Streszczenie:
The demand of energy usage is increasing rapidly and to meet the energy requirements, best possible transmission systems should be adopted to avoid energy losses in our transmission systems. In Pakistan’s WAPDA (Water & Power Development Authority) system, the rapid increase in load and less generation capacity has increased load shedding thought the country. The government has planned to increase the generation capacity but the supply companies are facing line load-ability, environmental constraints, power limitations problems etc. Most of the supply companies prefer to extend the existing electrical networks instead of building new network to reduce financial burdens. In this paper the implementation of the FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) Devices in an electrical network is described. The FACTS devices enhance power transfer capacity of the line without adding new transmission line. These devices also protect the system from overloading in case of any contingency in the electrical network. The control of power flow, reactive power compensation and voltage control are the main capabilities of FACTS devices. This paper describes the impacts of FACTS devices on improving the voltage stability and power handling capability of a transmission line. The proposed methods for the controllable flow of active and reactive power in a transmission line are also elaborated. A simple electrical system is examined to explain the improvement in the constraints of power system using FACTS devices.

Streszczenie:
Automatic clutch engagement control is essential for all kinds of vehicle power transmissions. The controllers for vehicle power transmissions may include model-based or model-free approaches and must provide high transmission efficiency, fast engagement and low jerk. Most vehicle automatic transmissions are using torque converters with transmission efficiencies up to 96%. This paper presents the use of fuzzy logic control for a dry clutch in parallel hybrid electric vehicles. This controller can minimize the loss of power transmission since it can offer a higher transmission efficiency, up to 99%, with faster engagement, lower jerk and, thus, higher driving comfortability with lower cost. Fuzzy logic control is one of the model-free schemes. It can be combined with AI algorithms, neuro networks and virtual reality technologies in future development. Fuzzy logic control can avoid the complex modelling while maintaining the system’s high stability amid uncertainties and imprecise information. Experiments show that fuzzy logic can reduce the clutch slip and vibration. The new system provides 2% faster engagement speed than the torque converter and eliminates 70% of noise and vibration less than the manual transmission clutch.

Abstract Electrical system frequently finds and issue due to unstable nature and power quality because of, in relation to great number of nonlinear charges. So, there is need to limit inside of these difficulties and produce fine voltage quality concerns. The Flexible Alternate Flow Transmission Systems (FACTS) are the framework made out of static gear works for the AC transmission of electrical energy. Unified_Power_Flow Controls (UPFC) are the excellent FACTS tools to attach series and shunt together and it could use for framing Power transmission sensitive and active power. Here in the paper, Unified Power Flow Control (UPFC) used to clear the voltage sink and Surge. Unified Control was developed and engineered using amplifiers and rectifiers. The real and reactive modifications in congruous control orientations at the receiver side. Use of Simulink of MATLAB checks quality of energy in the use of Unified Control.

Streszczenie:
Power flow (PF) control can increase the utilization of the transmission system and connect lower cost generation with load. While PF controllers have demonstrated the ability to realize dynamic PF control for more than 25 years, PF control has been sparsely implemented. This research re-examines PF control in light of the recent development of fractionally-rated PF controllers and the incremental power flow (IPF) control concept. IPF control is the transfer of an incremental quantity of power from a specified source bus to specified destination bus along a specified path without influencing power flows on circuits outside of the path. The objectives of the research are to develop power system operation and planning methods compatible with IPF control, test the technical viability of IPF control, develop transmission planning frameworks leveraging PF and IPF control, develop power system operation and planning tools compatible with PF control, and quantify the impacts of PF and IPF control on multi-decade transmission planning. The results suggest that planning and operation of the power system are feasible with PF controllers and may lead to cost savings. The proposed planning frameworks may incent transmission investment and be compatible with the existing transmission planning process. If the results of the planning tool demonstration scale to the national level, the annual savings in electricity expenditures would be $13 billion per year (2010$). The proposed incremental packetized energy concept may facilitate a reduction in the environmental impact of energy consumption and lead to additional cost savings.

Streszczenie:
Ad hoc wireless networks have emerged as a promising communication scheme to meet the ever growing portability and infrastructureless demand of wireless services. The transmission power level affects signal quality and interference which causes congestion and thus impacts the communication performance. Hence, power control has been the focus of extensive research. In this thesis, we examine the problem of power control in wireless networks, specially in ad hoc wireless networks. Two important types of power control, which are power control with fixed SNIR targets and power control with variable SNIR targets, are discussed in the thesis. We first introduce some important techniques and results involved in the development of power control algorithms and give literature review. A PI power control approach from literature is introduced. Due to lack of stability analysis, we show there are problems in the existing algorithm. We then propose a stable Proportional-integral (PI) power control algorithm. A forgetting factor is adopted to improve the transient performance. Distributed power control algorithms for systems with fixed SNIR targets might diverge when the feasibility condition is not satisfied. Multi-objective optimisation (MO) is adopted to deal with power control with variable SNIR targets. After discussing the existing MO algorithm, we propose a quadratic multiobjective-optimisation (QMO) algorithm where a quadratic objective function and the greedy methodology are adopted for the dynamics. Theoretical and simulation results of convergence of the new algorithms are given. We also provide review of some important power control frameworks which can be used to show convergence of power control algorithms. However, the QMO algorithm does not fall into any existing framework. In order to show convergence of the QMO algorithm, we suggest a new generalised framework in this thesis.

Streszczenie:
The thesis follows the development of an advanced solar photovoltaic power conversion system from first principles. It is divided into five parts. The first section shows the development of a circuit-based simulation model of a photovoltaic (PV) cell within the 'SABER' simulator environment. Although simulation models for photovoltaic cells are available these are usually application specific, mathematically intensive and not suited to the development of power electronics. The model derived within the thesis is a circuit-based model that makes use of a series of current/voltage data sets taken from an actual cell in order to define the relationships between the cell double-exponential model parameters and the environmental parameters of temperature and irradiance. Resulting expressions define a 'black box' model, and the power electronics designer may simply specify values of temperature and irradiance to the model, and the simulated electrical connections to the cell provide the appropriate I/V characteristic. The second section deals with the development of a simulation model of an advanced PVaware DC-DC converter system. This differs from the conventional in that by using an embedded maximum power tracking system within a conventional linear feedback control arrangement it addresses the problem of loads which may not require the level of power available at the maximum power point, but is also able to drive loads which consistently require a maximum power feed such as a grid-coupled inverter. The third section details a low-power implementation of the above system in hardware. This shows the viability of the new, fast embedded maximum power tracking system and also the advantages of the system in terms of speed and response time over conventional systems. The fourth section builds upon the simulation model developed in the second section by adding an inverter allowing AC loads (including a utility) to be driven. The complete system is simulated and a set of results obtained showing that the system is a usable one. The final section describes the construction and analysis of a complete system in hardware (c. 500W) and identifies the suitability of the system to appropriate applications.

Streszczenie:
Research within digital fluid power (DFP) transmissions is receiving an increased attention as an alternative to conventional transmission technologies. The use of DFP displacement machines entails a need for applicable control algorithms. However, the design and analysis of controllers for such digital systems are complicated by its non-smooth behavior. In this paper a control design approach for a digital displacement machine® is proposed and a performance analysis of a wind turbine using a DFP transmission is presented. The performance evaluation is based on a dynamic model of the transmission with a DFP motor, which has been combined with the NREL 5-MW reference wind turbine model. A classical variable speed control strategy for wind speeds below rated is proposed for the turbine, where the pump displacement is fixed and the digital motor displacement is varied for pressure control. The digital motor control strategy consists of a full stroke operation strategy, where a Delta-Sigma pulse density modulator is used to determine the chamber activation sequence. In the LQR-control design approach, the discrete behavior of the motor and Delta-Sigma modulator is described by a discrete linear time invariant model. Using full-field flow wind profiles as input, the design approach and control performance is verified by simulation in the dynamic model of the wind turbine featuring the DFP transmission. Additionally, the performance is compared to that of the conventional NREL reference turbine, transmission and controller.

Streszczenie:
Due to its advantages of good mechanical properties, simple appearance and strong adaptability, the steel box girder is being widely utilized in urban bridges. The noise radiated by steel box girders subjected to vehicle impacts has the characteristics of wide-spectrum, high-magnitude and control difficulty. U-rib stiffened roof, as a part of the steel box girder, directly bears the input load, which is the basis of studying the vibration of the steel box girder. Currently, the investigation on the vibro-acoustic performance of U-rib plates is very limited. With this regard, this paper introduces the concept of Structural Intensity (SI). The SI vector is calculated by the Finite Element (FE) method. The power flow is visualized by the self-programming post-processing code. The global and local vibration energy transmission characters of a U-rib stiffened plate under a harmonic nodal force are analyzed. Further, the influence of plate thickness is investigated. The optimum design is carried out based on the engineering standard dimensions. The research results indicate that increasing the thickness ratio of the U-rib to the baseplate is beneficial to reducing the vibration.

This paper proposes a technology to reduce vehicle surge during towing that utilizes motors and shifting to help ensure comfort in a parallel HEV pickup truck. Hybridization is one way to reduce fuel consumption and help realize carbon neutrality. Parallel HEVs have advantages in the towing, hauling, and high-load operations often carried out by pickup trucks, compared to other HEV systems. Since the engine, motor, torque converter, and transmission are connected in series in a parallel HEV, vehicle surge may occur when the lockup clutch is engaged to enhance fuel efficiency, similar to conventional powertrains. Vehicle surge is a low-frequency vibration phenomenon. In general, the source is torque fluctuation caused by the engine and tires, with amplification provided by first-order torsional driveline resonance, power plant resonance, suspension resonance, and cabin resonance. This vibration is amplified more during towing. Therefore, this paper proposes two surge reduction technologies to help achieve fuel efficiency and surge at the same time during towing. One technology is a gear shift control that avoids engine operating zones where two or more resonance frequencies coincide, which is realized by changing the equivalent inertia via appropriate gear selection. The second technology is an anti-vibration control, which makes effective use of the hybrid system motors by adding motor torque to suppress the relative displacement between the driveline and the tires.
