Cued language switching is used to examine language-control processes by comparing performance in language-switch trials with performance in repetition trials. In 1:1 cue-to-language mappings, language repetitions involve cue repetitions and language switches involve cue switches. Hence, the observed switch costs might reflect cue-switch costs rather than language-related control processes. By introducing a 2:1 cue-to-language mapping, we dissociated language switches (cue and language switched vs. cue switched, but language repeated) and cue switches (repeated language, with vs. without switched cue). We found cue-switch costs, but language-related switch costs were substantial, too, presumably reflecting language-control processes in cued language switching.

This study aimed to compare adalimumab originator vs. biosimilar in HS patients, and to evaluate the effect of a switch to a biosimilar, or a switch back to the originator, in terms of treatment ineffectiveness. Patients with a diagnosis of HS were enrolled from 14 Italian sites. Treatment ineffectiveness was measured using Hurley score. The major analyses were 1) comparison between the two treatment groups (non-switcher analysis), and 2) the cross-over trend of Hurley score between treatment switchers (switcher analysis). Cox and Poisson regression models were used to compare the treatment ineffectiveness between groups. A total of 326 patients were divided into four groups: 171 (52.5%) taking originator; 61 (18.7%) patients taking biosimilar; 66 (20.2%) switchers; 28 (8.6%) switchers from originator to biosimilar and switched. A greater loss of efficacy was observed in the group allocated to the biosimilar than the originator group. The switcher analysis showed an effectiveness loss in the biosimilar compared to the originator. These results seem to indicate that a switch from one drug to the other may lead to a greater risk of inefficacy. A return to the previous treatment also does not ensure efficaciousness.

Introduction/Objective. The Aim of our study was to retrospectively analyze data about efficacy and persistence on different anti-TNF? treatment in spondyloarthritis (SpA). Methods. We retrospectively analyzed SpA patients whose data were entered into the Serbian national SpA registry. All patients were divided in two groups: non-switcher (patients who were treated with one anti-TNF?) and switcher group (who has switched from first to second and third anti-TNF?). Disease activity was measured by the Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Score and the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index and functional status was measured by the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index. Results. We identified 290 SpA patients-250 patients with axial SpA(axSpA) and 40 patients with peripheral SpA(pSpA). Among 250 patients with axSpA, 192(76.8%) did not change first anti-TNF?, while 58(23.2%) switched to the second and 14/250(5.6%) switched to the third anti-TNF?. Among 40 patients with pSpA, 29(72.5%) did not change first anti-TNF? while 11(27.5%) switched to the second and 3/40(7.5%) switched to the third anti-TNF?. Survival on the first anti-TNF? was 35.16?28.5 months (switchers29.41?21.89 vs non-switchers 36.89 ? 30.04). ?t the moment of this cross-section 37(19.3%) patients still had very high disease activity, while only 75(39%) patients had inactive disease. Conclusions. In real-life clinical practice in our country, as well as in others, there is reluctance to anti-TNF? switch in SpA patients. Administrative limitations and national reimbursement policy could be one of the main reasons limiting treat to target implementation in SpA patients. Additionally, specific drug efficacy on extra-articular manifestations is often the reason for choosing the first line medication or switching to the next one.

AbstractCode-switching has been found to incur a processing cost in auditory comprehension. However, listeners may have access to anticipatory phonetic cues to code-switches (Piccinini & Garellek, 2014; Fricke et al., 2016), thus mitigating switch cost. We investigated effects of withholding anticipatory phonetic cues on code-switched word recognition by splicing English-to-Mandarin code-switches into unilingual English sentences. In a concept monitoring experiment, Mandarin–English bilinguals took longer to recognize code-switches, suggesting a switch cost. In an eye tracking experiment, the average proportion of all participants' looks to pictures corresponding to sentence-medial code-switches decreased when cues were withheld. Acoustic analysis of stimuli revealed tone-specific pitch contours before English-to-Mandarin code-switches, consistent with previous work on tonal coarticulation. We conclude that withholding anticipatory phonetic cues can negatively affect code-switched recognition: therefore, bilingual listeners use phonetic cues in processing code-switches under normal conditions. We discuss the implications of tonal coarticulation for mechanisms underlying phonetic cues to code-switching.

A novel three-phase power-factor-correction (PFC) rectifier with zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) in six main switches and zero-current-switching (ZCS) in the auxiliary switch is proposed, analyzed, and experimentally verified. The main feature of the proposed auxiliary circuit is used to reduce the switching loss when the six main switches are turned on and the one auxiliary switch is turned off. In this paper, a detailed operating analysis of the proposed circuit is given. Modeling and analysis are verified by experimental results based on a three-phase 7 kW rectifier. The soft-switched PFC rectifier shows an improvement in efficiency of 2.25% compared to its hard-switched counterpart at 220 V under full load.

ObjectivesReal-world evidence on effectiveness of switching to biosimila r etanercept is scarce. In Denmark, a nationwide guideline of mandatory switch from 50 mg originator (ETA) to biosimilar (SB4) etanercept was issued for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) in 2016. Clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes were studied in ETA-treated patients, who switched to SB4 (switchers) or maintained ETA (non-switchers). Retention rates were compared with that of a historic cohort of ETA-treated patients. Switchers who resumed ETA treatment (back-switchers) were characterised.MethodsObservational cohort study based on the DANBIO registry. Treatment retention was explored by Kaplan-Meier plots and Cox regression (crude, adjusted).Results1621 (79%) of 2061 ETA-treated patients switched to SB4. Disease activity was unchanged 3 months’ preswitch/postswitch. Non-switchers often received 25 mg ETA (ETA 25 mg pens/syringes and powder solution were still available). One-year adjusted retention rates were: non-switchers: 77% (95% CI: 72% to 82%)/switchers: 83% (79% to 87%)/historic cohort: 90% (88% to 92%). Patients not in remission had lower retention rates than patients in remission, both in switchers (crude HR 1.7 (1.3 to 2.2)) and non-switchers (2.4 (1.7 to 3.6)). During follow-up, 120 patients (7% of switchers) back-switched to ETA. Back-switchers’ clinical characteristics were similar to switchers, and reasons for SB4 withdrawal were mainly subjective.ConclusionSeventy-nine per cent of patients switched from ETA to SB4. After 1 year, adjusted treatment retention rates were lower in switchers versus the historic ETA cohort, but higher than in non-switchers. Withdrawal was more common in patients not in remission. The results suggest that switch outcomes in routine care are affected by patient-related factors and non-specific drug effects.

For the delay may degrade the performance of networked control systems, networked control systems based on 100 M switched Ethernet are proposed in this paper. According to the working principle of Ethernet switch, the formulas of the upper bound delay of the single-level switched Ethernet and the multiple-level switched Ethernet are deduced by the timing diagram method, and the values of the upper bound delay are also given. The key factors that influence the upper bound delay of switched Ethernet are analyzed; then, the characteristics of the upper bound delay are presented, which show that the delay induced by the single-level 100 M switched Ethernet has little effect on the performance of control systems, while the delay induced by the multiple-level 100 M switched Ethernet may meet the time requirements of all classes of control systems if the numbers of levels and the numbers of nodes connecting to switches are set properly. Finally, the performance of networked control systems is simulated by TrueTime, and the results further show the feasibility and superiority of 100 M switched Ethernet based networked control systems without modification of the network protocols.

Abstract This paper presents the results of experimental research of a resonant switched capacitor voltage multiplier in a cost-effective topology (CESCVM) with a limited number of active switches. In the charging mode of the switched capacitors, the converter utilizes only one active switch and a required number of diodes. Therefore, the cost of the converter is decreased as compared with that of a classical SCVM converter, owing to a lower number of switches and gate driver circuits, as well as a smaller PCB area. Moreover, the CESCVM has simpler control circuits and higher reliability. This paper presents the original experimental results of the operation of the CESCVM converter. A concept of the bootstrap supply of gate drivers of the flying switches is also examined.

We use precinct-level data to examine two questions: how an incumbent’s “reelection constituency” changes following a party switch and whether incumbents who switch parties do worse than non-switchers. Our data come from four members of the U.S. House who switched parties between 1995 and 2004. Among this group, one switched parties prior to the enactment of a controversial redistricting plan, and thus we can assess how boundary changes mitigate the negative impact of party switching. We also compare each party switcher’s vote following the switch with that of non-switching incumbents running for reelection that year.

This thesis is concerned with the design and analysis of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) and its improved structure Double Stator Switched Reluctance Motor (DSSRM). Three configurations of SRM viz. Inner Stator, Outer stator and Double Stator are designed and simulated in ANSYS Maxwell Suite. Design parameters are chosen by aiming optimum performance of motor after literature review and analytical study of the motor. SRM is not a line start machine, so power converter circuit is required to excite the motor. Without proper switching of current, desired torque is not obtained in SRM. The converter circuit and switching unit is built in Maxwell Circuit Editor Tools. Both magnetostatics and transient analysis is performed to investigate motion torque, torque ripple, normal force and radial force. A good comprehensive comparison of three different types of SRMs based on their torque profile and force densities is presented. Simulation performed verified better performance of DSSRM.

Switched Ethernet is an Ethernet LAN that uses switches to connect individual nodes.

This is popular because of its effective and convenient way of extending the bandwidth of

existing Ethernets. Switched Ethernet is being considered by the industry community because

of its open standardization, cost effectiveness, and the support for higher data rates up to

10Gbps. Even though many special-purposed solutions were proposed to support time

constrained communication over Switched Ethernet, still there were some doubts about the

real time handling capability of Switched Ethernet. To achieve reliable transmission

guarantees for real time traffic over Switched Ethernet, it is important to measure the

performance of Switched Ethernet networks for real time communication. In this thesis work

we have observed the average end-to-end packet delay for real time traffic over a Switched

Ethernet by simulation, which is very much essential for real time communication in

industrial applications, where the communication is time-deterministic. In our thesis we used

FCFS priority queuing in both the source nodes and switch. In this thesis we also discussed

about the feasibility analysis for fixed sized frames and some traffic handling methods. We

used 100mbp/s single full duplex Ethernet switch for our simulation. Finally simulation

analysis and simulation results are discussed. Our purpose of simulation of Switched Ethernet

networks is of good importance for the real time industrial applications.

The thesis begins with a general introduction to switched-mode power conversion. The main application areas of the technique are outlined and a summary is presented of current research work. The following chapters then focus on one recent development in the field, the Cuk converter and integrated magnetics. First, the steady-state performance limitations of the Cuk converter are explored through a comparison with the basic switched-mode converter topologies. The circuit is seen to possess several attractive properties including input and output current waveforms which are continuous rather than pulsating. However, the switching losses are shown to be high. A regenerative snubber is presented which reduces the transistor turn-off loss whilst preserving the high-quality input and output current waveforms of the converter. The integrated magnetics technique is discussed in the following chapter. This is the technique whereby converter magnetic components are coupled to eliminate input and output ripple currents and therefore improve steady-state performance. The possible problems are highlighted of attempting to couple transformers and inductors on a single core and an alternative coupling technique is outlined which uses an auxiliary electric circuit. The introduction of magnetic coupling in the Cuk converter to eliminate input and output ripple currents and improve steady-state performance results in more complicated dynamic characteristics and a more complex control problem. The state-space averaging technique is used in chapter 4 with the aid of a control engineering design package, CLADP, to analyse the problem. The impact of component coupling on the converter dynamic characteristics is explained and possible control strategies are suggested and verified. Finally, the Cuk converter with component coupling is assessed as a large-signal waveshaper. Several inverter configurations are examined in which a switched-mode converter operating under closed-loop control is used as a waveshaper to synthesise high-quality sinusoidal output currents. The implementation of the schemes using a Cuk converter with component coupling is described.

In a networked FTI system, the switch is a key component that allows data to be routed between Data Acquisition Units (DAU's), networked recorders, data processing and analysis stations. This paper provides an introduction to network switching concepts with a focus on its operation in a networked FTI system. The features of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and FTI switches are compared demonstrating the benefits of FTI switches in terms of reliability, routing, throughput, latency, and start-up delays.

The success of the client/server paradigm for modern networked telemetry systems continues to stress the LAN that carries data generated from the acquisition front ends to the display workstations and the file servers on the LAN. As the number of LAN-attached devices such as Loral's System 500 Model 550 (Loral 550) telemetry front end, workstations, and file servers grows beyond two, the Ethernet LAN collision rates increase and the throughput slows down. At what point the network performance declines is a function of the specific application bandwidth demands required. This paper describes a new method for boosting LAN performance by providing Ethernet switching and protocol filtering. The performance of the LAN is critical to the performance of the complete telemetry enterprise architecture.

In this thesis we study systems with switching dynamics and we propose new mathematical tools to analyse them. We show that the postulation of a global state space structure in current frameworks is restrictive and lead to potential difficulties that limit its use for the analysis of new emerging applications. In order to overcome such shortcomings, we reformulate the foundations in the study of switched systems by developing a trajectory-based approach, where we allow the use of models that are most suitable for the analysis of a each system. These models can involve sets of higher-order differential equations whose state space does not necessarily coincide. Based on this new approach, we first study closed switched systems, and we provide sufficient conditions for stability based on LMIs using the concept of multiple higher order Lyapunov function. We also study the role of positive-realness in stability of bimodal systems and we introduce the concept of positive-real completion. Furthermore, we study open switched systems by developing a dissipativity theory. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for dissipativity in terms of LMIs constructed from the coefficient matrices of the differential equations describing the modes. The relationship between dissipativity and stability is also discussed. Finally, we study the dynamics of energy distribution networks. We develop parsimonious models that deal effectively with the variant complexity of the network and the inherent switching phenomena induced by power converters. We also present the solution to instability problems caused by devices with negative impedance characteristics such as constant power loads, using tools developed in our framework.

Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA’s) are a key technology for the design of all optical communication systems and networks. The superiority of EDFAs lies in their negligible intermodulation distortion across high speed multichannel signals, low intrinsic losses, slow gain dynamics, and gain in a wide range of optical wavelengths. Due to long lifetime in excited states, EDFAs do not oppose the effect of cross-gain saturation. The time characteristics of the gain saturation and recovery effects are between a few hundred microseconds and 10 milliseconds. However, in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical networks with EDFAs, the number of channels traversing an EDFA can change due to the faulty link of the network or the system reconfiguration. It has been found that, due to the variation in channel number in the EDFAs chain, the output system powers of surviving channels can change in a very short time. Thus, the power transient is one of the problems deteriorating system performance. In this thesis, the transient phenomenon in wavelength routed WDM optical networks with EDFA chains was investigated. The task was performed using different input signal powers for circuit switched networks. A simulator for the EDFA gain dynamicmodel was developed to compute the magnitude and speed of the power transients in the non-self-saturated EDFA both single and chained. The dynamic model of the self-saturated EDFAs chain and its simulator were also developed to compute the magnitude and speed of the power transients and the Optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). We found that the OSNR transient magnitude and speed are a function of both the output power transient and the number of EDFAs in the chain. The OSNR value predicts the level of the quality of service in the related network. It was found that the power transients for both self-saturated and non-self-saturated EDFAs are close in magnitude in the case of gain saturated EDFAs networks. Moreover, the cross-gain saturation also degrades the performance of the packet switching networks due to varying traffic characteristics. The magnitude and the speed of output power transients increase along the EDFAs chain. An investigation was done on the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) or the WDM Internet protocol (WDM-IP) traffic networks using different traffic patterns based on the Pareto and Poisson distribution. The simulator is used to examine the amount and speed of the power transients in Pareto and Poisson distributed traffic at different bit rates, with specific focus on 2.5 Gb/s. It was found from numerical and statistical analysis that the power swing increases if the time interval of theburst-ON/burst-OFF is long in the packet bursts. This is because the gain dynamics is fast during strong signal pulse or with long duration pulses, which is due to the stimulatedemission avalanche depletion of the excited ions. Thus, an increase in output power levelcould lead to error burst which affects the system performance.

This thesis investigates the ability of Switched Active Switched Parasitic antenna (SASPA) as direction finding arrays. SASPA array consists of N identical antennas in which one element is in active state while the others are parasites during one point of measurement time. The improvements in direction of arrival estimation achieved by using SASPA arrays were examined under different scenarios of the data model. Several estimations were conducted to depict the outperformance of SASPA arrays over all-active antenna arrays.

Abstract Piezoelectric-based vibration reduction has the potential to improve the lifetime and structural integrity of turbomachinery blades by reducing the risk of high-cycle fatigue. Semi-active techniques produce small, self-powered implementations that can meet the strict design requirements for rotating machinery. Most semi-active techniques switch piezoelectric transducers between an open circuit and a shunt circuit in a way that reduces vibration. However, these switches produce a small impulse on the structure due to the electromechanical coupling of the piezoelectric material. Since multiple-mode vibration reduction typically requires distributed sections of piezoelectric material, the switching impulse generated by one transducer may affect others. This study investigates the effect of the switching impulse on the non-switched piezoelectric transducers. Experimental testing shows the switching impulse induces a voltage response at the natural frequencies of the structure, with the strongest responses occurring at modes where both the switched and non-switched piezoelectric transducers have high electromechanical coupling. Furthermore, piezoelectric sections that lack coupling at the excitation frequency of the structure exhibit a more noticeable response to the switching impulse. This response enables remote sensing of switches, which may facilitate wireless coordinated switch timing.

RF MEMS switches have many advantages over solid-state switches but their main disadvantage is poor reliability. The reliability problem stems from the impact forces generated at the time of closing of the switch and subsequent bouncing. This paper proposes a feedback control strategy to rapidly close the switch without bouncing. The stiffness of the system is switched between a positive value and a negative value to achieve small rise and setting times with no overshoot. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy.

DC-DC power converters are necessary to step-up the voltage or current with high conversion ratio for many applications e.g. photovoltaic and fuel cell energy conversion, uninterruptible power supply, DC microgrid, automobile, high intensity discharged lamp ballast, hybrid vehicle, etc. in order to use low voltage sources. In this project, a modified SIBC (mSIBC) is proposed with reduced voltage stress across active switches. The proposed mSIBC configuration is transformerless and simply derived by replacing one diode of the classical switched inductor structure with an active switch. As a result, mSIBC required low voltage rating active switches, as the total output voltage is shared between two active switches. Moreover, the proposed mSIBC is low in cost, provides higher efficiency and required the same number of components compared to the classical SIBC. The experimental results are presented which validated the theoretical analysis and functionality, and the efficiency of the designed converter is 97.17%. The proposed mSIBC converter provides higher voltage conversion ratio compared to classical converters e.g. boost, buck-boost, cuk, and SEPIC. The newly designed configurations will aid the intermediate power stage between the renewable sources and utility grid or high voltage DC or AC load. Since, the total output voltage is distributed among the two active switches, low voltage rating switches can be employed to design the power circuit of the proposed converter. The classical boost converter or recently proposed switched inductor based boost converter can be replaced by the proposed mSIBC converter in real-time applications such as DC microgrid, DC-DC charger, battery backup system, UPS, EV, an electric utility grid. The proposed power circuitry is cost effective, compact in size, easily diagnostic, highly efficient and reliable.

A technique to suppress vibration using piezoelectric elements connected to a shunt circuit is called piezoelectric shunt damping. Many studies on this subject have been reported. Among them a technique called switched shunt damping exists. In switched shunt damping developed so far, a switch is placed in the shunt circuit in series to the piezoelectric element, and is used to switch the shunt circuit from an open circuit to a closed circuit. Depending on the elements used in the shunt circuit, various types of switched shunt damping exist. This paper presents a new approach for switched shunt damping on inductance. The presented shunt circuit is composed of a resistance, an inductance and a switch connected in parallel with the inductance. Thus, when the switch is open the shunt circuit becomes an LR circuit, and when the switch is closed it becomes a resistive circuit. Furthermore, switching is operated based on the charge on the piezoelectric element, so that no sensors to conduct the switching are needed. To check the performance of vibration suppression by the proposed method, numerical simulations and experiments are conducted. The results show that the presented switched shunt damping have high performance of vibration suppression.

Optical 2 × 2 exchange switches can be utilized as routing elements for optical computing and fiber optic based networking systems. Here we demonstrate a 2 × 2, polarization independent ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) optical exchange switch, which can be used for these applications. Based on the nematic liquid crystal switch of Wagner and Cheng,1 it operates by separating the input beam into two orthogonal polarizations with a polarizing beam splitter. The beams are then directed through a surface stabilized, parallely aligned FLC cell. By applying ±15 V across the cell the optical polarization is either switched or left unaltered. Using a further polarizing beam splitter, the beams are recombined to produce a single unpolarized beam; its direction is determined by whether the FLC was switched or not. Due to its symmetry, this device can operate as a 2 × 2 exchange switch. Preliminary measurements indicate switching speeds of <30 µs at ±15 V with <−16-dB crosstalk primarily as a result of the beam splitter performance. Device component specifications suggest an operational bandwidth of 30 nm either side of the designed wavelength. Better results are expected with faster FLC cells and improved beam splitters. Other novel total internally reflecting FLC switch designs are being investigated that are polarization independent and have extinction ratios similar to the device of Meadows et al.2

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) radio frequency (RF) switches hold great promise in a myriad of commercial, aerospace, and military applications. MEMS switches offer important advantages over current electromechanical and solid state technologies including high linearity, low insertion loss, low power consumption, good isolation, and low cost [1–21]. However, there is little fundamental understanding of the factors determining the performance and reliability of these devices. Our previous work investigated fundamentals of hot-switched direct current (DC) gold (Au) contacts using a modified microadhesion apparatus as a switch simulator [1]. Those experiments were conducted under precisely controlled operating conditions in air at MEMS-scale forces with an emphasis on the role of surface forces and electric current on switch performance, reliability, and durability [1]. Electric current had a profound effect on deformation mechanisms, adhesion, contact resistance (R), and reliability/durability. At low current (1–10 μA), asperity creep and switching induced adhesion were the most important observations, whereas, at high current (1–10 mA), lack of adhesion and switch shorting by nanowire formation were prominent [1].

Multistage networks, such as the Omega/shuffle-exchange network, Clos/Benes network, etc., are widely used in telecommunications and parallel signal processing today. An optical implementation of these networks is desirable because of its high data rates, low crosstalk, and the feasibility of 2-D structures in optics. Shuffling interconnections and bypass/exchange switches are two basic building blocks in a multi stage network. The free-space optical perfect shuffle, 2-D folded perfect shuffle, and 2-D separable shuffle have been described.1-4 Stirk and Athale proposed an optical implementation for bypass/exchange switch based on latching logic5. We present several optoelectronic designs for single and multistage 2×2 bypass/exchange switch modules. One design is for a general 2×2 single stage circuit switched module which can perform bypass, exchange, and broadcasting functions. In this module, control and power are supplied at wavelength λ2, while data are passed at wavelength λ1. A second design is for a bypass/exchange switch in which both data and control are carried at λ1, while power is supplied at λ2. This design can operate in both packet or circuit switched mode. Finally, we discuss modules for use in multistage networks. In this application, signal routing information can be inserted from a controller at each stage, or the data can be self-routed by headers attached to each data packet. We also present a multistage bypass/exchange 2×2 switch capable of central control or self-routing.
