Streszczenie:
It is argued that sustainability today has become a mega-trend, where the consumers are more aware of their surroundings and businesses impact on the environment than ever. Companies have come to be critically observed by societies, which has put more pressure on them to act in more sustainable ways as well as becoming more transparent with their operational and sustainability communication towards stakeholders. In 1978 China opened up the country to the global economy and since then, the country has rapidly risen in the terms of international economic importance. However, China is suffering from large environmental concerns like immoderate pollution that has become a daily concern for the population. Due to the rapid economic growth that China has been going through the recent years, these environmental issues the country is facing are largely tied to the industrialization. One of the biggest factors contributing to China’s heavy pollution is the colossal number of both Western and Chinese production facilities opening up in China. The aim with this research was to investigate how three selected Swedish companies placed in Shanghai approach sustainability marketing and explore how they embed sustainability within their strategy and particularly in their marketing mix. This thesis was conducted with a qualitative approach and with semi-structured interviews with three Swedish companies; Greencarrier, Atlas Copco and Stora Enso. The findings from the interviews, conducted with the three mentioned companies, pointed out that sustainability today is well integrated in the company’s core business and that working with sustainability has become a critical success factor. Factors that were important for the companies was to have long-term sustainability strategies, being innovative and transparent in their operational and sustainability communication, being material efficient in the product development and promoting this on media channels like WeChat, internet websites, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Also, more traditional ways of marketing themselves was important, like visiting universities and exhibit at fairs. This essay will provide knowledge that can help companies to further their understanding of what a big role marketing has and how they can support awareness of sustainability issues. We also hope that our essay can help to inform consumers on the issue and by that place higher demands on companies to act sustainable. Because our thesis focused on investigating Swedish companies in Shanghai, it would be interesting to continue further research on how Chinese companies approach sustainability marketing.

The major themes of the research are how well sustainability reporting reflects sustainability performance and 13 companies were assessed over three years on their sustainability reporting as reflected in their sustainability reports as well as 10 in-depth interviews. For both positive and negative reasons the reports are not always a fare reflection of sustainability performance and those companies well-endowed with accolades in sustainability reporting are not necessarily leaders in performance.

Streszczenie:
The main aim of this thesis is investigating energy sustainability in developing countries using useful indicators. As it is known, serious issues such as global warming and inefficient consumption of energy will lead to severe problems in the future in the world and in particular in developing countries. Those countries which have a proper policy and practical actions by policymakers and energy experts can prevent these problems confidently. For these reasons, the present thesis has focused on developing indicators that can measure the grade of energy sustainability in order to achieve energy sustainability the countries analyzed. In this sense, the thesis starts to investigate the Sustainable Energy Development Index (SEDI) method and improves this method by finding and evaluating the useful indicators to improve and complete the SEDI methodology. In this regard, a numerical analysis of 12 countries has been realized. Following the methodology, new indicators associated with energy are proposed in line with the Habitat III and the SDGs from the UN. Additionally, appropriate strategies to combine the different UN goals are analyzed, and indicators are chosen to provide the best performance of the index. For this research, it is needed to analyze many related data and find novel indicators based on these data that can be obtained and applied by policymakers and energy experts for application in developing countries due to high percentage of energy consumption sector in these communities. Therefore, the main findings of this thesis are proposed indicators for improving the quality life of the inhabitants of different areas in the world with respect with the different aspects of the energy such as access energy, affordable energy and saving energy. For achieving to these goals, is the need to a correct policy, the evaluation of energy sustainability based on energy systems of a country, the close collaboration of policymakers with energy experts, using useful indicators, the balance of the energy supply, equity in access to energy and environmental sustainability of the urban and remote areas. These actions will lead to achieving energy sustainability confidently.

The concept of sustainability has become apparent in the fast fashion business. In recent years many companies have started to label the more sustainable garments in order to make it easier for the consumer to make conscious decisions while shopping. However, this raises many questions due to unclear use of sustainability terms and the contradiction between environmental and ethical aspects in regards to the fashion industry. The purpose of the thesis is to raise a discussion concerning the use of sustainability labels within fast fashion. In order to reach the purpose, the following questions were developed: “What do different sustainability labels mean according to the fast fashion business?”, “What knowledge do the customers have about different sustainability labels?” and “Do the labels have an impact in the buying decision making process?”We have done an explorative study to investigate a phenomenon and highlight a potential problem in this field of studies. Since the aim of the empirical research is to gain insight of the consumers' attitudes and knowledge, the study is to a large extent qualitative. We conducted a survey in which purposive sampling was used as we wanted the respondents to fulfil certain criteria. In addition to the survey, we also conducted research on a number of fast fashion companies to get an idea of what information the customers would be naturally exposed to. The results from the study show that sustainability labels within fast fashion have not experienced their intended success among their largest consumer group. It has not yet reached desired effects on the consumption behaviour, the interest for sustainability nor the knowledge among the young female respondents. One can therefore discuss the utility of using labels within fast fashion.

The building sector was in 2018 responsible almost 40% of Sweden’s domestic greenhouse gas emissions. These numbers demands a lot from our profession and has made the topic of sustainability essential. In the Brundtland Reports definition of sustainability it’s called for  ”Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Within these words, sustainability could be defined as that what lasts.
The project Spatial Sustainability aims to explore the architecture that lasts, based on the conclusion that this demands balance between the contradicting terms adaptability and stability.
I believe that the architecture that’s both adaptable and stable should be, re-usable and capable of being re-organised, but it should also have a strong physical presence in it’s urban situation. In the intersection of this contradiction I hope to find one path leading to long-lasting architecture.

As sustainability challenges increase in both frequency and magnitude, there is a growing need for leaders who can deal with such complexity. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) develops knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable the development of such leaders. This thesis focuses on the elusive “attitude” piece, more widely referred to as the affective domain. The research team interviewed experts on affective learning in either higher education or ESD contexts. Additionally, staff members from the case study organisation, Teach for Austria (TFA) were interviewed to determine how affective learning can be further developed within their fellow program. The five-level model (5LM) was employed to frame the findings of each interview set to provide recommendations for TFA. A feature of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, the 5LM provides a strategic planning approach that allows for easier adaptation and implementation of the findings for other programs that wish to learn from this research. Therefore, this thesis serves to provide recommendations for developing affective learning in sustainability leadership programs. Making affective learning explicit and empowering one to reflect their own affective domain and their perspective on the world can have a positive impact on their life, as well as on their environment.

Living sustainability is a set of behaviors for the long-term functioning of society. Sustainability VALS provides the clothing and textiles industry distinctive insight into comprehending the phenomenon through the application of the appropriate theoretical platform. The objectives are to identify the dimensionality of sustainability value, sustainability practices and sustainability stewardship in consumers’ perceptive, and to examine the impacts of sustainability value and stewardship on sustainability practices. Analyzing data (n = 239) from a southwestern university reveals the critical dimensions of sustainability lifestyle practices, sustainability value and sustainability stewardship. 62 out of 64 hypotheses were confirmed the significant impacts of sustainability values and stewardship on sustainability lifestyle practices. The findings revealed that the altruistic, openness to change, anthropocentrism, and ecocentrism values are influential sustainability values affecting on sustainability lifestyle practices. Given the theoretical perspective of sustainability VALS, sustainability stewardships can facilitate the holistic idea to incur consumer’s sustainability lifestyle practices.

Sustainable development and in particular sustainable urban development are now catchphrases for how most cities wish to develop. Sustainability indicators have been established as a tool to facilitate decision-making measures to simplify, clarify and gather information. The idea is that indicators should control and follow through sustainability efforts but also serve as a tool to communicate ideas, thoughts and values. The aim of this study is to describe how sustainability indicators can help to streamline sustainability efforts. By looking at how three Swedish municipality use indicators along with research in the theoretical field a conclusion that shows that there are major weaknesses in the systems applied today is presented. The research advocates a few indicators based on both qualitative and quantitative values where communication is central which completely goes against what the municipalities are doing at the moment. New indicator systems based on participation where the intended audience is primary would lead to a broader understanding of sustainability goals, which is a requisite for achieving them. Indicators could facilitate decision-making where the role of management and monitoring will be key along with communication towards sustainability. As a citizen it is difficult to influence or understand sustainability projects when they are not presented in an understandable way and when it is difficult to monitor development. In the end of the study a preliminary project on how an internal process in developing a new indicator system is presented.

Streszczenie:
In this thesis, I propose that sustainability is a new emergent cultural phenomenon – a new “dreaming” - arising from our conscious and unconscious actions, our relationships and our connection to place. Such a culture of sustainability is essential to support the vision of a sustainable global society. I further propose that the way sustainability is practised, both personally and professionally, has significant potential for fostering the emergence of sustainability culture, and that a mature sustainability culture, in turn, will support our myriad actions towards sustainability. The above propositions have a significant caveat: emergence, as understood in complexity theory, is not predictable. The current unsustainable paradigm of global development is also an emergent phenomenon. Real sustainability is therefore not inevitable, simply because a vision has been articulated, and strategies and actions implemented. I also contend that as sustainability is holistic in conception, it requires a holistic approach to practice, in addition to the mechanistic prescriptions common to much contemporary sustainability practice. To move towards a holistic approach to practice requires a different type of practitioner from the conventional practitioner: more generalist than specialist, drawing on their “inner sustainability culture” when faced with complex sustainability problems, capable of working across scales, open to discovery of new patterns, and mindful of the degree of complexity in any practice setting. In recognition of the need for a new cultural paradigm of sustainability, and drawing on the concept of emergence as described by complexity theory, I have designed this research project to investigate the following four themes: 1. Culture as an emergent quality of complex adaptive socio-technical systems; 2. The connections between human action and emergent system qualities; 3. The prospects for the emergence of a culture of sustainability; and 4. The implications of emergent sustainability culture for the sustainability practitioner. In this thesis, I argue that we need a model of sustainability culture that accommodates the emergence phenomenon and new ways of emergence-based sustainability practice. I therefore propose an Emergence Model of Sustainability Culture to illustrate the relationship between sustainability, culture and the emergence phenomenon, and I articulate four Emergence Patterns for Sustainability Practice as a working framework for emergence-oriented sustainability practice across different generic practice settings in simple, complicated, complex and chaotic space. I hope that sustainability practitioners will find my Emergence Model and Emergence Patterns to be helpful in progressing to a more considered and deeper approach to sustainability practice than contemporary approaches, especially where sustainability problems are complex and difficult. In this way we may continue to develop a culture of sustainability as a new “dreaming” and the practice of sustainability will progress further to service humanity’s compelling need.

“Start with Sustainability” articulates the need to design products sustainably and provides designers with tools that enable them to do so. My thesis argues that a sustainable design practice is achieved by asking critical questions that anticipate social and environmental implications of our design decisions and enable discussion about it. My thesis also argues that by asking these questions early in the design process—at the problem-framing phase, enables them to largely impact the decisions going forward. The “Start with Sustainability” framework combines two models for—the Triple Bottom Line and the Life Cycle Analysis. The framework juxtaposes them to reveal more comprehensive concerns about the social, environmental and economic attributes of product life cycles. The solution then provides a set of critical questions at the intersections of these models, enabling the designer to better recognize the interdependencies between their design and other complex problems. These questions are asked in the form of a deck of cards that also include resources to aid designers to discuss and address these problems. In response to user testing, “Start with Sustainability” also includes a website for further participation and additional resources. The website would serve as a participatory way to build a repository of resources that can be customized towards the needs of different disciplines within product design.

The purpose of this study was to explore users' and preparers' perception of sustainability reporting, especially for accountants and financial analysts who are involved with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and GRI based sustainability or CSR reports in the United States. With the increasing trends to sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR), it is important to understand what level users and preparers currently hold towards the sustainability reporting. This study used samples from the following resources: all companies included in the GRI report list as a report preparer group and financial analysts as report users, whose companies' core business focused on social and environmental investing. This study examined four hypotheses concerning general corporate sustainability & reporting and sustainability performance indicators in environmental, economic and social aspects suggested by the GRI Guidelines. This paper contributes to corporate social responsibility and sustainability reporting. This paper studied users' perception of sustainability reporting and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Prior research mainly focused on preparers' perception or attitudes toward sustainability reports (Guthrie & Parker, 1990; Kolk, 2004; Lindgreen et al., 2009; White, 2005). Also, this paper adds to the literature on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and its guidelines that have not been extensively studied in prior research. The results revealed that users and preparers agreed on the important issues asked for the general corporate sustainability and reporting, and both groups held similar attitudes towards the environmental, economic and social performance indicators and felt most of them as important to be included in a sustainability report. In addition, both groups indicated the GRI as the preferred standard setting body for sustainability reporting and gave support to GRI for its effort to establish and promote the standards for sustainability reporting. Finally, a considerable number of users and preparers agreed that the GRI report can fairly measure a company's environmental, economic and social performance.

Streszczenie:
Global civilisation, and therefore population health, is threatened by excessive inequality, weapons of mass destruction, inadequate economic and political theory and adverse global environmental change. The unequal distribution of global foreign exchange adjusted income is both a cause and a reflection of global social characteristics responsible for many aspects of these inter-related crises. ¶ The global distribution of foreign exchange adjusted income for the period 1964-1999 is examined. Using data for more than 99% of the global population, a substantial divergence in its distribution is found. The global Gini co-efficient, adjusted for national income inequality, increased from an already high value of 71% in 1964 to peak at more than 80% in 1995, before falling, very slightly, to 79% in 1999. The global distribution of purchasing parity power income is also examined, for a similar period. Though also found to be extremely unequal, its trend has not been to increased inequality. Implications of the differences between these two trends are discussed. ¶ A weighted time series index of global environmental change (IGEC) for the period 1960-1997 was also calculated. This uses nine categories of global time series environmental data, each scaled so that 100% represents the level of each category in nature prior to anthropogenic change; zero represents decline to a critical point. This index fell from 82% in 1960 to 55% in 1997, and will further decline during this century. ¶ Using evidence from several disciplines, it is argued that the decline in the IGEC correlates with major macro-environmental changes, which, combined with flawed social responses to scarcity and its perception, place at risk the ability of civilisation to function. This could occur because of the interaction of conflict, economically disastrous extreme climatic events, deterioration of other ecosystem services, regional food and water insecurity, and currently unforeseen events. Uncertainty regarding both a safe rate of decline and the tolerable nadir of the IGEC is substantial. ¶ Substantial reduction in the inequality of foreign exchange adjusted income is vital to enhance the development of policies able to reverse the decline in the environmental goods which underpin civilisation, and to promote the co-operation needed to maximise the chance that civilisation will survive.

Prelude A short piece to prepare the way (Sadie and Tyrrell, 2001) Education for sustainability and educational leadership are the two faces to my research. Although there are differences between the concepts of environmental education and education for sustainability they are often confused. Environmental education deals with awareness raising and encouraging behaviour change to support environmental management and conservation. On the other hand, education for sustainability recognises the transformative role of education, while implicitly referring to intergenerational equity, ecological sustainability and the fair distribution of resources. The confusion is evident at the school level. Leadership is also a term fraught with confusion and misinterpretation. While there are many definitions of leadership, two common perspectives which have persisted over time are definitions of leadership as a matter of influence and of leadership as a skill. In educational terms sustainable leadership represents a shift to capture and merge contemporary leadership theory with the international pressure for sustainability through education. There is a dearth of information available to describe education for sustainability despite recognition by both Australian and Western Australian governments of its importance in this, the early years of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). The aims of this qualitative research are to capture leaders’ understanding of how education for sustainability is conceptualised, incorporated across the curriculum and led in Western Australian government secondary schools. In addition this study seeks to determine how education for sustainability becomes embedded and sustained in these schools. The research re-conceptualises leading for sustainability. Four key concepts are identified as essential for embedding education for sustainability into Western Australian government secondary schools. These key concepts are: understanding sustainability; imagining the future; building relationships; and taking action. Combined, they enhance the meagre knowledge base about leading for sustainability in Western Australian secondary schools and provide a springboard for further research in the fields of sustainability and educational leadership.

ICT for Sustainability is a growing research area looking at the potential of information and communication technologies for contributing to sustainability. The existing work in this area can be grouped in four main categories: The optimization of existing systems using ICT, the dematerialization of cultural assets and presence, the use of technology for behavioral change, and the support of sustainability practice and research. Within this research area, this thesis focuses on exploring how new technologies and approaches of working with data, such as APIs, mashups, crowdsourcing, open data, and dynamic visualizations, can be applied to sustainability and sustainability practice. This thesis follows a research through design method, where applications, prototypes, and events were created and released following an iterative design process. Five different design artifacts or “hacks” are presented and analyzed together as a portfolio. This collection of artifacts is a practical exploration of the research questions and it embodies the results. Based on the created artifacts, this text argues that the new technologies and paradigms coming from ICT can transform how sustainability work is performed, by changing the way that sustainability data is created, shared and visualized. This new “data-driven” approach is characterized by a bottom-up way of data gathering, automatic data collection and crowdsourcing, a real time orientation, a focus on transparency and openness, dynamic and interactive visualizations, and new approaches to innovation. These characteristics create new opportunities for making sustainability practice more effective and broaden its impact, but they also create new problems and increase existing risks. Finally it is argued that while information and communication technologies are usually treated as tools, these innovations in ICT for Sustainability are not only technological, but also cultural. The hacker ethic values connected with computer technologies, such as an open way of sharing knowledge, the focus on creativity as a driving force, and a hands-on approach, are key for understanding this research area and an important part of the contribution from ICT to sustainability.

Current standard practice in architecture does not take into account the external societal costs that a building creates. To understand the total consequences of a building, one must consider all of the ecological and human health factors involved for a specific project and site. The aim of sustainable architecture is to construct a well-designed building and site environment that is healthy for the occupants, has minimal undesirable impact upon the environment, is effective in the use of natural resources, and is economical and durable. Although tangible impacts are visible only after construction begins, decisions made on the drawing board have long-term environmental consequences. The objective of this thesis is to present the information and tools available to the architect to create a sustainable project. With these tools, the architect can meet the challenges of sustainable design with an informed decision making process. This thesis defines sustainability as it applies to architecture, compares environmental performance rating systems and guidelines, discusses simulation, design, and life cycle analysis tools, outlines specific green building strategies, devises a methodology for prioritization, and summarizes design and construction procedures that incorporate these green concepts into the building process. The thesis finishes with a complete project plan that, when incorporated, will promote the realization of sustainable buildings.

Abstract : Based on cosmologies and constellations within Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) interfaced with appraisal framework within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this research aims at analyzing sustainability knowledge management by Kraft Foods Company in their Annual Sustainability Report based on the meanings that their constellations convey. As conceptualized by Maton (in press) constellations refer to clusters of stances condensing social actors? practices, ideas and beliefs related to a given field of science. These clusters are the mechanism through which cosmologies are built. Through the lens of SFL, the hierarchy Individuation, situated in between the hierarchies of Instantiation and Realization, provides an open space for the activation of the LCT model, since in individuation, as Martin (2007, 2009) postulates, the central focus is on the language users rather than the language use. As regards the methodological framework, because of its interdisciplinary perspective, this research is split into two different stages: 1) the handling of the internal relations; 2) the handling of the external relations. These relations make up the overall procedures that enable the development of works on cosmologies. In stage (I), the handling of the former consists of clustering the company?s practices, beliefs and values in the form of stances through which Kraft?s constellations are identifiable. Thanks to the appraisal resources by Martin and White (2005), the inscriptions of the attitudinal subsystem and the grading resources, in particular, that identification is possible. Stage (II) discusses the constellations analysis regarding the external relations allowing for gauging the epistemological and axiological underpinnings in the investigated discourse, the means by which the type of knower is known. In this phase, the theoretical accounts of Maton?s (in press, 2013b, 2010a, 2010b, 2007, 2006, 2004) knowledge-knower structure interfaced with Bernstein?s concepts of the code theory are brought into play. The results have shown that by means of appreciation and graduation interplay within appraisal theory the majority of the stances in Kraft?scosmology are acknowledgeable within the reservoir of meanings of sustainability. By the same token, appreciation-graduation interplay has revealed that four of the stances identified in Kraft?s cosmology do not comply with the reservoir of meanings of sustainability, indicating that the ?grammar? power in Kraft?s cosmology is, in some sense, downplayed. Nevertheless, this is not to argue that the epistemic relations in Kraft?s knowledge structure become weak. In truth, they remain untouchable, since the only hierarchy individuated by Kraft?s company is the one of sustainability whereby the presence of the majority of the stances is justifiable. Therefore, the social actors in Kraft?s cosmology are the type of knowers who emphasize the specialist knowledge over the knowers? attributes and gaze from the view that in Kraft?s knowledge structure epistemic relations are strongly classified and social relations are weakly framed. Technically considered, this means that the company investigated is described under the knowledge code +ER (+C, + F); - SR (-C, -F), strong epistemic relations and weak social relations, thus indicating the company?s inclination towards the specialist knowledge.

The aim of this study is to define the eco-compatibility of biopolymers, the so called "green plastics" with a view extended to all phases of life in order to quantify the environmental impact of these materials. Nowadays, biopolymers represent the most widespread materials when it comes to replace the conventional polymers and they are considered particularly promising in terms of environmental sustainability. Indeed, the production of plastics from renewable sources in recent years has had an exponential growth (from 180 ton in 2008 to 1 million of ton in 2011). This rise is due to the market demand of products and materials with an increased environmental performance compared to “traditional plastics”, it is also due to the necessity to find alternatives to fossil fuel and to split the price of manufacturing to the fossil fuel cost. Therefore, the need to quantify the biopolymer environmental impact is becoming meaningful in order to give a concrete and objective answer to the market. However, even if there is the rapid growth on the market, the environmental data are still ambiguous and not well established. It is necessary to stress that the term “biopolymers” does not correspond to a precise and (internationally) recognized definition. In fact, This term is used both to indicate the raw material biologic origin (from biomass) and to report the information about the biodegradability in the biopolymers end of life contest. As a matter of fact, it must be specified that: - the biodegradability can be a characteristic both for a polymer coming from biomass and for one coming from fossil fuel source; - it does not exist a direct correlation between renewable source and biodegradability: a biopolymer from renewable sources is not necessarily biodegradable; - biopolymers are already implemented in the market to produces goods, for example in the packaging sector, but very often only a small percentage of their composition comes from a renewable source. In order to outline the effective sustainability when conventional polymers are replaced with biopolymers, it is necessary to consider the environmental burden related to the entire life cycle. In particular, it has to be considered: the biomass growing phase, the pellet and manufacturing production, the use phase and the end of life scenarios. Many evaluation methods are nowadays available to assess the environmental sustainability, but above all Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) remains the most reliable. LCA is in fact one of the most internationally recognized methodology for the evaluation of environmental burdens, related to a product or a service during all life cycle stages, from the extraction of raw materials to the end of life. In the specific case of biopolymers, the quantification of the environmental burdens through the application of the LCA methodology is a complex target because many are the issues to be considered for each phase and data availability is very little. In order to reach this target, a deep data collection from scientific studies and main LCA databases allowed to precisely detect specific issues concerning each of the different life cycle phases. In particular, the main issues are: the description of the parameters from the Marina Foschia Environmental Sustainability of BIOPLASTICS 3 sowing to the harvest step (raw material cultivation, carbon storage, land use change, agriculture management, transport) in biomass growing phase; the investigation of LCA data availability in the pellet production and manufacturing phase and the analysis of the existing data coming from chemical recycling plant (one of the possible end of life scenarios). It has to be mentioned that one of the most widespread biopolymer used in the market is the Polylactic acid (PLA): most of the information and data used in this study are referred to PLA life cycle.

To check rapidly deteriorating environmental conditions, many management tools are being used by different industries. In order to address environmental issues the corporate sector has seen a drastic increase in the use of environmental management systems. There is strong need to check how these environmental management systems are rendering environmental management services. Research shows that environmental management systems are mistakenly expected to prescribe technical and environmental objectives. Without describing what goals an organization must achieve, they lay out a system for management of numerous environmental obligations. Hence environmental management systems are not strategic; they tend to reactively fix issues contingent upon their occurrence and may miss opportunities to avoid problems before they occur. Further, environmental management itself is seen in isolation of a socio-ecological context, which makes environmental management lose ground and operate in a virtual vacuum. Mostly environmental management is identified as an ’agenda’ which runs counter to the overall development of an organization. Provided, environmental management systems can be integrated with basic principles of sustainable development these management systems can be utilized as a launching pad to move organizations towards sustainability. Built to render the administrative services only through a mechanism of self regulation and continuous improvement, these management systems can be used to deliver sustainable product planning. The present study illustrates the possibilities for integration of sustainability objectives into environmental management systems. In our effort to integrate sustainability in environment management systems extensive literature reviews, interviews and a case study (Hammarplast AB) have been used. For the analysis of the current reality, a framework for strategic sustainable development and methods incorporating “backcasting from principles of sustainability” – i.e. templates for sustainable product development and strategic life cycle management – has been used. The use of tools not only illustrates contemporary sustainability gaps but also gives a concrete set of guidance to integrate sustainability in environmental management systems.

This study inquires as to whether Walmart's sustainability campaign represents a sincere and holistic change throughout the company's global supply chain or if it is simply a public relations campaign which caters to the growing target market of “next-generation” consumers and justifies further expansion into “emerging markets”. A critical analysis of Walmart's sustainability discourse is presented, using transcribed texts of various corporate and publicity-geared publications. Frequently utilized terms and themes are identified throughout the big-box retailer's sustainability campaign which convey a distinctly Neoliberal ethos—a political economy which lies at the heart of current practices of institutional unsustainability—and emphasize the role of the atomized individual—who may purchase protection from environmental risks via green products. Other themes, which are commonly associated with sustainability research, are glaringly absent: subsidiarity; human rights; steady-state economics; economic inequity; the precautionary principle. This research aims to shed light on the prospects for the sustainability of green overconsumption, which Walmart is leading the way in promoting, and for the continuation of the modern economistic zeitgeist into the twenty-first century.

This study utilizes the relativity theory, from behavioral economics, to evaluate impact of a ‘decoy' product offering in a set of product choices on consumer evaluation and purchase intention of eco-friendly products. Product categories tested include multipurpose cleaners (low involvement decision), denim jeans (medium involvement), and vehicles (high involvement). 310 respondents were tested. The findings of this research indicate that the addition of a less-desirable "decoy" product offering has a positive effect on the overall evaluation and purchase intention of eco-friendly goods. Further, this research is unique in finding that the addition of a less-desirable "decoy" product offering also has a positive effect on certain evaluation components of equivalent-quality competitor products. This research provides a foundation to better market sustainably-produced goods at point-of-purchase displays (both virtual and physical), indicating that marketers can influence and increase consumer purchase of eco-friendly goods. Theoretically, this is a "triple bottom line" win: good for businesses (lower costs), consumers (safer products), and the environment (less waste and impact).

Production and consumption of products contribute to the global sustainability challenge by degrading natural and social systems. This thesis focuses on branded products, which through powerful images and meanings symbolise the core business of a company and a platform of identification for its stakeholders. This study investigates the possibility to align a brand and its company with sustainability. With the help of a small branded design company in Berlin, which served as case study, a strategic management planning process was conducted and action research was used to be able to engage the participants in creating movement towards sustainability. The research shows that there are major internal and external barriers and motivations that can either hinder or inspire. The actions and approaches that were identified for a branded design company represent possible means to transform its business towards sustainability. Natural resources are decreasing relative to the growth in human population and affluence. This fuels the need to develop more sustainable products so that human needs and natural eco-systems can thrive. A branded design company has the ability to help lead society through innovating products, services, and activities towards a sustainable future.

Small region sustainability is an extremely important part of the journey to sustainability of the global population, as the most difference can be made at this spatial level through decision making and community choice. However, small regions have not been the focus of sustainability literature. Therefore, this thesis develops theory to explain what small region sustainability involves and tested the applicability of current sustainability assessment methods to find an effective tool for the journey to sustainability that can be used for social learning, decision making, policy development, research and monitoring of sustainability in small regions. It was found through the development of a model of sustainable carrying capacity and the major pressures of human activities on the environment, that sustainability for small regions means living equitably with the impacts of human activities in the region within the limits of its ecosystems. This thesis also found that none of the current sustainability methods tested were effective or useful as a tool for small regions. Therefore, a new sustainability assessment method was developed, the Sustainable Carrying Capacity Assessment (SCCA), which assesses the equitability and size of the major pressures that the human activities are causing and determines if this pressure exceeds the sustainable carrying capacity of the region, and thus, the sustainability of the population. Thus, for small regions to become sustainable, they must live equitably within the sustainable carrying capacity of the region's ecosystems, and a tool that can help them achieve this is the SCCA. By raising social awareness, guiding policy development and decision making this method can help guide small regions, and other spatial levels on their journey to sustainability. Therefore, it is recommended that Local Government Areas, Regional Organisation of Councils, schools, local community groups and anyone who wants to learn more about sustainability use this method. This thesis, therefore, makes a significant contribution to the field of sustainability.

This qualitative study aims to contribute to the research field on corporate sustainability (CS) in small and medium-sized enterprise (SMEs), in hopes of helping policymakers better understand the circumstances for Swedish SMEs and how they work with CS. Empirical data about motivations behind working with CS, implementation of CS activities, and effects of CS work were collected through in-depth interviews with 18 company representatives. The major reason for motivation was found to be personal interest and commitment to these kind of practices, followed by strengthening the competitiveness, marketing, initiative from management and board, and profitability aspects. The implementation process is often informal in nature with concrete measures and activities rather than formal policies and strategies, although a few of the companies make use of tools such as environmental management systems. How the companies communicate their CS work differs and the response from stakeholders varies too. Lastly, profitability was found to be an important effect for some, while others more heavily emphasize the personal satisfaction from doing the right thing and being sustainable. The social effects were mostly improved working conditions and more engagement from stakeholders, while the environmental impact was understood to mostly concern a decrease in consumption of finite resources, and a more efficient use of material and energy. Suggestions for improving CS work in Swedish SMEs are increased support and encouragement from the government, and more education and information about what companies can do and how they can do it with appropriate tools. Concluding, CS in Swedish SMEs must be studied further to gain a more comprehensive picture of how to support those SMEs already working with CS and those in the path of transitioning towards a more sustainable development.

Streszczenie:
The pursuit of urban sustainability is considered central to sustainable development and is a key objective of the global Sustainable Development Goals (2015) and the New Urban Agenda (2016). This thesis aims to contribute to debates on urban sustainability by providing insights as to the role of actors participating in processes of governing for urban sustainability, with particular focus on the municipal organisation. The thesis employs an interdisciplinary approach to illustrate divergent approaches to governing for urban sustainability, with reference to empirical studies of strategic planning processes in municipalities in selected North-western European countries – Sweden, Switzerland and The Netherlands. These studies address themes including climate change, sustainable transport and multi-level governance. The thesis provides a broad overview of theoretical discussions related to governing, strategy and planning, the role of actors in governing for urban sustainability, and the particular importance of climate change as a challenge for urban sustainability. A number of research gaps are identified and addressed in two research questions, focusing on the organisation and practice of processes of governing for urban sustainability, and the factors influencing actors participating in such processes. The thesis responds to these research questions with reference to five appended papers, which illustrate different dimensions of governing for urban sustainability. The first paper concerns the organisation of processes to develop energy and climate strategies in Swedish municipalities, and the second paper highlights the experiences of actors participating in such processes. The third paper presents results from a survey illustrating the expectations of stakeholders active in governing transport in the city of Norrköping, Sweden. In the fourth paper, the development and implementation of policies aiming for sustainable transport and urban sustainability in Basel, Switzerland, are discussed. In the final paper, cooperation through transnational municipal networks is explored with reference to the World Ports Climate Declaration, an initiative of the city of Rotterdam. The thesis confirms the presence of five factors – capacity, mandate, resources, scope and will – that shape the “strategy space” of actors and play an important role in conditioning the form and content of processes of governing for urban sustainability. The thesis suggests that the ways in which a municipal organisation perceive and mobilise the five factors will strongly determine the extent of its sustainability strategy space. In sum, municipal organisations and other actors participating in processes of governing for urban sustainability need to mobilise the five factors and expand their strategy space, in order to achieve vertical and horizontal alignment of strategic objectives and facilitate implementation that delivers transformative change.

City officials are in the position to adopt and implement policies within their jurisdiction that can have lasting impacts for businesses, people, and the environment. Sustainability research has highlighted the need to protect the environment by adopting policies which support the three E's of sustainable development (environment, equity, and economy). Stepping aside from the traditional mechanisms for building a successful city focused on economy first can be challenging for policy makers. The problem city officials face is that changes towards environmental protectionism have long been considered harder on city economy than traditional development focused on economic prosperity. Additionally, sustainability planning is thought to mitigate potential negative impacts that planning for environmental protectionism and social equity may have on economic prosperity. To examine this problem faced by city officials, ordinal regression analyses was used to analyze (1) the possible effects of environmental protectionism and social equity on a city's economic prosperity, and (2) whether sustainability planning has a moderating affect between environmental protectionism, social equity, and economic prosperity. This analysis demonstrates that environmental protectionism and social equity are not associated with a decline in economic prosperity. Sustainability planning was directly associated with increased economic prosperity but did not moderate the relationship between environmental protectionism and economic prosperity.

Streszczenie:

Streszczenie:
The aim of this research is to explore the sustainability of the existing residential buildings and to analyse how sustainability can be assessed if sustainable materials and technologies would be used. The main objectives are concentrated in providing a general knowledge of sustainability and to examine how much sustainable the residential buildings are. To analyze the various technologies and materials that can be used in order to reduce the climate-altering emissions, to improve energy efficiency, to reduce costs and to improve the living conditions. Providing knowledge and tools for the sustainable re-design of existing buildings, which will be addressed to environmental, technical, economic and social feasibility of proposed measures, and to energy control. For the analysis, different case studies in different countries will be studied and then a life-cycle approach will be applied to a theoretical residential building, and all the relevant impact categories for the selected type of buildings will be taken into account. In order to analyze the sustainability of the building, a qualitative research will be done using literature sources, international database, journal articles, technical and official reports from the government or group researchers patented and SimaPro software. Materials and dimensions will be defined and will be studied the integrated energy performance, CO2 emissions, global warming, acoustic comfort, thermal comfort, indoor environmental quality for existing residential building structures. All these steps will be taken in order to allow an LCA analysis of the materials of the residential buildings and to define when can be considered that the system has actually been sustained.

Streszczenie:
Inspired by the 1999 Program of Action defined by the United Nations, which describes eight pragmatic areas for a Culture of Peace. My proposal will work on the section 'Sustainable economic and social development' evaluating microfinance and the organizations that manage them, as a tool to achieve this objective. Immersed in a global context and under the prism of sustainability, the performance analysis of the organizations activity can not be done only from its economic exercise, but it is necessary to measure its impact under a wider range of criteria (Fernández et al., 2013). The main objective of this thesis will be to contribute to the improvement of research in this sector, presenting a global vision of the behaviour of MFIs in terms of sustainable performance, based on a model that articulates the financial, environmental, social and governance dimensions of integrated form.
