Despite Peter Frost’s (1999, p. 128) call for organizational scholars and practitioners to “find suffering as a significant aspect of organizational life,” both have largely remained silent about it. This silence misrepresents the fact that suffering is a pervasive, inescapable, and costly organizational reality. Suffering matters, and a recognition of our general inattention to it exposes an under-appreciated shortcoming of established theories and approaches to management. We must acknowledge, account for, and explicitly investigate suffering if we are to truly understand the full humanity of organizational life. Accordingly, this paper outlines promising areas for future research on suffering in organizations.

Mobility should be at the core of the reallocation of taxing rights debate. With such a premise in mind, this contribution addresses this issue within Pillar One in its two components: the apportionment of taxing rights to market jurisdictions on residual profits of the most significant MNEs worldwide (Amount A) and the standardization of the remuneration of related party distributors that perform baseline marketing and distribution activities in market jurisdictions (Amount B). The aim is to show that not only the mobility of individuals but also that of MNE structures when deciding on their presence in market jurisdictions are relevant in building new paradigms on the allocation of taxing rights at a cross-border level through the specific impact of the said OECD proposal. Even if Pillar One seems doomed to fail, lessons learned from its design and its specific impact on mobility matters should inform further developments in reshaping international taxation. Mainstream psychiatry emphasises controlling symptoms by taking medications. This approach ignores the role of context in shaping illness experiences and how people engage with mental health professionals. The focus on symptom control and medication management also narrows the function of the psychiatrist. This editorial argues that knowledge of patients’ lives is important for providing empathic care that is oriented to the outcomes that matter to patients. In addition, care that attends to the person-in-context motivates and sustains mental health providers by putting meaning back into medicine. Truly patient-centred care demands pushing back against the reductionism of contemporary psychiatry to thoughtfully engage with the complexities of patients’ lives.

This article examines the context surrounding the creation of the un Convention on the Rights of Children, focusing primarily on Article 12, and explains the importance of children having a voice in all matters affecting them. An analysis of the application of Article 12 in the New Zealand courts demonstrates that more work is required to ensure children are full participants in the judicial process, especially considering the ways children’s rights and voices have been unduly constrained by the new Family Dispute Resolution process introduced in 2014. The article also explores the fundamental importance of the involvement of children in political matters affecting them, focusing on a recent Australian model involving Aboriginal children and young people and recommends a reduction in the New Zealand voting age to ensure children and young people have a real voice in political matters and that Article 12 truly fulfils its potential.

Components of compensation have been analysed in previous studies of corporate financial variables of interest but never together to get a sense of the complete picture of what truly matters. This paper includes variable interactions using the difference-in-differences methodology for panel regressions. Data is collected from Capital IQ, Compustat, CRSP, and ExecuComp for S&P 1500 firms from 2006 to 2013. Inside debt is negatively related to a firm’s total risk, idiosyncratic risk, and CEO turnover. Inside debt is positively related to diversification, liquidity, firm value, and return. Overconfidence is negatively related to total risk, liquidity, investment, and firm value. The CEO pay slice is positively related to total risk but negatively related to diversification, liquidity, and firm value. Interactions among these variables lead to an increase in total risk but a decrease in investment, diversification, liquidity, and firm value. Inside debt mitigates CEO risky decision making, whereas CEOs who are overconfident by their option exercise behaviour or their relative compensation to other directors creates a situation where they are encouraged to take on more risk, which, on average, is shown to harm the firm.

AbstractThis article responds to issues raised about global governmentality studies by Jan Selby, Jonathan Joseph, and David Chandler, especially regarding the implications of ‘scaling up’ a concept originally designed to describe the politics of advanced liberal societies to the international realm. In response to these charges, I argue that critics have failed to take full stock of Foucault's contribution to the study of global liberalism, which owes more to economic than political liberalism. Taking Foucault's economic liberalism seriously, that is, shifting the focus from questions of natural rights, legitimate rule, and territorial security to matters of government, population management, and human betterment reveals how liberalism operates as a universal, albeit not yet global, measure of truth, best illustrated by the workings of global capital. While a lot more translation work (both empirical and conceptual) is needed before governmentality can be convincingly extended to global politics, Foucauldian approaches promise to add a historically rich and empirically grounded dimension to IR scholarship that should not be hampered by disciplinary admonitions.

Abstract Most participants in the Sino-Christian theology movement are not affiliated with the church. This state of affairs naturally raises the question whether what scholarship arises is really a kind of theology or merely writings on public and/or political issues with reference to Christian themes. And yet the movement is more influential than the church in the Chinese public realm in terms of its ability to produce a Christian voice. The purpose of this article is first to examine the historical development of Sino-Christian theology over the past several decades. Some particular themes of this movement are then explored. These themes are intertwined with the discussion of polytheistic values, nationalism, and self-identity in times of cultural conflict: all of these matters are of wide public concern. There are evident tensions within the Sino-Christian theology movement: the intention is to show points of difference can be transformed and become a creative drive behind the construction of a new kind of theology in the Chinese public realm.

It was an era of religious strife, incipient nationalism, growing monarchical absolutism, and also of “liberated” Machiavellian cynicism and “will to power”—no “golden age” of moral certainty and equanimity. Somehow, the literary genius of Shakespeare not only avoided these extremes or heresies but implicitly or explicitly critiqued them all, providing a permanent legacy of vivid moral commentary, exhortation, and illustration. This legacy has had an incalculably great ethical influence on the thought, sensibility, and education of English-speaking peoples across four centuries and several continents. Particularly in its nondenominational critique of relativism, it is a precious educational resource that eloquently affirms the fundamental reality of ethics for the person who would be truly human. Ordered liberty is always imperilled by its counterfeit and competitor—licentious libertinism. Shakespeare loved the former and hated the latter, with enduring effect.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed us individually as well as our routines, goals, and motives. Rightly so, some changes may last longer. Importantly, the pandemic has made us understand several lessons, and has tried to enhance our positive perspective regarding life and its requirements. We came to know how quickly we are capable of adapting to changes. These adjustments proved beyond doubt that there’s not much in life that is truly indispensable. We are practising self-care in a multitude of ways. We might not have thought of our power of resilience. Again, mental health took over as an epicentre of overall wellbeing, reminding us of the power of ‘mind matters’ over ‘money matters’. The health sector disparities and unpreparedness to combat any sort of pandemic situation surfaced not only in resource-limited countries like ours but the uneasiness of the developed world became exposed. The pandemic had been a harsh learning experience for all of us, irrespective of our position in the spectrum.

An interesting question arises in the context of the typically medieval description of the universe presented at the beginning of Maimonides' (1138–1204) great law code, the Mishneh Torah. What was Maimonides' own attitude towards that account? Was it meant only as a statement of the best description of nature available at the time (and thus radically distinct from the halakhic (i.e. Jewish legal) matters which make up the bulk of the Mishneh Torah) or was it meant to be a description of the true nature of the universe as it really is, not subject to revision in the light of new paradigms or new models (and thus essentially similar to the halakhic matters in the text)? Answering this question will lead us to a better understanding of Maimonides' understanding of the nature of science and of what I shall call, for lack of a better term, scientific progress. Maimonides will be shown to hold that while sublunar science can reach perfection and completion such is not possible for superlunar science and that to the extent that the scientific matters in the Mishneh Torah deal with the latter they could not have been presented as the final description of the universe as it truly is.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer a profile of Caitlin Jenkins. Design/methodology/approach – Caitlin gives a short biographical account and is then interviewed by Jerome. Areas covered in the interview include her interest in psychiatric diagnosis, the helpfulness of counselling and personal narrative. Findings – Caitlin believes that her recovery was only really possible when she was allowed to tell her own story, to be allowed the time and space to talk about events in her life. She mentions how psychodynamic therapy and CBT prevented her from truly exploring her personal story. Research limitations/implications – While this is of course one person's account, it will find resonance with many others. Practical implications – Reinforces the central role of narrative and its role in personal recovery. Social implications – It stresses the importance of a truly therapeutic relationship. As Caitlin states, this enabled her to begin, “joining the dots of my experience to construct a meaningful personal narrative”. Originality/value – Counselling is often undervalued in contrast to more established therapies. This account demonstrates that what really matters to individuals recovering from mental health problems, is being listened to and being helped to make sense of their experiences.

The question of the reception of Calvin’s ideas in later Reformed theology requires, first, a clear understanding of the various forms of reception. Often historians think of this in terms of continuity or discontinuity, but there is a danger that such terms can lead to the surreptitious intrusion of anachronistic criteria into the historical task. Instead, the historian should set the question of continuity within a broader context, constructed from analysis not only of matters of doctrine, but also of philosophical framework, and the specific questions to which the texts under consideration were addressed. Then, reception itself needs to be understood as a complex matter. There is the reception of specific texts, and the reception of particular ideas and concepts. Both are susceptible to their own particular forms of historical analysis. The former, being textual and empirical, is relatively easy to assess; the latter involves careful attention to communal context, both synchronic and diachronic. Only as these various issues are addressed will scholarship truly begin to map the complex relationship between the theological work of men like Calvin and that of later generations.

Furthermore, I shall not be concerned directly in the strength of claims to need on other people, but rather on oneself. We present here the cosmo-SLICS, a new suite of simulations specially designed for the analysis of current and upcoming weak lensing data beyond the standard two-point cosmic shear. We sampled the [Ωm, σ8, h, w0] parameter space at 25 points organised in a Latin hyper-cube, spanning a range that contains most of the 2σ posterior distribution from ongoing lensing surveys. At each of these nodes we evolved a pair of N-body simulations in which the sampling variance is highly suppressed, and ray-traced the volumes 800 times to further increase the effective sky coverage. We extracted a lensing covariance matrix from these pseudo-independent light-cones and show that it closely matches a brute-force construction based on an ensemble of 800 truly independent N-body runs. More precisely, a Fisher analysis reveals that both methods yield marginalized two-dimensional constraints that vary by less than 6% in area, a result that holds under different survey specifications and that matches to within 15% the area obtained from an analytical covariance calculation. Extending this comparison with our 25 wCDM models, we probed the cosmology dependence of the lensing covariance directly from numerical simulations, reproducing remarkably well the Fisher results from the analytical models at most cosmologies. We demonstrate that varying the cosmology at which the covariance matrix is evaluated in the first place might have an order of magnitude greater impact on the parameter constraints than varying the choice of covariance estimation technique. We present a test case in which we generate fast predictions for both the lensing signal and its associated variance with a flexible Gaussian process regression emulator, achieving an accuracy of a few percent on the former and 10% on the latter.

Crews operating remotely piloted aircrafts (RPAs) in military operations may be among the few that truly experience tragic dilemmas similar to the famous Trolley Problem. In order to analyze decision-making and emotional conflict of RPA operators within Trolley-Problem-like dilemma situations, we created an RPA simulation that varied mission contexts (firefighter, military and surveillance as a control condition) and the social “value” of a potential victim. We found that participants (Air Force cadets and civilian students) were less likely to make the common utilitarian choice (sacrificing one to save five), when the value of the one increased, especially in the military context. However, in the firefighter context, this decision pattern was much less pronounced. The results demonstrate behavioral and justification differences when people are more invested in a particular context despite ostensibly similar dilemmas.

The chosen title for this book, a collection of articles by Scandinavian medievalists, could not be more appropriate for our field, philology truly matters. This implies, as the subtitle indicates, that we read our texts carefully, meticulously, thoroughly, and slowly in order to gain the best possible insights (Nietzsche; here 15). As we all know, while every text represents a large range of challenges, older texts are even much more difficult to handle, whether we think of palaeographical issues, material difficulties, and linguistic and grammatical problems. Medieval Studies has always gone hand in hand with manuscript studies, so there is no question whether philology matters. It is a conditio sine qua non, but it might be relevant, after all, to re-examine the topic at hand once again and to investigate carefully what philology actually means and how it applies to everything we do in our medieval scholarship. It would be a very different question whether philology matters for the present generation, for non-medievalists, or for the modern academy, but this is not the prime purpose of this volume, although many contributors draw significantly from theoretical thinkers such as Friedrich Nietzsche (“Wir Philologen,” 1874/1875), Erich Auerbach (Mimesis, 1946), Ernst-Robert Curtius (Europäische Literatur und lateinisches Mittelalter, 1948), Paul de Man (Resistance to Theory, 1986), Hans-Georg Gadamer (Wahrheit und Methode: Grundzüge einer philosophischen Hermeneutik, 1973), and Edward Said (Humanism and Democratic Criticism, 2004).

Muhammadiyah gives freedom to every organization member to exercise their rights in political life following all of their statements. The right to vote must be accounted for as citizens who act rationally and decisively, in line with the mission and interests of Muhammadiyah, for the sake of the nation and the state. This research uses normative juridical research methods (normative research). The nature of this research is descriptive, which aims to provide an overview of social phenomena regarding the role of psychiatrists in proving psychological violence in domestic violence crimes. Research data sources are primary legal materials, secondary legal materials and tertiary legal materials. The data collection method was carried out using document study techniques, which were analyzed using qualitative analysis techniques. Based on the research results, Muhammadiyah Youth chooses to strive in the life of the nation and state through efforts to develop or empower the ummah to achieve a civil society that is as strong as Muhammadiyah’s goal of achieving a truly Islamic society. Meanwhile, matters related to state policy as a process and result of the government’s political function will be followed through an appropriate and prudent approach following the principle of effective interest group struggle in the life of a democratic country that truly prioritizes the interests of the people and upholds institutional values.

abstract: An examination of the history and development of interdiocesan tribunals reveals their implementation for more than eighty years as a means by which to ensure the proper administration of justice in the processing of causes. In order for this proper administration to occur, tribunals must be populated with ministers whose expertise in the matters to be adjudicated and availability to devote adequate time and energy to the process truly qualifies them for this grave task. The current scarcity of ministers with adequate knowledge of penal law, especially on the level of the particular church, is an obstacle to justice in the processing of penal causes with expedience and accuracy. By combining the ministers and resources of multiple dioceses, interdiocesan penal tribunals could contribute to the removal of this obstacle in the future.

The logic of historical explanation obliges one to understand temporality as a moderator of various effects on political outcomes. Temporal problems remain in the empirical analysis of political phenomena, however, especially as it pertains to categorical data and long-term time dependence. Many theories in political science assert that sequencing matters or that political outcomes are path dependent, but they remain untested (or improperly tested) assertions for which sequence analysis may be valuable. This article briefly reviews the disciplinary origins of sequence analysis and applies the method in order to understand bargaining between actors during national crises. Finally, it explores the robustness of a commonly used sequence analysis metric. The ability to demonstrate and separate sequential effects from accumulative effects—made possible through sequence analysis—constitutes a major step in political science toward analyses that are truly time sensitive.

Patients are sick and vulnerable people who are truly not themselves and are incapable of shopping around for the best deal.Discussions surrounding patient engagement and empowerment often appear to use the terms “patient” and “consumer” interchangeably. But do the two terms hold the same meaning, or is a “patient” a passive actor in the health care arena and a “consumer” an informed, rational decision-maker? Has there been a shift in our usage of the two terms that aligns with the increasing commercialization of health care in the U.S.

Physical changes in both appearance and body proportions are one of the characteristics of puberty. For young women, it is usually marked by menstruation. The purpose of this study is to provide an understanding through deepening the study of women's jurisprudence so that young women truly understand menstruation, childbirth, istihadah and matters related to women's affairs. Qualitative methods with approaches to respondents have opened space for researchers to reveal problems and solutions for respondents. The research population was female students of the Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School who were studying at Paciran 2 Public Middle School. The results of the research have opened up perceptions and understanding for Paciran 2 Public Middle School students in understanding and practicing how to purify from menstruation, childbirth, istihadah and how to carry out worship properly in accordance with sharia.

The socio-demographic context, which includes the co-residence patterns associated with the decisions of young adults on whether to live in the parental household or enter homeownership or renting, is directly reflected in homeownership rates at the aggregate level as a consequence of these decisions. However, the way in which tenure statistics are reported also matters in this respect. This applies specifically to household-level statistics, which are most often used to characterise housing systems. It is therefore possible to ask whether countries with high homeownership rates and, simultaneously, high shares of adult children living with their parents are truly high-homeownership societies. This study identifies the countries for which the reported tenure statistics are more influenced by demographic conditions as compared to other countries. These are the Mediterranean countries and the Central and Eastern European countries (with some exceptions).

ABSTRACT: Ethical issues in connection with the parties' legal representatives may arise in the course of arbitration proceedings in particular matters of conflict of interest. This article examines the specific question of whether arbitral institutions and arbitrators have power to sanction counsel's misconduct especially in the event of conflict of interest. Such power is weighed against parties' fundamental right to choose legal representation and the absence of express provisions granting arbitrators such power in most of the major international arbitration rules and arbitration legislations. International "soft law" instruments which may provide for such powers do not have a binding effect unless embedded in parties' agreement. The article also looks at the very few cases where international arbitral tribunals have dealt with the subject under the arbitration rules of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and UNCITRAL. The arbitrators in these cases have applied different set of international and national rules and have reached different outcomes to the issue. Therefore, developing "truly transnational" ethical rules and an independent body with power to enforce might be needed. Meanwhile, it is submitted that arbitrators have no other choice than determining these matters based on "soft law" instruments and other professional guidelines which remain the widely accepted international standards in the industry.

Consistent with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, this paper describes children’s involvement in a historic human rights case that found the government of Canada guilty of racially discriminating against 163,000 First Nations children. Despite Canada’s efforts to discourage and bar young people from participating, children and youth were among the first and most engaged followers of the case, debunking the myth that children “can’t” or “shouldn’t” participate in legal matters. Children and youth who participate in social change activities benefit greatly from the experience, as do their communities. The participation of children and youth in the First Nations child welfare case demonstrates that young people are truly leaders in reconciliation and social justice; they teach us about how change really happens. Adults have a responsibility to facilitate exciting and creative ways to involve children in the social and legal processes that impact their lives.

This article addresses religion from a legal perspective. It argues that religious matters should be settled outside the secular legal system; otherwise, the secular legal system would not be truly secular. However, religion demands special protection as a public good and social value, as it constitutes an extrinsic constitutional limit of the legal. For a secular legal system, protecting religion ultimately means protecting human beings' pursuit of the suprarational. Protecting suprarationality has three important legal consequences: (a) suprarational acts in the strictest sense should never be validated as legal acts; (b) democratic communities should not use suprarational arguments in legal discourse; and (c) the secular legal system cannot regulate suprarationality or the essentials of the religious community. The protection of religion demands both a dualistic structure that distinguishes the political community from the religious community and the treatment of religion as a right: the right to religion.

ABSTRACTUsing well-known texts by Augustine, Jacques de Liège and Guido of Arezzo, this article tries to show that, despite prior misunderstandings, medieval authors of music theory considered it a given that sensuous pleasure was the ultimate goal of music. Only by way of anachronistic readings of the sources have historians constructed an aesthetics that blended aesthetics with mathematical and theological ideas. A close reading of the sources, taking into account their cultural contexts, reveals the intentions of the authors that are at the root of the texts. Those intentions, it is argued, were not aesthetical, and any attempt to interpret them from such a perspective would be misleading. Yet careful consideration of those intentions opens the view for remarks that are truly aesthetical as well as for hints suggesting that aesthetical judgements, while self-evident, were not considered matters for written discourse but for orality.
