Streszczenie:
In the period from 1950 to 1990, the Taiwanese economy, which has become famous for its rapid growth, underwent many dramatic changes. This thesis examines the role of the small and medium sized export trading companies (SMETCs) in the transition of Taiwan's economy under its export-oriented policies. Taiwan's SMETCs not only acted as intermediaries between manufacturers and international buyers in the export channels but also provided strategic information relating to the global market and acted as an agent in changing the focus and direction of Taiwanese industries. They exercised significant power, leading Taiwanese industries into successive stages of globalization. Furthermore, SMETCs also pushed Taiwan into achieving both 'scale economies' and 'scope economies'. Taiwan's SMETCs provided the logistics for the famous Taiwanese subcontract domestic production networks. Under this manufacturing system, SMETCs helped to develop Taiwan's economy first from the stage of agricultural and processed products into labour-intensive light industry, then into the skilled labour-intensive industries of electronic and electrical assemblies, and finally into the capital-intensive high technology industries. The SMETCs have played a significant role in the staged development of the Taiwanese economy.

Chang, Yu-Hsin. "Food and Identity: A Socio-historical Perspective on the Evolution of Taiwanese Cuisine". Thesis, Griffith University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367854.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Anthelme Brillat-Savarin proposed the idea: ‘tell me what kind of food you eat and I will tell you what kind of man you are’ in 1826. Since then, there has been an ample body of research undertaken examining the relationship between food and identity and there has been much debate about this issue. In Taiwan, since the transition of political power from external to internal rule in 1988, there has been an increased interest expressing Taiwanese identity, including food and identity. However, while there are plenty of popular publications on the subject, few academic works examine this based on serious in-depth research. This study takes a socio-historical perspective to examine the development of Taiwanese food and document its elevation to cuisine status, linking to a rise of Taiwanese identity and the way people express that consciousness. Taiwan was subject to different external powers after 1624: the Dutch colonizers, Han settlers, the Japanese and the Nationalist government. In the Japanese period beginning in 1895, Taiwanese consciousness took the form of an ethnic identification, one which contrasted with identifying with the Japanese. In the mid and late 1940s this changed into a bensheng, ‘this province’, consciousness: Taiwanese used this term to contrast themselves with those Mainlanders who arrived in the Nationalist period. Similarly, the status of Taiwanese food differed during the different historical periods. Taiwanese food was especially regarded as low cuisine when Taiwan was a Japanese colony (1895-1945) and during the Nationalists government (1945-1988). After 1988 it changed to become considered representative of Taiwan and began being served as a cuisine in high-end restaurants. The sense of Taiwanese identity increased during the same time period.

Streszczenie:
This thesis provides a genealogical account of ‘Taiwanese’ as a national identity. Genealogy is a way of writing a history of the present that de-familiarises us from what we now take for granted by revealing in detail how things were otherwise. As argued in this thesis, Taiwanese identity, in ontological terms, exists only in discourse. It is a way of talking and doing things relative to what sort of people the Taiwanese are; every word and action contributes to the idea that there is such a thing as ‘Taiwanese-ness’ and helps to substantialise the qualities/features attached to it. This thesis conceptualises Taiwanese identity as having no fixed, essential, or permanent identity; rather, it is formed and transformed continuously in relation to the ways people talk and act. This thesis investigates various social practices/events in post-authoritarian Taiwan that incited people to talk about Taiwanese-ness. Certain things, with different positions, forms and organisations, were said and done, while other alternatives disappeared or were omitted and repressed. With various power relations, different discourses mutually intersected, interacted and competed. The social practices/events selected in this thesis include the production of knowledge, the publication of a comic book, an election campaign, and a political demonstration. It is crucially noted that the social practices/events analysed in this thesis are just a few of the numerous events that occur periodically or repeatedly. This thesis, in sum, is an attempt to understand how various social practices/events enable or disable certain ways through which people make sense of their past and their political lives, thereby coming to terms with their belongings, their allegiances, and their situated-ness. Taiwanese-ness is spoken of, not only literally but also symbolically, and it is this process of being ‘spoken of’ that constitutes the Taiwanese-ness – the birth of the ‘Taiwanese’.

Streszczenie:
This research explored how and in what ways early childhood and fatherhood are constructed in Taiwanese father-run baby blogs. Nowadays, many parents use the internet to record and share their experiences of being (and becoming) parents. There is a growing body of literature on mothers on the internet, but the subjects of fathers on the internet and the child as recorded by the parents are both under-explored. This research selected three public Taiwanese baby blogs to study. All of the blogs were being run by new fathers and all were named (entitled) using the child's name or nickname. The entries and interactions within these blogs up until the blogged children turned three years old were observed. The blog entries and the interactions within them were treated as public texts, and a qualitative method suitable for analysing different forms of blog contents was developed. In relation to the new doing of fathering - blogging - the interactive nature of the internet and its function of creating and strengthening the identity were not obvious in this research. Although these blogs seemed to be isolated from other online communities, one of the studied cases provides us with an example of how the blog and the participants' off-line activities enrich each other. The findings of this research also suggest that these public presentations of family life have the purpose of displaying family, in order to confirm the family relationship with their readers and especially with the recorded child in the future. This displaying provided us with the three fathers' versions of fatherhood. It was found that the fatherhood being constructed in these blogs is closer to the old version of a good father. The father's role still appeared as that of supporter of the mother, who was still seen as shouldering the main responsibility for child raising. However, from an analysis of the process and the descriptions of the decision making displayed in these blogs, this research suggests that the supporter (father) - leader (mother) relationship (Sanchez & Thomson, 1997; S. Williams, 2008) should be understood as a relationship between the project director (father), who oversees the project of child raising, and the project manager (mother), who has to get the project done. Although their child-raising record showed the characteristics of intensive parenting, because of this director-manager relationship, the intensive parenting shown by the father should in fact be seen as a type of intensive mothering. With regard to the displayed child, it was found that the Taiwanese child is surveyed and defined (normal or abnormal) by the state, the medical system, and parents' daily practices. The child is also nurtured with traditional gender stereotypes and traditional aspirations (to be filially obedient) in mind. In the nurturing process, the importance of education is highlighted and the child is taken to participate in competitive activities from under one year old. It was concluded that, overall, the fatherhoods and childhoods found in this research join forces in constructing and confirming (old) Taiwanese norms relating to fathers and to the 'normal' and competitive child. Since the children in this research were represented by the father and lacked agency, it is suggested that there is a pressing need for further research into the subsequent experience of these once-displayed-in-public children, that will give us a better understanding of the practice of sharing one's child(ren)'s information online.

Streszczenie:
This thesis attempt to uncover the qualitative different ways that Taiwanese workers experienced health. Workers' health is important to a country's economic, cultural and social development. Both Taiwanese government and health professionals acknowledgement the importance of health. A considerable amount of literature has been released over the past two decades in Taiwan around related issues. Most published research has reported investigation into occupational disease diagnosis, disease prevention, safety behaviours and health-related intervention for behaviour change. None has addressed the health experiences of workers. To address this gap in knowledge and literature, phenomenographic research has been completed to identify and describe the ways in which Taiwanese workers in an industrial complex experience health. In-depth interview was undertaken with eighteen participants. The interview was tape-recorded and then transcribed verbatim. Data was collected in Mandarin or Taiwanese and analysed in Chinese. This avoids the loss or change of original meaning during the translation process. Significant quotations were then translated to English by the principal researcher. Discussions between the researcher and supervisor, and between researcher and another native English speaker who is be able to read Chinese were continuous through the analysis process to ensure that the English translation is as close possible as to the original meaning. The outcomes of the research have been the identification of five conceptions of health which together represent understanding of the experience and the meaning of health. The five distinct conceptions are: health is absence of disease; health is a holistic view of the body function; health is a reward of doing 'good' deeds; health as living a healthy lifestyle; and health as a consequence of stress management. All conceptions combined constitute an outcome space that represents the referential and structural relationship between conceptions. The research outcomes contribute to an understanding of how a group of Taiwanese workers were aware of their health experience and have significant implications for health professionals in developing and conducting health intervention, for policy makers in planning occupational health policies, for describing health with a cultural context and for educators of health professionals. Furthermore, this research provides the basis for further research into specific aspects of health and its meaning in different work settings.

Beginning with Taiwan’s transition to democracy in the late 1980s China’s influence over Taiwan has begun to evolve. China, although still maintaining the right to use military force, has transition to a more economic way of dealing with Taiwan. China attempts to influence Taiwanese voting behavior by offering economic incentives for closer relations with the Mainland. This change has resulted in both of Taiwan’s main political parties evolving their positions on China. The Kuomintang (KMT) views China as an opportunity and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) views China as a threat. Keywords: China, Taiwan, Kuomintang (KMT), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)

The purpose of the study was to investigate current Taiwanese Hakka’s attitudes toward the term “Taiwanese”. The questionnaire was designed around four broad attitude questions, “Does Taiwanese mean Taiwan Soutern Min?”, “Views of broader definition of Taiwanese”, “Views of Holo” and “Controversy of the definition and naming of Taiwanese”. This research was conducted by the method of questionnaire surveys and statistically analyzing data obtained from the questionnaire. The results of this study were concluded as follows: 1. Most Hakka do not agree with the statement that Taiwanese only means Southern Min. They think that it is unfair and unreasonable giving only Southern Min the definition of Taiwanese. Also, calling only Southern Min as Taiwanese may damage the harmony among all the ethnic groups in Taiwan. 2. Most Hakka agree to define all different languages in Taiwan as Taiwanese. They hold positive thoughts of fairness and reasonableness calling all languages in Taiwan as Taiwanese, and they think it will contribute to all ethnic groups’ harmony in Taiwan by doing this. But the Hakka disagree to redefine Hakka language as “Hakka Taiwanese”. 3. Most Hakka think that it is only natural to use "Holo" to refer to so-called “Taiwanese”. In their opinion, it is also fair and reasonable. However, for almost half of the Hakka is not sure whether this naming is conducive harmony noncommittal. 4. Most Hakka views the issues of Taiwanese naming as a controversial issue, that government should intervene to help resove this issues, that the naming principles should consider the views of the ethnic groups, pay respect to the right of ethnic self-naming, that negotiation among ethnic groups is important. However, official status for all Taiwanese languages is not supported. Suggestions based on above findings are provided to further the resolution of Taiwanese naming planning Hopefully, this study can contribute to our understanding of Taiwanese naming dispute and the planning of the terms for ethnic languages in Taiwan.

After several decades of implementing a monolingual language policy in Taiwan by the government, the mother tongues of several ethnic groups in Taiwan are disappearing, or have already become extinct. Since language is an important factor that contributes to the unity and identity of a group or people, if its mother tongue vanishes, the group will in effect cease to exist as a distinct group. The mother tongue is the ‘soul’ which members of an ethnic group pass from one generation to another. It has been suggested that a powerful and convenient way to save a mother tongue is by promoting mother tongue education in the education system. However, a well-rounded mother tongue education should teach students not only how to listen(understand) and speak but also teach students to become proficient in reading and writing in their mother tongue. Therefore, the first part of the educational research in this paper is to use Taiwanese (our target mother tongue) as the language of instruction and to provide the environment in which students can understand and speak it. The study aims at understanding whether the elementary students’ academic achievement, interest in learning and the amount of Taiwanese they use will change if the medium of instruction is Taiwanese. Experimental method for research in teaching is used for this part of the research. Four experimental classes were used, two from Elementary School A in Eastern District, Tainan; two other classes from Elementary School B, Northern District, Tainan. The two classes in Elementary School A are one third grade class and one fourth grade class. The number of students studied amount to 68. The two classes in Elementary School B are one first grade class and one second grade class. The number of students studied was 50. The students from School A were observed from September 2007 to June 2009, and from February 2009 to January 2010 in School B. In addition to providing the students with a Taiwanese learning environment, instruction focused on promoting the students’ ability in writing and using Taiwanese appropriately in context for a complete Taiwanese language education. Therefore, the second part of the research focuses on the relationship between the teaching methods and their effect on academic achievement. This research utilizes the experimental teaching method to see if using Taiwanese input software to teach Taiwanese Romanization is more effective, easier to learn and more interesting for students than the traditional (manual) reading-writing method. Sixty students were involved in this experiment, chosen from two third grade classes in Elementary School C in Eastern District, Tainan, and observed from December 2009 to May 2010. According to the results of this teaching experiment, it is suggested that starting in grade 3, writing should be part of the mother tongue curriculum. This will lead students to acquire the ability to use Taiwanese in their daily life, help them become multilingual and raise their competitive edge in society. It is believed that such kind of language education will truly contribute to the preservation and revival of a mother tongue. After putting the collected experimental data through the SPSS statistical processing and analysis method, these are the main results: 1) Students in the experimental group and control group showed no statistical differences in their mathematical achievement; 2) The use of Taiwanese as the language of instruction did not affect students’ interest in learning; 3) Students in the experimental groups reacted positively to the use of Taiwanese as the language of instruction; 4) The experimental group showed an apparent increase in the amount of Taiwanese used in their daily life; 5) The use of Taiwanese input software in teaching enhanced students’ ability in spelling by the Taiwanese romanization system; 6) The use of Taiwanese input software in teaching was found to enhance students’ accuracy in using the 4th and 8th tones followed by –p,-t,-k,-h(with -p,-t,-k,-h appearing at the end of a syllable). 7) The use of Taiwanese input software in teaching was found to enhance students’ accuracy in making tone markings; 8) The use of Taiwanese input software in teaching ws found to enhance students’ accuracy in marking the positions of the tones.

This study aims to probe in the intonation of Taiwanese via impressionistic approach. The intonation contours presented in the study are conceptual descriptions for exhibiting the circumflexes of Taiwanese intonation. The data collected in the study are divided into two parts: the recording of text reading and the recording from natural discourses. All the informants in the study are Tainan inhabitants, who use Taiwanese as their native language. The reading material is a short story simulating the natural speech. As for the second part of data, the recording of ten hours’ spontaneous natural discourse fragments, the interlocutors are also Tainan inhabitants. The collected discourse fragments are mainly from the family meeting, office conversations and shopping bargins. More than thirty interlocutors are involved in the study. From the study, we find that intonation in plain speech manifests falling. Intonation for showing special moods, such as exclamation, anger, or amazement, manifest abundant circumflexes. The variation of intonation in Taiwanese results from the interchange of pitch scale and pitch range operating on two layers: local and global. We also find that intonation of sentence final particles and sentence initial interjections convey pragmatic meanings and display rich speech colors for intonation of Taiwanese.

This thesis explores Taiwanese tone automatic recognition. Using DeZongGing (地藏經) Taiwanese speech corpus and the Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK), we first segment a speech waveform into syllable segments. Then for each syllable segment, short time speech analysis is performed using acf/amdf (autocorrelation function divided by absolute mean difference function). Using these as basic features, we then explore two kinds of classifiers for Taiwanese tones. For the first kind, we further reduce the basic features into the coefficients of third order polynomial fit on the pitch tracks; pitch tracks can be obtained in a different number of ways, and we use the ridge of the largest island size in the acf/amdf map. With now four coefficients for each syllable, we then classify the syllables for their tones using LDA (linear discriminant analysis), QDA (quadratic discriminant analysis). Under cross validation, the accuracies of these classifiers range from 52% to 59%. For the second kind, we treat the basic features as a gray level picture, normalized them into size 28×28, and then use the Deep Belief Networks(DBN) for classification, as in the recognition case of hand written digits. The cross validation accuracies can go upto 72%, with or without noise perturbations.

Due to the factors of economic recession, rising deployment rates among the college graduate student and globalization, MIT has cooperated with enterprise, providing students with research&study. This policy does not help students with further understanding China, but also realizing the spirits of those companies. This study aims at evaluating the culture shock and culture adaption of such overseas research&study and those participants’ learning result. First of all, it adopts descriptive statistics and cross analysis which are in quantitative research ways to analyze the structures of the sample. It also evaluates the whole influences of such activity on Taiwanese students’ career arrangements by in-depth interview those students and their tutors in school. Here are the findings: Firstly, basically those who college participants are satisfied with the research&study experience in Taiwanese enterprise in Mainland. By taking part in such research&study, students will be more familiar with work environment, experience life in Mainland, and rise personal willing to work in China. Second, by doing overseas research&study, Taiwanese students learn how to adapt abroad culture, manage interpersonal relations, and reinforce their learning motivation as well as competitive ability. Based on these, this study provides two suggestions: First, there should be more opportunities for school teachers to take part in similar plans, by which they will have more understandings of current needs of industries. In addition, for students if they have more such opportunities to participate in such events, they will further know more trends about the market and their aptitudes and thus build their career schedule as soon as possible. Second, by joining in such 6-week overseas research&study before their graduation, students will further broaden their views and combine what they learn from school and practical experience, and thus have more competitive abilities as applying for vacancy.

Following its economic reform in 1979, Mainland China has enjoyed a significant economic growth, thanks to its competitive edge in land cost and cheap labor as it continues to lure the attention of worldwide investors to set up shop and invest in Mainland China, fostering Mainland China’s industry footing as a world factory. As marred by the deteriorating domestic investment environment and the increasing threats of Mainland China’s competitive edge, Taiwanese merchants have begun investing in Mainland China in search of taking the advantage of Mainland China’s cheap labor and land and in a move to strengthen Taiwanese merchants’ competitiveness. From the earlier day’s unauthorized investment move to the present day’s legally filed investment, the impact of the constantly expanding investment and the cross strait economic and trade interaction on Taiwan is becoming ominous. In investment mode, Taiwanese merchants’ investment in Mainland China has gradually shifted from the earlier day’s labor-intensive and export-bound brick-and-mortar manufacturing industry mode to a capital-intensive, technology-intensive and domestic sale-oriented diverse industry mode, which has fostered a dire need for financing means and capital allocation needs amid the rapidly increasing number of borrowers and financing amounts. The thesis attempts to sort out and recap, utilizing literary review and expert interview, the current stage’s feasible financing modes for Taiwan’s banking industry to finance in China, including the lending/financing mode by the local banks’ OBU braches to Taiwanese corporations’ subsidiaries in Mainland and/or it’s OBU entities, combining the parent company’s guarantee, to strengthen guaranteeing the debit claim. In addition, it also attempts to sort out the strategic alliance between the local banks’ OBU branches and Mainland regional banks or foreign-owned banks for providing Taiwanese merchants a collaborated financing mode in an attempt to identify a legal means of financing for Taiwanese merchants, help resolve the difficulty in financing common among the medium and small Taiwanese businesses, and explore new market for the Taiwanese bank operators confronting the fiercely competitive local banking environment that would allow the banks to continue providing migrating Taiwanese businesses with a host of financial services. The study’s interviews have unveiled that large-scale Taiwanese businesses are potential clients sought after by Chinese-funded banks and foreign-owned banks, and a majority of them do not hold high hopes in anticipating servicing coming from the Taiwanese bank operators following their setting up branches in China, which presents a compelling need that the Taiwanese bank operators ought to quicken their pace by keeping in close contact with major Taiwanese corporations in order to solicit and secure business ties at advantageous timing. As marred by a lowly rated borrowing credibility common among the medium and small Taiwanese businesses, which makes financing difficult, it is advisable for the Taiwan government to consider conditional deregulation for the Taiwanese banks to provide credit guarantee to Taiwanese merchants operating in China. In terms of pledging Mainland plants as collaterals, this not only helps to enforce the bank’s guarantee on the debt claim but also helps to prevent the Taiwanese merchant from further pledging whose land and plant for refinancing, If not only for the fact that it cannot be overly depended upon due to the uncertainty of mortgage claim enforceability in the future. Amid The New Basel Capital Accord that will soon be inducted by the end of 2006, it is prudent for the Taiwanese banks to instill a lending policy, and to strengthen the quality of lending to Taiwanese merchants in order to secure risk management, and excel Taiwan banking industry’s global competitiveness.

Streszczenie:
The Republic of China (ROC), also known as Taiwan, has been the haven of the Kuomintang (KMT) since its defeat at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1949. Taiwan has long been the subject of control by foreign powers, which has created a unique history for the autonomous region. Historical circumstances have created a space for a distinct Taiwanese culture that has diverged from that of the mainland. This paper examines the role of this newfound culture on civic engagement, specifically regarding the sentiment for separatism or lessened ties with the People’s Republic of China (PRC). I examine the history of the island by first discussing the evolution of Taiwanese culture over the 20th and 21st centuries. I take a closer look following Taiwan’s democratization, which developed a deeper cultural cleavage that is politically salient. Cultural cleavages have only increased the nationalist sentiment of the Taiwanese people in pushing for greater separation – if not full-fledged independence – from the PRC. The results of my historical analysis argue the relevance of culture theory on the growing divide between Taiwan and China. In addition, this paper provides a perspective the effects of identity politics in Taiwan and its effect on cross-strait relations.

In 1924, Luā Jîn-sing wrote the 1st Taiwanese fiction "Si̍p-jī-kè ê kì-hō ". But under the pressure of double national language movements afterward, Taiwanese literature was locked more than half a century. The 1970s’ native literature movement, in which Taiwanese is only embellished, motored with Taiwanese conciousness. Lacking of independence, some said that “Chinese literature” seemed to be its true color. It was then called “the border literature”. Although the government’s suppression over Taiwanese was released later on, people had been educated to be illiterate about their mother language. Obsessed by the psychological barrier of post-colonialism, they seldom support the Taiwanese literature movement. The Taiwanese literature and Taiwanese conciousness are like twins. The task of this article is to search Taiwanese fiction published during 1986-2008. Some of the works were collected in books, and some in the literary publications∙ There were 400 pieces in amount, and 78% of them were written in Han-Roman-mixed form. None wrote as many as Tân-luî. "Taiwanese Literature Communication", "The Whale Taiwanese Literature" and "Taiwanese Literature BONG Newspaper" published the most in quantity. Taiwanese fiction, abondent of Taiwanese consciousness, viewed Taiwan as the most important. They tried to get rid of and rewrite the colonized history in Taiwan. They asked the government not only to abandon his traveler attitude, but also to stop ruining the environment of the land. The main purpose was to push the official to help promote the development of Taiwanese, along with the reform of the enslaved education. After all, Taiwanese fiction tried to mend the broken Taiwan and turn it to be a beautiful island of human rights, democracy and freedom.

Same as segmental errors, tone errors which also present external evidence to language inspire in-depth explorations into the psychological reality, the processing paths, and/or the articulatory mechanisms involved in the construction of abstract linguistic units and structures. The current study based on an errors corpus not only makes several observations which echo the universals of tone, but also points out relevant theoretical implications. Stress serves as the organizer in a tone group in English, and hence that a stressed syllable often triggers anticipation assimilation in speech errors is not surprising. In addition, syllable metathesis within a word prefers the interchange between a stressed syllable and an unstressed syllable. While the presence or absence of stress is a long-standing issue in Taiwanese, the focused syllable which mostly carries a high tone presents a frequent trigger of tone assimilation in speech errors in Taiwanese Southern Min, very much like the case in English. Three important tonal issues explored in this thesis include the autosegmental representation of tone, the nature of the mid level tone, and the psychological reality of tone sandhi. A wide array of evidence from assimilation, tonal stability, to metathesis indicates that tone presents an autosegment in Taiwanese. Evidence from assimilation also manifests the underlying representation [L, h], i.e. a low-registered high tone, for the mid level. Finally, that underapplication of sandhi rules outnumbers overapplication indirectly bespeaks the derivational approach to tone processing in Taiwanese.
