Nanoporous cobalt thin films were deposited on anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes at room temperature using pulsed laser deposition. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the nanoporous cobalt thin films retained the monodisperse pore size and high porosity of the anodized aluminum oxide substrates. Temperature- and field-dependent magnetic data obtained between 10 K and 350 K showed large hysteresis behavior in these materials. The increase of coercivity values was larger for nanoporous cobalt thin films than for multilayered cobalt/alumina thin films. The average diameter of the cobalt nanograins in the nanoporous cobalt thin films was estimated to be ∼5 nm for blocking temperatures near room temperature. These results suggest that pulsed laser deposition may be used to fabricate nanoporous magnetic materials with unusual properties for biosensing, drug delivery, data storage, and other technological applications.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to produce cobalt (Co)-based thin films by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique and then to evaluate structural and mechanical integrity. Design/methodology/approach – Co-based thin films were produced by metalorganic CVD technique. Boronizing, carburization and nitridation of the produced Co thin films were accomplished through a post-treatment stage of thermal diffusion into as-deposited Co thin films, in order to produce cobalt boride (Co2B), cobalt carbide and cobalt nitride thin films in the surface layer of Co. The surface topography and the crystal structure of the produced thin films were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The mechanical integrity of the produced thin films was evaluated through nanoindentation technique. Findings – The obtained results indicate that Co2B thin film exhibits the highest nanomechanical properties (i.e. H and E), while Co thin film has enhanced plasticity. The cobalt oxide thin film exhibits higher resistance to wear in comparison to the cobalt thin film, a fact that is confirmed by the nanoscratch analysis showing lower coefficient of friction for the oxide. Originality/value – This work is original.

In this work, cobalt oxide thin films were prepared by electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique. The influence of the substrate temperatures on properties of film was investigated. Phase transformation of cobalt oxide thin films due to the effect of different substrate temperature was also observed. Cyclic voltammetry was used to measure the performance of cobalt oxide supercapacitor. At higher substrate temperature, the cobalt oxide thin films exhibit the high specific capacitance due to the effect of phase transformation in cobalt oxide films.

Thin films are attractive materials to be used in laser, solar cells, sensors, phosphors, light emitting diodes, IR windows and flat panel displays. Several deposition methods have been employed to deposit thin films as reported by many researchers. In this report, the cobalt selenide thin films have been deposited onto microscope glass slide via successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. This deposition method is a simple method owing to the inexpensive technique and can produce films at a low bath temperature. All the samples were investigated by using XRD, FESEM and UV-visible spectrophotometer. The XRD pattern confirmed that cubic phase cobalt selenide thin films. The magnetic recording media used for hard disks in laptops and PC's is constantly being improved, leading to rapid increases in data rate and storage density. However, by the year 2010, it is predicted that the superparamagnetic limit will be reached, which is potentially insufficient for data storage. At the beginning of this century, CoCr -based alloys are used in longitudinal media since cobalt has a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. In this thesis, the static and dynamic properties of longitudinal recording thin films were investigated in order to explain and correlate their magnetic characteristics to their recording properties. The samples in question were test samples and some were in commercial use. Magnetic techniques such as high field ferromagnetic resonance and torque magnetometry were used to determine accurately the crystalline anisotropy field. High field ferromagnetic resonance is an ideal tool to determine the crystalline anisotropy, magnetisation, Lande g-factor and the gyromagnetic damping factor. In contrast to previous work, there are no FMR simulations and so all the relevant parameters were determined directly from measurement. Ideally, there should be no exchange interactions between the neighbouring cobalt grains; however, interactions between the grains within the CoCr-alloy recording layer exist. Previous work on the measurements of interactions in recording media involves measuring the sample's magnetisation. In this thesis, an alternative novel method involves torque magnetometry. Another technique that was used in this thesis is small angle neutron scattering, which aims to determine the size of the magnetic grains and compare that with the physical size determined from TEM, by Seagate. There is an extended section on CoxAg1-x granular thin films, which involves determining the sample's g-factor, effective anisotropy, grain size, exchange constant and comparing the FMR lineshapes at 9.5 and 92GHz.

Electron energy­‐loss spectroscopy (EELS) is a powerful method for providing detailed information on the bonding, chemical structure and electronic structure of materials. In this work, EELS has been used to correlate variations in magnetic properties of cobalt ferrite films with film thickness and post‐processing conditions. Magnetometry performed on as‐deposited and oxygen post­‐annealed films has shown saturation magnetization (Ms) to be strongly affected by post processing. This has been attributed to an enhancement in superexchange by reoxidation and cation ordering processes during post­‐anneal. To date this has not been confirmed using nanoanalytical techniques. This work addresses this issue. In particular, it is of interest to determine local changes in the degree of inversion of the ferrite spinel in order to link local chemical changes to bulk magnetic properties. Two sample preparation techniques were used to produce electron transparent sections – conventional ion beam milling and focussed ion beam (FIB) milling using a dual beam system. The suitability of each technique is discussed in terms of, sample damage, thickness, reproducibility and reliability. Aberration corrected HRTEM was used to investigate the microstructure of the thin films. Lattice strain and defect strain were quantified at increasing distance from the substrate/interface in as‐deposited and oxygen post­‐annealed cobalt ferrite films and structural defects responsible for misfit accommodation were characterised. Local variation in cation valence and coordination cobalt in an oxygen post­‐annealed film was investigated by monochromated EELS of the iron and cobalt L2,3­‐edges in the electron energy­‐loss spectrum. A method to determine the spinel degree of inversion (λ) by multiple linear least squares fitting was developed using data acquired from reference materials. A commercially available full multiple scattering code (FEFF 8.2) was used to aid interpretation of reference spectra and the fitting technique used to determine λ was applied to the cobalt ferrite thin film in order to identify variations in λ.

In situ polar Kerr effect measurements have been used to study the magnetic anisotropy of Au(111)/Co/X, Pd(111)/Co/X, Cu(111)/Co/X, and Pd(100)/Co/X sandwiches, where X is the nonmagnetic metal Ag, Au, Cu, Ir, and Pd or the insulator MgO. The films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). For the metals, we found that the magnitude of the Co/X perpendicular interface anisotropy is strongly peaked at ∼1 atomic layer (1.5-2.5 Å) coverage. To investigate structural influences on the anisotropy, we have used reflection high energy diffraction (RHEED) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) to measure changes resulting from overlayer coverage. Analysis of digitized RHEED images captured every ∼1 Å during metal overlayer coverage shows no abrupt change of the in-plane lattice constant. We have also investigated the out-of-plane lattice spacing as a function of nonmagnetic metal coverage by measuring LEED I-V curves along the (0,0) rod. In the case of Cu, where the LEED behavior is nearly kinematic, we see no evidence of any abrupt structural changes at ∼1 atomic layer coverage. These results suggest the observed peak in magnetic anisotropy is not structural in origin. The influence of an insulating overlayer, MgO, on the perpendicular magnetic properties was also investigated.

Le filtrage de spin est un phénomène physique qui permet de générer des courants d'électrons polarisés en spin grâce au transport sélectif à travers une barrière tunnel magnétique. Dans cette thèse, nous présentons une étude du matériau ferrite de cobalt (CoFe2O4), dont le caractère isolant et la température de Curie élevée en font un très bon candidat pour le filtrage de spin à température ambiante. L'élaboration des couches minces de CoFe2O4 a été réalisée par épitaxie par jets moléculaires assistée par plasma d'oxygène. Les propriétés structurales, chimiques et magnétiques ont été étudiées par plusieurs méthodes de caractérisation in situ et ex situ. Des jonctions tunnel à base de CoFe2O4 ont été préparées pour des mesures de transport tunnel polarisé en spin, soit par la méthode de Meservey-Tedrow, soit par des mesures de magnétorésistance tunnel (TMR). Dans ce dernier cas, nous avons porté une attention particulière au retournement magnétique de la barrière tunnel de CoFe2O4 et de la contre électrode magnétique (Co ou Fe3O4), une étape cruciale avant toute mesure de TMR. Dans les deux cas, les mesures de transport tunnel polarisé en spin ont révélé des polarisations significatives du courant tunnel à basse température, et à température ambiante pour les mesures de TMR. Par ailleurs, nous avons trouvé une dépendance unique entre la TMR et la tension appliquée qui reproduit celle prédite théoriquement pour les barrières tunnel magnétiques. Nous démontrons ainsi que les barrières tunnel de CoFe2O4 constituent un système modèle pour étudier le filtrage de spin dans une large gamme de températures.

This chapter details the efforts to bring the film Victor/Victoria to Broadway. For thirteen years since Blake Edwards' successful experience with Julie Andrews on the film, he had been renewing the theatrical rights to the property, the story and characters, at considerable expense. His longtime producer and partner Tony Adams was urging him to do something with it or cut it loose. One idea was to take its song-and-dance aspects to Broadway. But first Edwards, Adams, and choreographer Rob Marshall would have to cobble together some kind of a show. Edwards started writing the musical's “book,” and of course Mancini and Leslie Bricusse would try to revisit the same story they had tackled in 1982 and come up with Broadway-styled songs. Victor/Victoria was supposed to go into previews in the spring of 1995 with a Broadway opening soon after. But so many things were out of shape; the real reason for the delays and for its ultimate weaknesses as a show was the sudden and quite unexpected health crisis of its composer.

Population growth and urbanization have led to water scarcity and pollution, which is a health hazard not only to humans but also to the ecosystem in general. This has necessitated coming up with ways of treating water before consumption. Photocatalysis has proved to be one of the most promising cheap techniques that involve chemical utilization of solar energy. TiO2 widely used in photocatalysis absorbs a narrow range of the solar spectrum compared to ZnO. In this regard, this study aimed at preparing and optimizing cobalt-pigmented ZnO, which is applicable in photocatalytic water treatment. The objectives in this study were to fabricate zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films by anodization, pigment the fabricated films with varying cobalt concentrations, characterize the fabricated films optically, and investigate the cobalt-pigmented ZnO’s performance in the methylene blue degradation under UV light irradiation. Mirror-polished zinc plates were sonicated in ethanol and rinsed. Anodization was done at room temperature in 0.5 M oxalic acid at a constant voltage of 10 V for 60 min, and cobalt electrodeposited in the films. Post-deposition treatment was done at 250°C. Optical properties of the films were studied using a UV-VIS- NIR spectrophotometer in the solar range of 300–2500 nm. The photocatalytic activity of the fabricated films was studied in methylene blue solution degradation in the presence of UV light irradiation for 5 h. Cobalt pigmenting was observed to reduce reflectance and optical band gap from 3.34 to 3.10 eV indicating good photocatalytic properties. In this study, ZnO film pigmented with cobalt for 20 s was found to be the most photocatalytic with a rate constant of 0.0317 h−1 and hence had the optimum cobalt concentration for photocatalytic water treatment. This can be applied in small-scale water purification.

Here we report a systematic study of structural, optical, and magnetic measurements of Zn1-xCoxO (x = 0–0.22 at.%) by Ultrasound pyrolysis spray technique. The hexagonal wurtzite structure of our films is confirmed by X-ray diffraction with an average crystallite size estimated in the range of 18–30 nm. For the optical proprieties, using the Levenberg–Marquardt least squares rule, the experimental transmission measurements were perfectly adapted to the transmission data calculated by a combination of the Wemple-DiDomenico model, the absorption coefficient of an electronic transition and the Tauc-Urbach model. The concentration of the NCo absorption centers and the oscillator intensity f of the d-d transition of Co2+ ions are determined by the Smakula method. The presence of high concentrations of localized states in the thin films is responsible for the reduction in the width of optical bandgap.
