Streszczenie:
Information from an image occurs over multiple and distinct spatial scales. Image pyramid multiresolution representations are a useful data structure for image analysis and manipulation over a spectrum of spatial scales. This paper employs the Gaussian–Laplacian pyramid to separately treat different spatial frequency bands of a texture. First, we generate three images corresponding to three levels of the Gaussian–Laplacian pyramid for an input image to capture intrinsic details. Then, we aggregate features extracted from gray and color texture images using bioinspired texture descriptors, information-theoretic measures, gray-level co-occurrence matrix feature descriptors, and Haralick statistical feature descriptors into a single feature vector. Such an aggregation aims at producing features that characterize textures to their maximum extent, unlike employing each descriptor separately, which may lose some relevant textural information and reduce the classification performance. The experimental results on texture and histopathologic image datasets have shown the advantages of the proposed method compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Such findings emphasize the importance of multiscale image analysis and corroborate that the descriptors mentioned above are complementary.

<p>Content-based image retrieval focuses on intuitive and efficient methods for retrieving images from databases based on the content of the images. A new entropy function that serves as a measure of information content in an image termed as 'an information theoretic measure' is devised in this paper. Among the various query paradigms, 'query by example' (QBE) is adopted to set a query image for retrieval from a large image database. In this paper, colour and texture features are extracted using the new entropy function and the dominant colour is considered as a visual feature for a particular set of images. Thus colour and texture features constitute the two-dimensional feature vector for indexing the images. The low dimensionality of the feature vector speeds up the atomic query. Indices in a large database system help retrieve the images relevant to the query image without looking at every image in the database. The entropy values of colour and texture and the dominant colour are considered for measuring the similarity. The utility of the proposed image retrieval system based on the information theoretic measures is demonstrated on a benchmark dataset.</p><p><strong>Defence Science Journal, 2011, 61(5), pp.415-430</strong><strong><strong>, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.61.1177</strong></strong></p>

<span lang="EN-US">Human ear recognition can be defined as a branch of biometrics that uses images of the ears to identify people. This paper provides a new ear print recognition approach depending on the combination of gradient direction pattern (GDP2) and difference theoretic texture features (DTTF) features. The region of interest (ROI), the gray scale of the ear print was cut off, noise removal by the median filter, histogram equalization, and local normalization (LN) are the first steps in this approach. After the image has been processed, it is used as input for the fusion of GDP2 and DTTF for extracting the features of ear print images. Lastly, the Gaussian distribution (GD) was utilized to compute the distance among fusion feature vectors (FV) for ear print images for recognizing ear print images for people using a set of images that had been trained and tested. The unconstrained ear recognition challenge (UERC) database, which comprises 330 subjects for ear print images, provides the approach that was suggested by employing ear print databases. Furthermore, experimental results on images from a benchmark dataset reveal that statistical-rely super-resolution methods outperform other algorithms in ear recognition accuracy, which was around 93.70% in this case.</span>

This paper presents a theoretical and empirical investigation into the ways in which different listeners perceive similarity relationships in different kinds of music. We first extend the current understanding of similarity relations in music by drawing together theory and evidence from general cognitive psychology, cognitive psychology of music, and music theory. In the empirical study, trained musicians and nonmusicians rated the similarity of pairs of extracts from piano pieces by Beethoven (Sonata op. 10, no. 1, first movement) and Schoenberg (Klavierstüück op. 33a) and provided adjective ratings for each extract. Similarity judgments were found to be context-specific and roughly equivalent for both types of listener, and were primarily based on more "surface" features such as dynamics, articulation, texture, and contour rather than on "deeper" features such as motivic or harmonic relationships. The implications for music-theoretic views of similarity are discussed.

Streszczenie:
Geometrical product specification and verification (GPS) is the only worldwide tolerancing specification language available for unambiguously communicating functional requirements and precisely expressing geometrical tolerances of workpieces on technical drawings. Although the understanding and application of GPS are of vital importance for modern manufacturing industry, the latest GPS standards contain huge amounts of data, information and knowledge that are obscurely linked together, so they are very difficult for designers, engineers and metrologists to understand, remember and comprehensively use them. This is especially true for surface texture that is one of the most complicated geometrical characteristics in GPS domain. To overcome the implementation barrier of GPS surface texture, a novel knowledge-based solution supported formally by a unified knowledge modeling of the complete GPS surface texture standard chain has been researched. This knowledge model can serve as a formal basis for developing more intelligent and reliable tolerance design and measurement systems. This paper starts with an introduction on how to build up a formal knowledge model based on category theory, called categorical fibration model, to unified acquisition and representation of all surface texture knowledge. It then moves on to define a recursive knowledge refinement process for the devised model to enable the recursive multi-level GPS knowledge transformations and refinements. This knowledge model is validated naturally by checking rules identified from category theoretic notions. Finally, this paper presents a general framework for applying the modeled GPS knowledge in practice, from the aspects of the integrated and complete modeling of all surface texture knowledge, detailed knowledge acquisition and modeling examples for four sub-knowledge bases of the proposed software solution, core functional features of this software, and a comprehensive case study for testing its validity and usability. This knowledge-based solution facilitates life cycle collaboration and integration of the complete GPS surface texture chain to reduce product development cost and lead time, and to ensure functional requirements of geometrical workpieces.

In this work, we propose a novel method for determining oriented energy features of an image. Oriented energy features, useful for many machine vision applications like contour detection, texture segmentation and motion analysis, are determined from the filters whose outputs are enhanced at the edges of the image at a given orientation. We use the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of graph Laplacian for determining the oriented energy features of an image. Our method is based on spectral graph theoretical approach in which a graph is assigned complex-valued edge weights whose phases encode orientation information. These edge weights give rise to a complex-valued Hermitian Laplacian whose spectrum enables us to extract oriented energy features of the image. We perform a set of numerical experiments to determine the efficiency and characteristics of the proposed method. In addition, we apply our feature extraction method to texture segmentation problem. We do this in comparison with other known methods, and show that our method performs better for various test textures.

Streszczenie:
Currently, screen content images (SCIs) are widely used in our modern society. However, since SCIs have distinctly different properties compared to natural images, traditional quality assessment methods of natural images cannot precisely evaluate the quality of SCIs. Thus, we propose a blind quality evaluation method for SCIs based on regionalized structural features that are closely relevant to the intrinsic quality of SCIs. Firstly, the features of textual and pictorial regions of SCIs are extracted separately. For textual regions, since they contain noticeable structural information, we propose improved histograms of oriented gradients extracted from multi-order derivatives as structural features. For pictorial regions, since human vision is sensitive to texture information and luminance variation, we adopt texture as the structural feature; meanwhile, luminance is used as the auxiliary feature. The local derivative pattern and the shearlet local binary pattern are used to extract texture in the spatial and shearlet domains, respectively. Secondly, to derive the quality of textual and pictorial regions, two mapping functions are respectively trained from their features to subjective values. Finally, an activity weighting strategy is proposed to combine the quality of textual and pictorial regions. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art methods.

Texturing can be used to functionalize the surface of plastic parts and, in particular, to modify the interaction with fluids. Wetting functionalization can be used for microfluidics, medical devices, scaffolds, and more. In this research, hierarchical textures were generated on steel mold inserts using femtosecond laser ablation to transfer on plastic parts surface via injection molding. Different textures were designed to study the effects of various hierarchical geometries on the wetting behavior. The textures are designed to create wetting functionalization while avoiding high aspect ratio features, which are complex to replicate and difficult to manufacture at scale. Nano-scale ripples were generated over the micro-scale texture by creating laser-induced periodic surface structures. The textured molds were then replicated by micro-injection molding using polypropylene and poly(methyl methacrylate). The static wetting behavior was investigated on steel inserts and molded parts and compared to the theoretical values obtained from the Cassie–Baxter and Wenzel models. The experimental results showed correlations between texture design, injection molding replication, and wetting properties. The wetting behavior on the polypropylene parts followed the Cassie–Baxter model, while for PMMA, a composite wetting state of Cassie–Baxter and Wenzel was observed.

Streszczenie:
A physically based theoretical model is proposed to investigate the mechanical behaviour and crystallographic texture evolution of irradiated face-centred cubic metals. This model is capable of capturing the main features of irradiated polycrystalline materials including irradiation hardening, post-yield softening and plasticity localization. Numerical results show a good agreement with experimental data for both unirradiated and irradiated stress–strain relationships. The study of crystallographic texture reveals that the initial randomly distributed texture of unirradiated metals under tensile loading can evolve into a mixture of [111] and [100] textures. Regarding the irradiated case, crystallographic texture develops in a different way, and an extra part of [110] texture evolves into [100] and [111] textures. Thus, [100] and [111] textures become dominant more quickly compared with those of the unirradiated case for the reason that [100] and [111]-oriented crystals have higher strength, and their plastic deformation behaviours are more active than other oriented crystals. It can be concluded that irradiation-induced defects can affect both the mechanical behaviour and texture evolution of metals, both of which are closely related to irradiation hardening.

Streszczenie:
The rotating ultrasonic-assisted grinding (RUAG) experiment of the conical grinding wheel generated the intermittent pit-shaped micro-texture on the surface of the workpiece, reducing thermal damage and improving the lubrication characteristics compared with conventional grinding (CG). To further optimize the surface properties, this paper studied the formation mechanism of micro-texture. This study used as basis the theory that micro-debris volume equals the macroscopic material removal one to establish the mathematical equation of grinding depth. Thereafter, formulas of micro-texture feature parameters, including pit length, pit depth, and texture spacing were deduced. The solved microscopic grinding depth was alternatingly positive and negative, indicating that the alternating separation between the grinding grain and workpiece caused intermittent pits in the grinding. Through response surface analysis (RSA), this paper analyzed the relationships among macroscopic grinding depth, micro-texture feature parameters, and machining parameters (i.e., amplitude, feed rate, and rotational speed). Single-factor experiments of machining parameters, with finite element simulation and experiment methods, were performed to verify the theoretical micro-texture features. The simulated program formed three-dimensional surfaces with micro-textures. Their measurement results were consistent with the theoretical ones. Experimental results proved that the range of pit length covers the theoretical ones, further verifying the accuracy of the grinding depth model. For this grinding wheel, the 8–10 μm amplitude was optimal for better roughness, lubrication, and thermal damage. Roughness was improved when increasing the rotational speed or reducing the feed rate based on the experiment. If the rotational speed and feed rate exceed the limiting values, then continuous grinding will break down the abrasive grains and even damage the cubic boron nitride (CBN) coating. Experimental results likewise showed that the pit shape was closely related to the surface properties, which deserves further investigation.

Streszczenie:
Text Segmentation and Binarization is a very difficult and challenging task in case of unclear document images because of the difference between text and background of the text. Threshold play a vital role for text binarization because it separates the foreground and background of images and very difficult to find a good threshold. Many approaches have been available to find the threshold for text segmentation and binarization. All of them have its own advantage and disadvantage. In this project report, an approach has been proposed to text segmentation and binarization from challenging and sophisticated document images using difference theoretic texture feature. In this proposed algorithm, the adaptive threshold, contrast stretching and gamma correction have used for enhancement and binarization of document images. An adaptive global threshold algorithm merges with contrast stretching and gamma correction to enhance the document image. The difference theoretic texture feature is used for text extraction from an image. The difference theoretic feature technique has also used to segment text area from document images. This technique provides better results for all unclear and clear images as compare to other techniques. The proposed technique has been implemented using MATLAB 2012. This proposed technique has been tested on five recent document image binarization contest (DIBCO) 2009, 2011 and 2013 and handwritten-DIBCO 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 datasets [1] [2] [3] [4] and achieves performance 81.22%, 82.86%, 85.10%, 83.40%, 76.04% respectively. It is also tested on many different challenging document images which is captured by mobile phone. This technique provides better results for all unclear and clear images as compared to other techniques.

Magnetic skyrmions has many appealing and intriguing features that make them interesting both for possible applications but also from a pure theoretical point of view.

Inferences regarding pre-colonial southwestern cooking are limited by preservation and the ambiguity of multiple-use features. Documented techniques are stone boiling, pit roasting, boiling in pottery jars, and heating on comals or griddle stones, with fermentation as an additional food-processing category. The plastic nature of pottery allowed the design of vessel forms specifically for cooking, but storage rather than cooking was the original impetus for pottery production in the Sonoran Desert. The subsequent northward spread of pottery technology does appear to coincide with cooking use, despite initial inefficient vessel forms. Theoretical models and experimental studies have linked subsequent changes in vessel shape and surface texture with gains in efficiency once cooking jars were fully embraced by farming households. Fermentation evidence is arguable in the southern Southwest, and the apparent absence in the north is enigmatic. Residue studies and the use of cooking as an integrative framework hold potential for future research.

Fashion by Design, Second Edition, explains how the elements and principles of design relate to fashion, based on the philosophy of the Bauhaus Experiment of the 1920s and 1930s, which is the foundation for art education in the United States. The book is structured into three parts: the stages of the design process (inspiration, identification, conceptualization, exploration/refinement, definition/modeling, communication, and production); physical elements (such as line, shape, form, space, texture, light, pattern, color, and value); and theoretical principles (like balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion, and unity) of design. This is reinforced by fashion designer profiles and illustrations covering art, architecture, and fashion. The book aims to improve the designer’s eye for creating fashion and related art forms; to identify terminology used in the communication of fashion; and to show how other factors, such as the human form, clothing structure, historic silhouettes, fashion trends, culture, and industry trends, may impact the development of a line or a collection. New to this Edition: - New introductory chapter on the stages of the design process - New chapter on sustainable design - New end-of-chapters exercises with application to the fields of fashion design (including the development of a design journal), fashion merchandising (such as styling, product development, buying or trend research) and theater arts (such as costume, sets, lighting) STUDIO Features: - Flashcards based on the glossary to enhance comprehension of key concepts and terms - Downloadable “Paper Dolls” pdfs for students to interact with key concepts of the design process - Study smarter with Self-Assessment Quizzes featuring scored results and personalized study tips Instructor’s Resources: - PowerPoint Slides for each chapter - Instructor’s Guide with sample course outlines for teaching and tools for integrating the STUDIO with the course

Streszczenie:
Texture analysis research attempts to solve two important kinds of problems: texture segmentation and texture classification. In some applications, textured image segmentation can be solved by classification of small regions obtained from image partition. Two classes of features are proposed in the decision theoretic recognition problem for textured image classification. The first class derives from the mean co-occurrence matrices: contrast, energy, entropy, homogeneity, and variance. The second class is based on fractal dimension and is derived from a box-counting algorithm. For the purpose of increasing texture classification performance, the notions “mean co-occurrence matrix” and “effective fractal dimension” are introduced and utilized. Some applications of the texture and fractal analyses are presented: road analysis for moving objective, defect detection in textured surfaces, malignant tumour detection, remote land classification, and content based image retrieval. The results confirm the efficiency of the proposed methods and algorithms.

Content-based image retrieval aims to acquire images from huge databases by analyzing their visual features like color, texture, shape, and spatial relationship. The search for superior accuracy in image retrieval has resulted in concentrating more on semantic gap reduction between the low-level features and high level human reasoning. Fuzzy theory is a prevailing methodology which helps in attaining this goal by using attributes and interpretations similar to human reasoning. The vagueness and impreciseness in image data and the retrieval process can be modeled by fuzzy sets. This chapter analyses fuzzy theoretic approaches in various stages of content-based image retrieval system. Various fuzzy-based feature descriptors are discussed along with different fuzzy classification and indexing algorithms for content-based image retrieval. This chapter also presents an overview of various fuzzy distance and similarity measures for image retrieval. A novel fuzzy theoretic retrieval for finger vein biometric images is also proposed in this chapter with experiment and analysis.

Streszczenie:
The integrated aesthetic articulated in chapter 3 grounds a new approach to the Patio of Comares and its enigmatic façade. The chapter begins with a historical overview of poetic inscriptions on Islamic luxury textiles, which points to an intersection between a specific type of Nasrid textiles and an ingenious Andalusian poetic genre, both designated by the term muwashshaḥāt. Shared constitutive features allow those textiles to inform the understanding of the poetry and the reverse, and, moreover, their interrelationship further serves to illuminate architecture. The theoretical argument, reinforced by Ibn al-Haytham's optics discussed in chapter 1, leads to a historical hypothesis: the use of textiles to design inter-medial spaces in the Alhambra, belied by the absence of furnishings in situ today. Supporting evidence from other Islamic sites is adduced. A comparative analysis of the Façade of Comares and the Nasrid textiles known as "Alhambra silks" exemplifies the concept of visual harmony as a design principle. The conclusion proposes a further dimension of the inter-medial relationship through the concept of "textile architecture," that is the temporary deployment of large-scale textiles with architectural functions, in order to reframe the ceremonial use of the Patio of Comares.

In attempting in Retour à Reims (2009) to retrieve his earlier life experience, the sociologist Didier Eribon conveys the affective charge associated with the return to his working-class origins. The current study considers how the social and sexual obstacles that such a return brings means that the encounter with the real is frequently filtered through a series of intertextual references. With notions of digression and detour (theoretical, textual and bibliographical) forming a recurring feature in the work, access to the real thus comes via a process of circuitous re-appropriation. Eribon’s textual detours involve consideration of figures such as Foucault, Bourdieu and Wideman whose choices, respectively, of the fields of the historical archive, sociological enquiry and the genre of autobiography Eribon explores.

The wavelet packet transformation is used to carry out the image decomposition. Through experiment results, the proposed recognition method has the high precision, fast speed, and its correct recognition rate is improved by an average 6.13% than that of existing recognition methods. In the process of matching and recognition, the hierarchical recognition method is presented to improve the recognition speed and accuracy. The wavelet packet transformation is used to carry out the image decomposition. Through experiment results, the proposed recognition method has the high precision, fast speed, and its correct recognition rate is improved by an average 6.13% than that of existing recognition methods. These researches development in this paper can provide an important theoretical reference and practical significance to improve the real-time and accuracy on fuzzy target recognition.

Streszczenie:
Th e purpose of the article is to elucidate the evolution of the fi ve-string guitar in Spain during the Baroque period. It acquires a multidimensional character: interpretation techniques are developed, the repertoire is enriched, there is a plethora of talented performers and composers who promote new trends in the Spanish guitar practice. Th e author studies three major innovations of the time that led to the essential change of the guitar practice: the replacement of the polyphonic style with the homophone-harmonic one; introduction of a new notation system – Alfabeto; the formation of the Spanish composers’ school. Treatises written by J.C. Amat, G. Sans, L. R. de Ribayaz, S. de Murcia are analyzed as well as the time repertoire composed by famous performers and composers. Th e most important features of the Spanish baroque guitar style are revealed in the conclusions: favorite genres, typical guitar texture, etc.

Streszczenie:
The training engineer's work is about tuning software to provide undergraduate students with a practical learning method. It thus seems to sustain the interaction paradigm: learning is a dynamic of human actions and software reactions, similar to a serious game in a virtual world. Education of the engineers is to produce theoretical knowledge in the courses and carrying out practical activities to strengthen the information obtained. If practical activities require the physical presence of the student in the lab, the work of course, where it is not required, you can rely on the support of technology. The trend, at least in the textile, education is to participate less classes and to learn in a more familiar environment. The field of technical textiles requires knowledge of many stages of processing and phenomena's. Traditional approach to teaching these procedures has the disadvantage of a presentation largely of information not directly corresponding with the actual phenomenon. For this purpose requires the use of multimedia presentations for the connection between information and the phenomenon described. The goal of this paper is to present an LMS (Learning Management Systems) based on open source software that can be used to examine the processes of obtaining technical fabrics. Xerte is an e-learning environment created by authors at Nottingham University; it provides open source tools making it easy for both technical and non technical content authors to create very interactive learning resources. It is a stand-alone fully featured e-learning environment designed to allow the creation of rich interactive material for users who are familiar with scripting.

Streszczenie:
The vadose (unsaturated) zone forms a major hydrologic link between the ground surface and underlying aquifers. To understand properly its role in protecting groundwater from near surface sources of contamination, one must be able to analyze quantitatively water flow and contaminant transport in variably saturated subsurface environments that are highly heterogeneous, often consisting of multiple geologic units and/or high and/or low permeability inclusions. The specific objectives of this research were: (i) to develop efficient and accurate tools for probabilistic delineation of dominant geologic features comprising the vadose zone; (ii) to develop a complementary set of data analysis tools for discerning the fractal properties of hydraulic and transport parameters of highly heterogeneous vadose zone; (iii) to develop and test the associated computational methods for probabilistic analysis of flow and transport in highly heterogeneous subsurface environments; and (iv) to apply the computational framework to design an “optimal” observation network for monitoring and forecasting the fate and migration of contaminant plumes originating from agricultural activities. During the course of the project, we modified the third objective to include additional computational method, based on the notion that the heterogeneous formation can be considered as a mixture of populations of differing spatial structures. Regarding uncertainly analysis, going beyond approaches based on mean and variance of system states, we succeeded to develop probability density function (PDF) solutions enabling one to evaluate probabilities of rare events, required for probabilistic risk assessment. In addition, we developed reduced complexity models for the probabilistic forecasting of infiltration rates in heterogeneous soils during surface runoff and/or flooding events Regarding flow and transport in variably saturated, spatially heterogeneous formations associated with fine- and coarse-textured embedded soils (FTES- and CTES-formations, respectively). We succeeded to develop first-order and numerical frameworks for flow and transport in three-dimensional (3-D), variably saturated, bimodal, heterogeneous formations, with single and dual porosity, respectively. Regarding the sampling problem defined as, how many sampling points are needed, and where to locate them spatially in the horizontal x₂x₃ plane of the field. Based on our computational framework, we succeeded to develop and demonstrate a methdology that might improve considerably our ability to describe quntitaively the response of complicated 3-D flow systems. The results of the project are of theoretical and practical importance; they provided a rigorous framework to modeling water flow and solute transport in a realistic, highly heterogeneous, composite flow system with uncertain properties under-specified by data. Specifically, they: (i) enhanced fundamental understanding of the basic mechanisms of field-scale flow and transport in near-surface geological formations under realistic flow scenarios, (ii) provided a means to assess the ability of existing flow and transport models to handle realistic flow conditions, and (iii) provided a means to assess quantitatively the threats posed to groundwater by contamination from agricultural sources.
