Abstract The introduction can be considered as a framework for and as a series of critical comments on some of the texts. Viewing Industry, Tourism and Finance as part of the same economic problem, the author brings new elements into the discussion stressing classic weaknesses in the structure of Montreal's economy and emphasizes the fact that his inherent frailty should not be blurred by the satisfactory 1973 conjunctival situation. Two broad policy choices are presented in the form of alternative scenarios: the first is an extrapolation and the other of completely altered industrial policies. The choice of the latter is described as being the only realistic alternative. In the field of tourism, the obvious contradiction between government policies and the facts of the situation stemming from the analysis of tourist behavior is discussed. Concrete proposals are spelled out so as to enhance the regional potential for tourism. The financial sector is evaluated on the efficiency of its performance in mobilizing funds for general investment purposes and also, more specifically, for capital ventures type of financing. Finally, the future of Montreal as a prime financial center is assessed with respect to the national banking structure.

À partir d’un tryptique décrivant la relation de franchise comme « une relation contractuelle, une relation d’affaires et une relation intuitu personae », nous proposons une synthèse narrative de ce corpus. La contribution est double : donner du sens à cette littérature et identifier les questions en suspens susceptibles de nourrir des travaux académiques futurs.

Cet article s’inscrit dans le contexte des débats concernant la mission des universités et l’évaluation de leur performance. Il a pour objectif d’illustrer le recours au processus d’anasynthèse comme moyen de valider une typologie des conceptions des universités élaborée en vue d’évaluer leur performance. L’anasynthèse, terme formé des mots analyse et synthèse désignant le processus général de développement de modèles suggéré par Silvern en 1972, s’articule autour des étapes suivantes : l’analyse d’une situation de départ, l’élaboration d’une synthèse à partir de cette analyse, la formulation d’un prototype de modèle, la simulation ou validation de ce prototype en vue finalement de la formulation d’un modèle optimal. L’originalité de cette recherche et son apport à l’avancement des connaissances résident notamment dans le fait d’adapter l’anasynthèse à une validation rigoureuse et systématique d’un référentiel d’évaluation de l’enseignement supérieur. Tout en étant susceptible d’aider à la prise de décision en gestion, la typologie originale qui s’en est dégagée pourra servir de fondements à des recherches subséquentes propres à l’élaboration d’un modèle complet d’évaluation de la performance des universités.

Le concept de performance en tant que notion fondamentale en sciences de gestion, a fait l’objet d’une littérature intense depuis plusieurs décennies. Tout un corpus théorique fondé sur la finance, le rendement des actifs, des passifs et des ratios de rentabilité, avait été élaboré pour évaluer la performance du secteur privé. Plus récemment, la notion de performance a suscité un regain d’intérêt en lien avec la mondialisation de la concurrence. L’objet de cet article est de faire une synthèse de la littérature sur les différentes approches de mesure de la performance. Le but est de contribuer à rendre intelligible les facteurs de compréhension de ce qui détermine qu’une organisation à but non lucratif est efficace et performante.

Résumé La mesure de la performance des gestionnaires de portefeuille est un sujet d’importance majeure en finance. Les gestionnaires de portefeuille prétendent produire une distribution de rendements « supérieure » à celle d’un portefeuille non géré. Dans un marché où les acteurs sont rationnels, une performance supérieure est généralement associée à la possession d’information supérieure. Les mesures traditionnelles de performance où la relation rendement-risque est l’outil de mesure de base ne tiennent pas compte de l’asymétrie de l’information. De plus, le modèle d’équilibre de marchés financiers (CAPM) a été récemment remis en question, comme outil servant à la mesure de performance. Des modèles tenant compte explicitement de l’information ont donc été développés pour servir de cadre à cette mesure. Le but de cet article est de faire une synthèse de la littérature théorique portant sur la mesure de performance des gestionnaires de portefeuille en mettant l’accent sur les modèles récemment suggérés qui tiennent compte explicitement de l’information des gestionnaires.

Le défi majeur du monde agricole aujourd’hui est de réduire de façon drastique l’usage des pesticides tout en maintenant un niveau de rendement, de qualité et de rentabilité satisfaisant. Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, nous avons étudié l’usage des produits phytosanitaires dans le Bordelais. Nous avons ensuite évalué les performances des systèmes viticoles existants afin de construire des scénarios de changement de pratiques pour réduire le recours aux pesticides, et préserver l’environnement et la santé humaine. Trente-huit viticulteurs pratiquant différents modes de conduite ont été interrogés. Les systèmes ont été évalués en utilisant deux méthodes d’analyse multicritère d’aide à la décision appartenant à la famille des méthodes ELECTRE : ELECTRE Tri-C et ELECTRE III. Sept critères d’évaluation ont été retenus, dont trois pour les performances socioéconomiques (rentabilité économique, charge de travail, complexité du système viticole) et quatre pour les performances environnementales (pression phytosanitaire, écotoxicité des pesticides, pratiques agroécologiques, niveau de la dérive des produits). Trois scénarios de changement de pratiques ont été construits en intégrant les bonnes pratiques identifiées sur le terrain : un scénario conventionnel raisonné optimisé (scénario Raisonné-Max) ; deux scénarios en démarche agroécologique : Agroécologie (avec usage optimisé de produits de synthèse) et Agroécologie-Bio (sans produits de synthèse). ELECTRE Tri-C a permis d’affecter chaque système viticole ainsi que les trois scénarios dans l’une des quatre catégories prédéfinies de performance. Puis ELECTRE III les a classés dans chaque catégorie. On note une supériorité de la performance socio-éco-environnementale des scénarios agroécologiques et des systèmes biologiques. Cela tient principalement à un niveau de valorisation de la production plus élevé dans ces systèmes et à un niveau de pression phytosanitaire plus faible lié aux pratiques plus favorables au renforcement de la biodiversité. Ces résultats axés sur des démarches concrètes et réalistes constituent des modèles adaptables à des exploitations viticoles conventionnelles.

Cet article est basé sur une revue sélective d’études empiriques axées sur la problématique de la planification dans les PME. Les résultats d’études récentes ayant particulièrement essayé d’établir la relation entre les activités de planification et la performance dans les petites et moyennes entreprises sont présentés et discutés. Quelques études traitent de la planification en général ; certaines font la distinction appropriée entre les activités de planification stratégique et celles de nature opérationnelle. Les regroupements effectués ici tiennent compte de ces précisions qui favorisent une meilleure compréhension du phénomène dans les PME. Quelques conclusions synthétisent les résultats relatifs à l’utilité des diverses formes de planification dans les firmes de moins grande envergure. Les auteurs offrent également quelques suggestions dans le but de faire progresser ce domaine de recherche.

Quatre-vingt-dix-sept pour cent des entreprises ont déjà eu recours à des équipes inter-fonctionnelles pour développer leurs nouveaux produits. Sous quelles conditions cette stratégie est-elle efficace ? L’objectif de cet article est double. Il propose en premier lieu une synthèse des mécanismes par lesquels l’inter-fonctionnalité conduirait à un surcroît de performance. Il met en second lieu en évidence, auprès d’un échantillon de 157 chefs de produits, que la familiarité de l’équipe est centrale pour que l’inter-fonctionnalité induise le surcroît de performance espéré. Les conséquences managériales de ces résultats sont finalement exposées.

Cette thèse d'informatique musicale explore d'une part la performance intrumentale et propose d'autre part des algorithmes de synthèse additive rapide. Un état de l'art sur l'analyse du jeu instrumental est dabord réalisé, explorant les différentes composantes de l'interprétation musicale. Une étude sur l'importance du doigté au piano est alors présentée. La performance pianistique est ainsi analysée pour mettre en évidence l'influence du doigté sur la performance. Le jeu académique au saxophone est aussi analysé, afin d'évaluer le niveau technique de saxophonistes en fonction de l'évolution de leurs paramètres sonores. Une méthode automatique de cette évaluation est alors proposée. Dans une deuxième partie, nous explorons des algorithmes de synthèse additive rapide. Nous étudions d'abord la possibilité d'avoir recours à des techniques non linéaires. Nous présentons ensuite PASS, une nouvelle méthode où des polynomes replacent des fonctions sinusoïdales pour accélérer la synthèse sonore. Une application de la méthode PASS est finalement présentée, permettant la synthèse rapide et réaliste de surfaces océaniques.

Depuis quelques années, une nouvelle gamme de matériaux polyamides hautes performances voit le jour pour des secteurs clés comme l’automobile. Par exemple, ces nouveaux matériaux sont destinés grâce à leur faible densité à alléger les pièces et donc à réduire la consommation de carburant. Les propriétés recherchées sont avant tout une grande stabilité dimensionnelle, une résistance aux hautes températures et une mise en forme facile. L’objectif est la synthèse de ces copolyamides obtenus à partir d’une diamine aliphatique, d’un amino-acide d’origine renouvelable et d’acide téréphtalique. Une augmentation du taux de 6.T au sein du système 11/6.T entraîne alors une augmentation des caractéristiques thermiques mais une perte des propriétés mécaniques. Pour pallier cela, l’objectif suivant est l’amélioration de la ductilité du copolymère en abaissant la température de transition vitreuse mais en gardant des propriétés thermiques élevées. L’intérêt s’est porté sur l’ajout de comonomères ramifiés au sein du système étudié pour agir par plastification interne. Ainsi, l’ajout de comonomères au sein du système entraîne une amélioration des propriétés mécaniques avec une légère baisse du module de traction et une augmentation de l’allongement à la rupture. De plus, il a été mis en évidence une diminution de la reprise en eau lors de l’augmentation du taux molaire de comonomères au sein du système. En conclusion, l’introduction des comonomères permet d’obtenir des nouveaux polyphtalamides avec des propriétés thermiques élevées et des propriétés mécaniques et de reprise en eau améliorées par effet de plastification interneIn recent years, a new class of crystalline polyamides has been commercialized. These materials known as polyphthalamides contain aromatic groups in the polymer backbone. The aim of the project is to obtain polyphthalamides from raw materials of renewable origin. So, in addition to the aromatic group(s), polyphthalamides are synthesized from an aliphatic diamine and a long-chain monomer of renewable origin. The objectives are to provide novel semi-crystalline, melt processible, partially aromatic copolyamides with high melting point, high glass transition temperatures, low moisture absorption and high dimensional stability. In this study, polyphthalamides with a variable amount of 11 (derived from condensation of 11-amino undecanoic acid) and 6,T units (derived from condensation of hexamethylene diamine and terephthalic acid) are synthetized and it is tried to assess, using thermal analysis, the effect of 6,T units content on the melting point (Tm) and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the resultant copolyamides. As the 6,T unit content is increased, crystalline copolyamides are obtained having a high melting point and a high glass transition temperature. Characterization of molar mass is also performed to check the progress of the synthesis. This work points out that the addition of 6,T units to linear polyamides increases thermal properties. Another possibility can be the addition of various other branched monomers to evaluate their influence on mechanical and thermal properties. The aim is to keep high thermal properties with improving the ductibility of copolyamides. These branched comonomers will act as intern plasticizers. The increase of the comonomers amount in copolymers drives to an improvement of mechanical properties and a decrease of water absorption

Le projet fondateur de l'acroe est le developpement et la promotion d'outils de simulation informatique d'objets du monde reel par la modelisation des phenomenes physiques qui le composent et le regissent. Ce projet donne naissance a des recherches sur trois axes : la definition d'un formalisme de conception modulaire des modeles physiques (cordis-anima), la conception de logiciels implementant ce formalisme et la recherche d'outils d'interaction homme-machine a haute performance. Mon etude porte sur la realisation d'un logiciel de simulation en temps reel exploitant au maximum l'architecture teluris composee d'un ordinateur powerchallenge multiprocesseur de silicon graphics avec sa carte video, d'une carte d'entree-sortie sonore specifique et du transducteur gestuel retroactif de l'acroe. La premiere partie du document propose une etude de la mise en forme algorithmique du formalisme cordis-anima dans tous ses aspects : caracterisation des modules et placement de leur execution dans des algorithmes sequentiels en respectant le flux de donnees circulant entre ces modules pour des simulations mono a multifrequence et mono a multiprocesseur. La deuxieme partie presente l'analyse des performances de calcul des dispositifs d'interaction et de la machine de calcul. Nous y observons en particulier le debit de communication entre ces elements ainsi qu'entre les processeurs et la memoire de la machine de calcul et par extension entre les processeurs pour une simulation multiprocesseur par memoire partagee. Y sont aussi developpes quelques elements decrivant le comportement du compilateur de langage c du systeme qui nous ont permis d'ecrire du code a haut rendement pour les processeurs mips r8000. Enfin, dans une troisieme partie, je decris l'implementation du moteur de calcul faite en fonction des observations de performance effective et de la compilation des diverses experimentations de modelisation et de simulation constituant le patrimoine de l'acroe.

Les travaux de recherche présentés dans cette thèse s'inscrivent dans le cadre de la visualisation réaliste et interactive de modèles numériques de très grande taille pour la réalité virtuelle. Nous montrons ainsi comment il est possible de calculer et de visualiser des solutions de radiosité très précises, sur une machine multi-processeur à mémoire partagée distribuée équipée de matériel graphique, dans des environnements immersifs. Tout d'abord, nous présentons des techniques de partitionnement et d'ordonnancement pour la parallélisation d'un algorithme de radiosité hiérarchique à base d'ondelettes; celles-ci permettent une excellente répartition de la charge de travail entre les processeurs tout en garantissant la localité des données mémoire. Nous abordons simultanément un certain nombre de problèmes liés à la gestion de la mémoire en parallèle au sein d'un large espace d'adressage virtuel partagé. Nous voyons ensuite comment il est possible d'intégrer, dans le calcul parallèle, l'accélération des requêtes de visibilité en utilisant le matériel graphique. Enfin, la visualisation efficace des solutions de radiosité calculées est entreprise dans différents environnements graphiques haute-performance, qui permettent d'ajouter au vol des effets optiques non pris en compte lors du calcul initial.

Ce travail concerne le greffage de divers complexes organometalliques de type metallocene, ou derives, sur des billes de silice, en vue d'une nouvelle application comme phases stationnaires de type accepteur d'electrons en chromatographie liquide haute performance (clhp). De plus, pour la premiere fois, de nombreuses caracterisations physico-chimiques de ces materiaux hybrides organometalliques/inorganiques ont ete mises en uvre pour determiner l'efficacite et l'homogeneite du greffage. La richesse de la chimie organometallique et la grande variete des complexes ont permis d'ajuster la formulation des phases stationnaires a un probleme specifique de separation. L'influence de la nature du metal, de sa charge, de la nature des ligands environnants ou du mode de greffage sur les capacites chromatographiques des phases stationnaires a ete evaluee. Ces nouvelles phases stationnaires organometalliques se sont averees tres efficaces pour la separation de polluants organiques, tels que les hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques (hap). Une phase stationnaire organometallique chirale a egalement ete synthetisee en vue de separer des melanges d'enantiomeres de molecules therapeutiques.

Cette thèse présente plusieurs travaux visant à l'amélioration de la synthèse architecturale réalisée à l'aide de l'outil de synthèse de haut niveau AMICAL. Un point clé de ce travail est la notion d'interactivité. Le processus de synthèse se décompose en un ensemble de raffinements successifs. L'utilisateur a la possibilité d'intervenir au cours de ces différentes étapes et d'agir manuellement, ou au contraire de laisser se dérouler seules l'ensemble des étapes tout en gardant une vision claire des actions effectuées. Ce dernier a de plus le choix entre plusieurs styles architecturaux qu'il pourra implémenter à son gré, ce qui autorise une grande flexibilité. Les points principaux abordés au cours de cette thèse sont les suivants: Les étapes et modèles successifs de raffinement au cours du processus de synthèse: chaque sous-tâche engendre un modèle architectural intermédiaire à partir duquel la sous-tâche suivante pourra agir. La notion d'interactivité: celle-ci inclue la mise au point d'un modèle de performance permettant d'estimer la qualité du circuit synthètisé, et permet au concepteur d'être le véritable acteur de la synthèse tout en l'assistant lors de la prise de décisions. La précision numérique et le temps d'exécution des programmes utilisant l'arithmétique flottante sont des enjeux majeurs dans de nombreuses applications de l'informatique. L'amélioration de ces critères fait l'objet de nombreux travaux de recherche. Cependant, nous constatons que l'amélioration de la précision diminue les performances et inversement. En effet, les techniques d'amélioration de la précision, telles que les expansions ou les compensations, augmentent le nombre de calculs que devra exécuter un programme. Plus ce coût est élevé, plus les performances sont diminuées. Ce travail de thèse présente une méthode d'amélioration automatique de la précision prenant en compte l'effet négatif sur les performances. Pour cela nous automatisons les transformations sans erreur des opérations élémentaires car cette technique présente un fort potentiel de parallélisme. Nous proposons de plus des stratégies d'optimisation permettant une amélioration partielle des programmes afin de contrôler plus finement son impact sur les performances. Des compromis entre performances et précision sont alors assurés par la synthèse de code. Nous présentons de plus, à l'aide d'outils implantant toutes les contributions de ce travail, de nombreux résultats expérimentauxNumerical accuracy and execution time of programs using the floating-point arithmetic are major challenges in many computer science applications. The improvement of these criteria is the subject of many research works. However we notice that the accuracy improvement decrease the performances and conversely. Indeed, improvement techniques of numerical accuracy, such as expansions or compensations, increase the number of computations that a program will have to execute. The more the number of computations added is, the more the performances decrease. This thesis work presents a method of accuracy improvement which take into account the negative effect on the performances. So we automatize the error-free transformations of elementary floating-point operations because they present a high potential of parallelism. Moreover we propose some transformation strategies allowing partial improvement of programs to control more precisely the impact on execution time. Then, tradeoffs between accuracy and performances are assured by code synthesis. We present also several experimental results with the help of tools implementing all the contributions of our works

Ces travaux de thèse ont porté sur l’étude du système LaCoO3 élaboré sous forme de couches minces par pulvérisation cathodique magnétron réactive. La première partie de ce travail est dédiée à l’étude des paramètres de synthèse permettant l’obtention d’un film homogène cristallin. Les influences sur la transition thermochrome des paramètres de traitement thermique et de la pression de dépôt sont discutées. Nous avons montré qu’il était possible de contrôler le rapport entre les phases cubique et rhomboédrique ainsi que la taille des cristallites en optimisant les paramètres de synthèse. Dans une seconde partie, nous avons étudié en détail les changements de propriétés de nos échantillons à l’aide du rayonnement synchrotron et de la microscopie électronique en transmission. Nos mesures ont montré que la phase cubique et la taille de cristallites influent le spin des atomes de cobalt et donc sur la nature des liaisons Co-O. Nous avons mis en évidence qu’une microstructure fine et une phase rhomboédrique augmentent l’effet thermochrome et l’amplitude optique de la transition grâce à une augmentation de la densité de population au niveau de Fermi et une diminution du gap optiqueThe present PhD work is focused on the study of the LaCoO3 system deposited as a thin film by reactive magnetron sputtering. The first part of this work is dedicated to the influence of the deposition parameters on the film structure. The influences of heat treatment parameters and deposition total pressure on the thermochromic transition are discussed. We have shown that it is possible to control the ratio between the cubic and rhombohedral phases as well as the size of the crystallites through the control of our parameters. In a second part, we studied in detail the properties changes using synchrotron radiation and transmission electron microscopy. Our measurements have shown that the cubic phase and the crystallites size influence the spin of cobalt atoms and therefore the nature of the Co-O bonds. We have shown that a fine microstructure and a rhombohedral phase increase the thermochromic effect and the optical switch of the transition thanks to an increase in the population density at the Fermi level and a decrease of the optical gap

The Research on Open Educational Resources for Development (ROER4D) project seeks to build on and contribute to the body of research on how OER can help to improve access, enhance quality and reduce the cost of education in the Global South. This volume examines aspects of educator and student adoption of OER and engagement in Open Educational Practices (OEP) in secondary and tertiary education as well as teacher professional development in 21 countries in South America, Sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia. One of Tudor’s last projects used an instrument custom-made for him using the neural network chip that had just been developed. The Neural Synthesizer began as an attempt to build a universal instrument that would synthesize the proliferation of his modular devices. But the actual mechanism of the analog chip, which happened to be an extensive array of amplifiers, shifted the nature of the endeavor, causing a return to the no-input works from the 1970s. In this way, the neural network instrument, used against its usual purpose of extracting patterns from past examples, nonetheless found a strange connection with reminiscences of Tudor’s own past. The analyses of Neural Syntheses and Neural Network Plus, two series of works Tudor made using his new synthesizer, further brings up the issue of memory concerning the performance of his music, which is different every time yet open to revivals, something he tried to capture by setting a number to each performance. This also connects to the problem of how Tudor thought of passing his music on to others so that they could be performed in his absence, a natural concern in the last years of his life, but also something that reflected his lifelong interest in the role of memory and reminiscence in music.

Les propriétés biologiques des céramiques phosphocalciques, dont l’hydroxyapatite, de composition chimique proche de celle de l’os minéral ne sont pas suffisantes pour répondre à l’ensemble des besoins en médecine régénérative osseuse. Pour en améliorer les performances biologiques plusieurs leviers d’actions existent à différents niveaux de la chaîne d’élaboration de ces biomatériaux. Or, chaque maillon de cette chaîne correspond à un champ disciplinaire spécifique lié à un domaine scientifique différent (ex : chimie des matériaux vs. biologie). L’organisation de la recherche menée à l’IRCER autour de cette thématique est donc le reflet de cette transdisciplinarité. Elle implique une perméabilité et un dialogue constant entre les disciplines et permet la maîtrise de la recherche depuis la synthèse du matériau jusqu’à l’évaluation de ses performances biologiques.

Abstract Oil and gas operators tend to have engineering capability within their organization; however, this capability is one of the difficult attributes to quantify its achievements, scale their performance metrics and measure their performance within specific value stream. This paper will define the types of engineering capabilities and categorize them according to the functions performed into three categories. Furthermore, this paper continues to develop performance metrics measuring each category capabilities in accordance with business strategy perspectives of Profitability, End User and Stakeholders, Internal Processes and Growth & Learning. Establishing engineering sub-organization in national entities and oil and gas operation & production companies is implicitly decided by their management needs and expectations, e.g. technical assurance for compliance with regulations and standards, quality control on the delivered work, in-house design capability for accelerated design and project delivery, innovation and technology adoption, technical expertise to support operation in improving efficiency and reduce downtime, training and development. The first challenge starts with the shortfall in articulating these companies’ management needs and expectations toward their engineering sub-organization and correlate them to the business strategic syntheses. The second challenge comes to map these business strategy perspectives (syntheses) to the applicable strategic objectives. Then, it comes to formulate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) or aggregated KPIs to evaluate the strategic objectives by measuring these performance metrics via their formulas. These formulas are fed with corporate information and data whereas to their outputs scaled and target defined. In process of developing engineering organization categorization and formulating KPIs to each category, a number of key performance indicators (KPIs) are generated to evaluate the categorized sub organization effectiveness based on their organization operating model. Introduction of these KPIs gave better vigilance and assurance to quality of work: this is measured through the number of errors, defects, reworks or scope carryover to next phase that occur in the engineering projects. Also, profitability metric is impacted by number of design and engineering variation claims and their value. While the innovation and continuous Improvement indicator will show the ability of the engineering organization to innovate and improve its processes, methods, and tools. By tracking and analyzing these KPIs, it is possible to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the engineering sub-organization and identify areas for improvement and which engineering categorization most suitable and set the minimum requirements. These generated metrics are driving improvement behaviors and norms within these engineering sub-organizations. Overall, engineering teams are essential for oil and gas production companies to achieve their objectives, improve their performance, and remain competitive in the industry. Without the right categorization of engineering sub-organization, Oil and Gas production companies may struggle to maintain and optimize their operations, address technical challenges, and innovate to meet changing market demands and maintain high reputation.

Interest in lumbar disc arthroplasty as an alternative to fusion surgery continues to grow. The goal of disc arthroplasty is to replace the diseased disc while preserving and/or restoring motion at the operated spinal level. Different paradigms exist in the design of total disc arthroplasty devices. The purpose of this study was to compare the in vitro biomechanics of a more constrained ball-and-socket design (Prodisc-L, Synthes Spine and Maverick, Medtronic) and a less constrained mobile-bearing design (Charité, DePuy). The biomechanical performances of the disc prostheses were compared to the fused and harvested spine conditions.

As motion preservation implants begin to replace fusion devices for lumbar degenerative disc disease, preclinical mechanical testing of these devices is critical to predicting their in vivo safety and efficacy. ISO and ASTM standards committees have tried for years to develop a universal test standard for all lumbar disc implants. The eDisc, an elastomeric/titanium disc replacement, is substantially different in its mechanical performance than the Synthes ProDisc or J&J Charite disc. These discs rely on ball and socket motion about a fixed or moving center or rotation to provide motion restoration in 3 to 5 axes. In contrast, the eDisc has viscoelastic motion in 3 translation and 3 rotational directions, just as in the natural human disc.

Abstract Flexure based compliant mechanisms suited for a large range of motion can be designed by handling the challenges arising from combining low compliance in the desired directions, high support stiffness, low stresses and high unwanted natural frequencies. Current topology optimization tools typically can’t model large deflections of flexures, are too conceptual or are case specific. In this research, a new spatial topological synthesis algorithm based on building blocks is proposed to optimize the performance of an initial design. The algorithm consists of successive shape optimizations and layout syntheses. In each shape optimization the dimensions for some layout are optimized. The layout synthesis strategically replaces the most “critical” building block with a better option. To maximize the first unwanted natural frequency the replacement strategy depends the strain energy distribution of the accompanying mode shape. The algorithm is tested for the design of a 1-DOF flexure hinge. The obtained final layout agrees with results known from literature.

In this paper, a theoretical analysis and syntheses of a parametric controller for thermo-acoustic combustion instabilities in a liquid-fueled propulsion system is developed. A generalized wave equation describes the dynamic behavior of second order nonlinear oscillations. The control algorithm is developed based on the first two modes using the time-averaged simplification of the governing coupled nonlinear system equations. The closed loop control law design is based on finding an optimal phase angle such that the heat release produced by secondary oscillatory fuel injection is out of phase with the mode’s pressure oscillations, and on finding the limits on the controller gain, to ensure the system stability. Theses gains are then optimized using three different performance indices, namely, integral of the time absolute error, ITAE, integral of the absolute error, IAE, and finally, integral of square of the error, ISE. Simulations illustrate the proposed technique capability to effectively attenuate the unwanted oscillations.

We have focuses our studies on the synthesis of novel biobased monomers designed for free radical polymerization which could increase the biomass carbon content pursuing to equal or improve the performance of existing polymers from non-renewable sources. Cardanol, which is a natural phenolic oil, is issued from Cashew Nutshell Liquid (CNSL), a non-edible renewable resource, co-produced from cashew industry in large commercial volumes (1Mt p.a.). Cardanol is non-toxic and particularly suitable for the addition of aromatic renewable resources in polymers and materials. We recently reported various routes for the synthesis of di- and poly-functional building blocks derived from cardanol thereafter used in polymer syntheses. We especially synthesized a new radically polymerizable cardanol-derived monomer. Hence, we synthesized cardanol-based aromatic latex by radical aqueous emulsion (and miniemulsion) polymerization. We also synthesized UV-reactive cardanol-derived latex for styrene-free coating applications.
Vegetable oils and their fatty acids (FAs) derivatives have become the most promising alternative solution to design performant bio-based polymers. However, considering the poor reactivity of the internal unsaturation of FAs through radical process, most currently available synthesis of monomers reported in literature are limited to polycondensation. Therefore, the objective of our work was to synthesize monomers from fatty acids bearing reactive function through radical process and evaluate their resulting methacrylate polymers as viscosity modifiers in various oils such as mineral or vegetable oils.

In this work, we report a simple fabrication method for metal nanoparticles and nanorods on halloysite supports. Silver nanorods of 15 nm diameter were synthesized by thermal decomposition of silver acetate within halloysite lumen. Nanorods had crystalline nature with [111] axis oriented ∼ 68° from the halloysite tubule main axis. Linear arrays from gold, iron, cobalt and palladium nanoparticles on halloysite external surface were also synthesized by chemical and thermal reduction method. Samples were analyzed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. These in situ syntheses offer a simple method for large scale fabrication of metallic nanorods and core-shell ceramic nanocomposites, which can be used as antimicrobial additives in plastic composites, nanoelectronic and optical materials with biocompatibility and environmentally friendly. Antimicrobial thin films were prepared based on halloysite-silver nanocomposites and tested on E. Coli and S Aureus bacterial culture. Antibacterial performance of the nanocomposite material was superior to the other conventional antimicrobial additives (silver doped bioactive glasses and carbon nanotubes). Radiation protection coatings based on fabricated nanocomposite materials is under development.

Mais, à l’heure actuelle, il n’est pas possible de donner une estimation du potentiel en énergie primaire de ces sources, ni d’évaluer les capacités d’exploitation correspondantes. Les explorations doivent être poursuivies. L’hydrogène aujourd’hui disponible n’est pas une source d’énergie primaire mais un vecteur énergétique, produit à partir de ressources fossiles pour une utilisation essentiellement industrielle (raffinage du pétrole et synthèse d’ammoniac). Demain, il faudra décarboner cet hydrogène et l’utiliser plus largement pour d’autres applications industrielles (notamment pour diminuer l’empreinte carbone de la production d’acier et du ciment) et pour la mobilité lourde. Étant donné que la production de l’hydrogène doit principalement être guidée par le gain de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre, ce présent rapport vise à définir ce qu’est l’hydrogène dit décarboné, qui doit prévaloir sur tout hydrogène carboné. Il s’agira ainsi de préciser comment il est produit, de mieux identifier quels pourraient être, à l’avenir, ses usages les plus appropriés, et de recommander un niveau raisonnable de consommation d’hydrogène, notamment en prenant en compte les besoins induits en termes de production d’énergie électrique, qui seront considérables . La production d’hydrogène par électrolyse de l’eau, qui apparaît comme un élément clé en termes d’émissions de dioxyde de carbone (CO2), n’est décarbonée que si l’électricité utilisée est effectivement bas carbone (nucléaire ou renouvelable), ce qui est loin d’être le cas en Europe ou dans le monde. Pour le moment, l’électricité au niveau du mix européen est très largement carbonée et son utilisation pour alimenter les électrolyseurs conduirait à des émissions de CO2 deux fois supérieures à celles du procédé de synthèse classique à partir du méthane. Avec un mix électrique remarquablement bas carbone, la France dispose d’un atout majeur pour jouer un rôle pionnier dans le déploiement de l’hydrogène décarboné, à condition que les nouvelles capacités de production électrique nécessaires soient rapidement disponibles et elles-mêmes bas carbone. L’analyse réalisée souligne l’importance de l’enjeu de compétitivité industrielle constitué par la mise au point d’électrolyseurs disposant des meilleures performances possibles, au service d’une souveraineté énergétique nationale. L’effort dans ce domaine mérite d’être soutenu par une recherche scientifique et technologique sur l’efficacité énergétique des électrolyseurs et des piles à combustible, les questions de réduction de l’empreinte environnementale de ses éléments, l’amélioration de leur stabilité et de leur durée de vie, et, plus généralement, tous les éléments de la chaîne de valeur (réservoirs, nouveaux matériaux, matériaux et molécules de stockage et transport de l’hydrogène, etc.). Le rapport met également en évidence la nécessité de guider les choix et les développements par des analyses de cycles de vie effectuées sur l’ensemble de la chaîne de valeur. Les questions de sécurité soulevées par l’utilisation de l’hydrogène sont majeures. Il est absolument nécessaire de les traiter avec attention, et des connaissances scientifiques et technologiques nouvelles sont indispensables pour définir des applications sûres de l’hydrogène. En particulier, pour les applications envisagées en dehors des espaces industriels, il faudra s’assurer que les protocoles et les règlements restent compatibles avec leur diffusion. L’analyse des usages futurs de l’hydrogène décarboné indique que, dans un premier temps, les applications devraient être principalement faites dans : (i) le domaine industriel, en particulier pour défossiliser les procédés industriels les plus émetteurs de gaz à effet de serre (notamment la production d’acier et de ciment) et pour remplacer l’hydrogène gris dans les usages industriels actuels (synthèse de l’ammoniac et du méthanol) ; (ii) le domaine des transports lourds (maritime ou aérien), notamment en permettant la synthèse de carburants alternatifs pour remplacer les combustibles fossiles actuels.

To elucidate the role of ROS in the tri-trophic interactions in postharvest biocontrol systems a detailed molecular and biochemical investigation was undertaken. The application of the yeast biocontrol agent Metschnikowia fructicola, microarray analysis was performed on grapefruit surface wounds using an Affymetrix Citrus GeneChip. the data indicated that 1007 putative unigenes showed significant expression changes following wounding and yeast application relative to wounded controls. The expression of the genes encoding Respiratory burst oxidase (Rbo), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK), G-proteins, chitinase (CHI), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS) and 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL). In contrast, three genes, peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), were down-regulated in grapefruit peel tissue treated with yeast cells. The yeast antagonists, Metschnikowia fructicola (strain 277) and Candida oleophila (strain 182) generate relatively high levels of super oxide anion (O2−) following its interaction with wounded fruit surface. Using laser scanning confocal microscopy we observed that the application of M. fructicola and C. oleophila into citrus and apple fruit wounds correlated with an increase in H2O2 accumulation in host tissue. The present data, together with our earlier discovery of the importance of H₂O₂ production in the defense response of citrus flavedo to postharvest pathogens, indicate that the yeast-induced oxidative response in fruit exocarp may be associated with the ability of specific yeast species to serve as biocontrol agents for the management of postharvest diseases. Effect of ROS on yeast cells was also studied. Pretreatment of the yeast, Candida oleophila, with 5 mM H₂O₂ for 30 min (sublethal) increased yeast tolerance to subsequent lethal levels of oxidative stress (50 mM H₂O₂), high temperature (40 °C), and low pH (pH 4). Suppression subtractive hybridization analysis was used to identify genes expressed in yeast in response to sublethal oxidative stress. Transcript levels were confirmed using semi quantitative reverse transcription-PCR. Seven antioxidant genes were up regulated. Pretreatment of the yeast antagonist Candida oleophila with glycine betaine (GB) increases oxidative stress tolerance in the microenvironment of apple wounds. ROS production is greater when yeast antagonists used as biocontrol agents are applied in the wounds. Compared to untreated control yeast cells, GB-treated cells recovered from the oxidative stress environment of apple wounds exhibited less accumulation of ROS and lower levels of oxidative damage to cellular proteins and lipids. Additionally, GB-treated yeast exhibited greater biocontrol activity against Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea, and faster growth in wounds of apple fruits compared to untreated yeast. The expression of major antioxidant genes, including peroxisomal catalase, peroxiredoxin TSA1, and glutathione peroxidase was elevated in the yeast by GB treatment. A mild heat shock (HS) pretreatment (30 min at 40 1C) improved the tolerance of M. fructicola to subsequent high temperature (45 1C, 20–30 min) and oxidative stress (0.4 mol-¹) hydrogen peroxide, 20–60 min). HS-treated yeast cells showed less accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) than non-treated cells in response to both stresses. Additionally, HS-treated yeast exhibited significantly greater (P≥0.0001) biocontrol activity against Penicillium expansum and a significantly faster (Po0.0001) growth rate in wounds of apple fruits stored at 25 1C compared with the performance of untreated yeast cells. Transcription of a trehalose-6-phosphate synthase gene (TPS1) was up regulated in response to HS and trehalose content also increased.

Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence synthesis products in real world settings. Specific questions included: (1) Do TMTs decrease the time spent developing search strategies? (2) How do TMTs affect the sensitivity and yield of searches? (3) Do TMTs identify groups of records that can be safely excluded in the search evaluation step? (4) Does the complexity of a systematic review topic affect TMT performance? In addition to quantitative data, we collected librarians' comments on their experiences using TMTs to explore when and how these new tools may be useful in systematic review search¬¬ creation. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, we included seven SR projects, and classified them into simple or complex topics. The project librarian used conventional “usual practice” (UP) methods to create the MEDLINE search strategy, while a paired TMT librarian simultaneously and independently created a search strategy using a variety of TMTs. TMT librarians could choose one or more freely available TMTs per category from a pre-selected list in each of three categories: (1) keyword/phrase tools: AntConc, PubReMiner; (2) subject term tools: MeSH on Demand, PubReMiner, Yale MeSH Analyzer; and (3) strategy evaluation tools: Carrot2, VOSviewer. We collected results from both MEDLINE searches (with and without TMTs), coded every citation’s origin (UP or TMT respectively), deduplicated them, and then sent the citation library to the review team for screening. When the draft report was submitted, we used the final list of included citations to calculate the sensitivity, precision, and number-needed-to-read for each search (with and without TMTs). Separately, we tracked the time spent on various aspects of search creation by each librarian. Simple and complex topics were analyzed separately to provide insight into whether TMTs could be more useful for one type of topic or another. Results: Across all reviews, UP searches seemed to perform better than TMT, but because of the small sample size, none of these differences was statistically significant. UP searches were slightly more sensitive (92% [95% confidence intervals (CI) 85–99%]) than TMT searches (84.9% [95% CI 74.4–95.4%]). The mean number-needed-to-read was 83 (SD 34) for UP and 90 (SD 68) for TMT. Keyword and subject term development using TMTs generally took less time than those developed using UP alone. The average total time was 12 hours (SD 8) to create a complete search strategy by UP librarians, and 5 hours (SD 2) for the TMT librarians. TMTs neither affected search evaluation time nor improved identification of exclusion concepts (irrelevant records) that can be safely removed from the search set. Conclusion: Across all reviews but one, TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches. For simple SR topics (i.e., single indication–single drug), TMT searches were slightly less sensitive, but reduced time spent in search design. For complex SR topics (e.g., multicomponent interventions), TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches; nevertheless, in complex reviews, they identified unique eligible citations not found by the UP searches. TMT searches also reduced time spent in search strategy development. For all evidence synthesis types, TMT searches may be more efficient in reviews where comprehensiveness is not paramount, or as an adjunct to UP for evidence syntheses, because they can identify unique includable citations. If TMTs were easier to learn and use, their utility would be increased.
