The technology for storing thermal energy as sensible heat, latent heat, or thermochemical energy has greatly evolved in recent years, and it is expected to grow up to about 10.1 billion US dollars by 2027. A thermal energy storage (TES) system can significantly improve industrial energy efficiency and eliminate the need for additional energy supply in commercial and residential applications. This study is a first-of-its-kind specific review of the current projected performance and costs of thermal energy storage. This paper presents an overview of the main typologies of sensible heat (SH-TES), latent heat (LH-TES), and thermochemical energy (TCS) as well as their application in European countries. With regard to future challenges, the installation of TES systems in buildings is being implemented at a rate of 5%; cogeneration application with TES is attested to 10.2%; TES installation in the industry sector accounts for 5% of the final energy consumption. From the market perspective, the share of TES is expected to be dominated by SH-TES technologies due to their residential and industrial applications. With regard to the cost, the SH-TES system is typically more affordable than the LH-TES system or the TCS system because it consists of a simple tank containing the medium and the charging/discharging equipment.

Thermal energy storage (TES) looks to be a promising technology for recovering waste heat or other intermittent heat sources, especially if it is coupled with the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system. This system may use a variety of heat storage materials, including solids, liquids, and phase change materials (PCM). This article discusses the use of PCM as a thermal energy storage material in TES systems coupled with ORC systems. Other TES configurations may be used in ORC; however, in this article, the TES is solely used in heat exchangers, i.e., evaporator and liquid heater. The goal of this research is to establish a dimensionless storage mass parameter for sizing TES-evaporator (TES-EVA) or TES-liquid heater (TES-LH) devices for ORCs. Furthermore, the model of this system was created in the MATLAB environment using the chosen hydrocarbons as ORC working fluids. The obtained modelling results provide a novel point of view that scientists and engineers may employ while developing the TES-EVA or TES-LH utilizing PCM for ORC.

Background:District Energy (DE) is a technology capable of using renewable energy (e.g., solar thermal systems) and waste heat as energy sources efficiently. DE technology nonetheless has potential for improvement. Thermal Energy Storage (TES) can enhance DE performance significantly.Objective:An exergy analysis of a DE system which includes a solar thermal energy system and TES is performed, so as to improve understanding of its performance.Method:A case study based on the Friedrichshafen DE system in Germany is used to assess thermodynamically the role of solar energy and TES in a DE system. The system performance is separated into three modes: (1) fossil fuel is the only source of energy, (2) a discharging TES and fossil fuel provide heat for the DE system, and (3) solar energy and fossil fuels are the energy supplies. Exergy analyses are conducted for each performance mode and the overall DE system.Results:The results quantify the benefits of incorporating solar energy and TES on the performance of the Friedrichshafen DE system, and demonstrate that the overall exergy efficiency of the DE system increases from 23% to 27% with assistance of solar thermal collectors and TES, while the total energy efficiency increases from 83% to 87%.Conclusion:An increase of exergy efficiency is observed when TES is added to a DE system, due to a reduction in solar thermal energy loss by the TES, which allows more solar energy to be converted to useful energy to satisfy the DE system thermal energy demand.

The teacher education management system is crucial to the operation of the teacher education system (TES). It is the core institutional system of the TES, which stipulates the management authority and functional scope of the relevant departments of the TES. After the new pluralistic and open TES is formed, the original management system must be adjusted accordingly. In this context, this article integrates public mental health (PMH) into the diversified and open management system of TES and then uses a neural network to evaluate and complete the following tasks: (1) this article introduces the development status of diversified and open TES management systems at home and abroad and the importance of public psychology courses to teacher education. (2) The framework of TES integrating PMH is proposed, and then the principles of BPNN and gray wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm are introduced, and the IGWO-BPNN model is constructed accordingly. (3) The convergence and fitness of the IGWO-BP model and the GWO-BP model are compared through experiments, which proves the superiority of the performance of the IGWO-BP model. The optimal model is constructed by selecting parameters, and then the output of the model is compared with the expert evaluation results, and the error is small. It is proved that the model has superior performance in evaluating the professional quality of teacher education. (4) This article selects three professional quality evaluation indicators of teacher education to compare the changes before and after the integration of PMH. The results show that the proposed diversified and open management system of TES integrating PMH can effectively improve the professional quality of teachers in all aspects.

Thermostable exoshells (tES) are engineered proteinaceous nanoparticles used for the rapid encapsulation of therapeutic proteins/enzymes, whereby the nanoplatform protects the payload from proteases and other denaturants. Given the significance of oral delivery as the preferred model for drug administration, we structurally improved the stability of tES through multiple inter-subunit disulfide linkages that were initially absent in the parent molecule. The disulfide-linked tES, as compared to tES, significantly stabilized the activity of encapsulated horseradish peroxidase (HRP) at acidic pH and against the primary human digestive enzymes, pepsin, and trypsin. Furthermore, the disulfide-linked tES (DS-tES) exhibited significant intestinal permeability as evaluated using Caco2 cells. In vivo bioluminescence assay showed that encapsulated Renilla luciferase (rluc) was ~3 times more stable in mice compared to the free enzyme. DS-tES collected mice feces had ~100 times more active enzyme in comparison to the control (free enzyme) after 24 h of oral administration, demonstrating strong intestinal stability. Taken together, the in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate the potential of DS-tES for intraluminal and systemic oral drug delivery applications.

This paper investigates the impacts of dispatchability of Parabolic Trough Concentrated Solar Power (PT-CSP) systems over PV power plants in Palestinian territories. Jericho governorate was taken as a case study. All conditions required for implementing PV and PT-CSP systems are verified. The capacity of each investigated system is 1 MW, and both systems are investigated in terms of technical, economic, and environmental aspects. The parametric analysis is used to identify the most feasible option of each renewable energy system by varying the cost of each option candidate and introducing thermal energy storage (TES) to the technology of PT-CSP systems with different capacities. A software based on the MATLAB environment is programmed to estimate the energy produced from each system with the important technical, financial, and environmental indicators. It is found that the alternative of installing a 1 MW PV system is the installation of 1 MWe PT-CSP systems with 14.5 h or 18.5 h TES. Introducing TES improves the dispatchability of the system and the capacity factor which consequently justifies the PT-CSP system investment. Increasing the degree of dispatchability improves the capacity factor of the PT-CSP system from 21% at 0 h TES to 57% at 18.5 h TES (24 h operation). The capacity factor of the PV system is 18.7% which is mostly similar to PT-CSP with zero dispatchability (0 h TES). The study considers the environmental benefits by estimating the amount of avoided CO2 emissions, and it was found that increasing the capacity factor augments the environmental benefits.

Thermal energy systems (TES) contribute to the on-going process that leads to higher integration among different energy systems, with the aim of reaching a cleaner, more flexible and sustainable use of the energy resources. This paper reviews the current literature that refers to the development and exploitation of TES-based solutions in systems connected to the electrical grid. These solutions facilitate the energy system integration to get additional flexibility for energy management, enable better use of variable renewable energy sources (RES), and contribute to the modernisation of the energy system infrastructures, the enhancement of the grid operation practices that include energy shifting, and the provision of cost-effective grid services. This paper offers a complementary view with respect to other reviews that deal with energy storage technologies, materials for TES applications, TES for buildings, and contributions of electrical energy storage for grid applications. The main aspects addressed are the characteristics, parameters and models of the TES systems, the deployment of TES in systems with variable RES, microgrids, and multi-energy networks, and the emerging trends for TES applications.

Thermal energy storage (TES) became one of the main research topics in modern power engineering. The design of TES devices and systems depend on their application. Different thermal energy storage materials (e.g., solids, liquids, or phase change materials) can be applied in TES devices. The selection of the thermal energy storage material depends mainly on the thermal power and operating temperature range of the TES device. These devices and systems are applied in different energy conversion systems, including solar power plants or combined heat and power (CHP) stations. The application of TES devices is also considered in the case of other industries, such as metallurgy. The possible application of TES devices is particularly promising in the case of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems. These systems are often utilizing floating heat sources such as solar energy, waste heat, etc. TES device can be therefore applied as the evaporator of the ORC system in order to stabilize these fluctuations. In this paper, the possible thermal energy storage materials used in TES devices applied in ORCs are discussed. Moreover, the modelling results are reported related to assessment parameters which can be applied to size the TES device for ORC system utilizing different low-boiling working fluids. The thermal properties of working fluids are taken from CoolProp. The function of heat capacity of different TES materials is also provided and the calculation is computed by employing MATLAB. The result shows that based on the simulation, the gradient of the natural characteristic of TES with working fluids (ζ(Tb)) tends to decrease. The presented result in this paper gives a new point of view which can be used by scientists and engineers during the design and implementation of TES evaporators dedicated to ORC power systems.

With increasing awareness of environmental issues and worldwide requirements for sustainable development, renewable energy technologies with lower environmental impact, especially those having abundant resources like wind and solar energy, attract more attention. Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) is one of the most promising solar energy technologies. Indeed, thermal energy storage (TES) units could be integrated into CSP plants, enhancing their flexibility and capacity factor. However, tower based CSP plants still remain cost intensive. This study evaluates the performance of a 55MWe combined-cycle CSP plant with rock-bed TES located in Sevilla, Spain. Sensitivity analysis has been performed to assess the influence of critical parameters. Furthermore, in order to decrease the costs with increasing efficiency, improved CSP plant schemes have been proposed. In the study, EES, SAM and TRNSYS are used to design and simulate the model from technological perspective, then the capital and operational costs are calculated in MATLAB. For one-year simulation of the designed case, the performance of the plant is determined by the trade-off among several conflicting factors. The study focuses on three key indicators to measure the performance- levelized costs of electricity (LCoE), capital expenditure (CAPEX) and efficiency factor (UF). As long as CAPEX is within the acceptable range, LCoE would be the most concerned one-as low as possible, then followed by UF. Compared to conventional CCGT plant, the proposed combined-cycle tower-based CSP plant, with efficiency of 0.49 and LCoE of 196USD/MWe, enables efficiency improvements, while both CAPEX and LCoE are higher. On the other hand, it has to be noticed that CCGT relies on fuel (natural gas) price, which means higher risks and operational expenditure (OPEX). A sensitivity study is involved varying gas turbine expansion ratio (to vary its outlet temperature and therefore supply power for the bottoming Rankine cycle), size of TES and solar multiple (SM). It can be found that same LCoE and UF could be achieved with lower CAPEX by setting appropriate parameters. The study also introduces two improved CSP plant schemes with sensitivity study. To some extent, the LCoE decreases due to increasing power output and the efficiency of the system simultaneously increases.

Studien fokuserar på tre nyckelindikatorer för att mäta prestandanivå kostnaderna för el (LCoE), investeringar (CAPEX) och effektivitetsfaktor (UF). Så länge CAPEX ligger inom det acceptabla intervallet, skulle LCoE vara den mest bekymrade en så låg som möjligt, följt av UF. Jämfört med konventionell CCGT-anläggning möjliggör den föreslagna träbaserade CSP-anläggningen med kombinerad cykel med effektivitet 0,49 och LCoE på 196USD / MWe effektivitetsförbättringar, medan både CAPEX och LCoE är högre. Å andra sidan måste man notera att CCGT förlitar sig på bränslepriset (naturgas), vilket innebär högre risker och driftsutgifter (OPEX). En känslighetsstudie är involverad med varierande utvidgning förhållande för gasturbin (för att variera dess utloppstemperatur och därmed leverera ström för botten Rankine-cykeln), storlek på TES och sol multipel (SM). Det kan konstateras att samma LCoE och UF skulle kunna uppnås med lägre CAPEX genom att ställa in lämpliga parametrar. A Thermal conductivity probe fo rhigh temperature(HT-TCP) has been built and tested. Its design and construction procedure are adapted from the ambient temperature ther- mal conductivity probe(AT-TCP) due to the good performance softhislast.The construction procedure and the preliminary tests are accurately described.The probe contains a PtwireasheaterandatypeKthermocouple(K-TC)as temperature sensor, and its size are so small (diameter0.6mmandlength60mm) to guaranteea length to diameter ratioofabout100.Calibration tests with glycerolfor temperatures between 0C and 60C have shown a good Agreement with literature data,within3%.First tests on aternarysalt(18%inmassof NaNO3, 52% KNO3, and30% LiNO3) at120C and 150C , have given good results:an Agreement was found with the Thermal conduc- tivity of the standard solar salt(60% NaNO3, 40% KNO3), even if the data for this last have been extrapolated,being it solidat those temperatures. Unfortunately, at the higher temperaturetested(200C), the viscosityof the salt highly decreases,and free convection starts, making the measurements unreliable. The system is designed to provide constant hot water supply during night-time for a solar Membrane Distillation (MD) system. It overcomes the intermittent nature of solar energy to provide a sustainable energy solution for mining water treatment in Australia. The utilization of CFD also proposed a method to predict the performance of a designed TES which estimated the critical configurations such as optimal charging/discharging flow rate, temperature, relative humidity, and pipe arrangement configuration, etc.

In this thesis, I have developed a range of theoretical and numerical techniques for modelling the behaviour of partially coherent optical systems and multi-mode detectors. The numerical simulations were carried out for the ultra-low-noise Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) being proposed for use on the SAFARI instrument on the cooled aperture infrared space telescope SPICA (34 - 210 μm). The optical behaviour of the SAFARI system is described in terms of the optical modes of the telescope, as distinct from the optical modes of the detector. The performance of the TESs were assessed in terms of signal power, background power and photon noise. To establish a method for precisely characterising and calibrating ultra-low-noise TESs, a cryogenic test system was designed and engineered to measure the optical efficiencies of the SAFARI TESs. The multi-mode, partially coherent illumination conditions of the measurement system were engineered to be precisely the same as those of the telescope. A major difference between the test system and the telescope’s optics is that the telescope will have focusing elements, but the test system was designed to avoid focusing elements in order to keep the optical path as clean as possible. The theoretical formalism and numerical models were adapted accordingly to address this difference. The numerical simulations show that the test system could provide near identical optical performance as that of the telescope system even though the focusing elements were absent. I also performed experimental measurements to investigate the optical efficiencies of the multi-mode TESs. The detectors worked exceedingly well in all respects with satisfactory optical efficiencies. In addition, it has been shown that the optical model provides a good description of the optical behaviour of the test system and detectors. Further modal analysis was developed to study losses in the multi-mode horns. Ce travail porte sur l'étude de la propriété d'(A,B)-invariance de polyèdres convexes et son application à la commande sous contraintes et au problème l1. D'abord, nous proposons une caractérisation explicite de l'(A,B)-invariance de polyèdres convexes pour des systèmes en temps discret. Cette caractérisation se traduit par des conditions nécessaires et suffisantes sous la forme de relations matricielles linéaires, et présente deux avantages majeurs vis-à-vis de celles rencontrées dans la littérature : elle s'applique à tous les polyèdres convexes et elle ne nécessite pas le calcul de sommets. Ces avantages se font sentir notamment dans le calcul du domaine (a,b)-invariant supremal inclus dans un polyèdre donne, pour lequel nous proposons une méthode numérique. Le problème de calculer une loi de commande rendant positivement invariant en boucle fermée un polyèdre (a,b)-invariant est également traite. Les relations d'(A,B)-invariance sont alors généralisées à des systèmes soumis à des contraintes linéaires sur la commande et à des systèmes soumis à des perturbations additives bornées. Puis, les résultats obtenus en temps discret sont étendus aux systèmes en temps continu. Ensuite, le problème d'atténuation de perturbations additives persistantes, connu dans la littérature comme problème l1, est étudié. Les domaines (A,B)-invariants intérieurement stabilisables sont d'abord caractérises. Puis, nous proposons une approche décomposée pour le calcul du domaine intérieurement stabilisable supremal inclus dans le polyèdre défini par les contraintes de performance l1. Un niveau de performance donne est atteignable si et seulement si ce domaine supremal n'est pas vide. Cette approche géométrique permet notamment de déterminer directement la solution du problème l1 pour une classe importante de systèmes. Enfin, nous étendons l'étude de l'(A,B)-invariance de polyèdres à des systèmes dont le modèle est soumis à des incertitudes du type structure.

AbstractTranscranial current stimulation (tCS or tES) protocols yield results that are highly variable across individuals. Part of this variability results from differences in the electric field (E-field) induced in subjects’ brains during stimulation. The E-field determines how neurons respond to stimulation, and it can be used as a proxy for predicting the concurrent effects of stimulation, like changes in cortical excitability, and, ultimately, its plastic effects. While the use of multichannel systems with small electrodes has provided a more precise tool for delivering tCS, individually variable anatomical parameters like the shape and thickness of tissues affect the E-field distribution for a specific electrode montage. Therefore, using the same montage parameters across subjects does not lead to the homogeneity of E-field amplitude over the desired targets. Here we describe a pipeline that leverages individualized head models combined with montage optimization algorithms to reduce the variability of the E-field distributions over subjects in tCS. We will describe the different steps of the pipeline – namely, MRI segmentation and head model creation, target specification, and montage optimization – and discuss their main advantages and limitations.

With the shortage of fossil fuels and its negative effects on the environment, solar energy as one type of renewable energy has attracted increasing attention both socially and politically. There are two approached to use solar energy for generating electricity, i.e., using solar energy to directly to make work or integrating solar energy into fossil-fueled plant. The solar-aided coal-fired power generation (SACPG) mechanism is proven an effective way to use solar energy efficiently. In this paper, SACPG system and solar-alone parabolic trough CSP plant are modelled respectively. A comparison discussion related to TES system between SACPG system and solar-alone CSP plant is presented. The aim is to find what role of TES system will play in these two different systems. Through analysis, the role TES system plays varies in solar-alone power generation system and SACPG system. For solar-alone power generation system, the main function for TES system lies in storing surplus solar heat. Besides, there exists an optimum loop number with highest annual SEE with a specific TES hour. However, TES system for SACPG system not only stores the surplus solar heat, but also adjusts working condition. With the help of TES system, the working condition could be set as the high-pressure extraction steam could be totally replaced by solar heat. By doing so, annual solar power generation and annual SEE could be improved compared with that without TES system.

This paper presents an advanced energy cogeneration system that utilizes low temperature waste heat in the range of 60°C to 95°C to produce cold thermal energy storage (TES). Since there is usually a temporal variance between the availability of low temperature waste heat and demand for commercial building air conditioning, a cold TES system is incorporated into this advance energy system. The proposed TES system uses a lithium bromide/water solution both as a refrigerant and as a cold thermal storage material. The cold storage material can be stored at ambient temperature without thermal insulation for an indefinite period of time without losing its charge, making it an ideal system for utilizing peaking system’s low temperature waste heat or to utilize low temperature waste heat during nocturnal operation of continuous generation systems at a time when there are usually low or minimal air conditioning requirements. The heat pump and waste heat is used to recover the thermal storage by reprocessing the stored lithium bromide weak solution to a higher concentration.

Solid particles can operate at higher temperature than current molten salt or oil, and they can be a heat-transfer and storage medium in a concentrating solar power (CSP) system. By using inexpensive solid particles and containment material for thermal energy storage (TES), the particle-TES cost can be significantly lower than other TES methods such as a nitrate-salt system. The particle-TES system can hold hot particles at more than 800°C with high thermal performance. The high particle temperatures increase the temperature difference between the hot and cold particles, and they improve the TES capacity. The particle-based CSP system is able to support high-efficiency power generation, such as the supercritical carbon-dioxide Brayton power cycle, to achieve >50% thermal-electric conversion efficiency. This paper describes a solid particle-TES system that integrates into a CSP plant. The hot particles discharge to a heat exchanger to drive the power cycle. The returning cold particles circulate through a particle receiver to absorb solar heat and charge the TES. This paper shows the design of a particle-TES system including containment silos, foundation, silo insulation, and particle materials. The analysis provides results for four TES capacities and two silo configurations. The design analysis indicates that the system can achieve high thermal efficiency, storage effectiveness (i.e., percentage usage of the hot particles), and exergetic efficiency. An insulation method for the hot silo was considered. The particle-TES system can achieve high performance and low cost, and it holds potential for next-generation CSP technology.

By using both passive and active thermal energy storage (TES) systems, a significant portion of the on-peak cooling can be shifted to the off-peak period and thus the energy costs associated can be considerably reduced. This paper summarizes the results of a comprehensive evaluation of the performance of optimal and conventional control strategies for combined passive (i.e., pre-cooling building thermal mass) and active (i.e., charging ice storage tanks) TES systems for typical commercial buildings in the US. Specifically, the paper examines the impact of selected design and operating factors on the performance of optimal control strategies for combined passive and active TES systems. Among the factors analyzed include building shape, climate, adaptation of optimization control, TES systems control, and utility rate structure. The analysis is performed using a detailed simulation energy program (EnergyPlus) modified to incorporate TES models and various optimization algorithms. The results of the analysis indicate that optimal TES priority controls can achieve up to 35% in on-peak electricity demand reduction and up to 30% in total electrical energy cost savings.

Research began with a literature search to obtain relevant background material. Existing test methods were examined to determine their applicability to HDD and slip boring loads. Two generally applicable methods were identified, Technical Inspection Services (TISI) Gouge Test and the Taber Abraser Test (ASTM D 4060). To reinforce the results of the laboratory testing, a procedure was developed to verify the performance of the selected coating systems on actual HDD installations. Thios involved documentation of the general parameters of the installation, such as length, diameter, and surface conditions and then measuring the quality of the coating system after installation using the procedure developed under PRCI contract number PR-262-9738 titled "In-Situ Evaluation of Directional Drill/Bore Coating Quality, Evaluation of Test Methods". Ten (10) coating systems were selected for examination and an eleventh was added at a manufacturer's request and cost including; 3M 6352, Thanecoat TC-700, Powercrete, Lilly 2040, 3M 206N, SPC 2888, Powercrete J, Isotube, Zebron, NapRick, CeramGard ML.
