Streszczenie:
Foodborne pathogens pose a significant hazard to food safety. Most cases of foodborne illnesses are caused by bacterial pathogens that have infiltrated the food chain at some point, from farm to kitchen. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately one-third of individuals in developed countries are affected by foodborne pathogens each year. Although there are studies on Hypericum perforatum L. in the literature, research in Turkey remains limited. Therefore, the aim is to contribute to the literature by studying H. perforatum samples from the Yaraş region of Muğla province in Turkey. This study specifically aims to investigate the antimicrobial activities against foodborne pathogens and the antioxidant activity of H. perforatum in Muğla. The in vitro antimicrobial activities of flower components from plants grown in Mugla were evaluated using the disc diffusion method and broth dilution test. Additionally, the extracts underwent ABTS (2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) free-radical testing to evaluate their antioxidant activity. The extract exhibited a maximum inhibition zone of 16 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes. Notably, S. aureus and L. monocytogenes demonstrated the lowest sensitivity to H. perforatum methanol extract (1625 µg/mL). The methanol extract displayed moderate antioxidant activity, with a 53% ABTS radical scavenging capacity. Consequently, the extracts of H. perforatum exhibited both antimicrobial and antioxidant potential.

Streszczenie:
The Muğla Basin is one of the most well-documented coal basins of Anatolia, SW Turkey. Previous studies mainly focused on coal geology, as well as on the environmental impacts from trace elements emitted into the atmosphere during coal combustion. However, the environmental impacts from coal utilization also include groundwater contamination from hazardous trace elements leached from exposed lignite stockpiles or ash disposal dumps. In the present study a comparative assessment of the combustion, as well as the leaching behaviour of trace elements from sixteen lignite, fly ash and bottom ash samples under various pH conditions is attempted. The samples were picked up from three regions in the Muğla Basin, namely, these of Yeniköy, Kemerköy and Yatağan. Proximate and ultimate analyses were performed on all samples. Quantitative mineralogical analysis was carried out using a Rietveld-based full pattern fitting technique. The elements Ag, As, B, Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Hf, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr, U, V and Zn were grouped according to their volatility during combustion and their leachability in the various types of samples. The pH of the leaching agent little affected the leaching trends of most elements and the mode of occurrence proved to be the major factor controlling primarily combustion and to a lesser extent leaching. The elements were classified into 7 classes with increasing environmental significance with Mo, Sr and V being the most potentially hazardous trace elements in the Muğla region.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Gender differences in autopsy findings. SAMPLE SIZE AND CHARACTERISTICS: 175 autopsy reports of suicide by hanging. RESULTS: Among 2534 autopsies, 175 (6.9%) cases involved hanging. Most (76%, n=133) were males; the median (interquartile range) age was 42.0 (29.5), the male/female ratio was 3:1. Suicide notes were found in 42 cases; 81 (24%) were from men. The most common reason for suicide was a mental illness (n=51, 29.2%), followed by family problems (n=26, 14.9%), but the cause was unknown in 42 cases (24.0%). More than half of the events were covered in the news media (58.9%). Rope was most commonly used with women preferring a softer material. Men were more frequently single than women. Men were more frequently single and not actively working than women ( P =.026 and P ≤.001, respectively). The incidence of atypical hanging was higher for males than females ( P <.05). CONCLUSION: The findings showed that there were some statistically significant differences in socioeconomic and mental health factors between men and women in hanging suicide. This study may serve as the basis for more comprehensive studies to investigate the causes of suicide. LIMITATIONS: Single-center, retrospective. CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None.

Mycophagy (fungivory) performs numerous important ecosystem functions for fungi, plants, and animals. Fungi serve as food for diverse mammals, ranging from bears, Ursus spp., to shrews, Sorex spp. However, among the many mammals reported to eat fungi, hedgehogs and other insectivores have been poorly studied. Based on microscopic examination of a fecal sample collected from an Eastern European Hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor) near Ula-Muğla, Turkey, we provide the first confirmed evidence of mycophagy by hedgehogs and review the literature on hedgehog mycophagy.

Only two species of Cephennium Muller & Kunze, 1822 were previously known from Turkey and the Middle East including Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Iran. An examination of material collected during numerous field trips toTurkey and Jordan in the past four decades revealed that the Cephennium fauna of Turkey is remarkably diverse. In total, 25 named species are recognized, diagnosed, illustrated, and assigned to four species groups. Based on zoogeographic, morphological, and additional evidence, C. bodemeyeri Reitter, 1903, previously a subspecies of C. perispinctum Kolenati, 1846, is elevated to species rank. Twenty-three species are described for the first time: Cephennium fractum spec. nov. (Turkey: Bursa, Balıkesir, Kocaeli, Canakkale), C. infractum spec. nov. (Turkey: Bursa), and C. immutatum spec. nov. (Turkey: Izmir, Muğla, Adıyaman) of the C. perispinctum group; C. ericinum spec. nov. (Turkey: Ordu), C. varispinosum spec. nov. (Turkey: Ordu), C. victrix spec. nov. (Turkey: Sinop), C. spinigerum spec. nov. (Turkey: Bartin), and C. digitale spec. nov. (Turkey: Zonguldak) of the C. ericinum group; C. reductum spec. nov. (Turkey: Konya, Antalya, Mersin, Kastamonu) of the C. jonicum group; C. corruptum spec. nov. (Turkey: Mersin, Adana), C. marasicum spec. nov. (Turkey: Kahramanmaraş), C. dolucanum spec. nov. (Turkey: Kahramanmaraş), C. fimbriatum spec. nov. (Turkey: Adana), C. besucheti spec. nov. (Turkey: Kahramanmaraş), C. affimbriatum spec. nov. (Turkey: Kahramanmaraş), C. kartalicum spec. nov. (Turkey: Gaziantep), Cephennium nemruticum spec. nov. (Turkey: Adıyaman), C. unguicum spec. nov. (Turkey: Aydın), C. deplectens spec. nov. (Turkey: Izmir, Manisa), C. sicaferum spec. nov. (Turkey: Aydın), C. geminum spec. nov. (Turkey: Antalya), C. duplum spec. nov. (Turkey: Muğla), and C. jordanicum spec. nov. (Northwest Jordan) of the C. corruptum group. Several additional species, all of them represented exclusively by females and most likely belonging to the C. corruptum group, remain undescribed. A key to the named species of Turkey and the Middle East is provided. The distributions of the species recorded from Turkey are mapped. In an appendix, C. liguliferum spec. nov. (Southeast Bulgaria), a close relative of C. bodemeyeri and C. perispinctum, is described and illustrated. Streszczenie:
Introduction: External and internal autopsy findings of suicidal hanging were evaluated retrospectively in Muğla, Turkey. The relations between macroscopic autopsy findings and age, gender, nature of the ligature, position of the knot, and the ligature marks were assessed. The aim of this study was to describe autopsy findings of the hangings and discuss the regional differences. Method: The reports of 175 hanging autopsies between 2013 to 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. Macroscopic external and internal findings were evaluated and compared statistically. Results: Among the 2534 autopsies, the cause of death was suicide by hanging in 175 cases (6.9%). The male-to-female ratio was 3:1, 76%(n = 133) of the cases were male, 24% (n = 42) were female, the mean age was 44.9(SD = 19.3) years. Suicide by hanging was most prevalent in the 25–44 age group and among men. Complete hanging was more common than incomplete hanging, and softer materials were more commonly used in incomplete hangings. Females utilized soft materials more than males. Males used atypical hanging more than females. Bilateral hemorrhage in the neck muscles was more common with typical hanging. There was a significant relationship between tongue protrusion and hemorrhage at the clavicular head of sternocleidomastoid muscle. Conclusion: In this study, which includes a large series, some regional and gender differences were observed. Careful and detailed macroscopic examination was important to diagnose antemortem vitality findings.

AbstractThis paper discusses some of the results of a geo-archaeological survey conducted in 2014 in the marble quarries at Göktepe near Muğla (the ancient region of Caria). During the survey we examined a dossier of both already known and newly recorded rock inscriptions and textual and pictorial graffiti (prominently including crosses) from District 3, Quarry C (= Quarry GO3C). Here, we aim to explore the contents and spatial contexts of these texts and images, and consider them in relation to the pottery finds and literary sources, in order to throw new light on the history of the quarry. The texts and images suggest that at some point the site was abandoned as a quarry and, probably already in late antiquity, resettled by hermits.

Diatoms are one of the components in the littoral zone and the most productive in terms of O2 production and primary production. Despite their importance in these coastal ecosystems, the diatoms of littoral zones of Turkish coastlines have been understudied. In this report, we document the littoral diatoms from Dalyan Iztuzu Beach at the southeast coasts of Aegean Sea. Samples were collected from 6 stations in Dalyan Beach between 2012 and 2016. We report here on the occurrence of 9 genera including, Catenula Mereschkowsky, Cymatosira Grunow, Dimeregramma Ralfs, Diplomenora Blazé, Eunotogramma Weisse, Meloneis Louvrou, Danielidis & Economou-Amilli, Neohuttonia Kuntze, Plagiogramma Greville and Tetramphora Mereschkowsky, as well as 40 taxa as newly-recorded from Turkey. The newly-recorded diatoms are characterized in terms of their morphology and illustrated with light micrographs. For each species, their habitat and geographic distribution along the coasts are discussed.
