The objective of the present paper is to apply an adaptive hybrid two-frame particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) technique for measuring the flow characteristics of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with five blades. Compared to the conventional particle image velocimetry method, the hybrid PTV technique increases the spatial resolution and measurement accuracy significantly while reducing the computation time. For each of four different blade phases of 0, 18, 36, and 54 deg, 400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranging from the trailing edge to a two propeller diameter (D) downstream location. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the trailing vorticity and the viscous wake are formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. The vorticity contours at each phase angle show that the tip vortices are produced periodically. The slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region up to about x= 0.5 D downstream. Thereafter the unstable oscillation occurs due to the separation of tip vortex from the wake sheet behind the maximum contraction point. As the tip vortex evolves downstream, its strength is reduced due to turbulent diffusion, viscous dissipation, and active mixing between tip vortices and adjacent wake flow. The technique presented here can be readily extended to investigate the nominal and effective wake distribution as well as the details of the flow field fore and aft of a rotating propeller behind a ship model.

This study examined the eye movement patterns of 317 elementary students across reading conditions (audio-assisted reading (AR) and reading-only (R)) and text types (fiction and non-fiction) and identified eye movement parameters that predict their literal comprehension (LC) and inferential comprehension (IC). Participants, randomly assigned to either reading condition and either text type, answered questions assessing their LC and IC. Average fixation duration (AFD), total fixation duration (TFD), and scanpath length were used as eye movement parameters. The main effects of age were observed on all parameters, along with interaction effects between age and reading condition on TFD and scanpath length. These results indicate that children employ different reading strategies, depending on reading modalities and text types. When controlling for age, TFD had a positive impact on the LC of both text types in the AR, while in the R, it had a negative effect on the IC of both text types. Longer scanpaths predicted the IC of fiction in the AR; the LC and IC of non-fiction under the AR; and the LC of non-fiction within the R. AFD had a negative influence on the IC of fiction in the AR, as well as on the LC and IC of non-fiction in the AR, and the LC of non-fiction under the R. These findings highlight the importance of selecting appropriate reading strategies, based on reading modality and text type, to enhance reading comprehension. This study offers guidance for educators when providing reading instruction to school-age children.

With the gradual increase in spacecraft in orbit, space debris monitoring has become the key to the sustainable development of space missions. A staring debris detection method is proposed for high-density stars with long tails. In order to solve the problem that the gray level of a long trailing image is not stable and continuous, rectangular fitting is used to complete the aggregation of the trailing image and reduce the influence of noise on the trailing information. The occluded state of the target was analyzed, the feature calculation method was improved, the semi-occluded scene was statistically classified, the fully connected network (FCN) based finite point feature was accurately classified, and the semi-occluded image was extracted. Based on the extracted semi-occluded image, the inter-frame association can improve the success probability of target association and realize the effective detection and tracking of debris. The detection accuracy was tested for the changing inter-frame interval and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and the relationship between the index parameters and key parameters was given. Compared with previous literature, this design can detect and track the occluded target with a detection rate of more than 90% and a false alarm rate of less than 10%.

Variable camber wing technology stands out as the most promising morphing technology currently available in green aviation. Despite the ongoing advancements in smart materials and compliant structures, they still fall short in terms of driving force, power, and speed, rendering mechanical structures based on kinematics the preferred choice for large long-range civilian aircraft. In line with this principle, this paper introduces a linkage-based variable camber trailing edge design approach. Covering coordinated design, internal skeleton design, flexible skin design, and drive structure design, the method leverages a two-dimensional supercritical airfoil to craft a seamless, continuous two-dimensional wing full-size variable camber trailing edge structure, boasting a 2.7 m span and 4.3 m chord. Given the significant changes in aerodynamic load direction, ground tests under cruise load utilize a tracking-loading system based on tape and lever. Results indicate that the designed single-degree-of-freedom Watt I mechanism and Stephenson III drive mechanism adeptly accommodate the slender trailing edge of the supercritical airfoil. Under a maximum cruise vertical aerodynamic load of 17,072 N, the structure meets strength requirements when deflected to 5°. The research in this paper can provide some insights into the engineering design of variable camber wings.

The quality of all pressure data reflects improvements in the Glasgow University BVI facility and in the method of reducing and presenting data. Pressure histories clearly track the passage of a vortex-associated disturbance across the aerofoil. Tracking this disturbance permits an examination of vortex convection velocities, and also allows for a correlation between vortex trailing edge passage and force and moment perturbations.

AbstractThis essay tells the story of how the War on Crime helped remake American crime fiction in the 1960s and 1970s. Amid starkly racialized public anxieties about rising crime rates and urban uprisings, Lyndon B. Johnson officially launched the War on Crime in 1965. The cultural logic of Johnson's crime war infiltrated various kinds of crime writing in the ensuing decade. Tracking the crime war's influence on the police procedurals of Joseph Wambaugh; the Black radical novels of Sam Greenlee, John A. Williams, and John Edgar Wideman; and the vigilante fiction of Donald Goines and Brian Garfield, I argue that crime fiction in the War-on-Crime era emerged as a key cultural site for managing divergent political responses to a regime of social control that worked by criminalizing both race and revolt. By studying how novelists responded to the formative years of the War on Crime, we can begin to understand the complex role that literature played in alternately contesting and abetting the postwar transformation of the United States into a carceral state.

The number of star points and the accuracy of star centroid extraction are the key factors that affect the performance of the star sensor under high dynamic conditions. The motion blur results in the star point trailing, which consequently leads to the decline of star centroid extraction accuracy and in some cases lead to extraction failure. In order to improve the dynamic performance of the star sensor, in this work, we propose a real-time star trailing removal method based on fast blur kernel estimation. First, in order to minimize the influence of noise on parameter estimation, we use principal component analysis (PCA) in the dual-frequency spectrum domain to estimate the angle of blur kernel. In addition, an adjustable weighting method is proposed to estimate the length of blur kernel. So, we are able to quickly estimate the high-precision blur kernel based on a single degraded image. Moreover, an area filtering method based on the hyper-Laplacian prior recovery algorithm is also proposed. This algorithm quickly reconstructs the star points in the tracking windows and effectively removes the star point tailing in real time. The computational efficiency of the proposed algorithm is 5 times superior to the traditional method and 15 times superior to the existing accelerated iterative method. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm removes the trailing star quickly and effectively, under low SNR. In addition, the proposed method effectively improves the number of extracted star points and the accuracies of star centroids.

Abstract Synthetic tracking (ST) has emerged as a potent technique for observing fast-moving near-Earth objects (NEOs), offering enhanced detection sensitivity and astrometric accuracy by avoiding trailing loss. This approach also empowers small telescopes to use prolonged integration times to achieve high sensitivity for NEO surveys and follow-up observations. In this study, we present the outcomes of ST observations conducted with Pomona College’s 1 m telescope at the Table Mountain Facility and JPL’s robotic telescopes at the Sierra Remote Observatory. The results showcase astrometric accuracy statistics comparable to stellar astrometry, irrespective of an object’s rate of motion, and the capability to detect faint asteroids beyond 20.5th magnitude using 11 inch telescopes. Furthermore, we detail the technical aspects of data processing, including the correction of differential chromatic refraction in the atmosphere and accurate timing for image stacking, which contribute to achieving precise astrometry. We also provide compelling examples that showcase the robustness of ST even when asteroids closely approach stars or bright satellites cause disturbances. Moreover, we illustrate the proficiency of ST in recovering NEO candidates with highly uncertain ephemerides. As a glimpse of the potential of NEO surveys utilizing small robotic telescopes with ST, we present significant statistics from our NEO survey conducted for testing purposes. These findings underscore the promise and effectiveness of ST as a powerful tool for observing fast-moving NEOs, offering valuable insights into their trajectories and characteristics. Overall, the adoption of ST stands to revolutionize fast-moving NEO observations for planetary defense and studying these celestial bodies.

Purpose The choke flutter is a fluid-structure interaction that can lead to the failure of fan or compressor blade in turbojet engines. In ultra high bypass ratio (UHBR) fans, the choke flutter appears at part-speed regimes and at low or negative incidence when a strong shock-wave chokes the blade to blade channel. The purpose of this study is to locate the main excitation sources and improving the understanding of the different work exchange mechanisms. This work contributes to avoiding deficient and dangerous fan design. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, an UHBR fan is analyzed using a time-linearized Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation solver to investigate the choke flutter. The steady-state and the imposed vibration (inter blade phase angle, reduced frequency and mode shape) are selected to be in choke flutter situation. Superposition principle induced by the linearization allow to decompose the blade in numerous small subsections to track the contribution of each local vibration to the global damping. All simulations have been performed on a two-dimensional blade to blade extraction. Findings Result analysis points to a restricted number of excitation sources at the trailing edge which induce a large part of the work exchange in a limited region of the airfoil. Main phenomena suspected are the shock-wave motion and the shock-wave/boundary layer interaction. Originality/value An original excitation source tracking methodology allowed by the linearized calculation is addressed and applied to a UHBR fan test case.

A problem of tracking surface shape-shifting extended target by using gray scale pixels on optical image is considered. The measurement with amplitude information (AI) is available to the proposed method. The target is regarded as a convex hemispheric object, and the amplitude distribution of the extended target is represented by a solid radial function. The Gaussian process (GP) is applied and the covariance function of GP is modified to fit the convex hemispheric shape. The points to be estimated on the target surface are selected reasonably in the hemispheric space at the azimuth and pitch directions. Analytical representation of the estimated target extent is provided and the recursive process is implemented by the extended Kalman filter (EKF). In order to demonstrate the algorithm’s ability of tracking complex shaped targets, a trailing target characterized by two feature parameters is simulated and the two feature parameters are extracted with the estimated points. The simulations verify the validity of the proposed method with compared to classical algorithms.

This paper reports progress in the numerical simulations of movement and the coalescence of two neighbor bubbles (leading and trailing bubble) in a reciprocally stirred liquid flow field. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the volume-of fluid (VOF) method for tracking the interface between the bubble and the liquid flow. A dynamic mesh method was used to predict the gas-liquid flow in a two-dimensional foaming tank. Results indicate that the motion and merge behavior of the bubbles is dominantly influenced by the initial locations and the sizes of the bubbles as well as by the surface tension, while the reciprocating effect is insignificant.

Gig work mediated through online platforms has received much recent attention. We find only one sector--the transportation services sector--in which there is unambiguous evidence of substantial and rapidly growing gig activity. A challenge for tracking and understanding the rise in gig activity is that core household surveys are missing the recent overall rise in self-employment that is apparent in administrative and private sector transactions data. We show that this limitation of available household survey data is evident even in the transportation services sector, where the growth in self-employment activity since 2013 has been exponential.

Abstract This article explores the skilled arts of tracking and gathering as methods for noticing and theorizing multispecies landscapes in the Kalahari Desert, Botswana. Tracking is typically used to describe a practice of following animals, usually for hunting, whereas gathering primarily refers to the collection of plant and fungal materials. The author presents a case in which these terms have been scrambled during long-term ethnographic field research. The author and his interlocutors tracked the Kalahari desert truffle, an experience that demonstrates how aspects of tracking extend to gathering, but also how the practices are attentive to the movements of landscapes more broadly. This form of tracking attends to multiple spatial and temporal movements that include nonanimals and other nonhumans. It represents a way of noticing the assemblages of more-than-human relations that make up landscapes. These convergences, first identified through tracking, are then explored through the more distributed analytic of gathering. Inspired by Ursula LeGuin’s call to describe stories of gatherers and collectives in her “Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction,” the article argues that thinking tracking through the gathering analytic helps articulate a “carrier bag approach” for understanding landscapes through the gatherings of relations with which they emerge.

Imaging and tracking performance suffers from the mismatch between the model and the measurements in an adaptive radio tomographic imaging system. In this paper, a model-based approach is reviewed and a new adaptive elliptical weighting model is proposed, in which the coverage of ellipse and the voxels weightings can adaptively match the actual environments, and the Savitzky–Golay smoothing filter is presented to eliminate the influence of measurement noise and multipath interference. In our proposed model, the optimal coverage of ellipse and weightings can be obtained from voxel weightings distribution inside the ellipse and pseudo-position area and trailing phenomenon. Finally, the development efforts are evaluated and validated with real experiments conducted in indoor environments for a moving target. This paper investigates the connection between counterfactuality and stereotypicality in direct speech representation. In Monika Fludernik’s theory of schematic language representation, quotations typify rather than reproduce, and typicality coincides with stereotypical expressivity in the form discourse particles, among other features. By distinguishing hypothetical speech proper from the more general concept of typifying direct speech, we can see that in fiction hypothetical speech is not always stereotypically expressive. In conversational storytelling, discourse markers serve the functions of source-tracking, emplotment, and expressing the quoter’s emotions and evaluation. I discuss reasons why fiction differs from conversational storytelling in this respect. Fludernik’s treatment of discourse markers or ‘typicality markers’ in direct speech representation is here complemented with Bakhtinian notions of dual expressiveness, speech genres, and the responsive quality of utterances. The arguments presented are illustrated by passages from the fiction of Carol Shields, Peter Bichsel, and Junot Díaz.

Satellite linked radio transmitting (SLRT) tags provide long-term, high accuracy, near real-time tracking data for marine wildlife. Adult white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias Linnaeus, 1758) in the northeastern Pacific at both Guadalupe Island, Mexico and Southeast Farallon Island, USA were tagged with SLRT oval and inline finmout tags. These tags provided up to 7.4 yrs of tracking data. A previous study showed structural dorsal fin damage for SLRT tagged juvenile and subadult white sharks off South Africa. Sharks tagged in the northeastern Pacific were resighted between 1 and 11 yrs post tagging and included 10 adults and 2 subadults. Sharks that were resighted did not exhibit significant fin deformation, although in one case the oval finmount tag did cause bending of the dorsal fin due to tag shape, weight, and placement of the tag on the dorsal fin. Four inline tags came off after deployments of at least 2.2 to 3.7 yrs (based on date of last message received), and two of these caused a tear to the trailing edge of the dorsal fin upon release. Overall, SLRT tags provided long-term tracking data and there was no apparent impact on the behavior or migration cycles of the sharks. Serious dorsal fin deformation seems to occur in the case of juvenile and subadult white sharks where the fin is rapidly growing and thus for tracking juvenile white sharks, alternate methods should be considered.

One of the striking aspects of the trenchant legacy of Michael Fried’s ‘Art and Objecthood’ is its status as a piece of art criticism. Widely perceived as difficult and personal, philosophical and explicatory, doxa or sermon, the essay stands out. To explore its singularity, this article compares Fried’s conception of the period criticism of 18th-century French painting in his book Absorption and Theatricality: Painting and Beholder in the Age of Diderot (1980) and the method of criticism enacted in ‘Art and Objecthood’ (1967) which he saw as connected. The author pursues this and other crossings between Fried’s art historical writings and art criticism, tracking it to an extended endnote in Fried’s Menzel’s Realism: Art and Embodiment in Nineteenth-Century Berlin (2002). ‘Art and Objecthood’ is a key essay in this story aimed at Fried’s thinking about criticism, its history, theory and practice. Doing this matters because it puts the critic in a particular relation to art and to Fried’s idea of an ‘ontologically prior relationship between painting and the beholder’.

This article explores recent uses of the tracking shot in various media. Examples drawn from television, video games and video art reveal that recent audiovisual media have frequently used a particular kind of tracking shot that follows an individual through a complex environment. This article argues that this tracking shot contributes to an aesthetic of stealth, that is, a perceptual attunement to notions of imperceptibility and secrecy. The stealth tracking shot can thus be seen as one of the aesthetic principles that articulate discourses of securitisation. The argument proceeds in three steps. First, the article shows that this specific use of the tracking shot takes inspiration from third-person video games. An analysis of the stealth game Splinter Cell: Blacklist (2013) shows how the mobile ‘following camera’ allows the viewer to perceive the avatar in his or her environment. Then, in an analysis of the unbroken tracking shot in True Detective (2014), it is demonstrated how this kind of tracking shot contributes to a reformulation of the notions of law enforcement underlying crime fiction. Specifically, the tracking shot is related to the notion of stealth democracy. Finally, the article considers Hito Steyerl’s video ‘Guards’ to show that the aesthetic principles of stealth operate not only in individual media objects but more generally in public spaces and institutions such as museums and art galleries. To conclude, the article situates the stealth tracking shot in a more general consideration of the politicality of media aesthetics.

Flash fiction or what is better known in Indonesia as "mini fiction" or also "mini prose" is not a form of work that arises as a result of dealing with limited space today but also has something to do with the level of literacy at a certain time. It is not surprising that the publication of early prose in Indonesia, which at that time was still under colonial rule, namely in the mid-19th century, was essentially similar to the “fiksi mini” that has been developing in Indonesia in recent years. Thus, this paper is an attempt to straighten out and trace the dynamics of the flash fictions which have been published in Indonesia since more than a century ago. Because of this tracking will, reading of the flash fictions that have been published is a must. From the data obtained, several “fiksi mini” were used which were clearly able to confirm the existence of flash fictions which could be said to have been ahead of its time. Facts like this are results that are worth caring about considering that the present atmosphere has existed in the past. This kind of literary reality reaffirms the understanding that literary works in particular, whatever their form, have the power to enter the future unconsciously or not on purpose. In form, what happens is the tacit proclamation of a genre, for example, while in content it is usually concerned with some sort of natural forecast or prediction.

Neutrophils respond to invading bacteria by adopting a polarized morphology, migrating in the correct direction, and engulfing the bacteria. How neutrophils establish and precisely orient this polarity toward pathogens remains unclear. Here we report that in resting neutrophils, the ERM (ezrin, radixin, and moesin) protein moesin in its active form (phosphorylated and membrane bound) prevented cell polarization by inhibiting the small GTPases Rac, Rho, and Cdc42. Attractant-induced activation of myosin phosphatase deactivated moesin at the prospective leading edge to break symmetry and establish polarity. Subsequent translocation of moesin to the trailing edge confined the formation of a prominent pseudopod directed toward pathogens and prevented secondary pseudopod formation in other directions. Therefore, both moesin-mediated inhibition and its localized deactivation by myosin phosphatase are essential for neutrophil polarization and effective neutrophil tracking of pathogens.

The development of a control strategy appropriate for the suppression of aeroelastic vibration of a two-dimensional nonlinear wing section based on iterative learning control (ILC) theory is described. Structural stiffness in pitch degree of freedom is represented by nonlinear polynomials. The uncontrolled aeroelastic model exhibits limit cycle oscillations beyond a critical value of the free-stream velocity. Using a single trailing-edge control surface as the control input, a ILC law under alignment condition is developed to ensure convergence of state tracking error. A novel Barrier Lyapunov Function (BLF) is incorporated in the proposed Barrier Composite Energy Function (BCEF) approach. Numerical simulation results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the control strategy toward suppressing aeroelastic vibration in the presence of parameter uncertainties and triangular, sinusoidal, and graded gust loads.

This paper presents a navigation strategy for a platoon of n non-holonomic mobile robots with a time-varying spacing policy between each pair of successive robots at the platoon, such that a safe trailing distance is maintained at any speed, avoiding the robots getting too close to each other. It is intended that all the vehicles in the formation follow the trajectory described by the leader robot, which is generated by bounded input velocities. To establish a chain formation among the vehicles, it is required that, for each pair of successive vehicles, the (i+1)-th one follows the trajectory executed by the former i-th one, with a delay of τ(t) units of time. An observer is proposed to estimate the trajectory, velocities, and positions of the i-th vehicle, delayed τ(t) units of time, consequently generating the desired path for the (i+1)-th vehicle, avoiding numerical approximations of the velocities, rendering robustness against noise and corrupted or missing data as well as to external disturbances. Besides the time-varying gap, a constant-time gap is used to get a secure trailing distance between each two successive robots. The presented platoon formation strategy is analyzed and proven by using Lyapunov theory, concluding asymptotic convergence for the posture tracking between the (i+1)-th robot and the virtual reference provided by the observer that corresponds to the i-th robot. The strategy is evaluated by numerical simulations and real-time experiments.

This article presents a select survey of the rendering of personal names in translation into English from European languages with different scripts from the turn of the twentieth century to the early twenty-first century. Works of prose fiction were chosen from Czech and Icelandic, which use characters that are not part of the English alphabet. Their original publication dates are from the middle of the nineteenth to the late twentieth century, with translations trailing by years or even decades. The authors of the original works were very well known and in some cases Nobel Prize laureates. This gives assurance that their works attracted good translators and, in some cases, multiple translators. The hypothesis was that over the course of more than a century, there has been a growing tendency to respect the original spellings of personal names in translations – that is, to employ the source language’s script, even when the literary works belong to relatively peripheral European cultures. The explanations for this include increased cultural contacts, the expansion of what has traditionally been called world literature, and internet resources.

The pulsating characteristics in turbulent flow are very important physical quantities. There are many studies focused on the temporal characteristics of pulsation. However, the spatial distribution of temporal states with pulsations rarely receives attention. Therefore, the pulsation tracking network (PTN) method is proposed to track the pulsating characteristics of turbulence. Based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation result, the PTN is arranged in a specific region of the flow domain. The fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method is used for time-frequency conversion. As shown in the example of trailing-edge vortex-shedding flow over NACA0009 hydrofoil, important pulsation quantities, including the total pulsation intensity, dominant frequencies, amplitude of frequencies, and the phase and phase difference, can be obtained with a high spatial resolution. The source, reason and attenuation of the vortex-shedding frequency fvs and the 2 fvs frequency caused by vortex-interaction are well indicated. The dominant regions of fvs and 2 fvs are shown and analysed. The propagation and attenuation of vortex-shedding induced pulsation are understood in detail. Based on the comparison against traditional analysis, PTN is found to function as a good supplement for the CFD post-processing by tracking unknown temporal and spatial characteristics. These findings represent a potential breakthrough in terms of solving actual pulsation-excited flow problems.

The digital era has brought with it a shift in the field of literary editing in terms of the amount and kind of textual variation that can reasonably be annotated by editors. However, questions remain about how far readers engage with textual variants, especially minor ones such as small-scale changes to punctuation. In this study we present an eye-tracking experiment investigating reader sensitivity to variations in surface textual features of prose fiction. We monitored eye movements while participants read textual variants from Dickens and James, hypothesising that readers may pay more attention to lexical rather than punctuation changes. We found longer reading times for both types, but only lexical changes also increased reading times for the rest of the sentence. In addition, eye-movement behaviour and conscious ability to report changes were highly correlated. We discuss the implications for how such methods might be applied to questions of “literary” significance and textual processing.

Activity, mobility, growth rates, and space use of 48 hatchling spur-thighed tortoises, Testudo graeca, were monitored over a period of 8 months, from emergence from the nest in September until May. Individuals were followed by means of thread trailing and radio tracking. Overall average distance moved was 4.42 m/day and average home-range size was 13.7 m2. Hatchlings were active from emergence until mid-December, exhibited discontinuous hibernation until mid-February, and reached highest activity and mobility values in April–May. Overall, mobility varied significantly with daily solar radiation values and maximum temperature, and was significantly dependent on body condition in winter. Body size and mass had no influence on individual performance, and a significant proportion of variance among individuals remained unexplained. Little growth occurred in autumn and body condition decreased steadily, increasing only from February onwards. Growth rates increased in March–April. No individual differences in growth rates were detected, initial body size being the main determinant of body size after 8 months.

Currently, systems installed on large-scale aerospace structures are manually equipped by trained operators. To improve current methods, an automated system that ensures quality control and process adherence could be used. This work presents a mobile robot capable of autonomously inspecting aircraft systems and providing feedback to workers. The mobile robot can follow operators and localise the position of the inspection using a thermal camera and 2D lidars. While moving, a depth camera collects 3D data about the system being installed. The in-process monitoring algorithm uses this information to check if the system has been correctly installed. Finally, based on these measurements, indications are shown on a screen to provide feedback to the workers. The performance of this solution has been validated in a laboratory environment, replicating a trailing edge equipping task. During testing, the tracking and localisation systems have proven to be reliable. The in-process monitoring system was also found to provide accurate feedback to the operators. Overall, the results show that the solution is promising for industrial applications.

Abstract This work addresses the problem of developing control algorithms for the control of the aerodynamic lift of wind turbine blades using air injection, taking into account disturbances caused by turbulent perturbations. For this, a test bench is used where the lift of a 2D blade section in a wind tunnel can be controlled by a set of micro-jets close to the trailing edge. Through a continuous, local identification of the lift variations a model-free control that does not need any prior knowledge of the system is proposed. It allows the control of the flow of the micro-jets and stabilizes the lift around a tracking reference. The ability of the proposed control algorithm to track the lift reference when subjected to external perturbations, i.e., gusts, is discussed. In particular, this work demonstrates that the lift can be set to particular values using the proposed control strategy, and can be re-stabilized to pre-gust lift conditions. Experimental results illustrate globally the feasibility of such a control.

Abstract We use eye tracking to investigate the attention readers pay to different textual features to determine their significance in the appreciation of prose fiction. Previous research examined attention allocation to lexical and punctuation variants, and the impact on reading dynamics for the remainder of the text, demonstrating that readers notice both kinds of variants but assign less value to the latter (Carrol, Conklin, Guy, & Scott, 2016). Here, in two experiments, we examine two conditions that may affect attention allocation: We investigate the influence of reader expertise (Experiment 1) and whether performance is influenced by a task-specific “spot-the-difference” effect (Experiment 2). We found that expertise plays little role in readers’ greater sensitivity to lexical rather than punctuation changes, and that the advantage for lexical changes persisted when the time interval between exposures is increased. These results confirm earlier findings: that small-scale features may not possess the creative significance predicated of them by critics and text-editors.

Espionage, surveillance and clandestine operations by secret agencies and governments were something of an East–West obsession in the second half of the twentieth century, a fact reflected in literature and film. In the twenty-first century, concerns of the Cold War and the threat of Communism have been rearticulated in the wake of 9/11. Under the rubric of ‘terror’ attacks, the discourses of security and surveillance are now framed within an increasingly global context. As this article illustrates, surveillance fiction written for young people engages with the cultural and political tropes that reflect a new social order that is different from the Cold War era, with its emphasis on spies, counter espionage, brainwashing and psychological warfare. While these tropes are still evident in much recent literature, advances in technology have transformed the means of tracking, profiling and accumulating data on individuals’ daily activities. Little Brother, The Hunger Games and Article 5 reflect the complex relationship between the real and the imaginary in the world of surveillance and, as this paper discusses, raise moral and ethical issues that are important questions for young people in our age of security.

Rotating detonation rocket engines (RDREs) exhibit various unsteady phenomena, including modal transitions, that significantly affect their operation, performance and stability. The dynamics of the detonation waves are studied during a descending modal transition (DMT) where four co-rotating detonations waves decrease to three in a gaseous methane-oxygen RDRE. Detonation wave tracking is applied to capture, visualize and analyze unsteady, 3D detonation wave dynamics data within the combustion chamber of the RDRE. The mechanism of a descending modal transition is the failure of a detonation wave in the RDRE, and in this study, the failing wave is identified along with its failure time. The regions upstream of each relative detonation show the mixture and flow-field parameters that drive detonation failure. Additionally, it is shown that descending modal transitions encompass multiple phases of detonation decay and recovery with respect to RDREs. The results show high upstream pressure, heat release and temperature, coupled with insufficient propellants, lead to detonation wave failure and non-recovery of the trailing detonation wave during a descending modal transition. The ultimate goal of this research study is to perform continuous rather than sequential movements of prismatic joints for effective motion of a snake robot with prismatic joints in a complex terrain. We present herein a control method for robotic step climbing. This method is composed of two parts: the first involves the shift reference generator that generates the joint motion for climbing a step, and the other is use of the trajectory tracking controller, which generates the joint motion for the head to track the target trajectory. In this method, prismatic joints are divided into those that are directly controlled for climbing a step and those that are represented as redundancies. By directly controlling the link length, it is possible to prevent the trailing part from back motion when climbing a step, and to avoid a singular configuration in the parts represented as redundancies. A snake robot that has rotational and prismatic joints and can move in three-dimensions was developed, and the effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated by experiments using this robot. In the experiment, it was confirmed that the proposed method realizes the step climbing, and the link length limitation using the sigmoid function works effectively.

Abstract The performance of pulsed coherent Doppler lidar in estimating aircraft trailing wake vortices by scanning across the aircraft flight track is evaluated using Monte Carlo lidar simulations of a simple vortex pair in both a nonturbulent and turbulent environment. The performance estimates are based on maximum likelihood estimates of aircraft wake vortex parameters and provide a measure of the ability of the lidar to detect and track wake vortices under the best possible conditions. Two aircraft types are considered: the Boeing 737 and the Boeing 747. Rigorous error analyses are produced by comparing the estimated parameters from numerical simulations of raw lidar data with the known input parameters of the simulation. It is shown that the probability density functions for the estimates are approximately Gaussian and the bias is very small. The main source of the bias was determined to be the movement of the vortex during the lidar scan. The estimation error is increased by the effects of a background turbulent velocity field. The trade-off between lidar pulse energy and pulse repetition frequency for the standard condition of constant laser power is also presented. It is shown that these maximum likelihood estimates provide accurate detection and tracking of the key vortex parameters for a simple vortex model, with and without background turbulence.
