The International Conference the European Pilgrimage Routes for promoting sustainable and quality tourism in rural areas took place December 4 to 6, 2014 in Firenze (Italy) and was organized by the Department of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Systems – University of Florence in collaboration with the Tuscany Region, the Department for Life Quality Studies and Department of Agricultural Sciences – University of Bologna, the Italian Association of Agricultural Engineering and the European Association of the Francigena Way. The Conference involving 150 experts from 18 countries and was divided into five areas of discussion: conservation and evolution of the landscape along the routes; life quality and social impact; tourism and local development; sustainability in the rural areas; tools and methods for building a tourist attraction.

The research aims to analyse the concept of the 'holiday home' in Italy, a phenomenon that is not very well known and not given sufficient visibility in the tourism sector. The objective is to grasp the role and the degree of response that the holiday homes can offer in order to consolidate a genuinely social and sustainable tourism, which is the specific feature of the Associazione di Promozione Sociale Santa Lucia. The holiday homes represent an efficacious response to the emerging motivations for travel and a new sensitivity towards social and sustainable tourism. The growing opportunities for this sector call for reflection on the mission and future positioning of the holiday homes within the tourist reception panorama, with the deriving choices relating to: the offer, consisting of values more than of services; the functions fulfilled, intimately bound up with the demands of the individual and the territory; the quality of the service, which is not generic but linked to the functions and can be measured in line with objective and subjective parameters. Strategic awareness, managerial capacity and elevated professionalism at all levels are the factors of legitimisation and success of this original reception formula.

This book discusses the homestay programme in Malaysia in the context of tourism product.It begins by looking into the evolution of tourism in Malaysia, focusing on its growth and development.Tourism product is an important component of any tourism destination, thus the book later looks into the product concept as well as the development of tourism products in Malaysia.Malaysia has many natural, cultural and man-made tourist products and attractions that can potentially pull tourists to its shore.The rest of the book then turns into the discussion of the Malaysian homestay programme.The programme, which can be categorized as Malaysias rural cultural tourism product may well be a way to reinvigorate tourism as it is an initiative to attract alternative tourist markets due to its unique product elements.Different perspectives and conceptual frameworks are used in looking at the homestay programme specifically in the area of product benefits, tourist experience, resident perceptions, and product quality. The elements of the programme are identified and the outcomes explored.Finally, issues surrounding the programme are discussed and recommendations on future management of the programme are offered. The book is hoped to answer enquiries about the unique homestay programme in Malaysia, if not completely, at least partially.
