The model of the free electron theory is presented. The density of states and the Fermi–Dirac distribution function are discussed, leading to the specific heat of the electrons, the work function, thermionic emission, and the Schottky effects. As examples of applications the field-emission microscope and quartz–halogen lamps are discussed. The photoelectric effect and the energy diagrams relating to the junction between two metals are also discussed.

Photomultiplier (PMT) background derives from sources of photons, and from photoelectrons generation within a PMT. These may also act as a source of optical and radioactive background for neighbouring detectors. Dark count and dark current are reconciled by allowing for leakage currents flowing into the anode. The optimal gain setting follows from these considerations. Sources of background generated by the photocathode include thermionic emission; light generated within the PMT; gamma rays; muons and minimum ionizing particles (MIPs); insulator glow in the region of the anode; and residual gas. Pulse height distributions for dark counts, in terms of photoelectrons equivalent, reveal the size and magnitude distributions of the various contributions. Temperature and gain dependence are also covered. PMTs constructed from low radioactive glass provide ultra-low background.

Radio experienced even faster diffusion in Britain than in the United States. The stakes for control over the industry’s profits were thus particularly high. Marconi initially used its monopoly over fundamental payments to extract huge rents from the set makers. Then in the 1930s, when Marconi’s fundamental patents began to expire, the two major producers of radio valves (thermionic tubes) sought to use patents to gain control over the industry—offering packages of radio patents to manufacturers in return for tying the manufacturer to buying their valves. Yet this strategy proved unsuccessful, as independent firms such as Ekco, Pye, and Murphy were able to develop strong brands that counteracted the market power of the valve manufacturers, eventually giving them the upper hand in patent negotiations. This chapter explores the battle for control of the radio value chain.
