(1) Background: Healthy teenagers are often sleepy. This can be explained by their physiology and behavioral changes; however, the influence of CO2 concentration above 1000 ppm should not be neglected with respect to sleep dissatisfaction. (2) Methods: CO2 concentrations were measured in two similar bedrooms occupied by girls aged 9 and 13 years old. The scheme of measurements included random opening and closing of the bedroom doors for the night. Additionally, the girls evaluated their sleep satisfaction in a post-sleep questionnaire. (3) Results: During the night, the CO2 concentration varied from 402 to 3320 ppm in the teenager’s bedroom and from 458 to 2176 ppm in the child’s bedroom. When the bedroom doors were open, inadequate indoor air quality (IEQIII and IEQIV categories) was observed in both the teenager’s and child’s bedroom during 11% and 25% of the night, respectively; however, closing the doors increased the contribution of moderate (IEQIII) and low (IEQIV) categories of air to 79% and 86%, respectively. The girls were dissatisfied only when the bedroom door was closed. The satisfied category of sleep was selected only by the younger girl. (4) Conclusions: Opening the bedroom door during the night can decrease the CO2 concentration 55–64% without reducing thermal comfort.

Requirements for cellular homeostasis appear to be unchanged between childhood and maturity. We hypothesized, therefore, that the kinetics of O2 uptake (VO2) in the transition from rest to exercise would be the same in young children as in teenagers. To test this, VO2 and heart rate kinetics from rest to constant work rate (75% of the subject's anaerobic threshold) in 10 children (5 boys and 5 girls) aged 7–10 yr were compared with values found in 10 teenagers (5 boys and 5 girls) aged 15–18 yr. Gas exchange was measured breath to breath, and phases I and II of the transition and phase III (steady-state exercise) were evaluated from multiple transitions in each child. Phase I (the VO2 at 20 s of exercise expressed as percent rest-to-steady-state exercise VO2) was not significantly correlated with age or weight [mean value 42.5 +/- 8.9% (SD)] nor was the phase II time constant for VO2 [mean 27.3 +/- 4.7 (SD) s]. The older girls had significantly slower kinetics than the other children but were also found to be less fit. When the teenagers exercised at work rates well below 75% of their anaerobic threshold, phase I VO2 represented a higher proportion of the overall response, but the phase II kinetics were unchanged. The temporal coupling between the cellular production of mechanical work at the onset of exercise and the uptake of environmental O2 appears to be controlled throughout growth in children.

Abstract Introduction School-age children (6-13yrs) and teenagers (14-17yrs) should receive 9-11hrs and 8-10hrs of sleep/day, respectively. Several studies have shown, however, that these age groups are chronically sleep deprived. Our study assessed the sleep patterns of a sample of children and teenagers in Athens, Greece. The study is part of a larger project investigating the association between orthodontic treatment and sleep disturbances. Methods Participants (N=27; 69% females; 21 school-age children 9-13yrs, 6 teenagers 14-17yrs) were under treatment in the Orthodontic Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University. Sleep was assessed with actigraphy/logs for 59±19 days. Results Participants slept on average 7.36±0.42hrs/day. Nighttime sleep was on average 7.23±0.43hrs (percentage sleep: 87.3%±3.38%). Four (14.8%) participants napped at least once/week. Compared to the lowest sleep duration recommended for their age group, participants showed a chronic sleep deficit of 1.42±0.52hrs/day (range: 0.32-2.15hrs). The younger age group had an average sleep deficit of ~1.6hrs compared to ~0.8hrs for the teenagers (p=0.006). During the school year, daily sleep duration increased by ~0.73hrs on weekends (7.78±0.67hrs) compared to school nights (7.05±0.48hrs; p<0.001). On average, school-age participants slept from 23:13 (±31min) until 7:19 (±22min) on school nights and from 23:23 (±2:72hrs) until 8:49 (±39min) on weekends. Teenagers slept from 00:34 (±36min) until 7:40 (±14min) on school nights and from 01:34 (±41min) until 10:34 (±48min) on weekends. Conclusion Our findings verify earlier survey results showing that restricted sleep is a problem for children and adolescents in Greece. To our surprise, both age groups go to bed quite late. The impact of late bedtime on sleep duration, however, is larger in the younger group due to their larger sleep needs. In contrast to earlier research in rural areas, napping was not common in our urban sample, probably due to extracurricular activities and studying at home. Support N/A

With the development of the Internet era, the application of smartphones in life is quite useful, and the penetration rate of smartphones will be further increased in the future, making teenagers increasingly dependent on mobile phones. Teenagers are under great academic pressure, and excessive reliance on mobile phones will inevitably affect the formation of normal values. Teenagers, as a special group, deserve our attention. Mobile phone dependence has become a social problem. In this paper, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluate the sleep quality of adolescents, and the factors affecting the sleep quality of adolescents were explored from three dimensions of behaviour, physiology, and emotion based on the sleep quality model. In this study, structural equation modelling was used to test the multiple mediating effects and analyze the relationship between mobile phone anxiety and sleep quality. Through the analysis of the internal mechanism of the two, the results show that the average score of adolescents’ anxiety about mobile phone use is 32.87, and the standard deviation is 10.67. The difference between mobile phone anxiety and sleep quality was statistically significant ( P < 0.001 ); good sleep quality can alleviate the prediction effect of mobile phone anxiety on anxiety and provide reference for promoting the physical and mental health development of adolescents.

Background: Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement that requires the use of energy, where it is recommended, that teenagers get 60 minutes of moderate to severe physical activity. However, almost majority of the teenagers around the globe are getting inadequate physical activity. Objectives: • To analyze social, cultural and religious factors that affect physical activity. • To identify different personal factors such as body image, self esteem and their effects on physical activity. • To identify ecological and academic factors leading to decrease physical activity and its associated comorbidities. • To identify the role of government in evaluating the availability of sports centres and other facilities for adolescents /teenagers. Study Design: A cross sectional study Place and Duration: Conducted Jinnah College Peshawar and Islamia College Peshawar, during from the period March 2018 to May 2018. Methodology: Sample under study was based on teenage students (16 to 19 years) with a total size of 150 students that were part of bachelor program (BS Botany) , who were obese or over-weight by appearance. The students were given standardized questionnaires randomly, regardless of gender. Collected data obtained from questionnaire were analyzed. Results: According to the results, 94.41% students had barriers to physical activities while 5.68% had none. 75 students (50%) said that they did not have any previous bad experiences with their appearance while 30 students (21.7%) said that they did. More- over, 59 students (39.3%) said that their reduced activity was due to lack of time while 55 students (36.7%) felt that the lack of safe places was the causative factor. 60 students (40%) students felt that they needed a partner while 57 students (38%) just felt de-moti- vated. Conclusion: On the basis of this study, we conclude that majority of the students have various barriers regarding their physical activities. 94.31% of the students reportedly have barriers while 5.69% had no barrier whatsoever, and they were well aware of the consequences such as obesity, diabetes etc. Keywords: Physical activity, Barriers, Over-weight, Obese.

This article examines the phenomenology of the secondary benefits of anorexia, namely, the use of this symptom to suppress libido in adolescents and young girls with hypertrophied internal and external religious prohibition on the part of parents to manifest their growing sexuality, due to physiology. The causes of anorexia are described in many scientific works, but the peculiarities of the influence of religious attitudes of parents on the formation of anorexia in adolescents are poorly disclosed. This article reveals the psychological mechanisms (replacing aggression and secondary benefits) that keep the problem and make it impossible to achieve a result in the treatment of this ailment. The article presents a sample of those who applied to a psychological center for help from parents of adolescents suffering from anorexia and at the same time having strong religious prejudices, which, in our opinion, affects the occurrence and retention of a negative symptom under certain circumstances. For successful therapy and prevention of anorexia, we have established what circumstances can contribute to the occurrence of anorexia in adolescents from families with a strong religious orientation. The key point in working with the girls with whom we managed to conduct psychoanalytic sessions was their temporary disconnection from their religious beliefs until a conscious choice in the future. This serves as a prerequisite for an effective solution to the problem, since the existing doubts about religion, what is good / bad, right / wrong, create a certain neurotic pressure and can lead to consequences such as anorexia.

Abstract Aims Cannabis is an increasingly common recreational substance used by teenagers. However, there is limited data probing association of cardiac arrhythmias with marijuana use in this population. Methods and Results We provide prevalence trends, disease burden and healthcare utilization of cardiac arrhythmias associated with cannabis use disorder (CUD) in hospitalized teenagers (13–20 years) using a large national administrative database in the United States from 2003–2016. We used partial least square regression analysis for assessing trends in prevalence of cardiac arrhythmias and multiple logistic regression to elucidate independent predictors of arrhythmias associated with CUD. Among all CUD related hospitalizations (n = 876, 431), 0.5% had arrhythmias. Prevalence trends of arrhythmias among CUD increased six-fold during the study period (P < 0.001). CUD was more prevalent in males and older teens (both P < 0.001). There was a significant risk for mortality when CUD was associated with arrhythmia (7.4% vs. 0.1%, P < 0.001). While mean length-of-stay (LOS) was shorter (4.4 vs. 5.4 days, P < 0.001) for patients with CUD, they incurred three times higher mean hospitalization charges when compared to CUD patients without arrhythmia ($45 959 vs. $18 986, P < 0.001). Both LOS and hospitalization charges showed an uptrend during the study period (P < 0.001). Congenital heart disease, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and obesity independently predicted arrhythmias in CUD while other substance abuse did not change the risk of arrhythmia in CUD. Conclusion Arrhythmia burden is increasing among teenagers with CUD, and co-occurrence of arrhythmia and CUD worsens hospital outcomes.

Abstract Introduction Sleep is vital for healthy development from infancy through adolescence. Despite its importance, false beliefs that conflict with scientific evidence (myths) may be common among caregivers and impair sleep health during these crucial stages. Methods Researchers compiled a list of potential myth statements using internet searches of popular press and scientific literature. We utilized a Delphi process with experts (n=12) from the fields of pediatric, sleep, and circadian research and clinical practice. Selection and refinement of myths by sleep experts proceeded in three phases, including: focus groups (Phase 1); email-based feedback to edit, add, or remove myths (Phase 2); and closed-ended questionnaires (Phase 3) where experts rated myths on two dimensions: (1) falseness and (2) public health significance using 5-point Likert scale: 1 (“not at all”) to 5 (“extremely false/important”). Results Thirty-two sleep myths were identified across three developmental categories: infant (14 myths), child (6 myths), and adolescent (12 myths). Mean expert ratings illuminated the most pressing myths in each developmental category: infant sleep (“Sleep training causes psychological harm, including reduced parent-child attachment:” falseness =4.7, s.d.=0.7; public health significance=4.0, s.d.=1.1); child sleep (“Heavy, loud snoring for my child means he’s sleeping deeply:” falseness=4.8, s.d.=0.6; public health significance=4.7, s.d.=0.7), and teenager sleep (“Falling asleep in class means your teenager is lazy and not motivated:” falseness=4.8, s.d.=0.5; public health significance=4.3, s.d.=0.8). Conclusion The current study identified commonly-held myths about infant, child, and adolescent sleep that are not supported by (or worse, counter to) scientific evidence. If unchecked, these myths may hinder sleep at a critical developmental stage. Future research may include public health education to correct myths and promote healthy sleep among infants, children, and teenagers. Support 5T32HL007901

Abstract Introduction Diet, exercise, and sleep are recognized as the three pillars of health, with the assertion that failure to address one will compromise the other two. We have previously observed an association between inhalant use on sleep in adolescents (JCSM 2021). Our previous data raised concern for disruption induced by nicotine among teenagers. Given the recent increase in THC consumption, we sought to test the hypothesis that THC use among teenagers and young adults would be associated with deleterious lifestyle factors including poor diet and minimal exercise. We further sought to test whether Hispanic/LatinX status was predictive of poor health practices. Methods We conducted a social media survey using Twitter and Instagram to gather data on willing participants. We obtained IRB approval and used validated instruments to gather data on variables of interest. We assessed past and current THC use including in what form (inhalant, edible etc) and concurrently obtained data on diet and exercise patterns using standardized questionnaires. People self reported race, ethnicity, gender, and other factors. Results Of the 471 responders who provided data, we removed suspicious data based on identical responses at a given time suggestive of ‘bots’. We isolated the n=58 (37.3% Hispanic LatinX) who were in our target age range (13-25yrs) with complete data. For THC use, 27/58 participants (46.6%) responded “yes” to current usage, whereas 0 reported previous usage and 31 reported “no” (53.4%). Among people who self-identified as Hispanic/Latinx, 81.8% reported using THC currently whereas among people self-identifying as non-Hispanic, only 24.3% reported current THC use. Among the people reporting regular THC use, diet and exercise tended to be non-favorable compared to non-THC users. Of the 58 participants, only 19 reported never vaping (32.8%) while 15 (25.9%) reported vaping daily or weekly. For cigarettes only 20 people (34.5%) reported never using cigarettes whereas 14 (24.1%) reported using daily or weekly. Conclusion Based on our social media survey, we observed a high prevalence of vaping, cigarette smoking and THC use among adolescents and young adults. People who self-identified as Hispanic/LatinX reported high rates of THC use compared to non-Hispanic people. The implications of these findings for the sleep health of teenagers and young adults are unclear, but may provide a therapeutic target for future research. In the age-related pedagogy and physiology one of important questions is the study of the influence of physical activities on the state of the cardiovascular system of children and teenagers. The reactions of the cardiovascular system in response to physical activity have significant age and gender differences. In this regard, the indicators of the cardiovascular system were analyzed when working on a bicycle ergometer in schoolchildren before, during, at the time of completion of puberty. The aim of this research was to study the age-related characteristics of the testes` cardiovascular system response to dosed physical activity. The revealed regularities of the reaction of the cardiovascular system of school-age children to physical activity can serve as a criterion for assessing their functional possibilities.

Streszczenie:
Little is known about the effects of different intensities of physical training on plasma leptin. This study examined the effect of two intensities of physical training on leptin in obese teenagers, and explored correlates at baseline and in response to 8 months of physical training. The participants were 55 obese youths 12-16 years of age who completed both baseline and posttesting. The youths were randomized to engage in lifestyle education only (LSE), moderate-intensity physical training and LSE, or high-intensity physical training and LSE. Baseline leptin was positively associated with fat mass. Girls had higher leptin levels at lower levels of fasting insulin than boys. The 8-mo physical training doses prescribed to obese teenagers did not result in significant group differences in mean change in leptin, although there was large variability in individual response. The change in leptin was inversely associated with baseline leptin and change in cardiovascular fitness. Diet, physical activity level, visceral adiposity, and glucose concentrations were not associated with leptin, neither at baseline nor in response to physical training. At baseline, total fat mass rather than visceral adiposity was associated with higher leptin levels. Over the 8-mo intervention period, regardless of group membership, youths who had the lowest increase in cardiovascular fitness tended to have the highest increase in leptin. Key words: pediatrics, obesity, insulin, cardiovascular fitness

Human Behaviour and physiology are temporally controlled by circadian rhythms (24 hrs). Circadian rhythms are interrelated with sleep/wake cycles, so, disruption of one causes the alterations of another. A risk rose from the altered circadian rhythm and sleep cycle affects a huge part of the population. Alterations in the sleeping timings cause a profound change in dietary habits which may lead to myriad metabolic ramifications. The metabolic homeostasis within the physiological system is regulated by the molecular basis and alignment of the circadian clock. Negligence of this alteration may produce deleterious effects on human health. So, various behavioral changes should be implemented to manifest a correct alignment of circadian rhythms and to enhance sleep duration, and also to regularize food habits.

AbstractThe aim of the study was to present the relationships between the way of perceiving oneself and the world by young athletes, the cognitive anxiety and the ways of coping with stress. The target group consisted of 222 participants (114 boys and 108 girls) aged 16–20, students of sports-profiled secondary schools. The participants specialised in both winter and summer sports, as well as in individual and team sport disciplines. The following tools were implemented: Attitudes to Intrapersonal, Interpersonal and to the World Questionnaire, Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) and Sport Anxiety Scale. The study showed that negative perception of oneself and others increases the level of cognitive anxiety and decreases the tendencies to search for social contacts in the face of stress. With regard to the positive image of oneself and others, the opposite was observed. The above relationships refer mainly to girls who practise sports.

Streszczenie:
Adiponectin, the most abundant hormone produced by adipose tissue, circulates in 3 isoforms, including high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin. The latter has been suggested to be a better predictor of metabolic disturbances and insulin resistance associated with obesity. This study investigated changes in total and HMW adiponectin, resistin, and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) during a 9-month in-patient treatment program based on physical exercise and a balanced diet in 32 severely obese adolescents. Total and HMW adiponectin, resistin, and HOMA were measured at baseline (month 0) and during the program (months 3, 6, 9). In addition, a control group of 15 teenagers served as a reference for the baseline assessments. At baseline, HMW adiponectin was more markedly decreased in obese adolescents than total adiponectin, and both were lower than in controls. Conversely, resistin and HOMA were higher in obese adolescents. During the program, there was a significant change in body composition and improved insulin sensitivity among obese teenagers. In addition, HMW adiponectin and the ratio of HMW-to-total adiponectin increased throughout the study, whereas total adiponectin only increased up until the sixth month. On the contrary, resistin did not show any significant change. In obese adolescents, a long-term combination of aerobic exercise and a balanced diet, inducing change in body composition and improved insulin sensitivity, markedly increased HMW adiponectin compared with total adiponectin, without any change in resistin concentrations. Our results thus suggest that the determination of HMW adiponectin could be more useful than measurement of total adiponectin in clinical settings.

Binge drinking, an acute alcohol intoxication pattern of particularly concern, is also described, as it appears to be the most common pattern among teenagers when the brain is not yet mature. A number of classification schemes have been proposed specially for social drinking and alcohol dependence, and discussions still surround about them. The article summarize a consensus in classification.

The aim of this paper is to describe how the Brazilian Common National Curriculum Base (BNCC, Portuguese acronym) approaches the issue of sexual education in the area of natural sciences. To this end, the methodology used is a document analysis consisting of the investigation of versions of the BNCC and official documents related to Brazilian education. Considering the importance that the curriculum represents for society, the-re is a need for debate on a national document that fulfils the role of guiding the basic knowledge which is essential for children and teenagers’ learning. This article focuses, particularly, on political issues of curricula framework that are embodied in the desig-ning of BNCC through a qualitative method and through documentary sources. As a basic result, there were few competences that addressed sexuality in Brazilian BNCC, yet in a reductionist way, limiting sexuality to aspects of human anatomy and physiology.

Streszczenie:
The relocation of several thousand members of the Kamba tribe from the Kyulu Hills to the Thange valley near Masongaleni in Kenya provides an excellent opportunity to study the development of the immune response to schistosomiasis mansoni in a population with little or no previous experience of the infection. An adjacent, well-established Kamba community with similar patterns of water contact provides a suitable endemic control population. The immigrants were, uniquely, examined shortly after their arrival in the endemic area, while the prevalence of infection was still low. At this time faecal egg counts peaked atypically around 30 years of age. Over the next 12–18 months infection increased rapidly, especially among teenagers, producing a pattern of infection more typical of endemic communities. This substantially narrows estimates of the time required to develop the important determinants of the age–intensity profile, supporting the notion that changes related to age per se, rather than duration of infection, dominate. Age-dependent factors might include behaviour or physiology, including immune response. This paper provides the background for continuing longitudinal studies on the development of immunological responses to this parasite.

Lifestyle And Physical EducationIn order to improve the influence of Physical Education within schools on the creation of a healthy lifestyle, it is essential to analyze students' opinions in regard to this subject and its teachers. The aim of this research was to establish lifestyle typologies and to find out if these are correlated with the perception of Physical Education and its teachers. The participants in this research consisted of 745 teenagers belonging to three different rural environments. In order to establish typologies related to the use of spare time, a cluster analysis was carried out. Then, the relation between lifestyle and the evaluation of Physical Education was determined by means of the Chi-square test. The results show the existence of two lifestyle typologies. The group with a healthier lifestyle is the one that rates Physical Education and its teachers more positively.

Streszczenie:
Clinical manifestations and the need for treatment varies according to age in males with hypogonadism. Early foetal-onset hypogonadism results in disorders of sex development (DSD) presenting with undervirilised genitalia whereas hypogonadism established later in foetal life presents with micropenis, cryptorchidism and/or micro-orchidism. After the period of neonatal activation of the gonadal axis has waned, the diagnosis of hypogonadism is challenging because androgen deficiency is not apparent until the age of puberty. Then, the differential diagnosis between constitutional delay of puberty and central hypogonadism may be difficult. During infancy and childhood, treatment is usually sought because of micropenis and/or cryptorchidism, whereas lack of pubertal development and relative short stature are the main complaints in teenagers. Testosterone therapy has been the standard, although off-label, in the vast majority of cases. However, more recently alternative therapies have been tested: aromatase inhibitors to induce the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis in boys with constitutional delay of puberty and replacement with GnRH or gonadotrophins in those with central hypogonadism. Furthermore, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) priming prior to hCG or luteinizing hormone (LH) treatment seems effective to induce an enhanced testicular enlargement. Although the rationale for gonadotrophin or GnRH treatment is based on mimicking normal physiology, long-term results are still needed to assess their impact on adult fertility.

Streszczenie:
Over the past few years, an increasing number of studies have shown that playing action video games can have positive effects on tasks that involve attention and visuo-spatial cognition (e.g., visual search, enumeration tasks, tracking multiple objects). Although playing action video games can improve several cognitive functions, the intensive interaction with the exciting, challenging, intrinsically stimulating and perceptually appealing game environments may adversely affect other functions, including the ability to maintain attention when the level of stimulation is not as intense. This study investigated whether a relationship existed between action video gaming and sustained attention performance in a sample of 45 Italian teenagers. After completing a questionnaire about their video game habits, participants were divided into Action Video Game Player (AVGP) and Non–Action Video Game Player (NAVGP) groups and underwent cognitive tests. The results confirm previous findings of studies of AVGPs as they had significantly enhanced performance for instantly enumerating a set of items. Nevertheless, we found that the drop in performance over time, typical of a sustained attention task, was significantly greater in the AVGP compared with the NAVGP group. This result is consistent with our hypothesis and demonstrates a negative effect of playing action video games.
