This paper is a close textual analysis of what learning is in the context of learning spaces. The aim is for critical rhetorical discourse to what scholars say or write about a topic and the deeper meaning of their words. The close textual analysis is about the influence of learning spaces to have significant experiences for the network generation born in an era of information technology. The paper is to introduce a reason to pay close attention to the process of textual analysis. The process with its complexity reveals the creative density of rhetoric as well as the reason behind the words. Our compass point toward understanding what learning truly means within the context of learning spaces. But this journey is no mere academic exercise; it is a call to engage in critical rhetorical discourse, where ink meets parchment, and ideas crystalize. This study reveals how symbolic action, form and content, context, and creative concentration function within the artifact. The claim is that proposition for close textual analysis is to prepare the listener to listen and hear the importance of rhetorical discourse is taking place, as well as understanding of words to gain meaning to rhetorical discourse and critical thinking.

Abstract: This paper, based on the Socio-Discursive Interactionism theoretical epistemological framework, aims at showing the importance of the notion of prototypicity to analyse texts that circulate in society. Regarding theoretical concepts, we consider, firstly, that texts are global communicative units that always interact with the social practice where they are integrated; consequently their textual linguistic materialisation depends on the language activity in which they are situated. Secondly, texts are obviously linked to a textual genre which has unique and generic aspects constantly interacting with each other. By considering these aspects, we can see how the notion of family resemblance or family airs related to that of prototypicity can give us leads to define a textual analysis methodology that takes into account the complexity of the text as our object of analysis. In order to prove the importance of the prototypicity to analyse texts we have chosen two representative texts of two textual persuasive genres: one editorial and one political poster that were circulated in Portugal in March 2002, at the time of the elections for the Portuguese Prime Minister. Our study provides evidence that a text has singular characteristics, but it also has generic ones related to genre aspects.

Textual analysis, implemented at scale, has become an important addition to the methodological toolbox of finance. In this review, given the proliferation of papers now using this method, we first provide an updated survey of the literature while focusing on a few broad topics—social media, political bias, and detecting fraud. We do not attempt to survey the various statistical methods and instead initially focus on the construction and use of lexicons in finance. We then center the discussion on readability as an attribute frequently incorporated in contemporaneous research, arguing that its use begs the question of what we are measuring. Finally, we discuss how the literature might build on the intent of measuring readability to measure something more appropriate and more broadly relevant—complexity.

According to Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) theory the structural shape of the clause in English is determined by the three metafunctions — ideational, interpersonal and textual (Halliday 1994:179). In Japanese, the situation is similar as far as ideational (Teruya 1998) and interpersonal (Fukui 1998) meanings are concerned. With respect to the textual metafunction, however, the situation appears to be different. Due to the presence of ellipsis, both anaphoric Subject ellipsis and formal exophoric Subject ellipsis (Hasan 1996), along with the operation of clause chaining, Japanese appears to organise textually over another kind of unit, the Theme unit. This paper will explore the Theme unit as it functions to organise discourse in Japanese, offering grammatical and semantic recognition criteria within a Systemic Functional theoretical framework. Justification for the theorisation of this textual unit will be presented together with a number of examples. In Japanese, the Theme unit is the unit within which Theme and Rheme unfold. Theme is realised by first position in the Theme unit, and the Theme unit can map onto clause simplexes, complexes, clauses within a complex and across sentences (in written texts). The paper will conclude with a discussion of the function of the Theme unit and the nature or status of the Theme unit within the SFL model of language, arguing that the notion is possibly applicable to the analyses of other languages, including English.

A pesar del relativamente escaso uso de técnicas de análisis textual y de análisis del sentimiento en finanzas y contabilidad, éstas tienen un gran potencial en contabilidad, tanto por el elevado volumen de documentos utilizados para la comunicación de información financiera como por el crecimiento en el uso de herramientas digitales y medios de comunicación social. En este sentido, estas técnicas de análisis pueden ayudar a los investigadores a analizar pistas ocultas o buscar información adicional a la observada a través de los estados financieros, incrementando la cantidad y calidad de la información tradicionalmente utilizada, y proporcionando una nueva perspectiva de análisis. Por ello, el objetivo de este estudio es realizar una revisión del uso del análisis textual y del análisis del sentimiento en contabilidad. Tras presentar los conceptos de análisis textual y análisis del sentimiento y justificar teóricamente su papel en la investigación en contabilidad, llevamos a cabo una revisión de la literatura previa en el uso de estas técnicas en finanzas y contabilidad y describimos las principales técnicas de análisis del sentimiento, así como el procedimiento a seguir para el uso de esta metodología. Finalmente, sugerimos tres líneas de investigación futura que pueden beneficiarse del uso del análisis textual y del análisis del sentimiento. In spite of the relatively scarce use of textual analysis and sentiment analysis techniques in finance and accounting, they have great potential in accounting, both because of the volume of documents used for the communication of information and due to the growth in the use of digital tools and social media. In that regard, these techniques of analysis may help researchers to analyse hidden clues or look for additional information to that one observed through financial information, increasing the quantity and quality of the information traditionally used, and providing a new perspective of analysis. The aim of this study is to review the use of textual analysis and sentiment analysis in accounting. After presenting the concepts of textual analysis and sentiment analysis and expose their interest in accounting, we perform a review of the previous literature on the use of these techniques in finance and accounting and describe the main techniques of sentiment analysis, as well as the procedure to be followed for the use of this methodology. Finally, we suggest three lines of future research that may benefit from the use of textual and sentiment analysis.

Objectives: To present a textual data analysis of the Union Budgets of India for financial years 2019-20 to 2023-24). Examining the policy narratives, key announcements, and thematic emphasis in Budget speeches to explore about the government's priorities. Methods : The analysis is centered on the budget presented by Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister of India. The study emphases on the budget speeches conveyed by her and serves a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques to classify the main themes and primacy of the budget. To categorize the discourse into diverse subjects, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Topic Modeling and Sentiment Analysis methods are used. Findings: The outcomes recommend that the budget emphases on encouraging commercial growth, improving living standard, and providing liberation to many sectors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. “India”, “Government”, “Infrastructure”, “Sector” etc. are some of the words which are used repeatedly in each budget presented. Further high value of Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) suggests that India (0.323), Government (0.315), Tax (0.268), Crores (0.380) are some of the words which are the most important and relevant words during Budget presentations. Correlation matrix suggests that topic 1 is highly negatively correlated with topic 2 (coefficient value – (-0.832)). The paper concludes by deliberating the repercussions of the budget on the Indian economy and the challenges that are to be addressed to attain the budget's intents. Novelty : Largely, the research paper delivers an all-inclusive understanding of the Indian Union Budget and its possible influence on the country's economic and social development. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide insightful evidence of phenomena in organization and management theory. Textual data sets consist of two different elements, namely qualitative and quantitative aspects. Researchers often combine methods to harness both aspects. However, they frequently do this in a comparative, convergent, or sequential way. Design/methodology/approach – The paper illustrates and discusses a hybrid textual data analysis approach employing the qualitative software application GABEK-WinRelan in a case study of an Austrian retail bank. Findings – The paper argues that a hybrid analysis method, fully intertwining qualitative and quantitative analysis simultaneously on the same textual data set, can deliver new insight into more facets of a data set. Originality/value – A hybrid approach is not a universally applicable solution to approaching research and management problems. Rather, this paper aims at triggering and intensifying scientific discussion about stronger integration of qualitative and quantitative data and analysis methods in management research.

Propomo-nos a investigar o plano de texto, a enunciação e a argumentação em projetos de lei e em suas respectivas leis ordinárias que tratam da (in)segurança alimentar. Em termos teóricos, apoiamo-nos na Linguística Textual, na Linguística da Enunciação e na Análise Textual dos Discursos. Nosso estudo segue a abordagem qualitativa de natureza interpretativista, acompanha o método indutivo e é do tipo documental. Nossas hipóteses de uma materialidade textual prototípica, enunciativa e argumentativa se confirmaram ao atestar planos de texto fixos, organizados por sequências textuais, com marcas linguísticas da enunciação que seguem uma orientação argumentativa. Desse modo, os resultados apontam que a estrutura composicional é guiada por argumentos e propósitos comunicativos, ademais, as manifestações da responsabilidade enunciativa revelam distanciamento ou aproximação do conteúdo proposicional, bem como conferem autoria por meio das assinaturas finais nos projetos e nas leis. Portanto, nossas contribuições elucidam textos político-jurídicos importantes para o bem-estar social.

The article presents Lithuanian linguistic cultural image of truth reconstructed from textual data. Textual data consists of contemporary and archaic (folklore and paremia) texts. The picture of truth distinguished from the textual data is highly philosophical, what proves the opinion that language is the reflection of a nation’s philosophy and worldview. Contemporary Lithuanian language reflects two main semantic aspects of truth: absolutism and relativism. Absolutism views truth as eternal and unique, forming the background of peoples’ lives. This type of truth usually has its source in religion. Subjectivism views truth as subjective and relative, depending on time, circumstances and opinions. The boundary between subjective truth and lie is very vague. This type of truth is never unique and has a pragmatic aspect which is either collective or individual. However, the dialogue of different sides is very important as it can help to achieve the final, objective truth. Epistemological aspect of truth is also salient. Two main aspects concerning truth cognition are scepticism and dogmatism. Cognition and knowledge is seen as the way to achieve the truth; however, sceptical question is raised whether truth cognition is possible at all. Dogmatism accepts certain facts or dogmas as naturally true. Truth is usually presented as unpleasant, painful, dangerous and unclear; however, it is highly important. Textual data also reflect a lot of opposites of truth: lie, unknown, myth, bluff, artificiality, half-truth, benefit.

Semantic fingerprinting is a leading AI solution that combines recent developments from cognitive neuroscience and psycholinguistics to analyze text with human-level accuracy. As an efficient method of quantifying text, it has already found its application in finance where the semantic fingerprints of company descriptions have been shown to successfully predict stock return correlations of Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) constituents. By extension, it has been suggested that diversified portfolios could be constructed to exploit the fundamental (dis)similarity between companies’ core activities (measured by the semantic overlap of company descriptions). This paper follows the performance of two portfolios made of the same DJIA constituent companies: the “minimum semantic concentration” portfolio (constructed with text-based portfolio weights) and the traditional “minimum variance” portfolio, over a time span of 16 years including two high volatility events: the 2007 − 2009 financial crisis and the COVID pandemic. The results confirm that textual analysis using semantic fingerprinting is consistently successful in predicting stock return correlations and is valuable as a portfolio selection criterion. However, in times of high market volatility the fundamental information given by the companies’ core activities, while still relevant, might carry less weight.

The 19th and early 20th centuries were, for English-speaking Western nations, marked by calamitous change. Among those changes was the way in which Western society handled and treated people who suffered from mental illness, the “mad” as it were. The insane asylum, a peculiar outcropping of culture that combined Christian saviorism with the nascent field of psychiatry, became the go-to vehicle for the care and maintenance of suffering patients. The institution gained such a foothold in society that every American state had at least one asylum, and many had several. After just a few decades, the insane asylum was one of the most powerful institutions in the West. The speed at which the insane asylum embedded itself in culture at such a profound depth was astounding. Scholars have recently been exploring this institution to deconstruct and explain the meteoric rise and fall of such a behemoth. This review will distill and evaluate one such crucial piece of literature to be added to the index of scholarship on the topic.

This study aims to explain analytically the receptions of the Qur'an in the animated movie, episode Nussa: Girls Talk. A part of the Qur'anic verse from Surat Al-Ahzab: 33 presented in this episode shows that there are makeup rules for women that tend to be understood textually. Based on the categorization of interaction between religious followers and the holy book by Sam D. Gill and Teun A Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis as an analytical tool, the study found that the reception in the episode of Nussa: Girls Talk is both exegetical and informative. The interpretation (tafsir) presented in this episode is textual. The form of textual interpretation was chosen by the producers because of its concise and considered more relevant for children as the main targets/audiences. Besides, the socio-religious background of theproducers of Nussa: Girls Talk is known to have a close relationship with the hijrah movement; an Islamic movement that tends to be fundamentalist. As a results, textual understanding develops and tends to dominate in this animated movie.

Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar reflexões teórico-metodológicas sobre o processo de letramentos bilíngues de estudantes surdos no ensino superior. Tomamos a enunciação verbo-visual como categoria bakhtiniana que direciona as hipóteses de leitura em português pelos estudantes surdos e ocupa centralidade na produção textual sinalizada em língua brasileira de sinais. Da obra do folclorista Câmara Cascudo foram selecionadas lendas brasileiras para análise textual de elementos coesivos que operam nas estratégias de referenciação no texto narrativo em língua brasileira de sinais e na língua portuguesa. Como contribuições teórico-metodológicas, apresentamos a utilização da pedagogia visual e de um roteiro que orienta a leitura com destaque aos elementos intertextuais, paratextuais e textuais na produção dos sentidos do texto. O videorregistro de lendas brasileiras em libras contribui para a ampliação do repertório de gêneros textuais sinalizados, pesquisa e diversificação de léxico regional e composição de acervo de materiais e tecnologias em língua de sinais, para a constituição de uma cultura letrada. Bilingual literacies of deaf students in higher education: a study with Brazilian legends Abstract: The objective of this study is to present theoretical and methodological reflections on the process of bilingual literacies of deaf students in higher education. We understand that the verbovisual enunciation is the Bakhtinian category that mobilizes the hypotheses of reading in Portuguese by deaf students and occupies the centrality in the Brazilian sign language textual production. We selected Brazilian legends of the work of the folklorist Câmara Cascudo, for textual analysis of cohesive elements that influence the referencing strategies in the narrative text in Brazilian sign language and in the Portuguese. As theoretical-methodological contributions, we present the use of visual pedagogy and a script that guides reading, with emphasis on intertextual, paratextual and textual elements in the production of the meanings of the text. The recording of the Brazilian sign language in video of Brazilian legends contributes to the expansion of the repertoire of textual genres signaled in the Brazilian sign language, research and diversification of the regional lexicon and the composition of materials and technologies in sign language for the constitution of a literate culture. Seleccionamos leyendas brasileñas de la obra de la folclorista Câmara Cascudo, para el análisis textual de elementos cohesivos que influyen en las estrategias de referenciación en el texto narrativo en lengua de señas brasileña y en portugués. Como aportes teóricos y metodológicos, se presenta el uso de la pedagogía visual y un guión que orienta la lectura con énfasis en elementos intertextuales, paratextuales y textuales en la producción de los sentidos del texto. La producción de leyendas brasileñas en lengua de señas videograbada contribuye a la expansión del repertorio de géneros textuales señalados en la lengua de señas brasileña, la investigación y diversificación del léxico regional y la composición de materiales y tecnologías en lengua de signos para la constitución de una cultura letrada. The current study tries to tackle some cartoons about Brexit, aiming at analyzing them textually and visually, checking the occurrences of cohesive ties within these cartoons. The study adopts De Beaugrande and Dressler in their book 'Introduction to Text Linguistics' (1981) for textual analysis, and Kress and Van Leeuwen in their book 'Reading Images' (2006) for the visual.The study hypothesizes that cartoons, as any means of communication, utilize linguistic as well as visual elements in order to deliver its messages; and that certain textual relations are used, together with certain visual criteria, can make a given cartoon communicative more than when other relations are used.The data are (6) cartoons selected from different English newspapers, within the years (2006-2009). These cartoons tackle Brexit as a condition for selection. The Study comes up with some conclusions, the hypotheses above are achieved with some other conclusions

The main difficulty of credit risk evaluation is to evaluate borrowers' willingness of repayment, which is a subjective factor depending on the thoughts and ideas of borrowers. Text description is a kind of human behavior which reflects the mental process of writers. The authors identify the characteristics of borrowers from their text descriptions and further use them to evaluate the credit risk of loans. Experimental results show that: (1) textual information is a good choice when traditional financial information is missing. The authors can achieve similar accuracy using only textual information as traditional methods which use financial information and credit information from the third party. (2) Textual information is a good complementary information source to traditional financial information sources. Using textual information can improve the performance of credit risk evaluation system when combined with traditional financial information.

Identifying and managing credit risk is vital for all lending institutions. Historically, credit risk is assessed using financial data from published financial statements. However, research indicates that the ability to detect financial hardship may be improved by textual analysis of firms’ disclosed records. This study aims to establish an association between themes and words from Management Discussion and Analysis (MDA) reports of firms and corporate failures. The study took a sample of 57 Indian listed firms declared bankrupt under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) along with a matched sample of 55 solvent firms (matched by industry and size) for the period of FY2011–2019. The first part of analysis identifies negative words from the published reports and compares them with the negative words of the Loughran-McDonald dictionary. Then a thematic analysis is done to identify the key themes from the MDA reports and the significant themes are validated with their corresponding financial ratios in the third step using a panel logistic regression. Word analysis results show that IBC firms have significantly greater negative tone (2.21 percent) as against 1.30 percent of solvent firms. Thematic analysis results show that manageability, activity and performance are significant themes for predicting financial distress. Financial variables such as ownership pattern, promoters’ shares pledged, return on capital employed, asset utilization are some of the ratios in sync with the key themes. The study recommends that lenders and other stakeholders should look beyond financial statements which may be ‘window dressed’ by firms to qualitative disclosures in annual reports which may forewarn against impending financial distress. Pre-translation text analysis is an integral part of an efficient translation procedure. In fact, it focuses on collecting intra-textual and extra-textual information on the text under translation. Collecting the intra-textual information is mainly based on a thorough analysis of the source text linguistic peculiarities, whereas the extra-textual information focuses basically on the communicative functional properties of both source and target texts. There exist different approaches towards this procedure and the stages of its accomplishment. Nonetheless, it should be noted that they all lead to a broader spectrum of discourse analysis with its intra-textual and extra-textual parameters and give birth to the translation-oriented pragmatic analysis before initiating translation process itself. The article focuses on the interrelation and interaction of all the mentioned types of analysis (pragmatic analysis, discourse analysis, pre-translation analysis) as an essential requirement for a relevant translation.

The present study proposes a discourse-immanent view (following Wodak 2001) of political manifestos, examining them as sites for textually negotiating tensions and paradoxes, rather than focusing on their persuasive aspects. This approach is applied to the analysis of two founding documents of the Israeli religious settlers’ movement, where tensions between religious vision and actual politics have increased over time. Findings indicate that in the first manifesto (1974), discursive resources (temporality, point of view construction and terms of reference) are strategically used to contain tensions and maintain the movement’s dialectical vision of the relations between religion and politics. By contrast, the second manifesto (1980) exhibits simpler textual patterns which forgo this dialectical commitment, reflecting the eroding ability to textually reconcile ideological tensions as challenges to the movement’s vision grow. This is discussed as demonstrating the utility of discourse analysis for historical research in providing micro-evidence for the emergence of ideological change.

This research seeks to reveal the errors displayed by German language teachers and learners. Therefore, the researcher will investigate what types of errors appear in the German language learning process of teachers and learners and what error levels appear in the German language learning process of teachers and learners. The researcher uses error level analysis (James, 2013) divided into 3 main parts, namely substance errors, textual errors, and discourse errors. The results prove that substance errors and textual errors are found in the teacher. The substance errors are coding errors when speaking (mispronunciations) and decoding errors in reading (miscues). While the textual errors are errors in composing spoken text (misspeaking) and errors in composing written text (miswriting). Then, substance errors, textual errors, and discourse errors appear in the learners. In substance errors, there are coding errors in speaking (mispronunciations), coding errors in writing (misspellings), decoding errors in listening (misperceptions) and decoding errors in reading (miscues). In textual errors, errors in understanding spoken text (mishearing), and errors in understanding written text (misreading) were found. In discourse errors, errors in formulating oral discourse (misrepresenting) were found. Of the many errors, both teachers and learners excel in mispronunciations and misspeaking. Both need to hone their knowledge of the target language more deeply.

Because textual scholarship, having no definable Fach, or subject matter, is an exemplary postmodernist antidiscipline, it can serve as a site for testing the epistemological assumptions and protocols of the current debate over the status of evidence and the nature of proof. Since text is “authority” and “original” and yet also “network” and “tissue” and since forensics encompasses both hard physical “facts” and the rhetorical formulation that gives such data interpretive meaning, a textual forensics will codify and test the interaction of the phenomenological world and the hermeneutic analysis of its evidence. With procedural and conceptual links both to scientific empiricism and to rhetorical strategies for persuasion, textual scholarship becomes a vehicle for anatomizing the postmodernist breakdown of the master narratives, including that of evidence and proof.

O corpus de análise compõe-se de uma produção escrita de uma aluna do 5o ano do Ensino Fundamental, obtido a partir do desenvolvimento de atividades trabalhadas em uma sequência didática de três aulas. Para apresentação de tal propósito, dividiremos o artigo em duas partes: na primeira apresentaremos os conceitos de gêneros textuais, como os de Marcuschi (2002); sequências narrativas, como os de Adam (2008), Cabral (2013) e Sparano e colaboradores (2012); sequências descritivas, como os de Marquesi (2004) e sequências didáticas, como os de Dolz, Noverraz e Schneuwly (2004), entre outros; e, na segunda, analisaremos a produção escrita que apresenta algumas dificuldades, por parte da aluna estudada, na composição de sequências textuais e aponta para a necessidade de atividades de retextualização como possibilidades de trabalho para a melhoria da prática de produção escrita e meio de complementar as lacunas observadas nas análises do corpus.Palavras-chave: Gêneros textuais. Effective lesson planning and execution are ensured by deep text interpretation. The New English Curriculum reform currently places greater demands on students’ ability to read at a deep level, which raises the bar for fully evaluating the arrangement and structure of textual content. The focus of modern text linguistics, the theme-rheme theory and thematic progression pattern, play a significant role in interpreting textual composition and internal information structure of a discourse. Therefore, in order to increase the explanatory power in textual analysis, this study tries to apply theme-rheme theory and thematic progression to analyze the textual organization characteristics of expositions in National College Entrance Examination(NCEE) Volume A reading materials. Finally, this study gives the front-line teachers some reference based on the findings in order to improve their text interpretation, reading, and writing instruction, which will ultimately support effective teaching design and implementation.

Abstract: Textual linguistics has been undergoing a continuous redefining of its internal and external boundaries after Halliday & Hasan’s inaugural thesis. It notably concerns the concepts of text and discourse, and has led to the constitution of a new research field: Textual Discourse Analysis (TDA). We will start from two questions which were asked at the origin of this Congress: “What is a text – or the text – in the digital age?” and “Which new methods are available for textual analysis?” We assume that text is neither merely nor principally a linguistic object, but is at the meeting point of various fields and key-concepts: sentence, utterance, document, archive, basis and corpuses, discourse. Answers must be searched in digital philology as well as in the hermeneutic aspects of discourse analysis.
