Streszczenie:
The recent uprise of end-to-end speech translation models requires a new generation of parallel corpora, composed of a large amount of source language speech utterances aligned with their target language textual translations. We hereby show a pipeline and a set of methods to collect hundreds of hours of English audio-book recordings and align them with their Italian textual translations, using exclusively public domain resources gathered semi-automatically from the web. The pipeline consists in three main areas: text collection, bilingual text alignment, and forced alignment. For the text collection task, we show how to automatically find e-book titles in a target language by using machine translation, web information retrieval, and named entity recognition and translation techniques. For the bilingual text alignment task, we investigated three methods: the Gale–Church algorithm in conjunction with a small-size hand-crafted bilingual dictionary, the Gale–Church algorithm in conjunction with a bigger bilingual dictionary automatically inferred through statistical machine translation, and bilingual text alignment by computing the vector similarity of multilingual embeddings of concatenation of consecutive sentences. Our findings seem to indicate that the consecutive-sentence-embeddings similarity computation approach manages to improve the alignment of difficult sentences by indirectly performing sentence re-segmentation. For the forced alignment task, we give a theoretical overview of the preferred method depending on the properties of the text to be aligned with the audio, suggesting and using a TTS-DTW (text-to-speech and dynamic time warping) based approach in our pipeline. The result of our experiments is a publicly available multi-modal corpus composed of about 130 hours of English speech aligned with its Italian textual translation and split in 60561 triplets of English audio, English transcript, and Italian textual translation. We also post-processed the corpus so as to extract 40-MFCCs features from the audio segments and released them as a data-set.

Streszczenie:
xiii, 164 p. : ill. (some col.)
We explore the frequency translation of single-photon states of light and the creation of photon pairs by four-wave mixing in optical fiber. Frequency translation refers to changing the central frequency of a field, while photon pair creation refers to the creation of two individual photons at the same time. We demonstrate these effects in third-order nonlinear optical fiber. While both phenomena have previously been shown by three-wave mixing in second-order nonlinear media, there are compelling reasons to develop these tasks in third-order media. Most importantly, frequency translation in third-order material allows for the practical implementation of both small and large frequency shifts, while second-order material only practically allows for large shifts. Photon creation in third-order media often permits more flexible phase-matching conditions, allowing for the creation of a wider variety of quantum states than is often possible in second-order media. In our theoretical study of photon pair creation, we focus on the spectral correlations of the photon pairs. We pay particular attention to the creation of quantum states of high purity, where the photons are not spectrally correlated with one another. High purity photons are a requisite resource for several different quantum information processing applications, such as linear-optical quantum computing. We find that states with high purity can be realized with a minimal amount of spectral filtering. Experimentally, we study photon frequency translation in photonic crystal fiber. The central wavelength of the input photons was translated from 683 nm to 659 nm. We perform second-order intensity correlation measurements on both channels to demonstrate their quantum nature. This resulted in values of 0.21 ± 0.02 and 0.19 ± 0.05 for the 683-nm and 659-nm channels, respectively, demonstrating that those fields were dominated by their single-photon component. The efficiency at which the process occurred was 29 percent. Theoretically, we develop a Green function formalism to describe the translation process and develop a computational model to calculate the solution to the governing equations. Also, in a related experiment, we demonstrate classical frequency translation from 851 nm to 641 nm, a record translation in both wavelength and frequency, at an efficiency of 0.2 percent in a birefringent fiber.

Syed, Mohamed Ahmed. "Use of evidence and knowledge translation approaches facilitating co-creation of evidence in public health". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2017. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/98559/.

Streszczenie:
Best available research evidence is essential but not the only type of evidence needed in public health decision making. Decisions are also influenced and must take into account factors other than research evidence. This approach in public health is called evidence-informed public health (EIPH). A fundamental concept of EIPH is to take into account realities of a specific real-world environment when translating research evidence into policy and practice. Therefore approaches to co-creation of best available evidence for decision making - evidence that is informed by best available research evidence but that also incorporates other types of information to address decision makers’ needs - are necessary for knowledge translation in public health. This thesis includes published works which report findings on 1) the use of research and other types of evidence and barriers and facilitators of its use and 2) KT approaches facilitating co-creation of best available evidence in public health policy making and practice. The eight publications included in this thesis studied factors associated with evidence use and present examples of co-creating evidence. The published works on evidence use (Publications 1 and 2) were undertaken using qualitative methods, specifically, content analysis of policy documents and interviews with decision makers within physical activity policy-making. Examples of co-creating evidence to address barriers identified in Publication 2 (such as relevance of research, lack of resources, lack of applicability of research etc.) used the Delphi technique, Population Impact Measure and Coverage with Evidence Development methodologies. They were applied to inform public health policy and practice in areas which include SARS and SARS-like diseases (Publications 3 and 4), rare diseases (Publication 5), cardiovascular diseases, strokes, cancers (Publication 6) and Dupuytren’s disease (Publication 7 and 8). It is essential that approaches supporting the use of research and other types of evidence in public health continue to be developed and documented, and this thesis represents such an endeavour. Usefulness and effectiveness of different KT approaches facilitating evidence use and reduce its barriers must also be continuously evaluated as they are adopted or modified to deal with different issues in different settings. Effective interventions along with strategies facilitating their delivery and implementation can then be utilised by public health professionals and policy makers who wish to promote EIPH.

TAI, Pui Shan. "Interpretation and re-creation : English translations of poetry in the Sanguo Zhi Yanyi". Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2003. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/tran_etd/11.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis is a textual and contextual study of English renditions of poetry in Luo Guanzhong’s Sanguo zhi yanyi, in terms of their artistic approach and their bearing on the artistic functions which poetry fulfills in the novel. There are several English renditions of the Sanguo zhi yanyi in full or in part, including two full translations by Charles H. Brewit-Taylor and Moss Roberts. While the two full translations form the focus of the study, Roberts’s abridged version is also included. Published fifteen years before the full rendition by the same translator, the abridged version serves every now and then as a reference point showing how an individual’s interpretive perception may change over time and bear on choices made in a literary translation. Insertion of poetry in a novel is basically unique to Chinese fiction, often contributing to its overall artistic effects as an organic element. A Western reader coming from a different cultural background may employ different standards in evaluating the artistic role and appeal of poetry in a Chinese classical novel. In an attempt to be as flexible and open-minded as possible, this thesis does not adopt any particular theoretical perspective, but makes use of literary concepts to facilitate the analysis as appropriate. To assess the literary translations, concrete analysis of selected original poems in semantic, syntactic, auditory, imagistic, symbolic and stylistic terms is made before the strategies adopted by the translated versions, along with their merits and limitations, are discussed. Detailed discussions of textual features and contextual elements offer an evidence-based appraisal of the renditions. artistic approaches, which are significant in shedding light on the translators’ attempts to re-create and revitalize the artistic appeal of the source text within the multidimensional context of the target language and culture. It is also hoped that the thesis help shed light on some general as well as language- and culture-specific issues in the translation of classical Chinese poetry.

Streszczenie:
The aims of this study are to investigate the interactive strategies of the translators in the genre of popular science and the potential influence of translation practice on nontranslated popular science writings. The theoretical framework of interaction in written texts and translations is based on work on text-linguistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, and target-oriented and inter~ctional translation studies. The theoretical framework of the relationship between translations and non-translations draws mainly from polysystem theory and other empirical studies. The investigation is based on corpora comprising texts from Scientific American magazine (English and Chinese editions) and Academia Sillica Balanced Corpus of Modem Chinese. This corpus-based methodology is adopted to facilitate the observation of recurrent patterns of Interactive trends in a large body of texts. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are involved. Whereas quantitative analysis points out trends of interaction based on numerical evidence, qualitative analysis focuses on contextualised factors and seeks to explain the interactive phenomena. The textual findings of interactive patterns are then further supported by paratextual evidence. The study finds that the Chinese translators of popular science writings tend to take an active approach in mediating the gap between source text writers and target readers. The translators use more interactive strategies than the source text writers to involve the readers in the texts. Another important finding is that, based on the use of selected interactive features, we suggest that the Chinese popular science writings have been influenced by the interactive strategies used by the'translators; and have begun to show trends of more active writer-reader interaction which are not seen in iraditional popular science writings in Taiwan.

This thesis focuses on the technical approach to the translation of the Italian horror role-playing game Sine Requie into English. It aims to prove that both the role-playing and horror aspects of the genre are important to convey an enjoyable experience to the players, and that it is possible to create and international reference glossary to better translate the horror genre itself. Following a brief introduction of the history of role-playing games (RPGs), we will look at the RPG technical vocabulary in Sine Requie, and analyze which of these elements can be translated following the great models of the history of role-playing games. A brief introduction will follow regsrding the horror genre and its core characteristics based on the work of worldwide famous horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. Lastly, a description on how the international reference glossary for the horror genre was created will be presented along with a few examples of its practical use.

Streszczenie:
Background: Mental health challenges have been identified as the most significant health issue facing young people. Leaders in the field have advocated for public health approaches to better address this issue. Some scholars have called for interventions informed by young people to enhance relevance and effectiveness of interventions. Knowledge translation (KT) has emerged in the health context as a strategy to promote the uptake of evidence to improve health outcomes; however, the majority of KT research to date has focused on clinical settings. The needs of researchers and practitioners working in community settings to address population-level health outcomes have not been adequately attended to, leading to calls for further development of community-based knowledge translation (CBKT), an approach underpinned by the tenets of participatory research and KT. Given these gaps, the purpose of this research was to contribute to the field of CBKT through the development, implementation and evaluation of a youth-driven mental health promotion initiative. Methods: This study utilized a case study design and was conducted in a rural community located in North-Central British Columbia, Canada. A mixed methods approach incorporating quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews and ethnographic field notes was used to examine the contextual factors associated with adolescent mental health, develop a CBKT framework to inform future work in this field, and assess the influence of a CBKT initiative on youth mental health. Findings: Findings demonstrate ways in which adolescent mental health may be influenced by contextual factors, evidence that can be used to inform change efforts to improve youth mental health. Further, a theoretically-driven and evidence-informed CBKT framework is introduced and used to illustrate how it can inform context-relevant, youth-driven initiatives. The CBKT approach utilized was shown to make a contribution to enhancing positive aspects of mental health such as resilience and connectedness among young people. Further, this approach was linked by study participants to changes at a community-level that foster mental health outcomes such as civic engagement, shifting norms and empowerment. Conclusions: CBKT shows promise as an approach to addressing one of the leading public health issues facing young people today, mental health challenges.

The literary translation is the kind of the creation during which a literary work in one language is translated into other one. The specific character of the literary translation is on the one hand in its place among other kinds of translation and on the other hand in its correlation with the original literary creation. The literary translation deals not only with the language in its communicative function. Here a word is the first and the most important element of the literature that is in its aesthetic function. There is a difficult process between the initial stage and the result of the translation. So translation is the kind of activity where necessary linguistic knowledge and the translator’s initiative are united in one whole part.

Hatzidaki, Elisavet.

The art of creativity in literature is undeniable and certainly authors may express themselves in any number of ways in order to vehicle their thoughts or emotions. What about translation though? Indeed, the overall movement of creativity may be hidden or altered when translation is done by a third party. The focus of the present PhD thesis is on how self-translation supplies the creative ability of bilingual authors who translate their own novels. This work carries out an approach on translating problems revealed in Vassilis Alexakis' novel La langue maternelle (The mother tongue) which won the french literary award Prix Médicis in 1995. Our study achieves its purpose through meticulous analysis of field data, most precisely by exploring unpublished manuscripts, as well as greek and french versions published on a twelve-year framework. The present dissertation argues that Vassilis Alexakis' literary work is not a mere translation but a text (re)written from scratch after revising his own translation, thus his work is a constant creative and amazing process. Publications comparison reveals more than two thousand cases, classified into five specific categories so as to allow better analysis : morphosyntaxic, semantic, cultural, omissions and reproduction. Focus is also given to the level of personal implication, the relationship between identity and alterity and the diachronic dimension of hellenic elements via self-translation procedure. The research findings are various. Obviously, the literary work is not complete until he has revised and translated it, given that every translation implies a new version. We have noticed a felicitous use of language and author's tendency to transfer message more freely, as he knows intuitevely which rendering is more adequate and suitable. He often uses modulation strategy in order to translate source texts elements. Moreover, bilingual communication seems to be complementary and apparently his versions do not exist in isolation from one another. Indeed, even if they present apparent differences, their poetic function is too similar to be considered separate. It is also discussed if the use of alienating strategy enriches target culture and intralinguistic dialogue. The overall function of Aleaxakis' self-translation appears to play a double role ; on the one hand ensuring a dynamic and harmonius network between french and greek languages, whose reciprocal interferences warrant pure creativity and innovative literature and on the other hand, ensuring finding and inventing, and consequently learning and knowing acquisition, through the trip towards the other side

This research deals with the morphology, the meanings and the symbologies of 35 most frequent lexical creations in the British version of the Harry Potter series and of their linguistic correspondents belonging to the Brazilian version. In this sense, one of the aims of the research was to identify the most recurrent lexical creation processes among the words in both versions. Another aim was to verify whether the creative processes of the words that were not maintained in the target text influenced the morphological and lexical choices of the translator of the series in Brazil, in the creation of new lexical forms and in the use of words already existing in Portuguese in new contexts or with new meanings, in the target text. For both aims, the creative processes and the primary meanings of the words in question were described. Also, to facilitate the consultation of the analysed lexical creations and to contextualise them, a bilingual glossary was elaborated. Furthermore, among the obtained data, the words Dumbledore, Malfoy and Quirrell, which were maintained in translation, were selected, in order to carry out a comparative and detailed analysis about the symbolic relations involving these three words, in the source and target texts. In theoretical and methodological terms, translation was considered as an interpretative activity that produces meanings and never escapes the hierarchy of cultural values existing in the target language. Furthermore, the presuppositions from Corpus Linguistics and Corpus-Based Translation Studies, as well as those from lexical and morphological theories that are relevant to understand and to describe lexical creation phenomena, were employed. To extract the data, a parallel corpus containing the source and target texts of the series, the software WordSmith Tools (version 6.0), lexicographical works and the corpora British National Corpus (World Version) and Lácio-Ref were used. In respect of the results, composition by juxtaposition and the change from common name to proper name were found to be the most recurrent creative processes among the 35 most frequent lexical creations in the source text. Also among these creations, most (19) was found to have been maintained in the translated text. Concerning the 16 words in the target text that correspond to the other 16 lexical creations belonging to the source text, it was identified that the most frequent creative processes among them are the change from common name to proper name and other processes that were not found in the consulted bibliography. When comparing these 16 words with their correspondents in the source text, it was observed that this comparison does not permit to verify whether the translator’s morphological and lexical choices were influenced by the creative processes of these correspondents. The words showed that other factors can have influenced these choices, namely: meanings of the source word, the fact that the source word is or arouses the etymon of the target word, structure of the source word, a certain characteristic of the referent, system of the target language. Through the symbolic analyses of the words Dumbledore, Malfoy and Quirrell, it was verified that the translated text breaks symbolic nets, whilst maintaining relations and meanings, generating new meanings and new relations and conveying cultural features of the target language.

The actual research analyzes the translational relations from the movie Apocalypse Now (1979), from Francis Ford Coppola, with its sources, especially the novel The Heart of Darkness (2006), from Joseph Conrad and Dispatches (2005), from Michael Herr. The objective was to investigate how the cinematographic masterpiece was built from the intersemiotic translations of its sources. This research also analyzes the meanings developed by the masterpiece, pointing to convergent and dissonant points with its sources, verifying how the elements transposition (time, space, points of views, conflicts and characters) of literary and journalistic texts for the movie happen to be. The research justifies in the fact that the movie of Coppola does not translate in a sequence the novel narrative of Conrad and the other texts used for the movie industry, but to change concepts and ideas into moving images. Convencionally, this kind of criticism sees the adaptation tasks by certain kind of criteria like accuracy of the movie text in relation to the literary text. It needs to be understood how the translation process happens between sources and adaptation, respecting the specificities of each semiotic system, making the intersemiotic translation a method that can create a new masterpiece and not just a identity copy, from one to another. The movie Apocalypse Now creation process is also the object of this research and will be guided by the Genetics Criticism elements. Interpretations from authors who are considered references on the theme were considered, such as: Robert Stam, Julio Plaza, Sergei Eisenstein, Cecília Salles. In terms of method, scenes, parts and frames from Apocalypse Now were analyzed, starting by the surface thoughts, as Flusser teaches us, opposing to line thoughts, that can be found in literary texts. The movie production entry were also analyzed, like the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991), with its coulisse, both realyzed by Eleanor Coppola, such as interviews with the diretor, screenwriter and the actors of the movie

I have written and translated a collection of poetry into German, comparing the obvious constraints of minimalist poetry to longer and prosaic forms. In addition to pertinent literature, I utilize my educational background in German as well as a recent foreign language internship to explore the limitations and complexities of translating contemporary minimalist poetry. I focus on how, because of its inherent need for syntactic brevity, minimalist poetry can often be one of the most difficult types of poetry to translate.

Connolly, Brigit. "Translating practice". Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2018. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/3460/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Translatability and translation, the possibility and act of conveying some thing between people, objects, languages, cultures, times, spaces and media, have become increasingly important elements of creative practice and works of art. My research explores this proposition. To contextualise this concept of translation as an artistic and critical method mediating the relationship of the seeable to the sayable I retrace an under-mined vein of translation that grew from the Enlightenment, the Early (Jena) Romantic response to it and its subsequent development through Walter Benjamin to other modern theorists. I suggest that this tradition of translation has developed into a creative method that assumes a pre-existent given from which it evolves in order to destabilise, re-appropriate and make-new. The thesis argues that art has come to occupy the space of translation and proposes that an interpretative mode is ultimately antithetical to a form of thought engaged with in the creative process. This relies on the understanding of a qualitative distinction between acts of translation as presentational and of interpretation as representational. The distinction is not clear-cut since these two forms of mediation operate on a continuum. The probable root of “interpret” in English is “between prices” and derives from trade. This etymology stresses the transactional, hermeneutic role of the interpreter as a responsive agent that negotiates between distinct value systems to ensure equivalence during the process of exchange. While Interpretation operates primarily within the symbolic aspect of language translation retains a relationship to metaphor, which acknowledges that during transfer something becomes something that it literally is not. It must therefore also account for Aporia, or what fails to cross over and for a-signifying, singular aspects that affect or alter the symbolic during this process. In contrast to interpretation, translation’s relation to subjectivity, its resistance to schematisation and reduction to the accurate, objective and rational transfer of information provides a prophylaxis of doubt and generates heterogeneity. The thesis triangulates my practices as artist, translator and critic using translation to destabilise and re-calibrate the relationship of theory to practice. In relation to theory, rather than use this to explain, interpret, or categorize art, it advocates the translational practice of placing in parallel so that lines of thought may be drawn from one to the other, responding to and setting up points of intersection, divergence and congruence to encourage a non-hierarchical associative-dissociative dismantling. Translation informs the research method, structure and content of the thesis, which occupies an inter-theoretical, inter-disciplinary or matrixial space. As such, it is edified through a process that derives from and displays the translational method and diverse sources that constitute it. Four case studies bring together practices employing a translational method from different periods, cultures, creative practices and theoretical sources: Bernard Leach and Ezra Pound’s modernist projects; Jorge Luis Borges’ theory of translation and Briony Fer’s re-presentation of Eva Hesse’s studio work; the Brazilian poets Haroldo and Agosto De Campos’ theory of Cannibalistic translation and painter Adriana Varejao’s work with tiles; and ceramicist Alison Britton in light of Donald Winnicott’s concept of transitional spaces.

The objective of this dissertation is to provide a critical examination of poetry translation, using as a framework the notion that translation of poetry is comparable to an act of murder or homicide. Constructs pertaining to detective fiction are used as a basis to expose critical theories and commentary on poetry translation, which validate the comparison, taking into account the integrity of the poetic text, the context in which it exists, and the identity (constructed or real) of the poet. Four published translations, by different authors, into English of Anna Akhmatova’s poem Posledniy tost (‘The Last Toast’) are analysed in detail to demonstrate the validity of the argument and to attempt to review and quantify the loss of a poem’s essential and vital qualities as a result of translation.

Streszczenie:
The Thesis analyses and evaluates how Gavin Douglas (Eneados, 1513) has refocused Virgil's Aeneid, principally by giving more emphasis to the serial particularity inherent in the story, loosening the narrative structure and involving the reader in its retelling. Chapter I pieces together (from the evidence not merely of what Douglas explicitly says, but of what his words imply) what for him a "text" in general is, and what accordingly it means for a translator or a reader to be engaged with it. This sets the scene for what follows. The next four Chapters look in turn at how he re-expresses important (metaphysical) characteristics of the story. In Chapter II his handling of time is discussed, and compared with Virgil's: the Chapter sets out in detail how Douglas consistently refocuses temporal predicates, foregrounding their disjunctiveness and making them differently felt. In Chapter III spatial position and distance are analysed, and Douglas' way of dealing with space is found to display parallels with his treatment of time: networks are loosened and nodal points are accentuated. In Chapter IV the way in which he presents individuals is compared with Virgil's, and a similar repatterning and shift reveals itself: Douglas provides his persons with firmer boundaries. Chapter V deals with fate, where Douglas encounters special difficulties but maintains his characteristic way of handling the story. The aim of these four Chapters is to characterise formally how Douglas concretises and vivifies the tale of Aeneas, engaging his readers throughout in the retelling. Finally, Chapter VI looks at certain general principles of translation theory (notably connected with the ideas of faithfulness and accuracy) and argues for a way in which Douglas' translation can be fairly experienced by the reader and fairly evaluated as a lively retelling which (albeit distinctive) is fundamentally faithful to Virgil.

Streszczenie:
This thesis makes an inquiry into the literary translation and creation in the early twentieth-century China, particularly between the years 1900 and 1925. I combine the theoretical approaches of both translation studies and intertextuality studies to form the overall methodological framework that informs the discussions in the thesis. Although the modern transformation of Chinese literature has long been discussed and debated in various scholarly works, which often attribute the transformation to foreign influences and reconstruction of indigenous literary tradition, a theoretical language is urgently required to articulate the exact process of literary adaptation and appropriation. Rather than taking the concept of “influence” at face value, I probe the intricate process of influence by examining the way Chinese writers and translators creatively translated and intertextualized foreign literary works to construct new literary texts. The two modalities of literary production – translation and intertextuality – call for the approaches of translation studies and intertextuality studies, and only when both approaches are taken into account can a fuller understanding of the literary scene in the early years of twentieth-century China be obtained. I apply my methodology to the study of the transformation of emotional expressions which are most frequently found in love fiction. By combining translation and intertextuality, some Chinese writer-translators such as Bao Tianxiao and Zhou Shoujuan creatively translated foreign fiction, conveying emotions different from those intended by the original texts while at the same time introducing new modes of emotional expression to Chinese literature. Others, such as Su Manshu and Yu Dafu, borrowed foreign literary texts to construct their own literary creations, appropriating the emotions conveyed by the foreign texts. As a result of the vigorous adaptation and appropriation of Chinese writer-translators, new modes of emotional expression emerged in modern Chinese literature.

Streszczenie:
A translator works as a mediator between an original work that has been written in one language, a source text, and those who will be the audience of the translation, or, in other words, the target text. Translating a text is often a challenging task, as the translator must keep in mind both the source text and its author’s intentions with the text, and also its intended audience, but also keep in mind the target audience of the target text. Translating can become even more challenging with children’s literature, as they, among other things, often can contain very creative, imaginative and playful use of language. In this study, The BFG, a popular children’s book from 1982 written by the British author Roald Dahl, is analyzed – both the English source text and the Japanese translation by Taeko Nakamura. The research question to be answered is the following: When looking at the speech style, or idiolect, of the character "the BFG" of Roald Dahl’s The BFG, with a focus on neologisms, wordplay and allusions, what difficulties exist in the source text and what efforts have been made by the translator in attempts to achieve an equivalent effect in the target text? The results of this study display several difficulties that can arise when attempting to translate the idiolect of the BFG, especially due to its vast amount of expressive language. Replacement with standard language and deletion were two of the main translation strategies, and the number of identified cases of neologisms, wordplay and allusions in the source text was over double the amount identified in the target text. However, it is also shown how the translator has used different means to compensate for the source text features that may have gotten lost in translation.

This work begins with the analysis of the invented languages in the European society starting from the second half of the XIXth century. Those auxiliary languages, as opposed to those named natural, have some characteristics which sometimes can assimilate or, in other cases, can differentiate those languages. Moreover, the analysis highlights how they were publicised at the time of their creation or in some cases as well as in these days, in order to motivate the learners, from different countries, to study those new languages. The analysis is then focused on the linguistic creation in the fiction of the literature with a large plurilinguistic corpus. Depending on the texts, some of the new languages take inspiration from real languages while some others differentiate from the real world languages, taking the reader into another universe. The last part of the analysis presents some cases of translations of the invented languages in literature, and for few of them the comparison of more than one version. Some authors concentrate the new language in specific parts of the text or for a special vocabulary whilst others assign this language to a character throughout all the text. The thesis ends with the presentation of three authors who play with the possibilities of their written language and shows what the results of the translations of those texts are

Streszczenie:
The subject of this thesis is the implementation of e-commerce as a technical and commercial strategy of a mail order company. The study is longitudinal and mainly performed with interviews and observations during 2001 and 2009. I have analyzed the material with the help of translation theory and with an emphasis on Callon (1986).The study revealed that the mail order company over time changed the way e-commerce was looked upon and thereby also the way that the company should organize. I identified six different definitions of e-commerce which sequentially replaced one another as the idea that was to be translated in the company. In the beginning of the translating process the idea with e-commerce was identified as mainly technical, but that changed over time and thereafter mainly became a commercial idea about trade. This meant that focus shifted and that the persons involved in translating e-commerce also became more closely linked to the market and the customers. The e-commerce site was then defined as a shop or a warehouse and thereby became connected with familiar physical places and not with abstract digital and technical places such as cyberspace where sites are offline or online. At the end of the study e-commerce tended to be defined as an opportunity for customers to shop together and thereby being social on an interactive media. This meant that the customers contributed in defining new boundaries for the company, boundaries that included the customers since they now could interact with each other as well as with the company on the web site. The idea with e-commerce was thereby translated several times in the company during the time of the study. The translation process was bewildering for the company and meant at the end of the study that it identified itself as an e-commerce company and not as a mail order company, partly due to that 60% of the customer orders were then laid over the Internet. Another reason was that mail order was considered out of date and that e-commerce was and is the main channel for distance shopping today at the studied company.

This thesis examines the translations and retellings of stories aimed at children that have been published in the Irish language between 1922 and 2012. The central role of the state-led publishing house, An Gum, in creating a corpus of literature for children is analysed using unpublished correspondence from the publisher's archives. The ideologies behind the choice of texts published by An Gum and by various other publishing houses are also examined. Of particular interest are the translation strategies that can be seen in the retellings and adaptations of traditional stories, as well as in the translations of canonical children's novels in this time frame. The effect that the boom in immersion education had on publications is analysed, as well as the role of international book fairs, such as those held in Frankfurt and Bologna, in corpus creation for children. Throughout the thesis, the context in which translation takes place and the practical function of translated texts are examined, as well as historical and contemporary trends. To further illuminate the methodologies that were used in this period, some of the most interesting phenomena in Irish-language publishing for children are analysed in the form of case studies. The thesis culminates in a practical case study in which I have chosen a French text for translation into Irish, and have justified the choices I have made in the creative translation process.

This research aims to focus on Korean short stories written by young writers born in the 1980s. Despite being raised under a democracy and easier conditions than their seniors, the so-called “young generation” of writers displays a constant gloominess and uneasiness in their works. Through the examples of five short stories, loneliness and silence are analyzed under an interdisciplinary approach, making use of both literary and translation studies. While producing a fully commented translation, this thesis shows how the fact of being alone can be felt by young people in today’s Korean society, opposing a negative loneliness coming from the isolation from the group one wishes to be part of, and a positive solitude viewed as a oasis of calm in the middle of a roaring daily life often made stressful by the Confucian-hierarchy-inspired norms. We analyze how being alone can be seen both in a positive and negative way, and also as a voluntary or involuntary fact. Furthermore, the characters displayed in the short stories suffer from difficulties of speech and communication. Real and direct communication is hardly made possible, would it be a matter of “wrongly-said” from the first speaker, or “wrongly-understood” from the interlocutor. When this speech uneasiness turns into silence, the involuntary incapacity to speak from fear is added to the voluntary choice to hide from the risks of a distorted oral production. Thus, while expressing the suffering of one’s life, silent expression such as writing and literature appears to be the easiest choice

Lisa Bresner (1971-2007) was a multi-talented and prolific artist : novelist, translator, sinologist, children’s book author, short film director, and lecturer on Chinese civilization. Though her life was brief, she left behind a rich body of over thirty works – including novels, essays, translations, poetry, and children's books – that served as a cultural bridge between France and the Far East. This research explores three main aspects of how Lisa Bresner integrated Chinese and Japanese cultures into her literary creations. First, we examine her children’s literature, focusing on how she combined her imagination and love for Chinese ideograms to craft a poetic, transcultural universe that is both accessible and educational for young readers. Next, we explore her translations and works as a sinologist, highlighting how she made classical Chinese texts accessible to French readers while infusing them with her own creative touch. Finally, we delve into her novels, where she addresses themes of identity and otherness through characters that reflect her personal journey of self-discovery, shaped by encounters with different cultures. Our study seeks to answer a key question : How did Lisa Bresner, through her transcultural works, blend her personal experiences with Asian culture to explore the boundaries between self and other ? By drawing on her published works from 1992 to 2008, as well as her manuscripts and letters archived at IMEC, we aim to shed light on the unique way in which she contributed to bridging Eastern and Western cultures

Though mediation and cultural mediation seem to be enrooted in Translation Studies especially since the Cultural Turn, a specialized definition of these notions is still missing. Based on their definitions in other different domains – especially cultural communication – and on a causal theory of translation, we present a three-fold thesis on the translator as a cultural mediator and on his deliberate interventions. The three axes we develop here are based on identity, textual and functionalist approaches. First, we analyze the specificity of the identity of the translator seen as a construction that is not only marked by the linguistic formation and the sociocultural norms of his original community, but also by the actor’s empathy towards the Other and his system of norms. In this first fold, translation strategies are studied as mirrors of identity strategies the translator follows in order to keep the coherence and the valorization of his identity construction. Then, the texts and types of texts are considered as cultural creations that the translator re-presents to his community through making cultural differences understandable on the formal, lexical and discourse levels. To do so, he uses different writing norms from the most conforming to the most differentiating one. In this second fold, the translator’s preface is seen as a privileged place for a direct mediation, in which he already informs his reader about the translation he’s about to read and recommends the reading. Finally, we study two translation functions through which the translator acts on the cultural identity of his community based on his re-presentation of the text: the intellectual formation of the reader and the de-construction/ re-construction of his identity. By the means of a simple text or of an educational institution, the translator’s first aim is to inform the reader, and through this information, he acts on the re-definition of essential foundations of his identity construction

Omar, Lamis Ismail. "A cognitive approach to the translation of creative metaphor in Othello and Macbeth from English into Arabic". Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6965/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Despite the intriguing nature of metaphor and its acknowledged importance in the discipline of Translation Studies (TS), a relatively small number of studies have explored the translation of metaphor from the perspective of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, and very few of them adopted an experiential approach to the object of analysis. This research aims at exploring the translatability of creative metaphor in six Arabic translations of Shakespeare’s Othello and Macbeth based on a combined methodology that adopts the Conceptual Theory of Metaphor and the descriptive approach to text analysis in TS. The empirical study argues that metaphor translatability is an experiential process that is highly influenced by the diversity and richness of our conceptual system and the background knowledge shared by the metaphor producer and metaphor translator. Discussing metaphor translatability from the perspective of these factors involves dealing with different levels of variation in our metaphoric thinking including the cultural, contextual and pragmatic levels. The analyses and discussions of the empirical study mark a departure from text-linguistic approaches to the topic in that they deal with the Source Text’s and Target Text’s metaphoric content as physically embedded conceptual models rather than linguistic patterns with grammatically delineated features and structures. The arguments of the study answer several questions with regard to researching the translation of metaphor from the perspective of Conceptual Theory, providing a detailed description of what exactly influences the process and product of translation, and underlining the functionality of the variation factor in appreciating the conceptual nature of metaphor. The results of the empirical research reveal that, although our metaphoric thinking has a universally shared metaphoric structure, not all our metaphors are translatable or translated in a single way, which refutes the supremacy of the notion of metaphor universality, putting emphasis on the factors of experientialism, exposure and intentionality.

Creativity and subversion in Joan Sales’ rewritings focuses on the editor and novelist Joan Sales (1912-1983) and seeks to relocate the author of Uncertain Glory in the Catalan literary scene from a diversification of points of view from which it becomes possible to make an study. Translation theories of the late twentieth century have been used as a basis, written by authors such as André Lefevere and Susan Bassnett, who consider translation, edition, adaptation, critics and historiography inside the field of creative rewriting and give a subversive power to all these activities. So, the goal has been try to change the trend that historically had considered negatively Sales’ rewritings. Under the umbrella of the theory of rewriting, manipulations, changes and interventions become a tool which contributes to the development of literary culture.

Streszczenie:
Nervous system injuries represent serious burdens to both those afflicted, and to global healthcare, costing several billions each year to manage. Whilst functional recovery is possible with minor injuries, current treatments fall short in the more severe cases, and more refined treatment options are needed in order to relieve both the physical and economic burdens. The development of cell transplantation therapies utilising biomaterials as a scaffold has garnered attention in recent years, however there is still debate over which materials to use, and how they should be employed. This project has three goals: to identify a suitable hydrogel candidate for supporting growth of glia for a peripheral nerve transplantation therapy; to determine changes in gene expression of Schwann cells infused into the best hydrogel candidate; and to determine the efficacy of a Schwann cell-infused hydrogel nerve conduit on the regeneration of a full sciatic nerve transection injury in mice. Firstly, we profiled five biomaterials and evaluated their potential for use for cellular transplantation therapies, with the aim of improving the post-transplantation survival rate of the encapsulated cells. Using live dead assays, along with 3D imaging techniques, we found that there were no significant reductions in cell viability when encapsulating cells in hydrogels at the high seeding densities required for transplantation. From these results we determined that sodium alginate was the most appropriate hydrogel for our purposes and developed a sodium alginate nerve conduit designed to deliver Schwann cells into a peripheral nerve injury. Secondly, we developed a surgical method for transplanting cell-infused hydrogel conduit into a full sciatic nerve transection injury model in mice. We found that transplanting a sodium alginate filled conduit had a significant effect on the regeneration of a full sciatic nerve transection, whilst the addition of Schwann cells seemed to have little impact. Finally, to ascertain why the Schwann cell transplantation did not produce more tangible results, we used NextGen sequencing to identify changes in gene expression by Schwann cells between two methods of 3D cell culture, hydrogel encapsulation and spheroids, and 2D monolayer cultures. There Creating a three-dimensional nerve bridge: translating a laboratory device into a surgical product were minimal differences between the two 3D culture methods. More importantly, however, there were significant differences in the gene expression profiles between the 2D and 3D culture methods, with a heavy upregulation of immune response genes, and a downregulation of genes crucial to facilitating nerve regeneration. We determined that these gene expression changes in the 3D culture methods were unfavourable in the context of nerve injury treatment, and was likely the cause of the lack of difference between the sodium alginate filled conduit and Schwann cell transplantation groups in our surgeries. However, more experiments need to be performed in order to substantiate these results. Overall, this thesis demonstrates that sodium alginate hydrogel is suitable for generating nerve conduits and for embedding cells. However, Schwann cells in the 3D format had an unfavourable expression profile and future work should explore avenues for improving cell growth within 3D constructs. With these results, we hope to further develop a therapy that can be used to treat acute traumatic PNS injuries in humans, and potentially translate across to treating more serious nerve injuries such as traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries.

Three different poets are aproched in this research, are they: Sextus Propertius, Ezra Pound and Mário Faustino, poets from different times and languages. Pound creativily translated Propertius and Mário Faustino partialy translated Pound, thence the possibility of connecting them; Pound’s translation, central in this work, consists in a colection of twelve poems (and an extra) entitled Homage to Sextus Propertius, from which only five were translated by Faustino. Pound changed the way of how to read latin literature in english language, proposing a translation that seeked to pay tribute and to renew Propertius at the same time. His critic and translating approach echoed in Brazil through poets like Faustino and the Campos brothers; besides taking into account the paideuma, the most outstanding guideline Faustino learned from Pound is that of the poet responsability and his function in society. Starting from a presentantion of Propertius’ poetry, we proceed to comparatively analyse the translations made by Pound and Faustino, in order to infer the differences, gains and losts of both, considering the project of translation and the age of each. Lastly we present a complete translation suggestion of Homage to Sextus Propertius in portuguese, seeking to apply in practice the teorical discussion about translation that was developed through this work.

Streszczenie:
This research will seek to map the use and importation of sound symbolic forms, such as ideophones—including onomatopoeia—and interjections, into Italian through Disney comics. It will describe the slow and still on-going linguistic adaptation involved, which has been influencing the Italian language for the past eighty years by encouraging lexical experimentation and spurs of creativity on the part of Italian cartoonists and translators. Scholars tend to dismiss the topic here analysed by affirming that Romance languages have been deeply affected by Anglophonic influences, but these assumptions are rarely backed up by empirical data. Systematic studies on the creative potentials of Italian sound symbolism or on the influence of English ideophones and interjections based on an extended corpus are scarce. Similarly rare are studies on the use and function of ideophones across languages. This is a chance to look at how a single linguistic phenomenon (i.e. sound symbolism) has been moulded into a language through eight decades of assimilation and, more specifically, to study how the Italian language and Disney comics published in Italy have adapted in order to accommodate and successfully employ sound symbolic forms.

The aim of this dissertation is the creation of a terminology project of 50 entries in Slovak language. The domain of the project is green cars. The terminology resource was created as part of a project with the Terminology Coordination unit of the European Parliament (TermCoord), which is responsible for the managing of the IATE (InterActive Terminology for Europe) terminology database. The final result of the terminology project was presented to the TermCoord to be implemented into IATE. Apart from creating the resource, the results of the work conducted for this dissertation has lead to a deep analysis of the IATE database, putting the focus on the managing strategy of the resource and highlighting strong points and criticisms for the users of the database. The dissertation is composed of four chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to a theoretical overview of special languages and terminology, with a brief section dedicated to the building of corpora for terminology purposes. The second chapter presents the translation and terminology services at the EU institutions, which it was possible to analyse during the internship at the DGTranslation of the European Commission in Brussels. In the third chapter, the process for the extraction of the Slovak terms to input into the termbase is described, starting from the retrievement of terms in English and then analysisng the process to extract the Slovak equivalent to build the termbase. The fourth chapter analyses the results of the terminology research and illustrates the structure of the final monolingual termbase.

In the paper we will analyze the Italian localization of the first 5 chapters of the videogame The Last of Us. We will also offer alternative translations and will correct the localization mistakes. The paper consists of five chapters, introduction and conclusion. Each of the chapters represents a category of the revised translation: done badly, omitted translations, done well, could be improved, wrong register or wrong swear words translations. We will observe and analyze the Italian localization of the first five chapters of the videogame and propose the alternatives in the cases of errors and ambiguities, as well as highlight well done translations that reflect the differences between English and Italian grammar, syntax and semantics. The revised parts of the localization primarily include the translation of the subtitles and the artifacts (written documents, not voiced) within the game. The dubbing and the lip sync are not analyzed, unless they influence the translation in one way or another. The orthography and punctuation of the subtitles are kept the same in the thesis as they are in the game. The swear words will be fully spelled for transparency. In the conclusion we will close with the state of the Italian localization of videogames in general and of this one in particular.
