This article deals with the development of scientific research in the field of tourism economy. It dwells on the concept of tourism economy as a science which studies the system of economic relations in the sphere of production, distribution and consumption of tourist services. Research into tourism economy was triggered by the rapid development of tourism in the second half of the twentieth century. An active collection of statistical data on tourism also contributed to the development of tourism economy. The first to attract scientific attention were the issues concerning the impact of tourism on the economy at both global and national levels. Another research-relevant point concerns the concept of tourist multiplier that allows assessment not only of direct but also of indirect tourism influence. The authors claim that the multiplier-effect is conventionally assessed according to input-output models. The new paradigm of research into the economic results of tourism activity is based on the general equilibrium models. The article considers the subject content of one of the first foreign journals on tourism economy, Tourism Economics, as well as the activities of the International Association for Tourism Economics (International Association for Tourism Economics — IATE). The authors point out that intensive research is conducted concerning effective demand and effective demand forecasting, with the research results effectively used in tourism policy making. The authors analyse the lines of foreign and Russian scientific economic research in the sphere of tourism, and conclude that the issues of market grouping and development, as well as price formation are central to scientific research. The authors also propose that one of the highly promising lines of research is an analysis of the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the development of the tourist market and the tourism economy. The authors emphasise the importance of measuring the performance in the tourism sector, noting, however, that tourism performance indices are insufficiently studied. Competitiveness in tourism is seen by the authors as one of the major areas of economic research, and the article provides information on the index of competitiveness of travel and tourism in different countries (Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index — TTCI) in recent years. The article describes the most poorly explored cross-disciplinary directions of tourism economy, in particular, those viewed from a psychological, social, sociological and other perspectives. Among the most pressing research problems, as identified by the authors, are the influence of financial and economic crises on tourism, research and prevention of risks in tourism, as well as the impact that the problems of experience economy and participation economy, crisis management in the tourism sector, the impact of globalization, mergers and acquisitions, have on tourism development in the framework of global and national economies.

Residents’ attitudes concerning tourism evolution and impacts in tourism host localities are a crucial determinant of the ability of the tourism sector to develop. Easter Island has recently experienced a tremendous tourism growth, which has nurtured expectations that the tourist sector could become the economic driver of the island. Using fieldwork, interviews and surveys, we investigate residents’ perceptions towards tourism and analyse their implications for the sector’s future development. The survey results show that 96% of residents believe that tourism is important or very important for the island’s economy. We conclude that while residents of Easter Island are aware of tourism’s negative impacts, they support the tourism sector, because they recognize it as the main future driver of the island’s economy. However, due to the current environmental threats and the serious governance problems of the island, it is not clear if further expansion of the tourism sector will be sustainable.

The specificity of the tourist market and the connection of modern tourist products with numerous economic and non-economic activities cause the multiplicity of socio-economic effects of tourism. The development of tourism creates opportunities for a number of other activities, which means that tourism is a significant factor in boosting the overall economic development. Tourism plays a particularly important role in the overall socio-economic development of underdeveloped countries and regions. Tourism can contribute to positive socio-economic development, but at the same time, inadequate and uncontrolled management of a tourist destination can have negative socio-cultural, but also economic consequences. The paper investigates the basic socio-cultural and economic aspects and impacts of tourism. The authors pay special attention to the analysis of the multiplying effects of tourism on the development of a particular destination. Starting from the history of travel and tourism as an activity, key motives and socio-economic effects, the 2008 World Economic Crisis, its origin, causes, and consequences of its impact on the entire world economy, especially tourism, the authors analyzed the current economic indicators of tourism activity in the world economy and projections of expected trends. In this paper, the focus of the analysis is on the tourist travel and economic and socio-cultural impact of tourism on the tourist destination, the individual, and the society as a whole.

The article considers the issues of further development of the conceptual apparatus of such a direction as recreation and tourism and the question of determining the various directions and components of recreation and tourism economy. The purpose of this work is to identify the main components of recreational and tourist activity as an integral part of the inter-sectoral complex. It is stressed that tourism activity can be viewed from the standpoint of the economy, because it has all the features of the economy, although this approach is not widespread. It is also possible to study the recreation and tourism sector as a type of economic activity. Recreational and tourist activity is considered as a service market, both as a social system and as an economic system. It was emphasized that in geography and regional economy, recreational and tourist activity is considered as an inter-sectoral complex. A pivotal problem is the definition of objects and entities in systemic relations, where, depending on the nature of the system, tourists can act as objects and subjects. It was established that the formation of the subject area of recreational and tourist activity is based on geographical concepts, including the concept of «touristdestination», the concept of territorial organization of the population and economy, the concept of territorial recreational systems. The position of geographers in the development of the subject area of tourism enhances resource orientation of tourism activity; we note that the resource is both population and tourist destinations. In the article we considered the Ukrainian taxonomy of types of economic activities, which are directly involved in tourism and recreation. It is determined that tourism and recreation sector occupy a special place in the sphere of services. In essence, tourist services are multi–component, and the tourist product itself combines the result of the activities of enterprises that carry out completely different activities. The schematically structured recreation and tourism complex by types of activities indicates the formation of areas of economic activity and industry directly related to recreation and tourism, such as mass recreation of the population – unorganized and organized, and tourism, the sphere of recreation. Thus, the representation ofrecreation and tourism activity as an inter-branch complex offers new possibilities for forecasting its development and formation of new directions of use of recreational and tourist resources.

Problems of efficiency of tourism development for the urban economy should be considered on the basis of a systematic approach, which involves the establishment of different criteria and indicators for different levels of government, as well as a hierarchy of goals and corresponding efficiency criteria. Based on the analysis, the article summarizes the concept of "tourist potential of the city". It is determined that the main components of tourist potential are resource, economic and social potential. The main methods of determining the tourist potential are identified, including expert, comparative, cartographic, technological, aesthetic methods of analysis. The directions of tourism impact on the economy of the territory are considered. Direct and indirect effects, as well as induced effects of tourism development are considered separately. The interrelation and interaction of different spheres of the city economy and tourism are shown. In the analysis it is necessary to consider significant sectors of the urban economy: hotel, construction, catering, retail, tour operators, industry, wholesale, housing and communal services, communications, transport, insurance and banking, medicine, education and others. To calculate the gross tourist product, calculate the sum of all costs incurred for the production of tourist goods and services for a certain period. These are the costs of tourist consumption, private and public tourism investments. In addition, calculate the amount of all income from the sale of tourist goods and services for a certain period. This income from the sale of tourist goods and services, income from renting rooms, apartments, etc. The use of a multiplier to determine the impact of tourism development on the city economy is proposed. The calculation of tourism multipliers involves determining the total income from the tourism industry and related infrastructure. Comprehensive assessment allows to identify the economic level of tourism development in the territory, the effect, and is also the basis for justification and management decisions. The study showed that in the modern scientific literature there are several types of multipliers. These are multipliers of income, employment, investment, commercial operations, production and sales. The foreign experience of assessment of social and economic effects from the development of the tourist sphere is analyzed and the possibility of its use in the conditions of Ukraine is substantiated. Introduction. In the 21st century tourism took a leading place in the international foreign economic relations, began to have a serious impact on development of economy of the certain countries and the world economy in general. Тhose benefits for both people and economy of countries and the whole regions do not raise any doubts. Tourism is a complex sector, but it significantly influences national economy, social and humanitarian bases. Aim and tasks. Research objective is definition of the developments’ directions and tourism industry’s financing, identification of factors, regularities and development trends at the present stage in Ukraine. Thus, there was a task to analyze systemically the current state of the Ukrainian tourist industry’s development, in other countries, and to investigate the question concerning financial and organizational component of the Ukrainian tourism industry functioning in Ukraine. Results. It was offered to use the concept of tourism development with transition in development from short-term to long-term planning, at the international, national and regional levels. Developing of the telecommunications has a certain influence on the development directions of the tourist industry: development of portals, websites, mobile applications to simplify communication between suppliers of tourism and ultimate consumers. In Ukraine, is more effective the state regulation model of tourism with control through the separate divisions in two directions. This will resolve the question of budgetary funds use for development and implementation of tourism’s development programs. It is necessary to use alternative sources of travel business’s financing such as agreements about tourist object’s share uses, as partnership in attraction of borrowed funds and sponsorship. Conclusions. Аt the present stage the important direction is state regulation in tourism in combination of the state and regional development tourism programs. These regulations requires improvement of tourists’ service quality and personnel’s professional competences development, development of the marketing plan and creation of the Ukrainian tourist agencies on advance in Ukraine and abroad. Such development has to be carried out by taking into account development of an information economy: in the Internet and with use of innovative financial instruments.

Purpose A transportation connectivity strategy is a crucial part of an adaptive, congruent and sustainable tourism transportation system and is of concern to countries focusing on growing their tourism economy. This study aims to gain a better understanding of the relationship between transportation connectivity and the tourism economy through a configuration analysis. Design/methodology/approach This study uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on a sample of 153 cities in China to provide an understanding of the impacts of transportation connectivity strategies, with the co-effecting factors of socio-economic status, tourism resource endowment and hospitality capacity, on the development of regional tourism economies. Findings There are multiple paths that lead to regional tourism economic development (a high level of tourist arrivals or a high level of tourism revenue). High-speed rail can play a supportive role, while air travel or traditional rail remains central to the tourism economy. Socio-economic status (i.e. city size and city gross domestic product) and hospitality capacity are identified as crucial influencers for the development of the tourism economy. Research limitations/implications This study confirms the validity of deploying configuration analysis (based on the equifinality theory) to establish the relationship between transportation and the tourism economy. The finding of more than one configuration led to a new consensus on how multiple factors influence the tourism economy. Practical implications Suggestions on transportation connectivity strategies for different regions are provided. Originality/value This study demonstrates the need to place greater emphasis on configurations that lead to tourism economy development instead of the effect of a single transportation mode.

The lack of sustainable development strategies of the tourist resorts from Romania caused the structural dynamics of their economy to record large fluctuations under the impact of determinants with unpredictable developments. The spectacular dynamics have led to developments difficult to predict, in many situations that generate environmental conflicts, where the economic pressure has exceeded the support capacity of the natural environment. In this study, we aim to analyze the dynamic relationship between tourism and the other components of the economy, from each resort from Romania. The significant growth of tourism in recent years requires new approaches, relevant for understanding the role of tourism in increasing the complexity of the local economy. Measuring the role of tourism in the development of local economy was achieved by building an economic database for all tourist resorts from Romania (according to Government Decision No. 107 of 2018), at the four-digit NACE code level (Classification of National Economy Activities), for the economic indicators considered relevant: number of companies, number of employees, and turnover and profit, for the period 2000–2016, as well as at territorial administrative unit level. Detailed analyses revealed very different structural dynamics, the spectacular dynamics, lacking a coherent strategic framework, led in all situations to the emergence of environmental conflicts. Tourist resorts in which tourism has become an essential component of economic development have based their development on capitalization of local resources, which led to multiplication effects, materialized in a spectacular evolution of the local economy, and an increasing pressure on the natural environment.

Coastal city of the Ivory Coast, San-Pedro is rich in natural, economic and tourist resources. This study analyses the contribution of the tourism economy to local development. Documentary research and a field survey were used to collect data. It should be remembered that San-Pedro has floristic, climatic and hydrographic assets. Moreover, human capital is one of the pillars of this activity with a diversity of actors, a socio-cultural wealth including remarkable historic sites (10) and twenty-eight (28) tourist establishments of varied standing. Despite these assets, the tourist economy suffers from an organizational dysfunction and a weakness in investments. With 64% of the Ivorian workforce working mainly in informal or ephemeral sectors linked to the tourism economy, only 10% of the households surveyed said they were feeling the effects of it. The spatial, social and economic impact of the tourist sector remains below the real potential of this locality and below expectations.

The sharing economy is rapidly gaining popularity, especially in the tourism sector. The sharing economy transforms functioning business models, giving businesses new economic activities and development opportunities. However, while sharing economy-based models are spreading in the world, not only the advantages but also the disadvantages are seen. This paper summarizes the arguments within the scientific discussion on the economic characteristics of sharing economy. It identifies the actions determining the development of sharing economy in the tourism sector. Since it is known that the sharing economy is developing rapidly, the development of the sharing economy is usually analyzed as a whole, regardless of the different sectors. However, the development of the sharing economy in the tourism sector is found to be the fastest. Besides, there is the largest number of stakeholders. Systematization of scientific treatises and approaches concerning the investigated issue indicated that the main drivers for the sharing economy development in the tourism sector are the Internet and technology among tourists, the cyclical nature of the economy, the change of societal values, and environmental friendliness. The methodological base of this research was secondary data analysis. The research empirically confirmed and theoretically proved that the sharing economy in the tourism sector develops rapidly, attracts more and more consumers in the tourism sector, and outpaces traditional business models. The obtained results could be used for analyzing the most favorable conditions to develop new business models in the market, analyze the response of market participants (consumers and traditional business model), promote new business initiatives in the tourism sector, research the sharing economy phenomenon in narrower tourism (transport, entertainment, and tourist information platforms).

The local and international communities play an important role in the sustainable growth of the Malaysian tourism industry. The principle of sustainable growth in the tourism industry was proposed by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) in 1988. As the tourism industry is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in Malaysia, the government has poured considerable effort into promoting this industry consistent with the objective of the Economic Transformation Program (ETP) to transform from a resource-based economy to a service-based economy. This study aimed to test the hypothesis of tourism-led growth from Malaysia’s perspective. The tourism revenue earned by the government can be used to invest in industry to further promote economic growth in Malaysia. Hence, tourist receipts and capital investment in the tourism industry are important factors that can affect the nation’s economic growth. Utilizing Malaysian data from 1995 to 2016, the study employed the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach to examine whether the tourism-led growth is valid in this study. Empirical findings indicated that both variables have a significant positive impact on economic growth and the hypothesis of tourism-led growth is accepted in Malaysia.

The article is devoted to defining the transformations of the tourism industry under the influence of the digitalization of socio-economic relations. The tourism industry is one of those industries that have proven to be the most sensitive to digital transformation. Digital technologies affect all aspects of tourism activities - from designing creating a chain of tourist product- to forming a hotel rating in the digital space. In this context, changes in the concept of tourism activity in the context of the formation of a digital economy require the development of an appropriate scientific and methodological base. The study determined the existence of a relationship between indicators of the level of digitalization and the state of tourism development in the country. The level of digitalization of the country is proposed to be assessed by the World Digital Competitiveness Ranking (WDCR). An indicator reflecting the state of tourism development in a country is the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI). The panel sample of the study covers 63 countries in 2019. Based on the analysis, it was concluded that the further development of tourism in the context of the formation of the digital economy is impossible without focusing on the features of the introduction of digital technologies in the tourism industry. The main directions of digitalization of the tourism industry have been identified, such as the introduction of booking systems for hotel and transport services, the spread of augmented reality technologies, the development of social networks and tourist Internet resources and communication channels, etc., as well as the problems that it causes. A matrix of SWOT analysis of the development of the tourism sector of Ukraine in the digital economy is proposed. Applying an approach to identifying opportunities and threats, strengths and weaknesses in the development of the domestic tourism sector in the digital economy will allow tourism entities to implement a balanced development strategy. Key words: tourism, tourism industry, tourism product, digital economy, digitalization, digital technologies.

This article argues the case for art tourism as a new field of tourist studies. At present, art tourism is currently obscured under cultural tourism’s voluminous bounds – which are as inappropriate as they are unwieldy and overloaded. More specifically, it cannot adequately contain art tourism’s distinctive origins, forms of experience and articulation between art worlds, cities and regions and tourism industries. In part, a more dedicated research field is also needed to keep track of its rapid growth and development as a primary driver of regional and urban regeneration and for the much expanded exhibitionary complex it encompasses. As a place-changing vehicle for city life, art tourism also needs separate forms of data collection to assist in its effective planning and design. Museums that have historically catered for local art publics now need to relate increasingly to growing touring art publics. The article sets out the historical and contemporary significance of art tourism in order to identify the breadth of a new tourism agenda, as well as its connections to other disciplines including art, architecture, social anthropology, cultural economy, urban studies, museology, aesthetics and the sociology and geography of art.

The article substantiates the need to evaluate the socio-economic development of tourism in Ukraine as an important area of management effectiveness. Today, in order to successfully plan and develop tourism in the region, as well as to manage its development, it is necessary to have a clear understanding of the socio-economic importance of tourism. The positive effect of tourism development on the economy of the region is created only if tourism in the region develops comprehensively. It is noted that in the economy there are many different indicators of evaluation of the efficiency of the tourism sector, which are divided into: global (at the level of economy of the state, region) and local (for enterprises and their departments). The most important indicator of economic efficiency, which reflects the final financial results of the tourism enterprise is the profitability indicator. The calculation of quantitative indicators of tourist activity in the region provides for the calculation and analysis of indicators separately for each city. The aggregate contribution of tourism to the region’s economy includes both direct and indirect contribution. The direct impact of tourism on the economy of the region is the result of the tourist’s spending on the purchase of tourism services and goods. The indirect contribution of tourism to the economy of the region is manifested in the effect of repeating the cost of tourists to buy services and goods at a certain time and place. The general concept of socio-economic assessment of tourism development of a large tourist center (region) is investigated. It is noted that a comparative assessment of the effectiveness of tourism development should be made taking into account its impact on the economy of the city (region). The concept proposes, as a criterion for the effectiveness of tourism development, to accept the income generated by the socio-economic sphere of the region (city) from tourism activities. It is substantiated that the development of human resources is an essential element of sustainable development of tourism, as well as the region and society as a whole. Sustainable development of tourism ultimately leads to sustainable development of the entire territory, while protecting nature, culture, social and economic development. It is noted that the development of tourism services, human resources in the tourism industry is an important factor in the planning and development of human resources in the region and the country as a whole. The stages of the conceptual model of planning and development of human resources in tourism are considered. It is noted that the existing indicators of the efficiency of tourism services development to a small extent reflect the social efficiency of tourism development, and do not take into account the level of human resources development of the industry. The method of estimation of tourism development is offered, focused on the conceptual model of planning and development of human resources in tourism, by introducing an aggregate indicator – the index of development of human resources of tourism. In order to focus on the practical applicability of this approach, the index of development of human resources in tourism can be calculated on the basis of the following indicators: experience (experience) in tourism; the number of employees in tourism who have tertiary education; number of employees in higher education tourism; income of workers employed in tourism. The methodology made it possible to draw conclusions and develop recommendations for improving the quality standards of training of skilled workers of hotels and tourist companies as an important operational goal of the strategic direction of tourism development “creating an atmosphere of hospitality, improving the quality of municipal and commercial services”.

The indicators of tourism development in Crimea destinations are analyzed. They are grouped into two blocks - resulting and factor. The results of factor analysis revealed a high level of correlation between natural resources of destinations and the viability of the tourist business in the Republic of Crimea. It is also showed a high level of coherence between the result indicator "number of organized tourists" and the indicator "number of sites of cultural heritage". Conclusions of previously conducted market research of tourist preferences are confirmed. The digital economy, a new economic form based on Information and Communications Technology (ICT), has profoundly changed the tourism industry. Based on a theoretical analysis framework, this paper measured the digital economy index and urban tourism development index. It empirically tested the impact of the digital economy on urban tourism development through the benchmark regression model, panel threshold model (PTM), and spatial Durbin model (SDM) according to panel data of 284 prefecture-level and above cities in China from 2011 to 2019. The results show that the digital economy can directly drive urban tourism development. The positive impact in mid-western, non-tourist, key urban agglomerations, and low-level cities is more fully realised. Moreover, the digital economy has positive, nonlinear effects on urban tourism development, and the marginal effects are increasing. Additionally, the impact of the digital economy on the tourism development of neighbouring cities can be realised through spatial spillover effects, which are more dependent on inclusive digital finance; this impact has a boundary effect, reaching a maximum at 300 km. Furthermore, the conclusions are still valid after a robustness test and quasi-natural implementation based on smart cities. Finally, specific recommendations are proposed for the digital economy to improve urban tourism development according to the above findings.

In Russia tourism is underdeveloped and does not make a significant contribution to the economy despite its high resource potential. One of significant reasons for such a situation is lack of information in this sphere, which affects the quality of management by regional authorities. The purpose for the research is to improve the information support of regional tourism which is considered as an internal factor in the region’s socio-economic development. The research is based on general scientific methods of comparison, generalization, analysis, and synthesis. Purpose. Implementing the general theory of experience economy in the domain of tourism and attempting to answer the question whether the philosophy of tourism industry should be modified, placing the tourist’s experience in the focus of attention. Method. Desk research – studies of foreign and Polish literature. Findings. Travel has always involved strong emotions. They were treated as a “side effect” of travelling rather than an important aim of tourism enterprise activity. The development of experience economy increased the demand for unique experiences and emotions, also in tourism. Feelings, excitement, mental satisfaction with a stay at a given place are becoming more important than the standard of tourism services. This statement leads to perceiving the tourist’s experience as the foundation of the comprehensive tourist brand strategy, the aim and sense of a company’s marketing activity. Adopting a new paradigm of tourism would require devising totally new methods and tools to professionally shape tourism products, strongly saturated with emotions. In order to turn an ordinary product to an extraordinary experience (Lasalle, Britton 2003), it is necessary to reorient thinking: tourist services package → tourist experience package. Research and conclusion limitations. The paper is based on the global conception of experience economy as well as many foreign and Polish publications. It can be assumed that the presented conclusions are true for all modern tourism markets. Practical implications. Introduction. The development of the tourism industry significantly affects the development of the country's economy as a whole. Its role is determined not only in the financial contribution, but also in stimulating other related industries that perform both ancillary and independent functions. The modern Ukrainian tourist market is undergoing many changes, so one of the current problems today is the use of effective tools for finding and systematizing the necessary information to forecast the development of the tourism industry. The purpose of the paper is to define the concept of monitoring the tourism industry as a means of improving the efficiency of state regulation of the economy, proving the importance of monitoring research, identifying problems of monitoring and ways to solve them. Results. The main purpose of tourism monitoring is to assess and forecast the state of tourism. Tourist services are localized and specialize in meeting the socio-economic needs of the population directly at the municipal level and are one of the main sources of funds coming to the state budget and ensure the reproduction of social infrastructure. In order to analyze trends in tourism and tourism in Ukraine, as well as assess the socio-economic effect of the implementation of measures of state support for domestic and inbound tourism, the central executive bodies of state regions of Ukraine, carrying out executive and administrative activities in tourism, the state of the tourism industry is being monitored. Given the large recreational and tourist potential in Ukraine, there is no full-fledged system of monitoring the market of tourist services by the state. This is due to the lack of an independent executive body in the field of tourism, endowed with certain powers, and a single system of statistical indicators of the market of tourist services. Modern statistics, both at the state and regional levels, do not give a complete picture of the state of tourism. Monitoring of tourist resources, objects of the tourist industry should give a clear picture of interaction of various branches of economy of the republic for the purposes of a complex estimation of directions of improvement and efficiency of functioning of the connected branches, exclusion of interbranch disproportions which negatively affect general development. Conclusion. To increase the growth rate of the tourism industry, the formation of a positive tourist image of the region, increase its visibility requires constant monitoring of the state and development of the tourism market. Monitoring will allow tracking the trends of the tourism market in the dynamics and promptly make changes to the developed programs and plans for the development of the tourism industry, develop recommendations for their adjustment, increase the effectiveness of tourism management.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to find the model of traditional tourism governance format so that it can be used as a benchmark in the development of village tourism or sustainable hamlet tourism by re-arranging regulations based on local wisdom that support traditional tourism. Another objective is to evaluate and refine the implementation of village regulations that have been developed and implemented in the village tourism domain to determine the extent of their implications on improving the economy of people in tourist villages. This paper is authored using a qualitative approach with the orientation of literature study as an employed strategy in this study. The literature study is used in social research methodologies to trace historical data, as is found in this study. The results showed that the development of rural tourism is able to minimize the potential of urbanization from rural to urban society caused by the ability of local people to create economic activities based on tourism activities (tourism economy) in rural areas. The productive power of local potentials, including the potentials of rural areas, can be encouraged to grow and develop by utilizing the resources owned by the village, so that it can be an effective instrument in encouraging the development of socio-cultural and economic fields of rural communities. Furthermore, efforts will be encouraged to conserve and empower the potential of local culture and local wisdom values that tend to be threatened with extinction due to the heavily globalized currents that have entered rural areas. In the development of a tourist village, certain guidelines are needed so that the impact of the development of tourism activities in each rural area can be controlled. The guidelines are expected to encourage the development and management of tourist villages to be more focused, planned, and sustainable. Besides, the tourist village will be supported by all parties and it will provide significant benefits for all villagers through tourism village-based economic growth and development. Keywords: tourism village, sustainable tourism development, economic empowerment, local wisdom.

The contribution of tourism to a country’s economy is determined by country risk measures such as economic, financial and political risk. This study aimed to investigate short and long-run effects of country risk factors on international tourist arrivals and tourism revenue for the South African tourism industry. The sample period consists of monthly time series data of tourist arrivals, tourism revenue, and country risk factors from January 2004 to December 2018. Data was analysed using the Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and non-linear ARDL (NARDL) models. The findings showed that the long-run effects of country risk factors on tourist arrivals and revenue are asymmetric. Economic, financial, and political measures of country risk negatively affect tourist arrivals, however, tourism revenue responds differently to changes in these risk factors. Political risk has the highest effect on the tourism industry compared to economic and financial risk factors. Overall, this study established that both international tourist arrivals and tourism revenue are threatened by financial shocks indicating that an unconducive financial environment has long-term negative implications on the South African tourism industry.

In order to understand the contribution of tourism to the economy and the effects of possible structural changes during the tourism boom that Croatia is currently facing, the article focuses on the place and role of tourism in the Croatian economy and its impact on the output of the most relevant industries. The aim of the paper is to estimate the contribution of tourism to the gross domestic product of Croatia and to measure the multiplicative effects of tourism consumption on the different industries of the economy during a nine year period, based on a specific methodological framework, which integrates tourism satellite and input-output models in three different years. The analysis has provided an approximation of the total tourist industry contribution to the national economy, ranging from 14.2 to 16.3 percent of the gross value added of the whole of the economy. It concludes that tourism consumption has a positive effect on both tourism and non-tourism products and activities. Improvement of the quality of the research within the input-output framework requires the process of the fractionalization of input-output tables but also a more precise extraction of activities characteristic of tourism than there has previously been.
