian commentaries on Genesis, will rise the possibility that this model of discussion existed first in the Christian exegetical treatises assigned to Genesis and had already developed before it appeared in theKalāmworks.

Objective: HRBPs working in the State-owned entity (SOE) industry face a few challenges that inhibit them from being true partners to senior management teams. This research concentrated on whether coaching skills could be included in the Human Resource Business Partner (HRBP) competency model and assist HRBPS in their engagement with senior managers. Research Design & Methods: A qualitative research design was selected to gain insights from the perspectives of HRBPs employed in SOEs in Gauteng, South Africa. All participants had over two years of relevant HRBP experience and participated in a semi-structured interview to solicit their perspectives. The data was consequently analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: The key findings are that the SOE industry is complex to navigate due to the high levels of red tape and capacity constraints. The benefits of coaching, which include enhanced levels of organisational performance and leadership self-awareness, will be achieved in the engagement between HRBPs and senior managers. Furthermore, additional training of all HRBPs on the proposed coaching skills was supported as it was found to be a probable solution to re-position HRBPs as strategic business partners. Contribution & Value Added: This paper positions coaching as a central skill for HRBPs, specifically in the SOE environment in South Africa, by combining two leading competency frameworks, the Ulrich and GSAEC competency frameworks. Although HR is an established field, coaching is relatively emerging with limited frameworks for the profession. This paper addresses the need for guiding frameworks where the two professions intersect.

In an essay published in 2002, Ulrich Manthe analysed the ancient legis actio sacrament in rem in the light of the speech act theory shaped, above all, by John L. Austin (1911–1960). Almost half a century before, Austin Adolf Reinach, an outstanding member of the phenomenological school founded by Edmund Husserl, developed a theory of illocutionary acts from the perspective of realistic legal philosophy. One of the essential elements of the model developed by Reinach is the theory of social acts. In the fi rst step, the paper focuses on the opening part of the legis actio sacramento in rem. It shows that concerning the activity of the parties during the initial ritual of the law enforcement process, we discover the development from the acts of conviction and assertion, which still do not arrive at the state of social acts, to the social act of informing the other party about the claim. The paper also tries to approach the activity of the praetor and the judge through the theory of social acts. The “mittite ambo rem” on behalf of the praetor is qualifi ed technically as the social act of a command. Without arriving at a fi nal result, the paper makes a first attempt to apply the categories of commandment and enactment to the activities of the praetor and the judge. It leaves this item open to further research underlying at the same time that the application of the social acts might contribute to understanding the relationship between the two actors in ancient law.

At the turn of the 21st century, an occupational disease epidemic began to unfold in Sarnia, Ontario, home to the petrochemical complex known as Canada's 'Chemical Valley.' Given the long latency periods for these diseases, the hazardous exposures that produced them would have occurred over a period of decades during the latter 20th century. This suggests a paradox: what accounts for unionized Canadian men working for decades in conditions that posed such grave risks to their health? Or, put in terms of Ulrich Beck's compelling and influential model: given that Chemical Valley during the second half of the 20th century constituted a quintessential "risk society" of the modern West, where were the forces of "political reflexivity" – resistance leading to change – typically provoked by the excesses of such societies? In this article, I seek to resolve this paradox with a political ecology approach that focuses on workers' embodied experience in the micro-environment of their workplace and community, as well as on the material and social emplacement of petrochemical facilities in the region. The analysis reveals a 'perfect storm' of converging ecological, cultural, political, and economic conditions that allowed local corporations to achieve extraordinary power. Consequently, even as activism for occupational and environmental justice was effecting change in similar industrial centers throughout Ontario and the Great Lakes region, these changes failed to take hold in Chemical Valley. Abstract Background The concept of sustainable human resource management is becoming a core subject of sustainability reports. Current discussions in the literature focus on how to integrate human resource management (HRM) with sustainability issues and emphasise the concept of “sustainable human resource management” rather than “sustainability and human resource management.” This focus requires a more comprehensive company perspective through the lens of company goals, people, processes and the strategic orientation dimensions of an HRM–sustainability relationship. Within this perspective, new approaches are needed to concentrate on sustainable HRM issues. Research aims The aim of this study is to analyse the contents of the sustainability reports in terms of sustainable HR characteristics and HR orientation dimensions. The content analysis design is based on an integrated approach of the classification of sustainable HR characteristics through HR orientation dimensions. The sustainability reports of seven financial institutions from the Borsa Istanbul Sustainability Index (BIST) are analysed for the year 2019 in order to determine to which degree sustainable HR is actively involved in the sustainability reports. Methodology In this study, an in-depth content analysis is performed on corporate sustainability reports of selected companies in order to form the link between HR orientation and sustainability. This content analysis stands on the integration of two different approaches drawn from the literature (Ehnert, 2014; Ulrich, 1997). Findings The results revealed that there are significant differences between the people-oriented scores and process-oriented scores in private banks, while the scores are more balanced in public banks. Additionally, findings support the shift in the public sector from the traditional bureaucratic model to a new management approach that transfers private sector management techniques to the public sector.

This article seeks to investigate the evolving notion of corporate personality from the nineteenth century to the present and the scope for the regulatory effect of law thereon especially in terms of the ongoing management of the relationship between the economic and the social spheres. Utilising the work of the economic historian Karl Polanyi on the rise of the self-regulating market in the nineteenth century, it will suggest that the most appropriate image underlying the dominant legal conception of the company in the twentieth century was that of a black box by which the company was largely isolated from its broader social and political environment as a result of the complex interaction of legal and economic discourses surrounding the emergence of a distinct market-based economic sphere. In the light of the current financial crisis, and even more pertinently against the backdrop of the risk of potentially irreversible environmental degradation, many of the fundamentals of the market-based economic paradigm are presently being called into question. Accordingly, it will be argued, drawing upon Polanyi’s notion of the double movement read in the light of Ulrich Beck’s account of reflexive modernity, that the black box model of the company is increasingly perceived as inappropriate for the twenty-first century and that to attain greater institutional legitimacy there is pressure for the legal conception of corporate personality to be reconfigured as that of a glocalised player open to its environment. The article will conclude by examining the scope of law’s regulatory power to construct such a holistic corporate personality capable of commanding such institutional legitimacy, with particular reference to the significance of s. 172 Companies Act 2006.

Intervertebral fusion surgery for spinal trauma, degeneration, and deformity correction is a major vertebral reconstruction operation. For most cages, the stiffness of the cage is high enough to cause stress concentration, leading to a stress shielding effect between the vertebral bones and the cages. The stress shielding effect affects the outcome after the reconstruction surgery, easily causing damage and leading to a higher risk of reoperation. A porous structure for the spinal fusion cage can effectively reduce the stiffness to obtain more comparative strength for the surrounding tissue. In this study, an intervertebral cage with a porous gradation structure was designed for Ti64ELI alloy powders bonded by the selective laser melting (SLM) process. The medical imaging software InVesalius and 3D surface reconstruction software Geomagic Studio 12 (Raindrop Geomagic Inc., Morrisville, NC, USA) were utilized to establish the vertebra model, and ANSYS Workbench 16 (Ansys Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA) simulation software was used to simulate the stress and strain of the motions including vertical body-weighted compression, flexion, extension, lateral bending, and rotation. The intervertebral cage with a hollow cylinder had porosity values of 80–70–60–70–80% (from center to both top side and bottom side) and had porosity values of 60–70–80 (from outside to inside). In addition, according to the contact areas between the vertebras and cages, the shape of the cages can be custom-designed. The cages underwent fatigue tests by following ASTM F2077-17. Then, mechanical property simulations of the cages were conducted for a comparison with the commercially available cages from three companies: Zimmer (Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc., Warsaw, IN, USA), Ulrich (Germany), and B. Braun (Germany). The results show that the stress and strain distribution of the cages are consistent with the ones of human bone, and show a uniform stress distribution, which can reduce stress concentration.

Abstract Background: Circulating cancer stem cells (cCSCs) are a small aggressive subset of circulating tumor cells with cancer stem cells features: resistance to diverse cancer treatments and the capacity for generating new metastases. Patient-derived xenografts (PDX) are an increasingly accepted tool in oncology, providing biologically meaningful models of many cancer types, and potential platforms for the development of precision oncology approaches. Commonly, mouse models are used for the xenotransplant assessment of potential new therapeutic targets in cancers. However, animal models do not necessarily represent the real world scenario and are costly and time consuming. An attractive alternative to such animal experiments is the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. CAM assay is increasingly used as a rapid cost-effective in vivo drug-testing platform that recapitulates many aspects of human cancers. Methods: In this study, primary cultures from circulating cancer stem cells were established using sphere-forming assays. Subsequently, tumorspheres were transplanted onto the CAM membrane of fertilized chicken eggs to form secondary microtumors. Histopathological analyses were performed to confirm that the CAM tumor had the original morphological profile of the patient tumor. Results: We have developed an innovative reliable in vitro platform for cultivation of CSCs from peripheral blood of breast cancer patients. The number of tumorspheres increased significantly with tumor progression. Patients with metastatic disease had statistically more tumorspheres as compared to patients without metastasis (30 vs 10/100µl blood, p&lt; 0.05). Patients with multiple metastases had more tumorspheres compared to patients with single metastases (60 vs 30/100µl blood, p&lt; 0.05). The number of tumorspheres was positively correlated with Ki-67, Her2 status and grade score in primary breast tumors. Tumorspheres showed self-renewal, growth potential, invasion and differentiation in vivo. Tumorspheres could be successfully grafted onto the CAM and grafting positively correlated with aggressiveness and proliferation capacity of the primary tumor. These tumors growing on the CAM pathologically closely resembled the primary tumor. Conclusion: The number of tumorspheres cultured from peripheral blood of cancer patients and the success rate of establishing PDX directly reflect the aggressiveness and proliferation capacity of the primary tumor. Our results support the CAM model using cCSC as a valuable alternative for xenotransplant models. It allows the establishment of new PDXs and provides a fast, cost-effective, and easy to use preclinical platform for cancer biology research, new drug development, treatment individualization, and biomarker discovery. This exploratory work investigates the burgeoning integration of ‘cradle to cradle’ practices into primary strategic activities of procurement, production and sales by ten London based fashion businesses, analysing how profits are derived from offsetting the high costs of sustainable inputs against savings from innovative strategic choices in the production value chain. This research was influenced by the background knowledge that in the global fashion industry, less than 1 per cent of the recycled textiles are converted into new wearable materials, and even more of these textiles end up in landfills. However, this unsustainable tradition in the fashion industry may gradually give way to a mainstream circular economic best practice in the fashion industry, even as the Mckinsey Report found that sustainability will be a significant factor for consumer purchasing mass market apparels by 2025. Based on the semi-structured interview of the ten fashion business owners and the analyses of internal strategic policy documents including budgets, we adopted Garret Hardin’s ‘Tragedy of the Commons’ and Ulrich Beck’s risk society as the lens view through which the qualitative data derived from these fashion businesses were discussed in order to bring out the illustrative extracts and sub-themes. Through the application of interpretive methodological approach, we were able to generate the themes suggesting the ‘Becksian’ reflexive modernization and dis-embedding mechanisms in analysing the issue of trust in luxury fashion environment. We were able to demonstrate the multidisciplinary and multifaceted nature of the use of modern technology in achieving a closed-loop circular economy in luxury fashion business(es) and its interconnectedness within the concentric layers of the value-chain, which is part of the economy, which is in turn a subset of the society and the environment. As businesses are expected to adapt their strategies to the changing environment, we argue that dematerialization in fashion is still at its infancy, and some deliberate actions on the part of economic policy-makers may be required in due course as this is connected to social sustainability amongst others. This article contributes new empirical data to the understanding of luxury fashion business in a circular economy, which is a departure from the linear economy with its attendant externalities. The adoption of a sustainable fashion business model may be pivotal to combating the inefficiency costs built into the fashion industry, and if successful, may be replicated in other jurisdictions in due course.

Abstract Monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE), the payload delivered by vedotin ADCs, exerts its cytotoxic effects via microtubule disruption and induction of ER stress, leading to apoptosis and tumor cell death. In addition, MMAE also has the ability to induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) and immune modulation in the tumor microenvironment (TME) (Liu, 2020; Gray, 2020). Other clinical-stage and approved ADCs incorporate payloads that also cause microtubule disruption (DM1, DM4), or that drive DNA damage through topoisomerase I inhibition (exatecan) as the primary mechanism of action (MOA). While ADCs with different linker payloads produce clinical benefit, their long-term impact on survival and how they pair with PD(L)1 agents may differ based on their ability to elicit immune modulation. In this study we have investigated how these payloads compare to MMAE in their ability to drive immune changes in the TME and describe how these changes could support anti-tumor immunity and improve outcomes in the clinic.Building upon an initial in vitro assessment in which we observed superior induction of ICD markers and underlying ER stress with an MMAE ADC, we utilized a B7H4-expressing MDA-MB-468 xenograft model of triple-negative breast cancer to further characterize the ICD properties of ADC payloads. Tumor-bearing mice were treated with a single dose of B7H4-targeted antibody conjugated to either MMAE, DM1, DM4 or exatecan. Tumors were harvested seven days after treatment and processed for immunohistochemistry (IHC) to assess changes in immune cell infiltration and analyzed by RNA-seq to determine alterations in gene expression. Payload-driven anti-tumor activity was observed with all ADC treatments, each leading to a similar reduction in tumor volume compared to vehicle or unconjugated antibody. IHC staining of tumor sections for F4/80, a mouse macrophage marker, revealed that of the microtubule-disrupting agents, only MMAE significantly increased F4/80+ macrophage infiltration in both the tumor nests and stroma. Increased F4/80+ macrophages in tumor nests and stroma was also observed as a result of B7H4-exatecan ADC treatment. RNA-seq analysis revealed a unique profile for the MMAE conjugate, with an increase in human transcripts encoding cytokine and type I interferon response genes. In summary, the anti-tumor activity of the B7H4-MMAE ADC resulted in recruitment of mouse innate immune cells to the xenograft tumors. Importantly, immune response genes related to ICD were increased following B7H4-MMAE treatment compared to DM1, DM4, and exatecan conjugates. Together, these data suggest that treatment with vedotin ADCs results in robust immunomodulatory changes in vivo that are distinct from other clinical ADC payloads.
