Streszczenie:
In-Between Textiles is a decentred study of how textiles shaped, disrupted, and transformed subjectivities in the age of the first globalisation. The volume presents a radically cross-disciplinary approach that brings together world-leading anthropologists, archaeologists, art historians, conservators, curators, historians, scientists, and weavers to reflect on the power of textiles to reshape increasingly contested identities on a global scale between 1400 and 1800. Contributors posit the concept of “in-between textiles,” building upon Homi Bhabha’s notion of in-betweenness as the actual material ground of the negotiation of cultural practices and meanings; a site identified as the battleground over strategies of selfhood and the production of identity signs troubled by colonialism and consumerism across the world. In-Between Textiles establishes cutting-edge conversations between textile studies, critical cultural theory, and material culture studies to examine how textiles created and challenged experiences of subjectivity, relatedness, and dis/location that transformed social fabrics around the globe.

Streszczenie:
Textiles and Fashion explores the integration of textile design with fashion, showing the many ways designers use fibre, fabric construction and surface treatments within a garment and on the body. It begins with a brief history of textiles in fashion, showing the links with technical innovation and social developments. You’ll then briefly learn about the processes of textile design, including ethical and environmental considerations, as well as fibre production, dyeing and finishing techniques, before moving on to making the most of different surface treatments and the ways in which colour and trend influence fashion and textiles. This 3rd edition includes updated coverage of emerging technologies, including smart textiles and 3D printing, and interviews with fashion designers to offer insight into how they use textiles in their work. Overall, this is the ideal introduction to using textiles within a fashion context.

Streszczenie:
The imagined worlds of the cinematic mise-en-scène are rich with textiles: fabrics drape over sets, serve as props, and develop mood and character as dress and décor. A much-needed examination of the cultural and emotional impact of textiles as mediated through cinematic technology, Textiles on Film broadens our understanding of the dynamic relationship between fabric and film. Drawing on scholarship across multiple disciplines and exploring a wide range of films—from lesser-known avant-garde films to big-budget Hollywood productions—this book will inspire scholars and students of film, fashion, and textiles. Close readings of on-screen textiles redirect meaning to that which is often overlooked, including depictions of gender expression, behind-the-scenes labor, and architectural and bodily ornamentation. Attentive to the social nuances of fabrics from polyester to velvet, and to the physical qualities of the textiles themselves, Becky Peterson unearths new possibilities for reading media and textile cultures.
