Streszczenie:
Japanese anime has gradually become popular in the worldwide animation market since the 1980s and 1990s. But it is only in recent years that it has begun to receive academic attention as part of popular culture studies. This paper focuses on gender transitioning in Japanese anime and its relationship with transgenderism. After a brief introduction to the history of gender transitioning in Japanese anime, it critically reviews related literature on Japanese anime and transgenderism. Through an analysis of specific work Kmpfer, which centers on gender transitioning, this paper explores transgenderism in Japanese anime. This paper argues that the subgenre of gender transitioning anime is not progressive, but instead reinforces male dominance and concepts of gender binary. Researchers of Japanese anime seldom pay attention to gender transitioning as a subgenre, and scholars of gender studies rarely consider how Japanese anime, with its huge influence on transgender communities in Japan, affects the way Japanese people perceive gender transitioning. This paper connects the two fields to examine issues that have often been neglected.

Streszczenie:
In Western societies the sex–gender binary informs individual experiences of gender transitioning. As with every passage of status, gender transition is regulated by formal and social norms aimed at re-establishing the ‘proper’ correspondence between sex and gender. In Italy, national legislation regulates the formal process of transforming one's gender, identifying medical science as the ‘proper’ social authority to manage gender transitioning in society. Only trans people who conform to social standards of sexual ‘normality’ are allowed to officially change their gender. However, in everyday life, alternative modes of gender transitioning exist and constitute a solid foundation to claim formal recognition by the State. This study is based on a qualitative sociological investigation of the process of gender transitioning in Italy that was carried out in Turin between 2008 and 2010.

Streszczenie:
David Albert Jones recently proposed an analogy between adoption and gender transitioning. Jones notes that adoption grants a child a social identity that is distinct from the natal identity and suggests that a similar situation might obtain in the case of gender transitioning. According to this proposal, a biological male who wishes to be called a woman is not assuming a false identity. Adoption and gender transitioning are significantly different, however: adoptive sonship participates in natural sonship in a way that is not true of the relationship between a biological woman and a man who wishes to be called a woman. Attention is given to different forms of analogy, leading to the conclusion that the use of the word woman for a biological male would be either a metaphor or a very weak analogy. In contrast, the term son as applied to an adopted boy fulfills the fundamental signification of that word.

New medical advances and options for transitioning along with an array of gender representations have provided gender diverse children and adolescents liberating possibilities. The transitioning youth's demands for recognition and/or support for initiation of medical intervention pushes against the analyst's theories of gender and challenges conservative understanding of sexual identity, moving it closer to the multidetermined nature of dreamwork. In this article, the author traces recurrent metaphors in discussions about gender transitioning with a focus on selected articles recently published in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, particularly an essay authored by David Bell (2020) entitled “First Do No Harm.” The author focuses on three images—contagion, the naturality of gender, and amputation—to ask, what do these apparently disparate signifiers reveal about the anxieties in the field?

This study explored the experiences of trans men in the UK. The focus of this article is the relevant findings and implications related to the ‘Transitioning Process’. The findings presented here form part of a larger qualitative investigation of the experiences of 11 transgendered individuals using a grounded theory approach. Two major themes emerged in terms of the transitioning process: (a) accessing support; and (b) transitioning requires strength and resilience. Within these themes is the interplay of other factors, including: having systems in place; seeing positive outcomes; specific support; others’ positive reactions; and conversely: power imbalances; fear; passing; and others’ negative reactions. There are specific implications for psychological practice, including improving accessibility, flexibility of treatment and longer-term psychological care. The study has also uncovered important themes around gender identity, which we hope may guide future research.

Streszczenie:

The purpose of this project was to develop a grant that, if funded, would guide aged-out foster youth to become independent and self-sustaining young adults who make a positive contribution to our society. The grant proposal contains a literature review of the plight of foster youth; they encounter a plethora of issues during the course of their lives. They are disproportionately represented in areas such as crime, homelessness, mental illness, lack of educational achievement, unemployment and substance abuse. The proposed program would guide the youth concerning these issues.

The chosen funder was the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The group home would serve 12 multiethnic male aged-out foster youth over a 3-year period. Services provided would include weekly mentoring, weekly support groups, education and career planning, health and mental health, substance abuse prevention and treatment, and skills development needed for transitioning to independent living. The actual submission of the grant application was not a requirement of the thesis project.

The transgendered community has become more widely recognized and discussed in recent years, however our understanding of the lived experience of transgendered individuals is still underdeveloped. This research aims to increase our understanding of the experiences of transgendered individuals, while also providing suggestions for mental health practitioners who work with transgender clients. Previous research has suggested social support improves resiliency to mental health problems (Grossman, D'Augelli, & Frank, 2011). This research examines the effect a trans individuals transition has on their significant relationships through a qualitative research design. Four individuals with varying gender identities were interviewed for this research, and thirteen distinct themes were ascertained through analysis of the transcripts.

This thesis analyses the violence perpetrated against transgender people. It scrutinizes the concept of transgender and the important role of transitioning. It looks at the essentialist and social constructionist debate and its relation to transgender. In this thesis, I will advocate a theory of violence in which violence is understood as structural. I will advocate bringing the lived experience of transgender people to the foreground in theorizing about embodiment. Hereby, I will especially focus on discursive violence and the violation of human rights. I will relate transgender and the importance of transitioning to DSM’s understanding of Gender Identity Disorder. Consequently, I will uncover DSM’s subtle misogyny and transphobia and argue that it perpetrates discursive violence against transgender people. In addition, I will scrutinize the direct and indirect ways it violates the human rights of transgender people. Finally, the thesis will discuss the suggestions the Hammarberg report has made in order to improve the human rights situation of transgender persons.

Streszczenie:
This research is the first ethnographic study of male to female trans everyday life in Myanmar. My fieldwork took place at the end of military rule and as the state began transitioning to democracy. I focus on the constraints faced by trans in Yangon, and how they overcome them. Within the natal family, trans typically experience multiple forms of violence, anguish and alienation. Negative experience in the family is in large part a result of anadè, the Burmese rules of civility. For trans, the social consequences of anadè are more pressing problems than state repression. As a result of repression within the family, many trans exit in order to live openly. Others maintain a masculine appearance, passing as gender normative and thereby do not disrupt their family and work lives. Exit is made possible through entry into units of trans kinship. Trans kinship is formed through multifaceted relations between trans mothers and daughters, husbands and wives and spirits and humans, thereby creating an extensive network of trans space within the interstices of the state. A key feature of trans kinship is the re-creation of anadè in a changed form that supports trans ways of being, sex and intimacy. In order to enter the Yangon trans world, intimacy was a necessary element of my ethnographic practice.

Streszczenie:
Since the 17th century there has been a proliferation of discourse on sex and a host of sexual identities have been surfaced. One such sexuality that is particularly marginalised is transsexuality; central to which is the management of the transsexual self. The critical study of such practices has often been neglected in favour of ‘mainstream’ research on transsexuality’s deviance, aetiology and treatment. Furthermore, internet-based resources have been identified as a key site for the management of the transsexual self. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the constructions of transitioning in popular websites aimed at transsexuals and significant others, family, friends and allies of transgendered persons (SOFFAs). A search strategy was adapted to select the most popular websites for analysis. A discourse analysis – guided by Parker’s (1992) 20 ‘steps’ – was conducted on 12 webpages. The construction of transitioning was dominated by biomedicine and the ‘psy’ professions. Due to these hegemonic powers the transsexual identity was associated with distress and thus a number of technologies of self – particularly medical intervention – were ‘needed’ for the management of the transsexual self. This construction spoke to the rights and health of transsexuals but also appeared to limit their freedom and serve capitalist gain rather than the interests of trans persons. Uncovering these power dynamics may have important implications for the Standards of Care, the controversial status of gender identity disorder in the DSM and allowing for the creation of alternative power strategies which may permit more freedom in the care of the gendered self.

AbstractThe concept of “green growth” is gaining global momentum as a means of mitigating the environmental impact of human activities. However, transitioning to a green economy requires new green skills and a shift in mindset. Empowering women intentionally and strategically, particularly in Africa, can unlock the continent’s untapped potential and drive economic growth due to their significant labour force. Green reskilling is a crucial aspect of the green economy as it promotes gender equality and empowers women, leading to poverty alleviation and economic growth. This chapter underscores the importance of green reskilling for African women and the need to create gender-sensitive policies and strategies for climate change mitigation at all levels—local, regional, and national. By doing so, women can play a more active role in driving the transition to a greener and more sustainable future for Africa.

AbstractThis chapter discusses the role of universities and government in supporting the transition to online teaching, describes the challenges and reflections of academic staff on this transition to online teaching, their research efficiency during the lockdown, and their satisfaction and comfortability with the online teaching experience in general and in the future. This empirical study uses a cross-sectional online survey of faculty members’ experience transitioning to online teaching at UAE University (N = 175 of faculty members). The chapter suggests that the UAEU case study could be treated as a successful example of the urgent transition to online learning and teaching since the vast majority of the faculty members were satisfied with their online teaching experience. Furthermore, results even speak for improved research efficiency, irrespective of gender.
