<p><em>Technology acquisitions have become an important external source of innovation. But notwithstanding the abundant literature on the topic, relatively little is known about the acquisition process itself and how it impacts acquisition performance. Some papers have used a process perspective as point of departure, but these studies focus at one component of the acquisition process and neglect to question how these different process components interact to influence acquisition performance. To address this gap, we carefully scrutinize each process component for its influence on the subsequent acquisition stages and performance. Using a case study design, we find that the decisions and managerial actions taken in the search and selection phase have an important impact on the success of implementation. We identify search and involvement of the client department as crucial mechanisms in the acquisition process and reveal their implications for the structure and composition of the team managing the acquisition.</em></p>

This paper investigates the impact of an acquirer’s experience on the acquisition of private firms (i.e., private target acquisition) in high-technology industries by analyzing a dataset of NASDAQ-listed firms operating in information technology (IT) industries. Specifically, this paper examines whether two types of experience (i.e., early venture capital (VC)-backed experience and prior mergers and acquisitions (M&A) experience) matter to the acquisition. We find that both types of experience have positive effects on private target acquisition, while only prior M&A experience positively influences public target acquisition, implying that early VC-backed experience is effective in mitigating information asymmetry related to private target acquisition and exploring opportunities for value creation. We also find that an acquirer’s growth performance and absorptive capacity prior to the acquisition enhance the positive effects of the experiences on private target acquisition.

Technology acquisition plays a key role in the management of technology in industrial organizations. While there are ample theoretical and empirical researches on firm technology acquisition which are focused on the study of its dependence on other components of organization, the literature pays less attention to explore and analyze the inter-relatedness found in the main body of technology acquisition itself. Internal and external technology acquisitions are among the main substitute modes which are embodied in the general body of firm's innovation and technology acquisition strategy. In this research, we deploy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) as a powerful structural modeling technique to identify and visualize the causalities between internal and external modes of technology acquisition by processing the collective knowledge and expertise of firms' managerial boards and senior technology experts. Then, an integrated structure could be introduced for the macro-level technology acquisition and in addition to the mathematical modeling of causalities between internal and external modes of technology acquisition, a decision support system could be presented.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine, for a sample of ten corporations in three industries (i.e. automotive suppliers, semiconductors, and computer networks), the different strategies that firms undertake when acquiring patent-protected technologies. In particular, the authors analyze and compare two alternative channels for patent acquisition: markets for technology (MFT) and merger and acquisition (M&A) processes. Design/methodology/approach The authors implement two types of analyses, at both patent and firm level. First, the authors perform an econometric analysis to evaluate whether acquired patented technologies differ in their patent bibliographic characteristics with respect to patent-protected technologies that have been developed internally by the examined firms. The authors then investigate the presence of differences in the characteristics of transacted patents acquired in the MFT or by means of M&A activities. Second, the authors take a firm-level perspective and examine the technology acquisition strategies adopted by selected companies to identify the presence of common patterns, industry-driven specificities and firm peculiarities. Findings The authors find that acquired patented technologies are, on average, more complex, of higher technical merit and the corresponding patents show a higher legal robustness. Econometric results reveal the presence of differences between M&A and MFT patents: the latter seem to protect less complex, and thus easier to trade, inventions. The analysis of the patterns of patent acquisitions at the firm level shows the presence of different strategies for the external sourcing of patented technologies, based on whether acquired patents protect core or non-core technology areas of the analyzed firms. Such patterns are discussed in the light of the different streams of the literature on intellectual property (IP) management. Originality/value This paper makes use of a new and comprehensive data set of the US patent transactions that took place between 2002 and 2010. The authors added detailed data on the evolution of the corporate trees of analyzed firms. The paper contributes to the literature on technology acquisitions and MFT by examining the different channels for patented technology acquisitions. The issue represents an emerging area of interest in the field of IP management.

Abstract The automobile industry developed very rapidly in Korea from the mid-1970s onwards. In the early stage of its development, it used both foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and technology licensing contracts to utilize advanced foreign technologies. The government mainly preferred technology licensing to FDI inflows to gain access to production technologies. A specific case of FDI is displayed in the joint venture between General Motors and Daewoo Motors. Although there were several improvements and assistances provided to the latter, its performance was relatively unsatisfactory. In contrast, Hyundai Motors relied on technology licensing, which turned out to be successful. Korea’s experience of technology acquisition in the automobile industry shows that for a developing country considering development of its own automobile industry, it would be beneficial to utilize technology licensing rather than FDI inflows.

Dynamic strain acquisition technology is becoming increasingly important in industrial production. Compared with the static strain acquisition technology,the dynamic stain acquisition technology provided a much wider range of frequencies from 0~100KHz which required a much more accurate data acquisition system. This paper proposed an accurate data acquisition system which included electric bridge、constant current source、signal amplifier and anti-aliasing filter. This system has largely suppressed noise and increased the performance of the dynamic strain acquisition.

We surveyed attitudes of decision makers involved in making decisions about technology acquisition in hospitals, receiving replies from 989 (72%) anglophone respondents and 201 (68%) from francophone respondents. Respondents split on whether to try unverified procedures, strongly agreed that medical technology should be evaluated, and expressed a desire for technology assessment data. The quality of health care, need, and compatibility with the institution's role and mission were seen as the most important factors affecting acquisitions. Our study suggests that half the battle has been won; decision makers appear convinced that technologies must be evaluated. Organizational mechanisms, however, may still be required to ensure implementation.

Abstract. In recent years, owing to the shortage of oil and gas resources and increasing difficulty in mining, traditional (wired) microseismic monitoring equipment has been unable to meet the needs of energy exploitation. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new high-precision seismic exploration and data acquisition systems. In this study, we combined advanced acquisition systems with wireless technology to develop a new wireless microseismic acquisition system. The hardware circuit of the acquisition system mainly includes a data acquisition board and a main control board. High-precision analog-to-digital conversion and digital filtering technologies are used to provide data with high signal-to-noise ratios, resolution, and fidelity to the acquisition stations. Key technologies were integrated into the ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) of the main control board: reliable GPS technology was employed to realize synchronous acquisitions among various acquisition stations, and WIFI technology was used to achieve wireless data communication between acquisition stations and the central station, thus improving the data transmission speed and accuracy. After conducting a series of evaluation tests, it was found that the system was stable, convenient to use, and had high data accuracy, therefore providing significant support for the solution to problems encountered in current oil and gas exploration processes, such as the complicated environment and inconvenient construction.

This research investigates the effects of entrepreneurial orientation and external technology acquisition on the performance of technology-based new ventures in the context of a transitional economy. An analysis of the cross-sectional data from 123 Chinese technology-based new ventures was conducted. The results of the analysis support the contention that both the acquisition of external technology and entrepreneurial orientation improve new ventures’ performance. Additionally, the interaction of entrepreneurial orientation and external technology acquisition positively moderates the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance of technology-based new ventures. Overall, this study contributes to our enhanced understanding of the complex relationship among entrepreneurial orientation, external technology acquisition and firm performance under transitional economic conditions. Firms from emerging economies, especially technologybased new ventures, may find the study findings useful in guiding their decision on external technology acquisition.
