Streszczenie:
Data science competitions are becoming increasingly popular for enterprises collecting advanced innovative solutions and allowing contestants to sharpen their data science skills. Most existing studies about data science competitions have a focus on improving task-specific data science techniques, such as algorithm design and parameter tuning. However, little effort has been made to understand the data science competition itself. To this end, in this article, we shed light on the team’s competition performance, and investigate the team’s evolving performance in the crowd-sourcing competitive innovation context. Specifically, we first acquire and construct multi-sourced datasets of various data science competitions, including the KDD Cup 2019 machine learning competition and beyond. Then, we conduct an empirical analysis to identify and quantify a rich set of features that are significantly correlated with teams’ future performances. By leveraging team’s rank as a proxy, we observe “the stronger, the stronger” rule; that is, top-ranked teams tend to keep their advantages and dominate weaker teams for the rest of the competition. Our results also confirm that teams with diversified backgrounds tend to achieve better performances. After that, we formulate the team’s future rank prediction problem and propose the Multi-Task Representation Learning (MTRL) framework to model both static features and dynamic features. Extensive experimental results on four real-world data science competitions demonstrate the team’s future performance can be well predicted by using MTRL. Finally, we envision our study will not only help competition organizers to understand the competition in a better way, but also provide strategic implications to contestants, such as guiding the team formation and designing the submission strategy.

Abstract The goal of our research was to use simulation modelling for prediction of the Croatian First Football League seasonal ranking and analyse variation in teams’ performance during a season. We have developed a model of the number of goals scored by a team in a match based on the Poisson distribution. Parameters of the model were estimated from the data on consecutive matches in a season. Variation in a team’s performance was modelled as a moving parameter estimate. The final rankings were predicted from 1000 simulation runs of the second part of the season based on parameter estimates from the first part of the season. For each team the most frequent outcome of the simulation defined the team’s rank. The method was tested on seasons 2014/15 and 2015/16. Prediction was correct for six teams in the season 2014/15 and five teams in the season 2015/16. Proposed methods enable dynamic monitoring of a team’s performance and prediction of final rankings during the season. An advantage of the prediction method is that in addition to predicting the final ranking it also estimates probabilities of alternative positions.

This study examines the interaction effects of entrepreneurial team experiences and resources on new-born startup firm performance, from a contextual view point of entrepreneurship. The sample is from a longitudinal panel data of Kauffman Firm Survey conducted over the period of 2005-2012 by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Results suggest that financial resources have positive impacts on startup firms’ profitability; whereas the impacts of initial firm size on profitability are negative. Startups are more likely to be profitable when the firm size is small at the new-born stage. The positive impact of financial resources on profitability is greater when entrepreneurial teams have strong industry experience; whereas entrepreneurial teams’ industry experience and intangible resources have a negative interaction effect on profitability. Entrepreneurial team’s startup experience has most negative interaction effects on new-born startup firms’ profitability. This finding indicates that the entrepreneurial team’s startup experience plays stronger roles in venturing profitable startups when the amount of financial resources and initial firm size are small; however, the team’s startup experience and intangible resources have positive interaction effects on new-born startups’ profitability.

Purpose – The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between gender diversity in coinventing teams and technological innovation. We reason that a diverse range of perspectives and experiences brought about through gender diversity can lead to more creative problem-solving and decision-making, resulting in more innovative outputs. Additionally, we will examine the moderating effect of the coinventors’ experiences on this relationship. Design/Methodology/Approach – This study uses detailed information from patents registered by Korean automobile companies in the USPTO between 1994 and 2019. We employ OLS regression to test our hypotheses at the team level, incorporating firm and year fixed effects and other relevant factors affecting a team’s technological output. The dependent variable, technological innovation in a team’s output, is measured using three different indicators: knowledge diversity, knowledge novelty, and broad impact. Findings – Our study finds that team-level gender diversity has a significant positive effect on technological innovation, as evidenced by all three dependent variables. We also uncovered that the positive impact of gender diversity on innovation is amplified when all team members have more experience, compared to less experienced teams. Together, these results corroborate our claims. Research Implications – Our study holds important implications for STEM fields, which form the backbone of various industries. Our research suggests that, despite traditional gender roles and stereotypes that may discourage women from pursuing careers in these fields, increasing gender diversity in R&D can bring benefits by enhancing various dimensions of technological innovation. Furthermore, our findings indicate that automobile companies can use gender diversity to drive greater innovation and gain a competitive advantage.

Abstract In the past 20 years, performance analysis in soccer has accumulated a wide variety of key performance indicators (KPI’s) aimed at reflecting a team’s strength and success. Thanks to rapidly advancing technologies and data analytics more sophisticated metrics, requiring high resolution data acquisition and big data methods, are developed. This includes many position-data-based KPI’s, which incorporate precise spatial and temporal information about every player and the ball on the field. The present study contributes to this research by performing a large-scale comparison of several metrics mainly based on player positions and passing events. Their association with team’s success (derived from goals scored) and team’s strength (estimated from pre-game betting odds) is analysed. The systematic analysis revealed relevant results for further KPI research: First, the magnitude of overall correlation coefficients was higher for relative metrics than for absolute metrics. Second, the correlation of metrics with the strength of a team is stronger than the correlation with the game success of a team. Third, correlation analysis with team strength indicated more positive associations, while correlation analysis with success is most likely confounded by the intermediate score line of a game and revealed more negative associations.

Abstract To better understand and explore the development trend of the offensive strategies of the world’s top basketball leagues, this study took NBA shooting data in the regular seasons from 2009/2010 to 2018/2019 as the samples and analysed the relationships between the shooting score ratio and game win probability, and the practical application of offensive strategies in games. The results showed that (1) increasing the number and the percentage of three-point offenses in the game can improve the probability of winning. However, too many two-point shots can affect the team’s winning probability to a certain extent. (2) The strong teams in the NBA focused more on the outside offense, while the weak teams focused more on the inside offense. (3) Statistical data further showed that whether a team’s opponent is strong or weak, taking the offensive strategy that tends toward the outside shot can lead to a higher game win probability than the offensive strategy that tends toward the inside offense.

Objective: This research investigates the effect of “critical” team members and team familiarity on team performance in the Multi-player Online Battle Arena gaming environment, League of Legends™. Background: A critical team member is any member of a team whose presence (or absence) can have a dramatic impact on the team’s ability to reach their objective, while team familiarity can be viewed as the knowledge team members have about one another and the knowledge team members have about the tasks that must be accomplished. Methods: Data visualization techniques and logistic regression is used to explore team data collected from publicly accessible sources for the online game League of Legends, which is one of the most popular games in the world. Results: The proportion of time a team’s “Carry” is incapacitated (the “critical” team member) during a given match has a direct impact on how the team performs. Conclusions: The results show that critical team positions exist on teams, and can have a significant effect on achieving the team’s goals. In addition, there is a need for the development of tools, techniques and measures to bring “Big Data” to bear in the study of teamwork. Application: This research illustrates the feasibility of exploring online gaming data for new insights into team performance.

Streszczenie:
This qualitative case study addressed the persistent achievement gaps in annual measurable objectives (AMO) data at a public rural elementary school in the Mideast United States. Response to intervention (RTI) data teams from 2010 did not produce expected student gains after 5 years of implementation in the school under study. Based on Mandinach and Jackson's data-driven decision making conceptual framework, the purpose of this study was to examine the work of the RTI data teams as they attempted to improve student learning and close achievement gaps. A purposeful sample of 13 staff members involved in the RTI implementation process was interviewed. In addition, the RTI data team and student documentation were content analyzed for process and outcomes. Open coping and thematic data analysis of the interview transcripts revealed themes of fidelity, consistency, professional development, and data use in isolation. Findings suggested that the RTI teams lack sufficient time, professional development, and the capacity to address student learning gaps adequately. As an outcome, a guiding model for designing, implementing, and evaluating ongoing blended professional development was proposed. The intent of the project is to eliminate implementation barriers and establish effective data-driven decision making practices that improve instructional practice and student learning. This study has could assist educators in their efforts to implement RTI and build organizational capacity for data-driven decision making to address persistent achievement gaps effectively.

I use SecondSpectrum play-by-play data from the 2016-2017 NBA season to assemble behavioral event data for each player. Behavioral data includes propensity to dribble/pass/shoot, and also the resulting quality of shot when players decide to shoot or make another pass. I apply a k-means clustering algorithm to cluster teams based on their starting lineup behavior data; the clusters show different team makeups within the behavioral data collected. In particular, the clustering identified pass-heavy vs dribble-heavy offenses, and good shot-decision making teams.

Streszczenie:
Agile software development teams work with several different artifacts ona daily basis, and by interacting with these artifacts users are involvedin work related experiences. By revisiting these experiences and reflectingupon them, users can evaluate and improve how they solve everyday workingtasks. Boud et.al defines reflection as a process where the experience is revis-ited, feelings are re-attended and the experience is re-evaluated[Boud et al.,1985]. Furthermore work and reflection on work are shown to be stronglyconnected[Schön, 1983][Chaiklin and Lave, 1993]. Reflecting on work ex-periences give a better understanding of the experience itself, allowing forconclusions and lessons learned to be made. Reflection transforms experi-ence into knowledge which can be applied to solve challenges in the everydayworking environment. The main focus of this thesis was to develop a technological tool to collectproject artifacts and connect these to work experiences, in order to enhancereflection both individually and collaboratively in agile software developmentteams. The tool was developed using a daily delivery cycle. Design choiceswere made on the basis of available theory, literature and related tools con-cerning reflection and agile development. Three evaluations were conducted;A usability study, an expert review with an expert in the field of agile soft-ware development and a focus group evaluation consisting of eight softwaredevelopers working in an agile team. The work conducted resulted in a Grails web-application, where usersconnect their daily experiences with project artifacts collected from a Version-control system. These daily reflection notes can be used both individuallyand collaboratively in a team as preparation for agile retrospective sessions. The tool continuously collects work-related project artifacts and presentsthese in order for users to revisit their work that day. The application aimsto trigger reflection on user experiences and storing the outcome in notes forlater use and sharing. This thesis, the developed tool and its evaluation contributes with an in-creased understanding of how reflection in agile software development teamscan be improved, by connecting experiences with work related project arti-facts.

Streszczenie:
Among the diverse perspectives of value creation throughout history, recent studies imply that CFOs and finance officials can contribute to a holistic value creation process by integrating different business values. Therefore, this study aims to research whether the current dilemma of intangible assets (customer data) plays an important role in financial activities to lead to business value creation. The literature review highlights three independent variables; customer loyalty, decision-making, and predicting that are tested for an effect on the dependent variable value creation. Additionally, previous studies highlight data as efficiently utilized in cross-functional environments. A moderating variable cross-functional teams is thereby examined if it has a moderating effect. An online questionnaire was sent to 56 companies who were interested in participating, of which eventually 42 companies responded. Given the low response rate, the results revealed that decision-making was significant and valuable for the finance department’s value creation. However, the moderating effect significantly revealed, on the contrary, to strengthen predicting capabilities for the finance department to create value.

Videonasendoscopy and videofluoroscopy are two instruments used by craniofacial teams for assessing velopharyngeal function. Various methods have been proposed throughout the literature for collecting and reporting data from these two types of imaging studies. The purpose of this investigation is to survey craniofacial teams regarding current use of videonasendoscopy and videofluoroscopy in the clinical setting. The results show the videonasendoscopy is more frequently used than videofluoroscopy and that estimations are a more common data collection/reporting method than objective measurements. The data also show that a wide variety of methods are currently in use and only a small number of teams use the standardizing method proposed by the international working group (Golding-Kushner, et al., 1990).

Spotify started to use the cloud-based data warehouse BigQuery in 2016 with a business model of pay-as-you-go. Since then, usage has increased rapidly in volume and amount of users across the organisation which is a result of ease of use compared to previous data warehouse solutions. The technology procurement team lacks an overview of how BigQuery is used across Spotify and a strategy of how to maintain an environment where users make cost informed decisions when designing queries and creating tables. Incidents resulting in unexpected high bills are currently handled by a capacity analyst using billing data which is lacking the granularity of how cost maps to the users of BigQuery. The objective of this research is to provide recommendations on how audit data can enable a data driven cost-effective environment for BigQuery across the matrix formed engineering organisation at Spotify. First an overview of the current usage patterns is presented based on audit data which is modeled with regards to volume, complexity and utilization. Different patterns are identified using K-means clustering, including high-volume consuming squads and underutilized tables. Secondly, recommendations on transparency of audit data for cost-effectiveness are based on insights from cluster analysis, interviews and characteristics of organisation structure. Recommendations include transparency of data consumption to producers to prevent paying for unused resources and transparency to consumers on usage patterns to avoid paying for unexpected bills. Usage growth is recommended to be presented to the technology procurement squad which enables better understanding and mitigates challenges on cost forecasting and control.

Researchers have shown that effective use of student data by teachers can inform teaching practice, leading to improved outcomes on standardized tests. In order to improve declining test scores at the middle school under study, professional development on the use of data teams was implemented. However, a year after implementation, teachers were still not utilizing data within their professional learning communities (PLC) effectively or at all. This qualitative case study addressed the problem of the need for teachers to use data more effectively. The conceptual framework of the study was based on the models of PLCs by DuFour and of data teams by Love. The research questions addressed how teachers perceived and used data in their PLCs in order to improve instruction. Qualitative data were collected from individual interviews with 7 teachers, observations of 8 PLC meetings, and review of PLC documents. Triangulation and member checking were used to bolster trustworthiness of interpretations. The data analysis led to 4 common themes: teachers felt they were forced to use data, had excessive responsibilities within PLCs, were busy with other required tasks, and needed more training on data use. The findings led to the design of a 5-day professional development series on data teams to be implemented at the middle school. This study has the potential to increase teacher capacity in using student data to inform instruction and to improve student achievement at the local school and district levels.

For manufacturing firms, having knowledge about customers is very important, in particular for the developers and designers of new products. A way in which software can help to build an information channel between the customers and the firm is through Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions. Customers’ data are captured into the Customer Relationship Management solution while Business Intelligence analyses them and provide clear processed information to the developers and designers of new products. In this study we have researched if this process occurs in the industry, if and how it can be improved and what advantages it could bring to manufacturing firms. We have carried out the data collection by interviewing experts in four companies, three software companies that provide Business Intelligence solutions and one manufacturing firm. We found out that those software solutions are not used to directly connect developers and designers to customers’ data, and that there are no specific technical obstacles that prevents this, if not managerial reasons rooted in everyday practice. We also uncovered facts that would help to make this process more efficient and make customers’ data even more relevant to development.

Streszczenie:
The reliance on concepts derived from observations in laboratories combined with the assumption that concepts and behavior are one-to-one (monism) have impeded the development of social science, machine learning (ML) and belief logics by restricting them to operate in controlled and stable contexts. Even in open contexts, using ideas developed in laboratories, despite using well-trained observers to make predictions about the likelihood of outcomes in open contexts, using the same concepts and assumptions, in 2016, Tetlock and Gardner's "superforecasters" failed to predict Brexit (Britain’s exit from the European Union) or Trump’s presidency. Similarly, in 2022, using traditional techniques, the CIA's expert observers and the Russian military planners both mis-judged the Ukranian people by claiming that Russia's army would easily defeat Ukraine. Providing support for overturning these concepts and assumptions, however, in 2021, the National Academy of Sciences made two claims with which we fully support. First, the Academy had warned that controlled contexts are insufficient to produce operational autonomous systems. We agree; by studying real-world contexts, we have concluded that the data derived from states of social interdependence not only create data dependency, but also that interdependence is the missing ingredient necessary for autonomy. Second, a team’s data dependency increases by reducing its internal degrees of freedom, thereby reducing its structural entropy production; this situation of heightened interdependence explains the Academy's second claim that the “performance of a team is not decomposable to, or an aggregation of, individual performances,” consequently providing corrobration for our new discipline of data dependency. We extend the Academy’s claims by asserting that the reduction of entropy production in a team’s structure (SEP), indicating the fittedness among team members, represents a tradeoff with a team’s performance, reflected by a team’s achievement of maximum entropy production (MEP).

Our work is investigating the role of team conflict in the context of student design project work. We are interested in the types of conflicts that occur during the team’s development of their design solution, and how these conflicts may in fact contribute in a positive way to the overall design solution. We are using a mixed-method approach to data collection through student interviews, team observations, reflective memos, and surveys. This paper reports results from a study implemented in a required first-year engineering design course. Results from this study indicate that teams experience a range of conflicts, where some students perceive these conflicts as beneficial to team performance. In addition, our results describe several strategies teams use to manage and leverage these conflicts. Finally, methodologically we found that the team memos and team conflict surveys were better instruments for capturing team conflict, more so than self-report surveys.

In design, as with many fields, the bases of decisions are generally not formally modeled but only talked or written about. The research problem addressed in this paper revolves around the problem of modeling the direct evaluation of design alternatives and their attributes as they are realized in linguistic communication. The question is what types of linguistic data provide the most reliable linguistic displays of preference and utility. The paper compares two formal methods for assessing a design team’s preferences for alternatives based on the team’s discussion: APPRAISAL and Preferential Probabilities from Transcripts (PPT). Results suggest that the two methods are comparable in their assessment of preferences. This paper also examines the nature of consistency in the way design teams consider the attributes of a design. Findings suggest that assessment of an attribute can change substantially over time.

Many design problems are too difficult to solve all at once; therefore, design teams often decompose these problems into more manageable subproblems. While there has been much interest in engineering design teams, no standard method has been developed to understand how teams solve design problems. This paper describes a method for analyzing a team’s design activities and identifying the subproblems that they considered. This method uses both qualitative and quantitative techniques; in particular, it uses association rule learning to group variables into subproblems. We used the method on data from ten teams who redesigned a manufacturing facility. This approach provides researchers with a clear structure for using observational data to identify the problem decomposition patterns of human designers.

Due to its focus in project-based learning, design educators must provide individual coaching and mentoring of student teams as they progress through their design efforts. In order to increase the quantity and quality of design mentoring, the authors have implemented the use of Wiki websites as a medium for providing formative assessment for student design teams enrolled in a sophomore-level Mechanical Engineering design course. Wiki websites, which allow for easy creation and editing of interlinked webpages, were created for each design team in order to provide a virtual space for the creation, compilation, and editing of their design project report submissions. With access to each team’s Wiki site, the mentor is able to observe each team’s product design process unfold and provide feedback using an embedded commenting system. The public presentation of design reports also affords the facilitation of a peer-review of student work. In this paper the authors present details of the implementation of a Wiki for preliminary assessment data for this tool. Results show that the students found the tool and the associated activities to be easy to use, helpful in developing better design reports and a contributing factor to their development of critical and analytical thinking skills. In addition, students who used the tool reported receiving more meaningful formative feedback from the instructor and reported giving more formative feedback to their peers when compared to other sections of the class that were not using the Wiki.

Abstract Design team decision-making underpins all activities in the design process. Simultaneously, goal alignment within design teams has been shown to be essential to the success of team activities, including engineering design. However, the relationship between goal alignment and design team decision-making remains unclear. In this exploratory work, we analyze six student design teams’ decision-making strategies underlying 90 selections of design methods over the course of a human-centered design project. We simultaneously examine how well each design team’s goals are aligned in terms of their perception of shared goals and their awareness of team members’ personal goals at the midpoint and end of the design process, along with three other factors underpinning team alignment at the midpoint. We report three preliminary findings about how team goal alignment and goal awareness influence team decision-making strategy that, while lacking consistent significance, invite further research. First, we observe that a decrease in awareness of team members’ personal goals may lead student teams to use a different distribution of decision-making strategies in design than teams whose awareness stays constant or increases. Second, we find that student teams exhibiting lower overall goal alignment scores appear to more frequently use agent-driven decision-making strategies, while student teams with higher overall goal alignment scores appear to more frequently use process-driven decision-making strategies. Third, we find that while student team alignment appears to influence agent- and process-driven strategy selection, its effect on outcome-driven selection is less conclusive. While grounded in student data, these findings provide a starting place for further inquiry into of designerly behavior at the nexus of teaming and design decision-making.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Psychological safety and turn-taking have both been listed as key factors needed for collaboration in teams to emerge. Specifically, prior work has shown that increased communication in teams can lead to high psychological safety. Prior work on turn-taking as a measure of communication has mostly focused on its inclusivity in a team rather than its frequency. While the gender composition of the team can impact both participation as well as team psychological safety, there is a lack of research at the individual level. As such, this study provides the first attempt at connecting turn-taking, gender, and psychological safety through the analysis of members of fifteen engineering design student teams during the concept generation stage of their project. Specifically, we gathered video data to study how the number of turns and self-turns in a team impact psychological safety at both the individual and the team levels. We also examined how gender impacts participation and individual perceptions of psychological safety. The results found that turns and self-turns have a significant positive impact on an individual’s perception of the team’s psychological safety. However, no such relationship was found at the team level, indicating that there may be additional underlying factors in team level psychological safety. While we found that gender did not impact individual turn-taking, it did affect an individual’s perception of their psychological safety. These results provide quantitative evidence of the role of team communication on psychological safety.

New technological developments are changing how the product design community communicates in the workplace and in the classroom. Slack, an online communication application with some project management features, has become a popular communication tool among many workers and students. This paper examines the Slack conversation conducted by 16 student product development teams in a course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 2.009: Product Engineering Processes. Following a typical product development process, co-located teams of 17–20 students each used the online communication tool in addition to face-to-face meetings to design new products in one semester. The resulting conversations were analyzed for message count over the course of the semester, message count by day of the week and hour of the day, message count by user, and communication organization. It was observed that teams tended to increase their communication right before deadlines and decrease it right after. When viewing teams’ communication patterns by day of the week and the hour of the day, it was seen that many teams increased their communication in a short period after team meetings. In both of these cases, successful teams tended to have more consistent communication. There was little correlation (R2 = 2186) between the number of hours teams reported working on the class and their Slack activity by day. When looking at a team’s total volume of communication, high volumes may indicate team members are working well, but it may also indicate they are struggling. Teams with higher levels of success tended to have more organized communication structures than teams with lower levels of success, as assessed by instructors. In addition to the data collected in this work, further research is still needed to understand with more certainty how online communication patterns correlate to teams’ levels of success or team behaviors.

"In this Research Insights paper, we challenge the assumption that team members perceive similar levels of psychological safety and consider how different patterns of psychological safety matter for team effectiveness. Based on data from 278 intact senior leadership teams, our results provide three key insights: More than half (62%) of senior leadership teams in our sample demonstrated significant variability around their team’s psychological safety. We identified six prototypical patterns of psychological safety among teams, with only one representing a shared view of psychological safety. Other patterns represented dissenting views of greater or less psychological safety. Patterns of psychological safety matter for team effectiveness. Teams whose members report greater agreement around psychological safety exhibit some of the highest levels of performance and lowest levels of interpersonal conflict. Based on these findings, we consider important implications for how leaders can cultivate psychological safety in their teams."

Streszczenie:
In 2018, a team of University of Sussex undergraduate law students working under the supervision of academic staff, conducted the Migration Law Clinic Pilot Study. This was in response to growing and grave concerns about the lack of availability of legal support and services for those seeking asylum and other forms of leave to remain in the UK. These concerns have only heightened in the intervening period: most recently, in response to the government’s publication of a draft Bill of Rights to repeal and replace the Human Rights Act 1998, which would make it much more difficult for potential deportees to rely on Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to prevent removal and might have a wider impact on the rights and status of vulnerable groups of migrants in the UK; and, among other initiatives, the government’s intention to involuntarily relocate asylum seekers to Rwanda, which will then be responsible for processing the asylum claim and for providing asylum in successful cases. The purposes of the study were: i) To better understand some of the challenges faced by asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants living in Brighton and Hove when applying for asylum, and other forms of leave to remain and leave to enter. ii) To identify the extent and reasons for any shortfall in cost-free immigration and asylum law advice and representation in Brighton and Hove. iii) To gauge whether there was demand for additional free legal advice in the form of a university law clinic, specialising in immigration and asylum law. The team undertook a review of the legal framework that governs the provision of legal aid for immigration and asylum law matters and of relevant academic commentary on its impact. The team also gathered new empirical data based on interviews with a range of local stakeholders. This report sets out the team’s findings, describes how it informed the development of the clinic, and makes recommendations both for the further development of the Clinic and for changes to the provision of legal aid. Finally, it offers advice to other universities contemplating setting up their own clinic in this area.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) construction projects have multiple stakeholders that collaborate with project delivery team members during the execution of these projects. Many of these stakeholders are located across the U.S., which makes virtual interactions a common communication method for these teams. These interactions often lack spatial visualization, which can add complications to the progress reports provided and how the information is received/interpreted. The visualization of project progress and documents would be invaluable to the stakeholders on critical projects constructed by the USACE. This research was conducted to determine alternatives for migrating Resident Management System (RMS) data into a portal web viewer. This report provides proposed solutions to creating these links in efforts to better harmonize data management and improve project presentation.

This paper describes the development and testing of a novel approach to evaluating development interventions – the POInT approach. The authors used Bayesian causal modelling to integrate process and outcome data to generate insights about all aspects of the theory of change, including outcomes, mechanisms, mediators and moderators. They partnered with two teams who had evaluated or were evaluating complex development interventions: The UPAVAN team had evaluated a nutrition-sensitive agriculture intervention in Odisha, India, and the DIG team was in the process of evaluating a disability-inclusive poverty graduation intervention in Uganda. The partner teams’ theory of change were adapted into a formal causal model, depicted as a directed acyclic graph (DAG). The DAG was specified in the statistical software R, using the CausalQueries package, having extended the package to handle large models. Using a novel prior elicitation strategy to elicit beliefs over many more parameters than has previously been possible, the partner teams’ beliefs about the nature and strength of causal links in the causal model (priors) were elicited and combined into a single set of shared prior beliefs. The model was updated on data alone as well as on data plus priors to generate posterior models under different assumptions. Finally, the prior and posterior models were queried to learn about estimates of interest, and the relative role of prior beliefs and data in the combined analysis.
