Pełny tekst źródłaENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is an attempt to gain a deeper understanding, from the perspective and experience of male farm workers, of the effects of a transpersonal social work counselling intervention, on a wine farm in the Western Cape, in promoting more socially functional behaviour and reducing violent behaviour, particularly towards their intimate partners. Domestic violence was found by Parenzee and Smythe (2003:47) of the Institute of Criminality to be “pervasive within farming communities” and that responses are less than adequate, no preventative services were being offered and the only structured interventions that were in place, were aimed at improving the livelihoods of women. There is a growing awareness that addressing the high and increasing levels of violence against women in South Africa needs to incorporate working directly with men as recommended, after local studies, by Sonke Gender Justice Network (2009), Boonzaier (2005), Londt (2004) and Abrahams, Jewkes and Laubsher (1999). A recent study concerning the legacy of dependency and powerlessness experienced by farm workers on wine farms in the Western Cape by Falletisch (2008:v) found there to be a need for “further research into accessible, appropriate and sustainable intervention strategies on farms that empower labourers and break the cycles of habitual excessive drinking, social violence and hopelessness on farms.” Transpersonal intervention enables human beings to attain a sense of Self and the consequent accessing of their own inner power, and with that the dissipation of the compulsion to hurt, control or abuse others and themselves says Hollis (1994) and France (2008). Circumstances that are oppressive, disempowering and poverty inducing, as experienced by a large majority of farm labour in South Africa, may be inhibiting to, but should not preclude, self realisation. The researcher, a social work practitioner in private practice on a wine farm in the Western Cape, applied this approach in a counselling intervention with male farm workers, to enable them to, not only reach their own self-defined goals, but also to reduce abusive behaviour such as alcohol abuse and domestic violence. The effects of the intervention from the perspectives of the men as well as their female partners, was explored in order to determine the effectiveness of the intervention, particularly, in reducing intimate partner violence. The goal of the study was thus to gain a deeper understanding, from the perspective and experience of male farm workers, of the effects of a transpersonal social work intervention in promoting more socially functional behaviour and reducing violent behaviour, particularly towards their intimate partners. There is a dearth of services, particularly addressing male workers on farms says Shabodien (2005) and it is hoped that this study may evaluate the effectiveness and potential for further application in practice amongst farm worker communities in South Africa.

Pełny tekst źródłaTransgender people are in society at large and in many different ways more disadvantaged than other groups in society. Simultaneously as the Swedish social services by law are obliged to promote equality in people's living conditions transgender people have a low trust and confidence in the social services. This is due to experiences of being poorly treated by professionals. This study focuses on social service workers in the Swedish social services and has the purpose to examine and illuminate social service worker´s approach to and way of working with clients who are transgender. The data in this study have been collected through ten semi-structured interviews with social service workers in a region in southern Sweden. The data have been analysed by the use of thematic analysis in order to bring forth patterns in the social service worker´s statements. By coding and thematization the thematic analysis generated three themes that this study labels as with the human as the outset, humancompetence in focus and as guideline and the human behind the role as a social service worker. The result of this study was analysed with the help of parts of Butler's queer theory as well as previous research on the field of concern. The common way of entering a meeting with a client is according to the social service worker's themselves to treat all clients in the same way and to attempt to see the human behind the client. In the specific meeting with a client who have a transgender identity it therefore comes down to meeting a human, not a transgender person.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of the study was to examine how transgender people experience the treatment from social services. Previous research shows that experiences of treatment of transgender people by social services are various. Transgender people have experienced lack of understanding and knowledge, misgendering and being called by the false name. Good treatment that transgender people experienced included respect for transgender people’s gender identity and the use of right pronoun. This is a qualitative study based on semi- structured interviews and made through the phone with four persons. The study has been made with inductive method where an analytical framework with different theories and definitions was chosen taking into consideration the data. Treatment as definition was chosen to analyse the results of the study. I have even used the theory of social constructivism- Berger & Luckmann’s sociological theory as well as the definition heteronormativity and the theory on the heterosexual matrix. The theory on the heterosexual matrix is about expectations that everyone is heterosexual and belief that there are only two sexes that are opposites of each other. The study has shown that transgender people’s experiences of treatment by social services are various. Transgender people have experienced lack of understanding. Furthermore, transgender people have experienced that they have not been taken seriously and have been discriminated. The majority of respondents has experienced that they do not fit the heteronorm. Transgender people have also experienced that sexual orientation and gender identity are seen by administrative officials as something social constructed, and therefore not innate, but chosen. The heteronorm and homosexuality have been lifted by transgender people as the reason why administrative officials did not want to help them. Good treatment transgender people have experienced was about equal treatment regardless of gender identity. Transgender people have experienced that administrative officials have shown that they respect and care about them as well as they have been offered help they needed. Conclusion of the study is that treatment experienced by transgender people depends on which attitude administrative officials have towards transgender people as well as on how transgender people define the concept treatment. Experiences of the treatment by social services can vary between different municipalities too.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of this study is to increase knowledge about how young transgender people experience the treatment at youth guidance centers which have a lgbtq-certification. Because in Sweden transgender people have bad experience with the treatment from the staff, especially in health care centers such as the youth guidance center, and even at centers which have a lgbtq-certification. Previous research in, both Sweden and other countries, show that transgender people, in contact with the health care and other social work centers, have experienced discrimination, questioning and lack of knowledge which on these occasions they needed to teach the staff about lgbtq-issues. Because of this kind of bad treatment transgender people have lost trust in health care centers and don’t dare to seek help. These studies have even shown that other transgender people have experienced good treatment when the staff have respected them and accepted their gender identity. This is a qualitative study, based on semi-structured interviews that have been made through the phone with six persons who identify as transgender but have different definitions about their gender identity. They have been in contact with youth guidance centers which have a lgbtq-certification one or several years before this study was done. This study has been made with inductive method where a theory has been chosen from the data. The theory which has been chosen is recognition, which is about when an individual’s identity is being recognized or morally hurt. The conclusion is that young transgender people have different experiences of treatment at the youth guidance centers. Many of them have experienced a good treatment where the staff have shown concern, respect, acceptance and understanding for their gender identity. Some of them have experienced bad treatment where the staff have presumed their gender, misgendering and questioning. Some staff have lack of knowledge in trans-issues but some of them have treated the young transgender people with respect. It seems that the most important thing for transgender people is that the staff treat them with respect, more based upon their values rather than their knowledge.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of this study was to examine how transgender people are experiencing the support from healthcare regarding their sexual health. I wanted to find out if the individuals got offered and/or wished to get support from the healthcare, and what kind of support that could be and how other could affect their sexual health. With the help from ten informants written narratives that I collected via a web survey their experiences are described. I took help from previous research of the subject as well as Judith Butler's theory about sex and gender and a queerphenomenological theory to interpret and understand the informants stories. The results showed that a hetero- and cis-normative treatment characterizes the healthcare from many sides and there is also a lot of ignorance around this population, both in the healthcare, previous research and the practical social work. Among the transgender people there is a great fear, a fear of how they will be treated by the healthcare staff, this comes with the consequences that they refrain from seeking care which can lead to an impaired sexual- and general health.

Pełny tekst źródłaDiscrimination against transgender people is a widespread problem in the labour market. All research results shows that transgender people are exposed to various discriminatory acts in their workplaces. The shortcoming that emerges in Swedish research regarding discrimination in the labour is that it does not explore how the context of the workplace shapes the acts of discrimination. The purpose of this study is therefore to generate knowledge about how the context of the workplace affects the trans people's experiences of discrimination, and what consequences that are generated because of the discrimination. The theory used in this study are Anthony Giddens Theory of structures. Gidden's structuring theory is a theory used to explain the context's influence on the constructions of social systems. The method used to investigate the purpose of this study is nine individual semi-structured interviews and the method for analysis is based on a model inspired by Grounded Theory. The study's empirical evidence shows that transgender people have experiences of direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, and harassment in the workplace. The consequences of being exposed to discrimination are mental and emotional fatigue, as well as financial vulnerability. The conclusion derives the discrimination is constructed the context of the workplace characterized by (1) male-coded norms, (2) smaller size, (3) small diversity and (4) low level of education. A workplace context characterized by these four codes is thus less trans-friendly.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of this study is to explore how professionals, from health and rehabilitation clinics for addiction, talk about sex and sexuality. The study includes health and rehabilitation clinics for only women or only men. In Sweden, mental illness is more prevalent among the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual population than for the heterosexual population. Mental illness increases the risk for alcohol and drug addiction and people within the LGBT community have an increased risk of addiction than the rest of the population, thus it is of relevance to explore norms regarding gender and sexuality in rehabilitation clinics. The empirical material has been collected via ten semi-structured interviews with professionals of health and rehabilitation clinics for addiction. The result indicates that the discourses regarding sex and sexuality still in many ways are heteronormative and it shows among others by the assumptions that the relationships of the clients are heterosexual. It also shows when it is assumed that the clients are cis in the discourse regarding showing the naked body when leaving monitored urine samples. The result illustrates that there could be an insecurity among the professionals when it comes to use the correct pronoun when talking about transsexual people and in which health and rehabilitation clinic a transsexual person can be accepted for treatment. The conclusion indicates that knowledge about the heteronormative privilege could be necessary to enable change of unequal power structures regarding sex and sexuality.

Pełny tekst źródłaA qualitative study based in the documented amongst LGBT-youth in Sweden, where the school has been pointed out as an arena of impact. This study's purpose have been to investigate how comprehensive upper secondary schools choose to concrete the preemptive duties concerning fundamental values, in relation to sexualitet, gender identity and gender expression. Focus has also been on school welfare officers and their attitudes, norms and experiences concerning these duties. The empirism have consisted of one focus group interview with school welfare officers and a study of relevant literature based in a selection of "equal treatment plans". Conclusions have been that heterosexual normativity characterizes the work of the elfare officers concerning these matters, and that the preemptive duties are not experienced as a priority. In reference to transgender this can distincly be seen in the fact that the ground of discrimination "transgender identity and/or expression" does not have an extensive protection in the law of discrimination. Further on an absence of concretization has been revealed, concerning the competence required for schools to be able to work preemptive in a unitary and equivalent manner. An absence of a norm critical perspective and the need for it, as well as that the current investments in this area in not enough, has been the final conclusions of this study.
