The article is focused on the main tendencies of Russian policy in the Patriarchate of Antioch during the 19th century. Following the traditional support of Orthodoxy, in the situation of concurrence of the Great Powers in the Middle East Russia had to make a revision of the old methods of policy. The journey of Archimandrite Porfirii Uspenskii in 1843 and the foundation of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem in 1847 were aimed at strengthening of Russian positions in the region. The conflicts between the nations in the end of the 1850s and he struggle of the Arabs for church and national independence forced he Russian diplomacy to support them against the Greeks. The struggle ended in the election of an Arab Patriarch at the Antiochian see. The activities of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society for foundation of schools for the Orthodox Arabs as well as financing of the schools of the Patriarchate created a strong base for national education. The peak of Russian influence in Syria is in the beginning of the 20s century: at that time the sums for material support increase enormously. As a whole it was in Syria during the 19th century that Russian policy in the Christian East was most efficient.

This paper examines the influence of Margaret Atwood's concept of feminist dystopia on Nagham Haider's Winter Festivals. The main objective of the research is to explore how Haider's literary works, specifically her Winter Festivals, reflect Atwood's feminist dystopian vision. The study adopts Atwood’s approach of feminist dystopia as represented in The Handmaid's Tale to explore themes of gender oppression, objection of the female body, government control, and patriarchal power structures. In her novel, Haider draws heavily from Atwood's feminist dystopian vision, particularly in her exploration of the intersectional oppression faced by the women during the Syrian Civil War. Haider's novel portrays a society in which women are oppressed and denied agency and autonomy, which is a central concept in Margaret Atwood's feminist dystopia. It can be concluded that Nagham Hayder's Winter Festivals echoes Margaret Atwood's feminist dystopian theory in several ways. Both authors present patriarchal societies where women are oppressed and controlled, with women's bodies commodified and controlled by men. Both novels showcase governments exerting complete control over citizens through surveillance and propaganda. Additionally, they emphasize the significance of women's resistance and solidarity in the face of oppression. Winter Festivals' portrayal of a revolution against the Syrian regime and The Handmaid's Tale's depiction of Handmaid resistance show Hayder's apparent influence from Atwood's feminist dystopian ideas in her writing. Finally, this research contributes to the growing body of scholarship on feminist dystopian literature, shedding light on the global reach and impact of Atwood's vision, as well as the diverse ways in which feminist writers around the world adapt and re-imagine this powerful genre to reflect their unique experiences and perspectives.

The Malanakra Orthodox Syrian Church, which belongs to the family of the Oriental Orthodox Churches, proudly claims to be founded by the Apostle St Thomas. Its history before the fifteenth century is very poorly documented. However, this ancient Christian community was in intermittent relationship with the East Syrian Patriarchate of Seleucia-Ctesiphon, which was discontinued with the arrival of the Portuguese, who forcefully converted it to Roman Catholicism. After a union of fifty-five years, the St Thomas Christians were able to contact the Syrian Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, thanks to the arrival of the Dutch in Malabar and the expulsion of the Portuguese. The introduction of the West Syrian Liturgical rites was completed by the middle of the nineteenth century. The arrival of the Anglican Missionaries in Malabar in the beginning of the nineteenth century provided the Syrian Christians the opportunity for modern English education and thus to make significant contributions to the overall development of Kerala, one of the states of the Indian Republic.

This article will explore the independence that is actually expected by every human being, both women and men in the framework of education under the title, "Impact of Education on Patriarchal As This article would analyze on the true independence that expected by every human both of women and men in frame of Education with the title , “The Impact of Education on Patriarchate Culture and Gender Equality". In this sense, education must be placed in the perspective of liberation. Education is for all and lasts for life. Patriarchate refers to a system of legitimate relations in the fields of law, economy and politics and strengthens domination relations in a society. The research takes place in the mainland area of East Flores with characteristic of a strong patriarchate culture. Observations were made on the family in the interaction of husband and wife dealing with work and tasks in the realm they carried so that the authors were sent to find out whether there is an influence of education on patriarchate culture and therefore patriarchate culture affects gender equality which has an impact on women's participation. The methodology used in this study is interpretive, with a qualitative model and a phenomenological approach. The data collection technique is done through interviews. This study found that patriarchate culture, gender equality and the involvement of East Flores women that were influenced by the higher education received by the community. Thus, this study is different from the one conducted by Shannon McAlister with the title, “Christ as the Woman Seeking Her Lost Coin: Luke 15:8-10 and Divine Sophia in the Latin West” in the Journal of “Theological Studies”, 2018, Vol. 79, no. 1, pp 7-35

This study investigates major challenges encountered by Syrian refugee youth in public high schools in Turkey, focusing on three sources of assessment: the refugee students themselves and their parents and educators. Based on qualitative interpretive research methodology, twenty-three individual semi-structured interviews were conducted. The study simultaneously hears the voices of the Syrian refugee students as well as those of their parents, teachers, and principals. Making friends among Turkish peers, social integration in school and the host society, discrimination, feeling lonely or even depressed, and other displacement problems are the crucial issues identified by this study. While most of the teachers and principals interviewed focused more on academic problems as the main reason for the deterioration of the majority of Syrian youth’s education, refugee students and their parents claimed that the psycho-social challenges are more difficult and thus problematic. Background: Since the outbreak of political violence in Syria in 2011, vast numbers of Syrians have gone to the Jordanian border to escape one of the most devastating civil wars in recent times, and about one-third of the refugees fleeing their countries, i.e., about one million three hundred thousand Syrian refugees, have arrived. These refugees are distributed within the Zaatari, Azraq, Rakban, and Emirati-Jordanian camps. Some of them live outside the scope of these four camps, especially in the governorates of Irbid, Mafraq, Amman, and Zarqa. More than half of these refugees are children. Methods: The research uses the descriptive analysis method, which is based on the detailed description and in-depth analysis of the topic of the study through gathering detailed data related to the research problem, analysing legal texts and relevant information as well as their clear interpretation, concluding with proposing appropriate solutions and recommendations aimed at supporting the right of Syrian refugee children in Jordan to obtain their right to education. Results and Conclusions: The study concluded the importance of the efforts made by the Jordanian government, with the support of donors and humanitarian organisations, regarding assisting Syrian students in obtaining a quality education and its contribution to the steady increase in the percentage of children enrolled in education. On the other hand, the study confirmed the many obstacles and difficulties that impede the education of Syrian refugees in Jordan, such as child labour and early marriage, the lack of appropriate educational infrastructure in light of the scarcity of essential financial resources, the lack of international funding; the limited availability of school, the shortage of qualified human resources to deal with refugee children, and the lack of the necessary documentation to enrol in education. However, despite all the challenges and difficulties related to the education of Syrian refugees in Jordan, the opportunity remains to overcome the difficulties effectively, develop the educational reality, achieve an increase in the rates of absorption in the educational systems, and improve the quality of education provided to these students, which will contribute to the realisation of their dreams and aspirations and help them rebuild their society and host society alike.

The article analyzes the important role of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate (hereinafter referred to as the UOC-KP) in consolidating Ukrainian society. The Christian religion, filled with Ukrainian content and spirit, is an important part of the Ukrainian ethno-cultural space. For many centuries Ukrainian Orthodoxy has actively promoted Ukrainian ethnic, state-building, nation-building and ethnocultural processes and consolidated Ukrainians. However, since the resubordination of the Kyiv Metropolitanate in 1686 to the Moscow Patriarchate, it has become an instrument of assimilation of Ukrainianity and the destruction of Ukrainian identity. For three centuries these destructive and assimilation processes concerning Ukrainian Orthodoxy continued. Since the beginning of the disintegration of the USSR, Ukrainians began a long struggle for the elimination of totalitarian-imperial and spiritualcolonial fetters. The process of restoration of the UOC was headed by Metropolitan Filaret (Denisenko). With the active assistance of Metropolitan Filaret, on June 25, 1992, the UOC-KP was created, and on October 22, 1995, he was elected its primate. At the turn of the millennium, the UOC-KP became one of the catalysts of the consolidation processes in post-colonial Ukraine. The UOC-KP systematically and purposefully implemented the Ukrainian language, the state outlook, the national-patriotic education among the clergy and its congregation, thereby bringing together Ukrainians and forming from the post-Soviet population conscious citizens of the Ukrainian state. The UOC-KP consistently consolidated Ukrainian society, united Ukrainian politicians with a state vision and, eventually, achieved its first victory. On October 11, 2018, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate adopted a fateful decision to grant Ukrainian Orthodoxy the autocephaly.

This article is driven by an interest to explore the role of local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) that deal with Syrian refugees in Lebanon seeing the void left by the Lebanese weak state to cope with this situation. How the Syrian conflict has affected the civil society landscape in Lebanon and how the inflow of international aid has affected the work of this local CSOs, as well as, their relationship with Lebanese state authorities on the national and local levels are examined. To this extent, the ways in which the management of Syrian refugees by local CSOs and CBOs has been affected by external factors, including the Lebanese government policies and the role of international organizations (EU, UN) in managing the crisis in Lebanon are examined. Since the beginning of the Syrian conflict and the influx of millions of refugees into Lebanon, the civil society sector in Lebanon has undergone significant transformations. To cope with the overwhelming number of Syrians living in Lebanon, Lebanese civil society has expanded with the creation of new CSOs as well as the introduction of additional programs and projects in existing CSOs to assist refugees. These civil society organizations fill a void created by the Lebanese government in its unwillingness or inability to assist with the refugee response in the areas of healthcare, education and vocational training.

The number of Syrian students in higher education in Turkey is increasing every year. In the 2019-2020 academic year, this number has reached 37,236. During this period, Harran University ranks first among 209 universities with 2,677 Syrian students, with the highest number of Syrian students studying in the university. One of the most fundamental facts inherent in migration is the human encounter experienced by the migrants and host communities. Both communities are affected by this encounter in various ways. In this study, social inclusion problems faced by Syrian asylum seeker higher education students throughout their education and daily life have been highlighted, and an evaluation has been made on the social experiences and problems faced by Syrian students studying at Harran University. For this purpose, two focus group meetings were held, each with six participants. The data obtained from focus group interviews were analyzed within the framework of various basic problems such as acceptance, social interaction, uncertainty, foreignness, stigmatization, and marginalization. The main problem of this study is that Syrian students have a high desire to participate in society and live together, but they continue to experience problems such as marginalization, exclusion, and deprivation of psycho-social support in different ways.

Abstract In the Arabic-speaking mahjar (diaspora), the plight of the working poor was the focus of women’s philanthropy. Scholarship on welfare relief in the interwar Syrian, Lebanese, and Palestinian diaspora currently situates it within a gendered politics of benevolence. This article reconsiders that frame and argues for a class-centered reassessment of “ladies aid” politics exploring the intersections of women’s relief with proletarian mutual aid strategies. Founded in 1917, the Syrian Ladies Aid Society (SLAS) of Boston provided food, shelter, education, and employment to Syrian workers. SLAS volunteers understood their efforts as mitigating the precarities imposed on Syrian workers by the global capitalist labor system. Theirs was both a women’s organization and a proletarian movement led by Syrian women. Drawing from SLAS records and the Syrian American press, the article centers Syrian American women within processes of working-class formation and concludes that labor history of the interwar mahjar requires focus on spaces of social reproduction beyond the factory floor.

The Ottoman reforms of the mid-nineteenth century accelerated the process of opening up Syria to European travellers and traders, and gave Syria's Jews access to European Jewish communities. The resulting influx of Western ideas led to a decline in the traditional economy. It also allowed for the introduction of Western education, influenced the structure and the administration of Jewish society in Syria, and changed the balance of the relationship between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Initially Syria's Jewish communities flourished in these new circumstances, but there was a developing recognition that their future lay overseas. After the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, the bankruptcy of the Ottoman Empire in 1875, and the suspension of the Ottoman constitution in 1878, this feeling intensified. A process of decline set in that ultimately culminated in large-scale Jewish emigration. Thereon, the future for Syrian Jews lay in the West, not the East. This book covers Jewish community life, the legal status of Jews in Syria, their relationship with their Muslim and Christian neighbours, and their links with the West. It draws on a range of archival material in six languages, including Jewish, Christian Arab, and Muslim Arab sources, Ottoman and European documents, consular reports, travel accounts, and reports from the contemporary press and by emissaries to Syria of the Alliance Israélite Universelle. Rabbinic sources are particularly important in opening a window onto Syrian Jewish life and concerns. Together these sources bring to light an enormous amount of material and provide a broad, multifaceted perspective on the Syrian Jewish community.

Jordan stands in the middle of a turbulent region, experiencing substantial refugee flows and economic challenges due to the conflict and insecurity of its neighbors. While the Jordanian economy and labor market in 2010, prior to the refugee crisis, had been shifting in a positive direction, it was an unanswered question how the labor market is faring during these challenging times. The fielding of the new Jordan Labor Market Panel Survey (JLMPS) 2016 wave offers an unprecedented opportunity to assess the challenges Jordan is facing across a number of markets and services. This book leverages the new, nationally representative data to begin addressing key economic and policy questions. The chapters of the book are organized into three parts, the first focused on key indicators of the labor market: labor supply, job creation, wages and inequality, and own account work (self-employed and employers). The second section focuses on migrants and refugees in Jordan, including an in-depth examination of the wellbeing of Syrian refugees in Jordan. The third section examines transitions across the life course in Jordan, including education, the school-to-work transition, marriage and fertility, housing and new households, and social insurance and retirement. Together these chapters show how Jordan’s economy has fared during challenging times and provide insight into important challenges Jordan’s economy and society face.

Abstract The Syrian civil war has caused thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions since 2011. Turkey currently serves as the new home to over 3.6 million refugees. Resettlement is particularly challenging for Syrian women. In addition to their patriarchal-assigned gender roles, women refugees encounter multidimensional difficulties. Unlike their male counterparts, they face overwhelming language barriers due to culturally imposed restrictions to their education in Turkey. Previous studies indicate women refugees have low levels of well-being and life satisfaction, as well as increased risk of depression. This chapter examines the types, practices, and benefits of leisure participation among Syrian refugee women in Turkey. Its findings reveal that throughout the resettlement process, leisure plays many roles, such as relieving trauma, increasing well-being and mental health, and supporting their integration into society and the labour market. Despite the abundance of learning opportunities, research on the outcomes of their participation is limited. Therefore, future studies should also focus on the effects of their participation in education to address the needs of Syrian women refugees. However, further research should be conducted on participation constraints to establish ways of encouraging refugee women's involvement in educational activities.

Abstract Since 2011, millions of Syrian people have had to leave their country and seek shelter in neighbouring countries and in Europe. Forced migration or displacement creates multiple vulnerabilities while trying to settle in a new environment. Socioeconomic, cultural and psychological vulnerabilities hinder them from participating actively in society. Higher education is one of the main ways that refugees and displaced people cling to hope for a better life. Their access to and participation in higher education has been a challenging route for many reasons both for themselves and also for the higher education systems and universities in their host countries. Turkey has a unique place in regard to Syrian refugees. It hosts the largest refugee population in the world with 3.6 million Syrians and 500,000 asylum seekers from other countries, such as Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Turkey has a young population with the 5–17 age group comprising 21% of the population, but the Syrian population is much younger as its rate is 30%. Turkey is also the country with the largest student population in the European Higher Education Area. The incomparable magnitude of the situation, among others, plays a crucial role in developing new integration policies. In spite of the ongoing difficulties and challenges, the past nine years proved a success story in protection, social cohesion and integration of these newcomers. Turkey has been suffering from some challenges, such as a supply and demand imbalance in higher education. Demographic factors, shortcomings of the higher education system and the unemployment rate among university graduates have been some long-term challenges for Turkish higher education. Moreover, a common misconception in public opinion, that Syrian refugees are admitted to Turkish universities without fulfilling the requirements, adds new challenges for future policies. Both the sheer number of migrants and also the emergency of the situation during this migration flow necessitated some action to be taken in the area of higher education. In a country like Turkey, where there is high competition between students to pass the nationwide university selection exam each year, encouraging Syrian students to access higher education seems to be an area for discussion. This paper is based on the fieldwork of research conducted in the context of the Hopes-MADAD project entitled “Elite Dialogue II- Dialogue with Syrian Refugees in Turkey through Syrian Academics and Students” in 2019. The main research subject is which types of vulnerabilities Syrian university students face, and how they can integrate into society in Turkey. New approaches and definitions are needed to touch the actual needs of the refugees to be actively involved into society. Nevertheless, research on the higher education practices of vulnerable groups in general, and of Syrian students in particular, is largely missing.

AbstractSocial integration of refugees is a major challenge for any country that hosts sizable refugee communities. Recently, Turkey has joined the ranks of such countries as it was transformed to become the country with the highest number of refugees in the world through an inflow of over 3.6 million mostly young and uneducated asylum-seekers from Syria in a matter of a few years. This chapter presents a critical analysis of the Turkish adult education (AE) sector by applying the concept of active participatory citizenship in the context of the current refugee crisis with a focus on its role in helping this vulnerable community to become active members of the society. This chapter argues that AE and Lifelong Learning (LLL) programs have the potential to empower Syrian refugees in such a way to make them into active members, contributing social, economic and cultural ways in Turkish society. To make its arguments, the chapter firstly provides a brief analysis of Turkey’s reform agenda in the field of AE since 1990s. By drawing on selected statistics it highlights the shortcomings in Turkey with respect to developing sustainable and gender sensitive AE programs, especially for young adults. Secondly, it investigates the major legal and institutional developments in Turkey since the first wave of the refugees entering to Turkey after beginning of the Syrian Civil War in 2011. Lastly, it will provide an analysis of how new AE programs for refugees are designed, which are characterised by a holistic view of social inclusion and target specific groups of refugees under the pressure of multiple vulnerabilities.

This chapter discusses how during the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, when processes of modernisation, pre-national aspirations and gender transformations took place, there was growing awareness of the importance of children’s education in the regions of Greater Syria and Egypt among male educators, but more importantly among women educators, such as Labiba Hashim (1882–1952). The chapter argues that whereas men educators were in favour of children’s education because it benefitted the family, society and the nation, women educators challenged and broadened the scope of children’s education in general and girls’ education in particular to turn them (and themselves) not only into educated mothers, but also into educated women. Via children’s education, women transformed attitudes toward themselves and redefined their place and their children’s place in the patriarchal family and society.

This chapter will discuss why countries that emerge from prolonged civil wars need to provide their citizens with adequate mental health services and make a reference to Syria as a case study. It will demonstrate an association between mental disorders and violence which threatens the stability, national security, and the aspired recovery of the country. The chapter will refer to young people as they are the future in process and the makers of the future change in Syria. However, rather than listing or discussing solutions, the chapter will take a community approach to stigma and discuss how a shift in the way the Syrian society views and approaches mental illness is necessary to alleviate stigma and its impact. The chapter will also show how minority groups among the Syrian youth are subject to an aggravated level of stigma. In doing so, the chapter will address various social concepts such as youth, masculinity, community, and society.

The literature is dominated by the studies on refugee studies since it is a current issue with great importance. In addition, this group of people leaving their homes due to serious human rights violations need to occupy a great space in the policy agendas and to be studied to enlighten policymakers and authorities in this fragile process of handling the issue of immigration. This necessitates higher education institutions involvement for a healthier and more systematic process of adaptation. Among the large group of refugees, Syrians—upon the break of the civil war in 2011—are the most visible group in Turkey. Witnessing the swiftly changing socio-economic dynamics in the world, Turkey is now home to a considerable number of Syrians. Furthermore, the intersection of Syrian refugees and the Turkish society has generated an intercultural space impacting on their SLA experiences, which is complicated by the process of adjustment concerning the two groups—those “uprooted” from their homes and the host society.

This chapter examines the Jewish minority in Syria in 1840, when the Damascus affair took place and ended when economic disaster overtook Damascus Jewry. It highlights profound changes in Ottoman imperial rule and society in Syria from 1840, when Ottoman rule was reinstated. It also analyses shifts in Jewish society against the broad background of the political, social, and economic changes that took place in Syria. The chapter looks at the difference between the Jewish communities of Damascus and Aleppo with regard to social structure, economic endeavour, communal leadership and organization, and education. It recounts Jewish merchants in both Damascus and Aleppo in 1840 that engaged in international trade via the camel caravans that travelled between the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea.

The chapter connects the 2011 uprising to the long-term transformations of Syrian society which can be encapsulated under the rubric of social change (education, demographic transition, and urbanisation). It also links the uprising to changes in the authoritarian rule of the Assad regime in the broader context of globalisation. Against this background, the chapter traces the ways in which the uprising unfolded as a popular movement throughout the country. The chapter explores the geographies of this mobilisation, its actors and many modalities, in order to understand the characteristics of the repression and the subsequent war. The fragmentation of the country along internal fronts is rooted in this geography of uprising and repression.

The Higher Education is an important and basic stage of building a society and the global trends in education by the e-learning process. It is about collaborative resources building, research, feedback, by supporting creativity, flexibility and individuality. This paper presents the e-Learning experiences of technology and strategy in the effort to implement a competency educational program, in Syria and Turkey, with focus on higher education. It aims to improve the electronic teaching methods and to establish modern intelligent classrooms. This article presents experiences related to the management, organization and technology of the design and development processes of the e-learning services in the open education system in Syria (Syrian Virtual University, Damascus) (with 14 years' experience) and Turkey (Ankara University and Istanbul University). The structure of the Open Education e-Learning Portal where all the e-learning services are presented altogether is extremely flexible. In consequence of special features for learners in many countries, which applied e-Learning phase in Higher Education, it offers new visions, increase responsibility and self-discipline, also it exists some limitations as: long time spent in front of computer, increasing plagiarism, impersonal relations with universities. Results quantifies the improved performance of the participants and efficacy when it comes to evaluate the training process. Overall, the facts recorded can be considered a model of good practice. It concludes that e-Learning has many significant advantages for the learner as: Accessibility and Mobility, Cost and Selection, Higher Retention, Global Opportunities. Wherefore it seems to be very convenient for learners, as well as for universities and it offers strategies that could be carried.
