Streszczenie:
The development of the sport of chess in Mykolaiv begins with the legendary game between the Swedish king Karl XII and the Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa on the banks of the Southern Bug on a rest stop on their route after the defeat in the Battle of Poltava in 1709 (modern yacht club). Mykolaiv was formed as a center of shipbuilding, where the Main Headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet and the ports of the Russian Empire were located, and its residents became shipbuilding engineers, naval officers, scientists, industrialists, diplomats, who were the first to introduce the game of chess among the townspeople. The very first public chess battles took place in the summer Maritime Meeting, and later in the constructed buildings of the "House of Flagships and Captains" (since 1824), Mykolaiv Maritime Astronomical Observatory (since 1829), yacht club (since 1887). On June 28, 1887, the "Chess Society" was founded in Mykolaiv, which did not last long, but was revived in December 1901. The members of the Society held chess games among themselves, for the fi rst time held a city-wide chess tournament in 1902, took part in European chess tournaments and won. The society held competitions of chess problems, collected literature and materials, published endgames of famous chess players and its own materials in local, metropolitan and European chess periodicals. Historical and political vicissitudes of the beginning of the 20th century with wars and revolutions that led to economic ruin, the death of people, the emigration of a significant part of the intelligentsia, did not contribute to the development and spread of chess sports in Mykolaiv during this historical period.

Purpose: To examine whether preceding high-intensity race efforts in a competitive weekend affect pacing behavior and performance in elite short-track speed skaters. Methods: Finishing and intermediate lap times were gathered from 500-, 1000-, and 1500-m short-track speed skating world cups during the seasons 2011–2016. The effect of preceding races on pacing behavior and performance was explored using 2 studies. Study I: The effect of competing in extra races due to the repechage (Rep) system, leading to an increased number of high-intensity race efforts prior to the subsequent main tournament race, was explored (500-m, n = 32; 1000-m, n = 34; and 1500-m, n = 47). Study II: The performance of skaters over the tournament days was evaluated (500-m, n = 129; 1000-m, n = 54; and 1500-m, n = 114). For both analytic approaches, a 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to assess differences in pacing and performance within skaters over the races. Results: An additional number of preceding high-intensity race efforts due to the Rep system reduced the qualification percentage in the first main tournament race for the next stage of competition in all events (500-m, direct qualification = 57.3%, Rep = 25.0%; 1000-m, direct = 44.2%, Rep = 28.3%; and 1500-m, direct = 27.1%, Rep = 18.2%) and led to a decreased pace in the initial 2 laps of the 500-m event. By contrast, tournament day (Saturday vs Sunday) only affected the pacing behavior of female skaters during the 1500-m event. Conclusion: High-intensity race efforts earlier in the day affected pacing and performance of elite skaters, whereas the effect of high-intensity race efforts from the previous day seemed to be only marginal.

Somatic embryogenesis was initiated from in vitro-grown leaf explants of rose using an induction period of 4 weeks on MS basal medium supplemented with auxin followed by several subcultures on MS basal medium with cytokinin. `4th of July' showed the highest regeneration frequency (24.4%) on 5.3 μm NAA followed by culture on medium containing 18.2 μm zeatin. `Tournament of Roses' produced somatic embryos when cultured for 4 weeks on medium containing dicamba, 2.3 μm followed by three subcultures on medium containing 18.2 μm zeatin. Embryogenic callus matured on MS media containing 0.5 μm NAA, 6.8 μm zeatin, and 2.9 μm GA3. Long-term cultures were established for both cultivars. Somatic embryos germinated on MS medium containing IBA and BA. Silver nitrate (58.8 μm) enhanced shoot formation and germination of somatic embryos. Plants derived from somatic embryos were acclimatized and successfully established in the greenhouse.

Tennis and golf, as well as numerous other sports, found their way to Germany in the era of the Wilhelmine Empire. Hoteliers in German health resorts, operators of private sports grounds or commercial playground companies, among others, played a significant role. Uhlenhorst, a district of Hamburg since 1894, was already the venue for major tennis tournaments with international players in the early 1890s. At that time, the London merchant, tennis player and sports official Walter Howard donated a silver cup to the Ice Rink Club on Uhlenhorst (Eisbahnverein auf der Uhlenhorst), which was used as a prize for the “Championship of Hamburg”. This article goes into Walter Howard’s biography and outlines his commitment to Hamburg tennis, which also gave important impulses to women’s tennis.

AimTo estimate the incidence of injury in adult elite women’s football and to characterise the nature and anatomical location of injuries.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Data sourcesCombinations of the key terms were entered into the following electronic databases (PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Science Direct and Discover) from inception to May 2021.Eligibility criteria for selecting studies(1) Used a prospective cohort design; (2) captured data on elite adult women players; (3) reported injury incidence by anatomical site; (4) captured data of at least one season or national team tournament; (5) included a definition of injury; and (6) written in English.ResultsThe search identified 1378 records. Twelve studies published between 1991 and 2018 were included in our review and sampled 129 teams. In domestic club football, injury incidence rate was estimated to be 5.7/1000 hours (total), 19.5/1000 hours (match) and 3.1/1000 hours (training). In tournament, football match incidence was estimated to be 55.7/1000 hours. The knee (22.8%; 368/1822) was the most common site of injury in domestic club football. The ankle (23.7%, 105/443) was the most common site of injury in tournament football. Ligament sprains were the most common type of injury (27.8%), followed by muscle strains (19.1%). Severn studies (58%) had a high risk of bias associated with exposure definition and measurement and considerable heterogeneity exists between the included studies (I2=49.7%–95%).Summary/conclusionLigament sprains occur more frequently in adult elite women football players. We advise caution in interpretating point estimates of the incidence of injury due to high statistical heterogeneity. Standardising injury reporting and the accurate recording of match and training exposure will overcome such limitations.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42019130407.su

Abstract:This article addresses the question as to how Jane Guyer's seminal explorations of special traits of West African economies in Marginal Gains (2004) can help us understand variations within the region. This question acquires some urgency—for instance in the Cameroonian context, but elsewhere also—since the dimensions she emphasizes (reciprocity, gain, rank) play a crucial role in quite vicious ethnic stereotypes that increasingly dominate people's perceptions of economic developments. The challenge may be, therefore, to determine how an analysis in terms of disjunctures as an asset for marginal gains can steer clear of the ethnic stereotypes through which people themselves perceive discontinuities in everyday life. Starting from the historical example of the wild-rubber boom in southern Cameroon under German rule (1890–1913) and its chaotic effects at the local level, the article considers how Arjun Appadurai's notion of “tournaments of value” might help us understand such variations.

The article is devoted to identifying the specifics and main reasons for the development of the multiplayer gaming industry. The main factors in its development were not only the improvement of Internet technologies and software, but the great demand of players to expand opportunities for self-presentation, passive entertainment and gaining income in the game space. As a result, there appeared the special virtual trading platforms allowing the player to carry out additional customization of the game character for real money. The customization gives the character special unique characteristics distinguishing him from many others. Each game genre has certain capabilities and functionality for the self-presentation of players through customization of the game character. The desire of players to gain success in a virtual environment has led to the development of the phenomenon called e-sports which is based on holding cyber tournaments in halls with special equipment, visual venues and commentators. The demand for the expansion of the entertainment base has led to the emergence of streaming which is the ability to passively monitor the gameplay broadcasting in the Internet in real time. To attract viewers, and, accordingly, sponsors, broadcasts are accompanied by original jokes and comments, therefore streaming often resembles a television entertainment show.

The purpose of this study was to investigate open-play crosses at the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament, with spe- cific reference to the mechanism and match status of the crosses. Descriptive statistics (i.e., frequency counts and percentages) and chi-square tests of association were used to analyse the data. The study observed a total of 949 crosses, resulting in 20 goals scored (2.1%). Descriptive statistics highlighted that offensive teams had more goal-scor- ing attempts when they used counter-attacks (18.6%) compared to organized (18.2%) and direct (10.9%) attacks. A greater number of goal-scoring attempts were observed when teams used out-swinging crosses (17.4%) as opposed to in-swinging (15%) and straight (13.5%) crosses. There was a significant (p < 0.05) association between the type of attack and match status. Winning teams preferred to adopt a counter-attacking style of play; losing teams used more direct attacking strategies, and drawing teams utilized more organized attacks. Losing teams took the highest number of crosses from Zones 1 (61.1%) and 2 (56.7%) compared to other zones. These findings provide practical implications for football coaches to tailor match tactics to replicate crossing scenarios at international competitions.

Abstract. Muscle power (MP) is relevant in basketball, although its relationship with physical and competitive performance is not clear when it manifests itself at different overloads. Objective: to analyze the relationship between MP at various loads with physical and competitive performance in basketball players. In 20 players (age 18.2 ± 5.1 years, weight 80.1 ± 13.7 kg, height 185.6 ± 4.4 cm) maximum strength was measured through 1RM and PM from 40% to 80% of 1RM in the middle squat; 20 meters sprint launched, long jump, Illinois test with and without the ball and game statistics with Final Valuation (VAL). The highest MP was found between 70% and 80% of 1RM; The Illinois test with ball correlated with the MP in all loads (p <.05) and 20 meters sprint launched with medium power between 50% and 80% of 1RM. The tournament VAL correlated with medium and low loads in long-distance shot attempts (rho = .79; p<.01), converted (rho = .68; p<.05) and percentage of field goals (rho = .70; p<.05). In the final game various types of shots inversely correlated with high loads. Conclusion: there is a relationship between MP, physical and competitive performance according to the load and it should be considered for its training in basketball.

Streszczenie:
Poker has become the subject of an increasing amount of study in the computational intelligence community. The element of imperfect information presents new and greater challenges than those previously posed by games such as checkers and chess. Advances in computer poker have great potential, since reasoning under conditions of uncertainty is typical of many real world problems. To date the focus of computer poker research has centred on the development of ring game players for limit Texas hold’em. For a computer to compete in the most prestigious poker events, however, it will be required to play in a tournament setting with a no-limit betting structure. This thesis is the first academic attempt to investigate the underlying dynamics of successful no-limit tournament poker play. Professional players have proffered advice in the non-academic poker literature on correct strategies for tournament poker play. This study seeks to empirically validate their suggestions on a simplified no-limit Texas hold’em tournament framework. Starting by using exhaustive simulations, we first assess the hypothesis that a strategy including information related to game-specific factors performs better than one founded on hand strength knowledge alone. Specifically, we demonstrate that the use of information pertaining to one’s seating position, the opponents’ prior actions, the stage of the tournament, and one’s chip stack size all contribute towards a statistically significant improvement in the number of tournaments won. In extending the research to combine all factors we explain the limitations of the exhaustive simulation approach, and introduce evolutionary algorithms as a method of searching the strategy space. We then test the hypothesis that a strategy which combines information from all the aforementioned factors performs better than one which employs only a single factor. We show that an evolutionary algorithm is successfully able to resolve conflicting signals from the specified factors, and that the resulting strategies are statistically stronger than those previously discovered. Our research continues with an analysis of the results, as we interpret them in the context of poker strategy. We compare our findings to poker authors’ recommendations, and conclude with a discussion on the many possible extensions to this work.

MacKenzie, Ian A. "On the initial allocation of tradeable pollution permits". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/241.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the initial allocation of pollution permits in a dynamic tradeable market. Tradeable pollution permit markets are an increasingly common method of environmental regulation and it is apparent that future schemes may have a number of repeated compliance periods. It is important to consider how and to what extent the dynamic allocation of pollution permits determines the market efficiency at the equilibrium. This objective is developed in three parts. First, Part I introduces the topic and sets out the current relationships that exist between the initial allocation of permits and market efficiency and finds strong links between the two. It is shown that markets with imperfect competition, transaction costs or multiple periods can result in links between the initial allocation and market efficiency. In Part II, a generalised model is created to investigate the optimality of dynamic permit allocations and finds the dynamic use of grandfathering (free allocation based on emissions information) permits is, in general, sub-optimal. It is argued that alternative dynamic mechanisms should be considered, such as auctions and other relative performance mechanisms. Part II is concluded by an investigation into the link between market efficiency, dynamic initial allocations and firms' lobbying over a permit allocation. Firms have the ability to determine their permit allocation by their choice of emissions and lobbying activity. It is shown that in some circumstances, lobbying activity may alter market efficiency and may result in reductions in social welfare. In Part III, an alternative dynamic allocation mechanism is considered, namely a rank-ordered contest, which can optimally allocate permits and simultaneously accomplish a predetermined secondary policy objective. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the policy implications and future work associated with this research.

The Historical Research on Taiwan Elementary School Sports Tournaments during the Initial Stage of Japanese Governance(1895-1911) January, 2007 Chin Hsiang-Pin Advisor:Tasi, Jen-Shiung ABSTRACT Developing smoothly, sports tournaments were introduced into Taiwan by the Japanese colonial government a hundred years ago. From colonial and modernistic points of view, this paper intends to investigate the origin and the process of development of Taiwan elementary school sports tournaments during the initial stage of Japanese governance, and to make an inquiry into the activities held by the sports tournaments and how they influence Taiwanese. The findings of the research: During the initial stage of Japanese governance, the first school sports tournament held by the first branch of kukogo school was the “trip on foot” on December, 12th, 1896. As the beginning of Taiwan elementary school sports tournament, the “trip on foot” was merely a rough model. The form of it was not established until 1901. Then, sports tournaments based on gymnastics and various competitions were separated from the “trip on foot.” On November, 23rd, 1897, the first sports tournament named “united sports tournament” was held by the first and the second branch of kukogo school. Since 1905, sports tournaments had become popular among Taiwan elementary schools. As for the goal of sports tournaments, the difference between the Taiwan elementary schools and the Japan elementary schools was that the former put emphasis on hygiene. And one unique purpose of the public elementary schools during this stage was the promotion of entering school. As for the meeting date, the sports tournaments were held on national holidays in order to convey the nationalism of the emperor of Japan. The same concept was also conveyed implicitly through the decoration and the form of the tournaments so as to teach the young colonial citizen loyalty and patriotism. Lastly, the sports tournaments not only played the role of superior checking the gymnastics in school, they also introduced modern sports, enriching the development of physical education indirectly. In short, being regarded as the best display of conveying the concept of sports, Taiwan elementary school sports tournaments had become a routine. And the Japanese colonial government showed the power of doctrines by holding them. From personal points of view, I consider sports tournaments as the first step of educating Taiwanese. Key words: the initial stage of Japanese governance, Taiwan elementary school, sports tournaments.

Abstract The main aim of this chapter is to present an account of the work of Bose, Shrikhande, Parker and others which culminated in the 1960 proof that two mutually orthogonal Latin squares (MOLS) of order n exist whenever n ≠2 or 6. Since this has been established indirectly via Theorems 1.3.5 and 3.4.1, there is strictly no need for a further proof. However, a particularly elegant constructive one is readily available. This proof was published independently by Bose (1938) and Stevens (1939), but, remarkably, the construction is present in E.H. Moore’s long 1896 paper.

Abstract A Steiner triple system is simply a block design with k = 3 and λ= 1. This choice of parameters is one of the simplest which could be made, and the corresponding designs form one of the first families of designs for which existence was established. Without knowing of Kirkman’s work. Steiner came across the problem of the existence of such designs in a geometrical context in 1853, and publicized the problem. The designs were therefore to become known as Steiner triple systems. This is particularly unfair on Kirkman, since not only did Kirkman provide an existence proof, but Steiner did not. Reiss published a proof shortly afterwards which is essentially identical to Kirkman’s, and later on many other mathematicians, beginning with Moore in 1893, gave a variety of different proofs. Kirkman’s own proof has been undeservedly neglected.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Unlike all other major American team sports, professional major-league baseball gained cultural primacy in the United States long before the amateur and semiprofessional games. Although amateur and semiprofessional play sustained the game as the national pastime for more than a century, professional baseball fundamentally shaped the way that most Americans have played and thought about the sport. The creation of the National League in 1876 spawned the key elements-league structure; territorial franchise monopolies; annual championship tournaments; the “reserve clause”; assignment of game officials; and revenue sharing-that dominated commercialized American sports for more than a century. Given the fact that basketball was not invented until 1891 and that professional football only materialized in institutional form in the 1920s, baseball was the only leading American professional sport until after World War I. Despite the ascendancy of amateurism during the late nineteenth century, professional baseball, although an anomaly for its time, provided a model for Americans in understanding big-time commercialized sports.
