Telecommunications industry had been seen as natural monopoly industry and regulated for a long time. However, with the development of technologies and the change of the view of economy theories, this industry remains little feature of natural monopoly. And modern telecommunications industry exhibits the characteristics of network effect, dynamic, convergence and sensitivities. Telecom market requires both deregulation and liberalization to improve the efficiency, innovation, and ultimately to enhance consumer welfare. The experience of deregulation in the United States and the European Union can be taken as a good example for the countries who are in the progress of opening the telecom market, such as China. Especially, the implementation of the EU competition law will provide the enlightenment for reform of telecommunications industry in China. On one hand, competition law should be applied to adjust the anti-competitive behaviors in Chinese telecom industry and independent sector-specific regulatory agency should be established to ensure fair market access and balanced market structure. On the other hand, in dealing with the conflicts between competition law and sector-specific regulation, at the beginning of liberalization, competition law should be taken precedence over the regulatory policy.

The worldwide liberalization of the telecommunications industry has accelerated due to an explosion of technological innovation, growing consumer sophistication, and increasing competition. The process of privatizing state owned telecommunications corporations in Europe and other areas of the world is comparable to the deregulation of the telecommunications industry in the United States. This thesis explores the link between innovation and privatization in the telecommunications industry. In addition to providing an analysis of how innovation and privatization are connected in the telecommunications industry, the thesis also examines the structure, market trends, technology strategy, and globalization of the industry. Finally, it contrasts the management of innovation and deregulation of two incumbent telecommunications companies, Deutsche Telekom and Bell Atlantic.

Streszczenie:
Supplier selection plays an important role in any organisation. This study investigates and examines supplier selection criteria and the impacts on buying firm performance; specifically focusing on the telecommunications industry in Malaysia. Previous studies in this area have focussed on the criteria such as quality, price, delivery, supplier relationship management and decision making tools and techniques. However, little research has been undertaken to include government policies and business ethics as elements in the supplier selection criteria. After a literature review and interviews, the development of conceptual frameworks and a number of hypotheses were put forward. To achieve an in-depth study, four major telecommunications service provider companies in Malaysia were chosen as a case study. A questionnaire was used as the main instrument in gathering data. The questionnaire is principally concerned with the understanding of supplier selection and its criteria; based upon the variables that are used for the model and hypothesis testing. The study also investigates the relationship between supplier selection and the impact of supplier selection to the company performance. This model was tested using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) technique with the AMOS software application. Results indicated all of the criteria include quality, price, delivery, supplier relationship management, decision making tools and techniques, government policy and business ethics as valid constructs. A good model fit was also established. The findings of this research conclude that the influencing criteria to supplier selection in the telecommunications industry in Malaysia are supplier delivery performance standards and supplier relationship management even when considering the remainder of the above mentioned elements. The price factors were found to be less important due to this factor possibly leading to unhealthy competition in the market in terms of price wars among the suppliers in order to win the business. Most of the criteria are also interrelated to each other and affect the supplier selection decision. This model has added new perspectives to the study of supplier selection in the supply chain management field. As for future research it is suggested that intangible elements such as political, cultural and social influences are included in the conceptual framework; as this would offer important insight for management bodies in organisation, academia and public policy fields alike.

McKechnie, William. "Collaboration in the telecommunications industry : a case study". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2009. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1253/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
It is argued that for organisations to truly achieve high and consistent levels of performance in their dealings with other firms they must move from contract based models predicated on the pursuit of cost efficiencies and the exploitation of bargaining power to more collaborative or partner based models. These new exchange relationships pursue greater organisational value through the development of cooperative working practices and the nurturing of trusted relationships. It is proposed that this type of approach to other firms can reduce transaction costs and increase productivity as well as improve innovation and learning which, it is further argued, is more important than contract and cost efficiencies in creating sustainable competitive advantage in a dynamic and uncertain environment. This study examines inter-firm relationships from a practitioner’s perspective. The goals of the study were to develop the author’s knowledge of collaborations to assist in his role as Account Director for a major Network Systems Integrator and to add to the academic research on inter-firm collaboration. This thesis documents the findings from the study. It examines the collaborative literature and introduces an integrated model of academic research and theoretical principles which collectively are proposed to predict successful collaborations. The thesis charts a case study of an inter-firm relationship in the UK telecommunications sector over 8 years, recording and analysing the main purchasing and collaborative episodes over that period and providing a unique insight into the dynamics of an inter-firm relationship in a highly competitive and highly uncertain industry. The thesis includes a significant examination of the literature on research methods and services science. The services science review was conducted through a collaborative lens, with the literature analysed in terms of its contribution to collaboration theory and practice. The findings from the study illustrate that the literature on alliances and collaborations is extremely fragmented with no universal theory to guide the practitioner. A pervasive theme from the literature was that firms in a highly competitive and uncertain environment are more likely to seek value through collaborations. The study examines the extent to which a collaborative approach is being pursued in the case of a firm in the UK telecommunications sector. The case investigates the veracity of the literature and highlights the practical challenges associated with creating value through collaborative initiatives. The findings indicate that inter-firm relationships are extremely complex economic, social and political arrangements requiring significant management effort and consequently attracting significant costs. The case charts the evolution of a relationship from a traditional customer-supplier exchange model to a more complex arrangement characterised by portfolio relationships and competitive collaborations underpinned by reciprocity. Creating collaborative value in this environment is subject to successfully navigating an array of organisational and cultural barriers significantly under represented in the literature with exchange behaviours relating to lack of leadership, moral hazard, opportunism, hold-up and competitive learning being at the core. In the case examined, these behaviours existed within a culture of institutionalised antipathy towards outside firms which ultimately led to the failure of their collaborative initiatives. The implications of this study are significant. The economies of the future are projected to be predominantly knowledge based and services led. Industrial and state competition is predicted to be founded on knowledge management and services innovation. The unit of management for this innovation is said to be the service system as opposed to the firm. Services systems are conceptualised as complex networks of firms, capabilities processes and technologies which are predicated on knowledge collaborations and effective service exchanges. The dominant industrial and academic approaches to explaining and directing management practice in these services collaborations assume an open and productive flow of knowledge across firm and state boundaries. The stated pre-requisite for a firm operating in this environment is that it possesses a collaborative capability, i.e. the ability to work effectively with other firms in a culture of openness and honesty. A capability and culture not found to be prevalent in this study. However, despite the challenges found in case study, the researcher’s closing argument is simple. When competitive performance depends on the firm’s relationships with other firms, managers need to pay attention to the following sets of actions: (1) Building a collaborative intent with the business (i.e. educating stakeholders on the value of collaboration in the context of their business goals and gaining senior management sponsorship and commitment to the process); (2) Developing a collaborative architecture (i.e. a structure (team or function) within the firm which has responsibility for activities at the boundary of the organisation and which is tasked with setting collaborative goals and strategies); (3) Identifying and crafting collaborative arrangements with other firms that support the firm’s strategy (i.e. firm selection, ensuring collaborative fit and developing value propositions in the context of the industry segment); (4) Managing collaborations (i.e. operationalising the relationship, setting joint goals, activities and measures, building relationships, and making joint decisions); and (5) building the appropriate levels of collaborative capital that energise the flow of resources and knowledge across the firm boundaries and create organisational and collaborative value. These activities are proposed to help build a collaborative capability. Although, the findings of this study indicate that the development of this capability and the management of a collaborative environment is a significant challenge and one that potentially requires significant commitment and change on the part of participating firms in order to have any real probability of success.

Streszczenie:
This thesis proposes an empirical analysis of performance in the telecommunications industry, in relation to the regulatory framework in place in the sector. We first provide an introduction and overview of the related literature on performance measurement and regulatory institutions. Chapters 1 and 2 focus on level measures of productivity components and, in particular, of technical change and efficiency. This analysis is motivated by the form of incentive regulation in force in the industry, which links future price increases allowed by the regulator to certain measures of the operators performance. Chapter 1 investigates embodied technical change in the U.S. industry relying on rm-level panel data It builds on the definition of capital as a sum of vintages of different qualities and incorporates this definition into a cost function. Estimates of embodied technical change in this sample vary depending on the specification, but do not appear large enough to affect productivity. Chapter 2 analyses the variation of efficiency over time in the same sample of U.S. operators. This is done by applying estimators that allow for (freely) time-varying efficiency to an input stochastic distance function. Estimates confirm that standard panel estimators, which are commonly used by regulators to assess relative efficiency, do not adequately capture the time-varying component of efficiency. Finally, Chapter 3 studies how cross-country differences in sector performance, measured in terms of access to mobile networks, can be explained by regulatory and country governance. In particular, using a system approach, it considers whether the impact of regulatory governance on penetration can be an indirect result of country institutions. In addition, feedback effects between access to infrastructure and income are incorporated in the analysis. The analysis is carried out on a panel of low and middle-income countries. The empirical results show that the establishment of a separate telecommunications regulator is associated to higher penetration levels, and that this is more important for low-income countries. The effect is partly related to the quality of wider country governance rather than sector specific institutions.

The Jordanian Government is currently considering the process of privatising the Telecommunications Corporation, since it is accused by the Government, of inefficiency and poor performance. This study presents the results of research into the question of what evidence there is to suggest that the Telecommunications Corporation is inefficient and not performing well in its present status as a public enterprise, and why privatisation should improve efficiency. The study also seeks to establish the best policy option available to policy makers in Jordan with regard to the Telecommunications Corporation in the light of worldwide trends of change in telecommunications policy. This study argues that privatisation should be assessed in terms of its origins, motives, stated objectives and its effect on economic efficiency. For performance evaluation, two main approaches are employed, in addition to many performance indicators and sub-indicators. A summary, concluding remarks and agenda for reforming public enterprises is also provided.

Streszczenie:
The wireless telecommunications industry has seen extraordinary growth over the last decade and associated with the widespread adoption of wireless phone service are peculiar pricing schemes such as three-part tariffs and on-net/off-net pricing. This dissertation examines the interaction of consumer behavior and pricing schemes in the wireless telecommunications industry. Chapter 2 addresses in a theoretical model the interaction of consumers' consumption patterns over the billing cycle with the monopolist's provision of access. The service provider designs a menu of contracts to screen privately informed consumers who learn about their actual demand in a sequential manner over the billing period. The model shows that the distorted contracts in the profit-maximizing menu of tariff options are characterized by an increasing marginal price schedule. Three-part pricing schemes commonly observed in the wireless telecommunications industry consisting of a fixed monthly fee, an allowance of minutes and a positive marginal price for minutes consumed in excess of the allowance can be reconciled with rational consumer behavior if the consumer model accounts for the sequential consumption pattern over the billing cycle. Chapter 3 examines termination-based price discrimination, where the price a mobile customers pays for a call to a subscriber on another network (off-net) exceeds the price for a call to a subscriber on the same network (on-net). A standard Hotelling-type model of network competition is combined with closed user groups such as a family or a group of friends who are able to internalize tariff-mediated network externalities when choosing their network. The model results show that termination differentials can reduce social welfare and contradict the commonly held belief that the presence of closed user groups can mitigate networks' market power. The empirical analysis in Chapter 4 presents a structural consumer model of tariff choice and consumption in the presence of three-part tariffs. Econometric results based on individual consumer records suggest that consumers tend to exhibit significant tariff-specific preferences and that the pricing parameters of three-part tariffs have much larger effect on cellular plan choice than on the consumption of cellular calling minutes.

This dissertation examines the process through which distinct national market structures and competitive dynamics could endure in the telecom industry, even as telecom markets were liberalized throughout the Europe Union. The opening of national markets and the international expansion of the telecom operators led many industry observers to predict that a single global market characterized by fierce competition among a few giant firms would emerge beyond the reach of national governments. In the European Union, the initiatives to create a common market for telecommunications posed a further challenge to the national governments' ability to maintain barriers to competition and influence market outcomes in the telecom industry. Finally, the convergence of telecoms, computing and broadcasting stimulated the rapid growth of the internet and a myriad of new on-line services that crossed borders indiscriminately and were very difficult for governments to control. Calling into question the strong predictions of globalization in the telecom industry, this dissertation explores how differences in national regulation, industrial policy and market shape the development of competition in the national telecom markets of France, Germany and the United Kingdom. In each national context policy makers and firms responded differently to the challenges of market liberalization and technological change. First, within the broad European regulatory framework, the national governments adopted different regulatory regimes to oversee the development of competition and the provision of universal service in the liberalized markets. Second, the national governments introduced distinct industrial policy initiatives and regulations to promote investment and innovation in new internet technologies. Third, the new entrants in the liberalized markets were politically powerful national players with very different core businesses and entry strategies. When the European telecom markets were opened to competition, these diverse policy choices and strategic responses created very different frameworks within which competition would develop and new markets for the internet and on-line services would grow.

Arthur, Emmanuel. "Market orientation and firm performance in Ghana's telecommunications industry". Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2016. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/1145/.

Streszczenie:
This study set out to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the adoption levels of market orientation (MO) in Ghana’s mobile telecommunications industry, and to assess its relationship to performance. This was necessitated by the fact that, in-spite of the superfluity of literature on market orientation and its relationship to performance in developed economies and a few on developing nations such as Ghana, there are hardly any studies on Ghana’s mobile telecommunications industry despite its impressive performance. Furthermore, available studies generally assessed market orientation without incorporating any assessment by customers. The study, in addressing these deficiencies, makes significant contribution to academic knowledge on market orientation. Based on literature reviewed, a conceptual model and nine hypotheses are proposed for this study. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods, underpinned by realism philosophy enabled the assessment of the market orientation performance relationship. Qualitative data collection entailed an in-depth interview of ten senior officers of five mobile telecommunications firms operating in Ghana selected by a judgmental sampling method, whose response was analysed by thematic analysis. Quantitative data was obtained by administering questionnaires on 275 staff selected by a simple random sampling method and 302 subscribers selected by a two-stage process of quota and convenience sampling methods. Confirmatory factor analysis, correlation matrix, structural equation modeling and T-test are utilized in the analysis of the quantitative data and the testing of the hypotheses. The findings of the study established that in Ghana’s mobile telecommunications industry, market orientation is determined by one internal antecedent - top management emphasis with no external antecedent influencing it. The significant effect of market orientation on business performance, customer satisfaction, customer retention, employee commitment and employee esprit de corps have also been established by this study. Finally, the study establishes that, when compared, subscribers and staff assessment of the dimensions of market orientation differed with staff rating them higher than subscribers. Based on the findings, the study recommends the need not only for mobile telecommunication operators to continue in the pursuit of market orientated activities, but also undertake measures to close the market orientation gap between them and their subscribers. Top management should also continue with the pivotal role they are playing in the implementation of market orientation, and enhance their information generation, dissemination and responsiveness processes not only to sustain market orientation but also their performance. Notwithstanding the shortfalls identified, which did not adversely affect outcomes of the study, the study has developed an empirical model for market orientation, firm performance relationship for the mobile telecommunications industry incorporating a comparison of the assessment of the dimensions of market orientation by subscribers and staff. It is hoped that this new model will be used for further studies in both developed and developing countries to test the viability of its application.

Renewable energy sources have started to substitute traditional energy sources in power sector, heating/cooling sector, and transportation sector. This paper explores the potential of renewable energy (mainly solar and wind) in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) industry. The focus is on mobile telecommunication infrastructure segment, since it is a prime consumer of energy within the ICT industry. Moving towards solar or wind power sources might bring a major shift in the ICT industry – both on the technological level as well as the service provisioning level. An overview of innovative technological solutions for solar/wind powered telecom networks is provided with a discussion on technological feasibility of innovative standalone solar/wind powered base stations. The market value of these innovative solutions as well as potential power savings are estimated in the total addressable market, the potential market, and the real market. The industry attractiveness of the innovation solutions is assessed using the Porter’s five forces and SWOT frameworks. Furthermore, these innovative solutions are assessed for their potential diffusion likelihood in different scenarios. There are several potential driving forces for the transformation towards solar/wind powered telecom networks. Based on the most important driving forces, plausible scenarios of the future have been identified and analyzed. It is identified that the renewable energy driven transformation in the ICT industry can affect developments in other industries such as automotive, agriculture, healthcare, and transportation industries.

Streszczenie:
The study focused on the academic programs offered for telecommunications technicians provided by 16 two-year and four-year higher education institutions and the ways in which the programs compared to the established telecommunications technicians' skill standards. Six specific research questions concerned the training programs for telecommunications technicians. The first verified the validity of the information in Peterson's 2000: 2 Year Colleges and Peterson's 2000: 4 Year Colleges identifying the institutions offering a communication equipment technology major. The second question focused on the institutions that included telecommunications as part of the curriculum. The third identified the importance of the skill standards to the 2-year and 4-year training programs, and the fourth identified the job functions that were included in or excluded from the training. The fifth question identified the job tasks that were included in or excluded from the training. The final question determined whether the 2-year or the 4-year telecommunications technicians' training program was more closely aligned with the skill standards. In order to accomplish the objectives of this research, a survey methodology was selected. The survey instrument was developed to compare the importance of the telecommunications technicians' skill standards to the 2-year and the 4-year training programs. The skill standards identified in the 1997 collaborative effort facilitated by the South King County Tech Prep Consortium (SKCTPC) was used as the basis for the survey instrument and reference tool. The reference tool provided additional information regarding SCANS skills and personal qualities that were identified in the skill standards for the telecommunications network technician. The survey included five job functions and 16 tasks. The evolution the telecommunications industry has created a demand for a highly skilled, flexible workforce. Higher education institutions have an opportunity to make a contribution to telecommunications industry by expanding existing training programs or initiating telecommunications technicians' training programs. The 4-year institutions should consider revising not only the curriculum but also their mission and goals. The 2-year institutions are closely aligned with the skill standards, and this is an opportunity for the 2-year institutions to update existing programs.

This thesis analyzes the effect of the privatization process on the telecommunications sector in Brazil. Given the international characteristic of this industry, this work dedicated great emphasis in understanding what are the main current issues in the telecommunications industry worldwide. Furthermore, it is investigated how other countries approached this major event - privatization and deregulation - of this critical sector for every society. Models and insights were then drawn and adapted to understand the Brazilian specific situation. It is examined the sector's current situation and its future trends in the Brazilian market after almost three years since the assets were auctioned and transferred to private hands. It is also discussed the potential industry scenarios in each major telecom segment. The conclusion is that a consolidation process is inevitable in order to reach economies of scale and scope in the system and hence guarantee a satisfactory return on the investments to the main players in the market.

Streszczenie:
Technology and regulatory changes have profoundly altered and will continue to alter the way business opportunities are conceived. Entrepreneurs evaluate these opportunities and initiate the start-up of businesses. This study assesses whether the two major factors essential to the entry of smaller telecommunications start-ups, liberalisation and technology changes, result in entrepreneurship opportunities. The South African telecommunications industry is entering its eleventh year of liberalisation and coupled with technological development and convergence in the telecommunications and information and technology sector, the market is set for growth. Technology trends such as wireless, broadband, and the convergence of voice, video and data are bringing dramatic change to the industry and a myriad of business opportunities. The growing number of competitors found amongst Value Added Network Service Providers (VANS), lnternet Service Providers (ISP's), Voice over Internet Protocol operators, Least Cost Routing operators and Wireless operators are clear signs that the telecommunications industry's competitive space is changing. Information regarding entrepreneurship, technology and regulations served as input to compile four sets of questionnaires to conduct the empirical research. The population sample consisted of South African telecommunications industry stakeholders with a focus on new start-ups in the form of VANS, ISP's, USAL's and Wireless Access Service Providers. Data were analysed in respect of the following sections: -Profile information such as licensing category and size of turnover. -Entrepreneurship. -The impact of regulations on entrepreneurship. -The impact of technology on entrepreneurship. The collected data verified the existence and presence of smaller telecommunications players in South Africa. The existence of entrepreneurship opportunities in the South African telecommunications industry is created by entrepreneurial drive, innovation and technology changes. The respondents believe that there are entrepreneur opportunities in the telecommunications industry but the current liberalisation measures are not sufficient to promote entrepreneurship in the telecommunications industry. The respondents confirmed that technology is a much stronger opportunity creator than regulations and that IP communications, wireless and broadband technologies will create most entrepreneurial opportunities. Liberalisation of service-based competition and the unbundling of access networks will also create significant business opportunities. Regulations are not in line with technological progress and prevent South Africa from becoming a true information-centric society. Although sufficient consumer demand exists for services, regulations act as a barrier to enter the market. The draft Convergence Act is not addressing concerns about free and fair competition. A model of telecommunications regulation focusing on competition as a fundamental tool for achieving both economic and social objectives is recommended for implementation. New smaller competitors should be subjected to competition laws as opposed to regulator specific rules. The aforementioned will result in entrepreneurship together with the achievement of free market goals such as fair competition, reduced cost of communication and a thriving e-economy. The licensing framework should allow broad-based competitive entry in "fringe" or value added services. The regulator must become independent of other interests in the telecommunications sector and independent of political interest. The changing landscape of local interconnection with multiple operators providing different combinations of the same integrated services must be revisited. Regulations should be brought in line with technological progress. The importance of advanced technology in the new e-economy is unmistakable, and technology should be applied in an entrepreneurial context. The South African government should seize technological opportunities in the changing telecommunications industry. This however, requires entrepreneurship, good management, and frontier technical knowledge, a detailed understanding of consumer demand, wise public policy direction and effective regulation.

Streszczenie:
As pressure from regulation and customers increases on telecommunications equipment manufacturers and service providers to reduce the hazardous material content of telecommunications products and generally improve environmental performance, new methods for Product Life Cycle Management are required. Supplier and component environmental evaluation are vital and fundamental elements of any Product Life Cycle Management programme, as is the capture of data from the supply base. The information that needs to be captured from the supply base to meet the requirements of customers of telecommunications equipment providers; to meet the requirements of legislation; and to provide data for improving ecodesign and facilitating product-focused continual improvement for ISO 14001 has been identified. A method for capturing data from the supply base has been developed and recommendations made for implementation. A hierarchical supplier and component eco-evaluation methodology has been developed and tested. This methodology incorporates supplier environmental management performance, component inherent human toxicity, ecotoxicity and resource depletion. It provides component qualifiers and purchasers with a method of supplier environmental performance comparison and enables this criterion to be integrated with existing criteria such as quality and cost in the component and supplier selection decision-making process. Recommendations are made regarding the implementation of an industry-wide system to enable the capture of detailed product material composition data from the supply chain and the implementation of the eco-evaluation methodology to identify the supplier that has superior environmental performance. The result will be enhanced decision making in product design and manufacture, improved transparency in communication to customers and more informed decision-making at the end-of-life stage of the product life cycle.

This paper studies five mergers in the European wireless telecommunication industry and analyzes their impact on prices and capital expenditures of both merging carriers and their rivals. We find substantial heterogeneity in the relationship between increases in concentration and carriers' prices. The specifics of each merger case clearly matter. Moreover, we find a positive correlation between the price and the investment effect; when the prices after a merger increase (decrease), the investments increase (decrease) too. Thus, we document a trade-off between static and dynamic efficiency of mergers.

By November 2003, wireless telecommunications operators were required by the FCC to have implemented wireless number portability. The FCC and the media claimed that this decrease in the cost of switching would force operators to react competitively by either decreasing prices or increasing the services offered at the same price to prevent customers from migrating to competitors. This paper empirically analyzes the effect that this regulation had on plan prices offered by the top four U.S. cellular operators over the period of Q2 2002 through Q2 2008, identifying whether they increased or decreased and by how much. This paper concludes that three out of the four nationwide carriers lowered prices in response to the implementation of wireless number portability

The telecommunications industry ('Telco'), a service provider business, is undergoing significant changes such as deregulations, technology changes and increasing competition. Managers face increased pressure to bring new products with the latest technology into the market faster. Few previous studies have analysed New Product Development (NPD) projects in this hypercompetitive industry. This research addresses this gap by investigating Telco NPD projects and the associated skill sets needed by successful project managers.--The study evaluated how project managers' various skills contribute to project management success. Incorporating clear definitions grounded in the recent literature on NPD, management and leadership, the research proposed a new organising framework of four groups of skill sets: technical, leadership, managerial and administrative. Technical skills are the knowledge of technologies on which the project work is based. Leadership skills involve influencing project stakeholders to deliver a quality product within time and budget. Managerial skills are needed to develop and execute project plans and to get project work done. Administrative skills include understanding an organisation's structure, culture, policies, processes, methods and tools.--Previous classifications for Telco NPD projects have over-emphasised product innovation and undervalued the process aspects. While small projects provide fewer management challenges, this study found that project managers of large and complex projects require all four skill sets. Managerial skills are mandatory. Technical and administrative skills enhance understanding of the technology and business processes. Leadership skills are limited at an operational level. Managerial and administrative skills are essential for developing and implementing project plans; technical skills are important in the initial project stages; leadership skills are needed from the beginning until delivering a new product.--The research outcomes can be used when hiring and developing NPD project manager professionals in the Telco industry to complement current project manager competency standards, which do not cover all the skill sets. Findings may be applicable to Telco companies in other countries new to such market conditions. Furthermore, other industries may adapt the skill set framework to suit their own particular requirements.

Using the tools of structural and network analysis developed by Ronald R. Burt and others, this study investigated the communication patterns among corporate officers of American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation (A.T. & T.) and United Telecommunications Corporation (Sprint). Data on contacts, efficiency, network density, and constraint indicate that opportunities for power and constraint have remained relatively stable at United Telecommunications between 1980 and 1990. A. A.T. & T., on the other hand, was more affected by the drastic changes in the telecommunication industry. The span of A.T. & T. has grown smaller and the potential for constraining relations among A. T. & T. and financial institutions has increased during the period 1980 and 1990.

Streszczenie:
Following Roberts (1990) and Dent (1990). this study investigates the importance of complexifying the relationship between strategy and accounting. The genealogical approach of Hoskin et al (1997) provides inspiration as to the ways in which strategic discourse (itself promoted as a subject of study by Knights and Morgan (1990,1991,1995)) is historically contingent upon practices of accounting. I take up this task of inaugurating the study of accounting practice and strategy discourse, from strategy to accounting, to develop a new perspective of how their interaction takes place. This gives birth to a re-reading of the strategy (and accounting) literatures, from the direction of a constitutive notion of accounting practices. In particular, the processual and critical schools of strategy are found to promote conventional notions of accounting as mirror, as secondary and passive practice, which circulate beneath the usual level of visibility. Building on this emergent approach, a post- Foucauldian theory of practices is outlined from a methodological viewpoint. This approach does not begin from such general categories as 'the individual', 'the social' or 'the economic', and thereby does not follow conventional understandings of 'doing ethnography'. The inquiry is empirically situated within the context of a longitudinal investigation (1997-2000) into the U. K. based part of a global telecommunications company, Teleco. I discover complex interactions between accounting practices and the workings of strategy, both as presence and absence. There is a partial presence of strategy even within the most 'strategic' parts of Teleco, in conjunction with a growing absence within those parts most distant from 'the strategy'. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, the spread of accounting and accounting based-practices rolls on, albeit in a non-uniform way. This brings forth the possibility of a strategic accounting, one whose practices are perhaps most visibly internalised and effected on my very self, thus adding weight to the rejection within this thesis of the metaphysical categories of either 'strategy' or 'accounting.

In the telecommunications industry, the market is highly global as well as competitive in this era of Internet and data communications. Telecommunications carriers compete with not only other telecommunications carriers providing broadband access and mobile communication but also network application and service providers, which are significant threats for telecommunications carriers. It is difficult for telecommunications carriers to control the market for two significant reasons. Firstly, due to the maturity of technology as well as customers, network services have become commoditized. Secondly, telecommunications network services are vulnerable to over-the-top services based on the Internet. This study aims to investigate how large telecommunications carriers can continue to be competitive in such an environment. This paper focuses on three kinds of strategic options that enable large high-tech companies to continue to make profits; internal R&D, growth and diversification, and M&A. In the second chapter the author focuses on IBM and Cisco, which are good examples of how large companies have evolved over time, combining these three strategies. Then, the use of the three strategies by major telecommunications carriers is investigated. Finally, in the fourth chapter, the author analyzes the future competitiveness of the NTT Group, the major telecommunications carrier in Japan, using these strategies within the next decade.

Streszczenie:
Research suggests that adaptations of advanced-economy business models to challenging base of the pyramid (BoP) market conditions involve experimentation. We analyze the conditions that facilitate developing country entrepreneurs to learn about business models and the incentive of local and multinational firms to carry out experiments for BoP adaptations. We test our frameworks’ implications on the evolution of the mobile telecommunications industry across Africa. Contrary to the economic models that posit one-directional investments from the North to the South, our findings suggest a two-step industrialization process. The spillover of modern-industry knowledge from the North through Joint Ventures enables a few entrepreneurial firms in the South to gain access to valuable knowledge with which they actively experiment and, through successful BoP adaptations, gain ownership advantages and further internationalize across the South, catalyzing the growth of the industry. Overall, the thesis shows how these entrepreneurial firms with a particular heritage are at the core and explain most of the development of the mobile industry in sub-Saharan Africa. This thesis further explores the factors that influenced the diffusion of mobile telephony in Africa. Whereas prior research has focused on the role of country and industry characteristics in country-level measures namely the adoption rate of new products and services, price, total investment and employment in related sector, this thesis examines whether such patterns across countries can be influenced by the heterogeneity in quality of firms that enter in those countries. The thesis also presents a set of detailed case studies of pioneering companies, including two of these key entrepreneurial firms with heritage.

Streszczenie:
Income decreasing strategies conducted by management could be harmful for various stakeholders. One example is big bath accounting, which could be accomplished in numer- ous ways. This study focus on big baths achieved by recognising impairments of goodwill. Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine patterns of association between big bath accounting and impairment of goodwill within the telecommunication service industry in Europe. Further, this study aim at contributing to the discussion regarding utilisation of big baths through impairments of goodwill, and takes the perspective of an external stakehold- er. Delimitations - The study is restricted to European telecommunication entities comprised in STOXX Europe 600 Index. Method - This study was conducted using a hybrid of qualitative and quantitative research strategy with a deductive approach. The five indicators used to identify various big bath behaviours were inspired and derived from theory and previous research. Data from 2009 to 2015 was collected from the companies’ annual reports and websites, and analysed by the help of codification of each fulfilled indicator where 2009 merely served as a compara- tive year for 2010. By the use of a scoreboard the collected data was summarised on an ag- gregated yearly basis as the industry, not the specific companies, were analysed. Empirical findings - The results of this study suggests that big baths are executed among tele- communication companies within Europe. These are conducted simultaneously as impair- ments of goodwill are present, facilitated by earning management. A possible explanation is considered to be the room for interpretation inherent in IAS 36, enabling goodwill impair- ments to be recognised on managers’ command. Thereby an impairment could be “saved” for better or worse circumstances, or recognised when there exist an opportunity to max- imise (the manager's) wealth in the future. This study reveal the co-occurrence of goodwill impairments and big bath-indications, however a review of causal relationships are not en- abled by the limitations of the chosen method.
