Streszczenie:
Nowadays, the search for identity in Taiwan has been more significant today compared to the past because political parties have been attempting to use Taiwanese identity to impact the political loyalty, the democratization as well as language. Based on current situation of tourism cross-Straits, this paper respectively analyzes its economic value, political value as well as cultural value on Taiwanese identity. This paper finds that due to a series of strategies adopted by Tsai’ government, tourism does not make a big difference in Taiwan’s economy, hence, the interdependence of tourism does not remarkably diminish Taiwanese identity from the perspective of economic value. Furthermore, according to the current perceptions of Taiwanese to Mainland tourists, tourism across Taiwan Strait makes slight influence on Taiwanese identity. Consequently, the current effect of using tourism as an economic lever to encourage political unification is extremely rough and tenuous. Besides, to some extent, currently tourism is likely to produce greater social and cultural alienation among Taiwanese, which makes a contribution to boost Taiwanese identity. However, the result can be reverse with the current improvement of education and the quality of Chinese and admiration of China’s remarkable development.

Streszczenie:
Taiwan’s low birth rate and declining demand for higher education among the country’s high school graduates has led to vigorous competition between Taiwanese universities to attract and retain students. Increasing international student enrolment can help alleviate these existing pressures. However, the transition from high school to university life and the need to study in a degree program with English as the primary medium of instruction, can present challenges for first-year students. We aimed to investigate First Year (FY) Taiwanese and non-Taiwanese students’ learning experiences and the barriers they face at a private university. The key research findings are based on factors affecting FY students’ learning experiences such as interactive teaching techniques, peer support, program attributes, social integration, and the international learning environment. We argue that for higher education institutions (HEIs) to stand out in a highly competitive environment, university management should optimise their resources and services to meet local and international students’ needs.

Streszczenie:
With the prevalence of smart devices and wireless Internet, privacy has become a pivotal matter in governmental, academic, and technological fields. Our study aims to understand Taiwanese university students’ privacy concerns and protective behaviours in relation to online targeting ads and their habitual smartphone usage. Surveying 810 valid subjects, our results first propose that ad relevance has direct bearing on attention to ads. Second, ad relevance inversely correlates with privacy concerns (i.e. descending personal control and surging corporate power) and protective behaviours (self-filtering and ad evasion). Third and finally, neither privacy concerns nor protective behaviours have a negative bearing on habitual smartphone usage. Opposite to previous research, our study concludes that Taiwanese college students exhibit zero privacy paradox, owing to no signs of privacy concern incited by mobile targeting ads, no evidence of significant protective behaviours, and no decreasing habitual smartphone usage out of privacy concern and protection. Our findings indicate Taiwanese university students’ shaky awareness of potential risks and crises from exposure to vulnerable online privacy management. To deal with this, we suggest educating youths’ understandings of digital jeopardy by experts is urgently needed more so than just technical tutorials of privacy settings.

This study clarifies the rationale for offering overseas programmes as an internationalization strategy by Taiwanese higher education institutions through an analysis of related university documents and interview data. In doing so, this study highlights how institutional goals and characteristics, as well as social and cultural backgrounds, affect the internationalization of higher education based on the following two points. First, in addition to the pursuit of academic excellence and expanding student markets, university strategies are based on its particular history, resources, development goals, and orientation. Second, although different strategies were observed among the examined universities, the Chinese element and the pluralistic value of Taiwanese society have influenced the overseas programmes offered by Taiwanese universities. This paper argues that instead of merely adopting the international standard or pursuing academic excellence, it is essential for Taiwanese universities to implement internationalization strategies in order to determine their meaning and purpose in the context of Taiwanese higher education.

The purpose of this study was to examine the similarities and differences in American and Taiwanese children’s perspectives of tidy-up time. The participants consisted of 25 American kindergarteners in the southeastern US, and 25 Taiwanese kindergarteners from central Taiwan. Children were asked to respond to five questions regarding tidy-up time. Qualitative analysis of the data yielded four themes: transitions, clean and safe environments, work, and cooperation. All participants associated tidy-up time with transitions. They considered tidy-up as the notion of maintaining clean environments, but only Taiwanese children perceived it to be keeping the classroom safe. Also, all participants viewed such time as work, and as time to cooperate with each other. More Taiwanese children’s responses indicated how they and their teachers cooperate during cleaning as compared to their American counterparts.

International marriages have increased the population of new immigrants in Taiwan. Most Taiwanese educators are unaware of the expectations of the new immigrant parents. This ethnographic research explored whether Taiwanese primary school teachers implemented culturally responsive teaching to help the children of new immigrants become academically accomplished from the perspectives of the new immigrant parents. The findings indicated that most Taiwanese primary school teachers were aware of the challenges the children of new immigrants faced but culturally responsive teaching approaches were rarely implemented in any meaningful way, and that Taiwan still lacked effective communication styles, multicultural curriculum design and culturally congruent teaching. While most Taiwanese teachers recognized cultural differences, they failed to pursue measures to achieve educational equity. The new challenges and relevant issues are discussed. Higher education in Asia is becoming more prominent according to Western higher education researchers, but it is also being influenced by globalization, resulting in two types of structural inequality in higher education. Organizational justice relates to positive developments of educational organizations. It refers to the sense of fairness and equality on aspects of organization policies and regulations relating to individual interests perceived by organizations’ internal members. This research first reviews the related literature to identify internal factors in the concept of organizational justice in higher education. The author designed a survey questionnaire to assess professors’ perceptions of organizational justice at their universities. The author sent out the questionnaires to Taiwanese professors with different research expertise at different universities. This research divided organizational justice into distributive justice, procedure justice, interpersonal justice, and information justice. Ultimately, 180 valid questionnaires were collected and analyzed. Four background variables (gender, age, position, and institutional type) showed statistical correlations with organizational justice in Taiwan’s higher education institutions.

In Doctors Within Borders, Ming-cheng Lo discusses the experience of Taiwanese doctors under Japanese colonial rule. By examining the viewpoints of colonial subjects, this work expands our understanding of colonialism in East Asia. The position of Taiwanese doctors continuously fluctuated between the colonial state, Taiwan society, and the culture of their medical profession. These doctors were ‘in-betweens’ in various ways. They received colonial education, and benefited from the Japanese rule, but at the same time they were a part of the Taiwan ethnic community. Though they enjoyed liberalism and autonomy within their professional culture, they remained subordinate to their Japanese mentors and colleagues. While they were the most modernized or ‘Japanized’ elements in Taiwan, they nonetheless engaged in social movements and contributed to the formation of Taiwan's civil society.

Streszczenie:
Children have been marginalised in nationalism studies, particularly in the discussion of education. The process of education was taken for granted while children’s agency and their construction of national discourses were neglected. This thesis was to examine and compare children’s national discourses and those in pedagogical materials in the context of recent Taiwanese nationalism since 2000. This thesis concerned children’s discourses and pedagogical discourses in four areas: (1) the nation; (2) national identity; (3) ethnicity; and (4) being a minority. Data was collected through individual interviews, documentary research and observations. Individual interviews were conducted with a sample of 28 primary school children (aged 8-11) in a selected primary school in Taiwan. The participants were recruited from children of Chinese immigrants, children of Vietnamese immigrants, and children of native Taiwanese to compare their various experiences and perspectives. The findings showed that children’s discourses did not necessarily correspond to pedagogical discourses although they partly match to each other. The nation was portrayed as ‘Taiwan’ consistently in the textbooks and by children, while the ‘Republic of China’ was being ‘forgotten’ by children and marginalised in textbooks. In addition, a Taiwanese identity is prevailing among children. However, children challenged the existing concepts of ethnicity and the language policy at school. Finally, this thesis found that the national discourses in pedagogy was rather exclusive than inclusive. Therefore, the minority groups, such as children of immigrants, Hakka, and the Aborigines, felt being the ‘others’ in the discourses of Taiwanese nationalism. In conclusion, children are not objects of pedagogical national discourses. Instead, the pedagogical discourses rely on students’ interpretation and performance. Therefore, children are active subjects who are able to challenge pedagogical discourses and construct their own national discourses.

Two hundred and twenty-three Taiwanese college and high school students (124 boys and 109 girls, aged 16-18 yrs) were administered the Chinese version of the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire for Adolescents (OSIQ) and Family Background Survey. The self-image questionnaire and social economic status (SES) survey data were used to investigate different gender and social class levels in the self-image of Taiwanese adolescents. Social class was determined by means of the Hollingshead "Two Factor Index of Social Position". Results showed that girls displayed poorer self-image than boys in many areas. Student's social class background had no apparent influence on self-image. Also there were no interaction effects of gender and social class in the self-image of Taiwanese adolescents.

Streszczenie:

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to understand and describe key factors contributing to the success of Taiwanese women leaders in the predominantly male context of contemporary churches in Taiwan. Participants included five effective female senior pastors and fourteen followers from these leaders' churches. Data were collected using in-depth, semi-structured interviews and participant observations. Data analysis yielded six major leadership characteristics in three dimensions: (a) Interactive dimension—spiritual leadership, relational leadership, team-building leadership, (b) Task dimension—organizational leadership, productive leadership, and (c) Change dimension—visionary leadership.

There is no rigid, linear, step-by-step progressive relationship among the six characteristics; rather, the linkage is reciprocal. Further, despite individual differences, all six major leadership characteristics were present in all leader participants. Also, while all leaders clearly saw spiritual leadership as the most essential, all the qualities were deemed important.

Moral education in Japanese and Taiwanese primary schools is an important source of political socialization. An analysis of these two countries' moral education curricula reveals traditions which reinforce national solidarity and central governmental authority. Moreover, political ideology is merged with supporting academic, economic, and cultural values. This study examines the political ideology of the moral education curricula in Japanese and Taiwanese primary schools, the values and behavior promoted by these ideologies, as well as the similarities and differences between the Japanese and Taiwanese systems. It is shown that a distinctive feature of both systems is the emphasis placed on political conformism, high academic achievement, professional diligence and economic success.

Streszczenie:
AbstractTaiwan has, from 2006, participated in five Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) surveys. This chapter discusses Taiwan’s performance in PISA and its implications. At first, the education system and the process of educational reform in Taiwan were described. Then Taiwan’s performances for reading, math, and science in PISA were delineated. Taiwanese students have had consistently excellent performance for math and science; its reading performance, although not as outstanding as those for math and science, has improved significantly from 2009 to 2018. The gender gap in reading, in favour of female students, has narrowed, and the gender gap in math and science has been small. Educational equity, especially between rural and urban students, has also improved from 2006 to 2018. The proportion of high performers in reading and the proportion of low performers in reading, math, and science has increased from 2006 to 2018, while the proportions of top performers in math and science have decreased. These findings are interpreted from the perspectives of cultural beliefs, changes in the education system and national assessment, government investment in the related domains, and the nature of the PISA assessment.

Streszczenie:
The increase in greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere has led to global warming. Climate change is an international environmental issue. Therefore, companies should pay more attention to carbon management strategies in their supply chains. It also requires major suppliers to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and climate change strategies through CDP. These suppliers include some large electronics manufacturers in Taiwan. The focus of this research is to understand the carbon management strategy in the green supply chain of Taiwan's electronics industry. Based on the collected strategies, a questionnaire was compiled and mailed to listed electronics companies in Taiwan to understand how Taiwanese electronics companies deal with carbon management in their supply chains. In this study, the collected data were analyzed and processed through descriptive statistical analysis, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson product difference correlation, and multiple stepwise regression analysis. And draw the following conclusion: Director of Electronics Industry- The views on overall green supply chain management and overall company performance are in the middle and high levels, there are significant differences in "marriage", "gender", "age", "education" and "work experience", there is a positive correlation between all aspects, and there are significant differences, there is a significant correlation between the two. And has the predictive ability. The results of this study also indicate that the most important strategies for large electronics companies to manage their supply chain carbon risks are "green product design," "material replacement," "energy efficiency," and "reducing packaging and reusability." And these companies have already begun to implement these carbon management strategies. Finally, based on the research process and conclusions, specific suggestions are made to provide references for Taiwan’s electronics-related industries and future researchers.
