Streszczenie:
In an original article, an addition was made to the well-known Taguchi’s methodical design literature by proposing how Poisson distribution may be incorporated into the Taguchi method for enhanced performance analysis in optimization. While the article is recent, it was found compelling enough to apply this novel concept of Poisson distribution to a growing area of maintenance research known as maintenance downtime analysis. Consequently, this paper contributes to the expanding research neighborhood through a Taguchi optimization method based on Poisson distribution related to the maintenance process optimization. A valuable method to optimize maintenance downtime was developed wherein the Poisson distribution was used to achieve the probability of maintenance downtime. An important foundation of the method is the Taguchi scheme. These elements were transformed into the factor-level design of the Poisson enhanced Taguchi scheme while the framework was tested using data from a process industry for validation. Interesting, the Taguchi's signal-to-noise quotient led to an enhanced set of limiting factors for better reliability of the system as G1H1I1J1K3. By interpretation, the following was found: downtime (204.61 mins), probability density function (0.00187), and cumulative density function (0.00776). The combination of these factors and levels will enhance maintenance downtime in the process industry as a result of their contributions. The outcome revealed the competence of the model to optimization schemes.

Streszczenie:
The present work attempts to overcome underlying assumptions in traditional Taguchi based optimization techniques highlighted in literature. Taguchi method alone fails to solve multi-response optimization problems. In order to overcome this limitation, exploration of grey relation theory, desirability function approach, utility theory etc. have been found amply applied in literature in combination with Taguchi method. But aforesaid approaches relies on the assumption that individual response features are uncorrelated i.e. independent of each other which are really impossible to happen in practice. The study takes into account this response correlation and proposes an integrated methodology in a case study on optimization of multiple bead geometry parameters of submerged arc weldment. Weighted Principal Component Analysis (WPCA) has been applied to eliminate response correlation and to convert correlated responses into equal or less number of uncorrelated quality indices called principal components. Based on individual principal components a Multi-response Performance Index (MPI) has been introduced to derive an equivalent single objective function which has been optimized (maximized) using Taguchi method. Experiments have been conducted based on Taguchi’s L25 Orthogonal Array design with combinations of process control parameters: voltage, wire feed, welding speed and electrode stick-out. Different bead geometry parameters: bead width, bead height, penetration depth and HAZ dimensions have been optimized. Optimal result has been verified by confirmatory test. The study highlights effectiveness of the proposed method for solving multi-objective optimization of submerged arc weld.

The research presents an analysis and comparison of the Taguchi Design and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) in optimizing the laser cutting machine parameters on dimension accuracy for stainless steel products. The paper studies effects of input factors such as cutting speed, nitrogen pressure, power, and frequency on the quality cutting of stainless steel (304) specimens. In this paper, two objectives are examined: targeting laser-cut edge to perpendicular 90 degrees and maximizing the cutting accuracy. The paper proposes a simple formula to optimize both targets by minimizing one new function definition, i.e., dimensional error. An L9 orthogonal array of Taguchi Methodology is adopted to minimize the number of experiments and shorten analysis time to achieve the optimal parameters. These results are compared with RSM. Box–Behnken Design (BBD) type of RSM requires more experiments than the Taguchi approach. RSM regression models as the quadratic functions of the control factors are developed to minimize the dimensional error of cutting products. Then, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and graphs will be analyzed to determine the influences of variables on the responses. Both Taguchi’s method and RSM found that the most influential factor on dimension accuracy is cutting speed, followed by laser power. While Taguchi provides good graphic visualization for quickly predicting the optimum condition, it cannot examine the interaction effects as RSM due to the lack of data. Besides, RSM reveals the percentage contribution of factors on dimensional error. Cutting speed has a maximum contribution, i.e., 39% of the total. The interaction of cutting speed and power contributes 16% of the total. In this study, RSM can predict optimum conditions more accurately than Taguchi. There are misleading results from the Taguchi method compared with RSM. However, the difference between these objective values is insignificant. The validation experiments show that the Taguchi method can be a practical approach for optimization problems. It can help reduce cost and time and achieve the desired optimal outputs. With cutting problems requiring high precision, the RSM method is highly recommended for identifying optimal parameter settings and interaction effects. With problems that their experimental runs consume high cost and time, Taguchi can be a suitable method for screening the significant variables. Although Taguchi and RSM are used widely for optimization problems in many fields, choosing the right methodology for various objectives is still a concern with different arguments and needs further research. Therefore, this study could be an adequate reference for parameter optimization problems in various fields.

A high proportion of lubricants used in automobile engines are mineral-based oil. The depletion of oil reserves and the concerns (non-biodegradable, toxic and environmental issues) of mineral based lubricants prompted the research for a viable alternative. Vegetable oil has been proposed as a potential substitute for the mineral-base lubricants due to its natural and eco-friendly characteristics. In this study, optimization of tribological characteristics of blended SAE 40 produced from SN 500 mineral oil, Shea butter bio-base oil, and viscosity improver was carried out on pin-on-disc tribometer. Taguchi and Taguchi-grey relational method were used to optimize the load and sliding speed to obtain the minimum specific wear rate and coefficient of friction (COF) for the blended SAE 40. The optimum parameters using Taguchi’s and Taguchi-grey relational analysis methods are 8 N load and 5 cm/s sliding speed. At this optimum condition, the minimum specific wear rate of 0.007 mm3 /Nm and minimum coefficient of friction of 0.001 were observed. The developed mathematical model was validated against the experimental results. Deviation of about 5% was obtained in the wear rate model using Taguchi model. Also, the correlation of about 89.77% was observed between the model developed using Taguchi-grey relational model and experimental values. This implies that the two models can be used to predict the tribological properties of blended SAE 40 lubricant.

AbstractIn the present work, an attempt has been made to solve the correlated multi-response optimization problem of wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) of EN-31 steel. The experimental investigation have been carried out to evaluate the best process environment which could simultaneously satisfy multiple quality characteristics such as material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness (Ra) and dimensional deviation (DD). In view of the fact that traditional Taguchi method cannot solve a multi response optimization problem, weighted principal component analysis (WPCA) has been coupled with Taguchi method to overcome this limitation. The multiple responses are converted into a single response using principal component analysis so that influence of correlation among the responses can be eliminated. Values of individual principal components multiplied by their priority weight were added to calculate the composite principal component defined as multi-response performance index (MPI). MPI is used as response for optimization using Taguchi's L27 orthogonal array. From analysis of variance, pulse on time was found to be the most significant parameter. Finally, the optimal result obtained was verified through confirmatory test.

Sheet metal deep-draw die is primarily constructed with draw bead, which is then modified based on trial and error to obtain a successful forming without splitting. This work aims at a robust design of forming die using numerical analysis and the Taguchi method. A three dimensional elastoplastic finite element model of a sheet metal forming process of SPCEN steel has been successfully developed using the material flow stress obtained from the modified Erichsen cup test. The model was validated with the actual forming experiment and the results agreed well. The influence of draw bead parameters on splitting and thinning distributions were examined using the Taguchi method. Four parameters, namely the friction coefficient, draw bead height, radius and shoulder radius were investigated. The Taguchi main effect analysis and ANOVA results show that the height and shoulder radius of the draw bead are the most important factor influencing the thinning distribution. Applying the Taguchi method and using the minimum thinning percentage as the design criteria, the optimum die design was identified as height, radius, shoulder radius and the friction coefficient of 4, 8, 8 mm and 0.125 respectively. The verified finite element model using the optimum die design was conducted. The predicted Taguchi response was within 5.9% from finite element analysis prediction. The improvement in the reduction of thinning percentage was 22.35%.

Unlike the conventional dynamic Taguchi analysis, an innovative quantified index, the figure of merit (FOM), was proposed to integrate four specific quality characteristics, namely (i) average difference between the practical scan and theoretically preset area (78.5, 50.2 and 12.6 mm2) of stenosis, (ii) standard deviation of the average, (iii) practical scan’s sensitivity β to various stenosis diameters (10, 8, and 4 mm), and (iv) correlation coefficient r2 of the linear regressed sensitivity curve. The highest value (FOM = 0.413) was furnished by the optimal combination of factors on 18 groups under study, yielding high r2 and low β or standard deviation values and the best quality of ultrasound images for the further clinical diagnosis. The comparison between FOM and the conventional signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio in Taguchi’s analysis revealed that FOM compiled more quality characteristics that were superior by nature to fulfill the practical need in clinical diagnosis. The alternative choice in ultrasound scan optimization can be based on stenosis diameter variation from a different perspective to be explored in the follow-up study.

This article aims to use the Taguchi method coupled with fuzzy logic on the tolerance sensitivity analysis of a four-bar function generator. Experiments designed by the Taguchi method were carried out for obtaining the mean and the maximum displacement variations of the function generator. By converting these two variations into a multiple performance index by means of fuzzy logic, the effect of each control factor on the mechanism quality was further analysed. The Taguchi method coupled with fuzzy logic was used to systematically analyse the effect of individual control factors on the displacement variations of a four-bar function generator from which the key dimensions were identified.

This article carried out a numerical investigation of knock, using the Taguchi method and the grey relational analysis method to determine the importance and the contribution rate of multiple parameters on the peak pressure in the cylinder and the knock tendency under heavy load conditions. Four parameters, namely, compression ratio, spark timing, EGR rate, and inlet temperature, were set at four levels. The simulation was designed using a design of experiment method based on Taguchi's L16 orthogonal array. The simulation results of knock tendency and peak in-cylinder pressure were analyzed by the Taguchi-Grey method. According to the analysis results of the Taguchi-Grey method, the optimal level, the importance rank, and the contribution rate of factors on the knock tendency, peak in-cylinder pressure, and equivalent response were determined. The results demonstrate that the contribution rate of compression ratio, spark timing, EGR rate, and inlet temperature to the knock tendency is 45.9%, 22.98%, 19.46%, and 11.66%, respectively. The compression ratio, spark timing, EGR rate, and inlet temperature contribution to the peak in-cylinder pressure is 40.56%, 31.03%, 24.94 and 3.47%, respectively. The optimal conditions for the minimum knock tendency and the maximum peak in-cylinder pressure are obtained at CR1 EGR4 IT1 ST1 and CR4 EGR1 IT1 ST4, respectively.

For analysis using the Taguchi method, the L18 or L27 orthogonal array is usually adopted. However, this requires many experiments (18 or 27 runs, respectively), which consumes time and increases costs. In addition, while traditional analysis with the Taguchi model provides a better group of processing parameters, it cannot predict the unexperimented results. This article proposes a progressive Taguchi neural network model that combines the Taguchi method with an artificial neural network and constructs a prediction model for near-field photolithography experiments. This approach establishes a Taguchi neural network that requires fewer experimental runs, while achieving a high predictive precision. The analytical results of the progressive Taguchi neural network model show that, because there are few training examples in the stage 1 preliminary network, there is a significant fluctuation in the network prediction values. In the stage 2 refining network, the prediction effect in the region around the Taguchi factor level points is not bad, but the prediction in the region more remote from the learning and training examples has greater error. The stage 3 precise network can provide optimal prediction results for the full field.

Optimization of cutting parameters in finish turning of medical stainless steel 316LVM with coated carbide tools using Taguchi method is proposed in this paper. Four cutting parameters namely, insert radius, depth of cut, feed and cutting speed are optimized with considerations of surface roughness as performance characteristic. The effects of cutting parameters on the surface roughness were experimentally investigated. Experimentation was conducted as per Taguchi's orthogonal array. Four cutting parameters with three levels are arranged in L27 orthogonal array. The orthogonal array, measured values of surface roughness, signal-to-noise ratios and analysis of variance are employed to study the surface roughness. Based on the analysis, the optimal cutting parameter settings were determined. Through the confirmation test with optimal cutting parameter settings the effectiveness of the optimization approach are validated. The obtained results have shown that Taguchi method is suitable for optimizing the cutting parameter levels with the minimum number of experiments.

Optical lenses are extensively used to enhance the performance of light-emitting diodes. Both uniformity and efficiency are important performance indicators in lens design; however, improving uniformity always lowers efficiency. In this study, the Taguchi method and principal component analysis (PCA) are integrated to optimise the lens shape for two quality objectives, namely, uniformity and efficiency. The Taguchi method was conducted twice to establish the signal/noise ratio of the two quality characteristics for calculating the principal components in PCA. Then, the optimum parameters obtained by the Taguchi method were processed by PCA. The correlated individual responses were converted to the principal components which explained most of the dataset and were considered as the single quality characteristic for the optimisation. The combined method resolved the difficulties of optimising multiple quality characteristics without sacrificing any particular quality characteristic while the traditional Taguchi method can only be applied to the single quality characteristic. A LED light source fitted with a secondary lens designed by the proposed method showed over 92% light efficiency and an improvement in uniformity.

A special inverse analysis method is established in order to calibrate soil constitutive models. Taguchi method as a systematic sensitivity analysis is conducted to determine the real values of mechanical parameters. This technique was applied on the hardening soil (as an elastoplastic constitutive model) which is calibrated using the results from pressuremeter test performed on “Le Rheu” clayey sand. Meanwhile, a genetic algorithm (GA) as a well-known optimization technique is used to fit the computed numerical results and observed data of the soil model. This study indicates that the Taguchi method can reasonably calibrate the soil parameters with minimum number of numerical analyses in comparison with GA which needs plenty of analyses. In addition, the contribution of each parameter on mechanical behavior of soil during the test can be determined through the Taguchi method.

AbstractThis research proposes a procedure for solving the multiresponse problem in the Taguchi method utilizing two data envelopment analysis (DEA) approaches, including comparisons of efficiency between different systems (CEBDS) and bilateral comparisons. In this procedure, each experiment in Taguchi's orthogonal array (OA) is treated as a decision-making unit (DMU) with the multiresponses as the inputs and outputs for all DMUs. For each factor of OA, the DMUs are divided into groups, each at the same factor level. Then, DMU's efficiency is separately evaluated by the CEBDS approach and the bilateral comparisons approach for each factor. The level efficiency, or the average of the efficiencies obtained by the CEBDS and the bilateral comparisons approaches for that factor level, is then used to determine the optimal factor levels for multiresponses. Three case studies are provided for illustration; in all, the proposed procedure provides the largest total anticipated improvements. Hence, it should be considered the most effective among all approaches applied in the case studies, including principal component analysis, DEA-based ranking approach, and others. In addition, the proposed procedure is more effective and requires less computational effort when the DMU's efficiency is evaluated by the bilateral comparisons approach instead of the CEBDS approach. In conclusion, the proposed procedure will provide great assistance to practitioners for solving the multiresponse problems in manufacturing applications on the Taguchi method.

This investigation focused on the multi-response optimization of CNC end milling of Aluminium 6063 Alloy material using Grey relational analysis and Taguchi method. Experiments were designed based on L9 Taguchi Orthogonal array, to arrive at an optimum parameter combination within the experimental domain. The spindle speed (S), feed rate (f) and depth of cut (d) which are known to have considerable effect on the selected responses i.e. surface roughness (Ra) and Material removal rate (MRR) and are considered as control parameters. The single objective optimization using Taguchi method more often results in conflicting requirements on control variables. To overcome this challenge, the Taguchi approach followed by Grey relational analysis was applied to solve this multi response optimization problem. The significance of these factors on overall quality characteristics of the milling process has also been evaluated quantitatively with the Analysis of variance method (ANOVA). Optimal results were verified through confirmation experiments. This shows feasibility of the Grey relation analysis in combination with Taguchi technique for continuous improvement in product quality in manufacturing industry and the suitability of the method to optimize the multi objective problems involved in CNC milling.

Polymer-based composites find applications in several areas because of their exceptional properties. This article deals with Taguchi grey relational optimization method of abrasive parameters (load (L), grit size (G) and sliding distance (D)) and their influence on abrasive performance of reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites. A Taguchi L9 orthogonal array was designed, and nine experimental tests were conducted based on the Taguchi designed experiments. A pin-on-disc tribology machine was used for the experiments. The coefficient of friction (µ) and abrasive specific wear rate (Aw) were recorded for each experiment. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to establish the significance and percentage contribution of each parameter affecting the abrasive wear performance. Results from the Taguchi-grey-relational method showed that the optimal combination of parameters was achieved at load of 10 N, grit size of 1000 mesh, and sliding distance of 350 m (coded as L3G1D3). ANOVA findings revealed that a grit size with 67.69 % as the most influential on the abrasive performance of polymer-based composites. Optimization of parameters of central gears of a planetary gearbox was performed in this study. Since the optimization of multi-performance characteristics is more complex compared to optimization of a single-performance characteristics, the Taguchi-Grey analysis was used. That approach combines the Taguchi orthogonal array L27 with the Grey relational analysis to determine the influence of the material, module and gear width on the safety coefficient of the planetary gearbox. A Grey relational grade obtained from the Grey relational analysis is used as the performance characteristics in the Taguchi method and Analysis of variance (ANOVA). The optimal combination of parameters for the safety coefficient values was obtained, when the value of the Grey relational grade is 1. Based on the ANOVA analysis, it was established that the most influential parameter is the module, then the gear width and the least influential one is the material.

Determining the optimal processing parameter is routinely performed in the plastic injection moulding industry as it has a direct and dramatic influence on product quality and costs. In this volatile and fiercely competitive market, traditional trial-and-error is no longer sufficient to meet the challenges of globalization. This paper aims to review the research of the practical use of Taguchi method in the optimization of processing parameters for injection moulding. Taguchi method has been employed with great success in experimental designs for problems with multiple parameters due to its practicality and robustness. However, it is realized that there is no single technique that appears to be superior in solving different kinds of problem. Improvements are to be expected by integrating the practical use of the Taguchi method into other optimization approaches to enhance the efficiency of the optimization process. The review will shed light on the standalone Taguchi method and integration of Taguchi method with various approaches including numerical simulation, grey relational analysis (GRA), principal component analysis (PCA), artificial neural network (ANN), and genetic algorithm (GA). All the features, advantages, and connection of the Taguchi-based optimization approaches are discussed.

The variation of MRR and kerf width with cutting parameters is modeled by using a regression analysis method.

Streszczenie:
The current paper presents the tolerance and parameter design for robust wind turbine. By utilizing the traditional Taguchi method along with its extensions, there is a way of designing a robust wind turbine by considering multiple objectives, constraints and design variables. The concept of design of experiment (DOE) i.e.; Taguchi Method is used to evaluate the constrained and unconstrained problems for the optimization. The current work produces an inexpensive and simpler approach for robust vertical axis wind turbine. DOE (Taguchi Method) of L-9 Orthogonal Array having four parameters along with their three levels i.e; type of NACA aerofoil, Reynolds number, Mach number and Angle of attack are utilized for the optimization and to derive the corresponding optimal values of CL, CD and CP. The parameters like coefficient of lift, drag and power for the wind turbine was determined by Q-Blade software, which is use for designing of wind turbine blades. From the obtained results the inferences drawn were: for CL the major impact was due to Reynolds number and least was due to angle of attack, for CD the major and minor impacting factors were angle of attack and Mach number respectively and for CP the most and least influenced parameters were Reynolds number and Mach number respectively. Also, for obtaining the optimized parameters, the Grey based Taguchi method was utilized which has the combination of orthogonal arrays and grey relational analysis. The analysis showed that the NACA0021 has the maximum lift coefficient of 1.0361 and the minimum drag coefficient of 0.02190 in the case of NACA0021 aerofoil.
