Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of total productive maintenance (TPM) and total quality management (TQM) practices on operational performance and their inter-relationship. Design/methodology/approach The present study includes three main constructs, namely, TPM, TQM and operational performance of pharmaceutical industry. Under TPM, four constructs, namely, disciplined maintenance, information tracking, housekeeping and operator involvement has been considered with the help of literature. In TQM, four constructs, namely, quality data and reporting, product innovation, research and development (R&D) management and technology management has been considered. Out of 410 Indian pharmaceutical plants contacted for survey, 254 responses have been used in the study for analysis. The factor analysis, path model and structural equation modeling has been used to analyze the proposed framework. The results for alternate models has been studied, interpreted and reported. Finally the direct and indirect effect of TPM and TQM on operational performance has been tested and checked for proving and disproving the hypotheses. Findings TPM practices have a significant impact on plant-level operational performance. When TPM and TQM practices are coming together to achieve operational performance, then TPM is having strong influence on operational performance. TQM is having significant support from TPM to achieve operational performance. TPM impact TQM and TQM in turn helps to achieve operational performance. TPM practices impact significantly R&D, product innovation and technology management, whereas quality data and reporting is the least contributor toward TQM. This may help industry to understand implications of implementation of TPM and TQM to achieve plant-level operational performance. TPM will help to reduce the cost of quality in terms of reduced scrap and less defective products. Practical implications The present study provides the useful insights to practicing managers. In literature it has been mentioned that TQM helps in TPM implementation. In practice TPM plays a great role to achieve quality in processes and therefore in products. In turn quality products, with reduced work in process inventory, less defective products and reduced scrap helps to achieve the operational performance at plant level. TPM practices will help the organization to improve the pace of product innovation and improvement in productivity, which is critical to pharmaceutical industry. The continuous monitoring of TPM practices can help organizations to run day to day operations and maintenance requirement of each machine over a specified period of time. Originality/value The present study diagnoses the inter-dimensional linkage between TPM, TQM and operational performance. The pharmaceutical industry is complex system of advance equipment’s and processes. After human resources, the health of machines/equipment’s describe the strength of an organization. The machines require the regular maintenance to produce the products with desired specifications. The specifications in medicines and very tight, which can be achieved only if machines/testing equipment’s are updated and maintained regularly. The TPM practices will helps the plants to achieve the operational performance by having quality in processes.

This study aims to extend the argument about the association between HRM and Total Quality Management (TQM) in insurance companies in Jordan. It is argued that the consideration of TQM can be supported in terms of configuration as an effect of Human Resource Management (HRM) in the presence or absence of other HRM practices. Data for this study were collected from 24 insurance companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange and 342 employees. PLS-SEM was used to analyze the data collected through path analysis. Structural equation modeling was used to examine a causal relationship between the variables. The overall effect of HRM on TQM was explored to improve quality orientation and people criteria in insurance companies. The findings have indicated a significant and positive effect of teamwork, staffing, performance appraisals, and compensation on TQM. However, training and development have a negative, but significant impact on TQM. In addition, TQM significantly and positively affects the HRM of an organization. Performance was also positively and significantly affected by HRM. TQM is an important factor of HRM in insurance companies. AcknowledgmentThe authors are very thankful to all the associated personnel in any reference that contributed to the purpose of this study.

The study aims to explore the role of total quality management (TQM) in enhancing the service quality of the private healthcare sector in the Northern Area of West Bank Palestine. The study involves a questionnaire-based survey, private hospitals, and healthcare centers selected in North West Bank. The administrative employees are the population of the study, 200 employees were selected via stratified sampling method. By using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the findings show that all TQM factors are positively and directly related to each other in the private healthcare sector. There is a positive and direct relationship between four TQM factors (customer satisfaction, employee involvement, continual improvements, and top management commitment) and service quality, while there is a negative direct relationship between processes and service quality. TQM factors (customer satisfaction, employee involvement, continual improvements, processes, and top management commitment) explained 95% of the variance in healthcare service quality (R² = 0.950, P < 0.05). Continual improvements is the main pillar in TQM application in healthcare sector, and it is highly associated with the private healthcare processes (R² = 0.907, P < 0.01), while top management commitment is the most significant factor in improving the service quality. Full understanding and commitment by the managers across all levels and activating the effective communication between employees at all levels in the organization are the key factors of a successful TQM implementation; it helps in strengthening the teamwork efficiency. Top management is required to avoid the monotonic managerial practices, especially in the organizational processes, as it has a negative impact on the private healthcare service quality.

“School/madrasah as an educational institution is an institution that serves as an agent of change to solve the nation's problems. Therefore, in order to produce the quality of education, it is necessary to implement the concept of TQM (Total Quality Management) that in history has successfully led the business world in creating production quality best and can even exceed the satisfaction of customers standard. This study used a qualitative approach with methods of library research. The formulation of the problem involves understanding implementation of TQM, TQM in education, implementation of TQM principles in educational institutions, the pillars of TQM in educational institutions, measures the implementation of TQM in education and description of the failure in the implementation of TQM. The study results were obtained, among others; The first, implementation of total quality management (TQM) is an implementation or embodiment of a management concept that involves all components in the organization to jointly contribute to the organization's policies oriented to the improvement of product quality to customer satisfaction. Second, in educational institutions, implementation of TQM are used to improve administrative functions and operations, to manage the educational process as a whole, integrate TQM in the curriculum, the use of TQM in teaching methods in the classroom, the use of TQM for managing research and development activities. In addition, educators must be responsible for their duties proactively, they must develop a problem-solving process that makes sense and can identify and towards the main cause, capable of being the organization model and can measure what's working well and what is not, so that we will get a good system in institutional schools / madrasah. Third, in applying TQM, there are some principles that should be held, among others; focusing on consumers (users of educational services), broad involvement (teachers, staff, students, and community), their measurements, to understand education as a system, and their continuous improvement. Fourth, the five main pillars of TQM here are their products, relying on the process undertaken, the leader who moves in producing quality products, and a commitment among the leaders in the organization. Fifth, steps in implementing TQM in educational institutions include; the preparatory phase, the planning phase and the implementation phase. Sixth, the failure may occur in implementing TQM in educational institutions, if; there is a gap in the commitment of top management, one focus of attention, lack of adequate staff and support, relying solely training, the hope of obtaining results of a moment and force adopt a method that doesn’t comply with the requirement.”

Purpose This research is an effort to conceptualize the relationship between total quality management (TQM) and knowledge management in a new way. While some researchers considered knowledge management as a facilitator of TQM other scholars concerned TQM as an antecedent for knowledge management. The purpose of this paper is to propose a reciprocal causation between TQM and knowledge management. Design/methodology/approach The main focus of literature review is focusing on common practices of TQM and knowledge management. In the next step, joint variance analysis method is used to reanalyze the results of the empirical studies linking TQM to knowledge management. This approach aims to divide the multiple correlation squared and demonstrate what portion is distinctly connected to predictor variables and what portion is on account of common variance among predictors. Findings The result indicates that nearly half of all explained variances in empirical studies that considered the relationship between TQM and knowledge management disregarding the criteria are accounted for the joint variance of TQM and knowledge management processes. Therefore a reciprocal causation between TQM and knowledge management can be formulated. Originality/value This research is one of the first studies which explores the diverse results of the relationship between TQM and knowledge management from a methodological perspective.

The main objectives of management are productivity and satisfaction. Productivity itself is influenced by material-material development, technology, and human performance. The TQM concept was developed for the first time in the Industrial/business field. TQM is also known as the MMT approach or a strategy to realize the organization's vision and mission, by increasing effectiveness and productivity in an effort to win an increasingly fierce competition. Productivity in the application of TQM is in line with the following principles, (1) the main responsibilities of top management (principals, foundations); (2) quality must be focused on students and evaluation must be based on educational interests; (3) the design of the educational process and learning methods must be clear to achieve conformity to curriculum quality; (4) every educator and education staff is responsible for achieving good quality teaching; (5) quality must be a reference priority in planning should not be valued after becoming finished goods, but must be from the beginning. (since making components); (6) identification of problems with rapid solutions; (7) educational institutions strive (strive) in carrying out continuous product quality improvements; (8) links with stakeholders in implementing TQM.

This article examines a co-operative union-management approach towards Total Quality Management (TQM) by recourse to a case study from the auto components manufacturing sector. Its purpose is twofold; first, it suggests that in contrast to much critical thinking, under certain conditions TQM need not undermine trade unions. Indeed, it is argued that a more moderate trade union stance towards TQM, in some circumstances, may prove to be a more effective form of resistance than a militant one. Second, the article provides insights into the ways in which TQM reinforces existing power relations, hierarchical structures, organisational bureaucracy and inequality, rather than transforming them as TQM pundits contend. The argument, however, is not that TQM simply enhances management control in a unilinear fashion. This is because it not only poses dangers for trade unions, but also presents management with dilemmas and contradictions. TQM is understood, therefore, to be part of the continuing and complex effort by management to balance control and consent within employment, the dynamics, and outcomes of which, are uncertain and need to be empirically examined.

Management of education by creating a conducive learning environment and successfully fulfilling commitments in fulfilling promises as educational leaders. The low quality of human resources is a fundamental problem that can hamper development and national economic development. Along with the advancement of knowledge and technology, the socio-cultural life, socio-economy is increasingly unacceptable to space and time. In order to build the quality of Indonesian people who are able to challenge it, clearly it requires human resources that can be relied upon in the face of competition. TQM is a quality management system that is related to continuous improvement in improving the quality of education from various aspects of sustainability. Educational quality that is acceptable from customer needs and satisfaction. The application of TQM in school organizations is carried out as an effort to improve the quality of education in schools, thereby improving the quality of schools by improving the quality of education of high quality. The implementation of a management system is always disrupted by balance. Two parties who are pro and contra arise, accept TQM and reject TQM. TQM's refusal because it affects changes in management, namely changing established values. With this pillar, it is expected to be able to help schools improve their educational processes. The implementation of integrated Quality Management in schools is inseparable from the efforts of the principal to provide assistance to the school.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to suggest better methods for monitoring the diagnostic and treatment services for providers of public health and the management of public health services. In particular, the authors examine the construction and use of industrial quality control methods as applied to the public providers, in both the prevention and cure for infectious diseases and the quality of public health care providers in such applications including water quality standards, sewage many others. The authors suggest implementing modern multivariate applications of quality control techniques and/or better methods for univariate quality control common in industrial applications in the public health sector to both control and continuously improve public health services. These methods entitled total quality management (TQM) form the foundation to improve these public services. Design/methodology/approach – The study is designed to indicate the great need for TQM analysis to utilize methods of statistical quality control. All this is done to improve public health services through implementation of quality control and improvement methods as part of the TQM program. Examples of its use indicate that multivariate methods may be the best but other methods are suggested as well. Findings – Multivariate methods provide the best solutions when quality and reliability tests show indications that the variables observed are inter-correlated and correlated over time. Simpler methods are available when the above factors are not present. Research limitations/implications – Multivariate methods will provide for better interpretation of results, better decisions and smaller risks of both Type I and Type II errors. Smaller risks lead to better decision making and may reduce costs. Practical implications – Analysts will improve such things as the control of water quality and all aspects of public health when data are collected through experimentation and/or periodic quality management techniques. Social implications – Public health will be better monitored and the quality of life will improve for all especially in places where public development is undertaking rapid changes. Originality/value – The manuscript is original because it uses well known and scientific methods of analyzing data in area where data collection is utilized to improve public health.

Inter-variable correlation in the implementation of TotalQuality Management on the quality culture is quite strong (b) There are significant effects between variables in the implementation of Total QualityManagementconsisting of focuses on employee, management commitment, training, employee empowering, and use of statistic devices partially on quality culture variable, meanwhile the sustainable improvement and performance comparison do not influence significantly on quality culture variable. Thus, the second hypothesis of this research is rejected (c) The training variable provides dominant effects on the quality culture variable. Thus the third hypothesis of this research is rejected.

Purpose – Multinational corporations face a more intense competence and a higher number of changes in the different countries they operate. In this regard, organizational learning and quality management are key elements that could help them to survive in the market. Convinced by the numerous benefits and competitive potential of total quality management (TQM) programmes, corporations have promoted its implementation. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the interaction between these programmes and organizational learning, more precisely with exploitation and exploration capabilities, in order to understand the way in which quality management programmes could help to develop learning in the companies. Design/methodology/approach – Structural equation modelling was used to test the proposed model. The sample comprised 111 medium-sized Spanish companies, with four different responses each. Constructs are measured with Likert scales previously tested in the literature. Findings – The results show that TQM is positively and strongly related to both exploitation and exploration and that the relationship between TQM and exploitation is higher. Concerning the effects of exploitation and exploration on firm performance; results of the analysis show that only exploration capability positively affects organizational performance. It is also confirmed a positive effect of a TQM system in performance. Originality/value – This research covers a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between organizational learning and TQM, particularly with the concepts of exploitation and exploration in the context of multinational companies.

There have been five characteristics of a qualified school such as focusing on the customer, total engagement, measurement, commitment, and continuous improvement. Every educational institution including Islamic boarding school (IBS) is required to provide the best services to its customers. In this way, IBS need to be supported by a good management system; the existence of a regular mindset (administrative thinking), the implementation of regular activities (administrative behavior), attitude to the task activities well (administrative attitude), and so forth. To answer the various problems that exist in the educational environment the management should have an Integrated or Total Quality Management (TQM). One of its goals is to transform a school institution into a sincere team, without conflict and internal competition to achieve a single goal of satisfying all customers. TQM will provide educators professional solutions to meet today’s challenges and the future. It is because TQM can be used to build alliance between education, business and government. TQM can also shape the community responsive to the changing demands of society in this era of globalization. Besides, TQM form a responsive school and is able to respond to changes that occur in the field of education in order to give satisfaction to stakeholder.

In addition, the author employed repeated usage of the word "quality," by itself or in terms that border upon becoming cliches. Further, the paper described a dedicated infrastructure piled on a regular organization in the form of a special office and various committees. Barely afloat amid the promotion of TQM, per se, was the simple truth, "quality improvement comes from process improvement."

Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine the main total quality management (TQM) factors adopted and the respective results achieved by local authorities – municipalities. Determining the degree to which TQM influences the respective results is also an aim of the present study. Design/methodology/approach A research study was designed to be carried out in Greek local authorities – municipalities, 125 of which were approached through interviews with chief executive officers (CEOs) based on a structured questionnaire. The TQM practices and results identified in the literature were used as measured variables of the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and linear regression analyses were applied for the purpose of the study. Findings The TQM philosophy is not highly adopted by the Greek local authorities participating in the present study. Moreover, the Greek local authorities do not seem to derive significant TQM benefits. Finally, adopting TQM strongly and positively influences, first, operational and quality performance of the local authorities; second, citizen satisfaction and society results; and third, employee satisfaction. Research limitations/implications Subjective data were collected from the CEOs of a small sample of local authorities operating in a European Union country, under circumstances of financial crisis. Based on these limitations, future research studies are recommended. Practical implications Areas for improvement are identified for a local authority to develop a robust TQM model, approach business excellence and derive significant benefits. Originality/value This is the first research study in the field of TQM to be conducted at city-level administration in Greece.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated conceptual framework of total quality management and corporate social responsibility.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on stakeholder theory, which stresses the satisfaction of all stakeholders. Therefore, companies generate profit for their shareholders by producing high quality products and services to emphasize human dignity and to satisfy their employees without harming people and the natural environment.FindingsThe results of the study suggest an integrated conceptual framework by identifying the critical factors that are parallel between quality management and social responsibility to satisfy key stakeholders’ demands.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is conceptual in nature, and empirical research is needed to identify the critical factors that promote the application of TQM and CSR practices, which are limited.Practical implicationsThe proposed conceptual framework may facilitate the management of an organization to evaluate its quality and social programs and will highlight problem areas that can be improved. This study contributes to the literature on TQM and CSR and captures the important factors for effective TQM and CSR practices. The conceptual framework will help researchers and firms to recognize TQM and CSR initiatives and establish a strengthened relationship between corporate strategy and social conditions.Originality/valuePrevious studies have been conducted separately in the areas of TQM and CSR, and there are still not sufficient number of studies to simultaneously integrate quality management and social responsibility. Thus, there is a critical research gap, which raises the question of how the integration of TQM and CSR practices can be developed. There is a need to recognize the mechanism through which the specific element of CSR would be included as an implicit and/or explicit aspect or whether it should be addressed along with TQM. Therefore, this study proposes an integrated conceptual framework that can be applied to the broader issues of responsibility rather than just quality.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to present a set of critical factors for total quality management (TQM) and supply chain management (SCM) practices through an extensive literature review; and, second, to identify the relationships among them by comparing the identified TQM and SCM practices in order to explore the concept of supply chain quality management (SCQM). Design/methodology/approach To meet the goals of this work, a review of published quality research papers was carried out. For this, the authors identified papers on TQM and SCM practices and observed how these practices improve the business performance of organizations. Further, on the basis of identified practices, a conceptual model of SCQM was developed. Findings The results presented a set of six critical factors each for TQM and SCM practices. Further, it was found that management support and commitment, customer focus, information and supplier partnership are the most common practices found in both TQM and SCM practices. The integration of TQM and SCM (SCQM) throughout the supply chain has the strongest impact on the organizational performance. Research limitations/implications The study used data from various research papers of reputed journals which considered the study of India’s manufacturing industry as well as other countries, which may not provide a clear picture. However, this can be overcome by applying the findings of this paper to collect data from Indian manufacturing industry in future studies. Practical implications Indian manufacturing industry can improve its competitive image through the synergy of TQM and SCM. The result of this paper will help in providing a greater understanding of identified TQM and SCM practices that will lead to the successful implementation of TQM and SCM strategies to enhance business performance in terms of the improved levels of customer service. Originality/value Much of the attention is given on TQM and SCM practices, and very few studies have been undertaken to integrate TQM and SCM practices. But as far as the authors know, there is no study undertaken to integrate TQM and SCM practices in India for the manufacturing class. Therefore, this study compares TQM and SCM practices and considers their integration and can be thus treated as filling a gap in the extant literature. Therefore, the findings of this review paper will contribute in future research.

Although the TQM concept in higher education is still in controversy, this study is expected to give contribution to the creative thought. The realization of total quality, indeed, is easier to discuss than to implement. The implementation of TQM is interesting and binding as well because it insists fundamental change and reform of the culture of traditional organization. Besides, it also insists commitment and totality that must be realized seriously.
