L'importance de la traduction pour Jorge Luis Borges et la relation qu'il entretient avec cet art constituent un domaine de recherche qui, jusqu'à présent, n'a été que fort peu étudié. Il est un fait cependant que pendant toute sa vie, l'auteur argentin a non seulement beaucoup traduit mais aussi écrit à propos de la traduction et de l'art de traduire, fut traduit lui-même en plusieurs langues et fit de la traduction le thème de base de très nombreux contes. Dans un premier temps, la présente étude met en évidence les vues théoriques et pratiques de Borges sur la traduction telles qu'il les énonce dans ses essais ou lors de divers entretiens. Elle explore ensuite en les comparant les textes traduits par Borges en espagnol et leurs textes sources qui proviennent de trois domaines littéraires, le domaine français, le domaine britannique et le domaine nord-américain. Dans un troisième temps, l'étude s'attache aux derniers travaux de traduction faits par Borges en collaboration avec le traducteur américain Norman Thomas di Giovanni, les versions anglaises de ses propres textes. Elle conclut enfin en démontrant le lien inévitable entre la traduction et le concept borgésien de l'auteur, du texte, et de la littérature, concept que concrétise Γ auto-traduction par la fusion de l'auteur et du traducteur, du texte et de son double.

Arguing that the concept of littérature-monde conceals unequal relations between literary cultures, this article examines the socio-economic contexts of literary translation from and into Breton from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. The value of translation across the corpus of 1025 texts lies primarily in creating intercultural relationships and promoting cultural diversity. Translation into Breton represents a vital defence of a language with dwindling speaker numbers: in the late 1970s it increases dramatically, with littérature de jeunesse spearheading a change in state policy allowing regional languages to be taught in schools. Yet translation can also reinforce an existing power imbalance, highlighting the central role played by French in the linguistic and literary construction of Breton society. Poetry, songs and contes translated from Breton often perpetuate stereotypes of a bardic, oral culture, while nationalist writers reject self-translation into French as capitulation before the dominant culture. Since the 1980s, many have chosen to bypass French by translating into languages such as Welsh, Scottish, Irish or Catalan, creating a network of minority literatures. Since the market for Breton translation is so small, however, such texts serve as valuable identity markers, a symbolic, affective force articulating a quest for socio-political legitimacy via literature.

Malgré l’intérêt qui ne cesse de croître en Corée pour la traductologie, l’une de ses sousdisciplines, la critique de la traduction, en est encore à ses balbutiements. Pour garantir la qualité de la traduction dans une société donnée, il est essentiel que cette société puisse faire appel à une solide tradition de critique de la traduction. Cet article propose donc un modèle à la fois complet et systématique pour assurer un bon niveau d’évaluation des traductions et, par extension, un modèle de critique de la traduction puisant dans les riches perspectives offertes par la traductologie. La première partie consiste en un résumé de l’état actuel des recherches dans le domaine de la critique de la traduction en Corée, suivi d’une analyse des écueils qui guettent chaque filière adoptée en critique de la traduction. Ensuite, trois textes sont analysés afin de montrer la nécessité d’incorporer les perspectives offertes par la traductologie dans la critique de la traduction. En conclusion, on appelle les chercheurs en traductologie à participer de façon plus active aussi bien au développement de modèles qu’à la pratique dans le domaine de la critique de la traduction.

L'article, dont le contenu repose sur l'expérience personnelle de son auteur, explique comment les professionnels du commerce et les traducteurs contribuent à la traduction de documents anglais vers l'arabe. Un important matériel permet de démontrer que la contribution des professionnels est particulièrement importante dans le domaine des équivalences, tandis que celle des traducteurs consiste essentiellement à produire un document qui présente les éléments lexicolo-giques, grammaticaux et stylistiques appropriés. En outre, les traducteurs peuvent également aider les professionnels du commerce au niveau du choix d'équivalents arabes pour de nouveaux termes commerciaux anglais, en utilisant leur connaissance de l'arabe et les lignes de conduite que proposent les organisations linguistiques concernées.

Tout bien considéré, on ne peut que s'étonner de la disproportion entre l'importance évidente du phénomène de la traduction dans les mass-media audio-visuels (importance qui peut être définie en termes à la fois quantitatifs et qualitatifs) d'une part, et l'attention minimale que la science de la traduction y a accordée d'autre part. Bien qu'il y ait bon nombre de publications à ce sujet, la majorité d'entre elles sont d'orientation purement technique; en outre, leur teneur est souvent préscriptive plutôt que descriptive. En passant, cet article traite des causes de cette disproportion remarquable, mais avant tout nous avons l'intention d'indiquer de quelle façon la lacune pourrait être comblée. Le modèle que nous proposons est basé sur des schèmes de recherche dont l'utilité a amplement été établie dans le domaine de la traduction littéraire. En suivant Gideon Toury, nous présumons qu'il faut distinguer plusieurs niveaux de relations traductionnelles. Ainsi, la pratique de la traduction dans le domaine du film et de la télévision à l'intérieur d'une situation socioculturelle donnée (niveau de la performance) repose sur des choix faits parmi un ensemble d'alternatives assez vaste (niveau de la compétence); cette sélection est gouvernée par le niveau intermédiaire des normes. Les chercheurs de la traduction audiovisuelle devront se rendre compte de ces distinctions. Parmi leurs tâches les plus immédiates, nous comptons: - l'élaboratio n d'un modèle de compétence, c'est-à-dire, d'une théorie de la traduction audiovisuelle qui soit exempte de toute immixtion normative et qui soit fondée sur des disciplines diverses (sémiotique du film, théorie de la traduction, etc.); notre article essaye de jeter les bases d'une telle théorie; - l'analyse systématique et impartiale de la réalité historique des traductions afin de découvrir les mécanismes normatifs qui ont orienté les stratégies des traducteurs; à ce dessein, nous proposons un inventaire comprenant ces paramètres dont la pertinence nous semble fort probable.

Dans un monde dominé par l’économie du marché, les actualités sont un produit (Allan 2004 & 2006) et les audiences accèdent immédiatement aux actualités partout dans le monde. La CCN et BBCWorld ont joué un rôle clé dans le domaine de l’information, souvent dans une optique anglophone. Afin de contrebalancer cette prédominance des médias anglophones, un conglomérat européen a mis en place Euronews en 1993. Notre étude s’intéresse au au site internet Euronews qui diffuse les nouvelles en huit langues et analyse l’élaboration d’une perspective européenne en s’appuyant sur le concept des narratifs (Baker 2006, Somers 1992 et 1997, Somers & Gibson 1994), et en particulier sur le concept des « narratifs publics ». Notre étude a recours à la progression thème-rhème (Gerzymisch-Arbogast, Kunold & Rothfuß-Bastian 2006) et au modèle de Kress & Leewen (1999) pour l’analyse du texte visuel et porte sur quatre-vingt cinq dépêches diffusées dans six des huit langues d’Euronews.

ABSTRACT: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly expanded across various fields, impacting society by transforming linguistic and cultural habits in translation and breaking down language barriers. While offering opportunities like instant translations and recognition software, caution is necessary due to AI's limitations, particularly in automatic translation. The evolving interaction between humans and machines creates new frontiers in global connectivity, prompting questions about their roles in translation for the humanities and social sciences. Our analysis explores the current state of AI, its possibilities, and tools, focusing on its role in literary and academic translation. We also delve into the limits and risks of AI, underscoring the vital role of the human translator. The central question revolves around whether AI, especially in automatic translation, can reliably serve the humanities. Our hypothesis asserts that the human translator is crucial, using knowledge and experience to provide authentic translations, with the machine acting as a legitimate complement, tempered by the cultural insight of the human translator. RÉSUMÉ : L'intelligence artificielle (IA) s'est rapidement développée dans divers domaines, impactant la société en transformant les habitudes linguistiques et culturelles en matière de traduction et en éliminant les barrières linguistiques. Les possibilités qu’offre cette intelligence pour la traduction sont énormes. Toutefois, il est important de faire attention, car il s’agit enfin de machines programmées à cet effet. Le recours de plus en plus accru à ces machines de traduction qui évoluent rapidement suscite des interrogations des spécialistes de la traduction quant à la fiabilité et l’important domaine recouvert par ces dernières. D’autres questions émanent également sur leur conséquence et la place à occuper face au traducteur humain. C’est pourquoi notre analyse explore l’état actuel de l’IA, ses possibilités, ses outils et son rôle dans la traduction littéraire et académique. Il sera question, conjointement à cela, de voir les limites et les risques de l’IA, en soulignant le rôle vital du traducteur humain. En somme, la question centrale est de savoir si l’IA, en particulier dans la traduction automatique, peut servir de manière fiable les sciences humaines. Notre hypothèse affirme que l’intervention du traducteur humain dans cette équation est primordiale. Ses connaissances et son expérience seraient essentielles pour fournir des traductions authentiques.

Le Développement Linguistique et la Traduction des Textes Scientifiques Cet article en deux parties aborde le sujet quelque peu délicat de la traduction en langue malaise de textes scientifiques dont la langue de composition originale est l'Anglais. L'Anglais est une langue de communication internationale dans le domaine des sciences, tandis que le Malais n'a pas un tel statut. Pourtant, l'acte de traduire des textes scientifiques dans une langue telle que le Malais suppose l'existence d'un registre scientifique au sein de cette langue d'arrivée, ou, là où ce registre est inexistant, contribue au développement d'un tel registre associé à cette langue. La décision même de traduire un texte scientifique d'une langue comme l'Anglais dans une autre telle que le Malais doit refléter des changements politiques et des changements dans les rapports entre les deux langues, vus comme fonction de l'état de rapports existant entre les deux communautés qui parlent ces deux langues. On fait donc ainsi appel à la notion du contexte de traduction comme domaine d'étude valable afin de traiter des thèmes qui constituent le cadre de la traduction. En raison des caractéristiques et des exigences particulières à la traduction scientifique, qui s'appuie fermement sur la congruité de terminologies dans les deux langues de traduction, nous proposons et appliquons plusieurs concepts utiles, comme la restriction d'intérêt, la cline et l'agglomérat, aussi bien que la congruité, pour résoudre les problèmes spéciaux posés par le développement du langage scientifique, dans lequel la traduction joue un rôle primordial.

A Linguistic Approach to The Analysis, Recognition and Automatic Translation of Administrative and Legal Verbs
Due to globalization and with the advent of the new digital era, economic, social, and mostly administrative sectors are now required to participate in the digitization and automation of data. This will make several tasks that were previously totally performed by humans easier. Hence, in this context, the present study investigated the application of machine translation (MT) in the administrative field. Using a semantic-syntactic approach and the French Verbs (LVF) dictionary by Jean Dubois and Françoise Dubois-Charlier, we analyzed the verbs used in the administration and legal fields. Following this initial theoretical stage, and using the NooJ platform, we deployed the acquired linguistic data for the construction of a French-Arabic machine translation application. To implement this application, we will design formal grammars for the automatic analysis and recognition of the many semantic-syntactic schemes defining this class of verbs, as well as a bilingual dictionary of legal and administrative verbs. The utmost objective of this research work is the achievement of an accurate and trustworthy translation. In the first theoretical part, we will identify the linguistic characteristics of the different verbs in the administrative and legal fields. At this first level of our approach, we will examine the syntactic constructions of these verbs and then, we will try to delimit the patterns or the distinctive semantic-syntactic schemes of the verbs used in a very specific discourse, which is the administrative discourse. In the second stage of automatic processing, we will try to create a computer process which can:
• Automatically analyze and recognize administrative verbs using the NooJ platform. • Properly translate the verbs studied in Arabic. For the creation of this MT process, the interest of which mainly concerns administrative documents, for social (divorce, inheritance, etc.) and even economic reasons, we will: a/ Integrate legal and administrative verbs into a bilingual French-Arabic electronic dictionary, describing them according to NooJ operators: inflection, conjugation, derivation and syntax operators, etc. In this step, we created: • Paraderivational.nof derivational paradigms. • “paraflexion.nof” bending paradigms. • “paradigmflexionnel.nof” conjugation paradigms • The syntactic formalization where we rewrote the syntactic schemes of the LVF. • The translation of each verbal entry into Arabic. b/ Schematize the semantic-syntactic patterns by the formal grammars of NooJ, to automatically recognize the legal verbs used in an administrative corpus. The formal grammars used are called syntactic disambiguation grammars (Silberztein, Max 2015). In this phase, we produced disambiguation grammars that allowed us to analyze only the requested syntactic constructions. The disambiguation grammar is necessary and important, not only for the automatic analysis and recognition of the correct syntactic constructions, but also for producing a correct and reliable translation. c/ Create an automatic translation grammar that will allow us to obtain a suitable, reliable translation, which will respect the standards of the target language: Arabic. d/ Find solutions for the disambiguation of polysemic predicates using Gaston Gross's "object class" theory which allowed us to refine the recognition grammars and subsequently obtain encouraging results, where the verbs polysemous are suitably translated into Arabic. The originality of this study emanates from the fact that it provides, not only a linguistic description of the verbs of the administrative and legal domain, but especially of the integration of the various data in the NooJ software, in order to facilitate the treatment and the automatic translations of the two languages in question.

Les directives européennes constituent une ressource d'une grande valeur pour la traduction et la terminologie, car elles fournissent des milliers de textes à partir desquels peuvent être construits des corpus, des mémoires de traduction, etc. Concrètement, si nous combinons les connaissances contenues dans les directives avec l'ingénierie ontologique, nous pouvons obtenir des ressources terminologiques fondées sur des ontologies, qui peuvent devenir une source précieuse de documentation conceptuelle et terminologique pour le traducteur. Pour vérifier notre hypothèse, cet article montre comment une ontologie a été construite sur le domaine du voyage à forfait. Pour cela, nous avons utilisé la méthodologie methontology (Gômez-Pérez étal., 2004). Nous envisageons également la possibilité d'utiliser l'approche de Termontographie (Temmerman et Kerremans, 2003).

Abstract In recent years there has been an increasing interest among translation scholars and practitioners alike in promoting translation professionalism and hence winning recognition for translation studies as an independent discipline. Many have convincingly and justly argued for the existence of a hardcore subject-matter knowledge for translation studies and have stressed the importance of this knowledge in the development of the students’ translational competence. Unfortunately, in this attempt, the importance of language competence and thus language training is unduly played down. This article examines this issue by looking at translator training in Hong Kong. It argues that the assumption of students L1 and L2 competence being adequate to study translation immediately upon entering translation programs is unfounded and might be at least partially responsible for students’ slow improvement in their translational compe-tence throughout the program. Key issues for strengthening language training for transla-tion students are also highlighted in this paper. Résumé Au cours des dernières années, il y a eu un intérêt accru parmi les professeurs de traduction et les traducteurs tendant à promouvoir le professionnalisme de la traduction, et donc obtenir la reconnaissance des études de traduction comme discipline indépendante. Avec conviction et raisonnablement, beaucoup ont présenté l’argument d’une connaissance approfondie dún domaine de base pour les études de traduction et ont souligné l’importance de cette connaissance dans le développement de la compétence traductionnelle des étudiants. Malheureusement, lors de cette tentative, l’importance de la compétence linguistique, et donc de la formation linguistique est minimisée à mauvais escient. Cet article examine cette question en étudiant la formation des traducteurs à Hong Kong. Son argument est que supposer une compétence suffisante des étudiants L1 et L2 pour étudier la traduction, dès leur entrée dans des programmes de traduction, n’est pas fondé et serait, au moins, partiellement responsable de la lenteur de leur progrès dans leur compétence translationnelle pendant leur programme dtudes. Les questions essentielles destinées à renforcer la formation linguistique pour les étudiants en traduction sont aussi soulignées dans cet article.

Abstract The paper begins with an observation of the paradoxical status of Chinese as a lesstranslated source language but a much-translated target language, and that of Chinese translation studies as a much studied subject in China but a little-noted branch of translation studies in the world. It then analyzes the implications of the two current conceptions of Chinese translation studies: either (1) as a self-contained system of "translation studies in China", with China construed as a geopolitical body; or (2) as an open system of "Chinese language/culture-related translation studies", with the Chinese as a nation, a linguistic and cultural entity in an anthropological sense. It points out that the fi rst, exclusive conception has for too long kept Chinese translation studies from advancing a positive engagement with translation studies in other traditions, encouraging polarization of Chinese and non-Chinese translation studies into two opposite systems; while the second, inclusive conception relates the discipline more closely to other fields of Chinese-related academic study in the world, as well as translation studies in other languages/cultures. As such, Chinese translation studies, alongside an "applied" parallel which is more language-specific and practice-oriented, represents a linguistically medium- and culturally area-restricted branch of Partial Translation Studies under Pure Translation Studies. To substantiate its argument, the paper shows how the two conceptions may have infl uenced the interpretation of the time-honoured tenet of faithfulness-accessibility-elegance in Chinese translation studies for its conceptual sensibility and explanatory power. Résumé L’article commence par souligner le statut paradoxal du chinois, qui est une languesource moins traduite mais une langue-cible frequemment traduite, et dont les etudes de traduction chinoises constituent un sujet frequemment etudie en Chine mais une section peu cotee de la traductologie dans le monde. Il analyse ensuite les implications des deux conceptions actuelles de la traductologie chinoise : soit (1) un systeme independant de traductologie en Chine., la Chine etant consideree comme un organe geopolitique ; soit (2) un systeme ouvert d’etudes de traduction liees a la langue et a la culture chinoises., les Chinois etant une nation, une entite linguistique et culturelle au sens anthropologique du terme. Il montre que la premiere conception exclusive a trop longtemps empeche la traductologie chinoise d’avancer un engagement positif avec les etudes de traduction dans d’autres traditions, en encourageant la polarisation de la traductologie chinoise et nonchinoise en deux systemes opposes ; tandis que la seconde conception inclusive rapproche la discipline plus etroitement d’autres domaines d’etudes academiques liees au chinois dans le monde, ainsi que des autres etudes de traduction dans d’autres langues et cultures. En tant que telle, la traductologie chinoise, a cote d’un parallele .applique. qui est plus specifique a la langue et oriente vers la pratique, represente un moyen linguistique et une branche culturellement limitee a un domaine d’etudes partielles de traduction dans les etudes de traduction pures. Pour etayer son argument, l’article montre comment les deux conceptions peuvent avoir influence l’interpretation du principe, consacre par l’usage, de la fidelite — accessibilite — elegance dans la traductologie chinoise pour sa sensibilite conceptuelle et son pouvoir explicatif.

Abstract Poetry in general and lyric poetry in particular are perhaps the most difficult types of texts to be rendered from one language into another without much change in meaning and structure. That is why folkloric songs could be considered as toilsome to be rendered, because they are often culture-bound. Moreover, they have a highly complicated sign structure which plays an important role in transmitting culture. It may be helpful and useful to investigate a number of difficulties in translating these rhymed texts which reflect certain aspects of culture (social, political and ecological, among others). Despite the dearth of references, the authors have succeeded in obtaining the necessary data of translating these folkloric songs. They aim to reach modest findings which could be beneficial to students of translation. In this paper, it may be useful to introduce some ideas about the nature of translation and translatability as well as literary translation with special reference to the semantic vs. communicative translation. It also aims to shed light on the translatability of some Jordanian folkloric songs. This study partly provides examples of the authors' translations from Arabic into English, which are only attempts of translating these literary texts. The translations are meant only for the aim of comparison or to support data. Some conclusions and recommendations about the translatability of folkloric songs are reached. Résumé La poésie en général et la poésie lyrique en particulier sont probablement les types de textes les plus difficiles à reproduire d'une langue dans une autre sans introduction de changement de signification ou de structure. C'est la rasion pour laquelle les chants folkloriques, généralement liés à la culture sont difficiles à traduire. De plus, la structure des signes est éminemment compliquée et joue un rôle important au niveau de la transmission de la teneur culturelle. Il peut donc être intéressant et utile d'analyser un certain nombre de difficultés qui surgissent lors de la traduction de ces textes rythmés qui reflètent certains aspects culturels (sociaux, politiques et écologiques, entres autres). En dépit du manque de références, les auteurs sont parvenus à obtenir les informations nécessaires à la traduction de ces chants folkloriques. Leur but est d'obtenir certains indications susceptibles d'être précieuses pour les étudiants en traduction. Dans le présent article, les auteurs ont estimé qu'il pouvait être utile d'introduire certains notions concernant la nature de la traduction et de la traductibilité mais aussi de la traduction littéraire, en particulier dans le domaine de l'opposition traduction sémantique — traduction communicative. Les auteurs souhaitent aussi aborder la traductibilité de certains chants folkloriques jordaniens, et ce à l'aide d'exemples de traductions arabe-anglais réalisées par les auteurs mais qui ne sont d'après ces derniers que des essais de traduction de ces textes littéraires. Ces traductions visent uniquement à comparer les informations ou à fournir des indications utiles. Ce faisant ils sont parvenus à formuler un certain nombre de conclusions et de recommendations concernant la traductibilité des chants folkloriques.

Abstract In the last few years considerable attention has been paid to the system of negation; nevertheless, the study of negative polarity has not been conducted from the perspective of translation. This paper concentrates on some of the problems that the translation of some English negatives may pose for Spanish speakers. It starts by showing the ambiguity of some negative constructions in English as well as the contradictions that may be detected between the syntactic, semantic and even pragmatic levels of the language in regard to polarity. It then goes on to examine the scope of negation in both English and Spanish as well as its implications in the field of translation. This section also includes a careful analysis of the negation of English auxiliaries and of the so called transferred or raised negative constructions. Part three is concerned with double negation in both standard and non-standard English while four deals with the definition and anticipated difficulties in the translation of negative polarity idioms (NPIDs). The paper concludes by making a series of considerations on the realm of translation in light of the issues discussed before. Questions for further study in the area of the translation of negatives are also briefly mentioned. Résumé Ces dernières années, on a prêté une grande attention au système de la négation; cependant, l'étude de la polarité négative n'a pas été abordée du point de vue de la traduction. Notre travail concerne quelques problèmes posés aux hispanophones par la traduction de certaines constructions négatives anglaises. Nous voulons démontrer en premier lieu l'ambiguïté de quelques constructions négatives en anglais ainsi que les contradictions qu'on peut déceler entre les niveaux syntactique, sémantique et même pragmatique du langage en ce qui concerne la polarité. Ensuite, nous examinons le domaine de la négation en anglais et en espagnol, ainsi que ses implications pour la traduction. Cette section inclut l'analyse détaillée de la négation des auxiliaires anglais et des négations dites transférées. Dans la troisième partie, nous nous occupons de la double négation en anglais standard et sous-standard, et dans la dernière nous abordons la définition des modismes à polarité négative (MPNs) et les difficultés qui se présentent lors de leur traduction. Notre travail se termine par une série de considérations sur la traduction à la lumière des questions étudiées antérieurement. Nous abordons aussi brièvement d'autres aspects qui mériteraient une étude postérieure dans le cadre des constructions négatives.

This research is briefly concerned with the field of machine translation of the Noble Qur’an. The main objective of this research is to emphasize the need for the human touch in the translation process, in order to remain faithful to the original semantic, religious, and cultural charge of the Qur’anic text. To measure the accuracy, fluency, and cultural sensitivity of machine translations, we used a mixed approach, combining quantitative content analysis and qualitative thematic analysis. Globally, the results of this research support the use of a hybrid approach combining machine translation with human editing and revision because even though machine translation has improved considerably over the last few decades, it still faces many difficulties in correctly capturing the nuanced meanings, cultural context and the wonderful literary and aesthetic style of the original Arabic-language Qur’anic text. Résumé Cette recherche s’inscrit sommairement dans le domaine de la traduction automatique du saint Coran. L’objectif majeur assigné à cette recherche est d’insister sur la nécessité de l’intervention de la touche humaine dans le processus de traduction afin de rester fidèle à la charge sémantique, religieuse et culturelle originales du texte coranique. Pour mesurer la précision, la fluidité et la sensibilité culturelle des traductions automatiques, nous avons fait appel à une approche mixte, combinant l'analyse quantitative du contenu et l'analyse thématique qualitative. Dans l’ensemble, les résultats de cette recherche favorisent le recours à une approche hybride combinant ainsi la traduction automatique et l’édition et la révision humaine car si la traduction automatique s'est considérablement améliorée au cours des dernières décennies, elle reste confrontée à des difficultés pour saisir correctement les significations nuancées, le contexte culturel et le merveilleux style littéraire et esthétique du texte coranique original en langue arabe.

Résumé Cet article rend compte des résultats d'une expérience comparant deux traductions effectuées par des apprentis traducteurs. La première traduction a été faite à l'aide d'outils conventionnels, alors que pour la seconde l'outil consistait en un corpus monolingue spécialisé. Les résultats montrent que les traductions réalisées à l'aide du corpus sont de meilleure qualité en ce qui a trait à la compréhension du domaine, à la sélection des termes et à l'utilisation d'expressions idiomatiques. L'auteur observe que, bien qu'elle n'ait pu noter d'amélioration côté grammaire et registre, l'utilisation du corpus ne peut pas non plus être associée à une baisse de la qualité du travail.

Abstract This study aims at evaluating the translation of dubbed children's animated pictures shown on Jordan Television and other Arab televisions in terms of accuracy and faithfulness to the original text. In an attempt to achieve this goal, the researchers have studies the translations of (56) episodes of Arabic versions of five children's animated pictures. Upon close examination of the translated material, it has been found that most of the translators have given erroneous renderings of some portions of the original texts, thus distorting the message conveyed in the target language text and, consequently, affecting, in a direct way, the educational level of the children. The researchers analyse and categorise some erroneously translated words, phrases and sentences observed in the corpus of the study. They also try to attribute the errors to their possible causes. Finally, the researchers suggest alternative, supposedly more appropriate translations of the source language utterances. The study concludes with some recommendations which would hopefully enhance the process of translating dubbed children's animated pictures in general and improve the performance of Arab translators working in the field of English-Arabic dubbing. Résumé Le but de l'étude est d'évaluer la traduction de films animés doublés pour enfants, diffusés à la télévision jordanienne et d'autres télévisions arabes en termes de précision et de concordance avec le texte original. Dans un effort d'arriver à cette fin, les chercheurs ont étudié les traductions de 56 épisodes des versions arabes de cinq films animés pour enfants. Suite à un examen approfondi du matérial traduit, on a trouvé que la plupart des traducteurs ont donné une version erronée de certaines parties des textes originaux déformant ainsi le message transmis dans la lnague cible et, par conséquent, ayant une influence directe sur le niveau d'instruction de l'enfant. Dans le corpus de l'étude, les chercheurs analysent et categorisent certains mots, locutions et phrases observés et traduits erronément. Ils font également un effort pour attribuer les erreurs à leurs causes probables. Enfin, les chercheurs suggèrent une alternative et, par supposition, mieux appropriée des propos de la langue de départ. L'étude termine avec quelques recommandations qu'on espère, relèverait en général le processus de la traduction de films animés doublés pour enfants et améliorerait la tāche des traducteurs arabes spécialisés dans le domaine du doublage anglais-arabe.

Neural machine translation (NMT) systems are usually trained on clean parallel data. They can perform very well for translating clean in-domain texts. However, as demonstrated by previous work, the translation quality significantly worsens when translating noisy texts, such as user-generated texts (UGT) from online social media. Given the lack of parallel data of UGT that can be used to train or adapt NMT systems, we synthesize parallel data of UGT, exploiting monolingual data of UGT through crosslingual language model pre-training and zero-shot NMT systems. This paper presents two different but complementary approaches: One alters given clean parallel data into UGT-like parallel data whereas the other generates translations from monolingual data of UGT. On the MTNT translation tasks, we show that our synthesized parallel data can lead to better NMT systems for UGT while making them more robust in translating texts from various domains and styles.

Abstract This paper describes the development of a new range of bilingual dictionaries which are based on translating the explanations in monolingual Cobuild dictionaries2 into the user's mother tongue. These dictionaries have been designed by Cobuild's Editor-in-Chief, John Sinclair, primarily to address the needs of language learners. The philosophy which underlies the design reveals important assumptions about the nature and limits of equivalence.3 Moreover, the development and implementation of the editorial policies have raised a number of issues which are of immediate concern to scholars of translation and to applied linguists. These include, for example, the nature and boundaries of the units of language and hence of the unit of translation, as well as the practical question of handling new genres in translation. This paper concentrates on the treatment of equivalence in the range of dictionaries under discussion. RÉSUMÉ Le présent article décrit une nouvelle série de dictionnaires bilingues basés sur la traduction, vers d'autres langues, de dictionnaires anglais unilingues. Ces dictionnaires s'adressent aux étudiants en langues dont les connaissances linguistiques sont inférieures au niveau intermédiaire. Cependant, les dictionnaires en soi sont faits par des traducteurs professionnels ou réalisés sous le contrôle de ces derniers. C'est la raison pour laquelle leur contenu représente de véritables exercices de traduction dont chacun a pour but d'aborder un domaine différent de la communication. De plus, la conception de ces dictionnaires est basée sur une notion d'équivalence, plus sophistiquée que celle que l'on trouve dans les dictionnaires bilingues classiques. Les équivalences, aussi bien au niveau des explications/définitions qu'à celui des exemples, sont souvent abordées dans le détail. L'article fait également remarquer que cette série de dictionnaires pourra très bien être utilisée dans les écoles de traduction.

ABSTRACT: No field today can do without the assistance of new technologies. Information technology invades all sciences to the great benefit of researchers. While these tools tend to facilitate analyses, they are not without flaws. The use of artificial intelligence in linguistic studies is very recent and struggles to establish itself in methodological practices. Although partially mastered, its use is becoming increasingly frequent. Nowadays, almost all researchers occasionally or regularly resort to machine translation through Google Translate. This website provides translations of texts in several different languages. Our interest through this writing is to review the linguistic constraints and particularities of Tamazight that could affect the reliability of translations and thus assess the possibility of introducing Tamazight among the official languages of Google Translate. Our objective is to suggest preliminary alternatives by leveraging the shortcomings observed in translations into other languages. We aim to highlight translation situations that escape artificial intelligence and require intervention and reformulation of the source or target sentence. Furthermore, we will present the advantages of machine translation in the language learning process compared to other traditional learning systems. RÉSUMÉ : Aucun domaine ne peut de nos jours se passer de l’assistance des nouvelles technologies. L’informatique envahit toutes les sciences au grand intérêt du chercheur. Si ces outils ont tendance à faciliter les analyses, elles ne sont pas sans failles. L’utilisation de l’intelligence artificielle dans les études linguistiques est très récente et peine à s’installer dans les pratiques méthodologiques. Bien que partiellement maitrisée, son utilisation devient de plus en plus fréquente. De nos jours, presque tous les chercheurs ont occasionnellement ou régulièrement recours à la traduction automatique à travers Google traduction. Ce site web fournit des traductions de textes dans plusieurs langues différentes. Notre intérêt à travers cet écrit est de passer en revue les contraintes et particularités linguistiques du tamazight qui pourraient perturber la fiabilité des traductions et ainsi statuer sur l’éventualité de l’introduction de Tamazight parmi les langues officielles de Google translate. Notre objectif est de suggérer des alternatives en amant en se servant des insuffisances constatées à travers les traductions dans les autres langues. Nous visons à mettre en évidence les situations de traduction échappant à l’intelligence artificielle et nécessitant une intervention et une reformulation de la phrase source ou cible. Par ailleurs, nous exposerons les avantages de la traduction automatique dans le processus d’apprentissage des langues en l’opposant aux autres systèmes d’apprentissage classiques.

La référence explicite et implicite dans la traduction de l'arabe en anglais Le terme 'référence' désigne la relation qui existe entre une expression nominale et un individu ou un objet du monde extérieur, réel ou fictif. Cette relation est créée par rénonciation de l'expression nominale au sein d'une phrase à une occasion donnée. Une expression (et donc sa référence) est dite explicite dans la mesure où elle répond à deux conditions: (1°) elle doit être détaillée, claire et fournir une information qui permettra d'identifier le référant visé; (2°) la référence d'une expression doit être directe. Toute référence indirecte constitue une référence de 'deuxième rang' et est donc implicite. Le caractère explicite des expressions de référence se présente toutefois comme une gamme allant des expressions les plus explicites que sont les noms propres, aux moins explicites, les pronoms, en passant par les propositions contenant un nom commun. Entre la première et la dernière catégorie d'expressions de référence — les noms propres et les propositions nominales — on distingue toute une série de sous-catégories dont le caractère explicite est plus ou moins marqué. Dans le présent article, l'auteur défend l'hypothèse selon laquelle la référence explicite-implicite diffère d'une langue à l'autre. Il compare des traductions de textes équivalents en arabe et en anglais et analyse les choix qui s'opèrent au niveau du caractère explicite dont il est question plus haut. Les résultats indiquent que les textes rédigés en arabe et en anglais diffèrent par l'usage qu'ils font de diverses expressions de référence. Abstract In the past 50 years a large number of medieval German texts have appeared in editions which provide translations, mostly in prose, and very often on the pages facing the medieval original. The article begins with a brief overview of this development, and distinguishes between poetic recreations and the more usual functional paraphrases. It then discusses the need for bi-lingual editions and the assumptions which seem to underlie the choice of lay-out. Some exceptions to the use of functional prose are noted. The article examines some of the comments made by the scholars responsible for bilingual texts, in particular comments for their German readers on the perceived difficulties associated with interference, and the rationale which seems to justify the almost universal choice of prose for translations of verse. It is argued that the form of medieval verse is just as much a part of the culture as the content, and that readers should perhaps not be given the impression that they are better able to appreciate the sense of the original through a prose paraphrase. Sommaire Durant les cinquante dernières années, un grand nombre de textes allemands médiévaux ont paru en traduction, essentiellement en prose, et très souvent sous la forme de textes bilingues. La présente étude commence par une présentation de ce phénomène, et met l'accent sur ce qui peut séparer une traduction poétique de la traduction paraphrasée qui est habituelle en ce domaine. Elle souligne ensuite l'intérêt de traductions bilingues et de ce qui sous-tend leur mise en page, notant le cas échéant les exceptions ä la règle commune de traduction en prose. L'étude considère ensuite certains des commentaires avancés par les chercheurs produisant des éditions bilingues pour leurs lecteurs allemands, en particulier en ce qui concerne les difficultés relevant des interférences et les arguments qui président au choix de la prose pour traduire des vers. ABSTRACT: In this article, we have discussed the essence of legal translation and the phraseology of its text. We worked to clarify its characteristics by focusing on the problems of its translation. The lines of thought proposed in this study lead us to say that legal translation cannot be reduced to a simple question of terminology but goes beyond the word. For reasons of space economy, we were unable to expose the whole range of derived problems, thus we focused on that of legal discourse, which links the legal field to that of translation. In fact, the law only exists and materializes through its language. As a result, training in the problems of legal discourse and its phraseology is an essential factor in the qualification of the translator who turns to the world of legal translation.
RESUME : Nous avons abordé dans cet article l’essence de la traduction juridique et la phraséologie de son texte, nous avons œuvré à clarifier ses caractéristiques en nous arrêtons aux problèmes de sa traduction. Les pistes de réflexions proposées dans cette étude, nous amènent à dire que la traduction juridique ne peut être résumée à une simple question de terminologie mais va au-delà du mot. Pour des raisons d’économie d’espace, nous n’avons pu exposer tout l’éventail des problématiques dérivées et nous nous sommes concentrés sur celle du discours juridique qui lie le domaine juridique à celui de la traduction car la loi n’existe et ne se matérialise qu’à travers sa langue. Il en résulte qu’une formation qui aborde la problématique du discours juridique et de sa phraséologie est un facteur essentiel à la qualification du traducteur qui s’oriente vers l’univers de la traduction juridique.

Selon Jespersen, les "liaisons verbales" se réfèrent à des substantifs abstraits tels que "arrivée, admiration". Ces substantifs sont dérivés de verbes et ont donc des propriétés de verbe. La grammaire transformationnelle de Chomsky révèle qu'en tant que sujet, objet et adverbe, leurs formes logiques semblent être celles d'attributs, mais qu'en réalité, elles sont tranformées dans la structure profonde à partir des sujets, objets et adverbes, et qu'elles doivent par conséquent être traitées en tant que tels par le traducteur. En anglais, l'adverbialisation logique des "liaisons verbales" est un phénomène qui couvre un domaine étendu et est à l'origine de difficultés au moment de traduire. A la lumière de la théorie de Jespersen sur les mots-liaisons verbales et de la grammaire transformationnelle de Chomsky, l'auteur de l'article propose un moyen de traiter ce phénomène dans les traductions de l'anglais en chinois. Cette approche se situe à trois niveaux: les adverbes, les propositions adverbiales et les clauses adverbiales.

The case study examined in depth is a comparison analysis of the classical English novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, which has been translated into Chinese seven times, with seven versions preserving the novel form of the original. The present study will elaborate on the differences between two Chinese versions of Tess of the D’Urbervilles, one is Zhang Guruo’s version translated in 1934, and the other is Sun Zhili’s version translated in 1999, with regard to language style, literature, concept, acceptance of context, as well as the different translation strategies translators adopted in different historical, social and cultural contexts. The study also examines the special role played in the process by the two translations. The present paper thus contributes both to translation studies and to literary theory. The comparison is carried out by answering the following questions: – What are the social cultural impacts on the first translation and the retranslation? – What kind of selection tendencies do the two translators have? – What are the specific translation strategies adopted by the translators in the field of social customs, history and religion, literature and art, Bible and other allusions, literature and historical figures? Why? Résumé L’etude de cas examinee en detail est une analyse comparative du roman anglais classique Tess of the D’Ubervilles de Thomas Hardy, qui a ete traduit sept fois en chinois, avec sept versions preservant la forme originale du roman. Cette etude exposera dans le detail les differences entre deux versions chinoises de Tess of the D’ Ubervilles, l’une etant la version de Zhang Guro traduite en 1934 et l’autre celle de Sun Zhili traduite en 1999, en ce qui concerne le style de la langue, la litterature, le concept, l’acceptation du contexte, ainsi que les differentes strategies de traduction que les traducteurs ont adoptees dans differents contextes historiques, sociaux et culturels. L’etude examine egalement le role special joue dans le processus par les deux traductions. Par consequent, cet article contribue tant a la traductologie qu’ a la theorie litteraire. La comparaison est effectuee en repondant aux questions suivantes : – Quels sont les impacts socio-culturels sur la premiere traduction et la retraduction ? – Quel type de tendances de selection les deux traducteurs ont-ils ? – Quelles sont les strategies de traduction specifiques, adoptees par les traducteurs dans le domaine des coutumes sociales, de l’histoire et de la religion, de la litterature et de l’art, de la bible et d’autres allusions, des personnages litteraires et historiques ? Financial Text Translation
Nowadays, specialized translation has acquired a great importance in different fields, particularly in the domain of affairs and finance. The domains covered by financial translation are various. They range from simple economic research to the most complex accounting studies. It is thus necessary for this translation to have a deep knowledge of the issue to be tackled, and a total mastery of the mechanisms of finance. Translating the financial terminology is the greatest obstacle that a translator meets in his work. This is due to its technical nature as well as the different neologisms regularly used in the language of finance. The most important element of this piece of work is the importance of research in both documentation and terminology. If these two elements are properly carried out, they allow the translator to translate any specialized text in any field without necessarily being a specialist in the domain in question. Nevertheless, he must usually carry out continuous research and have a universal knowledge. He also has to enrich and update his databases and terminological files to make of his translation a driving force for the coming translations.

Neural machine translation (NMT) models have achieved state-of-the-art translation quality with a large quantity of parallel corpora available. However, their performance suffers significantly when it comes to domain-specific translations, in which training data are usually scarce. In this paper, we present a novel NMT model with a new word embedding transition technique for fast domain adaption. We propose to split parameters in the model into two groups: model parameters and meta parameters. The former are used to model the translation while the latter are used to adjust the representational space to generalize the model to different domains. We mimic the domain adaptation of the machine translation model to low-resource domains using multiple translation tasks on different domains. A new training strategy based on meta-learning is developed along with the proposed model to update the model parameters and meta parameters alternately. Experiments on datasets of different domains showed substantial improvements of NMT performances on a limited amount of data.

Les nausées et les vomissements induits par la chimiothérapie (NVIC) nuisent à la qualité de vie tant des adultes que des patients pédiatriques atteints d’un cancer (Dupuis, Milne-Wren, Cassidy et al., 2010; Farrell, Brearley, Pilling et Molassiotic, 2013; Russo, Cinausero, Gerratana et al., 2014; Hinds, Gattuso, Billups et al., 2009; Sommariva, Pongiglione, et Tarricone, 2016). Les vomissements et les haut-le-cœur sont des symptômes qui s’évaluent objectivement, alors que la nausée est subjective et plus difficile à mesurer. En général, l’intensité de la nausée chez les adultes peut être décrite à l’aide d’échelles d’évaluation visuelle analogique ou qualitative. Il existe à cette fin des instruments validés et recommandés par des spécialistes du domaine, comme celui de la Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (en ligne : www.mascc.org) (Hesketh, Gralla, du Bois et Tonato, 2016).

The translation of Chinese medical books is characterized by language, cultural connotation and cognitive domain background, which makes the translators encounter different levels of difficulty in the process of translation and form different translations accordingly. This paper takes the construal theory in cognitive linguistics as a guide, analyzes the important role of four kinds of means of construal in the process of translating Chinese medical books, and analyzes the different English translations of JGL under the construal theory, analyzes that different translations reflect different cognitive mechanisms of the translators, and comes to the conclusion that the translations should maximally reflect the cognitive points of reference of the authors at that time, so as to maximize the translations. It is also concluded that the translation should maximally reflect the author's cognitive reference point so as to maximize the closeness of the translation to the original text, aiming to provide theoretical guidance and reference for the English translation of Chinese medical books.

ChatGPT, an advanced language model by OpenAI, enhances translation with its powerful language generation and understanding. In comparison to traditional human translation, ChatGPT is less costly, time-consuming, and knowledge-constraint, showcasing the substantial value of its application in translation practice. In the context of globalization, forestry translation plays an increasing role in facilitating global forestry development. To meet the growing need for efficient and high-quality translation in the forestry sector, this paper did research on the effectiveness of ChatGPT in the translation of forestry sci-tech texts. Combining quantitative analysis using BLEU and TER scores with qualitative evaluations by domain experts, this study compares the quality of translations produced by ChatGPT with that of the three mainstream machine translation tools in the market—Google Translate, Youdao Translation, and DeepL Translator regarding the translations’ accuracy and readability. The findings reveal that while ChatGPT excels in domain-specific terminology and context-sensitive meanings, it faces challenges in dealing with texts with special sentence structures and making the translations adaptable. By identifying the strengths and limitations of ChatGPT in translating forestry sci-tech texts, this research illustrates that there is great potential for ChatGPT’s application in forestry translation. Additionally, the study provides insights that can guide the development and refinement of machine translation systems to better meet the needs of specialized fields, ultimately facilitating more effective global communication and knowledge sharing.

The paper focuses on English-to-Russian translations of patent applications on the website of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). A comparative analysis of patent applications is performed by using translations made with the help of the WIPO Translate tool and human translators within the framework of the synergetic translation space concept encompassing the domains of the author's intensions, text content and composition, energy, translator, recipient, and the translation acceptability notion. The translation erratology aspects were considered from the point of view of the semantic, referential, and syntactic ambiguity within the domains of content-composition and energy space. In the domain of the author, the intention to convey some technical information is revealed, while its rendering in the content-composition and energy domains depends on whether the translation is made by a person or a machine. Genre- and composition-related specifics have been rendered in both cases while machine translation errors have been proven to result from the semantic, referential, or syntactic ambiguity, and this is when the translated output is generally considered unacceptable by the recipient. The results obtained can be used for editing machine translations of patent documentation, assessing the quality of technical documentation translation that is referred to other specific genre conventions.

This opening essay of the special issue on ‘Narration and Translation’ discusses the overlaps between the fields of narratology and translation studies. The fact that translation scholars have merely skimmed the surface of narratological issues relevant for the study of translation can be understood within the context of early developments in translation studies. The first explicit use of narratological models in this discipline has grown out of unease with the extant focus on the macrostructural level of translations. In recent decades, translation scholars have begun to include narrative approaches in their research. Some conceptualize the translator’s discursive presence by referring to a model of narrative communication, or borrow concepts from narratology in order to analyse observed shifts in literary translations. Outside the domain of literary translation studies, scholars have looked into the way translation can refashion narratives in the real world. Conversely, narrative theories have rarely dealt with translational issues, even though they often rely on translations of literary texts. The issue as a whole wants to enhance the dialogue between narratology and translation studies. Each essay explores aspects of the relation between narration and translation.

Abstract The problem of translatability or untranslatability is closely related to man's understanding of the nature of language, meaning and translation. From the sociosemiotic point of view, "untranslatables" are fundamentally cases of language use wherein the three categories of sociosemiotic meaning carried by a source expression do not coincide with those of a comparable expression in the target language. Three types of untranslatability, referential, pragmatic, and intralingual may be distinguished. On the understanding that the object of translation is the message instead of the carrier of the message, language-specific norms considered untranslatable by some linguists should be excluded from the realm of untranslatables. And since translation is a communicative event involving the use of verbal signs, the chance of untranslatability in practical translating tasks may be minimized if the communicative situation is taken into account. In a larger sense, the problem of translatabiliiy is one of degrees: the higher the linguistic levels the source language signs carry meaning(s) at, the higher the degree of translatability these signs may display; the lower the levels they carry meaning(s) at, the lower the degree of translatability they may register. Résumé Le problème de la traduisibilité ou de la non-traduisibilité est étroitement lié à la compréhension par l'homme de la nature de la langue, de la signification et de la traduction. Du point de vue socio-sémiotique, les "non-traduisibles" sont fondamentalement des cas d'usage de la langue dans lesquels trois catégories de signification socio-sémiotique transmis par une expression source ne coïncident pas avec ceux d'une expression comparable dans la langue cible. On distingue trois types de "non-traduisibles": référentiels, pragmatiques ou interlangues. Etant entendu que l'objet de la traduction est le message et non le vecteur de ce dernier, des normes spécifiques à la langue, considérées "intraduisibles" par certains linguistes, devraient être exclues du domaine des "intraduisibles". Et comme la traduction est un acte de communication impliquant l'usage de signes verbaux, l'éventualité d' "intraduisibles" lors des tâches de traduction pratique peut être réduite lorsque la situation communicative est prise en considération. Dans un sens plus étendu, le problème de "traduisibilité" est une question de niveaux: plus les signes de la langue source transmettent de significations aux niveaux linguistiques les plus élevés, plus ces signes peuvent mettre en évidence le niveau de traduisibilité; au contraire, plus les niveaux qu'ils transmettent sont inférieurs, plus bas est le niveau de traduisibilité qu'ils enregistrent.

<p>With their focus on terms, bilingual dictionaries are important tools for translating texts on economics. The most common type is the multi-field dictionary covering several related subject fields; however, multi-field dictionaries treat one or few fields extensively thereby neglecting other fields in contrast to single-field and sub-field dictionaries. Furthermore, recent research shows that economic translation is not limited to terms so lexicographers who identify and analyse the needs of translators, usage situations and stages in translating economic texts will have a sound basis for designing their lexicographic tools. The function theory allows lexicographers to study these basics so that they can offer translation tools to the domain of economics. Dictionaries should include data about terms, their grammatical properties, and their combinatorial potential as well as language varieties such as British, American and international English to indicate syntactic options and restrictions on language use. Secondly, translators need to know the meaning of domain-specific terms to properly understand the differences in the structure of the domains in the cultures involved. Finally, pragmatic data will tell authors and translators how textual resources are conventionally used and what is textually appropriate in communication within the fi eld of economics. The focus will mainly be on translations between Danish and English.</p>

Cet article se propose de dresser les traits de la période de renaissance des recherches en traduction automatique (TA) après le rapport ALPAC (i.e. Automatic Language Processing Advisory Committee) de 1966 qui recommande leur arrêt. En fait, ce regain d’intérêt commence à se faire ressentir grâce à l’avènement de la traduction indirecte par interlingua ainsi que par transfert. L’approche par interlangue, comme son nom l’indique, joue sur une représentation syntaxique dans une langue intermédiaire et elle bénéficiera des avancées en intelligence artificielle et linguistique computationnelle (ex. : KBMT – Knowledge-based Machine Translation). Quant au mécanisme d’exploitation par transfert, il faut noter que celui-ci engage plusieurs étapes et que Systran est l’un des projets d’envergure qui vont s’en servir. Ces avancées auront un effet positif sur la poursuite des travaux dans le domaine de la TA à partir des années 70-80 et jusqu’à présent.

The image-to-image translation method aims to learn inter-domain mappings from paired/unpaired data. Although this technique has been widely used for visual predication tasks—such as classification and image segmentation—and achieved great results, we still failed to perform flexible translations when attempting to learn different mappings, especially for images containing multiple instances. To tackle this problem, we propose a generative framework DAGAN (Domain-aware Generative Adversarial etwork) that enables domains to learn diverse mapping relationships. We assumed that an image is composed with background and instance domain and then fed them into different translation networks. Lastly, we integrated the translated domains into a complete image with smoothed labels to maintain realism. We examined the instance-aware framework on datasets generated by YOLO and confirmed that this is capable of generating images of equal or better diversity compared to current translation models.

Proverbs are witty, pithy, and epigrammatic expressions. They are idiosyncratic, being based on a specific culture. As cultural translation is difficult, translation of proverbs is not easy. Yet, translation practices on such genre have been appearing. In such a scenario, some such practices are found in the domain of Nepali into English translations. In this background, the present study aims at reviewing the available models for translating proverbs and recommending one, which can be used for translating Nepali proverbs into English. To achieve the objectives, I collected twenty proverbs purposively from Lall (1991) and Sharma (2000), primarily because I could deal only with twenty in a short period and limited space. By way of qualitative analysis and interpretation and by testing Wilson's (2009) model, I have concluded that the model is applicable for the purpose.

The research described in this paper is rooted in the endeavors to combine the advantages of corpus-based and rule-based MT approaches in order to improve the performance of MT systems—most importantly, the quality of translation. The authors review the ongoing activities in the field and present a case study, which shows how translation knowledge can be drawn from parallel corpora and compiled into the lexicon of a rule-based MT system. These data are obtained with the help of three procedures: (1) identification of hence unknown one-word translations, (2) statistical rating of the known one-word translations, and (3) extraction of new translations of multiword expressions (MWEs) followed by compilation steps which create new rules for the MT engine. As a result, the lexicon is enriched with translation equivalents attested for different subject domains, which facilitates the tuning of the MT system to a specific subject domain and improves the quality and adequacy of translation.

Abstract English-speaking movies and television series are flourishing in Hong Kong, and Chinese screen subtitles are often provided to the audience. Studies relating to subtitling have often discussed reduction methods and reduction categories, but little work has touched on the areas of and reasons for under-translation. The author has observed that sexually suggestive information is often under-translated in English-Chinese subtitling. Some instances suggest that the under-translation is related to the translator's ignorance of English idiomatic usage, or the translator's insensitivity of the translation to the implicit information. Some other example indicates, however, that the translator is neither ignorant nor insensitive about the implied meaning. The translator has shown in the subtitling that he or she knows the implicit meaning, and that attempts were made to tone down the message a great deal, probably out of socio-psychological, cultural and euphemistic reasons. These observations based on video-taped examples have identified the existence of non-linguistic constraints in cross-linguistic and cross-cultural activities such as translation. Résumé Les films et les feuilletons de télévision parlant anglais ont énormément de succès à Hong Kong, et la plupart d'entre eux sont sous-titrés en chinois. Les études consacrées au sous-titrage parlent souvent de méthodes permettant de condenser le texte, ainsi que de catégories de réduction, mais on n'a jamais examiné le domaine de la sous-traduction ni les raisons de cette 'euphémisation'. L'auteur a remarqué que les informations suggestives sont souvent sous-traduites dans les sous-titrages anglais-chinois. D'aucuns suggèrent que la sous-traduction est liée à la méconnaissance du traducteur des expressions idiomatiques anglaises, ou qu'elle serait due à l'insensibilité du traducteur à l'égard de la traduction des informations implicites. D'autres exemples indiquent toutefois que le traducteur n'est ni ignorant ni insensible quant à la signification implicite. Des sous-titrages prouvent que le traducteur comprend la signification implicite mais qu'il s'est éfforcé d'atténuer grandement le message, et ce vraisemblablement pour des raisons socio-psychologiques, culturelles et d'euphémisme. Ces observations, basées sur des exemples enregistrés sur des cassettes vidéo, ont permis de constater l'existence de contraintes non linguistiques dans les activités de transfert linguistiques et culturelles que sont la traduction par exemple.

Translating programs into continuation-passing style is a well-studied tool to explicitly deal with the control structure of programs. This is useful, for example, for compilation. In a typed setting, there also is a logical interpretation of such a translation as an embedding of classical logic into intuitionistic logic. A naturally arising question is whether there is an inverse translation back to direct style. The answer to this question depends on how the continuation-passing translation is defined and on the domain of the inverse translation. In general, translating programs from continuation-passing style back to direct style requires the use of control operators to account for the use of continuations in non-trivial ways. We present two languages, one in direct style and one in continuation-passing style. Both languages are typed and equipped with an abstract machine semantics. Moreover, both languages allow for non-trivial control flow. We further present a translation to continuation-passing style and a translation back to direct style. We show that both translations are type-preserving and also preserve semantics in a very precise way giving an operational correspondence between the two languages. Moreover, we show that the compositions of the translations are well-behaved. In particular, they are syntactic one-sided inverses on the full language and full syntactic inverses when restricted to trivial control flow.

Bilingual machine readable dictionaries are important and indispensable resources of information for cross-language information retrieval, and machine translation. Recently, these cross-language informational activities have begun to focus on specific academic or technological domains. In this paper, we describe a bilingual dictionary acquisition system which extracts translations from non-parallel but comparable corpora of a specific academic domain and disambiguates the extracted translations. The proposed method is two-fold. At the first stage, candidate terms are extracted from a Japanese and English corpus, respectively, and ranked according to their importance as terms. At the second stage, ambiguous translations are resolved by selecting the target language translation which is the nearest in rank to the source language term. Finally, we evaluate the proposed method in an experiment.

Abstract In this article we present a novel linguistically driven evaluation method and apply it to the main approaches of Machine Translation (Rule-based, Phrase-based, Neural) to gain insights into their strengths and weaknesses in much more detail than provided by current evaluation schemes. Translating between two languages requires substantial modelling of knowledge about the two languages, about translation, and about the world. Using English-German IT-domain translation as a case-study, we also enhance the Phrase-based system by exploiting parallel treebanks for syntax-aware phrase extraction and by interfacing with Linked Open Data (LOD) for extracting named entity translations in a post decoding framework.

We consider general higher-order matrix elliptic differential–difference operators in arbitrary domains with small variable translations in lower-order terms. The operators are introduced by means of general higher-order quadratic forms on arbitrary domains. Each lower-order term depends on its own translation and all translations are governed by a small multi-dimensional parameter. The operators are considered either on the entire space or an arbitrary multi-dimensional domain with a regular boundary. The boundary conditions are also arbitrary and general and involve small variable translations. Our main results state that the considered operators converge in the norm resolvent sense to ones with zero translations in the best possible operator norm. Estimates for the convergence rates are established as well. We also prove the convergence of the spectra and pseudospectra.

Existing work on domain adaptation for statistical machine translation has consistently assumed access to a small sample from the test distribution (target domain) at training time. In practice, however, the target domain may not be known at training time or it may change to match user needs. In such situations, it is natural to push the system to make safer choices, giving higher preference to domain-invariant translations, which work well across domains, over risky domain-specific alternatives. We encode this intuition by (1) inducing latent subdomains from the training data only; (2) introducing features which measure how specialized phrases are to individual induced sub-domains; (3) estimating feature weights on out-of-domain data (rather than on the target domain). We conduct experiments on three language pairs and a number of different domains. We observe consistent improvements over a baseline which does not explicitly reward domain invariance.
