Here, we demonstrate the impact of ferromagnetic layer coating on controlling the magneto-optical response. We found that the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) signal and TMOKE hysteresis loops of Ni80Fe20 thin layers coated with a Cr layer show a strong dependence on the thickness of the Cr layer and the incidence angle of the light. The transmission and reflection spectra were measured over a range of incidence angles and with different wavelengths so as to determine the layers’ optical parameters and to explain the TMOKE behavior. The generalized magneto-optical and ellipsometry (GMOE) model based on modified Abeles characteristic matrices was used to examine the agreement between the experimental and theoretical results. A comprehensive theoretical and experimental analysis reveals the possibility to create a TMOKE suppression/enhancement coating at specific controllable incidence angles. This has potential for applications in optical microscopy and sensors.

We demonstrate experimentally that a one-dimensional array of silicon nanowires periodically placed on a nickel substrate enhances the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) compared to a nickel film. The enhancement mechanism is associated with the excitation of two types of resonances: multipole Mie resonances in each nanowire and surface lattice resonances (SLRs) emerging from the periodic arrangement of the nanowires. The maximal TMOKE values reached up to 1.9 % and 2.6 % due to the excitation of SLR and a magnetic dipole resonance, respectively. When the SLR is excited, the spectral width of the TMOKE enhancement is narrower compared to the case of the magnetic dipole resonance.

Abstract We demonstrated the sensitivity enhancement for magneto-optical surface plasmon resonance (MOSPR) using noble/ferromagnetic metals multilayers. The proposed structure is based on the Kretschmann configuration in the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) methods with the FeCu superlattices (SLs) as magneto-plasmonic materials and gelatin as biomolecules analyte. The dielectric constants of the FeCu SLs are taken from first principles calculation, which is performed by using a full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. The important role of the hybridization process in optical transitions has been identified, and it can be modulated by adjusting the thickness of superlattices. The dependence of the reflectivity on the dielectric constant is performed by 4×4 transfer matrix methods. It is found that the minimum reflectivity directly influences the slope of angular spectra, with a maximum slope of TMOKE signal is 12.23/degree. The change in the gelatin’s refractive index results in TMOKE signal response, then the enhancement of the sensitivity of the MOSPR system can be shown.

We study how to enhance the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) of ultra-thin magnetic dielectric films through the excitation of strong magnetic resonances on metasurface with a metal nanowire array stacked above a metal substrate with an ultra-thin magnetic dielectric film spacer. The plasmonic hybridizations between the Au nanowires and substrate result in magnetic resonances. The periodic arrangement of the Au nanowires can excite propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the metal surface. When the SPPs and the magnetic resonances hybridize, they can strongly couple to form two strong magnetic resonances, which are explained by a coupled oscillator model. Importantly, benefitting from the strong magnetic resonances, we can achieve a large TMOKE signal up to 26% in the ultra-thin magnetic dielectric film with a thickness of only 30 nm, which may find potential applications in nanophotonics, magnonics, and spintronics.

We demonstrate a concept for the giant enhancement of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) using bulk plasmon polariton (BPP) modes in non-magnetic multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs). Since the BPP modes are excited through the attenuated total reflection (ATR) mechanism, using a Si-based prism-coupler, we considered a single dielectric magneto-optical (MO) spacer between the prism and the HMM. The working wavelength was estimated, using the effective medium approach for a semi-infinite dielectric-plasmonic multilayer, considering the region where the system exhibits type II HMM dispersion relations. Analytical results, by means of the scattering matrix method (SMM), were used to explain the physical principle behind our concept. Numerical results for giant TMOKE values (close to their maximum theoretical values, ±1) were obtained using the finite element method (FEM), applying the commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics. Our proposal comprises a simple and experimentally feasible structure that enables the study of MO phenomena in HMMs, which may find application in future nanostructured magnetoplasmonic metamaterials for active nanophotonic devices.

Les capteurs d'indice de réfraction sont très largement employés dans l'industrie et la santé. Ils trouvent des applications aussi bien en contrôle de qualité que pour la détection d'espèces en chimie et biochimie. Si l'utilisation de plasmons de surface pour ces applications est très répandue, ceux-ci souffrent néanmoins de défauts, parmi lesquels de faibles facteurs de qualité. Plusieurs solutions existent pour résoudre ce problème, tels que le couplage avec d'autres modes de résonance ou l'utilisation d'effets magnéto-optiques.Dans ce travail, nous nous intéressons aux modes de Tamm optiques, aussi appelés plasmons de Tamm, et à leurs avantages pour la réalisation de capteurs d'indice de réfraction. Nous étudions dans un premier temps numériquement les modes de Tamm pouvant êtres excités en utilisant une surface structurée, composée d'un réseau de nanorubans, ainsi que l'influence sur la sensibilité de l'utilisation d'un tel réseau.Nous confrontons ensuite ces résultats numériques à l'expérience en fabriquant et en caractérisant un capteur d'indice de réfraction basé sur ce principe.Nous explorons pour finir l'utilisation d'effets magnéto-optiques (TMOKE) pour améliorer ce capteur, de façon analogue aux travaux menés dans le cadre des capteurs plasmoniques
Refractive index sensors are widely used in industry and health sectors. They find applications in quality control as well as for species detection in chemistry and biochemistry. Although the use of surface plasmons for these applications is widespread, they nevertheless suffer from shortcomings, including low quality factors. Several solutions exist to solve this problem, such as coupling with other resonance modes or using magneto-optical effects.In this work, we focus on optical Tamm modes, also called Tamm plasmons, and their advantages for the realization of refractive index sensors. We first study numerically the Tamm modes that can be excited on a structured surface, using a nanoribbon grating, as well as the influence on the sensitivity of such a grating.We then confront these numerical results with experience by fabricating and characterizing a refractive index sensor based on this principle.We finally explore the use of magneto-optical effects (TMOKE) to improve this sensor, in a way similar to the work carried out in the context of plasmonic sensors

There is currently a high interest of replacing traditional wired networks with wireless technology. Wireless communications can provide several advantages for process industries with aspect to exibility, maintenance and installation. The WirelessHART protocol provides a standardized wireless technology for large automation networks that explore wireless communication. However, wireless networks introduce time delays and losses in the communication system, which denes requirements for designing estimators and controllers that can tolerate and compensate for the losses and delays. This thesis consists of several contributions. First, we develop tools for analyzing the delay and loss probabilities in WirelessHART networks with unreliable transmission links. For given network topology, routing and transmission schedule the developed tools can be used to determine the latency distributions of individual packets and quantify that a packet will arrive within a prescribed deadline. Secondly, we consider estimation and control when sensor and control messages are sent over WirelessHART networks. The network losses and latencies are modelled and compensated for by timevarying Kalman lters and LQG controllers. Both optimal controllers, of high implementation complexity, and simple suboptimal schemes are considered. The control strategies are evaluated on a simulation model of a flotation process in a Boliden mine where the wired sensors of the existent solution are replaced by a WirelessHART network scheduled for time-optimal data collection. Finally, we implement a WirelessHART-compliant sensor on a Tmote sky device and perform real experiments of wireless control on a water tank process.

In this study, we have investigated the effectiveness of building “Fault-Tolerant Backbone” for data dissemination in Tmote Sky sensor networks. For the real sensors, the message transmission may be instable and the transmission range for a fixed output power may vary in the real environment. This paper describes a mechanism to implement a stable system that overcomes the unstable factors in the real environment. Tmote Sky sensors provide programmable and adjustable output power for data transmission. Users can control adequate transmission power for each sensor. Based on our measurements of Tmote Sky, there is a steadily-transmitted distance for every power level. For certain power level, successfully-transmitted ratio was approximately 100 percent when the distance between sender and receiver was less than the steadily-transmitted distance. In accordance with the character on Tmote Sky, the ideas of fault-tolerant backbone has been made for constructing a fault-tolerant and stable system for Tmote Sky. The fault-tolerant backbone protocol builds up a connected backbone, in which nodes are endowed with a sleep/awake schedule. Practical experimental results reveal the fast fault recovery and high successfully-transmitted ratio can be fulfilled in the realistic system. The following goals in the implementation have been reached, including self- configurable fault-tolerant groups, automatic backbone construction, automatic failure recovery, and route repair.

Tmote Sky sensors provide programmable and adjustable output power for transmission. Users can control needed transmission power for each sensor. However, the transmission range for a fixed power changes inconsistently due to the interferences, such as obstacles and other wireless signals. Therefore, the communication between sensors is disconnected sometimes. To solve the problem, this thesis demonstrates the implementation of three recovery schemes. As Tmote Sky sensors detect communication disconnection, sensors will increase their transmission power for a certain of time, ask backup nodes for help, or broadcast control messages for cooperation. Practical experimental results reveal the amount of lost packets can be reduced with a little additional energy.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) becomes popular due to the rapid development of IT, MEMS and IC technology. Features such as low electricity consumption, low cost, small size, self-adjustable and capable of wireless communication make it a good tool to develop ambient intelligent system. The objective of this research is to investigate on PAR and TSR light sensors (S1087, S1087-01, Hamamatsu, Japan) and temperature (T) /relative humidity (RH) sensors (SHT 11, Sensirion AG, Switzerland) on Tmote Sky, which is a commercially available ZigBee based (following IEEE 802.15.4 protocol) WSN related product of Moteiv company of US. Portable spectroradiometer (LI-1800, LICOR, USA), standard thermometer (Tomei, Japan) and saturated solutions of 9 types of salt were used as standards to validate the data measured by PAR, TSR, T and RH sensors of Tmote Sky. Latter 2 were also validated with HOBO T/RH data logger, which is popular in environmental measurement. Results of light measurements shows Tmote Sky is quite accurate when measuring indoor light or LED panels used. However, for outdoor solar radiation measurement, the sensors fail to provide accurate readings. Some improvements such as a transparent film with the given transmittance need to be used to constraint sensor output current below 4 μA. Results of Temperature measurement show 3 to 4 degree C difference. Under 25 degree C and 11.30~93.58 % RH range provided by saturated solution of 9 types of salt, the error of RH sensor on Tmote Sky range from 8 to -26 %. The arrangement of PAR, TSR light sensors and T/RH sensors closely connected is a poor design. Light measurement requires direct impact of light beam and this will affect accuracy of T/RH sensors. In a sunny day, the error can be as large as 16.3 degree C and 17.4% RH. When measuring T and RH, prevent direct radiation is needed thus light sensors with certain light guide is needed to provide accurate readings.

A cidadania é o tema de fundo desta investigação. É um assunto que tem vindo a ganhar destaque nos diversos espaços em que nos movemos, no seio da escola, da família, da cidade e no mundo. Nesta sociedade onde todos reconhecem a insegurança, fruto da desordem política, económica e social, são muitos os que apelam à mudança, rumo a uma sociedade mais justa, com mais civismo e com mais valores. A escola não escapa a este estado de angústia e nela se reflectem todas as dificuldades, as injustiças e as carências que vitimam os mais desprotegidos. O presente trabalho, elaborado no âmbito da dissertação de mestrado apresentada à Universidade Portucalense, aborda a questão dos impactos na escola, ao nível das atitudes/comportamentos cívicos, resultantes da implementação de um projecto europeu numa escola do ensino básico. A investigação foi feita por uma docente dessa escola, facto que lhe possibilitou uma grande proximidade relativamente a todos os processos que o projecto europeu despoletou. A sua experiência, como docente do ensino básico, juntamente com a reflexão que fez, sustentada pela revisão de literatura existente sobre o tema da cidadania, permitiram-lhe encetar este estudo e conhecer melhor o tipo de impactos observados na escola. A metodologia usada baseou-se no estudo de caso e teve em conta fontes variadas de informação. Foi um estudo de natureza qualitativa e essencialmente interpretativa que lhe permitiu uma compreensão mais alargada do caso em análise. As conclusões permitem-nos percepcionar mudanças na escola, essencialmente ao nível da maior consciencialização, por parte dos alunos, para a necessidade de uma vida mais ecológica e ainda pelo aumento de comportamentos favoráveis a uma cidadania activa, participativa, cooperante e respeitadora dos outros. “Citizenship” is the main issue of this paper. The topic has been growing in interest and impact within the school walls and families and everywhere around us. In our modern societies the insecurity caused by the political, social and economic conditions leads to a strong desire for a change. Many of us are eager for a change in order to reach a fair society where civic attitudes and moral values become a real reference to all. Schools have to deal with the social injustices and financial needs that affect the lower strata of society. This paper, which was written concerning the master´s degree presented to Portucalense University, aims to evaluate the impact of an European Project implemented in a primary school on students’ attitudes and behaviour. The fact that the research work was done by a teacher teaching in the school where the European Project was implemented eased the access to all the steps of the process. The teacher´s experience along with the reflections supported by scientific literature on the topic “citizenship” allowed her to undertake this task and learn more about the kind of impact made by the project on the school community. The study-case was the method chosen by the teacher to develop her research work and a great variety of information sources were taken into consideration as well. This paper aimed a qualitative assessment of the issue and that allowed a deeper understanding of the topic. The conclusions show that changes happened, in particular, when we talk about the students’ acquaintance of the importance of ecology in their lives as well as the importance of adopting a behaviour that will lead to a more active and cooperative citizenship.

O constructo de que os professores sobressaem como os principais atores educativos no ambiente de mudança e renovação na educação permanece nas organizações escolares. A implementação de um Novo Estatuto da Carreira Docente transportou substanciais alterações e a assunção de novas funções por todos os sujeitos que possuem a missão de ensinar, numa escola eficaz, em que a qualidade impere e comande qualquer projeto concebido. No ambiente de uma escola reflexiva, orientada com base na comunicação e na cooperação, destacam-se as estruturas de Gestão Escolar Intermédia, mormente os departamentos curriculares, entendidos como os principais contextos de interação no interior da escola. O papel do seu coordenador considera-se basilar no desenvolvimento organizacional de qualquer comunidade educativa, sendo-lhe, atualmente, exigidas funções mais relevantes ao nível da liderança dos seus departamentos, da coordenação e da supervisão dos seus pares. Neste contexto, a temática deste estudo focaliza a figura do coordenador de departamento curricular, enquanto gestor intermédio, na “escola do diretor”, importando assinalar as suas perceções e as daqueles que operam no seu grupo, identificando, concomitantemente, aspetos facilitadores ou obstativos no desempenho das suas funções. Para analisarmos as conceções e representações dos coordenadores de departamento curricular e dos professores sobre o cargo de Gestão Escolar Intermédia em investigação, utilizámos um modelo de investigação que se insere, maioritariamente, num paradigma quantitativo, adotando como instrumento de recolha de dados o inquérito por questionário. Neste âmbito, construímos dois questionários, um para os coordenadores e outro para os professores, que contemplaram também uma questão aberta, analisada qualitativamente, concretizando a respetiva categorização das respostas obtidas. Operacionalizámo-los, no ano letivo de 2010/2011, aprofessores do segundo e terceiro ciclos do Ensino Básico e do Ensino Secundário de três escolas de um dos concelhos do distrito de Viseu. Os resultados obtidos, de um modo geral, sugerem que os inquiridos se mostram conscientes das funções de um coordenador de departamento curricular, na escola atual, nas vertentes de desenvolvimento organizacional, de liderança, de coordenação e de supervisão, divergindo as suas perceções em algumas variáveis. Concluímos que as práticas de gestão intermédia na escola se encontram num percurso sólido, fundamentado, exigente, mas solicitador de uma contínua formação especializada na área de Orientação Educativa. The construct that teachers stand out as the main actors in the educational environment of change and renewal in education remains in school organizations. The implementation of a New Teaching Career Statute transported substantial changes and the assumption of new functions for all subjects that have the mission of teaching, in an effective school, where quality prevails and commands any conceived project. In the environment of a reflective school, guided by the communication and cooperation, there are the structures of Middle School Administration, especially those of the curricular departments, defined as the major contexts of interaction within the school. The role of their coordinators is considered fundamental in the organizational development of any educational community, being, currently, required to them the most relevant functions to the level of leadership of their department, coordination and supervision of their peers. In this context, the theme of this study focuses on the figure of the department coordinator, as an intermediate manager in the "school of the director," emphasizing his perceptions and the ones from those operating in his group, identifying, concomitantly, facilitating or inhibiting aspects in the performance of his duties. To analyze the conceptions andrepresentations of the department coordinators and teachers about the role of the Middle School Administrator in study, we used a model of research that mostly falls in a quantitative paradigm, adopt- ing as an instrument of data collection the questionnaire survey. In this context, we built two questionnaires, one for coordinators and another one for teachers that contemplated also an open question, analyzed qualitatively, by implementing the respective categorization of the replies obtained. We accomplished this study in the school year of 2010/2011, to the teachers of the second and third cycle of Basic and Secondary Education schools in three counties of the district of Viseu. The results, in general, suggest that the respondents are aware of the department coordinator functions, in today’s school, in the areas of organizational development, leadership, coordination and supervision, although their perceptions diverge in some variables. We conclude that management practices in middle school administration are in a solid, grounded, demanding route, but asking for a continuous specialized training in the area of Educational Guidance.

De acordo com alguns dados da investigação a consciência fonológica revela-se de grande importância na aprendizagem do código escrito. Neste sentido a presente dissertação de mestrado tem como objetivo fulcral dar resposta à seguinte questão de investigação: No final do Pré-Escolar as crianças atingem as metas preconizadas relativamente à consciência fonológica? Optou-se por um estudo exploratório, que contou com 25 crianças de ambos os géneros em idade Pré-Escolar. Utilizou-se, como instrumento de recolha de dados, um Mini Teste de Identificação de Competências Linguísticas, o qual foi elaborado com base num teste de Viana (2000) e nas Metas de Aprendizagem do Pré-escolar, preconizadas pelo ME. O teste é constituído por sete níveis: A - Consciência de rima; B – Consciência da segmentação de palavras; C - Consciência da reconstrução de palavras; D - Consciência da reconstrução de sílabas através de sons da fala; E - Consciência/discriminação da presença da mesma sílaba no início ou no fim da palavra; F – Supressão ou adição de palavras na frase G - Consciência frásica. O mesmo foi sujeito a um pré-teste. Concluiu-se que as crianças, na sua globalidade, revelaram ter atingido as metas preconizadas relativamente à consciência fonológica no final do Pré- Escolar. According to some findings of research, the phonological awareness is of great importance in the learning of the written code. Thus, the current master’s dissertation aims to address the following key research question: at the end of preschool do children reach the goals defined in relation to phonological awareness? A survey has been carried out, in which 25 preschool-age male and female children took part. As a data collection tool, a Mini test was used, based on one of Viana’s tests (2000) and on the preschool learning goals set by the Ministry of Education and Science. The test is consists of seven levels: A - rhyme awareness ; B - word segmentation awareness; C - word reconstruction awareness; D - reconstruction of syllables awareness through speech sounds; E - awareness / discrimination of the presence of the same syllable at the beginning or end of the word; F- subtracting or adding words to the sentence G - sentence awareness. The aforementioned test was subject to a pre-test. It was concluded that children, as a whole, proved to have reached the goals set in relation to the phonological awareness at the end of preschool.

Descreve-se uma implementação em software de Criptografia de Curvas Elípticas (CCE) e Criptografia Baseada em Emparelhamentos (CBE) para o microcontrolador MSP430, utilizado em sensores como Tmote Sky, TelosB e TinyNode. Para a CCE, foi implementado o protocolo ECDSA de assinatura digital e para a CBE, o protocolo NIKDP de acordo de chaves não-interativo, nos níveis de segurança de 80 e 128 bits, usando corpos primos e binários. Obteve-se um cálculo de emparelhamento de 21% a 28% mais rápido através de uma nova otimização para a redução modular em corpos primos e uma implementação eficiente de corpos binários.
