Streszczenie:
In colonial British America ‘travel writing’ found its way into many different literary genres: religious tracts, scientific accounts, and political or promotional writings, often written to make settlement attractive. Travel writing was also often devoted to mapping and describing landscapes for future travellers or settlers. Whatever its genre, however, early American travel writing is unquestionably a form that makes manifest by implication the actual mobility of the travellers themselves and the need for continued and future mobility. This paper will examine this issue in A New Voyage to Carolina (1709), by British travel writer John Lawson (1674–1711) as little attention has so far been paid to the rhetoric of his implicit assumptions about mobility and the importance of emigration. In this post-colonial context, then, this paper argues that A New Voyage stands as a substantial piece of colonial travel writing, one of whose basic, underlying themes is the importance of freedom of movement, both individual and collective. Lawson’s own experience bears this out insofar as, in addition to his travels, he was himself instrumental in the founding of two early eighteenth-century towns in North Carolina, Bath and New Bern, the latter a community of about 300 Palatine and Swiss emigrants.

Streszczenie:
Since the turn of the millennium a crop of travel books by Africans or Africans in diaspora describing their travels within Africa have appeared to assert a fresh African self-representation in travel writing. Noo Saro-Wiwa's travel book Looking for Transwonderland (2012) tells the story of British-Nigerian journalist and travel writer Saro-Wiwa's travels around Nigeria for the first time since the death of her father Ken Saro-Wiwa. Looking for Transwonderland describes Saro-Wiwa's journey all over Nigeria, from Lagos to the north via the east and southwest, including a stop in her father's village in Ogoniland. Saro-Wiwa represents herself as a pioneer, one of the first travel writers of western-published, tourist-oriented travel writing about a country which in global tourism terms is “this final frontier that has perhaps received fewer voluntary visitors than outer space” (p.8).

Streszczenie:
Travel writings’ long literary tradition in the West had often been viewed as a colonial discourse and had prepared a colony of readership, particularly the narratives during the 19th century (Spurr,1993). However, travel writing is relatively new in the Philippines, and a lot of Filipino women are experimenting with writing in the genre. As such, this study examined the types of contemporary travel writings written by Filipino women using Fussell’s categorization (1982) for travel writings according to the writer's intent of travel: explorer, tourist, and travel. Some of the selected texts fit the said categories, while others combined the mentioned classifications. In this study, the explorer category was also expanded to cover traveler's subjective experiences to accommodate some texts that exemplify this type of narrative. Moreover, the study utilized grounded theorizing (Glaser Strauss, 1967; Strauss Corbin, 1990) to classify other travel texts that did not fall into Fussell’s typologies, which resulted in four new categories, namely 1) backpacker; 2) escape/convalescent; 3) pilgrim; and 4) labor worker. The intent of travel adheres to global categorizations but, at the same time, reflects the fast-changing contemporary narratives accommodated into the travel writing genre which attest to how they write down their impressions and introspections on their travel experiences.

The purpose of my thesis is to explore the hlstory of British travel writing and to consider how the literature of exploration, which initially presented itself as factual, evolved into the fictional use of travel writing. In order to provide a context for travel writing, I will be looking at the work of Porter, Mills, Pratt, Chard, Hulme and Youngs before discussing the Grand Tourist ( 1660-1 837) and the growth of mass touri sm under Thomas Cook. In order to consider early-twentieth-century travel writing in this context of mass touri sm, I propose to engage specifically with Peter Fleming's Brazilian Adventure (1933) and Robert Byron's The Road to Oxiana (1937). Evelyn Waugh, at various times, acted both as a friend and a reviewer to both Byron and Fleming. The thesis will then focus upon Evelyn Waugh's work and look at the differences between his travel writing and the fictional use of travel in his fiction. Waugh's writing style has been important to me in the development of my own.

This thesis spotlights the travel and leisure magazine industry within South Africa. It contends that the travel writing genre is susceptible to a number of biases, both past and present, which ultimately affect the way its overall content is produced and presented to the public. This work was substantiated through a set of qualitative interviews with key professionals within the South African travel and leisure magazine industry, as well as through a theme- based content analysis of a number of local travel writing publications. This study adds to a rather extensive line of research written on the topic of travel writing regarding a number of older criticisms of bias including 'othering', escapism, and gendering. However, it also focuses on a number of more modem biases such as direct advertising, advertorial usage, as well as the acceptance of 'freebies' and barter agreements, none of which has been given much attention in previous research. The sheer existence of these and other biases within the modem South African travel and leisure magazine industry exhibits an absolute necessity of examination into such a topic, especially given the importance and overall influence that the travel writing industry has on a country's economic standing and overall image.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation is a history of the idea of travel in South Asia as it found expression in Urdu travel writing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Though travel has always been integral to social life in South Asia, it was only during this period that it became an end in itself. The imagined virtues of travel hinged on two emergent beliefs: that travel was a requisite for inner growth, and that travel experience was transferable. Consequently, Urdu travel writers endorsed travel not to reach a particular destination but to engender personal development, social advancement and communal well-being. Authors conveyed the transformative power of travel to their readers through accounts that traced out their inner journeys through narratives of physical travel, an ideal echoed in an old proverb that re-emerged at this time: “travel is the means to victory.” This study, which draws on extensive archival research from four countries, represents the most comprehensive examination of travel writing in any South Asian language. Through a diachronic analysis of a wealth of new primary sources, it indexes shifting valuations of travel as they relate to conceptualizations of the self, the political and the social. It demonstrates that though the idea of beneficial travel found its first expression in accounts commissioned by a colonial government interested in inculcating modern cosmopolitan aesthetics, it quickly developed a life of its own in the public sphere of print. This dynamic literary space was forged by writers from across the social spectrum who produced a profusion of accounts that drew inspiration from Indic, Islamic and European traditions. In the twentieth century, too, travel writing continued to evolve and expand as it adapted to the shifting dimensions of local nationalisms and successive international conflicts. In independent India and Pakistan, it broke new ground both aesthetically and thematically as it came to terms with the post-colonial geography of South Asia. Yet, throughout this history,Urdu travel writing continued to cultivate the idea that the journey was valuable for its own sake.

Streszczenie:
This thesis looks at travel writing about China crossing three main research axes. The main one is represented by the comparison between Western-authored contemporary travel books and travel blogs. The majority of studies on Western travel writing about China focuses on pre-modern and modern texts, while much less attention has been dedicated to contemporary travelogues. At the same time, by projecting the genre onto the web, this study offers a mapping of the blogosphere and questions the literary and epistemological status of travel writing. Through a close reading analysis, the aim is to outline medial and rhetorical differences and similarities between travel books and blogs, particularly in terms of how China is represented, as well as the way in which travel writers perceive themselves. In this latter respect, interviews with travel authors and bloggers are also included. The second research axis explores the diachronic evolution of Western-authored travel books about the Middle Kingdom. Building on the findings of the first part of the thesis, the analysis looks at texts from the end of the 19th century throughout the 20th century, complementing the attention to pre-modern and modern travel accounts of earlier studies on travel writing about China. The goal is to understand if and how the genre and the representation of China have changed over the last century. The third axis is cross-cultural: in the last chapter a number of contemporary Chinese-authored travel accounts are analyzed. Referring to existing literature about Chinese travel writing, to be highlighted are the rhetorical and medial differences between “classic” and contemporary texts, as well as between books and blogs. Concerning the first research axis, findings suggest that Western travel books are more diversified generically speaking than travel blogs. Moreover, while the former provide a rather composite representation of the country, the latter are mainly devoted to deliver objectified touristic information. As for the second research axis, no substantial shifts were detected in the genre’s features, or in the way in which China has been represented in Western travel writing during the 20th century. Lastly, it is advanced that Chinese travel books are deeply politicized, while travel blogs tend to convey a contemplative representation of the country, more in the spirit of “classic” Chinese travel writing. However, differently from Western writers, both Chinese authors and bloggers manage to portray China from a variety of points of view.

The phenomenon of British women travelers - the forerunners of modern tourism - deserves attention because of the motives of their travels, the directions of their journeys and the permanent mark they left behind, creating the genre of women's travel reportage - women's travel writing. What prompted British women to travel more often than other women? Barbara Hodgson answers this self-asked question as follows. The inhabitants of the United Kingdom of both sexes were eager wanderers and colonizers. Women travelers have left behind descriptions of their journeys in the form of travel reports, which are a source of geographical knowledge about Oceania, among other places and touristic conditions. They are also a testimony to the mentality of 19th century British women. The author uses the historical method and critical reading of this texts of culture.

Passionate about travel, the writers of the Pasoptist era were also tempted to explore the Orient, a sumptuous land full of miracles. In the memorials and travel diaries of Ion Heliade Rădulescu, Dimitrie Bolintineanu, Vasile Alecsandri et. a., the colorful, picturesque and bizarre, of the places visited, the unusual atmosphere of this universe are evoked. Contemplative, the Romanian writers expose in detail the coordinates of the oriental space – a mixture of human entities, of sumptuousness, luxury and misery. All of them still experience the feeling that they have entered a real Babylon. The exotic element is highlighted in geographical, ethnographic, cultural-spiritual descriptions, etc. The journey of the writer-travelers through such lands stimulates not only the initiatory adventure, but also the act of writing.

Reşat Nuri Güntekin, one of the leading writers of Turkish literature in the Republican Period, contributed to Turkish literature with novels, stories, plays, travel writings and articles. The writer, who lived between 1889-1956, served as a teacher, inspector, deputy and French National Education Attaché and a member of the Unesco board of directors. Continuing his literary activities such as Diken, Kelebek, Güleryüz, İnci, Akbaba, Büyük Mecmua, Yedigün, Zaman, Ulus, Vakit, Memleket in magazines and newspapers, the author publishes his novels and stories, as well as criticism and travel articles. Güntekin's writings, which included his observations during the years he was an inspector in Anatolia, were published in 1936 under the name Anadolu Notes. Since 1947, Reşat Nuri Güntekin began to publish his impressions in Paris, where he went on duty, in a series in his own newspaper, Memleket. This series consists of 15 writings under the heading Passenger Notes and Passenger Book. Güntekin, who tells about the troubles he experienced during the journey in the first series, writes his impressions of Paris under the heading of the Passenger Book. These writings, which started on May 14, 1947 and ended on June 29, 1947, are 11 in number. In these writings, taxis and porters in Paris, subways, trade and black market in the subway, food and beverage issues in Paris, restaurants are emphasized. The writings, in which sections from the daily life of Paris and the hustle and bustle of people are conveyed, are important in that they contain the observations of a Turkish writer about Paris life in the 1940s. These articles written by Reşat Nuri Güntekin in series in the Memleket newspaper have not been published in a book before and have not been talked about much. In this paper, the content of Reşat Nuri Güntekin's writings about his travel to Paris and his impressions during his stay will be emphasized.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Numerous extrusion-based 3D printing processes for electronics and bio-applications have been reported in the past decade. However, these direct ink writing (DIW) systems are mostly expensive and complex to build. Here, we report an inexpensive and open-source extrusion-based 3d printer that could be employed for printing functional inks, especially for various electronics and bio fabrication. A low-cost fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer was modified to build the DIW system. An extrusion mechanism was developed with a stepper motor, a lead screw, a syringe-plunger system, and spur gears. The existing FFF heated extruder was replaced by a new extrusion mechanism. The printer was utilized to print thermosetting viscous pre-polymers. A photocurable resin was thickened using fumed silica to induce non-Newtonian shear thinning properties, and it was used for printing experiments. G-code for printing was generated using an open-source slicer software. Different extrusion rates were examined by controlling the extrusion motor rotation and speed. Also, various print parameters were investigated such as travel speed, ink viscosity, and nozzle size. The dimension of the printed geometry was studied with the change of print parameters. The printed structures were photocured using ultraviolet light. The printed geometries before and after curing were compared. To check printability for electronics, a soft pressure-sensitive membrane was 3D printed using the developed system. An acrylate-based monomer was mixed with a photoinitiator, crosslinker, fumed silica, and ionic liquid to prepare the functional ink for sensor fabrication. The printed sensor was tested under different load conditions.

Streszczenie:
Controversies surrounding the restoration and representation of the narrative and memory of Notre-Dame de Paris are not new. The latest debates remind us that the building has been at the centre of conservation controversies since the nineteenth century. But why is Notre-Dame de Paris central to these debates? The answer appears to lie in its function as a mnemonic device for Paris and the French nation. This paper focuses on the four literary pieces published by Victor Hugo in the period between 1823 and 1832 – ‘Le Bande Noir’ (‘The Black Band’), ‘Note sur la Destruction des Monuments en France’ (‘Note on the Destruction of Monuments in France’), ‘Guerre aux Démolisseurs!’ (‘War on the Demolishers!’) and Notre-Dame de Paris (also known as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). Through an analysis of these four texts, the paper will attempt to understand Hugo’s convictions about the role of buildings – especially Notre-Dame de Paris – in establishing the memory of the city and the nation, and how these in turn underpinned his arguments for conservation. Whilst these texts were all written in a period before the development of key contemporary concepts in the psychology and neuroscience of memory, this paper nevertheless uses the concepts of memory, imagination and Mental Time Travel to try to understand the kind of memory work that the Cathedral performs, and that Hugo suggests it performs in his writing. By examining how Hugo’s literature augmented and engaged the reader’s memory and imagination of the past, this paper will explain how Hugo romanticised the idea that the building was a witness to history. The paper ultimately argues that Hugo positioned Notre-Dame de Paris not only as the centrepiece in his own fiction, but as a beacon of memory for Paris and France, and as such the building came to represent Paris, and indeed the nation as a whole.

Streszczenie:
In an international context that has started showing signs of increased instability, the pace of global economic growth seems not to have been significantly affected, at least at the time of writing the present report. Growth forecasts for the global economy for this year are only slightly below those for 2006 (5.2% as against 5.4%). World trade continued to expand faster than GDP growth, while foreign direct investment (FDI) flows made up the ground they lost in 2001-2003, approaching the record values of 2000. Although, toward mid-2007, there was serious disruption in the international financial market, the swift, emphatic reactions of the central banks of the United States and Europe are highly likely to contain the more negative effects of this on the dynamics of the world economy. There was also continuous growth in much of the developing world, particularly China.
