Streszczenie:
Previous studies have suggested that a toddler stunting is closely related to maternal characteristics. Working mothers, as a group, are vulnerable to having a stunted toddler. The present research aimed to analyze factors related to stunting incidence in toddlers with working mothers in Indonesia. The study sampled 44,071 toddlers with working mothers. The final stage used a multinomial logistic regression test. The study found that working mothers living in rural areas have a higher probability of having stunted or severely stunted toddlers. Maternal age partially affects the incidence of stunted toddlers in Indonesia. Mothers in the ≤19 age group are 1.461 (95% CI 1.140–1.872) times more likely than those in the ≥45 group to have a severely stunted toddler. Those who were never married were 1.433 (95% CI 1.006–2.043) times more likely than those who were divorced/widowed to have a severely stunted toddler. A married mother was 0.734 (95% CI 0.617–0.872) times less likely to have a severely stunted toddler than a divorced/widowed mother. Better education is protective against working mothers having stunted toddlers. Moreover, the present study found that the toddler’s age determined the incidence of stunted toddlers. This study concluded that there are five variables related to stunting incidence in toddlers with working mothers in Indonesia: residence, age, marital status, education, and toddler age.

ABSTRACTOne of common health problem among toddlers in Indonesia is diarrhea. Diarrhea is a disease that has risk to cause death. The main causes of death in diarrhea is dehydration by the loss of fluids and electrolytes through feces. Based on monthly reports of diarrhea at Kalijudan Health Center (Indonesian: Puskesmas Kalijudan) in 2013, there were some toddlers aged 1–4 years old that suffered dehydration due to diarrhea. This research aimed to analyze the relationship between maternal characteristics and knowledge and the incidence of toddler dehydration due to diarrhea at Kalijudan Health Center, Surabaya. This research was an analytic observational research with case-control design. Subjects of the research were drawn from the population using simple random sampling. Number of samples obtained was 30 individuals for case group and another 30 for control group. The independent variables were the characteristics of the toddler’s mother (including age, education, work statu, family income) and knowledge of the toddler’s mother. Primary data were collected using questionnaires. Analysis of the data was done using Chi Square statistical test. The results of bivariate analysis, it was found that the variables associated with the incidence of diarrheal dehydration among toddlers were mother’s work status (p = 0.010), and knowledge of the toddler’s mother (p = 0.002). There were no relationship among age of toddlers’ mother (p = 0.779), mother’s education (p = 0.797), and family income (p = 0.430). At the Toddler Posyandu or Posyandu Balita, the health workers and mothers and toddlers are possible to meet, and they may communicate together to monitor toddlers growth and development. This photo essay records our health service communication in monitoring toddler growth and development in the New Normal at Posyandu Hidup Baru Desa Kaong, Kecamatan Upau, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The activities include counseling, height and weight checking for toddles, and immunization. The visits cannot be done virtually, since we must directly provide examination of nutritional status, immunization, counseling and others monitoring to the mothers and toddlers following the standard protocols, and not all mothers of toddlers have the measuring devices. Since the checking and monitoring have been done during the Covid 19 pandemic, posyandu must apply health protocols when communicating and providing health service to the mothers and toddlers. Thus, all participants presented at the posyandu will not get infected with covid 19, and the toddler growth and development can be monitored regularly.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of volubility of toddlers with cochlear implants (CIs) and their parental verbal responsiveness (PVR) in comparison with toddlers with typical hearing (TH), and to explore the relationships between toddlers’ volubility and PVR in each group. Methods: 12 pairs of toddlers with CIs and their parents and 14 pairs of toddlers with TH and their parents participated in this study. This study utilized the Face to Face/Still Face paradigm to examine for the differences of the toddlers’ volubility and PVR between the two groups. Results: Toddlers with CIs produced less vocalizations than toddlers with TH. However, there was not a significant difference in the vocalization time per minute between the two groups. Parents of toddlers with CIs used less verbal responsiveness, which was positively associated with toddlers’ language development, than parents of toddlers with TH. In the CI group, the frequency of the PVR to toddler’s focus of attention was significantly correlated with the frequency and time of toddlers’ vocalization. Conclusion: Toddlers with CIs showed lower levels of volubility than toddlers with TH during the mother-toddler interaction. Parents of toddlers with CIs responded less frequently to their toddler’s communicative intentions and behaviors than did parents of toddlers with TH. These findings suggest that speech-language pathologists should educate the parents of toddlers with CIs to promote high-quality parental responsiveness.

Various studies related to nutrition state that, nutritional status can be caused by medical conditions, socioeconomic status of the family which includes mother's education, mother's work status, family income, household food outcome, and socio-cultural environment. Nevertheless, secondary data in working area of Tambelan Sampit’s Public Health Center, toddlers aged 0-59 months were 85% in good nutrition. This research aimed to explore, analyse, and describe the positive behaviour of housewives in form of parenting’ feeding habits, parenting’s cleaning habits and parenting’s health service with toddler’s good nutrition event from poor family in Tambelan Sampit Urban Village of Pontianak Timur District of Pontianak City. The type of this research was qualitative and the samples were 5 toddlers with good nutrition status from poor family. The samples were taken using purposive sampling, which the housewives were chosen selectively, and they must be the best housewives, would be selected as the research samples. The result showed that positive behaviour of parenting’s feeding habits for toddlers was less eating but it was done regularly, giving additional foods, and giving suplementary vitamines. Parenting’s cleaning habits involved washing hands before feeding the toddler, showering before the feeding, and taking care of the cleanliness of house and environment. While the positive behaviour of parenting’s health service was such as coming to the Integrated Healthcare Center regularly to weigh and to observe the toddler’s health every month, and if the toddler gets sick he or she must be brought to Public Health Center in order to get treatment. This research suggests to improve socialization about nutrition awareness family to increase mother’s knowledge in feeding especially for toddler. It also involves the importance sanitation and hygene, joins the Integrated Healthcare Center regularly, socializes positive behaviours of toddler’s mother from poor family which has been successfully maintained and stayed out of lack nutrition issue on toddlers by health staffs through various activities in Integrated Healthcare Center.

Streszczenie:
In this thesis I investigated the relationship between fathers’ antisocial and physically aggressive behaviour and toddlers’ behaviour. Previous work has largely ignored fathers or seen fathers only as an influence on mothers and little is known about fathers’ aggressiveness. Families were recruited for the Cardiff Child Development Study (CCDS), which is a prospective longitudinal study of parents and their children. Parents were interviewed about their own behaviours during pregnancy and the children were assessed at intervals until 33 months of age (Chapter 2 describes the study design). Chapter 3 examined associations between the antisocial behaviour of the couple. Although men committed more antisocial behaviours than women, there were associations between partners’ rates of both violent and non-violent antisocial behaviours. The relationship between fathers’ antisocial behaviours and young children’s behaviour was explored in Chapter 4. Fathers’ non-violnt antisocial symptoms were associated with mothers’ reports of toddlers’ aggressiveness. Fathers’ physical aggressiveness was associated with infants’ contentious behaviours, toddlers’ aggressiveness and observations of toddlers’ use of force against a peer. When physical aggressiveness was considered more closely a component relating specifically to toddlers’ physical aggressiveness was identified. Fathers’ physical aggressiveness was associated with toddlers’ physical aggressiveness, which suggests a homotypic continuity in physical aggressiveness between fathers and toddlers. All of the associations between fathers’ and toddlers’ behaviours remained significant after controlling for the mothers’ behaviours. Thus, fathers’ behaviours provide unique contributions towards toddlers’ behaviours independently of the mothers’ behaviours. Since antisocial fathers are more likely to be absent fathers Chapter 5 examined the relationship between fathers’ physical aggressiveness and father absence. Although father absence was associated with fathers’ physical aggressiveness, it did not explain the association between fathers’ and toddlers’ physical aggressiveness. Together these findings show that fathers are important to study in their own right, rather than as an influence on mothers.

Play is a significant part of childhood. Typically developing children exhibit a wide range of interests within their play behavior, but children with autism do not. The purpose of this study was to design and implement an assessment tool that will capture the constellation of behaviors indicating play interests in young children. The Early Play Interests Assessment (EPIA) includes categories of play behavior and their components behaviors. Additionally, measures of child affect were built into the EPIA. All behaviors were observed under various environmental conditions. The results show that the EPIA was useful in observing toddlers' play behavior within behavioral categories and components and in assessing the interactions among these measures of play interests. The results are discussed in relation to the importance of creating observational systems to quantify play interests in typical and atypical children and for establishing a link between the information gathered in assessment and the planning and implementation of autism interventions.

Streszczenie:
Language plays an important role in driving visual attention. The aim of this thesis is to gain a better understanding of how language may mediate visual attention in toddlers, who begin to learn about the world through language communication. In Part I of the thesis, I examine the time course and order in which different types of stored linguistic representations are activated during spoken-word recognition. In Experiments 1-4, I demonstrate that the four-picture adult visual world paradigm (VWP) in combination with growth curve analysis and mixed effects modelling (Mirman, 2014), is a suitable tool for measuring language-mediated cognitive processes in toddlers. The results indicate that, like adults, toddlers extract phonological information faster than semantic information during spoken-word recognition, and that these differences hold irrespective of whether the semantic information is taxonomic or thematic in character. Moreover, phonological effects are related to the toddler's overall vocabulary size, suggesting a role for emerging phonological organisation and/or word familiarity in the phonological decoding of words. The results of the study are compatible with an interactive view of language-mediated visual attention in toddlers whereby implicitly generated phonological codes and speech-driven phonological encoding work together to support referent identification. In Part II of the thesis, I investigate how language as an attentional set may guide toddlers' visual attention. Specifically, I examine the role of dis- tractor inhibition during language-mediated visual attention using a negative priming (NP) procedure. NP refers to the impaired response observed when a participant has to respond to a stimulus identity or location that they previously ignored (i.e., identity or location NP). Any observed NP effect would suggest that language-mediated selective attention involves inhibition of response towards the distractor. In Experiment 5 (six conditions), participants were shown trials each containing a prime phase, followed by a probe phase. In both phases, participants heard the target picture being named and were allowed to look freely at the pictures. In all conditions, participants were 'on-task' and showed greater than chance target preference after target label onset. No location NP effect was observed when the prime stimuli were repeated in the same locations in the probe phase, or when the probe stimuli were novel. However, location NP was observed when the prime stimuli were repeated in swapped locations in the probe phase. That is, there was significantly less target preference in the ignored location-attended identity condition. Rather than by distractor inhibition, these results could be better explained by the mismatching of feature-location-response bindings in the prime and probe phases. These findings indicate that language drives the encoding of temporary episodic representations of events, which are stored, retrieved and compared with later events, and may mediate visual attention. In sum, this thesis demonstrates that language-mediated visual attention involves the activation and retrieval of 'higher level' representations, which are then matched and integrated with the 'lower level' visual and auditory inputs. While Part I demonstrates how relatively long-term lexical-semantic knowledge mediates visual attention, Part II demonstrates how recently encountered events are encoded into episodic representations, retrieved and in turn, influence mediated visual attention.

Streszczenie:
AbstractDiscussion on toddlers’ outdoor play practices in various cultural spaces is rare in literature. In Australia, toddlers’ physical development and well-being is promoted but less attention is given to cultural nuances of outdoor play. We ask the question: How does outdoor play impact on toddlers’ imagination and cultural formation? Conducted in three Australian long day care (LDC) sites, an ethically approved project “Studying babies and toddlers: Cultural worlds and transitory relationships” examines the process of three Australian toddlers’ outdoor enculturation. The concepts of imagination and play from Vygotsky’s cultural-historical theory are drawn upon in relation to Hedegaard’s institutional practices model, to link contextual relations between society, community and family. Cultural formation processes in toddlers’ outdoor play, we argue, are more completely understood when daily life across home and local community is acknowledged. Data findings illustrate complexity of movement and experimentations in cultural conditions, where different spaces hold possibilities for imaginative transformations in toddler’s play. Implications suggest toddlers’ imaginative and culturally responsive outdoor play aligns with availability of interested adult/peers, shared family and community values, and varied local spaces. In this way, affective and dynamic outdoor interactions imbue cultural formation of toddler’s play and imagination with local personal meaning.

ABSTRACT Background: Stunting, a chronic malnutrition of children, remains a global health concern. In Indonesia, around 37% (almost 9 million) of children under five are stunted. The difference in the prevalence of stunting in coastal and urban areas needs attention for the comprehensive handling of stunting. This study aimed to analyze the comparison of nutritional status in coastal and urban areas for toddlers aged 1-2 years. Subjects and Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at coastal and urban areas, Tarakan, North Kalimantan from October to November 2016. A total of 94 toddlers aged 1-2 years was selected by total sampling. The dependent variables were dietary intake and nutritional status. The independent variables were living in coastal and urban areas. The data were collected using questionnaires. The data were analyzed by independent t-test. Results: Mean of nutritional status of toddlers in urban area was higher (Mean= -4.24; SD= 1.27) than in coastal area (Mean= -3.17; SD= 1.14), and it was statistically significant (p= 0.002). There was no significant difference in dietary intake of toddlers between coastal and urban areas. Conclusion: There is significant difference of nutritional status in toddlers aged 1-2 years between coastal and urban areas.
