Streszczenie:
Presented research comes up with results representing a role of speed-force and timing parameters in four start types at the track of 7.5 m and 10 m distance. Eighteen performance male swimmers (age 23.4±2.1), specialists in sprint event, participated in this study. We noticed the highest measured vertical force in swimming starts with rearward stretch (ZŠSN, AŠSN) in both track distances. For the horizontal force in the tracks of both distances we noticed the highest values of maximum force in grab starts (ZŠS, ZŠSN), but the average values were the highest in the track starts (AŠSN, AŠS). From the timing parameters on the starting block, the shortest reaction time was measured in swimming starts with rearward stretch (ZŠSN, AŠSN). The shortest movement and starting reaction time from the starting block was measured in the swimming start with rearward stretch (ZŠSN, AŠSN) in both track distances. The shortest time of a flight and gliding phase for the track of 7.5 m and 10 m distance we measured in the track start with rearward. Difference between the first and the second fastest time in the track of 7.5 m distance to 0,02 s, but the track of 10 m distance was doubled. On the basis of these results we recommend to swimmer sprinters to use mainly the track start with rearward. The statistical significance of differences in speed-force parameters pointed on the differences between the four types of swimming starts. In all types of the starts were shown close relations between the track time for 7.5 m and 10 m distance, horizontal force parameters and the time of the flight and gliding phase.

This study compared the conventional track and a new one-handed track start in elite age group swimmers to determine if the new technique had biomechanical implications on dive performance. Five male and seven female GB national qualifiers participated (mean ± SD: age 16.7 ± 1.9 years, stretched stature 1.76 ± 0.8 m, body mass 67.4 ± 7.9 kg) and were assigned to a control group (n = 6) or an intervention group (n = 6) that learned the new one-handed dive technique. All swimmers underwent a 4-week intervention comprising 12 ± 3 thirty-minute training sessions. Video cameras synchronized with an audible signal and timing suite captured temporal and kinematic data. A portable force plate and load cell handrail mounted to a swim starting block collected force data over 3 trials of each technique. A MANCOVA identified Block Time (BT), Flight Time (FT), Peak Horizontal Force of the lower limbs (PHF) and Horizontal Velocity at Take-off (Vx) as covariates. During the 10-m swim trial, significant differences were found in Time to 10 m (TT10m), Total Time (TT), Peak Vertical Force (PVF), Flight Distance (FD), and Horizontal Velocity at Take-off (Vx) (p < .05). Results indicated that the conventional track start method was faster over 10 m, and therefore may be seen as a superior start after a short intervention. During training, swimmers and coaches should focus on the most statistically significant dive performance variables: peak horizontal force and velocity at take-off, block and flight time.

Streszczenie:
During swimming competitions starting from the block-start platform, a potential hypothesis was noticed, through an active multimodal process, which can make the swimming start efficient, especially in the case of sprint races, by improving the propulsive force parameters of the inferior limbs. The swimming start research from interdisciplinary perspective: biomechanical, kinematic, informational and statistical can consolidate and improve the specific technique in accordance with the abilities and psycho-motor qualities of the swimmers. The present study is based on an experiment where the spatial-temporal and kinematic parameters were processed with the help of a Dartfish program. The evolution of parameters is researched as a result of a motor training program with the purpose to increase the propulsive force off the block-start. The improvement of spatial-temporal parameters influences the performance and evolution of technical parameters. Initial and final recordings were made on an MLD Station Evo5 and MLD software MuskelLeistungs Diagnose, fromSPSport, SPSportdiagnosegeräte, in order to evaluate the force, the power and the propulsive force. The argumentation of the experimental research is based on the statement: “the spatial characteristics of the motions and actions can be studied for themselves as parameters, characteristics or as a reference method for defining other characteristics, such as velocity or push-off force [1]. The main purpose of this study is to identify the influences of the specific start training upon the force improvement and kick power of the support foot from the block-start, during the classic track start. Given that the track start technique is the same as the one of the kick start executed from the international block-start of Omega, OSB11, developed in 2009, one assumes that the improvement of the classic track start leads by default to the improvement of the kick start. Lack of training to practice this type of start leads to deficient use during competitions, thus obtaining poor performances. There are no kick block-starts in Romania in order to train high performance athletes participating in international competitions and as a consequence, poor results are obtained at sprint races. One assumes that training for this type of start can be succesfully made only from a block-start similar to the kick one. The block-start model adapted by us under the same biomechanical conditions as the ones of the international kick start, is called “athletic kick”. The training specific to the kick start is carried out only with the optimum use of the kick block-start, the reasons for this being presented by N, Houel, A. Charliac, JL.Rey, Phellardin the paper: “How the swimmer could improve his track start using new Olympic plot” [2].

Background: In swimming, a swimmer’s performance is mostly determined by the time spent on starts, stroking and turning. The start of a swimming races, especially sprint races, can account for almost a quarter of race time. Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse the biomechanics and performance of three start techniques off the OSB11 starting platform over 15-meters to determine which of the three is most effective when looking at the three parts that constitute the start: block time, flight time and underwater time. Methods: A Quasi-experimental cross over trial-based study design was used to determine which of three starting techniques (Grab, Track & Kick) was the most effective off the OSB11 starting block. Ten Swimmers who qualified for junior nationals from Vineyard Swimming Club participated in the study. Each participant acted as their own control and were required to perform each start once. All trials were filmed and analysed on Dartfish pro suite 10. The following variables were analysed: shoulder angle, hip angle, knee angle, reaction time, movement time, total block time, flight distance, flight time, flight velocity, entry angle, underwater time, underwater distance, time to 15-meters.

Streszczenie:
The swimming track start is a complex motor skill that utilizes asymmetric lower limb action. The purpose of this study was to explore whether it could be optimized by applying the commonly accepted view that there are asymmetries in the function and behaviors of the lower limbs. Initially, the study aimed to examine the relationship between various measures of lower limb asymmetry and the swimmers' preferences for forward foot placement in the swimming track start. Participants underwent a 7 week training period whereby both the left foot forward (LFF) and the right foot forward (RFF) track starts were practiced. The philosophy behind this training protocol was to ensure that participants received equal practice with the preferred and non-preferred stance so that a dominant stance, if it existed, could emerge. Consequently, the relationships between the dominant track start stance and the lower limb asymmetry measures could be determined more accurately. Participants were male (N=11) and female (N=11) swimmers, aged 12-16 years, from the UWA-Uniswim National Age Squad. Kinetic and kinematic data were collected for the track start prior to and following the 7 week training intervention. The intervention was finished when a participant had completed approximately 14 dive sessions where both the LFF and RFF track starts were practiced. The performance criterion measure was time to 5 m. Despite significant differences in vertical force and velocity contributions following the intervention, time to 5 m did not improve for either the LFF or the RFF track start. Four different measures of lower limb asymmetry were collected, including footedness, the preferred track start stance, and the dominant take-off limb for the unilateral and bilateral counter-movement jump (CMJ). Sixteen of 22 participants displayed changes in their dominant track start stance. Eleven participants showed biases for one stance (6 for the LFF & 5 for the RFF), and 11 participants remained or became more symmetrical. Results indicated that the preferred track start stance was the only measure of asymmetry that was significantly related to track start performance (x2[2]= 6.71, p=.04 for pre-intervention & x2[2]=7.77, p=.02 for post-intervention). All other measures of lower limb asymmetry were shown to be unrelated to track start preference and performance. It was suggested that the 7 week training intervention did not provide a sufficient amount of time to see conclusive effects on 5 m time or to make conclusive comparisons between the dominant track start stance and measures of asymmetry. Since the preferred track start corresponded with better performance less than 50% of the time, it was suggested that swimmers and coaches experiment with different dive techniques to find the start which is most effective for them and spend more time on them during training.

Streszczenie:
Signal Track Analytical Research Tool (START), is a parallel system for analyzing large-scale genomic data. Currently, genomic data analyses are usually performed by using custom scripts developed by individual research groups, and/or by the integrated use of multiple existing tools (such as BEDTools and Galaxy). The goals of START are 1) to provide a single tool that supports a wide spectrum of genomic data analyses that are commonly done by analysts; and 2) to greatly simplify these analysis tasks by means of a simple declarative language (STQL) with which users only need to specify what they want to do, rather than the detailed computational steps as to how the analysis task should be performed. START consists of four major components: 1) A declarative language called Signal Track Query Language (STQL), which is a SQL-like language we specifically designed to suit the needs for analyzing genomic signal tracks. 2) A STQL processing system built on top of a large-scale distributed architecture. The system is based on the Hadoop distributed storage and the MapReduce Big Data processing framework. It processes each user query using multiple machines in parallel. 3) A simple and user-friendly web site that helps users construct and execute queries, upload/download compressed data files in various formats, man-age stored data, queries and analysis results, and share queries with other users. It also provides a complete help system, detailed specification of STQL, and a large number of sample queries for users to learn STQL and try START easily. Private files and queries are not accessible by other users. 4) A repository of public data popularly used for large-scale genomic data analysis, including data from ENCODE and Roadmap Epigenomics, that users can use in their analyses.

The vibration comfort during engine start and stop in a truck is not a problem for the typical truck driver. But when fuel saving systems and hybrid power trains are becoming more common on the market, the aspect of driveability and vibration comfort regarding this load case will become more important, especially in distribution trucks and busses. Different parameters that are of interest during measurement of engine start and stop vibrations have been investigated and a measurement method along with an analysis method has been proposed. A study including 13 experienced truck drivers and test engineers was made with the purpose to find correlation between their subjective judgment and different parameters in the measurement data regarding the vibrations during engine start and stop. The result of the study indicates that the vibrations during engine stop perceives as worse compared to vibrations during engine start. It was also found that the vibration duration may have a bigger impact on subjective judgement than the peak acceleration. Based on the study, a proposal to criterion of acceptance has been established.

Abstract: The science fiction could be understood as a type of anthropological thinking about the alterity. In this dissertation we aim to understand this relation by focusing in the TV Show Star Trek: Voyager. To do that we create a type of reflexion about the philosophical thinking on the concept of alterity and also the invention of philosophy itself. And later in the antropological thinking, as kinds of fiction about the Other. Our grounding is an etnography where we focus on the interation between individuals and machines. The later as a type of radical alterity completely alien to the notion of individual. After this scheme has been created, we understood that the science fiction is based on two kinds of ontological perspectives. The first is the ontology of the individual, mutual for different types of humanoids and their societies in Star Trek. The other is exclusively for the Borg as it is based in the notion of assimilation. Key words: Anthopology of Science Fiction, Star Trek, Ontologies, Individuals

Abstract Veterinary examination of Icelandic competition horses, according to a specially designed protocol 'fit for competition', is performed prior to every entrance to the track during Landsmót, the National Championships of the Icelandic horse. This has provided valuable data for welfare assessment that have been used for improvement of general rules for the benefit of competition horses. It further prevents suffering on an individual level as horses expressing pain during the examination are found not to be fit for competition and are not allowed to start or continue competition during the event. The frequency of bit-related lesions can be regarded as a welfare indicator for Icelandic competition horses, reflecting the pressure placed on the mouth of the horse.

Streszczenie:
Track clearance green phases are used at railroad preempted intersections to provide time to clear the railroad tracks of highway vehicles before a train arrives. This paper describes preemption performance measures developed in Indiana that use high resolution, real-time traffic signal event data, and a gate-down confirmation circuit at an active railroad crossing. These performance measures are used to quantitatively assess the synchronization of the track clearance phase with the railroad gate position. Performance measure plots from over 4,000 preemption events over six months are presented. The lessons learned from the assessment of these performance plots are described along with changes made to the test site during the study period. The paper concludes with recommendations for incorporating a highway-railroad synchronization performance measure using the start of railroad active warning time as a surrogate gate-down confirmation circuit.

Streszczenie:
Within the CMORE program IMEC translates proven, Si technology based device concepts and process flows in industrially and commercially viable products and manufacturing flows. Si based IC processing technologies are, and will continue for a long time to be at the basis of many product innovations. Miniaturization and integration have proven to be powerful tools for the conception of novel products. These technologies are usually referred to a “Heterogeneous Integration” or “More Then Moore” in contrast to the pure CMOS scaling referred to as “More Moore”. Many of these new products combine high performance, multiple functions and compactness with consumer price levels. In other cases, miniaturization leads to unprecedented performances, resulting in products which were not feasible before. New device concepts are often generated at university, governmental or industrial laboratories. Although these environments are very well suited for proving technical feasibility, they are often less well equipped and organized for product development and the development of corresponding Si processing flow. On the other hand the prime focus of Si or MEMS foundries, be it merchant or captive, is wafer throughput, resulting in little interest for allocating processing capacity to product and process development, when product market acceptance still has to be proven and high volume production is still questionable. In addition development activities introduce risks on contamination and equipment failures leading to a reduction of the fab capacity. This gap between “proof-of-concept” and volume manufacturing offers new opportunities for R&D fabs traditionally active in CMOS scaling. These “development and prototyping” fabs have the infrastructure, processing know-how and procedures in place to efficiently translate device concepts into products and to develop industrially viable fabrication processes. In addition they have the flexibility and experience to introduce very quickly new materials and associated equipment, while keeping in mind compatibility with the industrial foundry environment, where final production will take place. Close cooperation with material and equipment suppliers is very important in that respect. In many projects executed at IMEC, wafer scale interconnects and/or wafer scale packaging are important aspects of the final device and therefore should be included from the start of the project. In this paper the IMEC approach and capabilities will be presented and illustrated with a number of past and ongoing projects.

Streszczenie:
This paper describes the process of incremental pipeline filling and the phased commissioning of a real-time leak detection system for the 1768 km long BTC crude oil pipeline. Due to stringent environmental requirements, it is essential for the leak detection system to work from the moment that crude oil is introduced into the pipeline. Without any prior operational data and with the pipeline partially filled, it is challenging for the leak detection system to monitor the integrity of the pipeline throughout the whole filling process. The application of the pig tracking software to track the oil front as the crude displaces nitrogen is also discussed.

Streszczenie:
This paper chronicles a control system retrofit for a 38,000 horsepower refrigeration compressor drive at Novacor’s Ethylene #1 Plant, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada (Fig. 1). The changes were designed to meet a 3-year continuous operation requirement. When the plant was constructed in the late 1970’s, annual turnarounds were considered normal operating procedure. The project replaced original electronic controls on a 23,500 horsepower G. E. Frame 5, Model R gas turbine and a 18,300 horsepower Elliott 2 NV starter/helper steam turbine. Both turbines are connected at opposite ends of a single compressor drive shaft (Fig. 2). Because of the cost associated with any control system malfunction, a programmable triple modular redundant controller was selected as the replacement. Among the modifications performed to enhance system reliability were wiring dual exhaust thermocouples directly into the system and triplicating critical field devices. Another important aspect of this upgrade was replacing deteriorating underground field instrumentation wiring with cabling in overhead cable trays. The original wiring was over stressed by “frost heaving,” causing several unplanned shutdowns. In April of 1991, the project team initiated a schedule to meet an early August delivery. System specification, checkout, and start-up, as well as its first year of performance are discussed.

Streszczenie:
In dynamic systems, motion transfer due to frictional effects could result in quasi-harmonic oscillations and stick-slip, with potentially undesirable effects. The track-following motion of a read/write (RW) head-assembly transfers frictional forced onto the translating tape. This, in turn, has the potential to introduce unwanted dynamic motion into the system, and to affect the track following operation. In extreme cases the tape could stick onto the head-assembly, which could then create the potential for sudden release (slip) of the tape, if the restoring forces exceed the static friction forces. Due to longitudinal tape motion, stick is only a possibility during start-stop operations. However, with increasingly smoother tape, the effects of friction induced vibration (FrIV) could become problematic for the next generation of tape drives.

The dynamic behavior optimization of the Formula SAE car built at the Universita` degli Studi di Firenze is discussed. A virtual model was built using MSC Adams Motorsports, in order to simulate the kinematics and dynamics of the car. A data acquisition system was mounted on board to record all the data useful to setup the car and the virtual model too. The multibody approach was coupled with a multi objective optimizer to start a design of experiments that was able to find the robust design that maximizes the performance along the Formula SAE track.

Streszczenie:
Abstract This paper presents the design, modeling and bench testing of a smart railroad tie for energy harvesting from the motion of railway track. The system is intended for applications that require trackside power in remote locations, such as wayside electrical devices and safety equipment, signal lights, crossing gates, wireless communication, as well as rail health monitoring systems. The smart tie, which is designed to have similar dimensions to a conventional railroad tie, is installed in the same manner as a standard tie on the track. In particular, the mechanical energy harvesting module and its corresponding power management unit can be both embedded inside a composite, concrete or wooden tie, in order to shield the components from the harsh environment and protect the system against any potential theft or vandalism. Different from other railway track harvesters that typically harvest energy from bidirectional track deflections, the proposed smart tie only harvests the kinetic energy of the track when the wheels push it downwards, which resolves the preload and installation challenges of bidirectional harvesting and increases the overall system reliability. A nonlinear analytical model is developed to analyze the dynamic characteristic of the system and the simulation is conducted to predict the performance. Bench tests are subsequently carried out under both harmonic and recorded tie displacement inputs to validate the model and assess the harvesting performance. During the bench tests, the generator shaft was observed to start rotation at 0.1 mm vibration amplitude, indicating that the overall prototype has a relatively small backlash. In-lab test results indicate that an average power of 26.1–42.2W on 4 Ohms and 2 Ohms external loads were achieved under simulated tie movement recorded from a service track.

Streszczenie:
This study presents new results on a method to solve large kinematic synthesis systems termed Finite Root Generation. The method reduces the number of startpoints used in homotopy continuation to find all the roots of a kinematic synthesis system. For a single execution, many start systems are generated with corresponding startpoints using a random process such that start-points only track to finite roots. Current methods are burdened by computations of roots to infinity. New results include a characterization of scaling for different problem sizes, a technique for scaling down problems using cognate symmetries, and an application for the design of a spined pinch gripper mechanism. We show that the expected number of iterations to perform increases approximately linearly with the quantity of finite roots for a given synthesis problem. An implementation that effectively scales the four-bar path synthesis problem by six using its cognate structure found 100% of roots in an average of 16,546 iterations over ten executions. This marks a roughly six-fold improvement over the basic implementation of the algorithm.
