Streszczenie:
Teenage pregnancy is a well-documented problem in the United States, with approximately 890,000 teenage pregnancies occurring each year. Although teen pregnancy rates have declined since 1991, rates remain higher than the mid-1970s and are fourfold those of European countries. Substantial morbidity and social problems result from these pregnancies, affecting the mother, her children, other family members, and society. Multiple educational approaches have been used, with few demonstrating significant reductions in teen pregnancy. School-based programs have been diverse and multifaceted. Recently, programs with a comprehensive approach have shown potential for success. In this article, characteristics and elements of promising school-based programs are identified and discussed. It is imperative that school nurses play an active role in developing and implementing prevention programs that incorporate rigorous evaluation. As health educators, school nurses are in a prime position to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of teen pregnancy prevention programs.

In this paper we examine the associations between gender, family background, general cognitive ability (g), teenage career aspirations, and career attainment in mid adulthood drawing on two large representative samples of the British population born in 1958 (N = 6,474) and in 1970 (N = 5,081). A developmental-contextual model of career development is tested, using Structural Equation Modelling to map the pathways linking early experiences to adult outcomes. Results show that in both cohorts career aspirations measured at age 16 predict career attainment of cohort members in their mid 30s, even after controlling for family social background and general cognitive ability. Compared to their less ambitious peers, those with aspirations for a professional job are more likely to participate in further education, and are more likely to achieve a professional career in their adult years. Regarding gender differences in career pathways, the findings suggest that women are more ambitious in their occupational aspirations than men and more likely to participate in further education. However, despite reducing gender inequalities in attainment, social inequalities in educational and occupational opportunities remain.

ObjectivesWe aim to examine the relative contributions of pathways from middle childhood/adolescence to mid-life well-being, health and cognition, in the context of family socio-economic status (SES) at birth, educational achievement and early-adulthood SES. Our approach is largely exploratory, suspecting that the strongest mediators between childhood circumstances and mid-life physical and emotional well-being may be cognitive performance during school years, material and behavioural difficulties, and educational achievement. We also explore whether the effects of childhood circumstances on mid-life physical and emotional well-being differ between men and women.Setting/participantsData were from the National Child Development Study, a fully-representative British birth cohort sample of 17 415 people born in 1 week in 1958.Primary/secondary outcome measuresOur four primary mid-life outcome measures are: cognitive performance, physical and emotional well-being and quality of life. Our intermediate adult outcomes are early-adulthood social class and educational/vocational qualifications.ResultsUsing structural equation modelling, we explore numerous pathways through childhood and early adulthood which are significantly linked to our outcomes. We specifically examine the mediating effects of the following: cognitive ability at ages 7, 11 and 16 years; childhood psychological issues; family material difficulties at age 7 years: housing, unemployment, finance; educational/vocational qualifications and social class position at age 42 years. We find that social class at birth has a strong indirect effect on the age 50 outcomes via its influence on cognitive performance in childhood and adolescence, educational attainment and mid-life social class position, together with small direct effects on qualifications and social class position at age 42 years. Teenage cognitive performance has a strong positive effect on later physical health for women, while educational/vocational qualifications have a stronger positive effect on emotional well-being for men.ConclusionOur findings provide an understanding of the legacy of early life on multiple aspects of mid-life health, well-being, cognition and quality of life, showing stronger mediated links for men from childhood social class position to early adult social class position. The observed effect of qualifications supports those arguing that education is positively associated with subsequent cognitive functioning.

AbstractAn increasing number of people are affected worldwide by the effects of disasters, and the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has recognized the need for a radical paradigm shift in the preparedness and combat of the effects of disasters through the implementation of specific actions. At the governmental level, these actions translate into disaster and risk reduction education and activities at school. Fifteen years after the UNISDR declaration, there is a need to know if the current methods of disaster education of the teenage population enhance their knowledge, knowledge of skills in disasters, and whether there is a behavioral change which would improve their chances for survival post disaster. This multidisciplinary systematic literature review showed that the published evidence regarding enhancing the disaster-related knowledge of teenagers and the related problem solving skills and behavior is piecemeal in design, approach, and execution in spite of consensus on the detrimental effects on injury rates and survival. There is some evidence that isolated school-based intervention enhances the theoretical disaster knowledge which may also extend to practical skills; however, disaster behavioral change is not forthcoming. It seems that the best results are obtained by combining theoretical and practical activities in school, family, community, and self-education programs. There is a still a pressing need for a concerted educational drive to achieve disaster preparedness behavioral change. School leavers’ lack of knowledge, knowledge of skills, and adaptive behavioral change are detrimental to their chances of survival.CodreanuTA, CelenzaA, JacobsI. In the 1960s and 1970s there was a significant increase in juvenile delinquency in urban and rural areas. The tightening of measures to combat it did not radically change the situation, and the country’s leadership began to pay great attention to educational work, which was mainly entrusted to the Komsomol. One of the priority directions in the work of the Komsomol in this period was the organization of summer vacations for children. There was a search and testing of new forms of work, which was expressed in the creation of new types of summer camps for schoolchildren. On the basis of a wide range of archival materials, primarily reports from the departments of the school Komsomol, the process of creating camps in the city and the countryside is analyzed, and the problems that the Komsomol committees faced in the process of this work are highlighted. First of all, there is a lack of funding. It is shown that the labor and recreation camps for high school students who were striving to exist on the principles of self-sufficiency, created during this period, began to acquire great popularity. At the same time, labor, military, sports, and tourist camps for adolescents registered in the children’s room of the police began to be created. In this regard, there was a problem with training counselors for such camps. The Moscow city committee of the Komsomol was the first to begin training counselors from among student activists. The analysis of archival materials shows that regarding urban schoolchildren during the study period, various types of camps were created for all age groups. The situation was different in rural areas. For the first time, inter-collective farm camps began to appear in the districts, however, they did not become widespread.

Two recent fatal accident inquiries (FAIs) in Scotland have potentially far-reaching ramifications for educational provision across the whole of the UK. The deaths of two teenage children during the course of outdoor adventure activities led the sheriff in one of those inquiries to recommend a review of the regulatory framework which governs those activities. This call for an across-the-board review means the outdoor education sector – which includes organisations which provide outdoor education for schools groups as well as those offering more adventurous experiences for children outside term time – is now likely to face a degree of scrutiny greater than any it has experienced since the 1993 Lyme Bay disaster. This paper draws upon research interviews with those who work in outdoor education in some of the more remote areas of Scotland. The data from those interviews indicate that some of the issues that ought to be considered in any such review will not be immediately apparent from reading either the fatal accident inquiries' determinations or the literature which is available either on the Heath and Safety Executive's website or otherwise in the public domain. In particular, it appears that some issues which have only reached a wider audience by virtue of these FAIs have actually been the source of longstanding concerns among the stakeholders, dating back to the mid-1990s when the regulatory framework that came into being in the wake of Lyme Bay was still under discussion. This paper therefore uses the interviewees' responses to help develop a greater understanding of the issues that exist in this particular sector and to illustrate the legal and logistical challenges that it faces.

Background: A drop-out can be defined as a child who enrols in school but fails to complete the relevant level of the educational cycle. It is usually associated with non-enrolment and a lower percentage of girls than boys in the school system. High school dropouts are more likely to be on welfare, have poorer health, have reduced intergenerational mobility, become teenage parents, unemployed, depressed, have substance abuse problems, engage in violent behaviours, and end up incarcerated. Adolescent depression is a mental and emotional disorder affecting adolescents and teens. According to WHO, globally depression is the number one cause of illness and disability in adolescent age group. Depression increases a teen’s risk for attempting suicide by 12 times and 30% of teens with depression also develop a substance abuse problem. Objective: To find out the gender disparities in dropping out of high school students and their level of depression. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was done in Adarsha Sadar, Cumilla, Bangladesh in between January 2014 to December 2014. Study sample was 339 adolescents of 13-19 years of that area. By purposive sampling technique data were collected through a pretested, semi-structed, interview questionnaire. Back Depression Inventory scale was used to assess the level of depression. Results: Proportion of male drop out adolescent was 54% and female drop out adolescents 46%. 44.5% adolescents had depression and a positive association was found between adolescent depression and dropping out from high school. Conclusions: There is an apparent gender gap among the high school dropouts, with more male adolescents dropping out than females. A positive association was found between the high school dropouts and the development of adolescent depression. Eastern Med Coll J. Jan 2023; 8 (1), 1-5

We investigated the role of teenage everyday social ties in educational outcomes by examining the association between teenage time use and educational attainment in adulthood. The sample consisted of young people aged 10–18 from the 1979 Finnish Time Use Survey, and the same respondents’ educational attainment later in life recorded from population register data at the year of 40th birthday (n = 366 men and 393 women). We assessed the associations of time spent with the parents, on studying, leisure activities, as well as social connectedness with friends and participation in extracurricular activities, with educational outcomes. Our findings indicated that time spent with the father is positively associated with the likelihood of completing tertiary education for both daughters and sons. In particular, time spent with lower-education fathers was associated with teenagers’ future tertiary education. However, intense friendships and participation in extracurricular activities were not associated with academic achievement later in life. The findings suggest that educational attainment is partly explained by teenage time spent with the family. Less-educated fathers can enhance the attainment of higher education of their children by spending more time with their teenage children.

This article explores the educational experiences of 93 young women who experienced pregnancy at school in England, in order to examine the relationship between dislike of school, teenage pregnancy and educational disengagement. The article argues that a strong dislike of school, pre-pregnancy, is often at the root of disengagement before pregnancy, a situation often exacerbated when the news of pregnancy is met with prevailing negative attitudes within school. However, once pregnant, educational alternatives to school frequently provide a route back into, and a changed perception of education. Tackling pre-pregnancy dislike of school may have important implications for both the support and prevention aspects of the Government's teenage pregnancy strategy.

Of various means to prevent alcohol-related problems among adolescents, school-based educational approaches are very prevalent. The potential effectiveness of such programs will be limited, however, if teenage drinking is determined by factors beyond the influence of school-based interventions, such as demographic characteristics or quality of family environment. On the other hand, educational programs would have greater potential efficacy if teenage drinking is influenced mainly by factors more amenable to change, such as characteristics of individual adolescents like their alcohol expectancies or social reasoning. We evaluated in this study whether drinking among high school students was related more to factors “unchangeable” versus “changeable” by school-based intervention. We found that drinking varied with different types of “unchangeable” and “changeable” factors for male and female students. Implications for alcohol education programs are discussed.

Teenage mothers in the UK have been found to be at risk of early school leaving, low levels of educational achievement and low levels of post-compulsory educational participation. Current policy in the UK emphasizes the importance of education as a way of improving the life chances of those who become pregnant while young and, as part of that, schools are encouraged to support the educational inclusion of those who become pregnant while still of statutory school age. Drawing on repeat qualitative interviews conducted over a 15-month period, this article examines the educational experiences of a group of students in one local authority in England who became pregnant while still at school. Particular attention is paid to how different schools addressed the ‘dilemma of difference’ posed by teenage pregnancy and how school attitudes and practices enhanced or inhibited educational participation.

Abstract Using a simple model to characterize adolescents’ behavior, we show that the effect of educational Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programs on teenage pregnancy depends on the limits and conditions of the programs. The model shows that when benefits are conditional on school success or when the program has a binding duration limit, the CCT reduces teenage pregnancy rates. Using original data, we estimate this relation for two different CCT programs implemented in Bogotá, Colombia. The two programs differ in that only one of them conditions benefit renewal on school success. The empirical results are consistent with the predictions of the model. Only the program that conditions renewal of the transfer, reduces average teenage pregnancy rates. We also find that, also consistent with our model, the other program reduces teenage pregnancy rates only for those girls for which the duration limit is binding.

The article includes results of the theoretical and empirical studies of bullying among teenagers. This studies made by Russian and foreign researchers might form the basis for prevention program in educational environment and treatment programs for bullying participants. Personal characteristics of bullies, victims and witnesses define the mechanisms and content of treatment and prevention programs. Analysis of relations in the family of a teenager together with assessment of school environment, most importantly relations between teachers and other subject of educational process, are the key elements of preventive work. The main strategy of bullying prevention should be focused on changing the behavior of all subjects involved in education, mostly adults: parents and teachers, not only the teenagers. The key addressees of prevention are the teenagers who witness bullying. Bullying prevention programs in educational environment must be culturally adapted.

Background: Teenage pregnancy is a high-risk pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy often gets social sanctions in the form of stigma from the community, and the loss of school rights. Objective: The research aims to analyze the role of education in teenage pregnancy in rural Indonesia. Methods: This study analyzed the data from the Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey 2017 using a cross-sectional approach. The unit of analysis was women aged 19-24 years old. The study pooled 1,982 women as samples. Besides the education level, other independent variables analyzed were marital, employment, and wealth. In the final stage of the study, a multivariate test with binary logistic regression was carried out. Results: The results showed that women with secondary education were 0.451 times less likely to experience teenage pregnancy than women with primary education (95% CI 0.354-0.574). Higher education was 0.110 times less likely to experience teenage pregnancy than primary education (95% CI 0.070-0.171). The study found two other variables related to teenage pregnancy in rural Indonesia besides educational factors. The two variables are employment status and wealth status. Conclusion: The study concluded that education level is associated with teenage pregnancy in Indonesia's rural areas. The lower the education level, the higher the chances of experiencing teenage pregnancy.

Teenage pregnancy remains a pressing global concern, impacting public health and development on multiple fronts. This study focused on probing the specific factors contributing to teenage pregnancy in Kirumya sub-county, Bundibugyo District, in western Uganda. Its objectives centered on determining the prevalence of teenage pregnancy, identifying key contributing factors, and highlighting the challenges faced by adolescents contending with early pregnancies. Engaging fifty teenage mothers and drawing insights from ten key informants, the study employed face-to-face individual interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) for data collection. The research uncovered an alarming prevalence of teenage pregnancy, estimated at 30-40%, surpassing the national average of 25%. Several interconnected factors drove this heightened incidence, including inadequate parental guidance, limited educational opportunities for teenagers, negative cultural norms, challenging socio-economic conditions, insufficient access to youth-friendly services and contraceptives, and a dearth of supportive environments for proper child rearing and development. Furthermore, the study shed light on the significant challenges faced by teenage mothers, encompassing the weight of childcare responsibilities, parental discrimination, and a lack of spousal support. In summary, the study revealed the pronounced prevalence of teenage pregnancy in Bundibugyo District, largely stemming from social, cultural, and institutional factors. Its recommendations advocate collaborative efforts among government entities, NGOs, schools, and parents, emphasizing improved sex education, enhanced accessibility to youth-friendly services, and the establishment of comprehensive social, economic, and psychological support networks for teenage mothers navigating this intricate landscape. Keywords: teenage pregnancy, associated factors, women.

This study reviews the social implications of teenage pregnancy and identifies the factors that contribute to its incidence among adolescents aged ten to nineteen in Latin America. The review follows the PRISMA guidelines for conducting a literature review. The article search was conducted in PubMed, using keywords related to teenage pregnancy, causes, and prevention. A total of 411 articles were identified, of which 20 met the inclusion criteria: studies based in Latin America, published since 2010, and focused on the prevention of teenage pregnancy. The main results show that the lack of sexual education and ignorance about contraceptive methods are key factors in the incidence of teenage pregnancy. Socioeconomic factors such as poverty and inequality also play a significant role. Domestic violence and the early onset of sexual activity are other critical factors. Additionally, the lack of access to health services and adequate education is highlighted. Teenage pregnancy is a biopsychosocial problem with serious repercussions. It is necessary to improve sexual education and access to contraceptives to prevent teenage pregnancy. Interventions should be intersectoral, involving the family, community, educational system, and health professionals. Only through coordinated action can the incidence of teenage pregnancy be effectively reduced and its negative consequences on the health and socioeconomic development of adolescents be mitigated.

The services and incentives provided by social policies significantly affect teenage pregnancy and childbearing outcomes. Policies that offer tangible family-planning services and that improve access to and affordability of abortion have stronger, more consistent effects on teenage sexual behavior than do those that focus on changing personal attitudes and values. Higher welfare benefits may provide an incentive for pregnant teenagers to forgo marriage. Policies that improve teenagers' educational and earnings opportunities appear to contribute indirectly toward reducing teenage pregnancy and childbearing. This effect likely arises because better economic prospects lead teenagers to believe that they have something to lose by becoming parents, thus motivating them to defer having children.

The field research focused on teenage pregnancy had the general objective of sensitizing and educating the school community about the challenges associated with early pregnancy, promoting prevention, quality of life formation, and appropriate support. To achieve these objectives, the research utilized an exploratory and descriptive methodology, employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic. During the research, questionnaires and interviews were conducted to collect data on students’ knowledge about contraceptive methods, the consequences of teenage pregnancy, and the importance of family planning. Additionally, discussion groups were held to promote open dialogue about sexuality, prevention, and support for pregnant teenagers. The findings indicated significant gaps in understanding of contraceptive methods, family planning, and the implications of teenage pregnancy among the participants. Consequently, most participants expressed a need for more information and educational resources on the subject. The educational and awareness activities were well-received, and participants reported an improved understanding of the issues addressed. The research also highlighted the importance of adequate support for pregnant teenagers, emphasizing the need for emotional and social support in schools. Thus, the field research not only contributed to raising awareness about teenage pregnancy but also provided practical directions for future interventions, focusing on preventive education and support for pregnant teenagers within the school environment.

Teenage pregnancy, occurring at the age of 15-19 years, is a global public health problem with negative impacts for both mother and baby. The purpose of the study is to analyze the efforts that have been made in various countries in dealing with the impact of adolescent pregnancy to obtain strategies and recommendations that have the potential to create positive changes in handling the problem of adolescent pregnancy globally. This research method uses a literature review. The literature search process carried out in this literature review uses the database Scopus with a range of publication years 2019-2023. The search was conducted using several keywords "Teenage pregnancy" AND "impact". The findings of 10 journals show that teenage pregnancy has significant health and social impacts, including the risk of obstetric complications, high rates of maternal and infant mortality, and long-term consequences for mother and child. Factors such as low access to education, lack of knowledge about reproductive health, peer influence, and family problems trigger teenage pregnancy. The importance of a holistic approach involving collaboration between government, religious leaders, families, and educational institutions to prevent teenage pregnancy, increase knowledge of sexual education, and form positive, preventive attitudes needs to be done to reduce the risks and adverse effects associated with teenage pregnancy.

Online exchange of sexual content (“sexting”) is associated with potentially negative consequences, especially for girls. We investigated possible associations between family functioning and girls’ sexting. Italian teenage girls ( N = 250; Mage = 16.36 years; SDage = 1.88) completed online surveys that evaluated family functioning (communication, flexibility, cohesion, disengagement, chaos, enmeshment, and rigidity) and five sexting behaviors: (a) engaging in sexting, (b) sexting with a partner, (c) number of people with whom girls share sexts, (d) nonconsensual forwarding of sexts, and (e) sexting for emotion regulation. We found that engaging in sexting, sexting for emotion regulation, and the number of people with whom girls share sexts were predicted by age and low family communication. Sexting with a partner was predicted by age and high flexibility, and nonconsensual forwarding of sexts was positively predicted by enmeshment.

AbstractTeenage motherhood is a worldwide problem with 36.4 million girls giving birth before the age of 18 years in developing world. The present study investigated the relationship between attitude towards guidance and counseling programme and adjustment of re-admitted teenage mothers in selected Kenyan secondary schools. The study employed Ex-post facto Research Design. The target population of the study was 242 readmitted teenage mothers from selected schools in Ugenya Sub County. The sample size comprised 138 readmitted teenage mothers who are integrated back to school after going through the bridge center programmes and 104 readmitted teenage mothers who are integrated back to school without going through the bridge center programmes using Simple random sampling technique. The study used questionnaires for readmitted teenage mothers to collect data. Experts from the Department of Psychology and Educational Foundation in Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology ascertained the face, construct and content validity of the readmitted teenage mothers’ questionnaires. In this study internal consistency reliability of the instruments was obtained by computing Cronbach’s alpha (α) using SPSS and a co-efficient of r= 0.783 was reported. The data from questionnaires was analyzed using inferential statistics such as Pearson correlation, and Regression analysis. The findings indicated that the relationship between readmitted teenage mothers attitude towards Guidance and Counselling and adjustment was positive moderate and significant (r = .550, n=166, p<.05). The study recommended that School principals should be entrusted to provide comprehensive programs to ensure holistic adjustment of the teenage mothers in schools.
