Because I am a specialist on Cypriot literature, in particular Turkish- Cypriot literature, this has direct implications for the study of Turkish and Greek language literatures, as well as European minor literatures (as defined by Deleuze and Guattari: 1994). Due to the positionality of the Turkish and Greek literary traditions vis-a-vis European literary establishments, and that of Cypriot literature within the Turkish and Greek literary canons, I have studied literary polysystems theory (especially Even-Zohar: 1978 and 1979) and the relations between central and peripheral literatures. One of the central contributions of my work and research is to study the Turkish and Greek languages and literary traditions in the context and framework of 'contact languages' (Weinreich: 1953), in other words, as linguistic-cultural forms which have developed under co-habitation and mutual influence. I also studied 'othering, processes in Greek, Turkish, Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot literary traditions within the broader context of orientalism and Eurocentricism in the system of European literatures. My work has brought to the fore the plurality of traditions within the domain of Turkish literature as well as the ancient and ongoing multilingual literary traditions of Cyprus. On the one hand, it enabled the study of different traditions within the same linguistic domain (Turkish) to be studied through different categories, such as Turkish literature and Turkish-Cypriot literature. On the other hand, it also allowed for the study of different language literatures under the same roof, such as the Greek, Turkish, and English language literatures of Cyprus as Cypriot literature.

This study explores how Turkish Cypriot identity is defined by Turkish Cypriot opinion leaders and Turkish Cypriot media in view of the longstanding interethnic dispute prevailing in the island. After a short historical review of the problem with reference to interethnic conflict and theoretical considerations pertinent to identity formation, short theoretical account of media and opinion formation, the state of the press in TRNC is displayed. This is followed by the analysis of the indepth interviews conducted within a sample of opinion leaders in TRNC and the press content in the Northern Cyprus at times which can be considered as turning points in the course of the unification negotiations. As for a conclusion, in the light of the findings, the question of whether or not the controversy around the national identity is self reproducing is tried to be answered.

This thesis explores the identity formation of three Turkish speaking social groups – Cypriot Turkish, Kurdish and Turkish (CKT) – living in London in a transnational context. The thesis aims to explore how CKT youths negotiate their identity by looking at their everyday experiences. The everyday experiences of CKT youth are observed through their discourses and interpretations of different interactions. By analysing these interactions, this thesis aims to fill some of the gaps in the literature on transnationalism. The theoretical framework of this thesis is based mainly on Giddens’ theory of identity formation and Faist’s concept of transnational social space. By focusing on the concepts of identity and transnational social space, the thesis examines how the experiences, perceptions and social relations of CKT youth are formed by negotiation and dialogue with the country of origin, host culture and individual attachments. Giddens helps us to conceive identity in a dynamic way and as an outcome of the interaction between structural dimensions, social relations and the self. In this thesis, these structural, social and individual dimensions are operationalised through the analysis of CKT youth interaction with their family, community organisations, school contexts, neighbourhood environments and transnational medias. The concept of transnational social space is used to characterise the identity formation occurring across the borders of nation-states and brought into a single social space. The empirical data are based on 45 semi-structured interviews with CKT youth, 16 semi-structured interviews with first generation CKT migrants, one focus group and participatory observation at five community meetings, as well as several social events organised by CKT youth. The thesis concludes that the choices young people make in terms of their ways of life, the sorts of interactions they have, and their social and cultural preferences frame their positioning within society. Their experiences are diverse and transformative, formed through their interactions with various social and structural aspects surrounding them.

This thesis examines the historical formation and contemporary circulation of competing variants of Turkish Cypriot nationalisms as they are realised in different Turkish Cypriot radio news outlets. Unlike North Atlantic models of journalism, these media are not governed by the values of neutrality nor of a fourth estate role, being closely aligned to political interests. Presently, there is an ideological struggle between two versions of Turkish Cypriot nationalism in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Turkish nationalism' sees TRNC as part of a pan-Turkish nation. Within this ideology, TRNC's future is linked to Turkey and independent of the Republic of Cyprus. 'Pro-federation' nationalism sees TRNC as part of an inclusive Cypriot identity. TRNC's future is in a federation with the Republic of Cyprus. TRNC radio, each station closely affiliated to one of these nationalisms, is one site where national discourses can be accessed and evaluated. In this thesis, Critical Discourse Analysis is used to reveal how participants and their actions are represented in news stories. These shape the way that events appear, contributing to prevailing nationalisms. This analysis is contextualised historically, conceptually and ethnographically with newsroom studies. These produce an understanding of the processes behind a set of highly ideological news texts. This thesis adds to existing academic work which indicates that Cypriot media frame events in ways which aggravate the Cyprus conflict. Unlike other studies, this thesis challenges the myth that national discourses are uniform expressions and allegiances in news media. Instead, the data analysed reveal national discourses are internally fractured, politically differentiated and temporal. Though discourses mostly support interests associated with each station, some pretextual discourses of compromise, cooperation and unity are revealed. Though minimal, these contribute to a solution-friendly atmosphere which frees residents from a life of embargoes, fear and isolation.

The starting point for this research was the gap in performance outcomes at GCSE between Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot girls and their peers from other ethnic groups. Its aim was to explore possible factors contributing to this underperformance, from three perspectives: that of the girls, their parents and teachers. Predicated on the desire to improve outcomes for this group, the study adopted a critical ethnographic design. Bourdieu's sociology of language and power provided the theoretical underpinning and, in particular, his concepts of habitus and linguistic and cultural capital.

This research study investigates the identities of a group of adolescent Turkish Cypriot (TC) students in their final year of secondary education in northern Cyprus, which it is argued, lies on the periphery of Europe. The main aim is to explore the linguistic construction of TC youth identities within school contexts but primarily the classroom in a political context in which the uniquely ambiguous status of Turkish Cypriots within the European Union (EU) continues, and where Turkish Cypriots are considered to be Europeans as individuals but not as a separate political entity. A secondary focus is upon the students’ investment in learning the English language. Identity is defined as a lifelong process of 'the social positioning of self and the other' (Bucholtz and Hall, 2005:586) which is endlessly re-created (Tabouret-Keller, 1997) and the distinction between the terms 'identity' and 'identities' is discussed. The study explores the social construction of TC students' identities using an ethnomethodological case study. By using Conversation Analysis of selected extracts from the data collected through observations of classroom interactions, focus group discussions and interviews, the thesis shows that TC students perceive and enact 'in-betweener identities' in terms of their ethnicity, societal values, age, religion, languages and Europeanness. Being on the periphery of the EU, it is argued that the Turkish Cypriots of northern Cyprus are the ‘peripheral members of the EU, remaining present yet absent. They are personally EU citizens but not as a society and cannot be represented within EU institutions. But will they ever acquire full membership, as any peripheral member would aspire to have or will they remain in between occident and orient? The possible answers to this question and the resulting ideological associations will shape how and to what extent these TC students perceive and enact their identities.

Scholarly and political interest in the Muslim population in Britain has greatly increased since the 1970s. Issues such as the Rushdie affair and the Gulf war brought Muslims into the media spotlight, and provided focal points for the mobilisation of Muslims committed to maintaining Islamic values in Britain. Most research on Muslims in Britain has focused on Asian groups. While these may represent the majority, generalisations about Islam and Muslims in Britain are not possible without examining the experiences of other Muslim communities. This thesis, therefore, sets out to improve social scientific understanding of the varied experiences of Muslims in Britain by comparing women from two Muslim groups: Pakistanis and Turkish Cypriots. The aim of the thesis is to examine the significance of religion and culture in the lives of Pakistani and Turkish Cypriot women in London. The principal objectives are to show (a) how these different and often competing elements are involved in identity formation and transformation, and (b) how they influence, and are influenced by factors such as race, class and gender. My research is based on two years of fieldwork with a variety of different community organisations catering specifically for Muslims, Pakistanis, or Turkish speakers. In addition I carried out thirty in-depth interviews with women who were actively involved in these communities. The aim was to examine the major issues relevant to each of these two groups, as well as to assess the importance of the organisations for Turkish Cypriot and Pakistani women in London. My research found firstly, that despite the vast diversity evident among my informants in terms of their identity and the individual strategies they choose to adopt, their community organisations had a vital and significant role to play in the development and empowerment of women across the generations. Secondly, my findings revealed the complex and changing nature of social identities, as well as the ability of second and third generation Pakistani and Turkish Cypriot women actively to select and interpret competing cultural systems, and to adopt, incorporate or abandon specific elements in their search for an appropriate individual strategy. Young Turkish Cypriots and Pakistani women are shown to be actively defining and redefining themselves as a result of the multifarious cultural and structural factors that they experience both on an individual and group level. 'Race', class and gender are crucial to this process of cultural redefinition, as women's cultural beliefs necessarily reflect the structural forces that affect their lives. The intersection of 'race', class and gender locates individuals in their social positions and subsequently elicits considerations of beliefs and identities.

This thesis examines the similarities and differences between exile experiences of Internal Displaced People and Cypriot refugees in London. The study analyses oral history narratives from Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots who have been forced to leave their home because of the inter-communal conflict of the late 1960s and the war in Cyprus in 1974. The thesis considers the relationship between first-generation and second-generation narratives and how their stories are impacted by the hegemonies of national history and memory, which are dominant storylines in Cyprus. One of the aspects that the thesis considers is the question of memory and nostalgia and how possible it is for Cypriot refugees to develop counter narratives that disrupt the nationalism of state discourse. Central to the methodology is the importance of the dialogic construction of narratives and an autoethnographic approach, through which I consider my postmemory and my family's memory of our village in Cyprus, as a third generation British Cypriot. The thesis findings are that Cypriot refugees are ambivalent about their home and their identity. I propose that the term heterogeneity can enable an understanding of peoples' multiple identifications with different places, times and cultural formations. The diverse intercommunal, cultural and social experiences in the metropolitan, London context gives rise to identity narratives that diverge frdm the dominant, powerful, institutional and political discourses in the homeland. The heterogeneous aspects of Cypriot identities extend to refugees in Cyprus as well, making it difficult to standardise the Cypriot refugee experience. This problematises research studies and thinking that essentialise and homogenise refugee identity. The thesis contributes to debates on exilic subjectivities by problematising the common assumption that refugees are singularly nostalgic for the home that they were forced to leave. The study argues that refugee identities may be subject to change, exhibiting a variety of attachments and allegiances and that Cypriot refugees and their descendents have developed diverse practices of nostalgia for home. This proposal puts into doubt the accuracy of theories of refugee identity which frame their arguments around the `amputee' model, a term I coin to describe the refugee discourse that speaks in general terms of the refugee's desire to return home

This thesis is an attempt to inquire the origins of the Cyprus conflict by analyzing the historical developments that laid the ground for the inter-communal dispute in the late 1950s, while focusing on the structural dimension of the rise of ethnonationalisms in the island. The special emphasis is given to the British period 1878-1960 in the historical analysis since the ethno-religious identity consciousnesses of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities in the island started to turn into ethnonational ones and later into antagonistic nationalisms during this era. The study&rsquo
s underlying premise is that although different identity perceptions existed much earlier among the two communities of the island, the inconsistent policies of the British administration that shifted in accordance with its interests in the Mediterranean region enabled the emergence of a conducive environment for the politicization and manipulation of these diverse identity perceptions. The Greek and Turkish nationalisms gained strength in this era and gradually transformed into antagonistic nationalisms motivated by different political goals about the future of the island. These developments would be the main reason of the inter-communal violence in Cyprus that arose in late 1950s and also in the following years till the permanent territorial partition in 1974.

The London Turkish Cypriot (LTC) community has been described as ‘invisible’, a community at the point of eradication (Aksoy and Robins 2001). For three generations of LTCs the process of cultural identification has seen an evolution from migration and ‘homeland’ association, to critical displacement, assimilation and different perceptions of what is ‘home’. The growing diversity in cultural identification is further reflected in enhanced access to spatial consumption, mobility and choices of emplacement for its younger generations. This PhD is driven by practice-as-research. The practice, and therefore line of reasoning, behind this research is an ongoing, organic process that has shifted throughout the course of the thesis. The documentation of the practice-as-research is included in the accompanying DVD and is integral to the findings of this thesis. The thesis asks how LTC youth ‘perform’ their identities and negotiate a diaspora identity that is in constant flux. The enquiry consists of two main lines of enquiry. First, I am exploring how young people use public spaces through mobility and a ‘mobile’ culture, using mobile initiated technology to further explore the idea of movement and flux. Second, I progress towards a greater understanding of the participating young LTCs’ concept of ‘home’ and what elements of their every day performative behaviour, their environment and relational spaciality construct and support these home-making practices. The thesis addresses complex issues arising out of auto ethnographic practice-as-research of the LTC community, conducted through applied drama practices with its youth. Issues include identifying young participants’ relationship to cultural space, place making and notions of ‘home’ as part of their identity construction process. The thesis also discusses the ‘fit’ of applied drama as a qualitative research tool within this context and the fluidity of changing technologies that can be, and are at times, used to document examples of practice.

Exploring teachers' language practices has become ubiquitous in linguistics research in an attempt to unveil what actually transpires in foreign language classes. One focus on language practices has been to study teachers' code-switching (CS) practices, the alternating from one language to another, which has been researched from a variety of standpoints. These include the amount of CS and the functions for which CS is utilised. Nevertheless, few take into account the possible impact of the teachers' background (e.g. education, biographies, lifestyles) on teachers' CS. Taking teachers' backgrounds into consideration, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the in-class CS beliefs and practices of non-native, Turkish-Cypriot, and Turkish, English language teachers working together in the north of Cyprus. It was deemed significant to investigate the CS beliefs and practices of both Turkish-Cypriot and Turkish teachers in that there has been an increased influx of Turkish teachers and students, as well as international students, (mainly from the Middle East and Africa) in the north of Cyprus due to the foundation of branches of Turkish universities there. The teaching of English was chosen due to its significance both for Turkish-Cypriot and Turkish heritage students. The study incorporates instances from the data in the form of classroom observations, interviews, and focus groups. The results showed that teachers' CS practice may, to a certain extent, differ culturally owing to teachers' cultures of learning. This study adds to the discussion surrounding the necessity for CS studies to consider the role teachers' cultures of learning might play in determining issues such as the amount of or functions for CS in the classroom. The study concludes with recommendations for CS, professional development and for Turkish universities in the north of Cyprus, in order to suggest ways to involve teachers in the planning process and hence to improve the quality of foreign language learning.

This thesis is a linguistic ethnographic study of the introduction of Turkish-language classes in Greek-Cypriot Formal Education, a new initiative taken by the Cyprus Ministry of Education in 2003. Taking into account the history of conflict between the two communities, this project deals with the discursive (re-)negotiations of ethnic difference and ethnic relations that occur in classes where the subject to be taught is the language of 'The Other'. Focusing in particular on two Turkish-language classes in a Greek-Cypriot secondary school, the thesis draws mainly on data collected during five months of ethnographic fieldwork. With post-structuralist and anti-essentialist theoretical tools informing the ethnographic approach, and analytical frameworks from interactional sociolinguistics, it investigates how the details of classroom interaction connect with larger-scale processes, such as: i) the history of intercommunal/interethnic hostility and rival nationalisms; ii) educationald iscourseso f `Hellenic Paideia'; iii) processesa nd discoursess hapedb oth inside and outsideC yprus (i. e. EU entry, initiatives for reconciliation); iv) students' repertoires shaped in contexts outside the classroom (i. e. youth organisations, football fan-clubs etc). At the institutional level, the setting up of the language classes emerged as part of an effort to improve the relations of the two communities and was thus in line with EU processes and the attempts at the time to resolve the `Cyprus Issue'. However, the empirical investigation shows that the ideology of 'rapprochement' underpinning this initiative was not compatible with the hegemonic institutional ideology of Hellenocentrism that sees the neighbouring community as 'The Other'. Both the teacher and the students appeared to recognise the formal lesson as a site that did not permit any alternative discourses (e. g. leftist discourses) and such discourses were silenced, whispered, or met with resistance. The ideological conflict between 'rapprochement' and `Hellenic Paideia' appeared to pose significant complications to the teaching process, and in the classes studied, the Turkish-language teacher struggled to mediate the two ideologies and simultaneously deal with the history and the current situation in Cyprus. Nevertheless, when talking outside the frame of a formal lesson, there were students who appeared competent in discussing Cyprus politics and demonstrated the ability to handle the tension caused by the ideological contestation involved.

The Cyprus problem has now been an ongoing dispute for 40 some years. The two main ethnic communities, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, has since the unrest following independence in 1960, been separated both in space and mind. A military coup, supported by Greece, followed by a Turkish invasion, caused a violent division of the island in 1974, a division that remains today. The UN has facilitated dialog and negotiation between the communities since the establishment of UNFICYP in 1964.The objective of this study is to identify whether the parties have been and are aiming for long-term or short-term perspectives in negotiation. With the help of the theoretical framework of Conflict transformation, resolution and management the study aim to answer the question – What signs of conflict transformation could be identified within the high level peace negotiation process in Cyprus?The study will be done through a process tracing case study of the peace negotiations in the Cyprus conflict. The study aims at depicting the negotiation process from 1974 and onwards. This study aims to generate insights into the business start-up activities of Turkish Cypriot business owners in the restaurant and the legal sectors in North Cyprus and Britain, by drawing cross cultural comparisons between the two sectors, and the two countries. The research objectives are to examine the business start-up reasons for Turkish Cypriot restaurateurs and lawyers; to identify and investigate, the 'forms of capital' (Bourdieu, 1986) that they acquire and deploy; and to compare and contrast the business start-up activities of Turkish Cypriots cross-nationally, North Cyprus and Britain, and cross-sectorally, restaurant and legal sectors. Methodologically, the research draws on extensive fieldwork with 66 participants drawn from two different sectors in both countries. Applying a critical realist methodology, experiences of participants are examined by analysing rich interview material and documentary evidence. Business start-up activity of Turkish Cypriots is a multi-faceted phenomenon, which is examined in this thesis by looking into the interplay of agentic and structural influences. The agentic influences, such as individual reasons for financial betterment, serving to their community groups, desire for independence, are intertwined with structural factors. The most important structural factors appear to be the importance of family and changing socio-economic conditions. There are cross-country and cross-sectoral variations in the degree to which these factors influence business set-up experiences. The thesis makes empirical contributions to this field of study. There have been extensive studies which have touched on ethnicity, sectoral differences, cross-national variations and individual forms of capital. However, there has not been a study which looked at the complex intersection of these key structural influences on business set-up activity. This study fills this gap and contributes to our understanding of mainstream and minority ethnic business start-up experiences between business start-up experiences in one ethnic community across two sectors and two countries. Empirically, the research findings reveal that both agentic and structural influences shape 'business start-up activity of Turkish Cypriots in restaurant and legal sectors, in North Cyprus and Britain.

Conflict in deeply divided societies often has a profound impact both on the societies in which the conflict is located, and on the surrounding states and societies. Constitutional engineers working in such societies are inevitably attracted to power-sharing as a means of stabilising inter-group relations. Consociational democracy is a form of power-sharing democracy which is particularly attractive for a divided society, because its demands on the society are relatively few. It aims to separate the communities in the conflict as much as possible, while emphasising elite co-operation in the formal institutions of government. A difficulty with consociational democracy, however, is that the elite co-operation it requires to function is also required for the system to be adopted, yet will not necessarily be present. Cyprus is an excellent example of the difficulty of gaining agreement on a consociational regime for a divided society. In 1963, the consociational Republic of Cyprus collapsed as a result of mistrust between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. In 2004, a consociational system of government was designed for Cyprus by a team of UN experts under the direction of then-Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. The system of government was rejected in April 2004 at a referendum, and, consequently, was not adopted. This thesis examines why Cyprus has thus far been unable to adopt a political settlement. Failure is as hard to explain as success. Success may have many fathers and failure none, but there are as many possible causes of a failure as of a success. There is also the difficulty of the counter-factual: what facts would need to be different to produce success where experience is only of failure. The thesis systematically examines possible causes of failure, including the idea of consociational democracy itself, the particular consociational designs proposed for Cyprus, and the influence of historical aspirations and experiences. Particular attention is paid to the idea that there may be key factors which must be present before a consociational solution can be adopted. The factors, selected for this case study for their apparent relevance to Cyprus, are elite co-operation, segmental isolation, a balance of power between the disputant groups, and the ability of the international community to offer incentives for compromise. It is argued that these factors, especially elite relations and the complex web of causes which determine these, are central to an explanation of the Cyprus experience.

It is important to consider the effects of past conflicts on the current perceptions of the people of Cyprus and of the future generations. This thesis contends that the ongoing division of Cyprus along with the many unresolved issues regarding past conflicts have had a profound effect on how the people of Cyprus perceive new information in regard to their future. The inquiry will explore the historical background of Cyprus and the affects of nationalism. The need for enemies, large group identity, divided societies and the need for dialogue will also be examined in relation to perception and new information. In light of the interviews and the lived experiences in Cyprus questions arise in regard to how the Cypriots will move forward to a solution that is agreeable to both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. With each person's perception being influenced by the past conflicts, pain and suffering how will they move forward? How has protracted conflict and nationalism influenced the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot perceptions to new information including a possible solution in Cyprus?

This thesis aims to investigate the reddediyoruzdemonstrations that took place in the Northern Cyprus in 2016. As Turkey seems to be moving towards a totalitarian Islamist regime, this research aims to study the relation between the Turkish Cypriot community and Turkey. It seems that the relations between the two parties have been tense since the intention of Turkey to open a coordination office in North Cyprus to control the youth, sports and cultural activities with a power over the Turkish Cypriot institutions. The research explores the religious dimension of the tension between the two parties. Results have shown that the main concern of the demonstrations have been the Islamist policies of Turkey on Turkish Cypriots along with granting Turkey an unrestricted power over certain Turkish Cypriot institutions.

This dissertation aims to explore what challenges second generation Turkish immigrants face in the UK education system, specifically in London, which has a high multicultural mix. When addressing Turkish immigrants one has to keep in mind Turkish immigrants consist of three different origins namely Turkish Cypriots, Turkish immigrants from mainland Turkey and Kurdish Turkish immigrants. In this study, these three types of second generation immigrants have been analysed and their problems have been addressed, namely: underachievement, language, low expectations, bullying, gang involvement, identity crisis and parental issues. Solutions have been proposed in order to tackle the challenges that Turkish immigrants face in the UK.
Esta dissertação tem como objetivo explorar o que desafia a segunda geração de imigrantes turcos a enfrentarem o sistema de ensino do Reino Unido, principalmente em Londres, mistura multicultural. Ao abordar os imigrantes turcos, tem de se ter em mente que há três origens diferentes, ou seja cipriotas turcos, turcos da Turquia continental e curdos. Neste estudo, estes três tipos de imigrantes de segunda geração foram analisados e os seus problemas foram resolvidos, nomeadamente: insucesso, língua, baixas expectativas, o bullying, envolvimento com gangues, crise de identidade e questões parentais. As soluções foram propostas, a fim de enfrentar os desafios que os imigrantes turcos enfrentam no Reino Unido.

The drive that initiated this doctoral thesis was the absence of a resource that investigated social trauma’s effect on business ethics; therefore this thesis investigates the relationship between social trauma and business ethics practices aiming to make the first contribution on an academically untouched topic. As in the case of individual psychology, social psychology also examines matters on a case-tocase basis for a clear understanding of the underlying phenomena and complex processes. Hence, considering the past and the current characteristics of Cypriot Turks of North Cyprus, they were chosen as the case study society. In order to explore social trauma’s impact on business ethics, different disciplines were uniquely synthesized through particular lenses; large group psychology, business-government-society relationship and individual ethical decision-making. The absence of previous work in this area suggested exploratory, qualitative research to be the optimum approach. Rich primary and secondary data were collected through interviews, observations, photographs and documents. The resulting data analysis and findings contribute to the current body of research on business ethics, social trauma and business-government-society relationship at the empirical and conceptual levels. The key contribution of this research is to substantiate the link between social trauma and business ethics, and the way social trauma causes unethical behaviour through its effect on the institutions and individual-social interaction. Furthermore, a model of social trauma and business ethics relationship was developed which also provides a framework for potential future research in other social contexts. Even after decades, social trauma can impact on the conduct of business and can interfere with the individual ethical decision-making process in multiple ways; the causes and consequences of this are discussed in depth. The way this impact occurs and its particulars may differ from one large group to another, and this should be noted before the framework is applied to any other society.

The dynamics in U.S.-Turkey relations in both 1964 and 2003 continued to be between a large global power and a medium regional power in the framework of a global threat that required regional cooperation. In both cases the priority of the global power was the fight against the global threat and this created expectations from the medium power ally in the region, who -in both cases- had its own reservations about the issue, considering its own national interests. The analysis of the 1964 Crisis shows that both U.S. and Turkey would have five main sources of influence over their foreign policy decisions leading to disagreement in 1964: the dynamics in the U.S. Turkish relations as one between a global power and a regional partner; domestic concerns of both countries; unaligned goals of the two parties; the international circumstances; and the influence of signaling failures and previous interactions. When we analyze the 2003 Crisis in light of these findings we see that all the main issues seem to be consistently relevant, though their effects might have changed slightly. Overall, both cases reveal that the above-mentioned five factors determine the outcome of interactions between large global powers and medium powers in the region.

Firtsly, we outline the escalation and the background of the conflict in Cyprus, which have led to the Turkish intervention and consequent division of the island. This research contributes to the development of a greater understanding of the intergroup relations between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots in Cyprus. We focus, specifically, on the perspective of the low-status groups members, the Turkish Cypriots, and on the outcomes in terms of well-being. 234 citizens participated through and online questionnaire. In line with the Rejection-Identification Model, we found an indirect effect of perceived discrimination on well-being through the identification with the in-group. The model was extended to include the contact and culture adoption based ingroup acculturation. Results show that ingroup acculturation does not substitute ingroup identification as a protective mechanism, but derives from it. Finally, we analyzed the moderation effect of out-group identification on the effect of in-group identification on well-being, showing greater well-being when Turkish Cypriots choose a dissociative strategy. Results are discussed in the context of intergroup relations model’s adaptation to the study of deeply divided societies.
