Streszczenie:
The size effects observed in the torsion of thin FCC single crystal wires is modelled by the employment of mechanism-based strain gradient crystal plasticity (MSG-CP). In the formulation the total slip resistance in each active slip system is assumed to be due to a mixed population of forest obstacles arising from both statistically stored and geometrically necessary dislocations. The MSG-CP constitutive model is implemented into the Abaqus/Standard FE platform by developing the User MATerial subroutine UMAT. By implementing the formulation, the relationship between the non-dimensional torque and the surface strain of the thin copper single crystal wires of different diameters is obtained with the [001] direction along that of the wire axis. The simulation results of torsion reveal size effects, which is in a qualitative agreement with those reported in existing literatures. An appreciable axial elongation is also found in the torsion of single crystal wires.Key words Size effect, MSG-CP model, Torsion

Streszczenie:
In this study, a numerical prediction of temperature profiles in a thin wire exposed to convective, radiative and temperature-dependent thermal conductivity is carried out using a finite-difference linearization approach. The procedure involves a numerical solution of a one-dimensional nonlinear unsteady heat transfer equation with specified boundary and initial conditions. The resulting system of nonlinear equations is solved with the Newton-Raphson’s technique. However unlike the traditional approach involving an initial discretization in space then in time, a different numerical paradigm involving an Euler scheme temporal discretization is applied followed by a spatial discretization. Appropriate numerical technique involving partial derivatives are devised to handle a squared gradient nonlinear term which plays a key role in the formulation of the Jacobian matrix. Tests on the numerical results obtained herein confirm the validity of the formulation.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The thick film paste manufacturers are expected to produce conductors which are lead and cadmium free, yet have excellent fired film properties and the same performance and properties as the cadmium and lead containing formulations. The fired film surface of these conductors must be defect free (i.e. imperfections, pills, agglomerates) after multiple firing steps and must perform on dielectric as well as substrates from different suppliers. Typically, the thick film gold conductors are used in high reliability applications such as medical devices, military applications, and high frequency circuits, which require robust performance at high and low temperatures, in chemically aggressive environments, or extremely humid conditions. As circuits decrease in size and become more complex, the thick film gold properties become increasingly critical. The challenge is to develop an alternative gold conductor formulation, which can print and resolve fine features (down to 4 mil lines and spaces) as well as have the ability to be etched for higher density circuit designs (down to 1–2 mil lines and spaces). Gold conductors are typically used in conjunction with other high temperature thick films so good performance after multiple firings was also a targeted requirement. Heraeus has been proactive for the past decade in the development of thick film products that are both RoHS (lead and cadmium free) as well as REACH compliant. This paper discusses the experiments that were performed in order to understand the contribution of gold powder, organic and inorganic system to improve the fired film performance. These formulations were compared against existing gold conductors including the high performance gold conductor options as well as other available standard gold conductor options. Thin wire bonding trials including both gold and aluminum wire are used to compare influences of raw materials which includes high volume wire bonding reliability including failure modes and aged wire bond adhesion at elevated temperature exposures (300°C) for extended periods of time. In order to analyze fired film morphology and link this up to wire bond performance, SEM images of the conductor surface and cross sections were conducted. These studies resulted in a newly developed thick film gold conductor paste for use in a wide variety of applications. We present wire-bonding data with gold and aluminum wire and reliability results on both 96% Al2O3 ceramic substrates as well as on top of standard dielectrics.

Streszczenie:
A simplified two-dimensional model is presented to simulate periodically distributed micro-cracking in a thin coating fully bonded to an elastoplastic aluminum wire/rod. The alumina coating which is generated by anodic oxidation is treated as an elastic material, while the ductile aluminum wire substrate is characterized by a bi-linear elastoplastic hardening model. An elastoplastic shear lag model is applied to transfer the shearing stress from the substrate layer to the thin coating. When the coated structure is subjected to different applied load, the system will undergo different stress levels and exhibit different cracking stages. Accordingly, explicit solutions corresponding to different loading stages are presented based on a generalized axisymmetric formulation. Finite element simulation is employed to verify the present elastic solution when the applied load is relatively small and the whole system is in the elastic state. Experimental characterization is conducted to validate the present elastoplastic solution when the substrate or interlayer undergoes large deformation. A versatile high-fidelity optical microscope is utilized to check the micro structure of the coating and continuously monitor the fracture development in the coating layer, through which valuable detailed micro-cracking information, such as critical applied load corresponding to crack initiation, crack pattern and crack spacing, is obtained. It shows that the presented fracture model is able to accurately capture the stress and strain distribution in the coated structure and predict the fracture initiation, infilling, and saturation in the thin coating layer.

In this paper the influence of ground plane size on the performance characteristics of a thin-wire helical antenna characterized by a logarithmically varying turns spacing, and mounted above a circular ground plane of finite extent, is systematically investigated. The moment-method formulation utilized in the paper involves a wire-grid model for the ground plane as well as explicit expressions, deriving from a vector potential approach, for the radiation fields of this ‘loghelix’. Subsequent computational results obtained for a candidate 8-turn ‘loghelix’ axial-mode ˀantenna using various combinations of ‘logarithmic variation factor’ and ground plane size, very clearly reveal that limiting the size of the ground plane to finite dimensions significantly improves antenna performance. Maximum gain obtainable, for example, emerged as 16.45dBi when a finite ground plane is utilized, as against 13.55dBi for the corresponding antenna, backed by an infinite ground plane. The associated axial ratio performance is characterized by for the finite ground case, and , for the infinite ground plane case. A notable finding of the investigations is that the dip that typically features in the power gain profiles of antenna structures backed by finite ground planes will be eliminated, when ground plane size, relative to antenna size exceeds a certain minimum.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Five numbered compounds containing boric acid were evaluated for use as mound drenches for control of red imported fire ants in South Carolina. These studies were conducted in 2 pastures, 1 in Boykin and the second in Santee. In the first pasture 14 circular plots (100 ft diam) were delineated with the location of fire ant mounds in each plot mapped. A minimum of 5 mounds were present in each plot. The activity of each mound was also determined by slightly prodding the mound with a thin metal wire and then estimated by the number of ants coming to the surface using the following scale: 0 = inactive mound, 1 = 1-100 ants, 2 = 101-1000 ants and 3 = greater than 1000 ants. To each of the 14 plots, 1 of 7 treatments was assigned randomly. The concentration of each EI formulation was determined by adding 70 ml of compound to 1 gal of water as instructed by the company. One gal of solution was applied to each mound. Treatments in field 1 were applied on 18 Jun 84. In the second study conducted at Santee, the same procedure was followed except that EI formulations were doubled, 140 ml in 1 gal of water. Treatments in field 2 were applied on 13 Oct 84.

The paper reviews certain integral equation approaches and related numerical methods used in studies of biomedical applications of electromagnetic fields pertaining to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and nerve fiber stimulation. TMS is analyzed by solving the set of coupled surface integral equations (SIEs), while the numerical solution of governing equations is carried out via Method of Moments (MoM) scheme. A myelinated nerve fiber, stimulated by a current source, is represented by a straight thin wire antenna. The model is based on the corresponding homogeneous Pocklington integro-differential equation solved by means of the Galerkin Bubnov Indirect Boundary Element Method (GB-IBEM). Some illustrative numerical results for the TMS induced fields and intracellular current distribution along the myelinated nerve fiber (active and passive), respectively, are presented in the paper.

Streszczenie:
The present paper addresses aspects related to transverse tensile armour buckling in flexible pipes. An analytical model for evaluating the tensile armour buckling capacity is presented based on formulating the linearised differential equation describing the transverse stability of the thin curved wire assuming no friction. This is followed by a numerical study based on FE analysis to evaluate the extra capacity from friction during cyclic bending behaviour and where the yield stress is used as the failure criteria. The results is then compared to test data and a design criteria for transverse tensile armour buckling proposed.
