Streszczenie:
The history of science has a long journey. The progress of science is in line with the development of human civilization at that time. In the history of Ancient Civilizations such as Ancient Rome, Ancient Yuanani, Ancient India have given birth to very brilliant works and philosophers. The progress of science and technology today is evidence of the glory of past science. The purpose of this research is to describe the role of science in society and its development in ancient civilizations as well as the influence and contribution in the world of science today. The results showed that ancient civilizations have contributed greatly to world civilization, such as advances in science and technology, medicine, astronomy, mathematics and others. However, science in its journey experienced challenges and controversies including contradictions in religious and political beliefs but still developed to give direction to the world. And the legacy of science is a legacy of intellectual property to prepare ourselves to be more advanced in the future.

Islam has a very long history of civilizational development. Seeing islamic civilization has always been oriented towards the Eastern world. Historically, Eastern civilization has never been separated from Western civilization. In fact, it can be said that the West is the center of civilization because a large part of the development of science and technology is currently developing in the West. In the study of Occidentalism, Islamic civilization is termed the Eastern region while European civilization is termed the Western region. This study needs to be carried out to release the East from two dependencies, namely dependence on the West and also dependence on Eastern discourse oriented towards religious theology only. To achieve this, Easterners set solutions, sometimes set things and set another, and still believe in relationships between one another. In this study, we will discuss childfree in the East-West paradigm. The end result, is the equality of civilization between East and West, so as not to blame each other or feel the most right for one civilization or the phenomenon that exists, in this case regarding childfree.

The evolution of urban water management in ancient Greece begins in Crete during the Middle Bronze and the beginning of the Late Bronze Ages (ca. 2000–1500 B.C.) when many remarkable developments occurred in several stages as Minoan civilization flourished on the island. One of its salient characteristics was the architectural and hydraulic function of its water supply and sewerage systems in the Minoan Palaces and several other settlements. These technologies, though they do not give a complete picture of water supply and wastewater and storm water technologies in ancient Greece, indicate nevertheless that such technologies have been used in Greece since prehistoric times. Minoan water and wastewater technologies were diffused to the Greek mainland in the subsequent phases of Greek civilization, i.e. in the Mycenaean, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. The scope of this article is the presentation of the most characteristic forms of ancient hydraulic works and related technologies and their uses in past Greek civilizations.

A brief history of ancient water supply techniques for urban areas from the earliest civilizations through the Roman times is presented. Throughout the history of urban centers, a sufficient water supply has been the backbone of each city. All sources of water, rivers, lakes, springs, underground sources, and rainwater collection, were exploited for urban supply starting from the earliest civilizations. The specific choice was dependent upon the civilization, the geomorphology, the topography, and the local climatic and hydrological conditions. No large-scale lifting techniques were available; thus, water was transferred from the source by aqueducts from a higher altitude. Cisterns used for collection of rain water and wells for drawing groundwater were very well developed since the Bronze Age. During historical times, Greeks and later Romans reached a high level of water supply technologies that greatly influenced modern achievements in water engineering and management.

The ancient Indus civilization, also known as Harappan civilization is famous for the ruins of two ancient cities, Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa, which remained unknown for thousands of years due to little written record in human history. It was not in the 1820s, when archaeologists excavated a large number of stone tools, bronzes, seals and agricultural remains in the two cities, that the world began to learn about the secret of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappan civilization. The total number of Harappan civilization sites may be as many as 2,000, but most of them are still buried underground, awaiting further excavation. Nearly 200 sites have been excavated or are being excavated, ranging from ancient couple tombs to ancient city ruins. Mohenjo-Daro, which means "hill of death" in the local language, is an ancient city of the civilization of the Indus valley located on the right bank of the Indus River, northern Sindh province, southern Pakistan. It was built around 2500 BC and was abandoned in 1900 BC. In the sites of both cities, archaeologists discovered the advanced scientific and technological achievements of the ancient Indus civilization, but they were puzzled by the loss of the civilization. This paper starts with the introduction of the ancient Indus civilization before moves to the discovery process of Harappa and Mohendaro. Literature review on the studies on Harappa and Mohenjodaro is presented with a brief analysis in the end. After giving an outline of the civilization, the paper tries to solve the mystery of the loss of civilization, but so far no agreed understanding of the cause has been reached. By reviewing the civilizations of Harappa and Mohenjo Daro, the paper presents to readers the ancient civilizations of Pakistan and enhance their understanding of human science, technology and culture in ancient times.

The text is a response to some of the passages of the report by N.I. Lapin, which was prepared for discussion of the methodological grounds of the “Russian Civilizational Development Project” (Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences). In the continuation of the methodological searches of N.I. Lapin, the concept of the historical development of the civilization of K. Jaspers is considered in more detail in accordance with the all-human idea of A.V. Smirnov, as well as in the context of the justification of civilizational unity through the phenomenon of transversal reason (V. Welsh). Based on these ideas, the justification for the importance of constructing the unity of world civilization, which should take place not through the priority of individual cultures, countries or their associations, but on the basis of their originality, is provided. The concept of historical development of K. Jaspers allows us to conclude that the distinction of the first axial time is the formation of cultural identity, local cultural self-awareness as a result of the path of civilization to the transcendent. The second axial time tends to the formation of an all-human civilization, transversely “collecting” local cultural achievements. In modern times, the most important factor in this formation is the progress in science and technology, which determines the main paths of civilizational development. At the same time, the social and humanitarian sciences have a mission to ensure cultural dialogue and participate in the general process of discussing the current problems of our time. Globalization can be thought of as interaction, including the interaction of projects of further world development, taking into account both the unique cultural features and the history of civilizations, and their coexistence in the world as a whole.

Lu, Zhiyong. "Decorative metallic threads of Famen temple silk : their categorization, application, and technology". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/30974/.

Streszczenie:
This thesis surveys the ninth-century metallic threads decorating silks discovered at Famen temple in Shaanxi province, China. In this research, metallic threads decorating Famen silks have been studied and documented in detail in order to understand how they were produced and how they were applied. Samples of metallic threads were selected and optical microscope and SEM/EDS were used to determine their morphology and composition. Problems regarding the current terminology used to describe metallic threads are briefly considered, and a systematic renaming of different types of metallic threads is suggested. Analysis results show that most Famen metallic threads were made of gold strips without substrate wound around a fibrous core, and that very few are silver strips without substrate wound around a fibrous core. Silver strips with paper substrate wound around a fibrous core are found among Famen silks, providing very early examples of this type of metallic thread in the world. Technical evidence demonstrates that the Famen metallic strips were cut from hammered metallic foil. It was found that metallic threads of different metal composition with different physical characteristics were selected according to the decoration techniques used and the function of the silks. The use of metallic threads with different grades of evenness in dimension and morphology for different decoration techniques was also found. The gold contents of these gold threads are all very high, and the thicknesses of the gold strips are large. All these characteristics are probably related to the function of Famen silks as objects of Buddhist worship that had been donated to the temple by members of the Tang imperial family and other high-ranking people. Technical investigation into the manufacture of modern traditional Chinese metallic threads was carried out in this research. Combined with analysis of the morphological, structural, and material nature of Famen metallic threads, the key technical characteristics of modern traditional metallic threads were found, which provided important evidence for deducing the manufacturing techniques of Famen metallic threads. Successful reconstructive experiments that produced metallic threads similar to Famen metallic threads were carried out in the laboratory by the author. The use of other known related techniques to produce Famen metallic threads was eliminated on technical grounds. With the above evidence, the manufacturing of Famen metallic threads, especially how the metallic strips were wound around the fibrous core, are reasonably deduced here. By investigating a number of currently accessible Chinese historical metallic threads from other periods, the evolutionary principles of Chinese metallic threads are concluded. The special characteristics of Famen metallic threads, the reasons determining these characteristics are better understood, and their role in the development of Chinese metallic threads is assessed.

"Modern science", being both pure and applied, emerges in France at the very beginning of the second industrialization, and replaces the prior "natural philosophy". Its prestige expands through various activities: World fairs, freethinkers, popular science, arts & literature, school, patent rights. . . This practical and theoretical reorganization of knowledge , is firmly connected to the structure of industrial production: scientists study in details craftsmen's "know-how" to create reproducible procedures for manufacturing. Reputed neutral and objective, science ideologically binds the progressive base of the French Third Republic: thereafter, any opposition to environmental, technological or social changes catalysed by this new regime is treated as a dangerous attitude hiding reactionary thoughts secretly rooted in a backward political agenda. Secular resistance to sacred science is subsequently considered inaccurate and excluded from the political sphere, in the same way as the religious beliefs Galileo battled with are mocked as false. Therefore, science must not be any more considered as an epistemological question, but rather as a intrinsically contradictory institution (since it is issued from a social compromise): attempts to theorize it as unified and non-historical concept always trigger the same conflicts that prevailed to its birth

Streszczenie:
This study examines the congressional mission to liberated concentration camps in April and May 1945. General Dwight D. Eisenhower requested a congressional mission and a group of newspaper editors and publishers to view firsthand the horrors of the concentration camp Buchenwald, so that the American public might be made more aware of German atrocities in concentration camps and to dispel the belief that the atrocity reports were wartime propaganda. The congressmen and newspapermen were horrified by what they saw at the German concentration camps, and many reported back to the American public about the atrocities and conditions in the concentration camps through articles, interviews, speeches, and rallies. Upon their return to the United States, the congressmen published a report on the conditions within the camps, and many of them spoke in Congress and to the public about the need to re-educate the Germans, try guilty Germans, and rebuild Germany. The congressmen and editors and publishers brought legitimacy to the reports of American war correspondents concerning German atrocities, and their efforts contributed to constructing a political climate that allowed for and legitimized the Nuremberg Trials, the U.S. Army denazification efforts, and the rebuilding of Germany through the Marshall Plan. To examine this mission, newspaper articles from April and May 1945 were collected from thirteen American newspapers, as well as the Times of London. Research was also conducted in the personal collections of two of the congressmen who toured Europe at that time, as well as at the National Archives in College Park, MD. This study goes beyond the existing research by examining the congressional mission to Buchenwald, Dora, and Dachau, which, though it has been briefly mentioned in existing Holocaust literature, has never been fully examined.

Lu, Di Yin. "Seizing Civilization: Antiquities in Shanghai's Custody, 1949 – 1996". Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10437.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Seizing Civilization uses the Shanghai Museum as a case study to examine an extraordinary process of art appropriation that persisted from 1949 to 1996 in the People's Republic of China (PRC). At the heart of this story is the museum's destruction of the preexisting art market, its wholesale seizure of privately-owned antiquities, and its sale of these objects on the international market. My findings show that museum employees used these events to create public art collections in the PRC. The Shanghai Museum pioneered the techniques that Chinese museums use to transform craft objects, as well as select ancient paintings, ceramics, and bronzes, into canonized cultural relics. I argue that the application of these techniques explains the erasure of provenance at Chinese Museums, and demonstrate how state cultural institutions render acquisition ledgers, private collecting records, and connoisseurship disputes invisible. I examine cultural relics' transformation into Chinese cultural heritage in five chapters. I first demonstrate how museum employees appropriated private collections during nation-building campaigns such as the nationalization of industries (1956). Second, I investigate changes to the Chinese art historical canon, placing them in the context of art market takeovers, the wholesale acquisition of ethnic minority artifacts, as well as municipal programs in salvage archaeology. Then, in two chapters, I reveal the Shanghai Museum's active participation in antiquities confiscation and divestment during the Cultural Revolution (1966 – 1976), which enriched public art collections on a previously unprecedented scale. I conclude with an examination of the mass restitution of expropriated property in the 1980s and 90s, which underpinned the museum’s dual function as both a preservationist institution, as well as a political and commercial enterprise. The antiquities and events I analyze not only explain the ascendency of a dominant narrative about Chinese civilization, but also reveal the limits, contradictions, and challenges of PRC national patrimony.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThroughout history, sites of high societal values, such as temples, tombs or palaces were mainly constructed through the digging/carving of rocks, built on hills or plateaus, or through the usage of carved/cut displaced rocks. Ancient designers/engineers/workers usually chose construction sites as to facilitate the building or the carving of stones, while, at the same time, serving the purpose of the building/constructions. In Egypt, throughout the ancient Egyptian Civilization, Egyptians have chosen to carve their temples and tombs in the soft limestone, shales and sandstones that are covering most of the modern Egypt, whereas in few temples and tombs, hard igneous and metamorphic rocks were used as ornament material for tombs and statutes. In this paper, we will present an account of the development of landslide risk assessment for various cultural heritage sites around Egypt, for different eras of Egyptian history and different sites. This paper aims at discussing different case studies and success stories of landslides and block movements hazards assessment around or inside Egyptian Cultural Heritage sites.

Streszczenie:
Abstract This paper presents a historic overview of the resource and technology for exploration and the production of hydrocarbons that has literally propelled California to be the "Golden State", as well as created modern civilization as we know it today; it is difficult to imagine its elimination by fiat. Also, the paper specifically looks forward into the next challenges for the professionals charged with implementing new applied science to the current policy shift of a steady transition from carbon to the hydrogen economy while "making energy happen" for the consumer. Looking at history one sees California specifically, needs to make technically-based prudent regulatory provisions to make sure the industry is in place and ready with the flexible capacity for an "open-up" of energy in order to deliver resources absent adaptive measures such as idled standby wells or massive reserves in above ground storage. Crisis response to conditions resulting from the lack of robust adaptive infrastructure demands either a high level of capacity/inventory of essentials or a just-in-time response which draws on a large-shared pool of resource or one risks the high impact shocks to the lower quartile Californians.

Streszczenie:
The three sets of premises imply the most general hypothesis about the supreme criteria of the value of global civilization. This hypothesis can be defined more concretely, but to ignore it would be to consent to self-destruction at our own request. Such a prospect is real in a much shorter time frame than the most optimistic (in fact naive) predictions of those trusting that humans en bloc will not allow this to happen. The first set (pessimistic) contains tragic experiences from the micro to the macro scale related to both the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian aggression against Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 24, 2022; also the history of mankind, the shortest description of which contains a multi-page list of dates and names of wars. The second (optimistic) contains the wisdom recorded in the Holy Books, philosophical writings, and constantly handed down in the distinguished departments of all arts; heritage of the so-called ‘higher culture’; groundbreaking scientific discoveries related to the protection of health and life. The third one (seemingly neutral, since tools in the ethical sense are intrinsically neutral, and the way they will be used is ultimately decided by man): technology that actually enables real-time communication of the entire human population, but the effective use of this technology  while respecting the guiding criteria of universal human values  requires competent and therefore responsible coordination. The hypothesis is: survival of humans and nature in a non-degenerate form and responsibility for coming generations. The open problem is to train and elect suitable coordinators and assign them with the mission of coordinating elements that, from the micro- to the macro scale, will form a whole, worthy of the name ‘safe civilization of wisdom’ (wisdom includes responsibility). In a sense, paradoxically, it makes sense to reverse the direction from macro to micro, according to the principle of ‘the example comes from the top’.While Innovative Agonology (in fact the first experts in this new science) provides a methodological basis, many detailed methods and recommendations, it is far from pointing to a way of imminently dealing with a phenomenon that Albert North Whitehead described 97 years ago in simple terms: „significant fact of the modern world is the discovery of a method of training professionals who specialize in particular areas of thought and progressively increase the sum of knowledge within their own limited research topics.” His words justify the caution expressed above about indicating a way to deal with the phenomenon of necessary coordination, precisely in the context of the hypothesis formulated: “The tasks of coordination are left to those who lack the strength or character to be successful in a particular field”.

Streszczenie:
Considered repositories of objects(Cuno 2009), museums have been analysed through the object-oriented policies they mainly focus on. Three main purposes are often mentioned: preservation, dissemination of knowledge and access to tradition. Beyond these informative and cultural-laden functions, museums have also been labeled as theatres of power, the emphasis lying on nation-oriented policies. According to Michael F. Brown (2009: 148), the outcome of this moral standing of the nation-state is a mobilizing public sentiment in favour of the state power. We consider that the constant flow of national and international exhibitions or events that could be hosted in museums has a twofold consequence: on the one hand, a cultural dynamics due to the permanent contact with unknown objects, and on the other hand, some visibility strategies in order to attract visitors. This latter effect actually embodies a shift within the perception of museums from entities of knowledge towards leisure environments. Within this context where the concept of edutainment(Eschach 2007) seems to prevail in the non-formal way of acquiring new knowledge, contemporary virtual museums display visual information without regard to geographic location (Dahmen, Sarraf, 2009). They play ?a central role in making culture accessible to the mass audience(Carrazzino, Bergamasco 2010) by using new technologies and novel interaction paradigms. Our study will aim at analyzing the way in which civilization was e-framed in the virtual project ?A History of the World in 100 Objects, run by BBC Radio 4 and the British Museum in 2010. The British Museum won the 2011 Art Fund Prize for this innovative platform whose main content was created by the contributors (the museums and the members of the public). The chairman of the panel of judges, Michael Portillo, noted that the judges were impressed that the project used digital media in ground-breaking and novel ways to interact with audiences. The two theoretical frameworks used in our analysis are framing theories and critical discourse analysis. ?Schemata of interpretation? (Goffman 1974), frames are used by individuals to make sense of information or an occurrence, providing principles for the organization of social reality? (Hertog & McLeod 2001). Considered cultural structures with central ideas and more peripheral concepts and a set of relations that vary in strength and kind among them? (Hertog, McLeod 2001, p.141), frames rely on the selection of some aspects of a perceived reality which are made more salient in a communicating text or e-text. We will interpret this virtual museum as a hypertext which ?makes possible the assembly, retrieval, display and manipulation? (Kok 2004) of objects belonging to different cultures. The structural analysis of the virtual museum as a hypertext will focus on three orders of abstraction (Kok 2004): item, lexia, and cluster. Dividing civilization into 20 periods of time, from making us human (2,000,000 - 9000 BC) up to the world of our making (1914 - 2010 AD), the creators of the digital museum used 100 objects to make sense of the cultural realities which dominated our civilization. The History of the World in 100 Objects used images of these objects which can be considered ?as ideological and as power-laden as word (Jewitt 2008). Closely related to identities, ideologies embed those elements which provide a group legitimation, identification and cohesion. In our analysis of the 100 virtual objects framing e-civilization we will use the six categories which supply the structure of ideologies in the critical discourse analysis framework (van Dijk 2000: 69): membership, activities, goals, values/norms, position (group-relations), resources. The research questions will focus on the content of this digital museum: (1) the types of objects belonging to the 20 periods of e-civilization; (2) the salience of countries of origin for the 100 objects; (3) the salience of social practices framed in the non-formal teaching of e-civilization/culture; and on the visitors? response: (1) the types of attitudes expressed in the forum comments; (2) the types of messages visitors decoded from the analysis of the objects; (3) the (creative) value of such e-resources. Streszczenie:
Current crisis of morality in scientific and technical civilization leads us to a common ruin because modern science (which is free of morality) is inextricably linked to technology, and can therefore be called technoscience. As such, today it has a monopoly on knowledge of the world and therefore has the greatest power in history and is in tight collusion with the holders of power: the economy, politics, medicine, media, countries and multinational corporations. To have the greatest imaginable power (which, according to Kant, corrupts the freedom of mental reasoning), while being free from the morals that limit that power, means to turn the world into a world of the most modern barbarism and violence, destruction and self-destruction. Only morally responsible science is capable for future and it is the premise of a civilization capable of the future. Only responsible science can prevent science from turning into a comprehensive dogma. Therefore, science must be free from any ideology that depicts reality in black and white and thus produces vanity, hatred and violence. Global science requires a global ethos (global responsibility). Science cares about the truth that liberates us from lies and connects us into a single community. The fundamental ethical imperative primum non nocere (“first, do no harm”) is valid everywhere and forever. Ethically responsible science requires a change in the consciousness of the individual and a rediscovery of the idea of brotherhood. No human action should undermine and destroy existing reality, but rather improve it.

As an ancient civilization with a long history, China has a rich variety of unique ancient architectures. Ancient architectures as an important form of expression to carry history and art, showing a long history and cultural achievements. With the continuous development of science and technology, the traditional process of protecting ancient architecture no longer meets the needs for the successful application of digital technology to usher in the digital era, and virtual technology, in which to showcase unique advantages, Taking Ningyuan zhuang in Yongtai, Fujian Province as the research object, we analyze the user demands through Kano model and discuss in depth the advantages of applying virtual technology in the protection of ancient architectures.Virtual technology, especially 3D modeling and simulation technology, plays a key role in the protection and transformation of ancient architectures. The significant advantages of virtual technology in ancient architecture protection highlight its potential value in efficient information processing, exhaustive monitoring and preventive protection. The application of virtual technology realizes the informatization management of cultural relics and architectures and provides a scientific basis for the comprehensive protection of ancient architectures.Ningyuan zhuang, as a typical architecture of Yongtai Zhuangzhai in Fujian during the Qing Dynasties, carries rich historical memories, cultural elements and the characteristics of the southern rural defense structure, making it the focus of the study due to its profound cultural connotation and historical value. The Kano model is based on user needs and implemented through a questionnaire, identifies key areas for improvement in Ningyuan zhuang, including maintenance, signage and cultural content, along with corresponding improvement suggestions.Following the improvement direction proposed by the conclusion of the Kano model, specific measures for the application of virtual technology in the repair and improvement of ancient architectures, including 3D modeling, virtual signage and interactive exhibits. In addition, for effective publicity and cultural promotion, the study provides specific suggestions for displaying virtual images and interactive experiences to enhance the overall level of protection and visitor experience at Ningyuan zhuang. In summary, this paper takes Ningyuan zhuang as a case study, and with the help of the Kano model, proposes suggestions for the application of virtual technology in the conservation of ancient architecture through a user-centered improvement strategy, providing an experimental approach to the conservation and cultural dissemination of ancient architecture. This interdisciplinary research model holds far-reaching significance for the modernization and intelligent development in the field of ancient architecture conservation, ensuring a sustainable future for the heritage of ancient architecture.

Housing is one of the most essential needs of humanity since the beginning of existence. The discipline of architecture has emerged and developed based on this need and has continued to evolve with the advancement of civilization and technology. When looking at the history of architecture, it can be seen that the visualization of architectural design has a long history. Nowadays, with the parallel development of computer technologies, architectural visualization techniques have also greatly advanced. Virtual reality (VR) technology is used in many sectors such as education, health, and entertainment today. The discipline of architecture enables designers to visualize their designs in a realistic way. Especially in the architecture field, where isualization is very important, the use of this technology is crucial in increasing the realism of the user's experience in the design phase. VR is a developing and wide-spreading technology in the field of architecture these days. Although there are studies on this subject in literature, studies which are examining the effect of VR technology in architectural visuals on people's sense of reality and feelings about the VR experience are limited. The aim of this study is to help fill the gap in this subject of iterature. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the experience and reality sense of architectural design visuals’ aterials, light and shadow, outdoor view, indoor plants, furniture, objects, and participants’ feelings of provide through the use of virtual reality (VR). To understand today, we need to know what happened yesterday; then we can plan for tomorrow. The topic of Afrocentricity is big, all encompassing, covering all aspects of life of a people. One cannot do justice to it in a single paper; it covers all disciplines. This, therefore, can only be the first, to start a series of future papers on this emotive subject. As an inaugural paper it will present and discuss Afrocentricity from a historical perspective. It will be presented in four sections: I. Introduction: Definitions, philosophy and purpose of Afrocentricity. II. Brief History Of Africa: Origins of humanity, civilization, movements, migrations, empires and kingdoms III. Things Fall Apart: European invasion, slavery and dehumanization of the African, colonization. IV. Africa Today: Resistance, Independence, Post-colonial Africa, Decolonization and Decoloniality.

During the 2020s, key technologies will converge to completely disrupt the five foundational sectors that underpin the global economy, and with them every major industry in the world today. In information, energy, food, transportation, and materials, costs will fall by a 10x or more, while production processes an order of magnitude more efficient will use 90% fewer natural resources with 10x-100x less waste. The knock-on effects for society will be as profound as the extraordinary possibilities that emerge. For the first time in history, we could overcome poverty easily. Access to all our basic needs could become a fundamental human right. But this is just one future outcome. The alternative could see our civilization collapse into a new dark age. Which path we take depends on the choices we make, starting today. The stakes could not be higher.
