Streszczenie:
This paper examines imperativeness of Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria on Teaching Professionalism of Teachers in Secondary Schools. Teacher Registration Council act as for reaching implication for the teaching profession in post primary education in Nigeria contributed meaningfully to the teaching and learning of the students. However, this reality can be appreciated by the fact the content of the TRCN Act is one and control with the contents of the Acts that established the council regulates the teaching. Presently, it is compulsory for all qualified and trained teachers to belong to the members after participated in examination and passed the examination. Yet, anyone of the teacher who does not belong to their member is not qualified to teach especially public in secondary schools in Nigeria. In addition, TRCN improves teaching in all pubic secondary schools in Nigeria. Similarly, it also improves the academic performance of students. yet, it creates room for only qualified, trained and intelligent teachers in all secondary schools. Undoubtedly, Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria make the teaching as professionalism like other fields in Nigeria. Consequently, it does not create room for non – qualified teachers to teach the students in all public secondary in Nigeria.

There are several teaching styles in the literature that have been traditionally used in the teaching of Building structures to students of Architecture. Nevertheless, they have all been streamlined into two styles: didactic and interactive styles of teaching and upon these that the assessment of this study was based. This study assessed styles of teaching Building structure courses to Architecture students in Southwestern Nigerian public Universities, with a view to improving the performance of the students in these courses. Quantitative research approach was adopted and employed descriptive survey. The principal survey techniques used was questionnaire. Five public universities approved by the National Universities Commission and Architects Registration Council of Nigeria were purposively sampled. A total of 702 questionnaires were administered to all the pre-final and final year students in the Department of Architecture of the sampled universities, while only 541 questionnaires were adequately completed and considered fit for analysis. Cross tabulation with chi-square was used to summarize the data. The study revealed that the teachers were using both didactic and interactive teaching styles. The conclusion here was that the teachers were not using interactive teaching styles fully in teaching the courses to students which led to poor performance of students in the courses. Therefore, the study recommended that strong priority should be given to the quality of teaching by using interactive teaching style only in the teaching of Building structures.

The recruitment process of employees and teachers in the Primary and Secondary Education Council has been going on for a long time. It has entered the IX process with a registration pattern of two to three times yearly. The problem in the Primary and Secondary Education Council (Dikdasmen) of the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PDM) of Sleman Region is that an information system is needed to serve the registration process quickly and efficiently for the registration process of teachers and employees. PDM Sleman District is a Muhammadiyah assembly whose active activities meet the human resource needs of every Muhammadiyah school in the Sleman area. In fulfilling the needs of employee registration as teachers or employees, challenges are needed for an online recruitment information system for the data entry process, formation of registrant needs, and management process for assessment with accepted status or vice versa. The current problem is that the built recruitment information system still depends on the hosting pattern as needed when the registration period is held. The information system will be turned off again and archived on the local server periodically. The solution offered is purchasing a domain and hosting and installing and setting up a recruitment information system that can be accessed with complete management needs features. It can be managed independently by the PDM Sleman admin. The expected target is independence in controlling recruitment information systems with website menu features that can operate from upstream (registration process) to downstream (verification/selection process and announcement.

Information technology is the new face of the World system from which comes the legal education system and it is well in sync with the present generation of students in this new information age. Law teachers and students are gradually catching up with this new innovation with the introduction of clinical legal education in most of the law faculties in Nigeria. Also, the incorporation of the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) into the Nigerian Universities System, and the mandatory implementation of the clinical legal education in Nigerian law faculties are strong indications that the law faculties in Nigeria are open to innovations and technology in their teaching methodologies. The paper explains the regulatory reforms introduced by the National Universities Commission and the Council of Legal Education which are paradigm shift from the traditional teaching methods to students’ friendly modern learning approach. The paper concludes that law teachers are also in need of training as the teachers cannot impart the skills they do not possess. The paper, therefore, recommends that the Council of Legal Education should work together with the National Universities Commission for proper implementation of the new teaching innovations in Nigeria.

This paper investigates digital preservation challenges in Nigerian libraries. In carrying out this study four research questions were posed. The study sample population comprised of 172 participants at the 2nd Conference of Certified Librarians from various libraries and institutions across Nigeria, organised by the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) in Abuja on the 11th – 16th October, 2015. The outcome of the study revealed that digital preservation challenges persist despite the awareness of digital preservation strategies by librarians in Nigerian libraries. The findings revealed major challenges facing digital preservation, such as hardware and software obsolesces, lack of training, lack of backup and standards, lack of strategy policy, lack of funds, lukewarm attitude among the librarians and lack of legal right to preservation of content. Recommendations were made to protect and safeguard digital preservation challenges in the libraries, including the recommendation that the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN), University management and Library stakeholders should create a standard policy, provide needed skills for the librarians, lobby government for more funds and ensure that funds allocated to the libraries are properly utilised for effective digitization of library resources for future use.

An academic, Peter Dinniss, discussed the then emerging issue of professionalism in the early childhood education sector in 1974. “There has been much debate over the term ['professional'] together with discussion as to whether teaching is a profession” (1974: 11). On the cusp of the 21st century, the Education Council (now renamed Teaching Council) of New Zealand consulted with teachers on their register about a professional code. This article follows the emergence of the professionalism discourse. I examine traces of the ‘strategies, tactics and procedures’ in a genealogy of the managerial technicist process of education. My interest lies in emergent ‘responsibilization’ of teachers over the period. I examine the power/knowledge of the ‘profession’ in Aotearoa, New Zealand, as teachers invent and govern themselves. I ask if the Council’s discourse of professionalism through registration of individuals can be re-envisioned through the collective and democratic practices evident in parent-led services.

This study assessed multiple-choice construction competence among public junior secondary school teachers in Edo Central Senatorial District, Nigeria. Two research questions were raised and one hypothesis was formulated and tested. This study adopted the descriptive study design. The population of the study covers the six hundred and sixteen (616) Secondary School teachers in all the 69 public secondary schools in Edo Central Senatorial District. The simple random sampling technique was used to select 125 subject head teachers who were drawn as the representative sample to measure teachers’ competence. These subject head teachers cover language subject head teachers, Science subject head teachers, and Art subject head teachers in schools. These subject teachers were draw using purposive sampling because they are like supervising teachers who work hand in hand with the management and school principals on administrative and management related duties. The instrument used was a 20-item survey questionnaire adapted from the work of Kissi (2020). The instrument was used to measure multiple-choice construction competencies and items’ quality among teachers. The test-retest reliability coefficient produced an r-value of 0.74 which shows that the instrument is reliable. Research question 1 was analyzed using mean () while the independent t-test for two sample means was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that the level of multiple-choice construction competence among public junior secondary school teachers in Edo Central Senatorial District, Nigeria is low and female teachers had higher level of multiple-choice construction competencies than male teachers in secondary schools in the district. It was concluded that sex differences in favour of female teachers, exist in teachers’ multiple-choice construction competencies. It was recommended that the district education administrators from the Local Government Education Council Authorities should place more emphasis on exposing classroom teachers on more practical ways of constructing multiple-choice items especially on how to effectively handle items‟ alternatives. This can be achieved through workshops, or training in test construction.

Considering the position of the English Language as the medium of instruction in Nigeria and the role played by the teachers using the language in classroom instruction, this paper saw it significant to observe the Strengthening Teachers’ English Proficiency (STEP) course as introduced in Jigawa State by the British Council to improve teachers' English Language proficiency through self-study. Doing so is expected to enhance and provide a better learning outcome. The paper supported its views with the self-direct and andragogy approaches to adult learning as the basis for self-study which is believed to be compatible with teachers and teaching. The paper, therefore, tried to highlight the factors that may hinder the success of the programme. The paper stated that time, the commitment of the teachers and the other stakeholders in the state, financial issues and societal attitudes to the use of the English Language could be the challenges to this effort. As a point of concern, the paper suggested that the government, through the Ministry of Education should try to adapt and produce such materials used in the STEP programme and distribute them to teachers, especially those who did not attend the British Council’s training. Similar training should also be carried out on regular basis to help teachers embrace using the language frequently in their classes.

Healthy environment is important for the well-being of mankind and environmental factors play a crucial role in the spread of diseases, especially in the 21st century. Environmental health officers are stakeholders in this regard and in the sustainable development goals. This paper discussed the interplay between the environment and health, the importance of environmental officers in Nigeria and factors that influence their activities. A narrative review was carried out using secondary data from various databases and organizational websites. In Nigeria, an environmental health officer must be registered with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) in line with Act 11, of 2002 and requires investigative, analytical, communicative and educational skills, among others to function effectively. They are important stakeholders in environmental issues with roles in sanitary inspection of premises, prevention and control of diseases, disasters, antimicrobial resistance, food hygiene and safety, ecological health, planetary health and environmental impact assessment, among others. The challenges they face during their work include lack of enabling laws to deter defaulters, shortage of manpower, poor knowledge and access to various standardized tools, among others. The role of environmental health officers cannot be over-emphasized, especially in this 21st century. However, these professionals need to think outside the ‘box’ to address arising challenges.

Attempts to ensure safety and quality control in the Day-Old Chicks (DOCs) value chain in Nigeria have been perceived to involve some duplicity/multiplicity of roles and/ or responsibilities, putting undue burden on the actors. Therefore, experts’ workshop on the DOCs value chain in Oyo State was implemented by the Innovation Lab for Policy Leadership in Agriculture and Food Security (PiLAF) to provide a guide for agenda setting for building a better industry. The workshop had the dual purpose of (i) undertaking a situational analysis of the DOCs value chain in Oyo State, Nigeria, and (ii) strengthening the policy process to effectively respond to the needs of the DOCs value chain in the state through clearly defined, unambiguous regulations and regulatory processes. Twenty-four experts comprising major actors along the DOCs value chain in Oyo State participated in the workshop. Using brainstorming and consensus building process, participants identified infrastructure and markets (strengths), weak regulatory control and high operating cost (weaknesses); supply gap, and good return on investment (opportunities); including adulteration and sharp practices (threats) as the most important Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) factors influencing or capable of affecting the DOCs industry in the state. The DOCs value chain operators identified National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) followed by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria as the most visible operators in the DOCs value chain. However, the operators perceived the activities of the regulatory bodies as more geared toward revenue generation than actually enforcing compliance to standard practices in the industry. The value chain actors affirm there are overlaps in some aspects of policy guidelines for the DOCs value chain by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria and NIAS leading to what may be described as double taxation to the disadvantage of the actors. Specifically, registration and licensing, prohibition, and import and export domains are some of the aspects of the policy documents that need some minor modifications for clarity and separation of roles. This paper investigates the prospects in the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction in Nigeria’s primary level of education. With the multilingual nature of Nigeria, many scholars have continued to clamour for the use of indigenous languages as a medium of instruction in Nigeria’s primary schools. This paper also seeks to justify the reasons why mother tongue education may not be feasible in the nearest future especially with the numerous roles that the English language plays in Nigeria, and the myriads of difficulties which constitute stumbling blocks to its realization. In doing this, two research questions were generated, and data collected from 150 primary school teachers, from both private and public primary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) through purposive sampling technique. The instrument for data collection is a well-structured questionnaire. The questionnaire is made up of two sections, sections A and B. Section A sought for demographic data of respondents, while section B sought for information on the factors militating against mother tongue as a medium of instruction in primary schools in Nigeria. The data collected were analyzed using Crombatch Alpha, mean and standard deviation. The result of the analysis revealed that the multilingual nature of Nigeria, and lack of names of instructional materials and science equipment in the indigenous languages are impediments to the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction in Nigerian primary level of education.

IntroductionPalliative care is a clinically and cost‐effective component of cancer services in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Despite the significant need for palliative cancer care in SSA, coverage remains inadequate. The exploration of digital health approaches could support increases in the quality and reach of palliative cancer care services in SSA. However, there is currently a lack of any theoretical underpinning or data to understand stakeholder drivers for digital health components in this context. This project addresses this gap through engaging with key stakeholders to determine data and information needs that could be supported through digital health interventions. Methods and analysisThis is a multicountry, cross-sectional, qualitative study conducted in Nigeria, Uganda and Zimbabwe. In-depth interviews will be conducted in patients with advanced cancer (n=20), caregivers (n=15), health professionals (n=20) and policy-makers (n=10) in each of the three participating countries. Data from a total of 195 interviews will transcribed verbatim and translated into English before being imported into NVivo software for deductive framework analysis. The analysis will seek to understand the acceptability and define mechanisms of patient-level data capture and usage via digital technologies.Ethics and disseminationEthics approvals have been obtained from the Institutional Review Boards of University of Leeds (Ref: MREC 18–032), Research Council of Zimbabwe (Ref: 03507), Medical Research Council of Zimbabwe (Ref: MRCZ/A/2421), Uganda Cancer Institute (Ref: 19–2018), Uganda National Council of Science and Technology (Ref: HS325ES) and College of Medicine University of Lagos (Ref: HREC/15/04/2015). The project seeks to determine optimal mechanisms for the design and development of subsequent digital health interventions to support development, access to, and delivery of palliative cancer care in SSA. Housing has become a major concern in Nigeria and requires sustainable intervention. The United Nations' position on the advantages of Interlocking Stabilised Soil blocks (ISSBs) in the year 2009 is fundamental to its usage for affordable housing delivery in developing nations. Considering the fact that the recent global economic challenges impacted the Nigerian economy, housing, recorded to be deficient by the Ministry of Housing in 2015 is a concern due to the tremendous rise in the cost of materials. This study assessed architects' response to the adoption of ISSBs as an alternative building material for Housing Projects in Southwest Nigeria towards recommending its widespread adoption for economical building construction works. The objectives were; to examine the role of architects in building material specifications; to explore characteristics of ISSBs that make them viable as an alternative building material, and to assess architects' response to the adoption of ISSBs. The study adopted a Mixed Method of Research in carrying out the assessment. Relevant literature was reviewed and necessary data were collected through interviews granted to the targeted respondents towards providing in-depth knowledge of ISSBs. This paper examined the need to inculcate basic Catering Techniques for Sustainable Retirement among Secondary School Teachers in Owerri Municipal Council of Imo State. Generally, it has been observed that secondary school teachers retire to become impoverished the most due to lack of prior acquisition of basic skill to move on with life after retirement. However, considering the devastating effect of Covid-19 pandemic on the living standard of the people across the world, retirees especially those with little or no assistance from family members and government usually fall prey to sickness arising from blood pressure or other health challenges due to nothing to fall back on. Catering techniques needed for the retirees after their retirements were listed in the paper. The intention of this study is to prepare them with catering services techniques so as to equip them meaningfully with the basic knowledge and skill to sustain their living after retirement from active working age. Different catering services were highlighted for the benefit of the Retirees. The paper concludes that, increasing rate of unemployment in Nigeria, and the lingering nature of irregular payment of salaries and retirement benefits, an effective training in the major areas of Home Science (basic catering techniques) will ensure functional and productive life for individuals towards national development. The paper therefore, recommends that the federal Government through her ministry of education should sensitize the public through mass media, seminars, and workshops on the benefit of acquiring basic catering techniques.

Information Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the globally acknowledged learnings and teaching space today as well as one of the critical propellants of globalization. Development in ICT has vastly transformed every sphere of life and permeated all human actions and endeavors. The influx of ICT is responsible for the e-everything that is now in vogue e-learning, e-mail, e-library, e-registration, e-this, and e-that. This has brought great relief to pedagogy but cannot replace the role played by teachers. However, despite the immense merits of utilizing ICT in teaching, it has been observed that some Arabic language teachers do not make use of such development but stick to the old method of teaching, whereas the language teachers need to incorporate new ideas and technologies into the learning environment to make learning interesting for their students. Based on this premise this paper aims to inform Arabic Language teachers opportunities offered by ICT, used to learning of Arabic. The subjects of the study were students of Arabic Language Education at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang Indonesia 2018 academic year and students and Department of Arabic, Faculty of Arts University of Ilorin, Nigeria. Streszczenie:
From a social constructionist perspective and using Positioning Theory, this study examined the interactional strategies that interactants use in establishing their social positions in interactions in a registration office. Linguistic ethnographic methods were deployed where naturally occurring interactions of 30 participants in a registration office in a Nigerian university located in North-Central Nigeria were collected through audio-recordings, which added up to 177 minutes in total. Stimulated recall interviews were also conducted with some of the interactants to refute or validate the results of preliminary analyses of their interactional strategies. Micro-discourse analysis was adopted for the analysis of both the ethnographic and discourse data in order to account for the influence of context and other nonverbal behaviours on the interactants’ choices and the discourse data. The study revealed that sociocultural expectations, knowledge and perceptions significantly influenced the choice of the interactional strategies used for the negotiation and construction of social positions by both the teachers and the students in their interactions. The study also showed the discursive variables of power relations and ages of the interactants as impacting on their use of face acts as deliberate social positioning strategies in the interactions. The study concludes that interactants’ pragmatic awareness of context is crucial in establishing their negotiated positions in meaningful and cordial interactions.

Post occupancy evaluation is an approach in determining building performance based primarily on users' views. These views are sorted and evaluated by experts in the building industry for better design solutions. The Architects’ Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) upholds this view by providing post occupancy analysis and evaluation under phase 7 as a post construction activity in the professional payment schedule. However, minimal guidelines were set for easy adoption in the post-occupancy evaluation of buildings by ARCON for general application. To this end, this study aimed to identify the POE performance indicators and criteria relevant to building performance to guide future evaluations. The building typology considered was an architecture department building in a university. The quantitative survey involved ten architects selected through purposive sampling, and the SPSS descriptive statistics analysed data. The study considered forty criteria under three performance indicators: Design Quality (DQ), Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), and Quality of Building Support Services (QBSS). The experts rated twenty-four of the performance criteria to be relevant; thirteen were rated as moderately relevant, while three were below moderately relevant. The study recommended that proximity to sports facility and place of worship under accessibility should not be considered in POE of this building typology.

EpiCass and CassavaNet4Dev are collaborative projects funded by the Swedish Research Council between the Swedish University of Agriculture (SLU) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The projects aim to investigate the influence of epigenetic changes on agricultural traits such as yield and virus resistance while also providing African students and researchers with advanced bioinformatics training and opportunities to participate in big data analysis events. The first advanced bioinformatics training workshop took place from May 16th to May 18th, 2022, followed by an online mini-symposium titled "Epigenetics and crop improvement" on May 19th. The symposium featured international speakers covering a wide range of topics related to plant epigenetics, cassava viral diseases, and cassava breeding strategies. A new online and on-site teaching concept was developed for the three-day workshop to ensure maximum student participation across Western, Eastern, and Southern Africa. Initially planned in Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Zambia, the workshop ultimately focused on Nigeria, Kenya, and Ethiopia due to a lack of qualified candidates in the other countries. Each classroom hosted 20 to 25 students, with at least one bioinformatician present for support. The classrooms were connected via video conferencing, whereas teachers located in different places in Africa and Europe joined the video stream to conduct teaching sessions. The workshop was divided into theoretical classes and hands-on sessions, where participants could run data analysis with support from online teachers and local bioinformaticians. To enable participants to run guided, CPU and RAM-intensive data analysis workflows and overcome local computing and internet access restrictions, a system of virtual machines (VMs) hosted in the cloud was developed. The teaching platform provided teaching and exercise materials to support the use of the VMs. Although some students could not run heavy data analysis workflows due to unforeseen restrictions in the cloud, these issues were solved. All participants had the opportunity to run the analysis steps independently in the cloud using the protocols hosted on the teaching platform.

Building structures and Architecture designs are major and compulsory courses in the study of Architecture. The knowledge obtained in Building structures is applied in Architectural designs. However, students’ performances in Building structures courses have been observed to be generally low and what is not known is if there is low performance in Architectural designs also. This study therefore carried out a comparative analysis of academic performance of Architecture students in Building structures and Architectural designs courses in Southwestern Nigerian public Universities in order to improve on students’ performances on these courses. The study was a descriptive survey that involved questionnaire, five public universities approved by the National Universities Commission and Architects Registration Council of Nigeria namely: FUTA, LAUTECH, OAU, UNILAG and OOU were purposively sampled. A total of 702 questionnaires were administered to all the pre-final and final year students in the Department of Architecture of the sampled universities, while only 541 questionnaires were adequately completed and considered fit for analysis. Cross tabulation with chi-square was used to summarize the data. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was employed to show the relationship between Building structure knowledge and Architectural designs performance, while Regression analysis was used to assess the effect of the two courses on students’ performances. The study revealed that there was a significant relationship between the knowledge of Building structure and students’ performance in Architectural designs as the students progressed in their studies (r=0.641; p=0.046). The study concluded that the depth of knowledge in Building Structures is a function of good performance in Architectural designs, when all other factors leading to good Architectural Designs expertise are kept in place.

Background: Childhood Disease prevention practices (DPP) by day-care/preschools caregivers are essential to the wellbeing of enrolled children. We assessed DPP such as hand hygiene, feeding, nutrition, handling sick children and pre-employment medical screening in day-cares /pre-schools and the factors associated with DPP.Methods: The cross-sectional study involved 799 pre-school caregivers (teachers and minders/nannies). Ten settlements were selected from five randomly selected metropolitan Local Government Areas in Oyo state, Nigeria. Data collected on DPP was mainly graduated on 3-point Likert like scale: ‘always responses’- allotted 2 points; ‘sometimes’- 1 point; and ‘never’- zero. Using a significance level (p value) set at 5% and higher R-squared values, associations between DPPs and explanatory variables were tested). Results: Mean age of respondents was 33.7±9.5 years. Majority, 594 (74.3%) did not have pre-employment childcare training. Self-reported hand hygiene was highest for stool moments. Most 456 (56.3%) reported formula feeds for 1-6 months and mainly staples for older children. Aggregated DPP score (80) was dichotomized using mean childcare DPP score of 24±4.5. Slightly more than half of the respondents, 453 (56.7%) had inadequate DPP. Formal childcare training p<0.001, current job specification p=0.02 and knowledge of VPD p=0.004 were associated with DPP index. Some predictors of adequate childcare DPP include facility registration status (OR=2.19, 95%CI=1.05-4.56); respondents who had childcare training (OR=1.52, 95%CI=1.083-2.144); affiliation with health (OR=2.0, 95%CI=1.227-3.262).Conclusions: This study highlights childcare DPP within the day-cares/pre-schools and provides evidence for tailored training interventions and monitoring of the facilities.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine the information literacy trends, challenges and opportunities in Nigerian universities, With focus on its characteristics; content and adequacy for students’ information literacy development and lifelong learning. The effort to ensure that university students are empowered to acquire the competences needed for all round education and lifelong learning has been the primary focus of the university curriculum. University regulatory body in Nigeria emphasised the need to provide students with a study plan which provides them with capacity to locate information resources, access, evaluate and use them in legally acceptable manner. The programme is differently captioned with varying contents. With evolving approach to literacy, this study was designed to determine whether the programme has evolved from use of library education to information literacy or still at its traditional mode. Design/methodology/approach Descriptive survey research method was adopted for the study. The population consists of federal and state university libraries in Nigeria. The characteristics, content and adequacy of the programme as offered in Nigerian universities was the measure to determine the type of literacy. Questionnaire derived from literature and personal experience was designed to elicit information. A copy of the questionnaire was sent to each university that constituted the sample of the study by mail and telephone interviews were given to the heads of the sampled libraries. Findings It was discovered that majority of the universities studied were yet to consolidate the library literacy programme offered in their universities. Hence, the provision of information literacy content is yet to be realised in Nigerian universities. Practical implications There should be constant evaluation and monitoring of the programme by the regulatory bodies to ensure that the programme is reviewed at the appropriate time and that they also abide to the minimum standard. Originality/value For the effective implementation of programme to reflect the current development in research and information sourcing, retrieval and use; collaboration in content development as well as teaching between faculty and library; increasing or splitting the programme content to accommodate first year and higher level undergraduates, the regulatory bodies like Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria should ensure constant evaluation of the programme.

This article analyses the perceptions of various stakeholders regarding their views on how accreditation issues were affecting private universities’ operations in Malawi. The article was based on a study that was conducted at six private universities in Malawi using a mixed methods research approach, utilising a descriptive survey research design. It involved a total of 152 respondents comprising of registrars, heads of departments, teachers and students from the targeted private universities, as well as public and private sectors executives in the country. This study revealed that the majority of the respondents were of the view that Malawi National Council for Higher Education was doing a commendable job in providing the needed monitoring and evaluation of higher education institutions and their respective study programmes in Malawi. It was also revealed that the action of being discredited or deregistered had a very big impact on the reputation of the concerned universities, students and the already produced graduates, hence the visits by NCHE officials created tension at the institutions. Nevertheless, the study concluded that the accreditation of institutions of higher learning and their study programmes was the only way to go in enhancing and controlling the quality of higher education in Malawi since there is no alternative to strict compliance to high standards. The need for revision of the higher education policies and laws in the country to strongly discourage the operation of the institution prior to their registration and accreditation by NCHE is strongly recommended.
