Streszczenie:
In this thesis, ipek Ongun&rsquo
s three books on good manners and etiquette, which especially aim at teenage girls, are analyzed in detail. Born in 1943, Ongun is a popular Turkish writer in teenage literature who has sold over a million books since 1980s. It is necessary to investigate especially the cultural, social and aesthetic messages given in her books. The writer&rsquo
s non-fiction trilogy has been extremely influential on teenage girls in Turkey in the 1990s, and they still are. These are Bir Piriltidir YaSamak (Living Is a Glitter, 1991), Bu Hayat Sizin (This Life Is Yours, 1993), and Lü
tfen Beni Anla (Please Understand Me, 1995). The themes of major importance in the trilogy are social life, traditions, schools, parenting, beauty, and personal care. This study examines the content of this trilogy from a critical perspective, especially raising questions regarding Ongun&rsquo
s messages leading the construction of female identities from a feminist viewpoint. The qualitative research method has been adopted for the analysis and several comparisons have been carried out between Ongun&rsquo
s books and certain popular teenage etiquette books published in the US. The study concludes that although some of Ongun&rsquo
s messages might be found beneficial for certain segments of the teenage population, the fact that she is not an expert in teenage psychology and development, poses several critical questions about the validity of her messages. Besides, Ongun&rsquo
s target audience seems to be the upper-middle classes of the society also raises questions regarding the universality of her messages.

Streszczenie:
In a book on preventing early pregnancy and poor reproductive outcomes in developing countries, the World Health Organisation (2011) declares that ‘adolescent pregnancy’ contributes to maternal, perinatal and infant mortality, and to a vicious cycle of poverty and ill-health. This statement reflects the common public assumption that ‘teenage pregnancy’ represents an individual, social, health, educational and financial risk that requires remediation. This kind of public perception is spurred by media coverage in which young girls with large protruding stomachs are etched in profile and stories of calamity are told (e.g. Time (21 June 2005) magazine). And yet the very notion of 'teenage pregnancy' is a relatively recent one. Depending on the country one talks about, it has been around since between the 1960s and 1980s. In the United States, for example, the rise of ‘teenage pregnancy’ as a social problem was associated with a shift in gendered power relations. Prior to the late 1960s the morally loaded concepts of 'unwed mother' and 'illegitimate child' were used to describe young women who conceived. For the most part, young pregnant women were excluded from society, with the accompanying shame around the lack of proper conjugal arrangements. The use of the term 'teenage pregnancy' removed the implied moral judgment and replaced it with seeming scientific neutrality. Young pregnant women now became publicly visible and thus the object of scientific scrutiny (Arney & Bergen, 1984).

Streszczenie:
This practice-led PhD consists of two parts: Part One is the creative element, the YA novel Eden Summer; Part Two is the contextualising thesis. Eden Summer uses the search for a missing teenage girl to explore themes of female friendship, grief and resilience. The contextualising exegesis examines the process of writing creatively for young adults in this historical moment, exploring what characteristics might define YA literature, and how they affect the process of writing it. The thesis also takes the opportunity to examine some of the discursive activities connected with publication that can be viewed as constituting the creation of the YA author. The introduction establishes the study’s focus on the intersection between CW and YA. Chapter 1.1 interrogates CW theory, placing it in a historical context, while the second part provides an overview and analysis of the contemporary YA literary landscape in which Eden Summer is situated. Chapter 2 introduces the creative methodology for this study, drawing on and extending existing methodologies, and relates it to the work with evidence from the creative journal (extracts from which are supplied in the appendix), blog interviews and manuscript, before going on to analyse the main structural and thematic elements of the work, including experimental first stages, chronology, landscape and literary inheritance. Chapter 3 examines the definitions of YA fiction through this particular process of writing it, including a discussion of the assumptions and limitations of this new theoretical framework. Finally, chapter 3.2 draws on narrative and discursive theory to examine the construction of the YA author. The conclusion tests the significance of these findings in the light of the original aims of the project, its extension of and contribution to current theorisation of the creative writing process and the relationship between critical and creative work. This thesis demonstrates the complex ways in which the defining characteristics of YA literature shape the writing of it at all stages. Ultimately, the process of becoming the YA author is shown to be aligned with the condition of young adulthood itself.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was twofold. Firstly, it was undertaken to establish whether teenage mothers were motivated to re-engage with education postpregnancy. Secondly, to consider whether Educational Psychologists could support the long-term educational outcomes of teenage mothers. Five teenage mothers between the ages of 16-19 were interviewed using semi-structured interviews, to explore this further: a) What are the views of teenage mothers living within an outer London Borough about their individual educational experiences? b) What similarities and differences are there between their avowed identity and ascribed identity? c) What are their future aspirations? d) Where is the teenage mother situated in structural society? The researcher employed Foucauldian Discourse Analysis to analyse discourse from the participants and discourses within the wider discursive field. This study explored how Educational Psychologists could practice psychology to support teenage mothers in re-engaging with education post pregnancy, which may improve the economic and social prospects of the teenage mother, her long term outcomes and those of her child. Findings indicated that the teenage mothers found motherhood fulfilling indeed and motherhood was in fact an important motivational factor in their future aspirations. Findings also strongly indicated that there is a need for discursive formations which encompass diversity and difference amongst teenage mothers and wholesomely defines their strengths and potential in order to reproduce the “truth”. Research should develop educational programs and in particular literacy programs based on the theory of cultural production in order to equip teenage mothers with language and critical thinking skills in which to negotiate their need for equal access to power and resources; and reposition themselves in order to negate widely held societal presumptions about young mothers. Herein lies the challenge for a new social reality.

Streszczenie:
There has been very little research into repeat pregnancy in teenage mothers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of pregnant teenage mothers who were expecting their second child. Six pregnant teenage mothers were interviewed and asked to complete a number of questionnaires. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of the interview transcripts demonstrated the four following super-ordinate themes: "Being a good mum", "It's not easy but it's a case of having to cope", "Perceptions and misjudgements", and, "Building my life". A number of theories are presented that may help us understand the experience of second pregnancies in teenage mothers. It is hoped that the findings of this study will help us to begin to understand more about the experiences of this population from their perspective and facilitate professionals to be in a better position to provide teenage mothers and their children with appropriate support.

The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the understanding of Thai teenage parents’ experiences of becoming a parent as well as to examine healthcare providers’ reflections on their experiences of caring for teenage parents. The findings are based on three studies using mixed methods and resulting in four papers. The empirical data were collected in western Thailand between 2013 and 2015, in a province with a high incidence of teenage pregnancy. Paper I: Empirical data were based on three self-reported validated questionnaires. The sample consisted of 70 teenage and 70 adult fathers. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Chi-square test were used for the analysis. Papers II and III: A heterogeneous group of 25 teenage couples (n=50) were interviewed before and after the birth of their first child, using grounded theory methodology. Paper IV: Four focus-group discussions were conducted with 21 healthcare providers; latent content analysis was used for analysis. Teenage fathers scored lower than adult fathers on scales measuring the father’s sense of competence, the father’s childrearing behavior, and the father-child relationship (paper I). The teenage mothers reported how they struggled with physical and social changes, for example bodily changes, breastfeeding and having to leave school, while the teenage fathers gave examples of coping with their future responsibility by working hard to save money for future family needs (paper III). The teenagers’ own parents were an important source of support all the way from pregnancy to childrearing, and their provision of childcare, advice, and instructions helped the teenage parents to cope with their duties. Most of the teenage parents reproduced traditional gender roles by being a caring mother or a breadwinning father (papers II–III). The healthcare providers were concerned about the young parents, viewed themselves as providing comprehensive care, and suggested access to reproductive health care and improved sex education as ways to improve quality (paper IV). The young couples’ stories describe how they struggled and coped with life changes when becoming unintentionally pregnant, accepting their parenthood, and finally becoming parents. A supportive family played a vital role in the transition to parenthood. Health promotion efforts for this particular group should be undertaken continuously to improve the quality of care for teenage parents and to promote the infants’ well-being and future development. Streszczenie:
The increasing proportion of teenage girls of West Indian origin presenting for legal NHS abortions at the two teaching hospitals in a district of South London prompted the setting up of this study (1979-81, funded by the DHSS). The study's main aims were to ascertain whether, in fact, the proportion of girls of West Indian origin was higher than would be expected in the district, which has a sizable population of long-settled West Indian immigrants; if so, to identify the most important contributory factors and to make appropriate recommendations for changes or improvements in the services, in order to bring about a reduction in the number of unwanted pregnancies. In all, 550 teenage girls were interviewed: 220 after termination of their pregnancies, and 217 after the birth of their babies; a small comparison group of 113 teenagers who had never been pregnant was recruited in the district's hospital and community family planning clinics. Interviews were conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire and the results compared, where possible, with other similar studies. This survey data, together with systematic and non-systematic observations made throughout the period of the study, were used to give support to the hypotheses. About a third of both groups of pregnant teenagers were of West Indian origin. This was higher than anticipated. Since socio-economic differences did not provide immediate explanations, certain hypotheses were tested which derived from the apparent importance of types of inter-personal relationships (specifically, mother-daughter and boy-girl) as predictors of the risk of a teenage girl experiencing an unplanned and initially unwanted pregnancy. The method of contraception (if any) used by a teenager at the time of her first sexual experience, provided a useful indicator of the type of relationship a young couple had. Girls of West Indian origin appeared to find themselves when they became sexually active, in "segregated" relationships with their partners (as opposed to "integrated" relationships), relationships typified from the study's viewpoint, by the non-use of any form of contraception, at least in the relationship's initial stages. Once having identified what seemed to be a key to the problem (exemplified in the classification of relationship types devised) the question of how best to utilise this knowledge arose. It was suggested that the study's classification of relationship types could provide a useful frame of reference for those health professionals most closely concerned with young women and young men. Recommended changes in the services centred upon changing the attitudes of service workers towards young people, in the hope of improving their image and making them more approachable. It was suggested that a lay visitor on the wards who would also be available to give advice during those family planning clinic sessions directed specifically at young people, would provide invaluable support for teenage girls who had experienced an unplanned pregnancy.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University 2005
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the current study was to undertake a phenomenological investigation on teenage motherhood and to learn how this experience forms part of the teenage mother's life. Using the snowball sampling method, five women aged between 26 and 35 years were selected to participate in the study. All the five women became mothers during their teenage years. Indepth interviews were conducted in Northern Sotho and Tshivenda depending on the language preference and fluency of the participant. The interviews were audio-taped, and later transcribed and translated. A phenomenological method of analysis was used to transform the original data into natural meaning units (NMUs) which were further interrogated so as to distil central sociological themes that were associated with the experience of teenage motherhood. Apart from the finding that the participants got pregnant when they were aged between 16 and 18, five sociological themes associated with teenage motherhood were identified. These are: • Lack of knowledge about sexual relationships contributes to teenage pregnancy and motherhood. • Early childbearing has a negative impact on the teenage mother's social relationships. • Teenage mothers tend to experience emotional problems after delivery of their babies. • Teenage motherhood has a long term disruptive effect on the teenage mother's educational and occupational opportunities. • Teenage motherhood leads to significant lifestyle changes for those who have been through the experience. In view of the above themes, sexual education both at school and at home, is suggested here as a more viable option to help minimise the risk of teenage motherhood in society. Whilst other options like abortion and the newly introduced child support grant are also available to the teenage mother, these are not considered favourable.

The purpose of this study was to discover and understand the life and academic experiences of high school teenage mothers and expecting teenage mothers. The research questions was, How do these teenage mothers and expecting teenage mothers describe their life and academic experiences in a Missouri high school; What challenges do they face to successfully continuing their education; and What would they want and/or need in a high school-based child-care center if it were to be implemented as part of the high school’s intervention with this at-risk population? The study was conducted at a medium-sized Midwestern Urban High School. The researcher interviewed 16 teenage mothers and expecting teenage mothers to provide insight into the research questions. Pseudonyms were used to preserve anonymity. Interviews were conducted face-to-face. The themes that emerged from the interviews included (a) problems with child-care, (b) barriers to resources, (c) teenage mothers’ and expecting teenage mothers’ recommendations, and (d) teenage mothers’ and expecting teenage mothers’ attitude toward pregnancy. Based upon the findings in this study, several recommendations may be beneficial to the life and academic success of teenage mothers and expecting teenage mothers attending urban high schools in Missouri: The inclusion of an on-site child-care center, whether it is in an adjacent building from the school itself or in a separate section within the school, would allow this particular population to attend school daily and on time regularly; therapeutic counselors and/or social workers along with guidance counselors should also be placed in the urban high schools; based on the participants’ statements, job training and paid internships placed in the schools would prepare the young mothers for jobs upon completing high school; visits from licensed pediatricians and dentists are recommended in the schools to see the children on a monthly basis; and the inclusion of a father support center should be placed in the urban high schools to work with teaching males, especially those who are fathers of children by the young ladies who are attending the school also, to be fathers whether their children attend the on-site center or not.

Magister Artium - MA
Globally, teenage pregnancy remains a disturbing phenomenon which impacts on the lives of teenagers, their families and society as a whole. Numerous attempts at addressing the problem have seen a decline in fertility rates but agreement still exists that the incidence of young girls bearing children is unacceptably high. Studies conducted over the years have emphasised both the causes and consequences of teenage births. Many studies too have explored the benefits of preventative strategies. Yet, despite all this, teenage pregnancy remains a cause for concern with many teenage girls remaining sexually active after a first pregnancy, and exposing themselves to subsequent pregnancies and births. This study was focused on teenage girls who had experienced unintended repeat pregnancies. Through the research a deeper understanding of the meanings that female teenagers ascribe to repeat pregnancies, were sought. A sample group of teenage mothers were allowed to take a step back from their experience of the repeat pregnancy; to think deeply about the experience, and to reflect on what they had learnt and how it has impacted on their current lives. The researcher employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive, explorative design in order to obtain a rich description of the experiences of teenage mothers who have been through a repeat pregnancy. The goal of the study was to explore and describe the reflections of these teenage mothers who had experienced unintended, repeat pregnancies. Data was obtained through semi-structured individual interviews where an interview guide was used. The data was analysed according to the steps outlined by Creswell (2009). Findings were noted and recommendations made. These recommendations are designed for role-players involved with teenagers and youth in general. Emphasis was placed on recommendations to professionals, like educators, healthcare workers and social workers who are at the coalface of dealing with teenagers who engage in sexual activity. Finally, recommendations for further research were made.

Streszczenie:
This qualitative research seeks to improve our understanding of the relatively under-researched phenomenon of repeat teenage pregnancies, by exploring the underlying factors and meanings that teenagers ascribe to their pregnancies. The study uses a comparative approach to provide a comprehensive psychosocial and economic understanding of the factors leading to repeat teenage pregnancies. This is achieved by exploring both the diverse and similar experiences of two groups of teenagers within different socio-economic environments - one group of 26 respondents from the Caribbean islands of Jamaica and Barbados and the other group of 26 respondents from London. The research also capitalises on a unique opportunity to contextualize the welfare dependency/teenage pregnancy discourse. The behaviours, motivations, values and attitudes of young women who become repeatedly pregnant in a Welfare state such as England, are compared with those living in countries with limited state resources and few state benefits. The comparison shows that in the latter case, the lack of state intervention can have the disempowering impact of fostering dependency in many insidious forms. The findings demonstrate the very powerful influence that both intentional and hidden or masked factors can have on a young woman's decision to repeat a pregnancy. The intrinsic relationship between the personal driving forces of the young women and their repeated pregnancies is convincingly highlighted. These driving forces are accompanied by very strong and deep-rooted beliefs in the importance of motherhood and fertility, as well as anti-abortion views. When these factors are added to economic stringency, they provide the fuel for a young woman's journey into repeat pregnancies. The findings therefore caution against a reliance on a mechanistic understanding of both single and repeat teenage pregnancies and emphasise the fact that social, psychological, and emotional processes, as well as the economic influences, are also crucial to our understanding of repeat teenage pregnancies.

Streszczenie:
Decreased educational attainment has been associated with numerous factors such as teenage pregnancy, repeat pregnancy, risky sexual behavior, substance use, depression, and parental distress. Educational attainment was examined among a group of predominantly Mexican American teenage mothers who were considered at high risk to have a repeat pregnancy, contract sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and use substances. Project Success Longitudinal Study is part of a national study funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Participants were recruited from eight traditional high schools in a large South Texas school district, an area with a high rate of teenage pregnancy and substance use. The treatment intervention included a multidimensional curriculum that was implemented in the participants' high schools in addition to home- and school-based case management services. It was hypothesized that participants who received the intervention would be more likely to attain their high school degree or equivalent and that amount of treatment received would be associated with educational attainment. Additionally, it was hypothesized that profiles of participants who attained their high school degree or equivalent would differ in the areas of parental distress, social support, symptoms of depression, and substance use when compared to participants who did not attain their high school degree or equivalent. Results indicated that participants who received the intervention reported increased educational attainment during the first two years of the study. Additionally, all participants experienced positive changes on various psychosocial measures.

Streszczenie:
ABSTRACT Despite efforts to establish national objectives, legislation, policy statements, advertisement campaigns and other initiatives to promote and support breastfeeding, segments of the population who are lower-income, less educated, and younger than twenty five are least likely to initiate and sustain breastfeeding. The purpose of this study was to understand the meaning of the lived breastfeeding experiences. The qualitative method of phenomenology was chosen to guide in-depth interviews with five women who were 18 or 19 years old and enrolled in the Nutrition Education and Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) while breastfeeding. Analysis revealed the essential structure of the breastfeeding experience to include three elements: deciding to breastfeed, the breastfeeding experience, and outcomes of the experience. Women formulated their perceptions of breastfeeding through past experiences, identified reasons to choose this feeding method and were supported to breastfeed. The experiences of learning how to breastfeed, coping with challenges and the support they received to continue breastfeeding impacted their experience. All of the women in this study used breast pumps for different reasons and had varying success. Women in this study had a range of comfort levels breastfeeding in front of other people. Emotionally, women experienced stress, frustration, insecurity, self sacrifice, but also felt empowered to learned how to breastfeed. Being the soul source of their infant’s nutritional needs made them feel special and contributed to the close bond they developed with their child. Paradoxical feelings regarding the joys and difficulties of breastfeeding are also experienced by adult women. However, adolescents may be more susceptible to the intensity of the breastfeeding relationship because of other developmental transitions they are undergoing, making adaptation into motherhood more difficult. Overall, women felt that hardships experienced were well worth the benefits. Implications for nursing and public health practice include promoting awareness of breastfeeding through legislation to support women’s right to breastfeed, celebrating breastfeeding publicly, and fostering breastfeeding friendly workplaces. Women should receive anticipatory guidance about what to expect with breastfeeding, how to manage physical and emotional challenges, be educated on ways to minimize embarrassment, and be informed of the availability and use of breast pumps. Young women who have had breastfeeding experiences and desire being role models for other young women should be incorporated into teen pregnancy programs to talk with pregnant adolescents about the breastfeeding experience.

Streszczenie:
Pregnancy in unmarried teenaged girls in America today is a growing concern to health care workers, educators, government officials and parents. Pregnancy during adolescence is not an issue because births to teenagers are increasing but because teenage pregnancy is no longer a societal option. This paper describes adolescent pregnancy from within the context of the subculture of adolescence and from the perspective of 16 pregnant, teenaged girls. The findings revealed a description of the life experiences of pregnant teenagers and introduced health-care issues that were not previously disclosed in other research studies of pregnant teens. The anthropological concepts of liminality, the double-bind, social labeling, and schizmogenesis served to guide the research. The concepts also helped to explain many behaviors and observations that were made of the informants throughout the research. An ethnographic approach using participant observation and ethnographic interviews was used to collect data from 16 pregnant, unmarried, teenaged girls in a large Southwestern, urban area. The informants ranged in age from 14 through 19 years and represented various backgrounds. Nine informants resided in a home for unwed, pregnant teenagers with the remainder residing in diverse locations. Data analyses occurred concurrently with data collection as part of an ongoing process. Data were ordered and transcribed within a framework designed to enhance thematic analysis. Transcribed interview and observational data were transferred onto the Ethnograph, a data-management software program. Data were coded using substantive and conceptual codes. Codes were linked according to patterns of association and frequency of occurrence which in turn led to the revealing of recurrent thematic patterns. In all, eight themes were revealed: (1) pregnancy is bad; (2) loneliness; (3) waiting it out; (4) dependency; (5) looking bad; (6) giving up baby; (7) losing what was; and (8) losing control. Thematic content also disclosed many inconsistencies and double-binds between the larger Western macroculture and adolescent subculture. Ethnographic themes and expressions of these themes provided new information for constructing health-related interventions with pregnant teens.

Streszczenie:
In recent years teenage pregnancy and parenthood have been topics of much debate within academia, government and the media in the UK. The contemporary problematisation of teenage parenthood has meant that young mothers have been the subject of a number of recent policy interventions. This thesis examines the issues which confront young mothers in the context of these social policy interventions. It provides an overview of the literature debating the conceptualisation of teenage pregnancy and parenthood as a significant social problem. In addition, it traces the development of policies aimed at reducing the incidence of teenage pregnancy and supporting teenage parents. The thesis involves a qualitative study of young parents and their responses to these problematising discourses and the policies they have stimulated. Qualitative research methods are used to examine key 'decisions' and 'choices' made by young women as they 'become' mothers. Participant observation was conducted in three young parent support groups in the South East of England. This was followed up with a range of interviews and focus groups to elicit a deeper understanding of motives and influences behind key 'decisions' made by young parents. The discussion of 'decisions' are divided into three areas. Firstly, contraceptive and reproductive 'decision-making'; secondly, the 'decision' to continue with a pregnancy; and, thirdly, 'decisions' relating to relationships, education and employment made by the women once they have 'become' mothers. This allows a sense of the women's 'paths' to 'becoming' mothers to emerge. This thesis adds to the emerging debate which challenges the contemporary problematisation of teenage pregnancy and parenthood in media and policy discourses. The focus on young women's 'decisions' provides a unique approach to examining the experiences of teenage parents in relation to policy. Consequently this enables a valuable insight to emerge of the ways in which social policy is experienced by those it is designed to support. Frameworks of gender and constructions of 'good' motherhood are employed to understand how the women engage, resist and manage social policies aimed at shaping their behaviour. As such, some assessment can be made of the 'successes' and 'failures' of policy approaches to teenage pregnancy and parenthood.

Thesis (M.A. (Clinical Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2012
Recent research has established that teenagers have the means to prevent pregnancy but many do not necessarily use them, because they are open to the idea of becoming pregnant, or have a desire to parent their own child. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between attachment and teenagers’ desire of becoming pregnant and parenting a child. The sample of the study, selected through convenience sampling, comprised 455, 14 and 15 year old registered female learners from selected urban and rural high schools in Mopani District, Limpopo Province. Findings from structural equation modeling indicate that both mother and father attachment do not influence teenagers’ idealization about pregnancy and parenting. Mother trust had a statistically significant relationship with attitudes towards pregnancy. Trust for both mother and father also had a significant relationship with parental readiness. Alienation to mother had a significant association with teenagers preparedness to become parents. Socio-economic status was found to be associated with teenagers’ idealization of pregnancy and their report of being physically and emotionally ready to become parents. This study has found a relationship between the Trust and Alienation dimensions of attachment with attitudes towards pregnancy and parental readiness. Key words: Attachment; socio-economic status; pregnancy; idealization; parental readiness

Streszczenie:

So far little research has been done on the term bitch exclusively. The aim of this essay is to find a pattern of teenagers’ uses of the word bitch in various contexts and in different grammatical forms. A further question is whether bitch can be considered a swearword or not.

The investigation was carried out by using two different corpora which is COLT (The Bergen Corpus of London Teenage Language) and Webcorp as the primary sources out of which concordance lines were extracted. These were in turn categorized into different word classes and analyzed in detail. The results show that there were several word classes in which bitch appeared such as noun, verb and adjective and the most common word class is nouns. The results also show that teenagers mainly use the term as a swearword with which they address their peers. In conclusion even though the term bitch did not originally belong to taboo language, however, due to the fact that the word has developed a more negative meaning it can be seen a swearword.

Streszczenie:
This PhD dissertation analyses the socioeconomic inequalities in teenage motherhood considering its influencing factors and social determinants. This doctoral thesis is structured in four research papers. In paper I, we analysed how factors related to the first heterosexual experience and sexual education are associated to socioeconomic inequalities in teenage motherhood. We observed that the most important factors influencing the relationship between higher socioeconomic status and teenage motherhood were those related to the first experience of heterosexual intercourse. Paper II analysed the trends in socioeconomic inequalities in teenage motherhood and in the factors related to the first heterosexual intercourse. This study revealed that - in the past 14 years - there has been no changes in the disadvantageous socioeconomic conditions of teenage mothers and in the adverse characteristics of the first experience of heterosexual intercourse in Ecuador. Paper III described the construction of a deprivation index for the study of geographical inequalities in health in Ecuador. This ecological study showed a geographical pattern in which cantons inhabited by historically oppressed ethnic groups have the highest deprivation scores. Paper IV analysed geographical and social inequalities in adolescent birth rates (ABR) in Ecuador. This study showed a geographical pattern of high ABR in cantons from the Coastal and Amazonic region. Furthermore, a strong association was observed between high ABR and cantons with high deprivation, ethnic historical oppression and gender inequality.
