Streszczenie:
The initial results from the Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey are presented here. Using this redshift survey the luminosity, clustering and dynamical properties of galaxies in the Universe are investigated. The 3-D distribution of galaxies in the Durham/UKST survey appears "cellular” on 50-100h(^-1) Mpc scales (where h is Hubble's constant in units of 100 kms(^-1) Mpc(^-1)) and is clearly more complex than a simple 1-D periodic pattern. The optical galaxy luminosity function of the Durham/UKST survey is estimated and can be fit by a Schechter function. Comparison with other determinations of the luminosity function shows good agreement, favouring a flat faint end slope to M(_b J) ~ -14.The redshift space 2-point correlation function clustering statistic is estimated from the Durham/UKST survey. Comparison with previous estimates from other redshift surveys again shows good agreement and the Durham/UKST survey gives a detection of large scale power above and beyond that of the standard cold dark matter cosmological model on 10-40h(^-1)Mpc scales. The projected correlation function is also estimated from the Durham/UKST survey and is compared with models for the real space 2-point correlation function. To estimate this real space correlation function directly, a new application of the Richardson-Lucy inversion technique is developed, tested and then applied to the Durham/UKST survey. The effects of redshift space distortions on the 2-point correlation function are investigated and modelled in the non-linear and linear regimes. The 1-D pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies is measured to be 416 ± 36 kms(^-1) which, while being consistent with the canonical value of ~ 350 kms(^-1) is slightly smaller than recently measured values. However, this value is inconsistent with the ~ 1000 kms(^-1) value as measured in the standard cold dark matter cosmological model at a high level of significance. The ratio of the mean mass density of the Universe, Ω, and the linear bias factor, b (relating the galaxy and light distributions), is then calculated to be Ω(^0.6)/b = 0.45 ± 0.38. This favours either an open (Ω < 1) and unbiased (b = 1) Universe or a flat (Ω = 1) and biased (b ~ 2) Universe.

Streszczenie:
Using ethnographic data from the Pakistani Muslim community in Manchester, I argue that the role of mosques, Imams and mosque committees has taken place in an environment of conflict in which Pakistani Muslims have struggled to construct a Muslim identity. In part, the British Pakistani Muslim community has established and maintained a religious identity through the negotiation of faith practice in schools, halal meals and the construction of purpose built mosques. These phenomena reflect the growing confidence of a British Muslim identity which must be understood in the context of debates surrounding „multiculturalism‟, „integration‟, „exclusion‟ and „recognition‟ of identity. In addition to understanding the development of religious identity in Manchester, I also examine the radicalisation of a certain section of the Muslim youth and government responses to this perceived threat. I examine the ways in which Manchester Muslims, especially those connected to mosques engage with state political institutions and how they perceive „secularism‟. I offer a typology of the political behaviour of Muslims in relation to participation in the political process. Finally, I argue that a lack of conflict resolution training and an implicit belief in Manichean dichotomies of conflict has fragmented relationships among mosques and Imams in Manchester which has exacerbated the position of British Pakistanis in particular and British Muslims in general.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines how non-governmental organisations (NGOs) claim legitimacy in the UK national context with the aim of increasing the understanding of how NGOs’ access to power is justified. The thesis argues that the limits of current theories on NGOs and legitimacy do not enable proper scrutiny of the organisational complexities involved and proposes that Beetham’s approach to legitimacy is more fruitful. A Beethamite analysis is based on scrutinising NGOs’ legitimacy-in-context. This involves examining NGOs’ normative structures and internal organisation of power in order to explain and assess their legitimacy claims. It explores the legitimacy claims of three UK NGOs by applying a Beethamite analysis to interrogate their legitimacy claims. The NGOs that are my unit of analysis are enmeshed in complex organisational hierarchies that extend beyond the UK territory. Understanding the internal organisation of power in these hierarchies is important for identifying legitimacy sources that underpin NGOs’ legitimacy claims. The three NGOs are Amnesty International UK, Greenpeace UK and Cafod. The case study of Amnesty International UK shows how the legitimation of power is justified internally where the members of the UK section legitimise the representational powers of the International Secretariat. This is contrasted with the normative sources of legitimacy that are more commonly used to justify Amnesty International UK's legitimacy claims and which ignore members as an important source of authority. The analysis in the case study of Greenpeace UK demonstrates how it is a representative unit of Greenpeace International. It also highlights how scientific knowledge has become a legitimacy source that justifies Greenpeace UK's legitimacy claims with implications for how to assess their legitimacy claims. The case study of Cafod analyses how Cafod claims legitimacy as a Catholic agency and how it is institutionally embedded in the Holy See. Cafod is primarily a social agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. The case study demonstrates how Cafod's sources of legitimacy are primarily Catholic and that this causes legitimacy problems when Cafod uses secular rather than theological sources of legitimacy to justify its policies. One of the main conclusions of the thesis is that a differentiated approach is needed for analysing NGOs’ legitimacy claims, one that takes into consideration the context of NGOs’ legitimacy claims, their internal process of legitimation and their sources of legitimacy, when assessing their access to power. The lack of an appropriate regulatory framework, and in particular the systematic exclusion of politically oriented NGOs by UK regulators, hinders the advancement of proper assessment and understanding of NGOs’ role in society.

Thesis, University of Manchester, 2016. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/the-potential-impact-of-fast-reactors-and-fuel-recycling-schemes-on-the-uks-nuclear-waste-inventory(aca90f35-6df0-4b38-b568-99d12c2619bf).html.

Streszczenie:
This work considers the impact of fast reactor fuel cycles on the UK's nuclear waste inventory, focusing on the disposition of the UK's plutonium stockpile and spent fuel from new build nuclear reactors. Reprocessing spent fuel from nuclear reactors has led to a large stockpile of civil plutonium in the UK. At the end of reprocessing the stockpile was estimated to be 112 tonnes. This large stockpile of separated plutonium poses a proliferation concern and there is no strategy at present for UK plutonium disposition. The NDA's position paper in 2014 stated the re-use of plutonium in a reactor as a preferred option. These options included Mixed OXide (MOX) fuelled Pressurised Water Reactors (PWR) and the use of plutonium in a Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR), PRISM, operated as a once-through plutonium burning fast reactor. As yet a preferred option has not been selected by the government. Nuclear power is the UK's largest source of low-carbon electricity. Current plans aim to build 16 GWe of new reactors by 2050 to replace the UK's current fleet. This work considered PWR MOX and once-through SFRs for UK plutonium disposition, comparing their relative merits to the direct disposal of the plutonium stockpile in a geological repository. The waste performance of disposition options were compared using assessment criteria based on: Technology Readiness Level (TRL), final stockpile mass, repository size and radiotoxicity. To maximise the reduction of the UK's plutonium stockpile, closed SFR fuel cycles were also considered with scenarios aimed at improving waste performance. Once-through and closed SFR fuel cycles were also considered for the disposition of spent fuel from new build reactors. Research presented in this thesis shows that UK waste disposition options are highly dependent on fuel cycle operating parameters. In once-through plutonium disposition options all scenarios increased repository size compared to direct disposal. Once-though SFRs increased repository size the least, where as PWR MOX reduced the stockpile mass most significantly. The most significant improvement in waste performance, using a closed fuel cycle up to 2150, required short reprocessing times and americium reprocessing. There were no additional improvements of significance with curium reprocessing and the choice of metallic or MOX fuelled SFRs had little impact on waste performance. Preferred fuel cycle scenarios are dependent on the priority given to different assessment criteria. To compare fuel cycle scenarios on an even basis, decision analysis methods were presented using assessment criteria results from the fuel cycles modelled in this work. Decision analysis methods were designed so that the reader can apply their own priorities, through the use of weightings, to the assessment criteria to determine preferable fuel cycle scenarios.

Streszczenie:
In capital-intensive organizations formed to plan new infrastructure development projects, the promoter of the project (as a single organization or as part of a coalition) rarely controls all of the critical resources required to achieve the system-level goal. Instead, the direct control of interdependent resources is diffused across multiple legally independent stakeholders (Lundrigan, Gil and Puranam, 2015). As such, the core structure in these so-called 'megaproject' meta-organizations is a classic empirical instantiation of a pluralistic setting (Denis, Langley and Rouleau, 2007). In pluralistic settings, the authority to make strategic decisions is diffused across actors with heterogeneous objectives, interests, values and expertise. Hence, to achieve the goal, the promoter needs to cooperate with multiple stakeholders. Since some critical resources are not transactional or measurable, the cooperation problem is not a 'buy' problem. Instead, resolving the cooperation problem necessitates a search for mutually consensual solutions that reconcile conflicting interests. Moreover, this search unfolds without recourse to top-down authority characteristic of unitary organizations. Therefore, the promoter has to play a coordinating role that traverses organizational boundaries to coalesce competing preferences into a one-off plan. Against this backdrop, this doctoral research investigates how designed rules and structures influence consensus-building during the collective development process. We conduct the research by drawing on two cognitive lenses consolidated in two vast bodies of literature that have remained largely disparate: organization design (Puranam, Alexy and Reitzig, 2014; Burton & Obel, 1984; Lawrence & Lorsch, 1967; March & Simon, 1958; Mintzberg, 1979) and collective action (Ostrom 1990, 2005). Combining these two research streams allows us to investigate how to resolve the coordination and cooperation problems inherent in pluralistic settings. Our research method is a single case study with embedded units of analysis. This method allows us to probe deeply into operational details while maintaining the holistic features of the focal phenomena (Yin, 2009; Yin, 2013; Siggelkow, 2007; Eisenhardt & Graebner, 2007). Our focal case is the planning stage of High Speed 2 (HS2), a new multi-billion-pound cross-country railway project in the UK. The scheme is promoted by the UK Government. However, the planning effort has required that the Government share local decision rights for planning choices related to the stations along the route with multiple local authorities. These local authorities are independent, resource-rich stakeholders who are impacted by local choices, and they have deep knowledge of local needs and constraints. Thus, in the HS2 case, organizing for collective action is a prerequisite for achieving the system-goal. Our research presents two major theoretical contributions. First, we contribute to organizational design literature by advancing our knowledge of how organizations can be designed to achieve system-level goals when decision-making authority is diffused across multiple organizational boundaries. Specifically, we advance our conceptual understanding of polycentric systems--a form of organizing that distributes decision-making authority across multiple local groups of independent stakeholders. As such, we illuminate the designed processes and structures that enable the core actors in a polycentric system to integrate effort and reconcile their differences over time. Organization design choices are about designing governance structures that enable and constrain collective action. Hence, we also contribute to the project management literature with insights on the governance of the planning stage of megaprojects. Specifically, we offer a deeper understanding of how to organize an inter-organizational setting to make planning decisions and manage interdependencies with the environment. Furthermore, we reveal that ambiguous evaluations of megaproject performance are rooted in collective efforts to resolve coordination and cooperation problems. Our research is grounded in the planning effort for the HS2 project and thus embedded in the UK context. We, therefore, encourage future studies to investigate the generalizability of our claims on organizing for collective action in other institutional contexts.

Panda, Akash. "nuKSM: NUMA-aware Memory De-duplication for Multi-socket Servers". Thesis, 2021. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/5246.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
An operating system's memory management has multiple goals, e.g. reducing memory access latencies, reducing memory footprint. These goals can conflict with each other when independent subsystems optimize them in silos. In this work, we report one such conflict that appears between memory de-duplication and NUMA management. Linux's memory de-duplication subsystem, namely KSM, is NUMA unaware. Consequently, while de-duplicating pages across NUMA nodes, it can place de-duplicated pages in a manner that can lead to significant performance variations, unfairness, and subvert process priority. We introduce NUMA-aware KSM, a.k.a., nuKSM, that makes judicious decisions about the placement of de-duplicated pages to reduce the impact of NUMA and unfairness in execution. nuKSM also enables users to avoid priority subversion. Finally, independent of the NUMA effect, we observed that KSM fails to scale well to large memory systems due to its centralized design. We thus extended nuKSM to adopt a de-centralized design to scale to larger memory sizes.
