In this thesis I develop statistical methodology for analyzing discrete data to be applied to stylometry problems, always with the Bayesian approach in mind. The statistical analysis of literary style has long been used to characterize the style of texts and authors, and to help settle authorship attribution problems. Early work in the literature used word length, sentence length, and proportion of nouns, articles, adjectives or adverbs to characterize literary style. I use count data that goes from the frequency of word frequency, to the simultaneous analysis of word length counts and more frequent function words counts. All of them are characteristic features of the style of author and at the same time rather independent of the context in which he writes. Here we intrude a Bayesian Analysis of word frequency counts, that have a reverse J-shaped distribution with extraordinarily long upper tails. It is based on extending Sichel's non-Bayesian methodology for frequency count data using the inverse gaussian Poisson model. The model is checked by exploring the posterior distribution of the Pearson errors and by implementing posterior predictive consistency checks. The posterior distribution of the inverse gaussian mixing density also provides a useful interpretation, because it can be seen as an estimate of the vocabulary distribution of the author, from which measures of richness and of diversity of the author's writing can be obtained. An alternative analysis is proposed based on the inverse gaussian-zero truncated Poisson mixture model, which is obtained by switching the order of the mixing and the truncation stages. An analysis of the heterogeneity of the style of a text is proposed that strikes a compromise between change-point, that analyze sudden changes in style, and cluster analysis, that does not take order into consideration. Here an analysis is proposed that strikes a compromise by incorporating the fact that parts of the text that are close together are more likely to belong to the same author than parts of the text far apart. The approach is illustrated by revisiting the authorship attribution of Tirant lo Blanc. A statistical analysis of the heterogeneity of literary style in a set of texts that simultaneously uses different stylometric characteristics, like word length and the frequency of function words, is proposed. It clusters the rows of all contingency tables simultaneously into groups with homogeneous style based on a finite mixture of sets of multinomial models. That has some advantages over the usual heuristic cluster analysis approaches as it naturally incorporates the text size, the discrete nature of the data, and the dependence between categories. All is illustrated with the analysis of the style in plays by Shakespeare, El Quijote, and Tirant lo Blanc. Finally, authorship attribution and verification problems that are usually treated separately are treated jointly. That is done by assuming an open-set classification framework for attribution problems, contemplating the possibility that neither one of the candidate authors, with training texts known to have been written by them is the author of the disputed texts. Then the verification problem becomes a special case of attribution problems.A formal Bayesian multinomial model for this more general authorship attribution is given and a closed form solution for it is derived. The approach to the verification problem is illustrated by exploring whether a court ruling sentence could have been written by the judge that signs it or not, and the approach to the attribution problem illustrated by exploring whether a court ruling sentence could have been written by the judge that signs it or not, and the approach to the attribution problem is illustrated by revisiting the authority attribution

The explosion of World Wide Web has brought endless amount of information within our reach. In order to take advantage of this phenomenon, text search becomes a major contemporary research challenge. Due to the nature of the Web, assisting users to find desired information is still a challenging task. In this thesis, we investigate semantic anlaysis techniques which can facilitate the search process at semantic level. We also study the problem that short queries are less informative and difficult to convey the user's intention into the search service system. We propose a generalized framework to address these issues. We conduct a case study of movie plot search in which a semantic analyzer seamlessly works with a user's intention detector. Our experimental results show the importance and effectiveness of intention detection and semantic analysis techniques.

Streszczenie:
As its title suggests, this study is divided into two separate but related parts. Each part of the thesis is then sub-divided into sections. Part I is evolutionary in nature, building its argument in a more linear and expository style than those sections which comprise Part II which stand in a more dialogical relation to each other and are self-sufficient in form. The title of the thesis uses the term 'psycho-analysis' as it was first introduced by Freud with reference to a systemic methodology. It should be noted that the 'textual production' to which I refer in the title should not suggest a Marxist-based analysis. Instead, it refers to the activation of the text in conjunction with its encounter with the reading subject. As such, it does not refer to the creation of an author, nor to the material production via institutions in the strict historical sense. It does, however, refer to a material affect of the signifier in its interpretative rendering by emphasizing its bodily interlinking with the imaginary of the reader in a scene which is analogous to that of hysterical symptomatology. Part I is entitled 'Psycho-Analysis' and consists of three sections which explore the beginnings of psychoanalysis, its main theories on hysteria and the relationship between Josef Breuer and Sigmund Freud. The theoretical base of hysteria is considered to be illuminating to analyses of critical procedures such as those employed in literary criticism. Part II is entitled 'Textual Production' and is comprised of six sections of textual readings. These readings are presented as discrete in themselves yet of an interlocking character. This study of psycho-analysis and textual production has attempted to examine the mechanisms of critical encounter in relation to the psychoanalytical text and the literary text. Theories offered by psycho-analysis formulated with reference to hysteria are considered to offer an illuminating parallel to those processes which occur in critical practice.

The goal of this study is to examine the effectiveness of contemplative pedagogy. Forty-four honors students completed a course in contemplative pedagogy at a western university. The focus of the course was empathy and compassion. The students partook in a variety of contemplative practices such as loving-kindness meditation, mindfulness meditation, and breath-focused meditation. Over the 15-week course, the students meditated before and after reading articles on contemplative ideas and wrote journal entries each week. The content of the journal entries was broken into categories by the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software. A variety of themes were analyzed. Self-report data separated the students into three groups; continuing-meditators, new-meditators, and non-meditators. The journal entries showed an increase in personal pronouns, future tense, causation, and religion words over the course of the semester suggesting. There was a decrease in first person singular pronouns, positive and negative emotion words, and insight. This study provides implications of the effectiveness of contemplative pedagogy and offers a basis for more research in the area.

This paper is a case study of the Soma mining disaster that took place on May 13, 2014. The disaster ultimately resulted in the deaths of 301 miners. To better understand how this incident was portrayed in newspaper coverage, a textual analysis of frames was conducted. In order to garner the broadest possible scope regarding the depiction of this disaster, newspapers with varying political and religious affiliations were examined. These frames were analyzed to identify elements of classical propaganda in news organizations regardless of political or religious affiliation.

Coverage from four daily newspapers (Yeni Şafak, Sabah, Cumhuriyet, and Everensel) was analyzed for frames that emphasize nationalism, Islamism, or worker-employer relations. The study found that the most commonly used elements of classical propaganda were: emotional appeals and flag waiving—or the invocation of nationally held symbols to motivate action or thought the audience would not have done on their own volition.

What values, if any, is moral psychology based on with regard to what humans should be like? While the value-free ideal of science requires at least the bracketing of values in regards to the conducting of research and influence on its results, this investigation takes seriously the concerns of leading social psychologists that biases may influence the subdiscipline. Textual analyses of moral psychology's literature involving content analysis of codes and cultural discourse analysis of value themes illuminate values involving moral problems and moral goods that may inherently influence research at various levels. It is proposed that values are impossible to eliminate from moral psychological research and that a simple epistemic/nonepistemic value distinction is inadequate for deciding which values are appropriate. A norm of value disclosure to replace the norm of the value-free ideal is recommended.

Alqrainy, Shihadeh. "A morphological-syntactical analysis approach for Arabic textual tagging". Thesis, De Montfort University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/4819.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging is the process of labeling or classifying each word in written text with its grammatical category or part-of-speech, i.e. noun, verb, preposition, adjective, etc. It is the most common disambiguation process in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). POS tagging systems are often preprocessors in many NLP applications. The Arabic language has a valuable and an important feature, called diacritics, which are marks placed over and below the letters of the word. An Arabic text is partiallyvocalisedl when the diacritical mark is assigned to one or maximum two letters in the word. Diacritics in Arabic texts are extremely important especially at the end of the word. They help determining not only the correct POS tag for each word in the sentence, but also in providing full information regarding the inflectional features, such as tense, number, gender, etc. for the sentence words. They add semantic information to words which helps with resolving ambiguity in the meaning of words. Furthermore, diacritics ascribe grammatical functions to the words, differentiating the word from other words, and determining the syntactic position of the word in the sentence. 1. Vocalisation (also referred as diacritisation or vowelisation). This thesis presents a rule-based Part-of-Speech tagging system called AMT - short for Arabic Morphosyntactic Tagger. The main function of the AMT system is to assign the correct tag to each word in an untagged raw partially-vocalised Arabic corpus, and to produce a POS tagged corpus without using a manually tagged or untagged lexicon (dictionary) for training. Two different techniques were used in this work, the pattem-based technique and the lexical and contextual technique. The rules in the pattem-based technique technique are based on the pattern of the testing word. A novel algorithm, Pattern-Matching Algorithm (PMA), has been designed and introduced in this work. The aim of this algorithm is to match the testing word with its correct pattern in pattern lexicon. The lexical and contextual technique on the other hand is used to assist the pattembased technique technique to assign the correct tag to those words not have a pattern to follow. The rules in the lexical and contextual technique are based on the character(s), the last diacritical mark, the word itself, and the tags of the surrounding words. The importance of utilizing the diacritic feature of the Arabic language to reduce the lexical ambiguity in POS tagging has been addressed. In addition, a new Arabic tag set and a new partially-vocalised Arabic corpus to test AMT have been compiled and presented in this work. The AMT system has achieved an average accuracy of 91 %.

With so many job adverts and candidate profiles available online, the e-recruitment constitutes a rich object of study. All this information is however textual data, which from a computational point of view is unstructured. The large number and heterogeneity of recruitment websites also means that there is a lot of vocabularies and nomenclatures. One of the difficulties when dealing with this type of raw textual data is being able to grasp the concepts contained in it, which is the problem of standardization that is tackled in this thesis. The aim of standardization is to create a unified process providing values in a nomenclature. A nomenclature is by definition a finite set of meaningful concepts, which means that the attributes resulting from standardization are a structured representation of the information. Several questions are however raised: Are the websites' structured data usable for a unified standardization? What structure of nomenclature is the best suited for standardization, and how to leverage it? Is it possible to automatically build such a nomenclature from scratch, or to manage the standardization process without one? To illustrate the various obstacles of standardization, the examples we are going to study include the inference of the skills or the category of a job advert, or the level of training of a candidate profile. One of the challenges of e-recruitment is that the concepts are continuously evolving, which means that the standardization must be up-to-date with job market trends. In light of this, we will propose a set of machine learning models that require minimal supervision and can easily adapt to the evolution of the nomenclatures. The questions raised found partial answers using Case Based Reasoning, semi-supervised Learning-to-Rank, latent variable models, and leveraging the evolving sources of the semantic web and social media. The different models proposed have been tested on real-world data, before being implemented in a industrial environment. The resulting standardization is at the core of SmartSearch, a project which provides a comprehensive analysis of the job market

Streszczenie:
A large number of software projects exist and will continue to be developed that have textual requirements and textual design elements where the design elements should fully satisfy the requirements. Current techniques to assess the satisfaction of requirements by corresponding design elements are largely manual processes that lack formal criteria and standard practices. Software projects that require satisfaction assessment are often very large systems containing several hundred requirements and design elements. Often these projects are within a high assurance project domain, where human lives and millions of dollars of funding are at stake. Manual satisfaction assessment is expensive in terms of hours of human effort and project budget. Automated techniques are not currently applied to satisfaction assessment. This dissertation addresses the problem of automated satisfaction assessment for English, textual documents and the generation of candidate satisfaction assessments that can then be verified by a human analyst with far less effort and time expenditure than is required to produce a manual satisfaction assessment. Validation results to date show that automated satisfaction methods produce candidate satisfaction assessments sufficient to greatly reduce the effort required to assess the satisfaction of textual requirements by textual design elements.

Dickinson, Mary J. "What can a CAQDAS analysis reveal about university textual identity?" Thesis, University of Surrey, 2002. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/842756/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis argues that changes in the 'idea' of the university can be identified through an analysis of the textual identities of institutions utilising Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS). The historical review at the beginning of the work identifies four key, perennial aspects of university identity and function: (i) transmitting knowledge and producing cultured students; (ii) research; (iii) training for employment; and (iv) a wider duty to society. The thesis rests upon the premise that the relative prominence of each of these four aspects in university publications gives a university a certain textual identity at a given time. The thesis further suggests that certain specific forces - State intervention, economic pressures, industry, and competition - affect the priority given to these aspects. The University of Surrey is examined as a case study and changes in the relative prominence of these aspects are observed in the textual presentation of this institution over time. These findings, when compared with an analysis of the public documents of a cross-sector sample of other institutions, revealed different textual identities and this has implications regarding university mission and performance. The thesis shows that external factors do have an influence upon textual identity. CAQDAS was also able to reveal that university textual identity is not monolithic and varies over time and depending on the intended audience. The remit of the study extends to January 2002, and is therefore timely in light of the 2001 review of the structure and funding of higher education (Newby, 2001), particularly because a key aspect of the Newby review is the increasingly explicit linking of funding to mission. This analysis contributes to debates in higher education concerning institutional identity, the usefulness of existing institutional typologies, mission, and possible futures for the sector. The study also makes a methodological contribution to educational research in its innovative employment of the CAQDAS tool.

Streszczenie:
Many discourses contribute to the definition of 'the Aborigine' including anthropology, sociology, media, health, statistics, etc. This dissertation explores the way the bureaucratic discourse has constructed the 'Aborigine' rendering them bureaucratically intelligible, and facilitating their control. A study of three Department of Native Affairs files of the 1940's, reveals a 'documentary reality' which is read as a 'situational reality'. Informed by the values, morality and mores of the Judaeo/Christian protestant ethic, the bureaucracy of the 1940's constructed the Aborigine to reflect these norms. Instances of this are highlighted in the files studied. To reveal the white construction of Aboriginality, theories of 'documentary reality' and discourse analysis are applied to the texts, enabling a deconstruction and exposure of the manner in which this construction was maintained. Also demonstrated is the confining and regulating nature of the bureaucracy. Whilst these texts were authored some forty five years ago, they bear an uncanny resemblance to present day events. Bureaucratic intervention in negotiations for mining rights continues to indicate a "big brother" attitude founded on racist values. Suggestions are made as to how the bureaucratic/Aboriginal dichotomy may be remedied.

Streszczenie:
This thesis proposes to examine Voltaire as 'literary' historian and to compare the theory and practice of his histories with those of contemporary historiographers and historians. The works selected for focus are Voltaire's Histoire de Charles XII (1730) and Le Siècle de Louis XIV (1751). Section I, 'History Voices', centres on the enunciated theory and the actual practice of contemporary history. The prefatory writing of a selection of historians (from among Voltaire's sources) is analysed to identify a prefatory programme. This is subsequently compared to the contemporary practice of writing history and it reveals an intriguing degree of divergence concerning attitudes towards authority, objectivity and truth. Similar analysis is applied to Voltaire's theoretical writing on historiography, revealing a 'historian's voice'. While Voltaire and his contemporaries all discuss questions of the historical author, subject, style, truth, aims and reader, actual contemporary history (excluding Voltaire) discloses a monotonal texture, uniquely concerned with the chosen subject of history. Section II, 'Story Voices', focuses on Voltaire's use of different textual levels in his composition of the story of his histories, that is, the telling, evaluation and presentation of historical and non-historical material within history. Analysis is made of structure, style, use of anecdotes, voices and echoes to investigate the development of a polytonal history which is simultaneously historical and contemporary, analytical and polemical, general and personal. In comparing Voltaire's histories to contemporary histories and to his own enunciated theories of historiography, textual analysis also reveals ambiguities in fact and fiction, in the historical and the storical, in historiography and narrative. A salient feature of the literariness of Voltaire's histories is the presence of duality, ironic tone and polytonal voices, all of which are audible beneath and within the official history. This literariness underlies and comprises the very vitality of Voltaire's history.

Streszczenie:
Our study is a collaborative dissertation paper that combines two differentdiscourse analyses, textual and visual, based on a common theoretical background. The introduction guides the reader through the content of the study, at the same timeoffering a brief context of research. The aim of the paper is to address a gap that weidentified in the study of mindfulness, namely a critical approach, from a media andcommunication perspective, of how this concept is represented in social media. Eventhough our research questions are developed separately in the analyses conductedindependently, they can be reduced to three core questions: ‘How is the meaning ofmindfulness constructed on Twitter?’, ‘Are there any power relations in theconstruction of discourse and if they exist, how do they shape the discourse?’, ‘Howdoes the reproduction and circulation of discourse shape its meaning throughintertextuality?’For answering these questions existing research from psychology, sociology and business has been reviewed, with the mention that no relevantmedia and/or communication studies on mindfulness have been found. Therefore, our attempt to open a discussion in the field required a theoreticalframe of analysis. For that we chose Michel Foucault’s discourse theory, addingobservations on relations of power, and Stuart Hall’s theories of representation. The methodologies used for the two analyses are Fairclough’s and Rose’sapproaches of applied discourse analysis. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) andVisual Discourse Analysis (VDA) are two detailed disseminations of qualitativedata, conducted separately. Results show that there is a mainstream discoursethat portrays mindfulness as a positive practice. This type of discourse might beinvested with power, however our conclusions in this sense are restrained by thelimitations of access to Twitter data. High intertextuality and low reliability onthe scientific discourse further suggested in our case that the understandings ofmindfulness are subject to change due to an advanced grade of interpretabilityamong Twitter users.

Supporting students to develop a strong foundation for thorough understanding, and assisting educators in teaching effectively, both require the utilization of meaningful feedback. The contributions presented in this thesis aimed to provide instantaneous, and individualised feedback for both students and educators through the use of text analysis. The methodologies and models described are all automated, therefore once implemented can provide feedback routinely and recurrently. These solutions facilitate both learning and teaching for students and educators, respectively, helping to close the quality assurance loop.

Based on the theoretical presuppositions of the functionalist paradigm, a research was done on the syntactic-semantic and textual-discursive aspects of the explicative relative sentence in texts written in contemporary Portuguese. These texts are part of the technical, journalistic, novelistic and dramatic literatures of the Contemporary Written Language Database in Brazil, which are stored in the Lexicographical Studying Center of the Science and Letters College, UNESP from Araraquara in SÃo Paulo â Brazil. In this study, it was developed a discussion related to the explicative relative sentence properties which are presented by the traditional and descriptive grammars of the Portuguese language, as well as by some functionalist orientation researches, in order to make a comparison with some structures, after analyzing 503 occurrences. At first, these structures were considered too similar: the non-restrictive appositives and the adverbial ones. The obtained results in this research confirm the hypothesis that the explicative relative sentences are similar to the appositive structures, above all considering the characteristics of the textual-discursive plan; but they move away from the prototypical representation of the apposition by the syntactic-semantics asymmetry which is observed in the relative structure. The analyzed data also confirm the hypothesis that the explicative relative sentence is similar to the adverbial structures while working as an alternative articulation manifestation of circumstantial contents (by means of inferred relational proposals of cause, consequence and concession); but, in contrast with them, it can be directly used for serving to the purpose of conducting some information to the argumentative-attitudinal arrangement of the identity of the discursive referents. From the obtained results of this research, it was discussed a proposal of a productive and reflexive approach of the relative sentence in the grammar teaching process at schools. It is important to mention that this research will certainly contribute to the descriptive and linguistic analysis of the contemporary Portuguese language, as well as to the teaching process, which is supposed to try to get the extension of the textual-discursive studentsâ competence by turning the linguistic analysis and the reading-comprehension and writing lessons into more consistent and coherent classes in relation to the effective use of the language.

User Generated Content (UGC) is the name given to content created spontaneously by ordinary individuals, without connections to the media. This type of content carries valuable information and can be exploited by several areas of knowledge. Much of the UGC is provided in the form of texts product reviews, comments on forums about movies, and discussions on social networks are examples. However, the language used in UGC texts differs, in many ways, from the cultured norm of the language, making it difficult for NLP techniques to handle them. UGC language is strongly linked to the language used in daily life, containing a large amount of noise. Spelling mistakes, abbreviations, slang, absence or misuse of punctuation and capitalization are some noises that make it difficult to process these texts. Several works report considerable loss of performance when testing NLP state-of-the-art tools in UGC texts. Textual Normalization is the process of turning noisy words into words considered correct and can be used to improve the quality of UGC texts. This work reports the development of methods and systems that aim to (a) identify noisy words in UGC, (b) find candidate words for substitution, and (c) rank candidates for normalization. For the identification of noisy words, lexical-based methods and machine learning ones using deep neural networks were proposed. The automatic identification presented results comparable to the use of lexicons, proving that this process can be done with low dependence of resources. For the generation and ranking of candidates, techniques based on lexical similarity and word embeddings were investigated. It was concluded that the use of embeddings is highly suitable for normalization, having achieved the best results. All proposed methods were evaluated based on a UGC corpus annotated throughout the project, containing texts from different sources: discussion forums, product reviews and tweets. A system, Enelvo, combining all methods was implemented and compared to another existing normalizing system, UGCNormal. The results obtained by the Enelvo system were considerably higher, with a correction rate between 67 % and 97 % for different types of noise, with less dependence on resources and greater flexibility in normalization.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study attempts to explore aspects of the textual representation of Magadien Wentzel, the main character of The Number, a work of literary journalism by Jonny Steinberg. It sets out to respond to the following two central research questions: Firstly, what narrative decisions does Jonny Steinberg make in the text of The Number to convey aspects of the reality he experienced in relation to his main character, Magadien Wentzel; and secondly, what effect do these decisions have on the reader? As literary journalism is a genre with fluid boundaries and therefore various definitions, the thesis first presents the challenge of definition and lays out a broad history of the genre in its attempt to situate The Number as a work of social documentary and of literary journalism in South Africa. Taking realism as its theoretical point of departure, this study aligns itself with the view that there exists an independent, extra-textual real-world and that knowledge of this real-world can be produced and shared. In doing so, realism presents itself as a literary form associated with art that cannot turn away from harsh aspects of human existence – a characteristic mirrored by Steinberg’s (and thus his character’s) major themes. By means of a textual analysis which seeks to interpret aspects of Steinberg’s narrative decisions in his text, this study uses tools of literary realism, namely the empirical effect and the character effect, in its exploration. This research, conducted within the qualitative research paradigm, is informed in particular by the assumption that there exists an implicit communicative contract between author and reader which leads to narrative trust, seen as an indispensable quality to the non-fictional reading experience. In the case of Steinberg and The Number, this study finds that the writer’s representation of a particular reality relies to an important degree on the level of trust he is able to inspire in a reader. This is pertinent because, being factual, non-fiction demands that a reader not only imagine a world other than their own, but that they believe it too. One of the ways in which Steinberg enables a reader to trust his representation of his particular reality is by overtly placing his literary and authorial concerns alongside his reportage of Magadien Wentzel, the main character of The Number. This distinctive narrative approach results in a modification of the reader’s traditional contract with the writer, forged by the text between them, to one in which the text unites the reader with both Steinberg as narrator and Magadien Wentzel as character.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how local and foreign newspapers used the war journalism and peace journalism frames when covering the Sri Lankan civil war, and to uncover subframes specific to the conflict. The first part of the thesis provides an in- depth literature review that addresses the history of the conflict and media freedom in Sri Lanka. The newspaper articles for the textual analysis were selected from mainstream Sri Lankan and U.S newspapers: the Daily News (a state sponsored newspaper) and Daily Mirror from Sri Lanka, and the New York Times and Washington Post from the U.S. A total of 185 articles were analyzed and categorized into war journalism and peace journalism. Next, subframes specific to the Sri Lankan conflict were identified. The overall coverage is dominated by the peace journalism frame, and the strongest war journalism frame is visible in local newspaper articles. Furthermore, two subframes specific to the Sri Lanka conflict were identified: war justification subframe and humanitarian crisis subframe. In conclusion, the study reveals that in the selected newspapers, the peace journalism frame dominated the coverage of the Sri Lankan civil war. All in all, while adding to the growing scholarship of media framing in international conflicts, the study will benefit newspaper editors and decision-makers by providing textual analysis of content produced from the coverage of war and conflict during a dangerous time period for both journalists and the victims of war.

Streszczenie:
Fallists belong to a constellation of radical student activist movements that pledge to disturb and reimagine South African society. Rather than restricting themselves to coordinated forms of collective action, Fallists’ advance their “revolution-as-becoming” within a context of everyday resistance (Haynes & Prakash, 1991; Molefe, 2015). In this dissertation, I propose that Fallists form an “emerging networked counterpublic” made up of individual activists that enact everyday forms of resistance on Twitter (Jackson & Foucault Welles, 2016:399). This dissertation explores the use of Twitter by a microblogger who has emerged organically as a “crowdsourced elite” among Fallists (Papacharissi & de Fatima Oliveira, 2012). I contend that this microblogger exemplifies the repertoires of communication and resistance that pervade within Fallist networks on Twitter (Jackson & Foucault Welles, 2016). The microblogger is identified through methods of observation and social network analysis (SNA). “#whitetip,” a Twitter hashtag network that exemplifies Fallist communication and resistance, informs the interpretive content analysis that follows. This analysis is conducted on the tweets that the microblogger broadcast between 1 April and 30 September 2016. Tweets are categorised according to “evaluative frames” that emerged inductively during the course of analysis. I find that “resentment,” “pride and care,” and “play” made up the vast majority of evaluative frames. The microblogger employs the platform in a manner that disturbs dominant understandings of public sphere communication: the microblogger’s tweets are evaluative rather than deliberative, and assert a marginal, embodied subjectivity (Papacharissi, 2014; Warner, 2002).

Modern media patterns show feminist narratives being used to market different consumer products in the name of female empowerment and emancipation. Typically, the industries targeted have historically been dominated by male perspectives and aim to perpetuate a capitalist consumer culture. The newly legalized cannabis industry in North America, has seen an increase in female participation both in production and consumption. This thesis takes Broccoli, an all-female produced magazine about cannabis, as a case to textually analyze how feminist narratives are used to appeal to their majority female and non-binary audience to a cannabis consumer lifestyle. In the analysis I have found that the magazine is critical to postfeminist notions of consumer culture, while simultaneously working within them in order to act as pioneers, holding a female-oriented space within the industry.

Streszczenie:
Social networks are enormous sources of human-generated content. Users continuously create information, useful but hard to detect, extract, and categorize. Language Models (LMs) have always been among the most useful and used approaches to process textual data. Firstly designed as simple unigram models, they improved through the years until the recent release of BERT, a pre-trained Transformer-based model reaching state-of-the-art performances in many heterogeneous benchmark tasks, such as text classification and tagging. In this thesis, I apply LMs to textual content publicly shared on social media. I selected Twitter as the principal source of data for the performed experiments since its users mainly share short and noisy texts. My goal is to build models that generate meaningful representations of users encoding their syntactic and semantic features. Once appropriate embeddings are defined, I compute similarities between users to perform higher-level analyses. Tested tasks include the extraction of emerging knowledge, represented by users similar to a given set of well-known accounts, controversy detection, obtaining controversy scores for topics discussed online, community detection and characterization, clustering similar users and detecting outliers, and stance classification of users and tweets (e.g., political inclination, COVID-19 vaccines position). The obtained results suggest that publicly available data contains delicate information about users, and Language Models can now extract it, threatening users' privacy.

This research aims at investigating the rhetoric-argumentative organization of justification sections of thesis projects on Linguistics, qualified by students of two graduate programs in Fortaleza. The rhetoric organization of the justification sections, were analyzed according to Swalesâ genre analysis conception (1990, 1992, 1998). Adamâs concept of text sequence (1992) was the basis for the description of the argumentative structure of this type of genre. First, all the exemplars in the corpus were segmented into rhetoric units and an information distribution pattern was defined. Next, the same corpus was segmented into textual sequences and, finally, a relationship between the rhetoric units and the textual sequences identified was established. Through this investigation it was noticed that the justification section have a rhetoric organization relatively homogeneous and the dominant textual sequence in these texts is always argumentative, although several other sequences occur within the argumentative and play important roles in the realization of some rhetoric units which are prototypical of the generic piece justification section of thesis projects.

Streszczenie:
The thesis is written against a fairly recent background of dispute and acrimony centring on the analysis and interpretation of secular texts using either the long-established, literary-critical approach, or the newer, stylistics approach based on modern linguistics. Linguistic stylistics seeks to relate the observations of literary criticism rigorously to the linguistic infra-structure. The thesis sets out to test a form of stylistics based on systemic linguistics, a linguistics originating with J.R. Firth and developed especially by M.A.K. Halliday. It is ideally suited to the interpretation of all kinds of texts, because it is based on a semanticized grammar, i.e. it relates grammar to meaning and to social context and use. The thesis explores how the language of a text constructs meaning, and stylistics is offered as a methodology to evaluate the detailed data of linguistic analysis and to articulate the relationship between the given of a text and the intuitions of the reader. It does not eschew polysemy, which is of the very nature of texts, especially literary ones, and a major constituent in the pleasure of reading, but explores the limits set by the language to interpretation. I have applied it to a broad range of excerpts from Biblical Hebrew writings covering narrative, conversation, persuasion and poetry. Stylistics is not meant to replace or subordinate other approaches, but is a preliminary and complementary method, demanding of the interpreter a serious regard for language.

The extant academic literature considers enterprise risk management (ERM) to be the fundamental paradigm for managing the portfolio of risks confronting organizations. However, there is debate as to whether ERM actually enhances stakeholder value. This study investigates whether ERM is associated with increased earnings predictability and a lower risk of firm failure, two theoretical predications regarding ERMâ s impact on stakeholder value. My research utilizes the Security and Exchange Commissionâ s (SEC) enhanced proxy statement disclosures as of February 28th, 2010 to measure ERM performance. Additionally, in order to quantify the operational construct, textual analysis is performed to develop a measure of ERM performance to be used in econometric analyses. The analyses presented in this paper investigate whether key predicted benefits of ERM are observable. Results support the proposition that ERM is associated with increased earnings predictability. Specifically, earnings and accruals are found to be more persistent for firms with better ERM performance. Additionally, analystsâ earnings forecasts are more accurate in the presence of enhanced ERM performance. Results are inconclusive with regards to ERMâ s ability to influence the risk of firm failure during this studyâ s sample period (i.e., 2007-2009). One explanation for this departure, the economic volatility during the financial crisis of 2008-2009, may make it difficult to empirically detect the relationship between ERM performance and the risk of firm failure.

Approximately three hundred more substantive revisions to the text were made before James published it in the New York Edition in 1908. These revisions, as my thesis shows, neither increase nor decrease the existing ambiguity of the story, but polarize it between a casual reading and a close one, such that the former renders the tale as a ghost story, and the latter as a story about a seriously disturbed governess. My contention is that James revised the tale not because his own interpretation of it changed, but because his conception of the best way to tell the story changed. James wished to tell a tale of evil, and his revisions enable him to tell two equally evil tales in the same breath. Over eighty percent of James' revisions for the New York Edition fall into one or the other of two categories of equal size: those that increase the governess' credibility, and those that increase her psychosis. Each category occupies a chapter, within which the revisions are grouped and tabulated according to the specific functions which they serve—with appropriate explanatory commentary, of course. Chapter I examines the intensification of the governess' disturbed state of mind; Chapter II addresses itself to the methods James used to give his narrator a tone of authority. None of James' revisions to The Turn of the Screw could be called extensive; most involve only the change, or the addition, or the transposition, of a single word. Yet, in aggregate they show, more clearly than anything could, what James' own interpretation of the tale was. Moreover, they point readers to a standard of close reading for a James text. And finally, they show us the powerful effect on a story of a few hundred tiny but subtle substantive revisions.

Streszczenie:
In this research I analyse how mental health problems are perceived in two primary Islamic texts: the Qur?an (the holy book for Muslims and the Hadith (the sayings and traditions of Prophet Muhammad). I then integrate this analysis with the perceptions of a cohort of Jordanian Muslims about their mental health problems and treatment. Two important theoretical frameworks underpin this research, namely the post-colonial theorizing of scholars such as Edward Said, Franz Fanon, and Homi Bhabha, and the Explanatory Model of Arthur Kleinman. Research on the assessment and treatment of mental illness in Islamic and Arabic culture is limited. What literature does exist, suggests that in spite of the increase in research on cultural issues related to mental health, there is a strong need for further research to explore the nexus between culture, religion and mental health diagnosis and treatment in non-western cultures, in order to advance cultural sensitivity amongst mental health professions. This research fills this lacuna in mental health scholarship about the mental health awareness and experiences of Muslims. All of the interviews were conducted at the Mental Health Centre in Jordan, where twenty male and female participants were selected and then interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule. The textual analysis commenced while I was in Jordan but was completed on my return to Australia. The data were analysed using both NVivo software and manual coding. The results of this analysis are organized around the two main themes that emerged those of `Causation ’ and `Help-seeking ’. Sub-themes to each of these primary themes provide a comprehensive picture of the understanding and behavior of Muslim people accessing assistance from a mental health clinic, and contribute to understanding of mental health issues related to Islam and to Muslims living in Jordan. The research identifies that religion and religious belief are absolutely central to the way that this cohort of Muslim participants interpret the cause and development of their mental health problems and, further, it posits that this is due in part to the explanations of causation and coping contained in primary Muslim texts.

Streszczenie:
This Thesis deals with the cultural encounter between Islam and Javanese culture as represented by the slametan ritual. The major purposes of this thesis are threefold; (1) to give a brief account of the historical backdrop of the encounter between Islam and the Javanese tradition; (2) to discuss the ongoing dispute among scholars over whether the slametan is animistic, syncretistic or Islamic; and (3) to provide a new perspective on the slametan ritual based upon textual (religious) and contextual (socio-cultural) analysis.
The hypothesis underlying this work is that the slametan is a prototype of syncretistic ritual, the representative of Islamic elements---as its core---on the one hand, and local traditions---as its periphery---on the other. This work will argue against the theory of the slametan developed both by Geertz and Woodward. The first scholar sees the slametan from a socio-cultural perspective only, while the latter views it on an Islamic theological basis. The current writer argues that one should employ a holistic perspective to see the slametan comprehensively; both from "inside" (religious perspective) and "outside" (cultural perspective).

Streszczenie:
This study examined the media portrayals of Roma in the United States by taking a closer look at “Gypsy crime” articles in a purposive sample of newspaper articles. These newspaper articles give details of “confidence” crimes and name the alleged perpetrators as Roma or members of the ethnic minority group commonly known as Gypsies. A textual analysis was conducted of 23 articles appearing in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel from August 16, 2011 to February 8, 2013 covering fraud charges against several members of the Marks family. This primary evaluation narrowed the initial sample to nine articles that contained references to Roma, Romani, or Gypsy. Further analysis of these nine articles revealed four major categories of findings regarding the representation of the ethnic minority. The categories included: 1) the pairing of the preferred term, Roma with the pejorative term, Gypsy; 2) reinforcement of stereotypes; 3) portrayal of the ethnic group as foreign others; and 4) Roma portrayed as a threat to the dominant culture and its members. The theoretical bases for the study included Social Stigma Theory (Goffman, 1963) and Orientalism (Said, 1978) both of which offer a critical lens through which to examine the portrayals of this ethnic minority.
