Meyer, Gregory Scott. "Living between the call and the burden : teacher stories of burnout". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29162.

Streszczenie:
Teachers live in a space between the calling and the burden – between the impulse to teach and the everyday stressors of teaching. According to research related to workplace stress, burnout is the result of long-term stress which has not been addressed over time. Teacher burnout is a major problem and is on the rise in British Columbia. In this thesis, I identify and describe the phenomenon of teacher burnout through teachers’ stories, and document ways teachers avoid and cope with stress and burnout. I interviewed six teachers in a focus group. Since they knew each other as fellow students in a Master’s program, a feeling of trust, empathy, confidentiality, and safety had already been established. As a result, the teachers disclosed their emotional and raw stories around stress and burnout. As a methodology, I use narrative inquiry to create meaning out of the teachers’ lived experiences around burnout and coping with stress. I use autoethnography to engage my own personal voice and stories as a teacher, enabling me to examine the cultural aspects of burnout by considering the social contexts in which it occurs. From my analysis of the literature on teacher burnout and the teachers’ stories (including my own), four themes emerge: stability, relationships, control, and culture/acculturation. As a framework, I locate the four themes between the call and the burden.

Mobley, Deborah. "The Lived Experience of Faith Community Nurses Living the Call to Health Ministry". VCU Scholars Compass, 2010. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/101.

Streszczenie:
Faith community nursing is one of the newest specialized practices of professional nursing. A faith community nurse is an actively registered professional nurse, who serves as a paid or volunteer staff member in a faith community. The faith community nurse promotes health and wholism of the faith community, its groups, families, and individual members. A faith community, as in a church, synagogue or mosque, is an organization of individuals and families who share common beliefs, values, religious doctrine, and faith practices that influence their lives. The faith community functions as a client system for the faith community nurse. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the experiences of Protestant faith community nurses "living the call" to health ministry. Previous researchers have explored the roles of the faith community nurse, but have not specifically investigated the experience of living the call. A hermeneutical phenomenological methodology was used to answer the question, "What is the lived experience of faith community nurses living the call to health ministry?" The participants were ten Caucasian female faith community nurses residing in four regions in the Commonwealth of Virginia. All participants acknowledged receiving a "call" to health ministry. A structured interview of 60 to 90 minutes was conducted with each participant. The interview consisted of structured and semi-structured questions and explored the meaning of living the call to health ministry. Data were analyzed using the phenomenological method of Max van Manen. Five themes emerged including: 1) the calling; 2) relating to God in living the call; 3) practice in living the call; 4) challenges in living the call; and 5) blessings in living the call. Participants described the experiences of the callings to health ministry, consistent communications with God and the challenges and blessings of faith community nursing. The practices of faith community nurses were also described by the participants. The findings provide a glimpse into the lifeworld of the faith community nurse living the call to health ministry. This study may be helpful to others wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of the calling to health ministry as well as the experiences of relating to God, practice, challenges, and blessings.

Hadleigh, Liana. "Living with a parent with mental health needs what children say". Thesis, University of East London, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.536624.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The parenting role of people with mental health needs has historically been neglected by both the research literature and mental health services. With developments in societal attitudes and mental health policies, recognition of people with mental health needs as parents and interest in this area has increased. The literature that followed has focused on the negative outcomes for children with a parent with mental health needs. More recent developments have given consideration to the children who do not experience negative outcomes and factors that facilitate this. Few studies have asked children about their experiences and those that have mainly focus on adolescents and those identified as young carers. Children are not a homogenous group and a mainly adolescent perspective in the literature cannot be assumed to represent younger children's experiences. This study aimed to understand how younger children talk about their experience of living with a parent with mental health needs and if they identified any positive aspects to this. It was hoped this would contribute to the expanding literature that has explored strengths within these families. Seven children aged between seven and eleven years old were interviewed. The data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The following four themes were identified from the children's experiences; making sense of mental health needs, the direct impact of mental health needs, making use of relationships and adaptation to parental mental health needs. Children developed their own explanations of parental mental health needs and used narratives based on "normal" understandings to manage the impact of these on them. Family relationships were both strained and a source of support for children and children played an important role in helping their family adapt to parental mental health needs. Implications for services and further research are discussed.

Waibel, Alison Kathleen. "Living What the Heart Knows: Learners' Perspectives on Compassion Cultivation Training". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/579084.

Streszczenie:
Defined as an awareness of suffering coupled with a willingness to do something to relieve suffering, compassion has recently received an incredible amount of attention in popular culture, social media, and academic and scientific research (Jinpa, 2015). Qualitative research is needed to investigate the experiences of adults learning to cultivate compassion. The present study adds to the body of research on compassion by investigating compassion cultivation with first person accounts, and by providing examples of somatic learning, or learning through the body. In this qualitative study, I investigate individuals' perceptions of the course Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT), developed at Stanford University's Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE). I explore three questions: 1) How do participants find CCT and why do they take the course? 2) How do participants describe the CCT course and their learning experiences? 3) How do participants describe the impact of CCT and integrate what they learned into their daily lives? I conducted 1-hour open-ended interviews with 18 CCT alumni and a qualitative analysis of interview transcripts to identify themes across the data. I identified four cases that exemplify elements of cultivating compassion, including: a case of depression relief, a case of increasing the capacity to stay, a case of dealing with self-criticism and a case of reducing empathy fatigue. I then organized findings across the entire data set into three categories according to my research questions; in each finding, I identified four themes and clustered participants' responses according to themes. Findings indicate that the 18 participants' reasons for taking CCT are diverse, including the desire to connect with others, curiosity about compassion and contemplative science, and the need for compassion in their personal and professional lives. All respondents reported CCT as a powerful and meaningful learning experience, describing the value of learning through the body, through meditation practices, and as a group. Participants attributed substantial positive changes to the course, citing improvements in their relationships to themselves and others, and increased awareness of their own mental and emotional states.

This paper examines the function of physical texts and the power of language itself in Herman Melville's 1857 novel The Confidence-Man. Throughout the novel, physical texts cause drastic changes in behavior and comportment in the characters who encounter them. Physical texts also function as a seemingly immutable signifier of authenticity and identity, but Melville later renders physical texts mutable and impossible to authenticate. The uncertain relationship between Melville's narrator and the novel itself calls into question the problem of documentation in the world outside of the novel.

Ashall, Vanessa. "Veterinary donation : to what extent can the ethical justifications for living human donation be applied to living animal donation?" Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/43512/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis develops the scant existing literature which explores the ethical justifications for living animal donation in the veterinary setting and contributes to the considerable research on social and ethical aspects of human living donation. The work argues that whilst some justifications for human living donation are not-transferable, others may be adapted and applied to the veterinary setting. The unique social context of veterinary donation is analysed, using novel empirical analysis to refine and contextualize the ethical arguments made. The research methods entail an innovative comparative ethical analysis and a qualitative empirical study which are integrated using an empirical bioethics approach. The main justificatory arguments for human living donation are identified as informed consent and donor best interest. These arguments stem from a human’s acknowledged rights to bodily integrity and the human medical professional’s duty not to harm their patients. The reduced capacity of animal donors means that donor consent arguments are not directly transferable to the veterinary setting and an animal owner’s informed consent is shown to have reduced moral authority. Whilst animal donors may lack comparable bodily rights, veterinary living donation practices can conflict with a veterinary surgeon’s professional obligations. A comparable justification for living animal donation is argued to exist only when the procedure is in the donor animal’s best interest. An empirical analysis of canine blood donation to a UK animal blood bank develops understanding of the social context of living animal donation. The analysis indicates that animal owners may not always be motivated by the best interest of donor animals; furthermore, consistent themes such as trust, optimism and human-animal comparisons have implications for the quality of a donor owner’s consent. These ethical and empirical findings are used to construct an ethical framework for living animal donation with detailed provisions for owner consent, donor best interest, donor harm and benefit, recipient benefit, fairness and transparency. The ethical framework is used to argue for the development of regulatory approaches to companion animal blood banking and feline renal transplantation in the UK. The work also has wider implications for veterinary ethics, veterinary policy and the social and ethical understanding of human living donation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A high savings culture is important for sustainable economic development of any country. Whilst Botswana has one of the highest gross national savings in sub-Saharan Africa, the same cannot be said regarding household savings. Household savings in Botswana have grown at a very slow pace between 2003 and 2012, a worrisome trend given the importance of savings. The main objective of the research assignment was to determine the factors that influence households saving behaviour in Botswana. A probit econometric model was used to find out what factors influence households to choose to save and which ones influence them not to save. Saving behaviour was measured by whether an individual has saved money with a financial institution within the past 12 months. The individual characteristics that were modelled for influence on households saving behaviour were age, income level, education level, gender, formal credit, informal credit, insurance and property ownership. The results indicated that, as suggested by theory and empirical evidence, age, income level and education level have a positive and significant influence on households saving behaviour, whereas, also in line with theory, formal and informal credit and insurance have a negative and significant influence on households saving behaviour. Being female also has a negative but insignificant influence on households saving behaviour. Contrary to expectations, property ownership, which was used as proxy for non-financial assets, has a positive influence on household saving behaviour, although the influence is not significant.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis is about the decisions a man named David Kaso made during the time I lived with him and his family. It describes how David tried to make sense of what he should do in different situations, and the doubts and uncertainties that he experienced as he did so. Through looking at David’s life in detail the thesis suggests some of the limits of ethnographic methodologies to explain people’s actions. My interest in uncertainty developed during the course of a fifteenmonth stay with David’s family in Chimtengo village, in the rural Central Region of Malawi. There was an overarching imperative on people in Chimtengo to give each other help, yet how exactly he should mediate this support was not something that always appeared easy for David to work out. There were structures that gave some order to his relationships and to what he did. Through getting to know David over a long period I became aware of the significance to him of being a ‘strong’ Christian, a good husband, and a big man. Following the course of his life in detail though, the limits of these different ideas as heuristic devices, or social rules of thumb, became apparent. These limits left David doubtful of his decisions, and me to live with uncertainties about my analysis of his actions. Focusing on David’s life suggested the heuristic nature of ethnographic knowledge, some of the ways that it is constrained by the time and the relationships out of which it is produced.

Fenoglio, Peter James. "Beyond Stigma: What is it to be HIV-Positive". Thesis, Griffith University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367225.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This project explores and presents the dimensions of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related stigma, which I argue is one of the main impediments to initiating, and succeeding in, HIV prevention. Beyond Stigma investigates the impact of HIV-related stigma on social, family and community groups and individuals, and the possible resulting changes in cultural behaviour. It argues that exploring the impact of HIV-related stigma on people living with HIV (PLHIV) through visual-art research functions as a cultural action that clarifies associated issues of stigmatisation. Instigating conversations about these issues through conceptually mediated social-commentary artwork forms the core of the research. The research comprises an exploratory and experiential study using a convenience sample, and an extensive self-incidental gathering of data, both of which are founded in heuristic methodology. The convenience sample used consists of adults who acquired HIV, or have been influenced by HIV-related stigma, including myself. The research in this study combines both empirical and theoretical approaches of heuristic research and seeks to capture and disseminate felt, or tacit, knowledge. This expressed and felt knowledge enables me to unify the field activities, the individual experience, and the art practice activities into visual-art research. The artworks establish meaning through image and association, acknowledging the challenges faced by PLHIV. Stigma and discrimination still play a significant role in the lives of PLHIV, affecting their confidence, self-esteem, and quality of life. As a result, significant manifestations of these effects are evident in the literature and in the contributors’ stories, and are demonstrated as harmful to the psychological wellbeing of PLHIV. Manifestations such as isolation, protection, contamination, disclosure, avoidance, ostracism, exclusion, rejection, blaming, assumptions, difference and indifference are the foundations for my mediated creative outcomes. These outcomes provide a dynamic cultural medium for investigating ongoing conversations of empathy and understanding.

Null, Dawn Christina. "A STUDY OF LIVING AND WORKING ON THE TOWBOAT: WHAT ARE THE HEALTH & NUTRITION IMPLICATIONS?" OpenSIUC, 2012. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/488.

Streszczenie:
There is little published literature on the health and nutrition status of inland river towboat crewmen. The purpose of the study was to better understand how life on the towboat affects health status, the crews' perceived benefits and barriers to good health, specifically eating practices and physical activity, and motivation to meet U.S.C.G. physical and BMI guidelines. The study utilized a cross-sectional design to explore relationships among variables utilizing a survey and body composition measurements. One hundred ninety-four crewmen participated. Findings indicate crewmen are at increased risk of chronic disease related to anthropometric measurements, lack of aerobic activity, and unhealthy eating practices. Surprisingly, though, men indicated they like healthy foods and would eat them if served. Therefore, men are not as opposed to menu changes as originally thought. Additionally, the towboat environment must be more supportive of healthy behaviors to promote change. Furthermore, given the towboat culture and tradition, a successful intervention must be based on an ecological approach, addressing individual-level, socio-cultural and environmental-level influences.

Streszczenie:
In sparsely populated municipalities, there is a large increase of elderly people in relation to people of working age. This will entail a great need for housing for the elderly, and at the same time resources for the care of the elderly. The aim for this study is to examine how older people within Storuman-, Sorsele and Vilhelmina municipality perceive their current housing and other forms of housing for the future, and also to analyze how the housing demand is met now or in the plans for future development within the municipalities. Interviews have been conducted with both elderly but also with people who work with housing issues within the municipalities. There are incentives that the demand of shared housing will increase. The elderly feel a lack of meeting places and they prefer shared forms of housing over regular apartments. The municipalities have different challenges and different housing supply and therefore they have different approaches and plans to cope with the future housing demand for elderly.

Streszczenie:
The recent changes in legislation and codes of practice expand the role of the educational psychologist to a wider age range: 0-25. Moreover, surveys suggest an increasing number of children and young people experience difficulties with mental health, including depression. A systematic literature review of what narratives young people use to communicate depression was undertaken in the first paper. Despite an abundance of literature about depression in clinical settings, only eight studies met the inclusion criteria and were incorporated in the synthesis. A number of issues were identified including ways and methods of communicating depression and the impact of normative pressures and gendered experiences. Findings have implications for practitioners working with young people and have been used to develop a tentative framework for effective practice. The second paper reports on qualitative research, adapting a phenomenological approach. The self-selected participant sample (three university students, aged 19-21) had experiences of living with depression. Each participant was interviewed three times, using focused semi-structured interviews. The data were subsequently transcribed and analysed using a framework of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, Flowers & Larkin, 2009). The themes were grouped into superordinate themes and interpreted in the light of researcher's own experiences and knowledge. Two reported themes 'the weariness of the world was upon me' and 'it all fell down to chance' discuss embodied experiences of living with depression and barriers and facilitators to accessing help, which was mostly coincidental. Finally, the third paper discusses evidence-based practice, ways of achieving impact in research, and dissemination of research at individual, organisational and academic level. Overall, the present research suggests that educational psychologists can play an important role in raising awareness of children and young people living with depression, as well as promoting mental health, wellbeing and resilience in a variety of educational settings and amongst practitioners working with children and young people.

Quinn, Hayley Danielle. "A Place to Call My Own: Understanding the Experience of Home for Young People with Disabilities Living in Long-Term Residential Care". Thesis, Griffith University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367867.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This exploratory study was based on a new model of residential care that was designed specifically to provide a home-like environment to young people with severe disabilities and complex chronic healthcare needs (i.e., Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)) to allow them a more appropriate and dignified lifestyle. In 2006, there was an estimated 6,500 people with disabilities under 65 years of age living in residential aged care in Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics; ABS, 2008). These living environments have been found to be inappropriate and inadequate for young people with disabilities (Cameron et al., 2001; Winkler et al., 2006), particularly given that they may not require 24-hour nursing care. It is important to consider the nature of home in more detail when thinking about living environments for marginalised groups of people (e.g. people with disabilities), especially as it has been found that the nature of home can impact on the quality of life (Annison, 2000). In order to understand the meaning of “home” for a group of people who live within a particular environment, it is essential that we seek to understand the perceptions of those individuals. In order to provide optimal services, the subjective experience needs to be heard and understood. The current research was conducted in accordance with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This method allowed the research to retain the voice of the service users at the forefront and ensured that their views remained paramount. Multiple domains of home, as they were experienced over time, were examined through a series of semi-structured personal interviews conducted with seven residents with either MS or ABI at their residential care setting. The study aimed to understand the residents’ ‘lived experience’ within the residential apartments, and specifically to answer the following questions: 1) How do residents experience home within a residential care setting? and; 2) What influences their sense of home? Two core themes emerged from the data, namely Perceived Qualities of Place and Identity. These themes seemed to be inextricably interlinked with each other, and to the extent that they overlapped, a sense of Home was created. These two core themes were influenced by a core process that took place for this group of residents, namely, Deconstruction and Reconstruction of their sense of home. The core process was influenced by the theme of Connections. Connections was constructed from three sub-themes: Interactions with the physical environment, Relationships with family and friends, and Relationships with staff. These themes influenced the way in which deconstruction and reconstruction occurred as well as the nature of identity and the perception of place. The current study produced four major findings. First, connections appeared to be paramount to the development of a sense of home having an influence in multiple ways. Although previous research has linked the importance of social relationships to general well-being and quality of life, the current study has found that these perceptions of relationships also impacted on the participants’ sense of home. Positive relationships, particularly with staff, created a sense of belonging and comfort that assisted in the reconstruction of their sense of home. Interactions between participants and family were especially critical to the participants’ sense of home. Second, the sense of home emerged as an important concept that is comparative, temporal, tenuous and vulnerable to deconstruction, and needs to be considered by service providers. Deconstruction appeared to take place more rapidly than reconstruction, highlighting the importance of prevention. Home was a vulnerable construct that could be easily destroyed through negative interactions with the physical environment and/or interactions with others. Third, the construct of home was intimately linked to the sense of identity. It is important for service providers to appreciate these linkages and respond accordingly. This type of information is rarely used in relation to the design and provision of services in environments that provide long-term care for young people with chronic and complex health needs. Finally, this study has built a theory that shows the link between the existing models of home proposed by Despres (1991). Although these models have been proposed as four distinct conceptual approaches to home, this study has highlighted that they do not operate in isolation. Instead, home is a multi-dimensional construct that is influenced by many factors. It can be influenced by connections, perceived qualities of place and identity. However, identity needs to be congruent with a sense of belonging. Identity needs to be a construct that becomes more focal in service delivery.

Streszczenie:
Background: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a term that has become increasingly prominent in the corporate world. As the awareness of responsibly produced products is growing among both companies and consumers, it has become increasingly important for companies to get involved in sustainability issues. There may be several reasons why companies choose to integrate CSR in their business, where one reason may be related to company size. In the business category of micro, there is currently no widespread research, which makes this company size interesting to study. The choice of industry was made because coffee is one of the world's most important merchandise, and the coffee industry has come a long way with integrating CSR in comparision to many other industries. Purpose and research question: The purpose of this study is to create a deeper understanding of why coffee roasters in the business category of micro enterprises choose to incorporate CSR in their businesses. In connection with our purpose we have chosen the following research question: What are the main driving forces to why micro roasters choose to engage in CSR activities? Method: This study is based on a qualitative method with an abductive approach. We have conducted six semi-structured interviews to gather our empirical material. Conclusion: The main driving forces identified for micro roasters to engage in CSR activities include: Personal commitment, for-profit business, a meaningful work and convey messages. Keywords: Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, sustainability, driving forces.
Nyckelord: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), socialt ansvarstagande, hållbarhetsarbete, drivkrafter.

Streszczenie:
Very few empirical studies in migration and citizenship focus on immigrants' perceptions of the concept of citizenship and its prominent features. Based on the semi-structured interviews of 8 Pakistani immigrants (Swedish citizenship holders and non-citizenship holders) in Sweden, this study aimed to understand how these immigrants perceive and define Swedish citizenship, and how do they value it in material, symbolic, and emotional terms. Through conceptual framework and literature review of citizenship in its symbolic, materialistic, and emotional term, three central approaches mobility, sense of security, and sense of belonging were derived and analyzed. The findings of this research suggest that immigrants who participated in this study tend to value Swedish citizenship. They are very concerned about their security and protection which is provided by the state to a citizen in every sphere of life; economically, socially, politically; protection against the deportation; and while traveling anywhere in the world. These immigrants perceived that passport makes a difference, and during travel, it enables and constrains inequalities, restrictions, and uncertainties in the mobility arena. Furthermore, when it comes to belongings: the interviewee relate it to work, spending time in the country, and participation in the society. Finally, this study recommends further research with different migrants groups in Sweden to understand the true essence of Swedish citizenship in immigrants' worldview.

The government in Maharashtra are trying to rehabilitate the informal settlements in Mumbai through the slum rehabilitation authority and its rehabilitation scheme and we wanted to learn more about how it worked and how it affects living conditions for former residents of an informal settlement and how it can differ from those still living there. This study has a focus on a specific informal settlement in Mumbai, called Gilbert Hill. Through observations and interviews with people living in the area, the research investigates resident’s opinions and experiences. Interviews with officials, involved in the planning of Mumbai were conducted, in order to learn how the interaction between formal and informal structures looks like. The results will be presented in this report and will give an insight of the life in an informal settlement in Mumbai as well as the thoughts and efforts with the rehabilitation of said settings. Our findings have been analysed and discussed in the light of David Harvey’s The right to city, displacement theories, theories about the public private partnership and what it is that makes informal settlements to persist. We have discovered that it is not as easy as to just redevelop an informal settlement according to a uniform plan. Residents have special bonds to the neighbourhood, both between each other and to the place itself. Even though the residents might be viewed as impoverished and underprivileged they still should have a right to form their future as well as their surroundings. They certainly have a will to do so.

Researchers have provided evidence that living in intimate partner violence while pregnant negatively impacts the health of both the women and their unborn children. The purpose of this narrative study was twofold, first to gain understanding of the meaning of health as described by pregnant women who lived in intimate partner violence, and second to gain strategies for health care professionals. Six purposefully selected women participated in two interviews. The data were arranged under five themes: loss of body health, loss of mind health, loss of spirit health, coping with loss of body, mind and spirit health, and advice for health care professionals. The results revealed that these women’s health was negatively affected by living in intimate partner violence while pregnant. Universal screening, coalition building, further research, changes in health care policies, and changes in nursing education and practice are needed to properly address this serious health issue.

Streszczenie:
The need for workers during Ireland’s so-called ‘Celtic Tiger’ era attracted migrants from many countries. In 2004 Ireland opened its borders to the New Member States (NMS) favouring migrant workers from the accession countries. This resulted in migrants from the NMS entering the country seeking employment, the largest group being from Poland. When the Irish economy started to decline in the late 2000s both nationals and migrants started to leave the country. However, many Polish migrants have continued to remain in the country. This thesis explores the reasons why Polish migrants came to Ireland and why they continue to remain in the country despite its economic decline post 2010 when austerity became a reality. This thesis argues that most of those Polish migrants who took part in this study are well educated. Most claim that they have not been discriminated against in terms of their social needs, conditions of employment, salary, or promotion in their place of work. Although they originally migrated to Ireland for economic reasons the recent measurers of austerity introduced since 2010 has not had any major impact on their standard of living. This thesis argues that despite high unemployment and measurers of austerity introduced by the Irish government since 2010, most Polish migrants wish to remain in Ireland because of their quality of life, better job opportunities and personal commitments. It concludes that leaving Ireland is not that simple, their domestic circumstances have now changed, and some have got married, have families and enjoy a better quality of life in Ireland than in Poland. Their decision whether to remain or leave Ireland no longer rests solely with them. They now have to consider their domestic situation, their family’s opinions, and their future. Most are of the opinion that even if they became unemployed while in Ireland they could survive financially and returning to Poland is an option that they do not wish to contemplate.

Streszczenie:
Reducing inefficiencies without compromising quality is a major challenge facing college and university leaders. Measuring efficiency and quality is often addressed through various statistical analyses (Archibald & Feldman, 2008; Flegg, Allen, & Thurlow, 2004). Researchers have also applied cost benefit analysis to measure efficiency. Collaboration is one mechanism used by university personnel to enhance efficiency and quality (Wiley, 2008). The literature on collaboration includes collaboration in research (Rigby & Elder, 2005), teaching (Kezar, 2005; Letterman & Dugan, 2004), and cross-divisional collaboration, learning communities (O’Connor & Associates, 2003). Residential colleges (where faculty live and work in residence halls) are another form of collaboration emerging across college campuses. A thorough review of the literature reveals no studies exploring the costs and benefits of residential colleges. The purpose of this study was to understand and describe the costs and benefits of residential colleges. The theoretical framework for this study was based on Nas’ (1996) cost benefit analysis framework. Data were collected through 60-90 minute telephone interviews with live-in faculty leaders of residential colleges and chief housing officers on campuses that offer residential colleges. Participants came from 11 different campus and included 12 chief housing officers and 11 faculty members. There are substantial institutional and individual costs associated with starting and maintaining a residential college. Institutional costs include departmental financial implications for facility renovations, staffing, and faculty incentives. Faculty principals and students bear individual costs. Impact on research, intensive time requirements for the position, and lack of recognition are costs affecting faculty. Residential college (RC) students incur additional fees and non-RC students are impacted by a diminished residential experience (as compared to their RC peers). Conversely, there are significant benefits resulting from residential colleges that may mitigate these costs. Institutions benefit from improved faculty pedagogy, expanded learning opportunities for students, and increased faculty connection to the institution. Individual benefits include positive faculty and student relationships (for faculty and students), increased understanding of students (for faculty), and faculty housing and other related incentives.

Streszczenie:
In the UK, more than two million people are alive following a cancer diagnosis and people with cancer live an average six times longer than they did forty years ago. There have been dramatic survival improvements in some cancers with six now having median survival expectations of over ten years. This is remarkable but cancer consists of more than two hundred ‘types’ and, for some types, predicted survival is still only weeks. Furthermore, some issues related to long term survival are only just emerging, many remain underresearched and studies that exist have been criticised for being drawn from limited cancer sites and ignoring the coping strategies and social contexts of those diagnosed with cancer. The aim of this work is to explore the experience of living with and beyond the diagnosis of a ‘poor prognostic’ cancer in contemporary society and from a sociological perspective. The work is informed by a literature review which explores lay understanding of cancer, a theoretically driven investigation designed to produce a sociological understanding of what it is like to live with cancer, a feasibility study and a full empirical study, which were both supported by users. Data for the principal study was generated by ‘photovoice’; a novel participatory method in which participants created and discussed photographs to illustrate and describe their experience in depth. This study revealed that living with and beyond cancer was an ongoing disruptive experience for participants and their constant fear of recurrence impacted on future plans. Furthermore, society’s stigmatising perception of cancer bestowed certain responsibilities and obligations on the participants. Photographs added a power and richness to the data. This work adds to the very limited understanding of the experience of cancer and ‘survivorship’ for this group and will hopefully guide appropriate communication, service provision and future research.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis uses local narratives to explore relationships between agrarian landscapes, agrarian land use practices and the traditional cultural perspectives of traditional amaMpondo farming communities living along Pondoland‟s Wild Coast, on the East Coast of South Africa. This endeavour is based on theories that propose that human behaviour, including agrarian practice, is influenced by complex socio-cultural factors that shape cultural values, knowledge and world-views, and that are reflected in cultural narratives, and these influence the way different cultures relate to the surrounding environment. As a consequence of these cultural influences, different cultures use and shape the landscape in unique, culturally determined ways. Consequently, in human impacted landscapes attention needs to be paid to how cultural world-views, practices, customs and value systems influence the land use practices of the people inhabiting those landscapes. Amongst traditional communities with a long history of habitation within particular landscapes, traditional land use practices and customs, including agrarian practices, need to be understood from the perspective of the opportunities and constraints that particular environments present. Literature shows that a failure to understand relationships between culture and land use can led to the imposition of unsuitable development practices and policy on traditional cultures, and this can undermine cultural, agricultural and ecological diversity and lead to unsustainable models of development (Naveh, 1995; Antrop, 2005; Antrop, 2000; Capra, 2003; Capra, 1996; Nusser, 2001; Harding, S. 2006). Given the need to address development and agricultural practices that perpetuate unsustainable land use, an understanding of the nature of influencing relationships between landscape, land use and culture is particularly important Despite the debilitating influences of a colonial history, many rural communities along the Pondoland Wild Coast still retain a strong sense of cultural identity that has deep roots in a traditional agrarian system, and this has given rise to a unique indigenous landscape. This study of traditional amaMpondo farming communities presents an opportunity to gain insights into how different cultural perspectives might shape and utilize the landscape and lead to alternative land use systems than the dominant industrial norm.

The current research aimed to develop an understanding of the psychological experience of living with a chronic sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Northern Ireland (Nl). Qualitative methodology was applied to: elucidate an awareness of the cultural context in relation to attitudes towards sex and sexual health in Nl; gain an understanding of the challenges affecting persons living with HIV (PLWH) in Nl; and, provide information on the experience of participation in an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based intervention designed to promote psychological flexibility among PLWH in Nl. Attitudes towards sex and sexual health in Nl were found to be informed by sex education, sexual knowledge and in the portrayal of sexual behaviour, among focus groups held with students who were engaging in a university-based sexual health promotion project. Stigma and a detected silence surrounding discussion of sexual behaviour and STIs, was believed to result in future challenges for those diagnosed with chronic, sexually acquired infections in Nl. Focus groups held among PLWH in Nl evidenced the complexity and cohesion of psychological implications and called for the development of a targeted intervention to support and facilitate adjustment to an HIV positive status. An ACT rationale demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach among other health and psychological difficulties and highlighted limited prior application of the model among PLWH. The experience of an introduction to ACT among support groups promoted the development of an individualised ACT-based intervention which would afford time to share the personal experience of HIV and would offer an opportunity to establish values and committed actions. Eight HIV positive males participated in six weekly individual ACT sessions. Outcomes demonstrated the efficacy of ACT in supporting HIV positive men in Nl and future directions recommend further application of the model to evaluate its effectiveness in promoting psychological flexibility among PLWH.

This is a portfolio of academic, therapeutic practice and research work. The portfolio consists of three dossiers that demonstrate my personal and professional development during my three years of training. The academic dossier contains three selected essays : ' that were compiled through the course of my studies. The first essay explores the concept of resistance within psychodynamic theory and practice. This essay describes the expressions and functions of resistance, highlighting how client and therapist resistance shapes the therapeutic relationship. The second essay draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) theory and practice. This essay attempts to highlight the complexity, challenges and benefits of using CBT with older adults. In particular, this essay examines how CBT influences the therapeutic relationship when working with this specific client group. The third essay considers how a person-centred approach understands and conceptualises human distress, whilst critiquing the use of classification systems such as the . DSM-IV-TR and the ICD-lO. This essay also illustrates how a person-centred practitioner would engage therapeutically with a client presenting with obsessive compulsive personality disorder traits. The therapeutic practice dossier focuses on my clinical experience. It contains a description of my three clinical placements and includes my 'Final Clinical Paper'. This paper provides a personal account of my journey towards becoming a counselling psychologist, explaining how theory and practice have shaped the practitioner and individual that I am today. Finally, the research dossier is comprised of a literature review and two qualitative research reports. The literature review addresses the psychodynamic phenomenon of countertransference within the supervisory relationship and discusses how supervisee and supervisor styles of relating colour the supervisory relationship. The first research report is an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) that examines how psychodynamic supervisors experience countertransference in supervision. The second research report uses Thematic Analysis (TA) to explore how trainee practitioners experience the psychodynamic supervisory relationship.

"What happens to faith when Christians get dementia? : a criticial exploration of how dementia affects the faith experience and practice of Christians from the evangelical tradition living with mild to moderate symptoms of dementia". Streszczenie:
The thesis explores the experience of Christian faith for those who live with mild to moderate dementia. Whilst spirituality is increasingly recognised as a factor in wellbeing, there has been relatively little in-depth exploration of how dementia affects faith, or conversely, how faith affects the experience of dementia, particularly, within the context of the evangelical faith tradition. Located within the field of Practical Theology, Osmer's four tasks provide structure for the research and discussion. The qualitative study uses a hermeneutic phenomenological methodology to discover insight from the lived experience of eight Christians who live with mild to moderate dementia. Theological reflection on issues arising from the phenomenological accounts, seeks understanding of the profound questions which dementia brings to faith experience. In conversation with theological writing, Christian tradition, and in the light of Scripture, the discussion looks for mutually critical correlation between experience and theology, investigating what it means to be a Christian living with dementia. The reflections are structured using a model of orientation, disorientation and reorientation, reminiscent of Brueggemann's scheme, looking for what this discloses about how faith is experienced in the life-changing challenges brought by dementia. Gadamer's notion of fusion of horizons discloses ongoing insight into the thesis question. The study concludes that faith is dependent primarily on relationship with God, expressed within the community of faith. Counterintuitively, it reveals a growing, positive experience of faith in the light of dementia, and highlights the significance of Christian hope. The thesis contends that faith experience and growth do not end with diagnosis, even though experience and practice begin to change in some respects. The research brings fresh theological insights, and highlights the need for new, creative practices which enable the faith nurture and support of disciples of Christ who are living with this disease. This period of early to moderate dementia provides opportunity for consideration of these issues, and for hearing the voices of those who live with dementia.

It is only in the last 25 years that Alzheimer's disease has garnered much interest in the world of research. Most of this has been of a quantitative nature, focusing on etiology, treatment, genetics, characteristics, and behavioural aspects of the disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the increasingly salient but comparatively under-researched issue of Alzheimer's disease from the perspective of the affected individual. An exploratory study was conducted in the Lower Mainland area of British Columbia with 8 participants who had been diagnosed as having Alzheimer's disease, currently in the early stages. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit participants via referrals, personal contact, and networking. Using the qualitative approach of Critical Incident Technique, participants were interviewed individually twice and their accounts were examined. Specifically, the goal of this study was to enrich the understanding of the experience of living with early stage Alzheimer's disease by developing a set of categories describing those factors that help and hinder individuals' ability to live with their illness. Implications for counselling affected individuals and their families and directions for future research were discussed. It was concluded that the resulting categories can be utilised in numerous ways for those living with Alzheimer's disease as well as those working with them, both formally and informally.

Objective: Review and analyze the state of the art regarding gestational surrogacy and uterinetransplantation. Methods: A search was made in PubMedâ, with the following inclusion criteria: articles published in English over the last 10 years. After analysing 98 abstracts, 27 articles were selected. Results: AUFI can be caused by several medical issues, such as Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, which is the congenital absence of uterus and upper two thirds of the vagina, being the most common cause of AUFI, and by oncological disorders in fertile aged women when fertility sparing options are not a possibility. Living or deceased donors can both be used in UTx, each having advantages and limitations. After organ transplantation, permanent immunosuppression becomes part of the postoperative and maintenance care of a patient, to avoid graft rejection. Discussion: A suggestion of a decisional algorithm is made aiming to help the decisional pathway of couples who suffer from AUFI and wish to have children, and have to choose between adoption, GS or UTx. Step by step, we discuss the several issues involved with these options. Conclusion: The availability of gestational surrogacy and uterine transplant has raised new options for patients with AUFI. It is now imperative to discuss these alternatives in these patients, besides adoption or childlessness.

The population structure of Taiwan is currently aging because of the development in modern medicine and the change of sickness categories. The number of chronic diseases of the elderly is on the rise and such diseases have become the focus of long-term care. In 1998, the government promoted the community care social welfare policy of the elderly. The policy provides an “on-line emergency call service” to people with disabilities and the elderly. There are literatures on long-distance medical care or domestic care service all around the world, but none for an online emergency call service for the elderly living alone. This study employed the content analysis method to illustrate the current situation of the on-line emergency call service for the elderly living alone in Taiwan. There were 167 sources gathered and classified into 11 categories. The data was organized, analyzed and compared to elaborate on the current situation and service model of it. The results showed that: (1) The service volume and service being used in different regions were not directly related to the number of the elderly living alone in the corresponding regions; rather, according to data analysis, it is suggested to be related to the volume of service required, the limitations of service users and the allocated budgets to the service from the local governments. (2) There were four different types of service models in different regions. The analysis showed that though there were many professional tasks in the service, there was neither an explicit job description of the service providers nor was there an existing standardized service procedure. As a result, different regions developed the service in their own ways. According to the results, the researcher had the following suggestions: (1) To promote the intensity of the service and defend the rights of the elderly. To examine, evaluate and adjust the quota and budget of the service to address the needs of service. (2) To re-examine the correlated regulations and service content, lower the application requirement for service users, make the application coverage flexible to cover more potential and marginal users from different places and situations. (3) To establish a standardized service model and encourage multiple developments to provide customized services. To empower and explicitly regulate the service content, service model and service procedure to ensure the quality of the service. They would also encourage the related personnel to conduct the follow-up researches. (4) To conduct the further research and integrate the findings in education to cultivate more professional service providers, which would further benefit the service and most especially the service users.

Streszczenie:
Information studies writers from various theoretical perspectives, including feminism and critical race theory, have argued that information classification systems are politically charged artifacts that privilege some types of information while marginalizing others. Although several writers have documented the limitations of classification systems in representing marginalized topics, few have studied how searchers understand, address, and circumvent these limitations. To investigate this question, I conducted a qualitative study of the information seeking behavior of nine disability studies scholars. In semi-structured interviews, I asked faculty members and graduate students about their experiences conducting disability studies research. In this thesis, I discuss three main themes from the interviews: research challenges, search tactics and strategies, and interaction with subject headings. I also discuss the Library of Congress Subject Headings for one book, Eli Clare's Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness and Liberation, as a case study. I situate scholars' experiences in relation to disability studies as a field that is interdisciplinary, relatively new, and concerned with a group that has been socially and economically marginalized. I offer suggestions about how librarians and knowledge organizers can address the needs of researchers in disability studies and other critical interdisciplinary fields.

My work centers on “Show-Ming.” I believe that the name “Show-Ming” is not unfamiliar to most of us, for it can appropriate any role, job, or even gender in any story. So I image “Show-Ming,” who always plays the leading role in jokes. I picture that “Show-Ming” has a face left with only a smile and a blank look, and because he is an appropriated leading role, he has only a figure. My work centers on the image in the light of places, space, and issues. I try to view the outside reality in a way of “mo lei tau” with a combined emotion of humor, games, disdain and kuso as a reaction to the outside environment. This article is analyzing my creations between “Show-Ming I-IV” in 2005 and “The Non-Serial of Show-Ming” in 2007 . Especially for three works “The series of photo myself”,” The series of Show-Ming on the way ”, and “The Non-Serial of Show-Ming”. Try to treat the developing of the form and thinking of works. And try to compare with the creations at the same generation. That helps me to orientate my creations, and treat the speciality of comic images in Contemporary Art.
