INTRODUCTION:Several health technologies used for therapy can also be used for health enhancement. Drugs stimulating cognitive abilities are but one example. Health Technology Assessment (HTA) has not been developed for assessing enhancements. This raises the question of how HTA should address the blurred distinction between therapy and enhancement. Should we (i) carve out a distinction between therapy and enhancement and limit HTA to therapy, (ii) use HTA for both therapy and enhancement (with some modifications), or (iii) should we develop a separate health enhancement assessment (HEA)?METHODS:A literature search of the medical, philosophical, and bioethical literature was conducted for debates, arguments, and suggested solutions to the issue of therapy versus enhancement.RESULTS:The same improvement in health may be therapeutic in one patient, but an enhancement in another. Moreover, both therapy and enhancement share the same goal: increased health and wellbeing. A wide range of arguments try to establish a difference between therapy and enhancement. They refer to naturalness, rehabilitation, normality, species-typical functioning/potential, disease, sustainability, and responsibility. On closer scrutiny few of these arguments do the job in bolstering the therapy-enhancement distinction. We already use a wide range of means to extend human abilities. Moreover, the therapy-enhancement distinction raises a wide range of ethical issues that are relevant for the assessment of a number of emerging health technologies.CONCLUSIONS:Existing HTA methodology can address a wide range of non-therapeutic health enhancements. However, a series of broader issues related to the goal of health care and responsibility for altering human evolution may not be addressed within traditional HTA frameworks. Specific HEAs may therefore be helpful.

The potential spiritual impacts of AI are an under-researched ethics concern. In this theoretical essay, I introduce the established spiritual assessment tool, the Spiritual Assessment and Intervention Model (Spiritual AIM). Next, I discuss some existing and probable AI technologies, such as immersive tech and bots that have impacts on spiritual health, including the chat-bot Replika. The three core spiritual needs outlined in the Spiritual AIM are then engaged in relation to Replika—(1) meaning and direction, (2) self-worth/belonging to community, and (3) to love and be loved/reconciliation. These core spiritual needs are used to explore the potential impacts of the chat-bot Replika on human spiritual needs. I conclude that Replika may be helpful only as a supplement to address some spiritual needs but only if this chat-bot is not used to replace human contact and spiritual expertise.

The word enhancement is value laden and potentially misleading in the context of genetics. Dictionary definitions of enhance include “increase in value,” “improve,” “appreciate,” and “inflate.” The term genetic enhancement would be better replaced with a more neutral term such as “genetic manipulation” to reflect the fact that the consequences of as yet largely untried technology may be beneficial, balanced, or harmful. The aim of this paper is to highlight some of the potential negative consequences of the use of “enhancing technology” and hence to challenge whether “enhancements” are actually always enhancements. Thus it is necessary to question whether what may appear to be a new means of enhancement may not actually result in any significant change or is less effective than existing means of enhancement; may actually make things worse; or may on some measures actually make some things better, but on other measures or in other senses make things worse (either for the person being enhanced or for others).

mage enhancement has applied widely in biomedical, nondestructive testing, satellite remote sensing and other fields. Especially for the low contrast radiographic images, usually there are some disadvantages for a radiographic image such as the local area image does not show a striking contrast. In order to improve the clearness of low contrast radiographic images, in this paper we combined global adaptive equalization with local dynamic enhancement,then we simulate this enhancement algorithm. The new method will not only effectively increase the global contrast of low contrast radiographic images, but also intensify local details. Because the new algorithms contrast enhancement coefficient function can be adjusted dynamically and locally, the new algorithms are not only adaptive to the process of radiographic images but also having great reference value to the other grayscale images.

The relevance of the introduction of unmanned vehicles, the improvement of their control systems is increasing every year due to the ever-increasing volume of cargo transportation. The undoubted advantages of the developed direction are the reduction of the influence of the human factor, management errors, and, consequently, reduction of the number of accidents, as well as reduction of the transportation costs. The research was aimed to develop the algorithmic, programmatic control of an unmanned vehicle when transporting goods along a given route, in particular, when unmanned vehicles move in a convoy behind a pilot vehicle with a given distance along an arbitrary trajectory. The article discusses the control algorithm, technical means of the control system and the technical vision tracking system. The article presents the results of experimental studies of the movement of an unmanned vehicle based on a serial KamAZ 6520 vehicle.

This study identifies coping strategies to examine the behaviors adopted by team managers in addressing technostress. It evaluates the choice of coping strategies to increase performance. A study involving 3 companies and 45 respondents was conducted to identify coping strategies. However, as we chose to make a deeper interview after the first one, we continued our interviews with those who are available for 8 hours of interview, (2 hours each time); therefore we continued with 13 people. Overall, four interactional coping strategies were identified: Based on these, four new coping theories address technostress from an international perspective. This enriches the literature on coping strategies and technostress and the results explain a wide range of team managers' behaviors. Hence, it is necessary to adopt suitable policies to address effect of technostress.

Liquisolid Technology aims at solubility enhancement of such entities via cosolvency concept in a relatively minimalistic setup where there is no need of sophisticated machinery and is cost effective. It involves constituting a drug into molecular dispersion via a non-volatile solvent and then transforming it into a dry looking, free flowing compressible powder. This article aims at mapping Liquisolid Technology where its preparation techniques and potential applications are reviewed. An overview of the performance of Liquisolid in areas of dissolution enhancement, zero order release, photostability enhancement, liquipellets and its role in natural product formulations is recorded for a number of drugs. Spilanthes acmella (Asteraceae) is an endangered ornamental cum medicinal annual herb. This study reports on the effect of two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus mosseae and Acaulospora laevis) applied either alone or in combination on post-transplanting performance of micropropagated S. acmella. Complete plantlets of S. acmella were raised by direct organogenesis from nodal explants on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with various cytokinins. S. acmella plantlets responded to all three mycorrhizal treatments in a significantly different way. G. mosseae enhanced the survival rate of S. acmella plantlets to 100%. Plant height, plant spread, number of branches per plant, number of leaves per plant, leaf area, biomass production, and chlorophyll content were significantly higher in AM inoculated plantlets as compared to the uninoculated ones. This clearly demonstrates that AM inoculation improved not only the survival rate of micropropagated plantlets but also their growth and biomass yield.

Purpose To explore the impact of luxury hotel brands’ technologies on guests’ perceived value enhancement and its consequences, this study aims to examine how task–technology fit (TTF) and luxury–technology fit (LTF) affect luxury hotel guests’ perceived value enhancement, satisfaction and brand loyalty. Design/methodology/approach A scenario-based online survey was conducted with existing and potential luxury hotel guests. The relationships among TTF, LTF, value enhancement, satisfaction and loyalty were examined using partial least square structural equation modeling. Moreover, the respondents were asked their preferred service agent (human staff vs technology) in a luxury hotel to further understand luxury hotel guests’ perception toward technological services in a luxury hotel setting. Findings The results reveal that both TTF and LTF have significant impacts on the luxury hotel’s value enhancement, and the impacts of TTF and LTF on value enhancement are moderated by the guests’ technology optimism. The findings of this study suggest that the luxury hotel brands must consider the fit between the image of their brand and the technology to increase guests’ perceived value enhancement, satisfaction and loyalty. Research limitations/implications Applying categorization theory, this study extended the concept of brand extension to technology implementation. The findings advance the current understanding of how technology affects luxury hotel consumers’ perceived value enhancement, and how consumers’ optimism influences the impacts of TTF and LTF on value enhancement. Practical implications By examining the effects of TTF and LTF on luxury hotel guests’ perceived value enhancement, this study would shed light on luxury hotel brands’ technology implementation strategies. By understanding how TTF and LTF affect consumers’ perceived value enhancement, luxury hotel brands will be able to better design their technology implementation plans. Originality/value Even though luxury hotel brands are well known for offering high-level and personalized services through interpersonal interactions between employees and consumers, they have been actively implementing a variety of technologies to enhance guest experience and satisfaction. This study investigates the role of technological innovations in a luxury hotel setting. Particularly, this study examines how technologies improve guests’ perceived value of a luxury hotel and lead to satisfaction and loyalty.

The article analyzed the filling and repairing effect of ultra-fine fly ash about recycled concrete under different gradations. And obtained something by analyzing test data: ultra-fine fly ash could improve the recycled concrete workability and strength to some extent, but different gradations of the recycled concrete have different effects on strengthen. Recycled concrete strength increased by an average of about 15% after incorporation of ultra-fine fly ash. These conclusions could provide a certain reference value for the recycled concrete research and application of enhanced technology.

This paper reviews the application of intelligent vision enhancement technology in the battlefield environment and explores new research directions. This paper mainly introduces three parts. First, we introduce a solution for enhancing the battlefield situation and using head-mounted displays for soldier combat. Second, we summarize three core technologies supporting intelligent vision enhancement technology: 3D environment reconstruction, tracking and registration, and situational awareness. Third, we summarize three application directions of intelligent vision enhancement technology on the battlefield. Finally, the problems and challenges in the research work are proposed, including current issues such as accurate battlefield situational awareness by augmented reality technology, multiperson collaborative management and data flow, as well as challenges in future battlefield situation enhancement and perception. The future development trend of intelligent vision enhancement technology on the battlefield has been prospected. Two meanings of this paper are as follows: the first is to review the research status of intelligent vision enhancement technology from the technical level and identify the key technical points that may restrict development in the future; the second is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of intelligent vision enhancement technology from the level of battlefield application and the roles of users. In addition, this paper proposes how to take the lead and take initiative in future wars.

There are many disadvantages for Image enhancement with Mallat wavelet, such as huge computation, bad real time capability and difficulty to realize by hardware. To solve these problems for enhancing non flowing and discontinuous image, introducing the use of lifting wavelet with the adaptive predicting coefficient and the updating coefficient. The experiment result shows that the image enhancement based on lifting wavelet enhances the image and restrains the noise, brings better effect of image enhancement, and improves the arithmetic speed.

In October 1983, National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, as part of a yard-wide advanced technology implementation program, initiated a project to modernize its existing pipe fabrication operation. The modernization included facility enhancement and equipment acquisition, and involved the implementation of an integrated manufacturing control philosophy beginning in design and employing principles of group technology with respect to pipe fabrication. The paper summarizes the efforts associated with the pipe fabrication modernization project by tracing the facility enhancement from the initial feasibility studies to detailed shop layout and by describing the operating procedures currently being implemented in the pipe shop to support an integrated manufacturing control philosophy. An assessment of the favorable impact on productivity of the new facility and methodology is discussed as well as several facility and technology enhancements identified as appropriate steps to further improvement in pipe fabrication productivity.

Abstract Introduction Innovations in consumer sleep technologies have risen exponentially and providers struggle to keep up with patient expectations in this arena. Although there is high quality data on the validity on commercial sleep monitoring devices, there has been a rise in devices for the explicit purpose of sleep enhancement. We sought to identify existing consumer sleep devices that claim to enhance sleep, provide a comprehensive review of the main characteristics of these devices, and look into the types of evidence the developers offered to support their claims. Methods Using a scoping review framework we identified and mapped out the main characteristics of sleep enhancement devices in the consumer market. We systematically used a common search engine and the FDA database using various combinations of sleep-related search terms, such as “sleep enhancement device”. Through an iterative process, we identified and categorized devices based on the intervention target. Devices that were exclusively for clinical use and required a prescription, such as for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea or diagnosed insomnia, were excluded. Results We identified 34 sleep enhancement devices, all 34 were found via web search and one was also found in the FDA Database. We defined the following overlapping categories: reduce sleep latency (94.1%), increase restorative sleep (17.6%), and/or “other” (32.4%). About half of the devices use sound (44.1%), 26.5% use visual stimuli, and 11.8% use vibration. Additionally, roughly a third of all devices claim to entrain brain signals associated with sleep. Half of devices found operate near the bed without being in contact with the consumer, 44.1% are worn on the body, and the remaining 5.9% operate in bed, near the consumer. Conclusion For the most part, commercial sleep enhancement devices target sleep latency or claim to increase the restorative power of sleep. These devices generally use auditory, visual, and vibratory stimuli, and half are worn on the body. Lack of evidence supporting whether these devices actually improve sleep questions the utility of such devices and demonstrates the need for validation standards for consumer sleep enhancement devices.
