The organization of field training in zoology in the territory of the hydrological reserve "Salt Lake" allows to active involve of students in the study of fauna with obtaining significant results. Based on the researches, students of biological specialties defended four diploma papers of the specialist, three master's theses and prepared dozens of course papers. Graduation works according to modern requirements carried out on the basing of their own materials, which requires mastering the skills of collecting, fixing, determining the types of invertebrates and vertebrates, as well as performing complex statistical processing of the obtained results using parametric and non-parametric statistics. There were following topics: «Features of external and internal morphology of Cepaea vindobonensis Ferussac 1821 land snail, from the adjoining territory of the Solonets-Tuzla lake», «Variability of the shell of Chondrula tridens land snail from the adjacent territory of the lake Solonets-Tuzla», «Common and rare species of animals on the territory of the Biloberezhya Sviatoslava National Park (Solonets-Tuzli Lake)», «Ornithofauna of the hydrological reserve of the state significance “Solt lake»", «Interpopulation variability of the shell and genital apparatus of Cepaea vindobonensis Ferussac, 1821», «Conservation activity of NNP "Biloberezhya Svyatoslava»», «Morphological features of molluscs of the Chondrula genus collected near the village of Rybakivka». Masters of the first year of the 2019-2020 academic year are working on two new topics: «Intra- and inter-population variability of the land snail Brephulopsis cylindrica from the Northern Black Sea coast region» та «Intra- and inter-population variability of some parts of the genital apparatus of the land snail Brephulopsis cylindrica from the Northern Black Sea coast region». Thus, the planned field training practice of zoology implemented according to the curriculum, which envisages the collection (removal) of representatives of fauna from nature. This approach allows to exploring the fauna of the uncharted territory that the conservation organization is interested in. Participation of students in the implementation of the state scientific theme motivates to research work, leads to awareness of involvement in nature conservation activities. Conditions for in-depth mastering of specialized competencies by biology students created in accordance with the provisions of the concept of development of pedagogical education. Researches, conducted on the territory, adjacent to Solonets-Tuzla Lake, have revealed dozens of species of invertebrates and vertebrates for which the territory considered as habitat.

The paper deals with the names of geographical objects of Wrangel Island motivated by zoology vocabulary. These lexical units may refer to various species and groups of animals, characteristic features of their appearance and behavior, or include notions and terms of material culture related to hunting, animal breeding, and nature conservation. The study builds on specialized toponymic guides, memoirs and essays, cartographic materials, as well as materials of an interview with the deputy director for environmental protection of the Wrangel Island State Nature Reserve, G. Fedorov. An analysis of the selected material allows us to trace several phases of the island’s development over the rather short (about 150 years) history of its exploration, captured in toponymy as a major element of spiritual culture. Interestingly enough, a relatively large number (19%) of toponyms are motivated by zoology vocabulary, which is explained by the importance of the animal world for Wrangel Island. Moreover, the choice of specific vocabulary from this sphere is associated with the nature of human activity on the island. The island history falls into three periods, each having specific source vocabulary for place naming: 1) discovery and initial inspection of the territory; 2) hunting and fishing development; 3) reserve foundation and environmental activities. The distributional prevalence of motivating tokens speaks not only of the time the name was created or of the nominator’s occupation but also points to the objective features of the island’s animal world and the diversity of its fauna. The analysis of the presented data leads to conclude that toponymy serves both as an illustration and as a direct source of unique historical information related to specific parts of the studied area.

Abstract It is often assumed that birds are able to choose a breeding territory that will later on have the most food for nestlings. Studies on this essential question are, however, few. We studied territory choice of a long-distance migrant, the pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca in southwestern Finland. In one study area, we monitored the territory choice of males via the order of territory settlement. Female territory choice was studied experimentally in another study area where the correlation between male and territory quality was removed by not allowing males a free choice of territory. We defined several habitat characteristics and estimated the abundances of invertebrate prey from air, ground and trees with appropriate traps from the surroundings of the nest sites in both study areas. Against the expectation that parent birds would choose an arthropod-rich territory, neither males nor females seemed to choose those territories that later had the most food for nestlings. There was, however, some evidence that more eggs were laid in territories with more aphids and that more fledglings were produced in territories with high ant abundance. Our findings thus suggest that while it would be beneficial for birds to be able to choose food-rich territories, they may not be able to detect the right cues for doing so early in the breeding season. The possibility and importance of detecting the territories with the best prospects of rearing young may, however, vary among and within seasons and more studies on this topic are clearly needed.

AbstractI studied the social organization of lekking Wire-tailed Manakins (Pipra filicauda) in the Amazonian lowland rainforest of southern Venezuela. Territorial males maintained dispersed territories at lek sites in seasonally flooded forest and were visited by other territorial males, by nonterritorial males, and by immature males. Nonterritorial males became territorial either by establishing a new display area or by inheriting an existent territory. The majority of territorial visitors never engaged in joint displays with territory owners, whereas nonterritorial male visitors attempted displays with the resident bird during more than half of the observed interactions. One-third of the territory owners formed at least periodically close display partnerships with a specific nonterritorial male. Observations during female visits to male pairs and dominant behavior of the resident bird within its territory suggest a hierarchy within display pairs. Dominance relationships, stability in the composition of display pairs, and the possibility for subordinates to inherit a territory indicate that coordinated displays between males may have a cooperative function. However, most female visits were directed to single males, so that joint displays are probably not obligatory for achieving copulations.

The underlying principles of territoriality propose that competition for resources compels individuals to defend areas (territories) that give them exclusive access to critical resources. The theory suggests that only high-quality individuals succeed in occupying areas rich in these resources with consequent benefits in terms of higher reproductive success and/or chances of survival. The main aims of this study were: i) to determine the ecological factors influencing variation in territory size and quality among Bar-throated Apalises Apalis thoracica; ii) to investigate the consequences of these factors for reproductive effort and reward, pair stability and survival; and iii) to investigate the signalling properties of the species' black breast band (a prominent 'badge' emblazoned across the white underparts) in relation to both male and territory quality.

The use of habitat is an important part of a species biology. One resource of great importance for the survivor and reproduction of an individual is the food resource. Thus, the social interactions an animal has during the feeding activities are of extremely importance within its behavioral aspects, which represents the part of an organism trough which it interacts with the environment, adapting to changes and variations. Herons are known to form feeding aggregations of even more than thousands of individuals, in which social components of foraging have been identified and studied for several species. More profound studies of these aspects are yet to poor for the Little Blue Heron, Egretta caerulea. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the social behavior (display postures, vocalizations and co-specific interactions) and the territoriality of the specie during the feeding period in an area of mud bank in the estuarine system of Canan?ia, south coast of S?o Paulo state, Brazil. The defense of a fixed and exclusive area, closest to the mangrove, trough expulsion was observed; some thing that have not yet been registered with concrete data for the specie. Higher capture and success rates, and lower investment rates (steps/min and stabs/min) were registered for individuals foraging in areas corresponding to the defended territory. This could be one of possible reasons for the establishment of territories in the area. Four display postures were registered for the specie, two of then new in the literature, which are used in the interactions between individuals; one vocalization, that apparently is important in the social context of foraging for the specie and, possibly, has a function of advertising and proclaiming the dominance position of the territorial individual within the group. A territorial individual uses three behaviors, of the ones described: expulsion, vocalization and encounter (agonistic encounter between individuals, without physical aggression). Of these, the expulsion is apparently used in the actual defense, actively; while the other two behaviors are used in a more passive way, in the maintenance of the dominance position of the individual, helping it in the defense of its territory in a less direct manner. Therefore, with the results presented in here, new components of the social utilization of the feeding resource for the Little Blue Heron were identified, incorporating aspects of the territorial behavior for a future understanding of its possible adaptive significance. And it also reinforces the importance of the social interactions of herons foraging in great aggregations, in areas ecologically important

Finding compromises between human development and wildlife protection is one concern of society.Taking into account animal movements in planning projects requires some knowledge on species behaviours and on what determines their localizations and their habitat places. Our goal is to be able to represent animal movements on an accurate geographical space in order to simulate and to evaluate the consequences of planning decisions. We first analysed how the features of the landscape influence movements from collected localizations on animals, for example GPS tracks (studies of ELIZ, ANSES, ONCFS, INRA) and from data describing spacesuch as BD TOPO®. The studied cases are about several types of environment and three species: red fox,roe deer and red deer. We found some results that confirm the role played by the spatial features, depending on the studied cases. For instance in a periurban environment, foxes seem to be more inwooded patches and in places with few human activities during some parts of the day (squares, areas with industrial or commercial activities, sides of railways). In a forested environment, deers are more likely to be influenced by slope and forest stands. Thanks to knowledge from data analyses and to literature, we defined a simulation model for animalmovements. We implemented it in the GeOxygene platform. The trajectories are built with an agent approach by taking into account the spatial behaviour of the species and the influence of elements that favour or hinder movements. We proposed a critical view of the modelling choices and some improvements from the comparison with observations and experts advices. Then, scenarios within frastructures are defined so that to identify their impact and their efficiency

Streszczenie:
The study of the diversity of the parasitophauna in wild and domestic animals from various natural and anthropic biotopes of the Republic of Moldova allowed revealing that 80,8% of such animals were infested with mix forms of parasites, in diverse associations from two till five parasite agents. The obtained results suggest that the parasitophauna of the wild animals (deers, roedeers, bisons) roughly correspond to the parasitophauna of the domestic animals (cattle, sheep) pasturing in the neighboring regions. The analysis of the parasitological data show that the parasitic agents could be attributed into two groups: those obligate for wild animals and those common for the wild and wild animals. The high level of infestation of the wild ruminants with fasciolas, dicrocelium, intestinal and pulmonary strongyles, protista as well as the presence of the intermediary and complementary hosts demonstrate again that these take part in maintaining the epizootic chain of diseases and have a huge impact on infesting the domestic animals. In this way, the ambient environment plays an important role in maintaining the epizootic chain of the parasitic infections. The recent parasitic research conducted in domestic and wild animals in Moldova reveal the conversed situation – the wild and domestic animals are reciprocally infested by various parasitic agents while pasturing on the same territory.
