Pełny tekst źródłaThe last decade has shown a very rapid increase in the application of digital computers to virtually all walks of life. This has resulted in a demand for better and faster digital communication links, at reasonable prices. Trellis coded modulation is a fairly recent development in the technology of digital communications that has helped to meet an aspect of this demand. The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town had not undertaken any research in the field of trellis coded modulation at the time this thesis was started. From what was understood of the topic at the time, it was deemed important to develop a foundation of skills and tools for working with trellis coded modulation. It was hoped that such a foundation will give current and future members of the department sufficient background to spot potential applications for the principles of trellis coded modulation.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe continuing growth of the telecommunications industry has created a steadily increasing need for higher performance communications systems - systems that can transfer data at faster rates while meeting stringent bit error rate requirements. In the case of satellite and mobile communications these same systems must also maintain minimum size and power consumption requirements. To help implement this industry demand computer simulations of communications systems can be a viable tool. Simulators can be used to demonstrate feasibility while maintaining minimum research and development costs during the design phase of these new and more complex communications systems. One type of system where simulation has proved helpful has been trellis-codedmodulation (TCM). This paper documents a simulation of a four-state trellis-coded eight- PSK modulation scheme currently being researched at New Mexico State University (NMSU). In the past simulations of convolutionally coded schemes have used binary symbols in the decoding process. In TCM the Euclidean space components of the modulation scheme are used in place of the binary symbols. The simulator under development incorporates these Euclidean signal components which are taken from an eight-PSK signal constellation. Soft-decision maximum likelihood decoding using trellis trace-back techniques are then applied to the Euclidean signal components to recover the simulated transmitted data. The simulator supplies the user with the number of undetected errors generated during a simulation as well as the bit error rate for a given signal to noise ratio. This simulator is intended to provide an environment for investigating improved communication system designs and it is hoped that the results that are obtained from such telecommunication simulators will help satisfy the ever increasing demands of the telecommunications industry. It should be noted that the research being conducted at NMSU on TCM is being directed by Dr. Frank Carden. The development of the simulator was conducted by the author to assist Dr. Carden in the continuing investigation of TCM.

This has been achieved without increasing the receiver complexity based on the number of states in the Viterbi decoder, compared to the uncoded GMSK scheme. Furthermore, these coded schemes are more tolerant to sample timing and carrier phase impairments.Also, the BER performances of the proposed trellis coded GMSK schemes have been extensively investigated by computer simulations for frequency-flat and frequency-selective fading channels. In the case of frequency-selective fading, the Viterbi decoding is made adaptive to cater for the channel impulse response variations with time. With this adaptive receiver, the irreducible BERs of the coded scheme is found to be lower than that of the uncoded. Performance improvements are obtained with a trellis coded GMSK scheme using a constraint length 2 code with a Viterbi decoder of 16 states compared to the 128 states required for the uncoded scheme. Further, the coded scheme has shown less sensitivity to carrier phase errors, compared to the uncoded.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of this project is to build and test a real time simulation for Trellis Coded Modulation(TCM). The tests to be performed are a comparison between Ungerboeck and pragmatic codes and varying and observing different Viterbi decoder parameters for coded 8PSK. TCM is coded modulation which means the choice of modulation scheme is linked with the encoding technique. Convolutional codes are important for an understanding of TCM. They are described by the rate (which is the number of inputs over the number of outputs) and the number of memory elements, v. For TCM schemes, soft decision decoding, based on euclidean distance, rather than hard decision decoding, based on hamming distance, is used. Ungerboeck developed a mapping of encoder bits to channel signals on a constellation diagram. The mapping is called mapping by set partitioning and aims to find the smallest free euclidean distance for a given code. The free euclidean distance is the minimum euclidean distance between output sequences in a code. The asymptotic coding gain is a measure of coding gain based on the free euclidean distance.

Pełny tekst źródłaQuantization of signal set vectors [1,2] could reduce the processing time required to apply the maximum likelihood decoding algorithm of Viterbi [3], to data encoded by a trellis coded modulation (TCM) scheme of the kind proposed by Ungerboeck [4]. Simulations have been performed to determine the effect of different degrees of circular quantization on TCM, using 8-PSK and 16-PSK signal sets, combined with a four state convolutional code. It was found that circular quantization produces good results when 2 or 3 quantization points are placed between signal set vectors.

This receiver utilizes only a small number of high speed components along with a majority of lower speed components operating in a parallel fre- quency domain structure implementable in CMOS, and can process over 600 Mbps with numerous varieties of QPSK modulation, including those incorpo- rating precise pulse shaping for bandwidth eÆcient modulation. Performance results for this receiver for bandwidth eÆcient QPSK modulation schemes such as square-root raised cosine pulse shaped QPSK and Feher’s patented QPSK are presented, demonstrating the great degree of exibility and high performance of the receiver architecture.
